- Lore: Devised by the Inquisitive Monks of the Clear Silt Basin, this ascetic focus was crafted for magistracy investigators tasked with unraveling cold crimes and shattered crime scenes. The order understood that deduction was not merely an intellectual feat, but a refinement of the sensory meridians connecting the lungs to the third eye. By regulating inhalation into rhythmic, sharp cycles, the practitioner cools their cranial channels, purging bias and cognitive fog to perceive the faint, physical disturbances left behind by moving bodies and spent somatic energy.
- Description: A circular monocle frame carved from dark, polished mountain ox-horn, suspended by a triple-braided cord of raw, unbleached hemp. Set inside the horn bezel is a clear lens ground from pale golden rutilated quartz, traversed by hair-thin, needle-like inclusions of dark tourmaline. Mounted directly beneath the lower rim of the lens is a tiny, downward-curving intake whistle fashioned from hollow river-reed, which rests lightly beside the wearer’s right nostril to channel and meter inhalations directly past the glass.

Commercial Outlets, Academic Guilds, and Valuation of the Lucid Clue Monocle
- Academic Guildhalls and Lexicon Keepers:
- Setting: Found within the quiet, dust-filled libraries, scriverner’s enclaves, and magistracy academies of large urban silt-basin cities, these establishments smell of old parchment, dry ink, pulverized cedarwood, and focused meditation incense. Racks of analytical instruments, magnifying crystals, and rolled texts are meticulously indexed by quiet curators.
- Buying: Magistracy investigators, forensic scholars, and guild-licensed librarians purchase these monocles as official gear or academic aids for the standard baseline price of 9 silver coins. Masters and senior fellows of recognized forensic, logic, or scribal guilds can secure a professional courtesy discount, purchasing the piece for 7 silver coins and 5 nickels, with the understanding that the discount is not applied to non-members or apprentices.
- Selling: Quiet curatorial staff meticulously inspect the horn bezel for stress-fractures and the reed whistle for blockage. If the tourmaline inclusions within the quartz are perfectly distinct and the item shows minimal somatic wear, they will offer the standard salvage return of 9 copper coins, often in trade credit toward specialized analytical inks, binding parchment, or academic references.
- Curio Shops and Occult Antiquarians:
- Setting: Located in quiet, shaded alleyways just outside the central academic districts, these shops are cluttered with mismatched artifacts, fragmented stone statuary, strange navigation tools, and dried herbal focuses. They smell of camphor, antique resin, and slightly damp vellum.
- Buying: Disgraced academics, rogue investigators, and private fixers seek these out to avoid guild oversight. Antiquarians list the monocle between 11 and 13 silver coins, justifying the markup as “acquisition costs” or “untraceable inventory.”
- Selling: Proprietors take a cautious approach, testing the rutilated inclusions under high magnification for authenticity and assessing the ox-horn condition. They will purchase unrecorded pieces for the baseline salvage price of 9 copper coins, though if regional tax-records show a local increase in unsolved homicides or complex artifact thefts, inflating the demand for forensic aid, they will offer up to 1 silver coin and 2 nickels in barter value.
- Magistracy Auctions and Seized Goods Impounds:
- Setting: Held within austere, reinforced municipal storage yards or district courthouses, these environments smell of industrial pitch, cold iron, dust, and official paperwork. Confiscated goods are piled in bulk lots under tarps for public or internal viewing.
- Buying: These are primary acquisition points for newly commissioned government agents, private investigation agencies, and provincial sheriffs. Monocles are auctioned either individually or as part of larger forensic lots. An individual monocle typically starts around 4 silver coins, often selling for the baseline value of 9 silver coins, though aggressive bidding from rival agencies can sometimes push the price up to 10 or 11 silver coins for immediate acquisition.
- Selling: Magistracies do not directly purchase items back, though internal agents often donate their gear for refurbishment, or damaged items are cataloged for official recycling and receive the standard municipal recycling credit of 9 copper coins toward future equipment requisitions.
- Frontier Trade Posts and River-Barge Markets:
- Setting: Moored along muddy riverbanks or set at the final outposts of settled trade routes, these floating markets or tented enclaves smell of bilge water, fried river fish, raw hemp, and packed silt. Items are bundled and traded alongside grain, survival gear, and salvaged materials.
