Lore In a small, forgotten village nestled in the sprawling jungles of the Ayanga Isles, there lived an old avatar named Jin. He had arrived on Saṃsāra with fragmented memories of a monastic life on a world where the quiet cultivation of inner energy was a path to enlightenment. He found solace not in combat or grand magic, but in the simple, meditative act of preparing food. For decades, he practiced his gentle, flowing Qigong movements in his small kitchen, his hands moving with the same grace to chop vegetables as they did to trace patterns of energy in the air. His favorite tool was a cutting board carved from a single piece of rootwood. Every morning, he would perform his breathing exercises over it, and with every meal, he would channel his intent for nourishment and balance into the ingredients he prepared. Over sixty years, the simple board became saturated with his placid, life-affirming qi. It does not hold the power to sunder mountains or raise the dead, but it retains the essence of Jin’s life’s work: the belief that a well-prepared meal can balance the body, calm the mind, and soothe the spirit. After Jin’s final reincarnation, the board found its way into a trader’s cart, eventually circulating among the countless souls of the world as a humble, yet remarkably effective, culinary tool.
Description A rectangular cutting board, approximately one foot by two feet, made from a single, solid piece of dark, dense rootwood. The surface is exceptionally smooth to the touch, worn down by countless cuts and years of use, yet it bears no deep gashes or splinters. The grain of the wood swirls in calming, flowing patterns. When held, the board emits a faint, almost imperceptible warmth and a subtle, rhythmic pulse of energy, like a slow and steady heartbeat. It carries a lingering, clean scent reminiscent of fresh ginger and calming tea. The knife marks on its surface seem to follow a harmonious pattern, evidence of a previous owner whose movements were full of focus and grace.

Detailed Stats
- Durability: 50/50
- Weight: 2 lbs
- Subtle Nourishment: A meal prepared with ingredients chopped on this board grants the consumer +1 Vitality for 1 hour. This effect does not stack with itself.
- Kitchen Aptitude: Provides a +2 bonus to Culinary skill checks related to the preparation of ingredients (chopping, dicing, mincing).
Passive Magics
- Qi-Flow Preparation: The board naturally infuses the ingredients prepared upon it with a gentle, flowing qi. This process makes the food easier for the body to absorb, subtly enhancing its nourishing qualities. Raw ingredients placed on the board will resist spoilage and decay for an additional 24 hours.
- The Calm Hand: The rhythmic energy of the board extends to its user. While actively using the cutting board to prepare a meal, the avatar gains a focused calm, granting them immunity to minor startling effects or distractions that are not directly physically harmful. This helps maintain a steady hand for delicate knife work.
Activable Magics
- Breath of Flavor: The avatar can focus on a single, raw ingredient placed in the center of the board and perform a slow, deliberate breathing exercise for one minute, exhaling gently onto the item. The avatar’s qi is channeled through the board and into the ingredient, unlocking its absolute peak flavor profile. A bland fruit becomes perfectly sweet, a tough vegetable becomes crisp and flavorful. This can be used on one core ingredient per meal.
- Harmonious Infusion: By entering a brief meditative state while methodically chopping ingredients for a full five minutes, the user can consciously channel their vital energy into the food. The resulting meal becomes harmonized against internal discord. The first person to consume a full portion of this meal is cured of any ongoing indigestion or one minor, non-magical poison affecting their system. This magic can be activated once between periods of long rest.

In the sprawling, high-magic world of Saṃsāra, an item like the Qigong 7 of the Harmonious Cutting Board would not be found in a single, standardized type of shop. Its value and the manner of its sale would depend entirely on the seller’s awareness of its subtle, roleplay-focused magic. As a “Common” rarity item, it circulates widely, passing through many hands and turning up in a variety of commercial settings across the 73 island countries.
Here are several types of shops where the cutting board might be found, and how the transaction would likely occur in each.
1. The Overlooked Treasure: A Cluttered General Store or Pawn Shop
The Shop: This kind of establishment can be found in any sizable town or city district, often on a side street away from the main thoroughfares. The air inside is thick with the scent of dust, old wood, and oiled metal. Shelves are crammed with a miscellany of mundane goods: used tools, sturdy but plain household items, old lanterns, coils of rope, and mismatched sets of dishes. The Harmonious Cutting Board would likely be found in a stack of other kitchen implements, its gentle warmth and magical nature completely overlooked.
How It’s Sold: The proprietor is a pragmatic merchant, more concerned with moving inventory than appraising the esoteric qualities of their wares. They lack a finely-tuned “Mind’s Eye” or simply don’t bother to scrutinize every cheap item that comes across their counter. To them, it is merely a high-quality, durable cutting board. They would point out its solid construction and smooth surface, selling it based on its physical merits alone. The transaction is swift, with no mention of qi, harmony, or magic. This is where a perceptive avatar can find an incredible bargain.
Cost: 8 to 15 Silver Pieces. The price is based solely on its value as a well-made, non-magical kitchen tool.
2. The Specialist’s Offering: An Elite Culinary Supplier
The Shop: Located in the affluent heart of a metropolis, perhaps one of the large floating cities or a trade hub skyscraper, this shop is the antithesis of the pawn shop. It is impeccably clean, organized, and smells of exotic spices and sharpening stones. Gleaming copper pots, perfectly balanced knives, and other high-end culinary gear are displayed with the care of a jewelry store. The clientele consists of master chefs, wealthy gourmands, and the stewards of noble houses.
