Reflecting 47 of the Sappers Tripwire Bracer

  • Lore: Forged originally in the subterranean siege-trenches and collapsed mining shafts beneath the Iron Ridge of Saṃsāra, this forearm apparatus was constructed for vanguard sappers and tomb scouts tasked with leading breaching parties through ancient, mechanism-choked ruins. In these dead subterranean complexes, a single pressurized plate, tension wire, or concealed scything blade could sever limbs before an expedition even laid eyes upon an enemy. Drawing upon fluid collection techniques to distill the acoustic sensitivity of cave bats and the vibrational tension of subterranean trap-spiders, the artisan bound sympathetic vibration runes into an articulated iron and leather cuff. The bracer achieved legendary status among frontier dungeoneers: its hair-thin copper feelers could detect the subtle strain of loaded springs and counterweights behind solid masonry, and should an unspotted trap or a defensive dungeon ambush snap shut upon the scout, the bracer would forcefully invert the lethal kinetic mechanism, casting the concussive trauma straight outward into every ambushing beast or lurker waiting in the passage.
  • Description: The apparatus consists of an articulated forearm vambrace crafted from layered cold-forged iron plates riveted over thick, oiled badger hide. Along the dorsal side of the forearm runs a row of five delicate, flexible copper acoustic needles that sway with ambient air currents, registering acoustic anomalies and mechanical tension. Encased in a brass shock-housing over the wrist is a polished, convex silvered lens etched with crosshair calibration marks and spiral wards of inversion. On the interior lining, two fine lead sensor prongs maintain continuous contact with the avatar’s radial pulse. When a mechanical hazard or tension cord is near, the needles hum with a faint, pitchy drone; when the wearer is struck in combat, the central lens flares with a sudden, brilliant white-blue flash, discharging a sound like a heavy bear-trap slamming shut on cold stone as retaliatory force rips through the air.
  • Item Slot: Wrists Slot
  • Stats:
    • Item Tier: Tier 1 (Common)
    • Item Hit Points: 10 plus wearer maximum health points (Resilience 10 x Tier 1)
    • Armor Check (AC) Bonus: +1
    • Weight: 1.5 pounds
    • Attunement: Requires 1 minute of concentration to strap the badger-hide lining securely to the forearm, align the radial pulse needles, and synchronize the acoustic feelers through the Mind’s Eye.
  • Passive Magic:
    • Sympathetic Spring-Shatter: Whenever the wearer sustains damage from an attack or triggered physical hazard, the wrist lens instantly unleashes an omnidirectional shockwave of retaliatory force matching the exact damage type and numerical value of the injury received. This wave strikes all hostile entities within a radius in feet equal to the damage points sustained. If another entity within this blast radius bears an active reflective ward or similar counter-kinetic enchantment, an uncontrolled harmonic resonance triggers immediately, threatening catastrophic vaporization of all creatures in the vicinity within a single turn.
    • Tension Resonance: While exploring dungeons, corridors, or wilderness trails, the copper needles vibrate in response to hidden mechanical stress. The wearer gains a +2 bonus to perception and investigation checks made to locate non-magical traps, concealed pressure plates, tripwires, spring-loaded darts, and counterweighted deadfalls within 20 feet.
    • Brace for Detonation: The wearer is reinforced against environmental collapsing trauma, taking 2 less damage (minimum of 0) from collapsing masonry, falling ceiling gravel, and shrapnel thrown by mechanical detonations.
  • Activable Magic:
    • Sapper’s Disengagement Spring: As an action during melee or immediately upon triggering an unexpected hazard, the wearer can snap their wrist to release a pressurized burst of stored kinetic spring-force from the lens. On a hit against an adjacent target, this delivers base bludgeoning damage plus the avatar’s tier die (1d4), driving the target 5 feet backward. This knock-back can be utilized to push suspicious combatants out of close quarters, breaking proximity before a lethal harmonic loop can ignite if the opponent is suspected of carrying counter-enchantments.
    • Tripwire Sonar Flare: Once per exploration or combat encounter as an action, the wearer may channel mana to pluck the central copper needle, sending an imperceptible high-frequency acoustic ping through the surrounding 30 feet. For one minute, the physical outlines of all hidden tripwires, tension cords, and floor-trigger seams within line of sight faintly glow with pale blue light to the wearer’s vision.
    • Tension Calming Pulse: Outside of combat as an action, the wearer can depress the wrist housing to release a mild alchemical numbing tincture through the radial prongs, settling trembling nerves and restoring 1 temporary health point that lasts until the end of the next exploration phase.