- Buying: Private mercenaries, land-claim auditors, and independent prospectors buy these to verify mineral finds, ancient site inscriptions, or structural integrity in remote locations. Barge merchants typically charge 10 to 12 silver coins for an operational piece, with a slight markup due to the logistical difficulty of transporting specialized delicate instruments to the frontier.
- Selling: Trade-barge operators take the monocle for the standard salvage value of 9 copper coins. If the outpost is currently engaged in complex property-boundary disputes or claims of ancient relic forgery, inflating the local need for trace analysis and truth verification, they will pay up to 1 silver coin in local currency or general rations trade credit.
Tactical Roleplay and Environmental Applications of the Lucid Clue Monocle
- Sealed Vaults and Claustrophobic Crime Scenes:
- Defensive Roleplay: In a blood-spattered inner sanctum where an assassin has set booby traps to cover their escape, the avatar fits the ox-horn rim into their eye socket and draws steady, rhythmic breaths through the reed whistle. The passive Ocular Meridian Purification cuts through smoke and gloom to reveal hair-thin tripwires and disturbed floor dust, while Breath-Steadied Logic prevents the avatar from reeling at the mutilation of the victims. Using Trace-Heat Luminescence, the investigator spots a warm palm print on a stone lion’s jaw, deducing the exact hidden latch before stepping into a primed poison-needle arc.
- Offensive Roleplay: While cornering a corrupt archivist who frantically attempts to burn the sole remaining ledger in a brazier, the suspect flings a handful of powdered lye to blind the investigator and drops the book into a false floor chute. The avatar triggers Scribe’s Residual Gaze as an immediate reaction. Drawing a sharp breath, the falling ledger flares with an unmistakable amber glow beneath the floorboards. Tracking the glowing outline straight through the floor, the avatar vaults the barrier and drives the archivist against the wall, seizing the evidence before it reaches the furnace below.
- Noisy Guildhalls and High-Stakes Interrogation Chambers:
- Defensive Roleplay: During a hostile inquest in a crowded merchant conclave, rival syndicates flood the chamber with loud objections, perfumed distraction oils, and deceptive body doubles. The avatar leans back, keeping an unbroken respiratory cadence through the nasal intake whistle. When an aggressive guild enforcer leans across the table, barking threats and feigning an imminent physical assault to force the avatar to draw a weapon, the avatar activates Somatic Tell Diagnosis. The monocle tracks the enforcer’s unshifting pupil dilation and steady pulse meridians, revealing the aggression is purely staged theater. The avatar remains motionless and calm, denying the opposition any legal pretext for violence.
- Offensive Roleplay: Cross-examining a smug customs officer who claims an illicit barge of black-market crystals never passed through his canal gates, the avatar engages Somatic Tell Diagnosis. Narrowing their breathing to a rhythmic hum, the avatar observes the official’s throat meridian spike and his lower eyelid flutter each time the “South Lock” is named. Piercing the lie with immediate deductive precision, the avatar lays out the exact hour, dock number, and forged manifest code, breaking the suspect’s nerve and dismantling his network before his conspirators can flee the district.
- Overgrown Wilderness and Silt-Delta Ambush Trails:
- Defensive Roleplay: Navigating a misty swamp trail notorious for camouflaged bandits and spring-loaded stake-pits, the avatar adjusts the monocle against their brow. Trace-Heat Luminescence highlights where reeds were snapped and displaced within the last hour, tracing the residual body heat left on muddy embankments. When the avatar approaches a seemingly empty clearing, the lens highlights faint, warm boot prints frozen near the brushline, warning the party to raise their shields well before the first poisoned dart is fired from the canopy.
- Offensive Roleplay: Pursuing an escaped courier through a muddy marsh maze after a skirmish, the avatar arrives at a fork in the canal where three separate boats have churned the silt to confuse the trail. The investigator kneels at the water’s edge and activates Reconstruction Inhalation. Drawing a slow breath through the reed, translucent vaporous paths weave through the air over the water, showing the exact arc of the courier’s frantic poling pole and the trajectory of a discarded cipher cylinder thrown into the reeds 20 minutes earlier. Pinpointing the correct route without delay, the avatar closes the distance and ambushes the fugitive while he is still attempting to untangle his skiff.

