Lore:
- Originating along the Great Silk Trails and horse-trading crossroads of the Kazakh steppe, this ceremonial riding crop was devised by market-shamans (Baksy of the Ledger) to harmonize the ancestral spirits of trade, livestock, and fair barter.
- In border caravanserai and nomadic bazaars, agreements sealed under the eye of the spirits carry the weight of inviolable covenants; breaking an oath witnessed by ancestral patron spirits invites curses of sudden herd blight or dry purses.
- Crafted from the seasoned heartwood of wild apricot and braided steppe horsehide, the crop serves simultaneously as a tool of equine mastery, an abacus for calculating tariffs and currency weights, and a spirit-focus for identifying forged coins and predatory merchants.
- Bound with a coin-sized Tier 1 amber crystal at its pommel, the crop channels the ancient steppe proverb that gold without a witness brings only wolves, anchoring the avatar’s business transactions in ancestral truth and divine fiscal equilibrium.
Description:
- The item is a thirty-inch riding crop and market abacus carved from dense, polished apricot wood stained a warm amber brown, tipped with a flexible, double-tongued lash of braided black horsehair and ox leather.
- Running along the upper half of the wooden shaft are three carved longitudinal grooves holding fifteen smooth, sliding counters fashioned from fossilized bone, river-polished carnelian, and pressed copper rings.
- Nestled within the circular pommel crown is a coin-sized, coin-weighted Tier 1 golden-amber crystal that glows with a faint, warm candlelight whenever honest trade or precious metal is handled.
- Wound tightly below the pommel are seven coils of raw brass wire, interspersed with tiny copper bells that ring with a dull, muffled chime only when a falsehood is spoken during a barter.
- A braided leather wrist loop allows the crop to dangle hands-free while the bearer counts coins, measures trade goods, or consults handwritten ledger scrolls.

- Suggested Market Value: 36 Silver coins or 72 Nickel pieces (standardized across livestock trading pavilions, municipal tollgates, and commercial guildhouses)
Multiple Passives Magic:
- Ledger-Spirit Divination: While holding or wearing the crop, the avatar’s Mind’s Eye passively detects the purity and authenticity of physical currencies, bullion, and trade gems within 15 feet, instantly identifying shaved coins, gilded lead counterfeits, or magically masked debasements.
- Equine Herd Mastery: Mounted beasts, pack camels, and draft animals ridden or led by the wielder gain a +10-foot bonus to travel speed over long distances and require 20% less feed, as the ancestral pasture spirits soothe the beasts’ physical fatigue.
- Fair Barter Equilibrium: When engaging in non-hostile economic negotiations, the avatar has advantage on insight checks to determine the true emotional desperation, bottom-line threshold, or commercial intent of a prospective buyer or seller.
Multiple Activable Magics:
- Abacus-Click Tariff Disruption: As an action, the avatar slides the fifteen counters along the grooves in a rapid, clattering sequence and snaps the leather lash toward a creature within 10 feet. A ringing concussive wave of spectral brass coins bursts forward. The target must make an immediate saving throw (DC 11). On a failed save, the target takes 1d6 force damage, drops one held item of the avatar’s choice from its grip, and has its movement speed halved until the start of your next turn as phantom weights anchor its limbs.
- Ancestral Covenant Seal: As an action requiring the handshake of a willing party, the avatar taps the crop’s amber pommel against the clasped hands. A golden sigil of a grazing mare burns invisibly into the palms of both traders. For 30 days, neither party can knowingly violate the explicit terms of the agreed-upon contract without suffering a stinging psychic backlash of 1d6 psychic damage and being outlined in a dim, spectral red glow for 24 hours that marks them as an oath-breaker.
- Herd-Tithe Ward: As a reaction when an enemy within 10 feet targets the avatar with a physical melee or ranged attack, the wielder snaps the lash across the dirt or floor. A barrier of spinning spectral coin-tokens and galloping spirit-steeds flashes into existence, granting a +2 bonus to Armor Check against the triggering attack. If the attack misses, the attacker’s weapon or limb is jarred, giving the attacker disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its turn.