Procurement and Commerce of the Sapper’s Tripwire Bracer

  • Miners’ Guild Provisioners and Subterranean Supply Depots:
    • Situated along the perimeter of deep pit-heads, shaft lift elevators, and subterranean quarry complexes, these sturdy shops cater directly to blasting engineers, tunnel cutters, and deep scouts. The bracer is kept inside padlocked iron chests beside bundles of fuse cord, acoustic listening horns, and spring-gauges.
    • Purchasing cost: 120 to 160 silver coins (or 12 to 16 electrum coins). Guild members holding a valid Delver’s or Excavator’s License receive the standard 10% commercial discount per character tier, reducing the price to 108 to 144 silver coins for a Tier 1 purchaser. Payment is deducted directly from the buyer’s balance in the World Bank via the Mind’s Eye.
    • Selling value: The depot master inspects the wear along the badger-hide lining and tests the spring tension of the copper acoustic needles, offering roughly 10% of base valuation per seller tier (12 to 16 silver coins for a Tier 1 avatar). Credits are recorded directly to the seller’s World Bank ledger, alongside mandatory logistical filings for mining district operations.
  • Frontier Adventuring Guild Outposts and Pioneer Forts:
    • Established at frontier crossings, deep crater camps, and staging forts at the edges of uncharted ruins, these depots supply expedition point-scouts and frontline dungeon crawlers. The apparatus is displayed along heavy timber counters next to grappling hooks, chalk markers, and crowbars.
    • Purchasing cost: 10 electrum coins (equivalent to 50 silver coins) for registered adventurers in good standing with the local garrison. Freelancers and uncredentialed wanderers must pay an unnegotiated flat rate of 120 silver coins, settled in physical coin or direct electronic registry.
    • Selling value: Quartermasters acquire recovered units as dungeon salvage, compensating the seller with 8 to 10 silver coins deposited directly into their World Bank ledger. These transactions are logged under regional expedition recovery efforts, exempting the sale from provincial road tariffs.
  • Underground Fence Vaults and Salvager Dens:
    • Tucked within forgotten drainage conduits, illicit tunnel junctions, and back-alley scrap yards in heavy industrial factory zones, these brokers deal in unmarked relics pulled from ancient crypts or looted from perished delvers.
    • Purchasing cost: 18 to 25 gold coins (equivalent to 180 to 250 silver coins). Dealers demand an exorbitant markup for untraceable hardware, accepting only physical coinage of standard mint weight and flatly refusing World Bank digital accounting.
    • Selling value: Salvage fences offer 20 to 30 silver coins in hand-to-hand silver coin for an intact unit with undamaged copper feelers, keeping the exchange completely off city registries. If the local watch or sapper guilds are actively conducting sweeps through the warrens, the payout is cut down to a flat 10 silver coins.
  • Itinerant Tinker Caravans and Exploration Outfitter Wagons:
    • Rolling between border boom-towns, surface excavations, and outpost clearings atop armored flatbed wagons, these mobile merchants sell exploratory equipment to prospectors who cannot travel to major urban hubs.
    • Purchasing cost: 14 to 18 electrum coins (70 to 90 silver value). Prices fluctuate upward depending on how close the wagon is to perilous, trap-laden ruin sectors, with the tinker factoring in the mandatory 1% World Bank transit fee and local route protection taxes.
    • Selling value: Wandering tinkers maintain lean coin boxes and offer 7 to 9 silver coins in weighed local specie, or an equal value in blasting powder kegs, iron pitons, or raw grease flasks. Transactions can be settled through World Bank transfers if the wagon carries an attuned communication ledger, or through standard weight-measured bar silver.

