Lore
- In the ancient, petrified heartwood groves of the Whispering Skerries, forestry wardens and shipwright botanists faced difficulties dating reclaimed prehistoric timbers and identifying dormant fungal blights hidden deep within ancient living canopies.
- An archivist of the Erlitou Guild of Shipwrights, inspired by early Reiki diagnostic touch, developed a non-invasive, bio-resonant method to read the seasonal memories held within plant tissue and dead timber.
- By drying strips of fibrous ironwood bark and reinforcing them with flexible bronze filigree, the artisan created arm-bindings that synchronize with the internal circulatory vascular cambium of trees, root structures, and wooden architecture.
- Rather than using kinetic force or metal boring augers to cut destructive core samples, the wearer projects gentle restorative frequencies into the wood grain, soothing ancient cellular stress and causing the growth rings to communicate their history directly through the wood’s xylem and phloem.
- Avatars dedicated to forestry, wilderness survival, historical reconstruction, and timber-craft quickly adopted the bindings to track seasonal anomalies, unmask counterfeit relics made of aged wood, and discern environmental disasters recorded across centuries of tree rings.
- Frontier pathfinders and herbalist medics also use the wraps to purge rot from living tree stocks, ensuring that wild orchards and sacred groves remain vital and untainted by ancient subterranean blights.
Description
- The wraps consist of flexible, cross-woven strips of treated silver-birch bark backed by durable, moss-green dyed goat leather, covering the palms and forearms with an open, fingerless profile.
- Interwoven along the exterior are fine strands of pale copper-bronze wire shaped into stylized, spiraling growth ring motifs that converge at the center of each palm.
- At the center of each palm sits a smooth, coin-sized disc of fossilized amber containing an ancient, perfectly preserved pine needle; when dormant, the amber is honey-gold and warm to the touch.
- Three small cabochons of polished green jasper are set along the outer wrist line, acting as resonant grounding nodes for biological ki transfer.
- When activated, the bronze spirals and amber discs flare with a soft, forest-green and pale-amber glow, filling the immediate area with the crisp scent of pine resin, crushed leaves, and damp cedar needles.

Passive Magic
- Dendrochronological Sight: When the avatar places a palm upon any living tree, wooden tool, timber structure, paper manuscript, or petrified wood, the Mind’s Eye perceives a concentric holographic projection of the wood’s growth rings, revealing the exact age of the wood, the climate conditions of every season it lived through, and the presence of any interior hollows, rot, or parasite tunnels.
- Lignin Kinship: The avatar’s unarmed touch and woodcarving tools treat solid timber, roots, and dense vines as yielding surfaces, granting advantage on all checks made to shape, climb, harvest, or stabilize living plants and wooden structures.
- Arboreal Resilience: The avatar gains advantage on saving throws against plant-based toxins, spore clouds, fungal infections, and environmental rot while wearing the bindings.
Activable Magic
- Cambium Chrono-Reading: As an action, the avatar presses both glowing palms against a wooden surface, tree trunk, or petrified branch and expends a charge to read up to 100 years of environmental history recorded in the growth rings. The avatar learns significant regional weather anomalies, droughts, fires, floodings, or traumatic blights that occurred within the tree’s lifespan during a chosen era. This ability can be used three times per day, resetting all expended uses daily at Helios sunrise (06:00).
- Arbor Restoration: As an action, the avatar places a glowing amber palm on a living plant, damaged wooden object, or injured living ally. Channelling soothing restorative ki, the avatar repairs split fibers or flesh, restoring 1d4 health points plus the avatar’s Tier 1 die (1d4). When used on plants or wooden items, it completely purges all parasites, fungal mold, and wood-rot within a 5-foot radius. This ability can be used three times per day, sharing its charge pool with the Cambium Chrono-Reading and resetting at sunrise.
- Sap-Lock Reaction: As a reaction triggered when struck by an incoming melee attack from a wooden weapon, natural branch, or vine, the avatar slaps the weapon with an open palm. The target must make a DC 12 Strength save; on a failure, sticky, hyper-densified resin surges instantly from the wood at the impact point, adhering the weapon to the spot or causing wooden shafts to seize and twist, forcing the attacker to drop the weapon immediately. This ability has 2 charges and recovers 1 charge after a full twenty-two-hour day has passed.