Perception of Activation:
- Sight:
- User’s Perspective: The field of view through your right eye tightens into hyper-focused acuity. The dark tourmaline needles suspended within the rutilated quartz flare with a thin, hair-like luminescence. Ambient glare, dust motes, and soft shadows peel away, replaced by heightened contrasts where micro-fissures in stone, faint indentations in parchment, and minute fiber strands stand out as if etched in sharp relief.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers notice the pale golden lens catch the light with an unnatural, internal flash. The dark tourmaline needles within the monocle seem to swivel and align toward the center of the user’s pupil, emitting a faint, pinprick amber gleam deep within the ox-horn rim.
- Positives: Pierces through visual clutter, smoke, and low light, allowing the user to spot microscopic forensic details, latent fingerprints, and hidden seams instantly.
- Negatives: Produces a strong monocular visual imbalance; the sudden disparity in depth perception and brightness between the unaugmented eye and the monocle can cause brief disequilibrium when turning the head quickly.
- Hearing:
- User’s Perspective: The rhythmic rush of your own breathing through the reed intake whistle transforms into a low, harmonic pitch that sounds like wind humming through hollow river bamboo. Extraneous background noises—such as room murmurs, dripping pipes, or wind—recede into a distant, flat drone, while close-range acoustic details like a suspect’s sudden sharp intake of breath or the scuff of a boot on dry floorboards sharpen dramatically.
- Observer’s Perspective: Anyone standing within arm’s reach hears a soft, distinctive, high-pitched whistle with each inhalation the wearer draws, resembling the faint whistle of a reed pipe tuned to a single meditative note.
- Positives: Filters out chaotic auditory distractions and emotional noise, letting the investigator isolate crucial acoustic anomalies and micro-verbal tells.
- Negatives: Emits a faint, telltale whistling sound on every breath, making complete auditory stealth difficult when crouching in silent spaces close to sharp-eared targets.
- Touch:
- User’s Perspective: A crisp, chilling numbness blooms around the right orbital bone and the side of the bridge of the nose. As the cranial qi channels cool, the skin of your forehead tightens, sweeping away tension headaches, nervous brow twitches, and beads of stress sweat.
- Observer’s Perspective: The flesh around the user’s right eye turns slightly paler and drawn as blood and surface heat recede inward toward the deeper skull meridians.
- Positives: Suppresses involuntary micro-expressions, facial tics, and autonomic panic reactions, maintaining a calm physical demeanor during grim discoveries.
- Negatives: Leaves the skin surrounding the eye cold and somewhat desensitized, making it difficult to feel light air currents or small airborne particles landing near the eye.
- Smell:
- User’s Perspective: The ambient odor of blood, rot, burning pitch, or sour perfume is filtered through the reed whistle into a neutral, dry scent reminiscent of sun-baked river silt, dry rushes, and cold polished horn.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers cannot perceive an olfactory change, though they may notice the user inhaling deeply and steadily without flinching, even when standing directly over foul or toxic remains.
- Positives: Neutralizes sickening and nauseating odors, preventing involuntary gagging or lightheadedness in gruesome forensic environments.
- Negatives: Impairs the investigator’s natural ability to detect subtle environmental chemical hazards, trace poisons, or faint burning gas lines through smell alone.
- Taste:
- User’s Perspective: A sharp, metallic, cold-mineral sensation coats the roof of the mouth and the back of the throat, resembling the taste of holding a clean silver coin under the tongue or sipping well water drawn from deep granite bedrock.
- Observer’s Perspective: The observer sees the user swallow once with deliberate slowness as the qi settles into the throat, their jaw setting into a rigid, calm posture.
- Positives: Prevents the dry-mouth reflex caused by sudden adrenaline surges, keeping the investigator’s speech crisp and articulate during confrontation.
- Negatives: Blunts the palate, leaving a persistent stony aftertaste that makes it impossible to discern subtle flavors or ingest poisons for taste testing.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Kinetic Vector Tracing:
- User’s Perspective: When examining an area of sudden physical violence or disruption, you see pale, vaporous ribbon-trails lingering in the air. These translucent streams outline the arc of a swung weapon, the ricochet of a shattered lock, or the path of a falling body, allowing your mind to mentally replay the mechanical sequence of events like moving silhouettes.