Tactical Inquiries and Vambrace Roleplay across Environments

  • Ancient Dungeon Corridors, Crypt Vaults, and Sunken Ruins:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Advancing at the head of an expedition down a narrow flagstone corridor, the avatar extends their arm forward as the five copper needles sway and whine with high-pitched vibration. If the scout accidentally depresses a concealed flagstone that drops a five-hundred-pound granite block or unleashes a volley of iron wall-darts, the lethal kinetic crushing force collides directly with the wrist’s silvered focal lens. With a sound like a massive steel bear-trap snapping shut, the bracer absorbs the fatal blow and detonates a spherical shockwave outward, crushing ambushing dungeon spiders and wall-creepers hiding in the shadows while the avatar remains standing uncrushed amid the dust.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Entering an ancient burial chamber rigged with counterweighted scything blades and trip cords, the avatar activates the Tripwire Sonar Flare by plucking the central copper feeler. The acoustic ping illuminates hidden mechanical trip-lines in glowing blue across the masonry. Sighting an animated construct or tomb guardian guarding the portal, the avatar uses the Sapper’s Disengagement Spring to fire a pressurized kinetic burst into its chassis, launching the construct backward directly across its own tripwires to trigger a collapsing ceiling deadfall upon itself.
  • Subterranean Mining Shafts, Smuggling Sewers, and Cavern Depths:
    • Defensive Roleplay: In pitch-black water tunnels where footing is treacherous and cutthroat smugglers lay pressure-triggered net-traps and spike-pits, ambushes are sudden. When a concealed spiked log swings out from the sewer dark to impale the vanguard, the impact against the cold-forged iron plating triggers the Sympathetic Spring-Shatter. The retaliatory shockwave blasts the concealed ambushers out of their drainage niches and slams them into the slimy brickwork with the kinetic power of their own swinging trap, clearing the passage instantly.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Confronting a rogue dwarven sapper or an underworld demolitions expert who is known to carry defensive kinetic wards or counter-reflection amulets, standard close-quarters fighting presents an immediate threat of mutual annihilation. Spotting the telltale harmonic hum of the adversary’s gear through the Mind’s Eye, the avatar snaps their wrist to trigger the Sapper’s Disengagement Spring. The concussive blast strikes the saboteur in the chest, rocketing them five feet backward into their own cache of unprimed blasting barrels, ensuring safe tactical separation before any lethal harmonic loop can ignite.
  • Frontier Fortifications, Trenches, and Palisade Chokepoints:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Manning an earthen redoubt during a nighttime raid where the outer ditch has been seeded with explosive buried canisters and caltrops, chaotic crossfire is guaranteed. When an enemy siege engine flings a jagged shrapnel bomb that detonates on the parapet right in front of the avatar, the bracer absorbs the blast shrapnel. The retaliatory wave turns the fragmentation force into a concussive ring that sweeps the scaling ladders off the palisade, neutralizing the sappers climbing the ditch below.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Leading a counter-breach into an enemy mining sap, the avatar detects the tension of a buried mine under the loose dirt. Intentionally lunging forward with a heavy boot to trip the mechanism while raising the bracer, the avatar channels the entire directional blast through the wrist lens, projecting an omnidirectional wall of concussive force through the narrow trench that flattens the opposing assault squad while shielding the friendly riflemen behind.
  • Crowded Industrial Machine Shops, Foundries, and Clockwork Guilds:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Navigating steam-driven factory floors filled with whirling flywheels, high-tension pneumatic pistons, and trip-lever cranes, industrial sabotage often manifests as sudden mechanical “accidents.” When a crane cable is intentionally severed to drop a pallet of pig iron onto the investigator’s head, the bracer’s Brace for Detonation absorbs the collapsing debris, while the reflective ward detonates outward to throw the saboteurs lurking near the control levers to the floor.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Chasing a corporate spy through a labyrinth of exposed gearboxes and pressurized boiler valves, the avatar uses the Tripwire Sonar Flare to immediately discern which release levers are under active pressure. As the fugitive attempts to cut a high-pressure steam valve to scald the pursuing party, the avatar fires the Sapper’s Disengagement Spring, blasting the saboteur five feet back away from the valve wheel and pinning them against a steel boiler before they can compromise the facility.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Sight: A piercing flare of bright, glacial-blue and silver luminescence erupts directly from the wrist housing, sending geometric, spiral-etched rings of light sweeping outward across the surrounding stones and dirt.
    • Hearing: A sharp, deafening acoustic snap resembling a massive iron bear-trap springing shut on granite rings in the user’s ears, immediately followed by a low, rhythmic hum through the forearm plating.
    • Smell: A pungent, dry scent of sheared cold iron, pulverized rock dust, scorched badger hide, and ionized electrical ozone washes into the nostrils.
    • Taste: A bitter, copper-like metallic tang coats the palate as the lead sensor needles conduct galvanic discharge into the radial nerve pathways.
    • Touch: The five copper dorsal needles violently shudder against the wrist, while the inner badger-hide lining contracts tightly around the forearm bones with an unyielding, compressive hydraulic grip that absorbs the crushing shock.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Mind’s Eye): Threat vectors and dynamic radius rings ignite in the user’s internal vision, calculating the precise kinetic tonnage of the triggered trap or incoming attack alongside the expanding perimeter of the retaliatory shockwave.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Tension Resonance Sense): An intuitive harmonic pulse ripples through the avatar’s awareness, detailing hidden fault lines, coiled counterweights, and loaded trip cords within the masonry as glowing blue stress-lines.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Sight: The incoming hazard, swinging blade, or weapon blow strikes the vanguard’s forearm, but instead of crushing bone, the point of impact explodes into a blinding silver-blue shockwave that ripples through the chamber air like a expanding circle of frosted glass.
    • Hearing: Nearby spectators hear a thunderous, mechanical crack like an iron portcullis dropping onto bedrock, accompanied by a sharp, ear-splitting ringing that echoes down the stone corridor.
    • Smell: Witnesses detect an acrid odor of fried copper wire, shattered mortar, and electrical discharge riding on a sudden outward gust of displaced air.
    • Taste: Those caught within the blast perimeter experience an alkaline, dry grit at the back of the throat caused by pulverized rock particles and air compression.
    • Touch: Hostile creatures and lurkers within the blast radius feel an instantaneous, bone-rattling concussive wave hammer into their frames, matching the exact violence and weight of the blow struck against the sapper, lifting them off their feet and slamming them into walls or floor seams.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Arcane Sight): Sorcerers and sensitive beings observe an intricate spiderweb of glowing blue runes and tension-lattices violently uncoil from the wrist bezel, seizing the incoming kinetic force and snapping it backward into the environment.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Acoustic Tremorsense): Creatures sensitive to ground vibrations feel the floorboards and ceiling slabs shudder with a sharp subterranean frequency that reveals hidden void chambers and hollow trigger-stones nearby.
  • Positives:
    • Kinetic Retaliation and Inversion: Automatically turns sudden structural crushes, falling rocks, or melee ambushes into an omnidirectional defensive blast that punishes every surrounding hostile without requiring an attack action.
    • Skeletal Reinforcement: The rigid cold-forged iron and badger-hide dampeners protect the scout’s wrist and arm from compound fractures or crushing amputations during dungeon collapses.
    • Spatial Trap Revelation: The acoustic pulse illuminates hidden mechanical triggers, tension wires, and counterweighted deadfalls in the immediate area.
  • Negatives:
    • High-Decibel Acoustic Flash: The concussive bear-trap roar can cause temporary ringing in the ears and instantly strips the adventuring party of stealth or surprise in quiet dungeon depths.
    • Catastrophic Resonance Risk: If an ambushing creature or rogue sapper within the radius possesses an active kinetic mirror or reflective ward, the overlapping fields will trigger an immediate, lethal harmonic detonation capable of obliterating everyone in the room.
    • Forearm Nerve Strain: Repeated discharges cause numbness and a stinging pins-and-needles sensation along the radial nerve, slightly dulling fine finger dexterity for a short duration following the blast.