How It’s Sold: The owner is likely a retired master chef, an avatar with a deep appreciation for the art of cooking and a “Mind’s Eye” sharp enough to detect the subtle Qigong magic within the board. They would know its true worth. The item would be presented on a soft velvet cloth, separate from mundane equipment. The proprietor would describe its properties with reverence, explaining how it “calms the hand,” “prevents discord in the ingredients,” and allows a chef to “infuse their intent” into their creations. The sale is a formal consultation, and the price is firm, reflecting its unique utility to a serious practitioner of the culinary arts.
Cost: 2 to 3 Gold Pieces. The price is not for the wood, but for the consistent, subtle magical advantage it provides in a high-stakes kitchen.
3. The Esoteric Find: A Curio and Tea Shop
The Shop: Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, possibly near a park or a small temple, this shop focuses on items for health, meditation, and mindful living. The air inside is scented with incense, drying herbs, and the steam from a constantly simmering kettle of tea. Wind chimes provide a gentle soundtrack. The shelves hold meditation cushions, herbal remedies, calligraphed scrolls, and other minor magical curiosities that promote tranquility and balance.
How It’s Sold: The proprietor is a serene individual, perhaps a follower of a spiritual path that emphasizes inner peace. They are highly attuned to the flow of qi and vital energies. They would market the Harmonious Cutting Board not as a kitchen tool, but as an aid for achieving a meditative state through the practice of daily chores. They would speak of its ability to create “nourishment for the soul as well as the body.” The transaction would be a quiet, unhurried conversation, and the proprietor might be more interested in finding a “worthy home” for the item than in maximizing profit.
Cost: Approximately 75 Silver Pieces. Alternatively, the proprietor might be open to a trade for other items of similar harmonious or spiritual value, such as rare meditative herbs, a hand-copied philosophical text, or a blessed set of wind chimes.
4. The Market Hustle: A Stall in a Grand Bazaar
The Shop: In the chaotic, sprawling open-air market of a major port city, surrounded by the shouts of vendors and the smells of a thousand different foods and goods, sits a small stall crammed with magical oddities. The proprietor is a fast-talking trader with a keen eye for both magical auras and wealthy-looking customers. Their stall is a mix of genuine minor magical items, cleverly crafted fakes, and mundane items with exaggerated stories.
How It’s Sold: The trader’s “Mind’s Eye” is good enough to know the cutting board is magical, but they might not understand the specifics of its Qigong nature. They will invent a grand history for it, claiming it was once owned by a legendary chef to the gods or that it was carved from the heartwood of a sacred tree. Haggling is not just expected; it is a required part of the dance. The trader will start with an outrageously high price, pointing to the board’s “faint, life-giving glow” and demonstrating its “unusual warmth.” A savvy avatar must use their own perception and bargaining skills to get to a reasonable price.
Cost: The initial asking price could be as high as 4 Gold Pieces. A skilled and persistent haggler, however, could likely talk the trader down to around 90 Silver Pieces or 1 Gold Piece, especially towards the end of the market day.
In the world of Saṃsāra, the Qigong 7 of the Harmonious Cutting Board is fundamentally a tool of peace and creation, not of conflict. An avatar carrying it would be at a significant disadvantage in a direct confrontation. However, for a clever or desperate individual, its unique magical properties can be applied in unconventional ways for both defense and offense. The key is to leverage its Qigong-based magic, which revolves around focus, breath, harmony, and the manipulation of vital energy in subtle forms. The roleplay of its use in combat is not about turning it into a weapon, but about using it as a catalyst to interact with the environment and the user’s own inner state.
Scenario 1: A Back-Alley Ambush in a Bustling Metropolis
An avatar, a young chef’s apprentice, is returning to their lodgings late at night, carrying a satchel with their tools of the trade, including the Harmonious Cutting Board. As they cut through a narrow alley filled with refuse and discarded crates, two street toughs step out from the shadows, blocking the path and brandishing sharpened daggers.
Roleplaying Defense:
The initial instinct is survival. As one of the thugs lunges, the avatar yanks the cutting board from their satchel, holding it with two hands like a small, desperate shield. The roleplay would focus on the avatar’s senses and internal state. They feel the familiar, faint warmth of the board pulse against their palms. As the dagger clangs against the dense rootwood, the avatar feels the Calm Hand passive magic activate. The jarring shock of the impact is lessened, and the surge of panic is suppressed by a wave of unnatural focus, allowing them to hold the block steady instead of recoiling in fear. The wood groans, and a splinter might fly, but the board holds. They are not a warrior, but the board’s energy allows them to maintain a defender’s mindset, focusing on parrying and survival rather than succumbing to terror. They would continue to use it to deflect clumsy swings, its smooth, qi-infused surface causing blades to slide off at awkward angles.
Roleplaying Offense:
The avatar knows they cannot win a direct fight. Hitting the thugs with a 2-pound board would be laughably ineffective. Instead, they must create an opportunity to escape. Their eyes dart around the filthy alley and land on a pile of refuse containing rotting fish heads and spoiled vegetables. An idea, born of desperation and knowledge of their tool, sparks.