- Observer’s Perspective: To outside onlookers, the user appears to track empty air with their gaze, tilting their head to trace trajectories that no one else can see.
- Positives: Enables exact chronological reconstruction of violent struggles, falls, or structural sabotage without needing living eyewitnesses.
- Negatives: Heavy sensory clutter in rooms that have seen multiple layers of foot traffic or chaotic multi-person skirmishes, requiring deep cognitive strain to parse one trajectory from another.
- Meridian Dilation Resonance:
- User’s Perspective: When looking at a speaking suspect, their chest and facial qi lines become visible as thin threads of dull red and pale blue beneath the skin. When the suspect deliberately tells an outright falsehood or withholds crucial truth, you perceive a sudden, jagged spasm in their throat meridian and a momentary constriction in their heart-space, revealing their deceit.
- Observer’s Perspective: Sensitives and qi-cultivators watching the user notice a thin, needle-like spike of golden energy radiating from the monocle directly into the target’s face, establishing an active analytical bridge between the two individuals.
- Positives: Exposes hidden guilt, falsehoods, and manufactured alibis with immediate diagnostic precision, bypassing conventional oratorical bluffs.
- Negatives: Sociopaths, entities with completely alien biologies, or masters of false-pulse breath control can produce irregular or absent meridian signals that can confuse the user’s deductive conclusions.

Recipe: Monocle of the Lucid Clue Qigong Focus
- Materials Needed:
- One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized, clean clarity, harvested to serve as the somatic resonance core and kinetic trace reservoir).
- One solid disc of pale golden rutilated quartz (flawless crystal matrix containing distinct needle-like inclusions of dark tourmaline).
- One section of cured, dense mountain ox-horn (black or deep amber, free of structural cracks or insect bores).
- One segment of hollow, dried river-reed (narrow bore, harvested from slow-moving silt beds).
- One yard of triple-braided raw, unbleached hemp cord (tightly twisted for suspension and ear-wrap).
- One ounce of pulverized pumice and fine jeweler’s tripoli powder (for lapidary polishing).
- One small vial of clarified bone glue (rendered from hoof or tendon, heat-activated).
- One small tin of mineral oil (for lubricating the lapidary cutting wheel and nourishing the horn frame).
- Tools Required:
- One foot-treadle lapidary wheel with fine-grit grinding and smoothing discs.
- One miniature diamond-tipped core drill (for boring the horn bezel seat and reed anchor port).
- One jewelers’ coping saw with fine wire-steel blades.
- One set of curved horn-scrapers and fine-grain sharkskin sanding sheets.
- One miniature brass caliper and balance scale.
- One small alcohol spirit-lamp and brass heating spatula (for softening horn and melting bone glue).
- One set of micro-reamers and fine reed-carving knives.
- Skill Requirements:
- Lapidary & Optical Grinding: Skill Level 2 (for grinding, truing, and polishing rutilated quartz without dislodging internal tourmaline needle structures).
- Horn-Carving & Joinery: Skill Level 1 (for heat-forming ox-horn bezels, friction-fitting lenses, and securing miniature reed fixtures).
- Qigong Breath Cultivation: Basic mastery of single-nostril inhalation, cranial meridian cooling, and eye-channel qi projection.
- Crafting Steps:
- Grind and True the Rutilated Lens: Mount the disc of pale golden rutilated quartz on a wooden dop stick using warm wax. Using the foot-treadle lapidary wheel lubricated with cold water and mineral oil, grind the quartz down to a thin, circular plano-convex lens. Ensure the internal tourmaline needles run horizontally across the optical field. Progressively polish the surface with pumice and tripoli powder until completely clear and free of surface scratches.
- Cleave and Bed the Somatic Crystal Core: Weigh the Tier 1 magic crystal on the balance scale to ensure appropriate mass. Using the jewelers’ saw and a diamond wire blade, cleave the crystal into a flat, crescent-shaped wafer. Carve a hidden, shallow seating groove along the inner edge of what will become the lower bezel to snugly hold this crystal wafer against the rim of the quartz lens.