Crafting Recipe: The Sapper’s Tripwire Bracer

  • Materials Needed:
    • One Tier 1 magic crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted, harvested from a slain creature to act as the kinetic and vibrational power reservoir).
    • One square foot of cured, oil-treated badger hide (providing resilient, shock-dampening subcutaneous lining).
    • Two sheets of cold-forged iron plate (roughly 16-gauge, hammered and curved for the articulating dorsal forearm segments).
    • One convex silvered crystal glass medallion (one and a half inches in diameter, free of flaws, to serve as the kinetic inversion focal lens).
    • Five flexible copper acoustic wires (drawn thin to function as ambient tension feelers).
    • Two fine lead contact prongs (to form the internal radial pulse sensors).
    • One brass shock-housing bezel and retaining collar (to seat the lens and battery).
    • Four small brass rivets and two adjustable leather cinch straps fitted with iron roller buckles.
    • Half an ounce of powdered lodestone and pulverized quartz crystal (acting as the acoustic flux and sympathetic conductive agent).
    • One steel tripwire snare or spring-loaded iron jaw-trap (sacrificial mechanical component consumed during forging to imprint trap-sensing and tension-reversal properties into the chassis).
  • Tools Required:
    • Ball-peen hammer, chasing chisels, and a miniature steel bench anvil.
    • Metal shears, leather punches, awls, and heavy saddler’s needles.
    • Jeweler’s piercing saw and diamond-tipped hand engraving burrs.
    • Alcohol spirit lamp or miniature charcoal forge with crucible.
    • Fine wire-drawing plate and round-nose bending pliers.
    • Fluid collector syringe and mineral grinding mortar and pestle.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Armoring / Blacksmithing: Minimum Skill Level 5.
    • Mechanical Engineering / Trap-Smithing: Minimum Skill Level 4.
    • Kinetic Inscription / Mind’s Eye Calibration: Minimum Skill Level 3.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Step 1 (Plate Forming and Articulation): Cut and hammer the cold-forged iron plates over a forearm mandrel, shaping two overlapping curved segments to allow natural wrist flexion. Bevel the edges and drill mounting holes along the margins for strap rivets and wire guides.
    • Step 2 (Sacrificial Trap Decomposition): Place the sacrificial spring-loaded jaw-trap into the crucible over the forge flame, dusting it with powdered lodestone and pulverized quartz. Heat the metal until its temper breaks and the structure dissolves into slag, channeling its latent properties of stored kinetic tension directly into the molten brass alloy used for the wrist bezel.
    • Step 3 (Lining and Radial Sensor Mounting): Cut and wet-form the badger hide to match the interior curve of the iron plates. Insert the two lead contact prongs through the leather near the carpal band, angling them so their blunt tips will rest directly over the wearer’s radial pulse points to feed physical rhythm into the apparatus.
    • Step 4 (Reflective Lens Inscription): Using the diamond-tipped graver under magnification, micro-etch concentric spiral wards of kinetic inversion and crosshair calibration lines into the reverse silvered backing of the crystal medallion. Seal the etched patterns with a thin coat of clear tree-resin lacquer.
    • Step 5 (Battery and Core Housing Assembly): Seat the Tier 1 magic crystal into the base of the cast brass bezel housing. Position the inscribed silvered medallion directly over the crystal, rolling the brass rim inward with a burnisher to mechanically lock both components together in continuous physical contact.
    • Step 6 (Acoustic Feeler Integration): Solder the five flexible copper wires into the forward brass collar of the lens housing, fanning them out along the dorsal plate in parallel lines. Run fine insulated thread along the plate channel to tether the feelers back to the internal crystal core so that physical vibrations transmit directly into the arcane battery.
    • Step 7 (Assembly, Riveting, and Calibration): Rivet the articulated iron plates to the badger-hide lining and affix the leather cinch straps and iron buckles. Fasten the completed wrist housing securely to the dorsal plate. Strike the iron frame with a padded wooden mallet while projecting focus through the Mind’s Eye to verify that the crystal absorbs the impact and the lens discharges a pale blue vibrational ring. Oil the leather and store the finished Tier 1 bracer in a moisture-sealed oilcloth wrap until attunement begins.

Iron Ditch and Five Whiskers of Durna-Digger

Read now the crooked lines that were scraped upon the yellow mud by the third deaf mason of the low canal, who knew neither the elder tongue of the mountain goats nor the sharp signs of the iron hammer. In the years before the sky-fire grew cold, when the moon Saṃsāra had not yet swallowed its third red cloud, the people did not live upon the fat hills where the barley stands straight. They lived below the dirt, in the black veins of the stone, where the earth grumbled like a sick ox and the water ran with the taste of crushed lead.

In those days, the King of the Pit, whose mark upon the bricks was Zabu-of-the-Heavy-Foot, built for his gold-pots a great house beneath the mountain. It was not a house for sheep, nor a house for wives, but a cave of eleven stone rooms, each shut with a door of green copper. But Zabu was a lord of great terror, whose belly shook whenever the wind blew down the shaft, for he thought every poor carrier of dirt desired to slide his hand into the copper pots. Therefore, he called to his bench the makers of deadfall cords and the carvers of hidden teeth.

These makers took iron wires as thin as the hair of a dead girl, and they stretched them across the thresholds. They balanced slabs of grey granite three cubits thick upon dry cedar wedges, so that if a man’s sandal did touch but one grain of sand out of place, the ceiling would fall upon his head like an iron pot upon an egg. They bored round holes through the painted plaster of the walls, packing them with iron darts smeared with the grease of the blind cave-worms that cause the blood to turn into yellow milk. And when the eleven rooms were full of springs, counter-stones, and biting cords, Zabu slew the makers of the traps with stone clubs, casting their bodies into the sulfur wells that no mouth might tell where the tripwires lay asleep.

Now among the carriers of the baskets was a small man named Durna, who had no cattle, no silver, and only half of an ear, which had been torn away by a falling bucket in his seventh winter. Durna was not a captain of five score, nor did he blow the goat-horn for the King. His duty was to crawl through the narrow drains where the water smelled of sulfur, dragging behind him a basket of split shale. Yet Durna possessed a hand that was quiet like a spider upon a leaf; he could touch a thread of dry moss without breaking its knot, and his eyes could see the small cracks in the stone where the poisonous moisture wept.