While keeping the board up defensively with one hand, the avatar reaches down with the other and snatches a particularly foul-looking, mushy vegetable from the pile. Holding it against the board, they enact the Breath of Flavor active magic. They take a quick, sharp, focused breath, but instead of channeling an intent to unlock a pleasant taste, they focus all their disgust and desire for the thugs to leave into the breath. They are not enhancing the vegetable’s flavor; they are magnifying its rottenness, turning its foul qi into a concentrated, weaponized stench. The vegetable visibly darkens and seems to sag under the amplified foulness.
The “offensive” act is to then fling this magically enhanced garbage at the face of the nearest attacker. The impact is negligible, but the effect is overwhelming. The thug is hit with a smell so potent, so supernaturally awful, that their eyes water, they begin to gag uncontrollably, and they stumble back, completely disoriented. This creates the opening needed for the avatar to bolt past them and escape into the crowded main street. The offense wasn’t dealing damage, but manipulating the environment in a way that incapacitates through sensory overload.
Scenario 2: A Confrontation in the Wilds
An avatar with culinary skills is foraging in a dense, jungle-like part of one of the 73 islands. They are searching for a rare, sweet-tasting fungus that grows on the bark of ancient trees. As they reach for a specimen, they disturb a nest of Venom-Spitter Toads, small, aggressive amphibians that fire darts of a mild paralytic poison from their mouths.
Roleplaying Defense:
The avatar is hit in the leg by one of the toxic darts. They feel a numbing coldness begin to spread up their calf, their muscles starting to stiffen. They know they have only minutes before they are immobilized. Retreat is difficult with a rapidly numbing leg. They drop their basket and pull out the Harmonious Cutting Board.
They frantically scan their surroundings, grab a handful of common, edible moss from a nearby rock, and slap it onto the board. They begin chopping it roughly, not with any culinary grace, but with urgency. This is the roleplay of the Harmonious Infusion active magic. Amidst the chaos of the hissing toads and incoming darts, the avatar must force themselves into a “brief meditative state,” channeling their will to live and their body’s energy into the act of chopping. They focus on the concept of “balance” and “purity” to counteract the “discord” of the poison. After a few moments, the moss paste seems to carry the board’s gentle warmth. The avatar scoops up a gob of the enchanted moss and slathers it onto the wound, while also eating a small amount. The roleplay would describe the creeping paralysis halting its advance, then slowly, painfully receding as the harmonized qi in the moss neutralizes the minor paralytic agent, allowing the avatar to regain mobility.
Roleplaying Offense:
The toads are still a threat. The avatar needs to drive them away. They notice that the toads are territorial and highly attracted to sudden, sweet scents, which they mistake for their preferred prey, sugary nectar-flies. The avatar pulls a few of the sweet fungi they just collected and places them on the board.
They perform the Breath of Flavor technique, channeling a pure, intense sweetness into the fungi. The air around the board shimmers for a moment, and an almost overpowering aroma of honeyed nectar erupts, far stronger than the fungi should naturally produce. The “offensive” action is to then hurl these magically-sweetened fungi deep into the territory of a much larger and more aggressive creature they had noted earlier—a sleeping, boar-like creature known as a Snout-Tusker.
The Venom-Spitter Toads, their tiny brains overwhelmed by the irresistible scent, immediately abandon their attack on the avatar. They swarm towards the source of the smell, hopping directly into the resting place of the Snout-Tusker. The sudden intrusion of dozens of small creatures awakens the large beast, which rises with an enraged roar and begins to thrash about, chasing off the now-panicked toads. The avatar used the board not to fight the toads, but to use their instincts against them, creating a conflict between two other parties that allowed for a safe retreat.

Perception of Activation:
User’s Perspective
When an avatar activates the Harmonious Cutting Board, specifically using the Harmonious Infusion magic, the experience is intensely internal and focused. The world outside the immediate task of preparation seems to recede, and the senses attune to the flow of qi.
- Sight: The avatar’s peripheral vision softens and blurs, creating a tunnel-vision effect focused entirely on the board and their hands. The swirling grain of the dark rootwood appears to gain depth, with the patterns seeming to flow slowly, like thick, dark water. The ingredient being chopped takes on a subtle, internal luminance, a soft glow that seems to emanate from within it rather than being cast upon it. The rhythmic rise and fall of the knife becomes the primary visual anchor in a world that has otherwise faded in significance.
- Sound: The sharp, percussive sounds of the knife striking the board lose their edge, blending into a single, resonant, and continuous hum. This sound is felt as much as it is heard, vibrating through the user’s hands and arms. It becomes a meditative mantra, a steady thrum-thrum-thrum that drowns out all other ambient noise. A distant shout or a clattering pot from across the room becomes a muffled, unimportant echo.
- Touch: This is the most profound physical sensation. A deep, penetrating warmth blooms from the cutting board, flowing into the user’s palms. It is not a burning heat, but a feeling of vibrant, living energy, like holding one’s hands over a dormant hearth that is still full of life. The texture of the knife handle feels perfectly molded to their grip, becoming a seamless extension of their arm. The resistance of the food being chopped provides a satisfying, tactile feedback that communicates its texture and density perfectly.