- Carve and Form the Ox-Horn Bezel: Use the coping saw to cut a circular ring from the cured mountain ox-horn. Pare down the walls using curved horn-scrapers until it forms a grooved bezel matching the circumference of the quartz lens. Gently heat the horn ring over the spirit-lamp until pliable, insert the cleaved magic crystal wafer into the lower groove, and press the quartz lens into the main retention channel. As the horn cools, it contracts firmly around both stones, locking them into a rigid, seamless seat without requiring excess adhesive.
- Craft and Mount the Reed Intake Whistle: Select a straight, cured segment of hollow river-reed. Using the fine carving knife, cut a miniature, downward-curving whistle notch near the upper end, tuning the acoustic channel to produce a soft, harmonic tone under a controlled draw. Drill a matching socket into the bottom edge of the ox-horn bezel using the miniature core drill. Seat the top of the reed whistle into this socket, securing it with a drop of clarified bone glue so the lower intake rests adjacent to the wearer’s right nostril.
- Rig the Hemp Suspension Cord: Pierce a small eyelet through the raised decorative crest at the top of the ox-horn frame. Thread the triple-braided raw hemp cord through the eyelet, securing it with an interlocking square knot. Form a counter-weighted loop at the loose end designed to drape comfortably over the back of the ear or tie off behind the head.
- Somatic Attunement and Meridian Awakening: Seat the finished monocle securely into the right eye socket, bringing the reed whistle directly beside the right nostril. Assume a seated meditation posture, seal the left nostril with the left thumb, and initiate ten minutes of steady, rhythmic inhalation exclusively through the right side of the nasal passage. Draw cold, filtered air through the reed, circulating somatic qi upward into the sinus and across the cranial meridians into the eye. When the tourmaline needles in the quartz glow with a faint amber light and align with the pupil, the ocular channels are synchronized and the focus is awakened.
Ox-Horn Eye and Scribe Who Counted Footprints of Dead Minister Across River of Wet Salt
In the day when the water of the Great Basin was not yet salted by the weeping of the widows of the Bronze Dynasty, there sat upon the high chair of judgment a chief man whose name was Governor Iron-Ribs, though his mothers had washed his small navel under the title of Lord Meng. In that cycle of years, when a thief broke the clay seal upon an oil-vat, or when an uncle strangled a nephew in the darkness of the bean-sheds, the elders did not ask for witnesses who had clean tongues; for men had already learned that words are made of warm wind, and warm wind turns sour whenever a sack of silver is shaken in the market. Instead, the elders called the Inquisitive Monks of the Reed-Ditch, who carried no daggers, but walked with their nostrils wide and their eyes fixed upon the dust of the tiles.
Among these breath-gatherers was a poor novice called Master Shen-Who-Drinks-Wind. He had no hair upon his crown, and his robe was dyed with the gray scum that gathers upon the roots of the river-bulrush. His office was to sit in the low corner of the Judgment Court at the Third Canal-Gate, holding in his sleeve a small hoop of ox-horn that was not round like the sun, but was pulled sideways like a bull’s ear when the rope bites into the gristle. Set within this black horn was a piece of yellow cloud-stone that had inside its meat many black thorns, like the legs of water-spiders that had drowned in oil before the earth had an emperor; and hanging under the stone was a whistle made of a hollow ditch-reed, cut with two notches to whistle into the right hole of his snout.
Now it was set down in the ancient bone-writings—which the foolish translators of the Fifth Era mistook for the names of nine bulls—that the Great Chancellor Bao, who kept the keys to the Seven Rice-Vaults, was found upon his carpet in the eleventh watch of the night with his throat as flat as an ironed sash. There was no knife in his brisket; there was no cord of twisted ox-gut cast about his neck; yet the spirit-fire had run out through his nostrils, and his tongue was as black as an old plum that has fallen into the stable-drain.
Governor Iron-Ribs called his seven hundred lictors, whose coats were made of dried bull-hide studded with brass nails, and he commanded them: “Seize the cook who boiled the river-snails! Seize the third concubine who played the five-stringed board! Seize the lame boy who carries the vinegar-jar! Cast them into the hot-lime pits, for one of their hearts has turned black, and until the hot lime has eaten their meat, the ghost of Chancellor Bao will scream like a kite above my bed-poles!”