The overseers of Zabu’s ditch came down into the dark sap and seized Durna by his rags, shouting: “Up, crawler of the drain! For the King has forgotten which copper door holds his dried cakes of silver and which door holds the falling roof! He commands that three carriers walk before him into the third vault to prove the stones. If thou walkest safely, thou shalt receive two hands of pulse and a cake of salt; if thou fallest, the ditch shall have another mouthful of red mud!”

Two carriers walked before Durna, young men who had large calves and carried bronze lamps. The first young man stepped upon a flagstone that was smooth like river oil; but beneath the stone was a hollow tooth of bronze, and when his weight fell, an iron jaw leaped from the floor-dust and tore his foot away at the ankle-bone. The second young man leaped backward in his terror, but his shoulder touched a cord of twisted horse-hair hidden in the wall-crevice; a great slab of green slate swung down from the roof like the tail of a river-lizard, breaking his spine into three pieces and driving his lamp into the sand.

Durna stood upon the cold rock, his basket held against his belly, his breath cold like cellar water. The overseers behind him shouted through their iron tubes: “Walk on, dog of the ditch, or the spear-points shall push thee into the teeth!” But Durna would not step. He threw his basket upon the dead boy’s blood and turned his face into the deep crack of the wall where the air was wet. He sat upon his haunches for forty days and forty nights, while the red sun Helios rolled outside like an angry copper plate, drinking only the cold sweat that ran down the granite walls.

He took the hide of an old cave-badger that had died in the drain, rubbing it with the bitter grease of the black shale until the leather was stiff like boiled horn. He took two plates of raw iron that had been dropped by the smelters, pounding them between two river-stones until they curved around his left forearm like the bark of an elder tree. Along the dorsal spine of the iron plates, he fixed five long whiskers of beaten copper, drawn through the eye of a bone bodkin until they trembled whenever a moth flew past in the dark.

Over the bone of his wrist, he bound a round stone of clear star-glass with a back of silvered solder, taken from the broken cup of a dead stone-cutter. Upon the silver he scratched the sign of the reversed wedge—the mark that says the stone that falls from the roof shall not crush the earth, but shall fly back into the hole whence it broke. And into the underside of the hide, where the leather hugged the red pulse of his wrist-vein, he drove two blunt prongs of cold lead, so that his heart-beat might walk through the copper whiskers like the hum of an angry bee.

“If the master of the mountain digs pits for the feet that bring him bread,” spoke Durna unto the dripping stone, “then let the weight of the stone return to the hand that hung it.”

He buckled the badger-vambrace around his left arm. The two lead prongs bit into his vein like the leech of the marsh, and the five copper whiskers on his forearm began to hum with a shrill, dry song, singing like a beetle trapped in a clay pot. Whenever he turned his fist toward a hidden stone that was hollowed for a counterweight, the whiskers leaned forward and trembled like grass in the mountain wind; whenever a thread of silk was stretched across his path, the silver glass upon his wrist shone with a pale, cold eye the color of wet lime.

He climbed up out of the wet drain and entered into the Great Hall of the Eleven Vaults where the King Zabu sat upon his high seat of granite slabs, surrounded by fifty spearmen whose shields were covered in bull-leather.

“Art thou still breathing, dog of the ditch?” barked the King through his beard of curly gold wires. “Where are the two boys who carried the copper lamps?”

“They are broken into the stones, O lord of the mud,” said Durna, standing small upon the flags, his arm bound in the rough iron and the five copper needles singing their dry cricket-song. “Their blood has watered thy threshold, and thy silver remains shut behind the third door. But I have brought an iron spade to dig out thy secret.”

The King laughed with a throat full of bile. “If thou hast an iron spade, then walk into the Hall of the Scythes! Go forward, thou crooked rat, and bring forth the pot of red electrum that sits upon the altar, or my spearmen shall peg thee out for the cave-ants!”

Durna did not ask for a torch, nor did he look upon the iron spears. He walked straight through the copper archway into the vault of the scythes. The King and his fifty spearmen crowded into the opening behind him, grinning with their teeth to see the small carrier torn asunder by the hidden iron.

Three paces within the dark, Durna’s copper whiskers shrieked like a hawk. Ahead of his left boot lay a cord of black gut, invisible against the damp pavement, tied to the release-pin of a two-thousand-pound pendulum of iron-bound granite suspended above the vault ceiling. Durna did not leap aside. He did not turn his back. He raised his left arm, holding the silvered medallion toward the ceiling, and stamped his heavy heel directly upon the black gut cord.

The release-pin flew with a shriek of rusted iron.

The two-thousand-pound granite slab descended from the darkness above like the wrath of the sky-bull, whistling through the black air, fast enough to smear an army into red paste upon the floor. It struck directly upon the raised iron bracer and the silvered glass of Durna’s forearm.

Yet the carrier’s bones did not crack. His elbow did not bend, nor was his sandal driven into the pavement. From the silvered lens there erupted an acoustic roar that was not like thunder, but like forty great bear-traps of beaten bronze slamming shut upon the anvil of the world in the same beat of a heart. A great ring of blinding blue fire, razor-thin and whistling with the fury of broken springs, rushed outward in an even circle thirty paces wide.

The descending granite slab did not hit the floor; the concussive fury of its own two-thousand-pound drop was turned back into its own throat. The great rock broke into a hundred smoking fragments that flew upward, smashing into the roof and ripping the stones of the vault asunder. And the shockwave did not spare the watchers at the door.

The King Zabu and his fifty spearmen were lifted from their heels by an invisible wedge of screaming air. Their bull-hide shields were peeled into dry strings, their iron breastplates were crushed inward against their ribs like stamped clay pots, and their bodies were thrown backward twenty paces through the arched hallway, piling them into a broken heap of groaning meat and shattered spear-shafts upon the court flagstones.