- Smell: The aroma of the ingredient being prepared becomes hyper-focused and incredibly pure. If chopping a simple carrot, the user smells not just “carrot,” but the deep earth it grew in, the fresh water that nourished it, and its own crisp, sweet life. The board’s own subtle scent of ginger and calming tea intensifies, mingling with the scent of the food to create a holistic, grounding aroma that fills the user’s senses.
- Taste: A faint, clean taste often manifests on the user’s tongue, akin to fresh spring water or the crispness of the air after a thunderstorm. It is the taste of pure, flowing qi, a subtle but distinct side effect of channeling their own vital energy through the magical medium of the board.
- Extra-Sensory Perception (Mind’s Eye): The user feels their own vital energy being drawn from their core, flowing down their arms, and suffusing their hands. As they chop, they perceive this energy being channeled by their intent through the knife and into the cutting board. The board acts as a lens and a filter; they can feel it accept their raw qi, calm it, and then infuse it rhythmically into the ingredients with every fall of the blade. Through their Mind’s Eye, they see the chaotic, tangled energy signature of the raw food being gently untangled, smoothed, and woven into a harmonious, orderly pattern.
- Positives: The user experiences a profound sense of focus, peace, and control. The meditative state eliminates distractions and anxieties, creating a feeling of being perfectly present in the moment. There is a deep satisfaction in the feeling of creating not just food, but a source of true, balanced nourishment.
- Negatives: The intense tunnel vision and muffling of external sounds leaves the user almost completely unaware of their immediate surroundings. They are exceptionally vulnerable to being surprised. Following the activation, there is often a feeling of slight energy drain or light-headedness, proportional to the effort exerted.
Observer’s Perspective
For an outside observer, the activation is subtle. An ordinary person might not notice anything other than a cook working with unusual concentration. However, a perceptive or magically-attuned individual will notice distinct signs that something more is occurring.
- Sight: To the casual glance, the user simply appears focused. A more attentive observer might notice that their movements are unnaturally fluid and rhythmic, without any wasted motion. A magically-attuned observer using their Mind’s Eye would see a faint, soft-green or pale-white aura flicker around the user’s hands and the board itself. This light is not bright enough to illuminate the room but is visible as a gentle, shimmering luminescence that seems to be absorbed by the food on the board. The air directly above the board may appear to waver slightly, like a heat haze on a cold day.
- Sound: The most noticeable sign for an ordinary observer is the sound. The chopping is unnaturally consistent in its rhythm and volume, creating a steady, soothing cadence that is very different from the typical, varied sounds of kitchen work. It has a hypnotic quality that can draw one’s attention.
- Touch: An observer would not be touching the item. However, if they were to stand very close, a magically sensitive person might feel a gentle pressure or a tingling static field in the air around the user, a soft “push” of displaced energy.
- Smell: The aroma of the food being prepared is noticeably more potent and appealing than it should be. The fresh, clean scent seems to carry further, and even someone standing across the room might notice the remarkably pure fragrance of whatever is being chopped.
- Taste: This sense is not applicable to the observer during the activation itself.
- Extra-Sensory Perception (Mind’s Eye): An observer with magical sight would witness a clear flow of energy. They would see the user’s personal qi, a colored light unique to them, flowing from their torso into their arms. The cutting board itself would glow with its own placid, stable energy. They would see the user’s energy enter the board, where its “color” is smoothed and brightened, before being systematically pulsed into the food with each strike of the knife. They could literally see the energetic state of the food being transformed from a raw, chaotic state into a structured, harmonious one.
- Positives: The sight and sound of the activation can be calming and impressive to watch, a clear display of masterful focus. The resulting aromas are pleasant and inviting. For an ally, it is reassuring to see a companion preparing a beneficial, restorative meal.
- Negatives: The user is completely absorbed and unresponsive during the process. Attempts to speak to them or get their attention will fail, which can be unnerving or frustrating. For a hostile observer, this state of total absorption presents a clear and obvious moment of vulnerability to attack.
Recipe: The Board of Tranquil Preparation
This recipe outlines the process for creating a cutting board imbued with the principles of Qigong, designed to bring harmony and vital energy to the culinary arts. The process is as much a meditative ritual as it is a feat of craftsmanship, requiring the artisan to channel their own inner balance into the wood itself.
Materials Needed:
- One Solid Block of Old-Growth Heartwood: The wood must be at least one foot by two feet and several inches thick. Ironwood, Aged Riverwood, or a similarly dense, non-porous hardwood is required. The block must be a single, pure piece, completely free of knots, cracks, or blemishes, as such imperfections would disrupt the flow of qi.
- Three Smooth River Stones: These must be chosen by the crafter from a running river. The selection is a personal process of finding stones that feel naturally calming and balanced to the touch. Their color is irrelevant, but their texture and energetic “feel” are paramount.
- One Vial of Refined Vitality Oil: This alchemical concoction is created by rendering down herbs known for their life-giving properties (such as Sun-Kissed Ginseng or Mountain Bloom) in a base of pure, cold-pressed nut oil.
- A Handful of Fine Silver Dust: Acts as a conduit for qi and helps to stabilize the magical matrix within the wood.
- A Bolt of Natural Silk Cloth: For the final polishing and attunement.