Market Venues and Commercial Outlets for Shamanic 629 of the Equine Abacus-Whip
- Steppe Horse Marts, Livestock Corrals, and Nomad Trading Pavilions:
- Description: Sprawling open-air paddocks, woven willow pens, and broad felt yurts set along caravan intersections and grazing valleys. The air is thick with the scent of dried horse dung, crushed steppe grasses, boiling tea, and sour fermented mare’s milk. The atmosphere is loud with the neighing of bloodline horses, the clatter of wooden feed troughs, and the rapid-fire banter of herd drovers and master horse-copers.
- How it is Bought and Sold: Equine drovers and horse-shamans consider the crop an essential piece of tackle for commanding high-spirited steppe mounts, settling trade agreements on herd purchases, and protecting saddlebags from opportunistic bandits. A buyer tests the crop by flicking the double lash against a rawhide saddle pad to gauge its balance, sliding the bone and carnelian beads to test friction along the grooved apricot shaft, and observing whether the amber crystal brightens in proximity to pure silver trade bars. When an avatar sells the implement here, the horse-master verifies that the braided horsehair whip-tongues are intact and that the tiny brass warning bells have not been muffled or cracked.
- Cost:
- Purchase Price: 34 to 42 Silver coins, or 68 to 84 Nickel pieces.
- Sell Offer: 30 to 32 Silver coins, commonly transacted as partial credit toward a trained steppe warhorse, sturdy pack camels, or handcrafted silver bridle hardware.
- Municipal Tollhouses, Customs Offices, and Tax-Farming Stations:
- Description: Fortified limestone gates, riverside watch posts, and masonry customs barriers guarding bridges and highway mountain passes. These administrative chambers feature iron-barred teller wickets, ink-stained oak desks piled with duty rolls and trade manifests, balance scales with calibrated lead weights, and heavy coin chests bolted to stone flagstones. The scent of drying lampblack ink, wax seals, and damp wool cloaks pervades the drafty room.
- How it is Bought and Sold: Customs collectors and municipal tax stewards use the abacus-whip to rapidly tally cart tariffs, verify the purity of foreign coins submitted for duties, and enforce order if an unruly teamster disputes an assessment. The customs inspector inspects the crop by running shaved coins beneath the pommel to observe the color change of the amber focus and checks the sliding beads for precise numerical calibration. When an avatar sells the tool to a tollhouse supervisor, the station auditor cross-references the maker’s seal and confirms the wrist loop is intact. Transactions are officially registered in the regional tax logbook.
- Cost:
- Purchase Price: 38 to 46 Silver coins, or roughly 4 Gold pieces.
- Sell Offer: 32 to 34 Silver coins, paid in verified municipal treasury scrip or clean, freshly minted silver coin.
- Merchant Banking Houses and Precious Metal Guild Exchanges:
- Description: Prestigious multi-story establishments situated in the banking districts of major walled trade hubs, featuring marble-tiled banking floors, brass tellers’ cages, locked subterranean deposit vaults, and mahogany balance tables. Clerks in velvet-trimmed coats quietly flip through paper ledgers, while private guards in polished cuirasses stand watch. The room carries the dry scent of parchment, tallow candles, and cold, metallic coin bullion.
- How it is Bought and Sold: Moneychangers, guild factors, and World Bank assayers purchase the crop as an arcane verification tool for identifying gilded counterfeit bars, catching shaved coins, and sealing large business agreements with legally binding spirit oaths. The banker checks the copper coils and rings the brass bells with an intentionally false trade statement to ensure the ward rings true. If an avatar sells the crop here, an assayer verifies the clarity of the Tier 1 pommel crystal using a jeweler’s loupe and ensures the apricot wood has not suffered oil damage. Avatars holding recognized guild merchant credentials receive a standard 10% commercial discount on purchases.
- Cost:
- Purchase Price (Standard Adventurer): 40 to 50 Silver coins.
- Purchase Price (Registered Merchant Guild Member): 36 to 45 Silver coins.
- Sell Offer: 32 Silver coins, deposited directly into the seller’s verified World Bank credit ledger.