Acquisition, Valuation, and Commerce of Reiki 619 of the Timber Ring Palm
- Shipwright Guildyards and Drydock Timber Depots Situated along the deep salt harbors and tidal inlets of Erlitou, these bustling shipyards process ancient cedar, black ironwood, and water-cured oak for ocean-going hulls. The wraps are kept inside velvet-lined cedar toolboxes in the Master Shipwright’s draughting office, arranged alongside brass calipers, steam-bending gauges, and core borers. Navigators, naval carpenters, or avatars bearing an Erlitou timber inspector’s warrant can purchase the wraps directly from the guildmaster for 80 to 105 silver pieces, with options to trade in aged heartwood baulks or petrified driftwood logs. When selling a set to a drydock depot, the quartermaster will press a finger to the amber discs to check for crystal clarity and inspect the birch-bark weaving for salt fraying, offering a clean ledger credit of 65 to 75 silver coins.
- Botanical Conservatories and Herbalist Herbariums Located within terraced mountain greenhouses, civic arboretums, and sacred temple groves, these serene sanctuaries specialize in cultivating rare medicinal flora and ancient fruiting stocks. The item is displayed upon polished moss-stone pedestals beneath glass skylights, stored alongside silver pruning shears, horn fertilizer flasks, and root-grafting knives. Avatars presenting naturalist credentials or apothecary guild marks can acquire the wraps for 90 to 120 silver coins (or 9 to 12 gold coins). If an avatar brings a recovered pair to a grove conservatory, the master herbalist will pass a cut willow branch over the palm coils to confirm the sap resonance, paying out 70 to 85 silver pieces in dried rare seeds, distilled tinctures, or minted temple scrip.
- Antiquarian Scriptoria and Archival Antiquities Stalls Tucked into narrow university wynds, parchment-drying courtyards, and forgotten municipal archives where ancient deed-scrolls and wooden codices are authenticated, these quiet shops trade in documentary history. The wraps rest inside glass-topped display vitrines beside magnifying lenses, bone folders, and ancient wooden cylinder seals. The archivist sells them as precision dating instruments capable of unmasking counterfeit antique furniture and forged paper scrolls, pricing them firmly between 115 and 150 silver coins. When liquidating a set here, the scholar will examine the fossilized pine needles suspended within the palm amber under bright sunlight, offering a buyout of 75 to 90 silver coins or equivalent value in historical island maps and untranslated vellum fragments.
- Wilderness Outposts and Frontier Trapper Exchanges Found at the edge of primeval taiga forests, river-run trading forts, and logging camps where frontiersmen confront aggressive, blight-twisted growth, these rugged log-cabin stores cater to woodsmen, scouts, and trappers. The wraps hang from rough iron wall hooks among crosscut saws, iron axes, and bundles of cured peltry. The outfitter often treats them as practical woodcraft tools for identifying rot-free firewood and purging blight from boundary fences, offering them for 60 to 85 silver pieces in coin, pelts, or mountain rations. When selling a worn pair to a frontier trading post, the factor will test the spring of the goat-leather backing and pay an immediate cash sum of 40 to 55 silver pieces.
Environmental Roleplay: Arboreal Synchronization in Defense and Offense
- Primeval Old-Growth Forests, Canopy Groves, and Tangled Taiga Deep beneath towering primeval canopies where the forest floor is choked with ancient roots, thorny understory, and predatory flora, plant life defines the battlefield. Defensively, when ambushed by hostile woodland predators or cornered by an unyielding wall of razor-briars, the avatar does not waste stamina chopping clear with steel blades. Placing both palms against the tangled thicket, the avatar activates Lignin Kinship; the dense briars and interlocking roots soften to yielding, flexible cords under the soothing touch, parting smoothly to form a shielded archway that conceals the party while closing tightly behind them to block pursuers. Offensively, when engaging forest bandits or hostile skirmishers hiding among the branches, the avatar presses glowing amber palms to a massive sentinel tree and triggers Cambium Chrono-Reading. Synchronizing with the vascular cambium, the avatar reads the immediate physical tension running through the root network, discerning the exact tree trunks supporting enemy weight. Rushing forward, the avatar channels an open palm into a low-hanging bough, triggering an inverted pulse through Lignin Kinship that suddenly twists and snaps the branch, dropping snipers from the canopy while pinning ground troops beneath heavy, whipping limbs.
- Naval Drydocks, Wooden Galleons, and High-Seas Boarding Actions Aboard wooden warships, salt-battered caravels, and harbor drydocks where sea-rot and hull integrity determine life or death, wood is both the vessel and the shield. Defensively, when a rival vessel’s ram or an artillery bolt tears through the ship’s lower hull beneath the waterline, the avatar rushes into the flooded hold. Activating Arbor Restoration, the avatar presses both glowing palms directly against the fractured oak strakes; the splintered fibers surge toward one another, rapidly knitting and purging saltwater rot to form a watertight seal that arrests catastrophic flooding before the pumps are overwhelmed. Offensively, during a chaotic boarding engagement across salt-slick gunwales, an enemy marine lunges forward with a heavy wooden boarding pike. As the thrust comes in, the avatar uses their reaction to trigger Sap-Lock Reaction, slapping the side of the weapon’s ash-wood shaft. Thick, pressurized resin erupts instantly from the grain, gluing the weapon firmly against the ship’s railing and violently ripping it from the attacker’s hands, leaving them exposed to an immediate counter-strike.