Tools Required:
- Masterwork Woodworking Tools: This includes an exceptionally sharp hand plane, a set of fine-toothed saws, various woodworking chisels, and sanding blocks of graded fineness. Steam-powered saws may be used for the initial rough cuts, but all finishing work must be done by hand.
- An Alchemical Mortar and Pestle: Must be made of a non-reactive material, such as marble or porcelain, to grind the river stones without contaminating their energy.
- A Sturdy Woodworking Bench: To hold the piece steady during the delicate shaping process.
- Small Alchemical Crucible and Heat Source: For the careful preparation of the infusion paste.
Skill Requirements:
- Woodworking (Adept Rank): The crafter must possess a high degree of skill in shaping and finishing dense woods. The ability to create perfectly flat surfaces and seamless joins by hand is essential.
- Qigong (Practitioner Level): The crafter must have an active Qigong practice. They must be able to not only cultivate their own qi but consciously channel it from their body into an external object through focused intent and breath control.
- Alchemy or Herbalism (Journeyman Rank): The ability to identify and properly prepare life-aspected herbs and alchemical reagents is necessary to create the Refined Vitality Oil and the final infusion paste.
Crafting Steps:
Step 1: The Initial Attunement The process begins before the first cut is made. The crafter must spend at least one hour in quiet meditation with the raw materials. They will place the block of heartwood on their bench and arrange the three river stones upon it. By resting their hands over the materials and practicing slow, rhythmic breathing, they begin to attune their own energy to that of the wood and stone, forming a preliminary bond and sensing the unique character of the piece.
Step 2: The Mindful Shaping Using hand tools, the crafter begins to shape the board. This is the longest and most physically demanding step. Every push of the plane, every cut of the saw, must be deliberate and mindful. The crafter must maintain a state of focused calm, allowing their own tranquil energy to flow through the tools and into the wood. Haste or frustration will introduce discordant energy into the piece, ruining the final product. During this process, the crafter uses their “Mind’s Eye” to watch the flow of qi within the wood, ensuring their work follows the natural grain and energy lines of the material. This stage alone can take several days of patient work.
Step 3: Creating the Heart-Focus Once the board is shaped and sanded to a near-perfect smoothness, it is turned over. The crafter must carefully carve three small, shallow recesses into the underside of the board, arranged in a stable triangle. These recesses will serve as the “heart” of the board, a focus point for its innate magical energy.
Step 4: The Infusion Paste The crafter now moves to the alchemical tools. The three river stones are placed in the mortar and painstakingly ground into a fine powder. This powder is then gently heated in the crucible with the Refined Vitality Oil and the Fine Silver Dust, stirring until it forms a thick, shimmering, and warm paste. During this process, the crafter must continue to focus their intent for nourishment and harmony into the mixture.
Step 5: Sealing the Heart The warm infusion paste is carefully spooned into the three recesses on the underside of the board. The crafter then carves three perfectly fitting plugs from the leftover scraps of the same heartwood block. Each plug is fitted into a recess, sealing the magical heart within the body of the board. This must be done with such precision that the seams are nearly invisible.
Step 6: The Final Awakening The board is now physically complete but magically dormant. The crafter takes the bolt of silk cloth and uses it to apply a thin coat of the remaining Refined Vitality Oil over every surface of the board, polishing the wood until it radiates a soft, deep luster.
Finally, the true imbuement begins. The crafter must place the finished board in a quiet, isolated space. For one full day-night cycle, they must remain with the board, entering a deep Qigong meditative state. With hands placed gently on the board’s surface, they continuously channel their own vital energy into it. They will use their breath to draw in worldly qi and their focus to exhale it into the board, awakening the sealed heart and suffusing the entire piece with life-affirming energy. A successful imbuement is complete when the crafter can perceive, through their Mind’s Eye, a steady, rhythmic pulse of tranquil energy emanating from the board, even when they are no longer touching it.
Old Man and His Food-Table of Wood
And it was told, from a telling that was already old, that a man appeared. He did not come on a ship with sails of wind, nor on a great flying beast. He came from no place that is a place. One sun, the dirt was empty. The next sun, the man was on the dirt, and the pictures in his head were broken. He had a name, and his name was Jin. This was on an island of green things, a land of wet air and many loud bugs.
The people of the village found him. They saw his hands were empty of weapons and his eyes were not full of the desire for bright coins. So they did not fight him. They gave him water, and he drank. They gave him a space to sleep, and he slept. The man Jin did not speak of the broken pictures in his head. He was a quiet man. His heart was quiet.
While other avatars made loud noises in the forges, making gears of steam and swords of shine, Jin did a small work. His work was food. In the village, this was a small thing. Food was for the stomach, to stop the noise of hunger. But for Jin, the making of food was a great thing. It was his way.
And so, he went to the great green forest. He walked for many suns. He was looking. He touched many trees. He put his ear to the wood. The people thought this was strange. He was not looking for wood to burn for heat. He was not looking for wood to build a big house. He found a root of a great tree that had fallen long ago. The root was dark like wet earth after a rain. It was heavy like a true stone. He cut a piece from it. It was a great work. His arms were tired, but his heart was not tired. He carried the dark wood back to the village.