- Under-Bazaar Smuggler Dens and Pawn Vaults:
- Description: Operating in subterranean cellars, abandoned bathhouse conduits, or recessed alcoves beneath crowded border bazaars. Lit by smoky tallow candles and protected by heavily armed muscle, these cramped stalls feature piles of unmarked wooden trade crates, melted silver ingots, stripped merchant guild seals, and velvet-lined pouches of illicit gems. The air smells of damp cellar brick, stale tobacco smoke, and cheap liquor.
- How it is Bought and Sold: Fences, illicit loan sharks, and black-market smugglers acquire the crop for its discreet utility in detecting counterfeit payments during shady dealings and for enforcing debt agreements using the stinging, reach-capable lash. Buyers pay strictly in hard, unrecorded coin with no questions asked about provenance. When an avatar sells the crop to a black-market broker, the fence attempts to dismiss it as a standard horse crop to lower the bid, though they quickly agree to purchase if the abacus counters slide smoothly and the amber stone glows bright.
- Cost:
- Purchase Price: 48 to 60 Silver coins, or 5 to 6 Gold coins.
- Sell Offer: 26 to 30 Silver coins in unrecorded loose silver or cut gem chips.
Tactical Commerce and Environmental Roleplay of the Equine Abacus-Whip
- Crowded Bazaars, Steppe Caravanserais, and Trade Thoroughfares:
- Environmental Context: Dense open-air markets packed with canvas stalls, woven rug displays, wandering livestock, suspicious merchants, and opportunistic pickpockets slipping through the throng.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- While navigating volatile border markets, the avatar rests a thumb against the abacus counters; Ledger-Spirit Divination alerts them to bad faith, rigged scales, or counterfeit coins being offered before a deal is struck.
- When an enraged merchant or cutpurse lunges from behind a stall with a concealed blade, the avatar raises the crop to trigger the Herd-Tithe Ward, manifesting a flurry of spectral coins that deflects the dagger while throwing the attacker off-balance.
- In chaotic stampedes or street brawls, Equine Herd Mastery keeps the avatar’s pack animals calm and steady, preventing panicked camels or mounts from bolting with valuable cargo.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- When dealing with an absconding thief or aggressive debt dodger weaving through merchant stalls, the avatar flicks the braided horsehair lash to snap around the target’s ankles or wrist from ten feet away, tripping them without damaging nearby porcelain or fragile wares.
- The avatar uses Abacus-Click Tariff Disruption by clattering the beads in a sharp calculation, releasing a concussive burst of force that disarms an armed enforcer and leaves their limbs heavy with phantom debt.
- Open Steppe Plains, Salt Flats, and Livestock Grazing Corrals:
- Environmental Context: Broad grasslands, dry scrub plains, and post-road intersections where mounted raiders, wild wolf packs, and cattle rustlers take advantage of open terrain.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- While traveling long caravan hauls between trading posts, Equine Herd Mastery allows the avatar’s mount to cover great distances without collapsing from fatigue, outrunning pursuit or harsh weather while conserving food.
- When skirmishers on horseback attempt a drive-by lance pass, the avatar activates Herd-Tithe Ward, creating a shimmering perimeter of galloping spirit-steeds that startles oncoming mounts and causes charging thrusts to veer off target.
- Offensive Roleplay: It looks like the specific subject or system (“this”) was omitted from your prompt.

- The wielder experiences a faint sweetness on the back of the palate reminiscent of dried dates, wild clover honey, and the faint metallic tang of holding a clean silver coin against the lips.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Fiscal Equilibrium Awareness: The avatar’s Mind’s Eye perceives currency, bullion, and physical property within 15 feet as glowing nodes of trade value, immediately flagging shaved edges, base metal adulterations, or hidden debt curses.
- Ancestral Witness Connection: The user intuitively senses the approving gaze of ancient bazaar baksy and herd matriarchs, granting immediate psychic insight into whether an opposing bargainer is speaking in good faith or harboring intent to breach contract.
- Kinetic Tithe Resonance: The wielder perceives the target’s physical balance as an open balance sheet, intuitively calculating the precise angle needed to disarm weapons or disrupt posture with minimal physical exertion.
Observer’s Perspective
- Sight:
- Bystanders see the amber pommel blaze with a lantern-bright golden radiance that reflects sharply off the brass wire coils and abacus rings.