- Ancient Wooden Ruin Halls, Forgotten Crypts, and Rotten Vaults Inside millennia-old subterranean temples constructed from petrified timbers, subterranean root-crypts, or sunken timber vaults, the environment holds forgotten histories and fungal hazards. Defensively, when a party member inadvertently steps on a pressure plate that releases a deadly cloud of parasitic tomb-moss or choking fungal spores, the avatar’s passive Arboreal Resilience neutralizes the airborne toxins. Stepping forward into the center of the contaminated chamber, the avatar discharges Arbor Restoration against the surrounding wooden lintels, instantly radiating a 5-foot cleansing pulse of restorative energy that purges all creeping rot, dormant blights, and toxic mold spores from the room’s timber framework. Offensively, when navigating corridors protected by ancient root-puppets or petrified wood sentinels, the avatar taps Dendrochronological Sight to scan the guardian’s structural core. Spotting the century-old frost crack or fungal cavity preserved within the concentric growth rings, the avatar strikes directly at that historical failure point, crumbling the animated wooden frame with a single precise strike that exploits decades-old rot.
- Fortified Timber Palisades, Logging Camps, and Frontier Outposts Along frontier logging fortifications, boundary stockades, and wooden garrison gates facing siege, worked lumber serves as the first line of defense. Defensively, when marauders lob firebombs or pitch torches against the dry timber palisade, the avatar places bare palms to the scorching wood. Channelling soothing ki through the birch-bark wraps, the avatar draws moisture from the deep subterranean root systems upward through the posts, forcing the wood to exude natural sap that smothers the flames and prevents structural collapse. Offensively, during an assault against a hostile frontier fortress, the avatar uses Dendrochronological Sight to inspect the enemy’s log gate from afar, tracing the growth rings back to identify logs harvested during a catastrophic drought season. Moving swiftly under cover of darkness, the avatar reaches the brittle section of the gate and uses Cambium Chrono-Reading to focus ki into the dry ring-lines, loosening the cambium bonds and causing the load-bearing gate logs to splinter and buckle under a single coordinated ramming assault.

Perception of Activation:
- Visual Perception (The Sense of Sight) Under the user’s perspective, the spiraling copper-bronze filigree ignites with a warm, golden-amber illumination that pulses like a slow, rhythmic botanical heartbeat. The central amber disc shines with an emerald-tinted core light, projecting faint, luminous concentric tree-ring outlines across whatever wooden grain or bark surface the hands contact. Through the Mind’s Eye, structural xylem pathways appear as glowing green capillary channels running through the timber. Under the observer’s perspective, onlookers see the birch-bark handwraps flare with soft, forest-green and pale-amber bioluminescence, casting a leafy, dappled light across the floor. As the palms touch a tree or wooden structure, faint ethereal rings of jade light ripple outward along the wood’s exterior, outlining hidden knots, hollow chambers, and internal fissures in vibrant green. The positive aspect is instant non-destructive structural clarity; hidden fungal decay, termite tunnels, hollow voids, and seasonal ring divisions glow vividly to the naked eye. The negative aspect is low-light concealment loss; the luminous jade and amber glow easily pierces shadows and foliage, alerting hostile forest beasts or enemy scouts to the user’s position during night operations.
- Auditory Perception (The Sense of Hearing) Under the user’s perspective, channeling through the wraps triggers a soothing, low-frequency whisper reminiscent of a summer breeze passing through an ancient birch grove, accompanied by the faint, rhythmic ticking of expanding wood fibers. When listening deeply, the user perceives the rushing of sap as a soft, rhythmic arterial hum. Under the observer’s perspective, bystanders hear a dry, delicate rustling sound, like autumn leaves turning in a sudden gust of wind, followed by a crisp, localized sound of snapping pine needles. When wood mends, there is no explosive report, but rather a quiet, stretching sound similar to fresh green branches uncoiling under morning sunlight. The positive aspect is subtle acoustic operation; activating the wraps creates virtually no jarring noise, allowing the user to examine ancient architectural woodwork or living groves without shattering natural forest quiet. The negative aspect is ambient sound interference; the soft, persistent whispering of wind and rustling leaves inside the user’s ears masks faint external audio cues, such as the quiet approach of stalkers or light footsteps across grass.