Then he made the food-table of wood. He did not use the fast-screaming saws of the steam-works. He used a small sharp metal in his hand. He pushed the metal. For many suns, he pushed the metal and the wood became flat. He pushed the metal, and the wood became smooth. His work was slow, like a cloud moving in the sky. It was a slow dance of hand and wood. When he was done, the food-table was simple and dark and true.
And this is the way of the man Jin. Every sun, when the sky was new and gray, he would stand before his food-table of wood. He would not eat. He would not cut. He would stand, and he would do the practice of breath. He moved his arms slow, like the seaweed in the deep water. He breathed in the air of the world. He breathed out his own quiet. And he breathed his quiet onto the wood. His hands, warm with his own inner energy, would rest on the wood. He put his inner warmth into the wood. He did this when he was young. He did this when his hair had the color of snow. For sixty turnings of the seasons, he gave his breath and his warmth to the food-table of wood.
And the wood changed. At first, it was just wood. Then, it became warm wood. It was always a little warm, like a stone that sat in the sun all day. When he cut the food upon it, a strange thing happened. The food stopped its journey to rot. An apple cut on the wood would stay fresh for two suns. The hard root of a ground-plant, when cut on the wood, became soft for the tooth. The sour berry, when it rested on the wood, became sweet.
The people of the village saw this. At first, they did not understand. They ate the food of Jin. A child with a storm in his stomach ate the rice from Jin’s food-table, and the storm in his stomach became quiet. A merchant, his head full of the noise of numbers and worry, ate the fish from Jin’s food-table, and the noise in his head became quiet. A soldier, his arm hurt from a foolish fight, ate the bread from Jin’s food-table, and he said the pain was a smaller thing. The food from the warm wood did not give great magic. It did not heal a broken leg or make a man fly. It gave a small magic. It gave balance. It made the inside of a person quiet and strong.
And the man Jin became old. His skin became a map of his suns. His breath became shallow. One night, he lay down and his breath left his body to find a new body, as is the way of Saṃsāra. He left nothing behind. No coins of gold. No sword of shine. Only his quiet memory and the food-table of wood.
A person from the village cleaned his small house. They saw the food-table. They felt its warmth. They thought, this is a good wood, very strong. They did not know the story of the sixty seasons of breath. They did not see the quiet energy with the eye inside their head. They sold the food-table of wood to a traveling trader for a few coins to pay for a new roof. And so, the warm wood began its long journey, carrying the quiet heart of the man who came from no place.
The moral of the story is: A small work, done with great love every day, can create a magic more true than a great work done with no love at all.

The Monk’s Nourishing Board
This appears to be a simple, dark wood cutting board, though it feels unusually warm and solid. It was brought to the West from China in the late 19th century by a missionary who took an interest in local folk medicine and spiritual practices. Its history prior to that is unknown, documented only in a poorly translated text that speaks of a monk who imbued the board with his life-force, or “qi,” over sixty years of daily meditation. The item is not magical in the Mythos sense; it contains no alien intelligence and draws on no dark powers. Instead, it is a focal point of immense human discipline and harmonized vital energy.
Game Mechanics:
The board’s effects are subtle and require time to manifest. They are centered on restoring the body and mind from the rigors of investigation, not on direct confrontation.
- Restorative Meal: Preparing a meal using the board requires one hour of uninterrupted work and a successful Know or Occult roll to understand the principles of balance and harmony. Those who partake in the meal may make a Luck roll. If successful, they recover 1 additional Hit Point. If the Luck roll is failed, the meal is nourishing but provides no special benefit. If the initial Know or Occult roll was a Fumble, the food is tainted by the cook’s stressed psyche, causing anyone who eats it to lose 1 Sanity point.
- Mindful Preparation: An Investigator who spends a full day resting and preparing all their own meals using the board can attempt to recenter their mind. At the end of the day, the Investigator may make a POW x3 roll. If successful, they recover 1d3 Sanity points. This can only be attempted once per week.
- Purifying Infusion: By focusing all of one’s will, an Investigator can attempt to use the board to neutralize a mundane toxin. The cook must spend 10 minutes frantically chopping a suitable absorbent food (like bread or a starchy root) while making a Hard POW roll. If successful, consuming the prepared food allows the afflicted person to immediately make another CON roll to shake off the effects of a non-Mythos poison, even if they have previously failed one. Using the board in this way is draining and costs the cook 1d4 Magic Points and 1 HP.
Blades in the Dark
The Serenity Plank (Fine, Special)
A thick, dark plank of unfamiliar wood, worn smooth from years of use. It feels warm and steady in your hands. It originated somewhere in the Dagger Isles, supposedly crafted by a recluse who practiced ancient focusing techniques. Your crew’s cook swears by it, claiming it helps them keep a clear head when the heat is on. It’s a tool for preparation, for centering the crew before the chaos of a score.
Game Mechanics:
The Serenity Plank is a piece of special gear that grants advantages during downtime and preparation, helping the crew manage Stress and Harm.
- You can use the Serenity Plank when you indulge your vice. If you consume a carefully prepared meal as part of your overindulgence, you may take +1d to your roll to clear Stress.
- During a downtime activity, your crew’s cook can prepare a Harmonizing Meal. This is a special downtime action that costs 1 Coin for ingredients. Anyone in the crew who partakes can choose one of the following benefits:
- Clear an additional 1 Stress.