- As the wielder tallies the beads, flickering ethereal numbers and golden currency motes spiral outward from the shaft.
- The crack of the lash sends a visible shockwave of golden force forward, kicking up dust and scattering glittering coin-shaped sparks in a 10-foot radius.
- A protective ward manifests as a brief, translucent screen of galloping spirit-horses and rotating coin discs between the wielder and incoming strikes.
- Hearing:
- Observers hear an unnervingly clear, rapid clicking of abacus beads that cuts through the noise of crowded markets or roaring combat.
- The whip’s snap sounds like a hammer striking an anvil stacked with silver pieces, followed by a pure brass bell tone that vibrates in the chest of those nearby.
- Touch:
- Adjacent creatures feel a sudden shift in atmospheric pressure, accompanied by a brief gust of warm, dry wind that smells of sun-warmed leather and polished wood.
- Targets struck by the tariff shockwave experience an abrupt, heavy numbness in their hands and joints, as if dragging heavy bags of copper ballast.
- Smell:
- Nearby witnesses catch the faint scent of horse stables, dried fruit, and hot brass coils.
- Taste:
- Observers in close proximity detect a dry, coppery tang in the air that coats the teeth and tongue.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Mind’s Eye Reading: Observers utilizing an active Mind’s Eye perceive the item as a Tier 1 Shamanic economic focus, displaying its +1 Armor Check grounding value, anti-counterfeit attunement, and spiritual contracts anchored to regional trade spirits.
- Weight of the Covenant: Dishonest individuals or oath-breakers feel a sudden, oppressive sensation of spiritual debt and guilt pressing down on their shoulders when standing within range of the glowing amber node.
Positives
- Immediate Fiscal Security:
- Ledger-Spirit Divination completely neutralizes fraudulent coinage, forged bank scrip, gilded lead bullion, and disguised trade gems before any deal is completed.
- Non-Lethal Disarmament:
- The Abacus-Click Tariff Disruption safely removes weapons from an adversary’s hand at a 10-foot range while halving their speed, diffusing violent conflicts without spilling blood or ruining trade relationships.
- Inviolable Contract Assurance:
- Ancestral Covenant Seal creates an enforceable mystical bond on verbal agreements, preventing cross-deal betrayals, sudden price gouging, or breach of faith for a full month.
- Logistical Endurance Boost:
- Equine Herd Mastery significantly increases caravan speed while cutting livestock feed requirements by 20%, dramatically improving the profitability and safety of long-distance trading expeditions.
Negatives
- Conspicuous Commercial Display:
- The bright golden flare, distinctive clattering abacus beads, and ringing brass chimes eliminate any chance of stealth, immediately drawing the attention of guards, raiders, and rival merchants.
- Reciprocal Contract Penalties:
- The Ancestral Covenant Seal binds the user just as rigidly as their trading partner; if the avatar violates the agreed terms, they suffer the exact same psychic sting and luminous red oath-breaker mark.
- Ineffective Beyond Moderate Distance:
- The crop’s active tactical maneuvers, disarming shockwaves, and defensive wards require targets to be within a 10-foot perimeter, leaving the wielder vulnerable to dedicated long-range missile fire.
- Dependent on Living Livestock:
- The herd mastery traits require living equine, camelid, or draft beasts to function; mechanized transports, steam engines, and artificial constructs gain zero speed or efficiency benefits from the focus.
Recipe: The Steppe Merchant’s Ledger-Crop
Materials Needed
- Core Wooden Shaft:
- A straight, well-seasoned twenty-inch branch of dense wild apricot heartwood, dried slowly over two seasons to prevent checking or warping.
- Magical Catalyst:
- One intact, coin-sized and coin-weighted Tier 1 golden-amber crystal harvested from a dry alluvial riverbed, carrying a steady resonance of fair exchange and solar heat.
- Sacrificial Component:
- One antique merchant’s wooden hand abacus, a set of calibrated brass balance weights, or an assessor’s tally stick that has overseen at least one hundred completed trade agreements. This item is ritually calcined to release its fiscal spirit-ledger into the new implement.