The King lay upon his belly, his curly gold wires fouled with dirt, his hips broken by the backfire of his own trap, coughing out teeth and weeping into the gravel.

Durna walked out through the dust of the shattered granite. His badger-hide vambrace hummed with a quiet, satisfied vibration, and the five copper whiskers leaned peacefully against the cold iron. He did not touch the copper pots of electrum, nor did he look upon the King’s gold. He picked up his basket of split shale that lay by the door, shook the white dust from his rags, and walked past the broken spearmen out into the sunshine of the mountain gorge, never again to crawl in the dark beneath the ground.

The later singers of the salt-pits tell that the bracer was carried for two hundred turnings of the moon by the sappers of the deep trenches, and wherever an engineer walked with the five copper whiskers, no hidden pit could hold its secret, and no falling ceiling could crush the men who marched beneath its blue mirror; for every snare that was pulled against the wearer turned its iron jaws upon the hands that had loaded the spring.

Moral of the Story: He who hangs a heavy stone above his brother’s path shall be broken by the falling of the same rock.

  • Subterranean Senses: When you make a Survey or Tinker roll to locate hidden tripwires, tension cords, concealed pit-traps, or mechanical triggers in dungeons or ruins, you operate with +1 Effect level. The copper needles hum with an audible vibration near mechanical tension.
  • Special Armor — Trap-Spring Backfire: You may mark your Special Armor (or take 2 Stress) to trigger the bracer’s reactive kinetic release when you suffer physical Harm from a melee strike or triggered trap:
    • Effect: The incoming crushing or slashing violence is captured and discharged outward in a deafening acoustic shockwave. The striking adversary or triggering hazard inflicts Harm equal in level to the raw Harm you sustained (e.g., suffering Level 2 Harm deals Level 2 Harm to the attacker).
    • Resonance Hazard: If an enemy within close range carries an active ghost shield, electroplasmic barrier, or protective warding amulet, a harmonic detonation triggers: mark 3 Stress, absorb no incoming Harm, and all targets in the immediate area suffer Level 3 Harm (“Shattered Bones and Ruptured Eardrums”).
  • Push Yourself (Spring Shove): When you make a Skirmish or Wreck roll to physically shove or clear an adversary away from close quarters, spend 1 Stress to gain +1d or increase effect to Great Effect, driving the target a dozen feet backward with a mechanical acoustic crack.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition, 2024 Revision)

Sapper’s Tripwire Bracer

  • Wondrous Item, Common (Requires Attunement)
  • Item Slot: Wrists
  • Armor Class Bonus: While wearing this bracer, you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class, provided you are not wearing heavy plate armor that already includes full forearm gauntlets.
  • Description: An articulated vambrace of cold-forged iron over thick badger hide, mounting five acoustic copper feelers along the dorsal forearm and a silvered crystal lens over the wrist.
  • Subterranean Awareness: You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks made to detect non-magical traps, concealed tripwires, pressure plates, and mechanical triggers within 20 feet. In addition, you have resistance to bludgeoning damage caused by falling rocks, cave-ins, and collapsing ceiling debris.
  • Sympathetic Spring-Shatter: When a creature within 5 feet of you hits you with a melee attack and deals damage to you, you can use your reaction to trigger the wrist lens’s kinetic ward. The attacker takes force damage equal to half the damage you sustained from the attack (minimum of 1 damage).
    • Resonance Calamity: If the attacker is protected by a spell or magic item that reflects or retaliates against damage (such as Armor of Agathys, Fire Shield, or a similar ward), both you and the attacker must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, both creatures take 3d6 force damage and are pushed 10 feet away from each other; on a successful save, each takes half as much damage and is not pushed.
  • Sapper’s Disengagement Spring: As an action, you can flick your wrist to release a concussive burst of stored mechanical spring-force at an adjacent creature. Make a melee attack roll using your Strength or Dexterity modifier. On a hit, the target takes 1d4 bludgeoning damage, and if the target is Medium or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw or be pushed 5 feet directly away from you.

Knave (2nd Edition)

Durna’s Spring-Vambrace

  • Item Slots: 1 Item Slot (Hands/Arms, counts toward carried encumbrance).
  • Item Armor: +1 Armor Check (AC 12 when combined with standard unarmored base of 11).
  • Quality/Durability: 3/3 Quality.
  • Description: A heavy iron-plated cuff lined with badger hide, fitted with five flexible copper feelers and a silvered glass medallion over the wrist joint.
  • Trap Sense: Grants the wearer Advantage on Wisdom and Intelligence checks made to spot hidden mechanical tripwires, floor-plate triggers, deadfalls, and spring-loaded mechanisms before they are stepped upon.
  • Mechanical Rebound: When an adjacent enemy hits the wearer in melee or a triggered mechanical trap deals HP damage, the wearer may test Constitution (rolling a d20 + Constitution bonus vs. DC 15) as an immediate reaction:
    • Success: The wrist lens discharges a concussive roar like a massive iron bear-trap snapping shut. The attacker or triggering target takes damage equal to the damage dealt to the wearer, and the vambrace loses 1 point of Quality.
    • Failure: The ward fails to invert the kinetic impact; the wearer takes damage normally without reflection.
    • Resonance Shatter: If the striking foe has an active protective barrier or magical armor enchantment, the overlapping enchantments detonate: the vambrace drops to 0 Quality (broken), the enemy’s ward shatters, and both combatants take 2d6 direct concussive damage.
  • Spring-Loaded Repulsion: Once per combat encounter, the wearer can spend an action to make a Strength check against an enemy’s Strength defense to trigger the stored kinetic spring-jet. On a success, the foe is knocked back 10 feet and loses their next movement action.