- Tactile Perception (The Sense of Touch) Under the user’s perspective, the goat-leather interior warms gently against the skin, delivering a pleasant, mild pins-and-needles sensation along the forearms like morning dew evaporating in sunlight. When contacting solid timber or bark, the wood no longer feels rigid and splintered; it yields with the supple, spongy texture of fresh spring moss, allowing the user’s hands to sink comfortably against the surface without slipping or catching splinters. Under the observer’s perspective, anyone standing on the same wooden floor, ship deck, or rooted soil feels a mild, soothing tremor pass beneath their feet, accompanied by a subtle reduction in ambient air chill as a pocket of pleasant, sun-warmed humidity settles around the user’s station. The positive aspect is perfect botanical grip and splinter immunity; the wraps allow the user to scale rough bark, thorny brambles, and splintered timbers without suffering punctures, friction burns, or loss of traction. The negative aspect is temporary digital stiffness; drawing upon deep arboreal resonance causes the user’s fingers to feel momentarily dense, sluggish, and slightly wooden immediately after a prolonged reading, briefly reducing fine manual agility with lockpicks or needlework.
- Olfactory Perception (The Sense of Smell) Under the user’s perspective, the heating amber discs release an intoxicating, sharp bouquet of fresh cedar shavings, crushed green pine needles, rich wet peat moss, and sweet wild clover. Inhaling deeply clears the sinuses with the crisp purity of an alpine forest canopy after a heavy spring rain. Under the observer’s perspective, companions within several paces are greeted by a sudden, intense burst of natural woodland fragrance, completely overpowering stale air, musty tomb mildew, or cellar dampness with the clean scent of sun-warmed amber resin and peeled birch bark. The positive aspect is immediate air purification and blight detection; the clean evergreen fragrance cuts through stale odors and immediately alerts the user to sour, rotting undertones of hidden fungal mold or necrotic biological poisons. The negative aspect is scent tracking; the potent, resinous aroma of fresh cedar and warm pine lingers in the air for dozens of paces, providing sharp-nosed hounds, wolves, or predatory tracking beasts an unmistakable chemical trail to follow.
- Gustatory Perception (The Sense of Taste) Under the user’s perspective, a sharp, clean flavor coats the tongue, reminiscent of raw birch water, sweet maple sap, and the tart bitterness of steeped spruce needles. Under the observer’s perspective, if an ally is close enough to inhale the warm botanical steam exuded during a mending pulse, they note a faint, clean aftertaste of wild mint and sweet root bark lingering in their mouths. The positive aspect is vitality refreshment; the crisp, resinous taste stimulates salivation, soothing dry throats and alleviating the thirst often brought on by dry mountain or tunnel air. The negative aspect is lingering astringency; the heavy resin and tannin taste can dry the palate over time, dulling the subtle flavors of food or making emergency rations taste excessively bitter and woody.
- Extra-Sensory Perception: Cambium Temporal Memory Under the user’s perspective, when Cambium Chrono-Reading is engaged, the user’s consciousness temporarily blends with the tree’s centuries-long awareness. Time expands into broad, sweeping seasonal sweeps: the user experiences the slow creeping chill of prolonged ancient winters as dense, pinched ring-lines, the blistering heat of ancient wildfire droughts as charred scorch marks across the cellular lattice, and the rich saturation of flood years as wide, porous bands of growth. Under the observer’s perspective, creatures sensitive to aura and spirit signatures see the sapper enveloped in a spectral, rotating crown of jade growth rings that expand outwards from the palms like ripples in a pond, flickering with shadowy vignettes of past storms and vanished forest fires. The positive aspect is infallible environmental chronology; the avatar can pinpoint the precise year of a regional disaster, verify the true age of historic structures, and detect forged antiquities without cutting open a single timber. The negative aspect is chronological disorientation; briefly experiencing century-long tree lifespans leaves the user feeling momentarily alienated from biological time, creating a brief sense of cognitive lethargy when snapping back to fast-paced physical combat.
- Extra-Sensory Perception: Vegetative Empathy and Rot Purging Under the user’s perspective, when Arbor Restoration is channeled into a blighted tree or rotted hull, the user perceives the invading fungal mycelium and parasitic beetles as discordant, thorny static disrupting a harmonious botanical song. Directing ki into the infected fibers feels like smoothing down tangled silk; the static dissolves, and the user senses the living wood relax as the vascular channels open up to flow freely once more. Under the observer’s perspective, witnesses watch blackened, rotting timbers and parasitic moss turn grey, wither into dry ash, and flake away under a wave of soothing emerald light, leaving smooth, honey-toned healthy grain in their wake. The positive aspect is systemic ecological restoration; the user can instantly cleanse blighted crops, restore rotting fortifications, and cure allies of virulent fungal toxins without standard medicines. The negative aspect is shared somatic charge drain; channeling restorative ki to cleanse wood-rot consumes the same limited charge pool needed for environmental reading, forcing the user to prioritize structural repair over historical reconnaissance.