- Abacus Counters & Metalwork:
- Five polished beads carved from dense camel bone.
- Five beads shaped and drilled from red steppe carnelian.
- Five small rings hammered from pure trade copper.
- Four feet of 18-gauge raw brass winding wire.
- Three miniature cast brass bells with silver clappers.
- Lash & Ergonomic Grip:
- Twelve strands of coarse black horsehair taken from a prime lead stallion, twenty-four inches long.
- One strip of oil-cured ox leather, sixteen inches long and one inch wide, split into a double-tongued striker.
- One braided leather thong for the wrist loop.
- Two fluid drams of amber pine resin mixed with rendered mutton tallow and a pinch of ground turmeric for finishing.
Tools Required
- Woodcarver’s fine gouges, v-parting tools, and cabinet rasps to profile the shaft and cut the slide runnels.
- Hand-cranked jewelers’ drill with fine bits for piercing the pommel seat and pinholes.
- Small ceramic annealing crucible and charcoal brazier for calcining the sacrificial tool.
- Fluid collector syringe for injecting the warm resin compound into the crystal socket.
- Leather stitching awl, burnishing bone, and wire-wrapping pliers.
Skill Requirements
- Woodworking & Joinery: Level 3 or higher. Required to cut three perfectly parallel, straight abacus grooves along the tapering apricot shaft without weakening the wood’s structural resilience.
- Leatherworking & Cordage: Level 2 or higher. Necessary to braid the horsehair core into the ox-hide split-lash securely so that repeated kinetic impacts do not unravel the lash.
- Shamanic Commerce Rites (Baksy of the Ledger): Level 1 or higher. Essential to conduct the ancestral market vigil, bind the calcined tally-stick ash into the amber matrix, and attune the bells to the vibration of truthful trade.
Crafting Steps
- Step 1: Shaping and Grooving the Apricot Stave:
- Strip and rough-profile the wild apricot limb to a finished length of twenty inches, tapering gently from an inch-thick pommel crown down to a half-inch terminal neck.
- Using the v-gouge and parting tools, carve three longitudinal channels along the upper ten inches of the shaft, sizing each to seat the sliding counters with zero lateral play.
- Sand the wood using fine horse-tail reeds until the surface is satin-smooth, then soak the runnels in light mutton oil to ensure frictionless movement.
- Step 2: Preparing and Mounting the Counters:
- Bore uniform center holes through the five camel bone beads, five carnelian beads, and five hammered copper rings.
- Slot the fifteen counters into their respective channels (five counters per groove) and secure the ends with cross-driven copper stop-pins embedded flush into the apricot timber.
- Slide the beads back and forth repeatedly to verify that each counter produces a distinct, crisp click without binding against the wood.
- Step 3: Calcining the Sacrificial Tally and Preparing the Resin:
- Place the sacrificial merchant abacus or tally stick into the charcoal brazier. Maintain a low-burning heat while chanting the baksy invocation of the Honest Scale until the wood reduces to powdery white ash.
- In the ceramic crucible, melt the amber pine resin, blending it with mutton tallow, the pinch of turmeric, and the hot sacrificial ash.
- Draw the hot mixture into the fluid collector syringe for immediate application.
- Step 4: Seating the Amber Focus and Brass Wiring:
- Ream a circular socket into the flat pommel crown of the apricot shaft to precisely fit the coin-sized Tier 1 amber crystal.
- Inject the warm ash-resin matrix into the socket cavity using the fluid collector, then firmly press the amber crystal into place until it sits flush with the wooden rim.
- Below the pommel, tightly wind the raw brass wire in seven continuous coils. Suspend the three miniature brass bells from the coil loops, soldering the wire tips into small pre-drilled pinholes.
- Leave the assembly standing upright in a bowl of dry grain or silver coins overnight while performing the trade attunement chant. The amber stone should flare with a steady golden candlelight when the resin sets.
- Step 5: Braiding the Lash and Final Assembly:
- Anchor the black stallion hair around the neck of the wooden shaft, braiding it tightly into a dense core.
- Wrap the split ox-hide cover over the hair core, securing the base with waxed thread and horsehair bindings to form a durable, double-tongued striker.