Fate (Fate Condensed)

Durna’s Acoustic Tripwire Vambrace

  • Aspects:
    • High Concept: Cold-Forged Sapper Vambrace of Kinetic Inversion
    • Trouble: Catastrophic Harmonic Detonation
    • Additional Aspect: Acoustic Subterranean Trap Sensor
  • Stunts:
    • Sympathetic Spring-Shatter: Once per conflict, when you defend against a close-quarters physical attack or a triggered mechanical trap with Fight or Athletics and succeed with style, instead of taking a boost, you may inflict physical stress on the attacker (or nearest hostile) equal to the incoming shift value prior to reduction. If invoked with a Fate point when suffering physical stress from an adjacent melee strike or physical trap, the striking opponent or trigger area suffers an immediate physical hit with shifts equal to the stress you suffered.
    • Resonance Hazard: If an opponent possesses an active mystical barrier, reactive armor, or kinetic deflection stunt, any triggered backlash forces both you and the attacker to immediately defend against a Great (+4) Fair-wide concussive eruption. Everyone in the zone takes shifts of stress on a failed defense.
    • Tension Resonance: You gain a +2 bonus to Notice or Crafts when actively searching for concealed mechanical tripwires, floor-plate triggers, deadfalls, and spring-loaded traps in enclosed or underground environments.
    • Sapper’s Disengagement Spring: You gain a +2 to Overcome or Create an Advantage using Physique when bull-rushing, checking, or driving a target back out of close combat range using the wrist lens’s kinetic spring-pulse.

Numenera & Cypher System

The Sapper’s Kinetic Tripwire Bracer

  • Level: 3 (Artifact)
  • Form: An articulated iron forearm cuff lined with thick badger hide, mounting five thin copper acoustic feelers along the arm and a silvered convex focal lens over the wrist.
  • Depletion: 1 in 1d20 (checked upon triggering the reflective detonation).
  • Armor: Adds +1 to Armor against physical attacks directed at the arms or torso, and reduces incoming damage from collapsing rock or mechanical trap detonations by 1.
  • Effect:
    • Reactive Spring-Shatter: Whenever the wearer suffers physical damage from a melee strike or triggered physical trap within immediate range, the wrist lens releases a concussive shockwave resembling a massive iron jaw-trap snapping shut. The attacking creature or adjacent hostile target immediately suffers physical damage (ignoring Armor) equal to the raw damage points dealt to the wearer.
    • Harmonic Calamity: If the striking opponent is shielded by an active force field, personal energy shield, or defensive warding esotery, the harmonic interference causes an immediate overload: the artifact depletes automatically, the opponent’s defensive field collapses, and all creatures within short range suffer 6 points of ambient kinetic damage.
    • Subterranean Acoustic Sensor: The wearer gains an asset on all Perception and salvage/crafting tasks involving the detection of concealed tripwires, pressure plates, and mechanical dungeon traps.
    • Sapper’s Disengagement Spring: As an action, the wearer may spend 1 Might point to discharge a directional burst of stored spring-force. On a successful Might attack roll, an adjacent target suffers 3 points of damage and is knocked back an immediate distance.

Pathfinder (Second Edition Remaster)

Bracer of the Sapper’s Rebound

  • Item 3, Uncommon, Invested, Magical
  • Price: 55 gp
  • Usage: Worn bracers (occupies the wrists slot); Bulk: L
  • Subterranean Awareness: The wearer gains a +1 item bonus to Perception checks to Seek hidden hazards and mechanical traps, and to Thievery checks to Disable a Device of mechanical origin. The wearer gains resistance 2 to bludgeoning damage caused by falling rocks, ceiling collapses, and mechanical deadfalls.

    • Trigger: An adjacent creature hits the wearer with a melee Strike and deals physical damage, or the wearer takes physical damage from a triggered mechanical hazard.
    • Frequency: Once per day.
    • Effect: The wrist lens flares with a brilliant silver-blue light and the acoustic roar of a snapping jaw-trap. The triggering creature (or adjacent hostile) must attempt a DC 18 basic Fortitude save:
      • Critical Success: The creature takes no damage.
      • Success: The creature takes force damage equal to half the damage dealt to the wearer.
      • Failure: The creature takes force damage equal to the full damage dealt to the wearer.
      • Critical Failure: As failure, and the creature is pushed 5 feet directly away from the wearer.
    • Arcane Resonance Hazard: If the triggering creature has an active reactive warding spell (such as fire shield or retributive strike), the collision destabilizes both wards. Both the wearer and the attacker take 2d8 sonic damage, and the bracer cannot be used again until repaired with a DC 18 Crafting check.
  • Sapper’s Disengagement Spring (Single Action):
    • Frequency: Once per 10 minutes.
    • Effect: The wearer makes an Athletics check to Shove an adjacent enemy using the bracer’s kinetic spring-pulse. On a success, the target is pushed back 5 feet; on a critical success, the target is pushed back 10 feet and falls prone.