- Extra-Sensory Perception: Hyper-Resin Seizure (Sap-Lock) Under the user’s perspective, when Sap-Lock Reaction is triggered against an incoming strike from a wooden weapon or natural branch, the user senses the sleeping resin ducts inside the wood as pressurized vessels. Striking the shaft feels like opening an energetic valve, causing the wood’s natural defensive sap to flash-crystallize and surge through the bark at the impact zone. Under the observer’s perspective, onlookers watch the attacker’s wooden polearm, cudgel, or spear shaft violently erupt with thick, boiling amber sap the split second it strikes the user’s palm, instantly fusing the weapon to the striking hand or gluing it solidly to the nearest floor or wall while wrenching it cleanly from the assailant’s grasp. The positive aspect is non-lethal disarming mastery; incoming wooden melee strikes are completely stopped and stripped from opponents without destroying the weapon, allowing it to be recovered intact. The negative aspect is material selectivity; the resin-surging reaction depends entirely upon natural plant fibers and sap channels, rendering the ability completely useless against all-metal blades, stone clubs, or biological beast claws.
Crafting Recipe: Weaving of the Arboreal Cambium Wraps
Materials Needed
- 4 wide strips of mature silver-birch bark, harvested during the spring sap-rise, boiled in cedar water, and flattened to prevent curling.
- 1 Coin-sized Tier 1 Magic Crystal, serving as the biological storage matrix for cellular resonance and botanical memories.
- 16 feet of fine copper-bronze wire, drawn into supple, thread-weight strands to form the spiraling ring conduits.
- 2 coin-sized discs of raw fossilized amber, clear honey-gold and each encasing an ancient pine needle, to serve as palm conductors.
- 6 small cabochons of polished green jasper, free of hairline fissures, to act as wrist-line grounding nodes.
- 1 square foot of soft, vegetable-tanned goat leather, dyed moss-green with crushed fern broth, for the inner liner.
- 3 fluid ounces of distilled cedar-oil varnish, blended with pine rosin to seal, waterproof, and preserve the woven bark.
Tools Required
- 1 Bone Creaser and Splitting Knife, for paring the inner layers of the birch bark to uniform thickness.
- 1 Fine Lapidary Dop and Diamond Polishing Wheel, required to shape and polish the amber discs and jasper cabochons.
- 1 Copper-Tipped Soldering Wand and Spirit Burner, for joining the bronze wire junctions and terminal rings.
- 1 Fine Awl and Silver Embroidery Needles, for scoring pass-through holes and stitching the leather backing.
- 1 Agate Mortar and Pestle, used to pulverize the magic crystal into fine conductive powder.
Skill Requirements
- Woodworking and Barkcraft: Level 5 or higher, essential for peeling, treating, and interweaving the birch bark without splitting the lenticels.
- Lapidary and Gem Setting: Level 5 or higher, necessary to shape fragile fossil amber without heat-cracking the resin or damaging the encased needles.
- Arcane Crafting: Level 6 or higher (a baseline of level 5 plus 1 for the Tier 1 item), required to harmonize the magic crystal with the vegetative biofield.
- Dendrology or Botany: Level 5 or higher, needed to accurately map the sixty-four concentric growth-ring spiral conduits to the somatic palm meridians.
Crafting Steps
- Prepare the Bark Shell and Leather Lining
- Shave the outer white papery skin and dark inner rind of the silver-birch bark strips with the splitting knife, leaving only the flexible, amber-colored middle bark layer.
- Weave the strips in an interlocking cross-diagonal pattern over an arm-mandrel, trimming the edges to form two symmetrical, fingerless forearm sleeves.
- Cut two matching patterns from the moss-green goat leather, beveling the borders to create a smooth, comfortable lining.
- Use the fine awl to pierce perimeter stitching holes spaced exactly four millimeters apart along the edges of both the bark and leather layers.
- Shape and Seat the Conductive Stones
- Mount the raw amber nodules to lapidary dops, shaping them on the diamond wheel into two flat, round discs one inch in diameter, keeping the encased pine needles centered.
- Grind the six pieces of green jasper into smooth, oval cabochons measuring eight millimeters in length.
- Cut bezel seats into the center of each woven bark palm for the amber discs, and arrange three small bezel openings along the outer radial edge of each wrist for the jasper nodes.
- Apply a thin ring of melted pine rosin around each opening and press the stones firmly into place, securing them with flush-folded bark tabs.
- Lay the Bronze Growth-Ring Filigree
- Use the bone creaser to press concentric, expanding tree-ring spiral channels directly into the outer face of the woven birch bark.