- If you are suffering from Level 1 Harm (“Battered,” “Exhausted,” etc.), a Harmonizing Meal allows you to remove it as if you had received treatment.
- Start a long-term project clock (e.g., “Researching a Rival” or “Crafting a New Gadget”) with two ticks already marked instead of one, due to your enhanced focus.
- When you bring it on a score, you can mark the gear box to produce a small, perfectly prepared snack. Consuming it allows you to ignore the effects of a single mental consequence (e.g., Confused, Frightened, Hesitant) for one scene.
Dungeons & Dragons
Board of Serene Preparation Wondrous Item, Uncommon
This dark rootwood cutting board feels pleasantly warm to the touch. The countless knife marks upon its surface seem to form a flowing, harmonious pattern. The board has 3 charges and regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn.
When you use this board as part of your Cook’s Utensils to prepare a meal, you are considered proficient with those tools and add double your proficiency bonus to the check, instead of your normal proficiency bonus.
Nourishing Meal. When a creature eats a meal prepared by you using this board over the course of a short or long rest, that creature gains 1d4 temporary hit points.
Harmonious Infusion. When you prepare a meal, you can expend 1 charge to imbue it with balancing energy. A creature that consumes the meal gains advantage on saving throws against being poisoned or diseased for the next 8 hours. The food also counts as the equivalent of one day’s rations.
Breath of Tranquility. As an action, you can expend 2 charges and touch the board to a single willing creature. The target is infused with calming energy and has advantage on its next Wisdom saving throw made within the next minute.
Knave
Qi-Infused Cutting Board Bulky Item, Takes 2 Slots, Quality 1d6
A heavy slab of dark, oiled wood that is always warm. It’s covered in the fine, rhythmic cuts of a master’s knife. The Quality die represents its internal energy. When it is reduced to 0, the board becomes a mundane item until its energy can be restored by a Qigong master over a month of meditation.
- Steady Hand: When you use this board to prepare a meal, you have advantage on any ability tests made to cook or handle delicate ingredients.
- Nourishing Food: If you eat a meal prepared on this board, you heal an additional 1 HP when you rest.
- Activate: You can spend your entire turn in a meditative state, chopping and breathing over a piece of food to infuse it. At the end of your turn, roll the board’s Quality die. If the roll is greater than the number of allies you are trying to feed (including yourself), the food is successfully infused. Anyone who eats it is cured of a single non-magical disease or the effects of a mundane poison. After using this feature, roll the board’s Quality die again; on a 1-2, its Quality is reduced by one step (d6 to d4, d4 to 0).
Fate
The Board of the Quiet Heart
This is an Extra, representing a unique item of personal significance. It is a simple, dark wooden cutting board, but its importance comes from the focus and intention it represents.
- Aspect: Imbued with Centered Intention This aspect can be invoked to grant a bonus when performing tasks that require patience, focus, and a calm demeanor, especially but not exclusively related to preparing food. A character could invoke this for a +2 bonus on an Overcome roll using Craft or Empathy to prepare a meal that calms a tense diplomatic situation. A GM could compel this aspect by having the user become so absorbed in their mindful preparations that they fail to notice an approaching threat, earning the player a Fate Point.
- Stunt: The Nourishing Meal Once per session, when you take the time to prepare a meal for your group using the board, you can grant one character who partakes a temporary situation aspect, such as Stomach Full of Courage or Ready for Anything. This aspect has one free invocation.
- Stunt: Restorative Broth When a character is suffering from a Mild physical consequence (like Battered and Bruised or Exhausted), you can spend a significant amount of time preparing a special restorative meal for them. When you Create an Advantage to aid their recovery, you get an additional free invocation on the Perfectly Prepared Broth aspect you create.
Numenera & Cypher System
Alimental Preparation Surface
An artifact from a prior world that appears to be a simple cutting board made of a dark, semi-organic material that is warm to the touch. Nanites within the surface analyze the biological and molecular structure of any organic material placed upon it and, when activated by the user’s focused bio-kinetics, can realign those structures to be more orderly and beneficial for consumption.
- Level: 4
- Form: A rectangular plank of a dark, self-repairing organic polymer.
- Effect: A character who spends their ten-minute recovery roll preparing and eating food from this surface recovers an additional 2 points to their Might or Speed Pool (character’s choice).
- Effect (Active): The user can attempt to create a powerful antitoxin. This is an Intellect-based task hindered by the artifact’s level (difficulty 4) that takes one hour. On success, the prepared food can be consumed by one person to counteract a single mundane poison or disease with a level equal to or less than the artifact’s level.
- Depletion: 1 in 1d20. (Whenever a character uses the artifact for either of its effects, roll a d20. On a 1, the nanites cease to function, and the board becomes inert.)

Savage Worlds
The Steady Hand Board
This is a masterwork culinary tool, a thick slab of dark wood from the exotic lands of the far east. It is said that the monks who practice ancient martial arts also practice the art of cooking, believing that a balanced body begins with balanced food. This board is a testament to that philosophy.
- Steady Hands: A character using this board gains a +1 bonus to all Cooking rolls. Furthermore, the calming energy of the board makes the user focused and resolute; they are immune to being Shaken by Taunt or Intimidation Tests.
- Nourishing Meal: A meal prepared on the board is exceptionally healthy. Anyone who partakes heals from the Shaken condition automatically and recovers from Fatigue one hour faster than normal.