Savage Worlds (Adventure Edition – SWADE)

Durna’s Tripwire Vambrace

  • Classification: Minor Arcane Device (Worn, Wrists/Forearms)
  • Min Strength: d4
  • Weight: 1.5 lbs
  • Cost: $1,200
  • Armor Bonus: Provides +1 Armor to the Arms, and reduces damage taken from collapsing debris, rockfalls, and mechanical area traps by 2.
  • Trap Sense: The wearer gains a +2 bonus to Notice and Repair rolls made to spot, analyze, or disarm mechanical triggers, tripwires, spring traps, and pressure plates.
  • Sympathetic Backlash:
    • Whenever the wearer is struck by an adjacent melee attack or triggered trap and suffers at least one Wound or Shaken result, the wrist lens immediately discharges.
    • The attacker (or nearest hostile in range) must make an instantaneous Agility roll at -2.
    • Failure: The target suffers the exact amount of raw damage (matching dice roll and total) delivered to the wearer.
    • Success: The target manages to dive partially clear and takes half damage.
    • Resonance Calamity: If the attacker is protected by the arcane protection, barrier, or deflection powers, a violent harmonic loop triggers. The device immediately suffers a Malfunction, extinguishing its enchantment, and generates a Medium Blast Template centered on the wearer that deals 2d6 damage to everyone within.
  • Sapper’s Shove:
    • The wearer may use the device to execute an unprovoked Push maneuver without incurring a multi-action penalty. On a success, the opponent is shoved back 1″ (2 yards); with a raise, the target is pushed back 2″ (4 yards) and knocked Distracted.

Shadowrun (Sixth World)

The Sapper’s Tripwire Vambrace

  • Item Classification: Foci / Arm Accessory (Forearm Mount)
  • Availability: 4 (R)
  • Cost: 8,500¥
  • Karma Binding Cost: 6 Karma
  • Defense Rating: +1 to Defense Rating against close-quarters attacks; grants the wearer the minor trait Shored Foundation (reduces incoming Physical damage from collapsing masonry, falling structural debris, and mechanical fragmentation traps by 2 points).
  • Sympathetic Spring-Shatter:
    • Whenever the wearer is struck by an opponent in Close combat or triggers a physical mechanical/explosive trap and takes Physical or Stun damage after the Damage Resistance test, the bracer releases a concussive shockwave resembling a massive iron bear-trap snapping shut.
    • The attacking opponent (or the nearest hostile target within a number of meters equal to the damage sustained) must immediately make a Damage Resistance test against an equal value of Physical damage matching the unresisted damage inflicted upon the wearer.
    • Resonance Hazard: If an affected adversary is shielded by an active barrier, defensive spell (such as Armor or Physical Barrier), or active kinetic dispersion cyberware, the interference causes an immediate harmonic rupture. Both the wearer and the target take 6P damage (AP -2) from the concussive burst, and the focus is deactivated until rebound during downtime.
  • Acoustic Trap Sense:
    • While exploring ruins, sewers, or subterranean facilities, the five copper acoustic feelers hum against mechanical tension. The wearer receives a +2 dice pool bonus to Perception and Engineering checks made to detect hidden mechanical triggers, pressure plates, tripwires, and structural deadfalls within 10 meters.
  • Sapper’s Disengagement Spring (Minor Action):
    • The user expends a Minor Action when making an Unarmed Combat attack to trigger the vambrace’s stored spring-burst.
    • If the attack connects, the target takes standard Unarmed damage, is pushed directly back 2 meters, and must pass an Athletics + Agility (2) test or fall prone.

Starfinder (Second Edition)

    • Frequency: Once per 10 minutes.
    • Effect: The wrist lens flares with brilliant silver-blue light and an acoustic crack like an iron jaw-trap. The triggering target (or nearest adjacent foe) must attempt a DC 18 basic Reflex save:
      • Critical Success: The target takes no damage.
      • Success: The target takes force damage equal to half the damage dealt to the wearer.
      • Failure: The target takes force damage equal to the full damage dealt to the wearer.
      • Critical Failure: As failure, plus the target is pushed 5 feet directly away from the wearer.
    • Energy Shield Resonance: If the striking opponent is shielded by an active kinetic barrier, personal force field, or defensive energy matrix, the feedback cascade causes both the target’s shield and this bracer to overload. Both creatures take 2d6 sonic damage, and the shield/bracer is rendered inactive for 1 minute.
  • Sapper’s Disengagement Spring (Single Action):
    • The wearer triggers the bracer’s pressurized spring-pulse to make an Athletics check to Shove an adjacent enemy. On a success, the target is pushed back 5 feet; on a critical success, the target is pushed back 10 feet and becomes off-guard until the start of its next turn.

Traveller (Mongoose Traveller 2nd Edition)

TL12 Acoustic Sapper Vambrace

  • Tech Level: 12
  • Mass: 0.75 kg

  • Power Requirements: Powered by a rechargeable micro-power cell (rated for 50 combat activations or 24 hours of acoustic scanning).
  • Subterranean Acoustic Sensors:
    • The five dorsal copper antennae act as micro-seismometers and acoustic strain-gauges. The wearer receives DM+1 to Recon and Electronics (sensors) checks made to detect mechanical tripwires, tension cords, concealed pit-fall triggers, and hollowed floor cavities within 10 meters.
  • Piezoelectric Spring Retribution:
    • Whenever the wearer is hit in close combat (Brawling or Melee) or injured by a mechanical trap and takes damage through armor, the wrist assembly discharges inverted kinetic energy outward.
    • The triggering adversary or nearest hostile target immediately takes concussive damage equal to the total points of damage that penetrated the wearer’s armor (the target’s armor protects against this reflected strike normally).
    • Resonance Calamity: If the opponent is equipped with an active personal deflector screen or TL13+ energy defense field, the harmonic overlap causes a catastrophic field surge. The unit’s micro-cell burns out, destroying the vambrace, and an explosive wave inflicts 3D6 damage to all targets within 2 meters.
  • Directional Disengagement Jet:
    • As a combat action, the user engages the wrist collar to discharge a directional shockwave against an adjacent opponent.
    • The user rolls Melee (unarmed) with DM+1. On a success, the target is driven back 3 meters and must pass an Athletics (dexterity) check of 8+ to avoid falling prone.