- Trace the copper-bronze wire into the grooves, forming six expanding concentric spirals that radiate outward from the central palm amber discs.
- Route the terminal ends of the wire lattice across the carpal joints, connecting two strands to each of the three jasper grounding nodes on the wrist.
- Solder the inner loop of each spiral directly to a thin bronze retainer ring encircling the amber palm cabochon using the soldering wand.
- Catalyst Integration and Harmonic Awakening
- Pulverize the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into ultra-fine crystalline dust using the agate mortar and pestle.
- Mix the ground crystal powder with warm cedar-oil varnish to form a translucent, conductive resin paste.
- Coat the entire bronze wire lattice and the undersides of the amber discs with the resin paste, ensuring complete saturation into the conduit grooves.
- Lay both hands into the curing sleeves, resting the palms against the exposed heartwood of a living oak or cedar trunk.
- Enter a meditative trance, channeling somatic healing ki through the hands to synchronize the pulse of the crystal paste with the vascular cambium of the tree.
- Roll a d20 to verify the stability of the botanical attunement: a roll of 2 through 20 permanently fixes the vegetative resonance, whereas a roll of 1 triggers an energetic sap-burst that shatters the amber discs and ruins the woven bark assembly.
- Final Stitching and Sealing
- Align the moss-green goat leather backing against the inside of the wired birch bark wraps, ensuring complete coverage over all wire paths.
- Double-stitch the perimeter holes using waxed linen thread, locking the leather and bark into a single durable composite band.
- Paint two generous coats of pure cedar-oil varnish over the exterior bark surface, allowing it to cure for twenty-four hours in a dry, shady room.
- Lace soft leather cords through the inner forearm eyelets, fitting the wraps snugly to ensure the amber discs maintain unhindered contact with the palm heels while leaving the fingers free for delicate forestry work.
Crooked Rib, Clear Gum-Pebble, and Scribe Who Counted Cold Years
Look upon the peeled willow-tablet where the sheep-tallow was rubbed by an uncle before the sea rose up and drowned the salt-ovens. In that counting of moons, the land of Erlitou was very wet, and the high men had many big canoes made of red pine so their daughters could carry dried smelts to the market without wetting their skirts.
In the house where they carve the water-logs lived Master Broad-Axe, whose ears were always full of white sawdust. He was a very proud carver who had eleven copper adzes and four brass wedges. Whenever a cedar log was pulled from the marsh by three bullocks, Master Broad-Axe would spit upon the bark and say: “This trunk is as sound as my own thigh-bone! We shall hollow its belly and put forty oars into its ribs, and the Queen shall ride upon the salt-foam like a duck upon a pond!”
Under his stool sat a small man named The Boy Who Smells Like Resin, because his mother had dropped him into an amber-trough when the red star Helios was high over the mountain. He had no father upon the copper-roll of the city, and he was not allowed to strike the big adze because his wrists were as thin as dry river-willows. His only task was to scrape the green slime off the old baulks and to keep the flies away from the Master’s pot of turnip-broth.
The Boy Who Smells Like Resin had two arm-casings that his grandmother had woven out of the white skin of the ghost-birch that grows upon the high scree where no goats feed. Inside the bark-cloth he had sewn the hide of an old mountain-ram that had died of eating wild onions. Through the white sheets ran sixty-four cords of pale bronze that he had pulled through a stone needle, winding round and round like the ripples when a fat frog jumps into a ditch. Upon the hollow of his hands he had bound two round pebbles of hard gum that had fallen from an old pine before the Great Fall; inside each pebble was the little green spine of a tree-hair, sleeping as if yesterday were only breakfast.
In that third spring of the great rotting, the King’s Grand Admiral came down to the shore with forty horsemen carrying long ash-sticks with copper hooks. The Admiral had a hat made of sea-otter skin and his mustache smelled of pepper-wine.
“The King goes to make war upon the Crab-Islanders!” roared the Admiral, hitting the shipwright’s bench with his hook until the shavings jumped. “He needs the Great Stem of the Ancestor! The red-trunk that was brought down from the Cloud-Crag by forty pair of oxen! Master Broad-Axe, take your twenty apprentices and carve the keel-plank, for if the King’s keel breaks upon the reef, your head shall be pinned to the sea-gate to feed the gulls!”
Master Broad-Axe ran to the great red trunk that lay in the moss. It was as long as eight bullock-carts and as thick as four fat brewers standing with their belts buckled together. Its skin was grey like an old pig, but where the axe-teeth had bitten, the meat showed as red as a butcher’s thumb.