- Attach the braided leather wrist strap through a cross-drilled hole just forward of the brass coils.
- Rub the finished apricot wood with the warm resin-tallow polish, then flick the whip twice against a hard saddle pad to verify that the lash snaps cleanly and the bells emit their clear harmonic chime.
Crooked Stick of Counting, Seven Hollow Silver-Cakes, and Great Horse-Bargain of Dry Salt-Well
In the first age when the sky-ox had not yet shed his horns and the mountains of the south were only small hills of dried camel-mud, there lived in the dust-skirt of the city of Ur-Khorasan an old driver of sheep whose name upon the broken tiles was written as Bolat-the-Lame, but whom the deaf stone-scratchers of the sea-tent set down as He-Who-Counteth-the-Teeth-of-the-Wind. He possessed neither forty silver shields nor a high stone wall to keep out the night-leopards, but only a wooden riding-rod of apricot tree, four mangy ewes, and a blind mare whose skin was like an old leather milk-sack thrown into the thorn-bush.
Now in those moons, the great market of the White Wells was a place of sorrow and crooked weights. There sat the fat traders of the southern mud-ports, whose robes were made of sea-snail silk and whose beards were perfumed with the lard of mountain cats. They carried great sacks of silver pieces that had lead in their bellies, and when a poor shepherd of the steppe brought down his six yearling colts to buy winter barley, the silk-men would set their crooked brass bowls upon the stones. The bowls had hollow legs stuffed with wax, so that two pecks of red wheat seemed like ten, and when the shepherd gave up his horses, the silk-men would laugh into their greasy collars: “Behold, the fool from the salt-reeds hath sold six horses for two handfuls of husks! Let him eat horse-hair when the snow falleth upon his knees!”
The people of the felt tents suffered greatly. Their bellies growled like trapped marmots, and the young men took up iron hoes to break the heads of the market-guards, but the market-guards had helmets of poured bronze and beat the shepherds into the dung-gutters until the stones were red like sheep-livers.
Then Bolat-the-Lame walked into the communal gathering of the twelve tents, leaning upon his old apricot riding-whip. The stick was thirty inches of heavy wood, stained like old river-amber, upon whose belly he had carved three long grooves with his grandfather’s bone chisel. Inside the grooves ran fifteen little round stones—five of sheep-shin, five of red gravel, and five of hammered copper wire. Upon its head sat a round yellow glass that had been found inside the belly of a dead lightning-bolt, and around its neck were seven coils of red brass with three little bells that had no tongues to speak except when a rogue opened his mouth.
“Why sit ye weeping into your empty cheese-sacks?” said Bolat-the-Lame. “A spear cannot pierce a crooked scale, and an iron axe cannot weigh the purity of a coin. Give unto me the bridle of the blind mare, and I shall ride down to the White Wells to buy the barley of the twelve clans.”
The elders of the tents laughed with dry throats: “Thou old water-head! The silk-men will strip the skin from thy back and give thee two handfuls of sheep-dung for thy grandmother’s mare! Stay thou in the tent and scrape the grease from the pot!”
Bolat heard them not. He climbed upon the backbone of the blind mare. He did not beat her with an iron rod, but held the apricot crop against her neck, flicking the black horsehair lash three times against the dry sand. Behold, the ancestral pasture-spirits of the great steppe entered the nostrils of the blind mare! Her blind eyes cleared like running brook-water; her dry ribs swelled with the breath of wild stallions; she took forty paces in the time a young man draweth his breath, and the red dust flew behind her hooves like the smoke of thirty brush-fires!
Before the midday sun had reached the top of the tent-pole, Bolat sat upon his mare in the midst of the Great Mart of the White Wells, right before the pavilion of Karkas-the-Heavy, who was the master of seventy grain-wagons and the chief falsifier of coins in all the southern provinces.
Karkas looked upon the lean shepherd and spat upon his own red velvet slippers: “What beggar cometh to my carpet? If thou hast no gold, begone, or my guards shall feed thy ears to the market dogs!”
“I have no gold,” said Bolat from the saddle, “but I have this mare whose mother was the north-wind, and I seek seventy sacks of dry barley for the bread-pots of the high clans. Bring forth thy silver-cakes, and let us make the count upon the carpet.”