- Purifying Infusion (Active): Once per day, the cook can spend 30 minutes preparing a Purifying Meal for up to their group size. Anyone who eats the meal immediately gets a free Vigor roll to overcome any one mundane poison or disease currently affecting them. This roll is made at +2.
Shadowrun
Adept’s Nourishing Block (Qi Focus, Force 2)
This appears to be a thick, antique cutting board made from a single piece of dark, polished wood. To the magically active, it radiates a powerful aura of life, health, and harmony. It is a type of Qi focus, believed to have been created by a wuxing master chef or an adept following the Speaker’s Way. It channels and refines the user’s own life energy, or qi, into the food prepared upon it, turning a simple meal into a potent restorative aid. It must be bonded by an adept to unlock its full potential.
Game Mechanics:
- Bonding: An adept must bond the focus, which costs 4 Karma. Once bonded, it is attuned to their specific qi.
- Availability: 8R
- Cost: 12,000¥
- Restorative Meal: When the bonded adept takes at least 30 minutes to prepare a meal using the block, they make a Cooking + Logic [Social] test. The number of net hits determines the meal’s potency. The adept and up to five other individuals who eat the meal gain the benefits.
- 1 Net Hit: Participants recover Stun damage as if they had rested for twice as long (e.g., 2 points per 30 minutes instead of per hour).
- 3 Net Hits: In addition to the above, participants gain +2 dice on their next test to resist a pathogen or toxin.
- 5 Net Hits: In addition to the above, participants heal 1 box of Physical damage.
- Tranquil Preparation: The adept who is bonded to the focus may use it as a meditative tool. When spending an hour in quiet contemplation and preparation, they can resist the effects of stress and mental fatigue, gaining 1 point of temporary Edge that must be used before their next rest period.
Starfinder
Restorative Galley-Board Level 3; Price 1,450; Bulk 1
This cutting board is fashioned from a dark, bio-engineered polymer that gently pulses with a soft inner light. Developed by Xenodruids of Castrovel, the board is threaded with synthetic capillaries that channel positive energy, analyzing and purifying organic matter placed upon it. It is a popular, if expensive, piece of equipment for ship galleys on long-haul expeditions, valued for its ability to improve morale and physical wellbeing.
System: Hybrid Item Effect: When you use this board to prepare a meal for yourself and your allies (requiring at least 10 minutes of work), you can grant all creatures who partake a number of temporary Hit Points equal to the board’s item level. These temporary Hit Points last for 4 hours.
In addition, a meal prepared on the board can be infused with stronger restorative properties. A creature eating the meal can immediately attempt a new saving throw, with a +2 circumstance bonus, against one ongoing disease or poison effect currently affecting them. This benefit can be gained by a creature only once per day.
Traveller
Auto-Chef Med-Prep Surface (TL-13)
At first glance, this is a high-quality, durable cutting surface made of a black, non-porous composite, suitable for a starship or high-end habitat galley. Embedded within the composite is a sophisticated suite of technologies. Micro-sensors analyze the molecular composition of any food placed upon it, while ultrasonic emitters and a low-level nutrient synthesizer work to denature common toxins and optimize the food for digestion and health. It is not a replacement for a full medbay, but it is an invaluable tool for maintaining crew health on long voyages far from port.
- Mass: 2 kg
- Cost: Cr 75,000
- Game Mechanics:
- Nutritional Optimization: Food prepared on this surface is exceptionally nourishing. Characters who consume such a meal reduce the time needed for natural healing by half for that day.
- Automated Decontamination: The surface automatically identifies and neutralizes common, low-complexity poisons, bacteria, and allergens (DM-0 on a related Medic check). This renders potentially hazardous foraged flora or fauna safe for consumption.
- First Aid Supplement: A character can use the surface to prepare a special restorative broth for a patient. This grants a DM+1 to any Medic (first aid) check made on that patient within the next hour. If the patient is suffering from a poison, this bonus increases to DM+2 on the Endurance roll to resist its effects.
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay
Cathayan Harmonizing Board
A heavy, dark cutting board made from a strange, lacquered wood unknown in the Empire, originating from the far-off lands of Grand Cathay. It is said that the serene warrior-monks of the Celestial Dragon Empire believe that the body is a battlefield of internal humours, and that true strength comes from maintaining a perfect balance. This board is a tool of that philosophy, designed to harmonize ingredients and, by extension, the body of the one who eats them.
- Enc: 1
- Price: 8 GC
- Availability: Exotic, Rare
- Game Mechanics: A character with the Trade (Cook) Skill who uses this board to prepare a meal can, with a successful Average (+20) Trade (Cook) Test, create a Harmonizing Meal. This process takes at least one hour of careful work. A character who consumes a Harmonizing Meal gains the following benefits:
- They may immediately remove 1 Fatigued Condition.
- For the next 12 hours, they gain a +10 bonus to any Endurance Test made to resist the effects of disease or poison.
- If the character is already suffering from a lingering, non-magical disease (such as a minor infection) or the after-effects of a poison, they may immediately make a Challenging (+0) Endurance Test. If successful, they throw off the last of the affliction’s effects. A character may only benefit from a Harmonizing Meal once per day.