“Look upon this mother-log!” shouted Master Broad-Axe, puffing like an old seal. “It has lived five hundred summers upon the rocky brow! It has drunk the thunder-water! No rot can dwell in its marrow! It is clean like the tooth of a dog!”
The carvers raised their heavy axes to split the outer sapwood.
Then The Boy Who Smells Like Resin crept out from beneath the shavings. He had neither adze nor iron wedge, but his two white sleeves were bound with green leather cords. He laid his thin palm upon the root-stump of the great log.
The bronze threads along his wrists began to glow with a small, pale shine, like the green beetles that dance in the rotten rushes when the night is heavy. The two gum-pebbles in his palms became warm like fresh eggs taken from under a speckled hen. He made a low blowing sound through his teeth, like the marsh-wind whistling through a broken pot: Su-ma-ri-ya-ta-no.
He shut his two eyes of meat. With the eye that has no lid—the eye the old singers call the Mind’s Eye—he did not see a red log. He saw four hundred circles of cold grease.
He saw the wide rings of the years when the skies were wet and the sheep grew two fleeces. He saw the thin, pinched rings, narrow as a fingernail, when the black dust came out of the mountain and the trees had no breath for seven seasons. And then, eighty rings down in the middle meat where the wood should have been hard like bull-horn, he saw a great gray spider-web of black wetness. It was the white-rot that walks in the night, silent like a thief with greasy soles, eating the marrow while the bark stays hard.
The boy opened his mouth and said: “Do not strike this tree with the adze for the King’s ship. In the year of the Great Black Hail, eighty turnings before this summer, the lightning-bird came down and burned the top-twig. The water went into the heart through the spit-hole. The inside of this trunk is not wood; it is only yellow mush and the dung of black beetles. If you lay this tree upon the sea, the weight of thirty men will break its belly, and the King will drink salt-mud.”
Master Broad-Axe became red like a cooked crayfish. He raised his heavy mallet of boxwood to break the boy’s head. “What does a scraper of slime know of ship-wood?” yelled the Master. “I have chopped three hundred hulls with my own two hands! This log rings like a bell of the temple!”
The Admiral frowned beneath his otter-cap and shook his copper-pointed stick. “Split the trunk upon its center! If the boy has spoken true words, we shall spare his throat. If he has lied to delay the King’s war, we shall tie his heels to the ship’s tail and drag him through the razor-grass!”
Six apprentices swung the big iron sledges. They drove four wedges of tempered copper into the belly of the Great Stem.
The wedges did not make a sweet ring like an anvil. They went flump, as if a heavy boot were stepping into a bucket of pig-porridge.
With a long, hollow groan, the Great Stem split open from crown to heel. The inside of the red trunk was not timber. It was a long, stinking trough of black slime, wet rot, and white beetle-meal that ran out into the sand like sour porridge from an old kettle. The heart of the tree was gone; only a thin skin of bark had kept the shape of the trunk, like a dry bladder blown full of wind.
The carvers stepped back, holding their noses and dropping their mallets into the gravel. Master Broad-Axe sat down upon a baulk of pine and put his dirty apron over his face, weeping because he had praised a hollow shell.
The Admiral turned his otter-skin hat toward the boy with the birch-sleeves. “You have an ear that hears the grandfather-years,” said the Admiral. “You shall come to the palace and touch the timber of the King’s granaries, for the rats have been eating the barley through the floor-planks.”
The boy did not put on shoes and he did not ask for copper pennies. He only stroked the two clear pebbles in his palms until the little green tree-hairs within the gum went to sleep, and he walked through the shavings of Erlitou with his two white sleeves smelling of pine-resin and old rivers.
The scribes who wrote this memory upon the willow-leaf could not know how the copper wire could speak to the circles inside a tree, so they made a mark that said the boy was born of an oak-nymph who had married a brass-smith during the great rain.
Moral of the Story: The loud master looks only at the red bark and strikes with a heavy hammer, but the wise man reads the quiet rings of cold seasons and knows where the rot sleeps before the ship breaks upon the salt-reef.

- Dendrochronological Sight & Reading: The wearer places both palms upon worked timber, a living tree, or ancient paper manuscripts and spends 2 Magic Points. The user attempts an Archaeology, History, Natural World, or Science (Botany) roll. On a Regular success, the user perceives the exact historical age of the wood, unmasks modern timber forgeries, detects hidden internal rot or hollows, and learns major regional climate events (such as catastrophic droughts or freezes) spanning up to 100 years of the tree’s life.
- Arboreal Resilience: The wearer receives one bonus die on CON rolls against organic plant toxins, inhaling fungal spores, or contracting woodland molds.
- Arbor Restoration: The user spends 3 Magic Points and touches an injured living creature, damaged wooden hull, or blighted flora while rolling First Aid or Natural World. On a success, the target regains 1D4+1 Hit Points (or equivalent hull integrity points), and any parasitic rot, beetle infestation, or fungal blight within a 5-foot radius is instantly eradicated.