Karkas smiled with his yellow dog-teeth, for he thought the old man was simple in the brain. He called unto his four slaves: “Bring forth the great chest of seven silver-cakes! Let the old sheep-man take his silver and leave the mare with the white nose in my stables!”
The slaves laid seven great cakes of shining white metal upon the woven wool rug. They shone like the full moon upon a salt-marsh, and their weight was that of seven fat lambs.
Karkas said: “Behold! Seven cakes of pure mountain silver from the deep mines of the king! Give down the reins of the mare and depart in peace!”
Then Bolat-the-Lame did not take the silver into his lap. He slid the fifteen counters of his apricot crop—clack, clack, clack! Five bone beads for the seed, five red stones for the blood of the earth, and five copper rings for the price of bread. He brought the double lash of horsehair down upon the first silver-cake with a snap like a split branch!
A great ringing went forth from the brass bells at the pommel! It was not the sweet ringing of a feast-bell, but a sharp, iron-splitting scream like a thief caught under an iron wheel!
The yellow amber glass in the crop’s head flared like a burning hay-stack! A terrible golden light fell upon the seven cakes of shining silver. Behold! The white silver skin upon the cakes melted away like morning frost before the sun, revealing seven lumpish bricks of blackened, stinking lead and pig-iron!
The merchants of the mart cried out in terror, and Karkas-the-Heavy turned as yellow as an old curd-cake: “Witchcraft! The old nomad hath thrown an evil eye upon my royal treasury! Seize his crop and slit his windpipe!”
Four bronze-coated guards sprang forward with curved iron cleavers. Bolat did not run, nor did he pull the reins of his mare. He slid the beads backward—clack, clack!—and cracked the horsehair lash in a wide circle across the dirt.
A great wave of phantom brass currency and spinning golden coins burst from the tip of the whip! It was not soft metal, but a concussive tariff of the ancestors that struck the four guards upon their iron collars. Their cleavers flew from their hands as if wrenched by thirty invisible teamsters; their legs grew heavy like stone pillars under a drowned bridge, and they fell upon their knees in the horse-dung, weeping and unable to lift their elbows!
Bolat pointed the glowing amber stone at the chest of Karkas-the-Heavy: “Thou hast weighed the hunger of the clans with false lead. Now thy debt shall be written upon thy skin!”
He touched the amber crown to the merchant’s clasped hands. A red brand in the shape of a crooked, starving horse burned into the merchant’s fat palms, smoking with the smell of scorched hair.
“Until seventy wagon-loads of clean, unmixed barley are brought unto the camp of the twelve clans,” spoke Bolat, “the lead in thy belly shall turn all wine to vinegar, all bread in thy mouth shall taste of horse-sweat, and this mark shall scream with fire whenever thou touchest a piece of gold!”
Karkas howled like a dog beaten with a fence-rail: “Take the grain! Take the wagons! Take the two hundred red oxen! Only lift the fire from my marrow, for the ledger-spirits are tearing my intestines like wild wolves!”
And so it was done: seventy wagons of sweet barley and sixty white ewes were driven up into the high terraces of the nomads before the night-star had risen. The clans ate their bread in joy; the children grew fat upon porridge, and the great felt wagons had grain to sow the river-terraces for three seasons.
Bolat-the-Lame laid his apricot stick beside the saddle-tree of the communal horse-post. He took neither the silk coat nor the sixty white sheep for his own pasture, but sat upon his sheepskin mat, counting the beads of bone and stone as the sun went down behind the salt-hills.
“Keep the crop beside the scale,” said the old driver, “when the men of the cities bring down their weights. For when the iron of the warrior is broken and the prayer of the priest is drowned in shouting, the truthful count of the abacus and the sting of the horse-hair lash shall preserve the bread of the weak from the claws of the fat-bellied.”
Moral: He who cheateth the hungry with false silver may buy the laughter of fools for an hour, but the ancestral ledger closeth not its runnels; for every shaved coin taken from the poor, a hundredfold of lead shall be laid upon the heart when the whip of the spirits striketh the scale.