- Sap-Lock Reaction: When an adjacent enemy makes a melee attack using a weapon with a wooden shaft (such as a spear, club, or axe), the user may spend 2 Magic Points to roll an opposed Fighting (Brawl) against the incoming attack. On a success, the strike is parried harmlessly, and thick, hyper-crystallized resin bursts from the shaft; the attacker must succeed on an Extreme STR roll or the weapon is glued in place and ripped from their grip.
- Botanical Attunement Fumble: Rolling a fumble (96–100) causes the amber discs to violently reject the user’s somatic ki, leaving the wearer’s hands rigid and numb (disadvantage/penalty die to DEX and manual skills for 1D6 hours).
Blades in the Dark
The Amber Ring Wraps
- Item Classification: Arcane Implement / Infiltration Implement (Load: 1, worn forearm and palm wraps)
- Visual Profile: Layered pale birch bark and green-dyed hide, spiraled with bronze wire loops centering on fossilized pine-needle amber stones in the palms.
- Quality Level: Tier I Quality (Fine Naturalist / Infiltration Gear)
- System Rules:
- Cambium Reading: Spend 1 Stress and place your palms against a wooden hull, floorboard, door, or timber beam to roll Study or Survey (Position: Controlled, Effect: Great). You read the growth rings of the timber, discovering the structure’s exact age, hidden secret compartments or hollow spaces inside the wood, and historical structural trauma or fire damage.
- Lignin Kinship: Gain +1 Potency to Prowl rolls when climbing wooden structures, living trellises, or ships’ rigging. Wood does not creak, splinter, or give way beneath your touch.
- Arboreal Resilience: Gain +1 Effect when resisting the physical consequences of plant poisons, toxic spores, or rotting swamp miasmas.
- Arbor Restoration: Spend 1 Stress while touching a damaged wooden vessel, barricade, or wounded ally to roll Tinker or Physick (Standard Effect). A successful action mends 1 segment of structural damage or clears a Level 1 Harm caused by lacerations, rot, or toxins.
- Sap-Lock Reaction: When an enemy attacks you in close quarters with a weapon featuring a wooden haft or handle, spend 1 Stress to execute a reaction with Skirmish. On a 4/5 or 6, a flash of hardened amber resin glues the weapon to your palm or an adjacent surface, disarming the attacker and placing them in a Vulnerable position.
- Backfire / Complication Hazard: On a 1–3 or a compromised devil’s bargain, the vegetative connection overwhelms your sense of biological time, ticking a clock titled Dazed by Plant Memory or Entangled by Creeping Vines.
Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)
Reiki Wraps of the Timber Ring Palm
- Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement)
- Armor Class Bonus: While wearing these wraps and not wearing heavy armor, you gain a +1 bonus to AC.
- Passive Abilities:
- Dendrochronological Sight: You have advantage on Intelligence (History), Intelligence (Nature), and Wisdom (Perception) checks made to determine the age of wooden objects, detect forgeries in wood or paper, locate hidden hollows or rot inside timber, or climb wooden surfaces and living trees.
- Arboreal Resilience: You have advantage on saving throws against poison damage and the poisoned condition caused by plants, fungi, and spores.
- Charges & Recovery: The wraps have 3 charges and regain 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn.
- Cambium Chrono-Reading: As an action, you can expend 1 charge and touch a wooden object, living tree, or petrified wood. You magically perceive the tree’s growth rings, learning up to 100 years of environmental history recorded in the wood (including droughts, severe blights, and fires), as well as the exact location of any structural weak points.
- Arbor Restoration: As an action, you can expend 1 charge to channel soothing restorative ki into a creature, plant, or wooden object you touch. A living creature or construct regains 1d4 + your Wisdom modifier in hit points. If used on a wooden object or plant, it repairs structural splits and purges all non-magical rot, parasites, and fungal growth within a 5-foot radius.
- Sap-Lock Reaction: When you are targeted by a melee weapon attack made with a weapon that has a wooden handle or shaft, you can use your reaction to expend 1 charge to slap the weapon. The attacker must make a DC 12 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the attack misses, thick resin instantly coats the haft, and the weapon is ripped from the attacker’s hands, landing on the ground at your feet.

If you succeed with style, you inflict no stress; instead, resin surges from the shaft, disarming the attacker and applying the situation aspect Weapon Glued Down with two free invokes.
- Flaw Hazard: If an opponent invokes your Trouble aspect, the sheer weight of centuries-long growth-ring memories floods your senses, applying the temporary situational aspect Root-Bound and Distracted.