Then Master Shen-Who-Drinks-Wind rose up from his rush mat, bowed his forehead three times against the lime-dust of the flags, and lifted the black ox-horn to his right temple.
The translation says here: He did not look through the bone-circle with the eye of an ox that sees only grass; he shut the left gate of his snout with his thumb, and pulled the cold air from the floor through the reed-whistle until the stone inside his skull did make the water-noise, sho-sho-sho, like a wild carp diving under a raft.
When the cold qi entered the eye-meridian, Master Shen looked upon the corpse of the Great Chancellor. Behold, the world was no longer red with the torches of the angry lictors, but was the color of a pond frozen under a gray sky. The dead flesh of the Chancellor was black like cold iron, but upon his left shoulder-bone, where the crane-embroidered silk was torn away, there sat five golden spots—small and thin like the scales of a roach, yet burning with the trace-heat of a hand that had laid heavy weight upon the old man while his breath was strangled into his belly.
“Lord Governor,” said the novice through his whistling nostril, “the cook has hands as thick as pig-troughs, and his fingers are blunt from chopping garlic; yet these marks were pressed by a hand that has a thumb as long as a scholar’s stylus, and the nail of the middle finger is split down the center like an ear of millet.”
The Governor was angered, for he had already promised the kitchen of the dead Chancellor to his own brother-in-law, and he wished to hang the cook before the midday meal. He cried out: “The stone in your horn is a demon-eye that sees lies! The Chancellor died because the cook boiled water that had floated past an unburied dog! Show me the path of this five-fingered murderer, or your skin shall be stripped to make drum-heads for the canal-boats!”
Then Master Shen stood upright and engaged the Reconstruction Inhalation. He drew the breath three times through the reed with a sharp sound like a crane snapping an eel. The tourmaline needles inside the quartz stone grew red and hot, like hair that is cast into a brazier, yet the horn frame remained cold like well-water.
When he looked down upon the tiles, the air was no longer empty. The ancient text, translated by the blind monk of the Yellow Wall, says: The dust that has been touched by the soul does not forget the foot that kicked it; it rises in a yellow vapor that hangs like the web of an old spider between the floor and the rafter.
Shen saw a line of faint golden mist that drifted away from the bed-boards. It was not the footstep of a living man that stamps down the reed-mats, but the backward-trailing vapor of one who walks with his heels raised high, carrying an iron weight in his breast. The novice followed this thread of mist out through the side-door of the judgment-hall, where the lictors dared not go because of the dark. He walked past the stable-troughs; he walked past the stone cistern where the river-maids beat the dirty linen; and he came to the high wall where the Governor’s own treasury-officer, Lord Wei-with-the-Silver-Clasp, was standing upon a wood-pile, hiding a sack of imperial gold-leaves inside an owl’s nest under the eaves.
Lord Wei had a face as white as clean meal, and his sleeves were heavy with the perfume of dry cloves. When he saw the novice approaching with the single glass eye glowing like an ember in the dark, his liver turned to cold water, yet he smiled with his thirty teeth and said: “Why does the water-beggar walk under the wall when the Governor is hanging the kitchen-serfs? If you have come to beg for the crusts of the meal-cakes, take this piece of stamped copper and hold your snout shut.”
Master Shen adjusted the hemp cord behind his ear and engaged the Somatic Tell Diagnosis. He drew a rapid, three-part breath through the reed-whistle, his lungs whistling like a bird trapped in a basket.
Looking through the yellow lens, the fine silk robe of Lord Wei became like thin gauze, and the channels of his throat and chest were laid bare like the veins upon a dried melon-leaf. Master Shen saw that the throat-meridian of the treasury-officer was swollen to the thickness of an ox-thumb, pulsing with a dark, purplish fire; and whenever the officer spoke the word “kitchen,” the blue blood behind his left ear jumped like a cricket in the dust. Moreover, upon the thumb of Lord Wei’s right hand, the nail was split from the root to the tip, exactly like the mark left upon the dead Chancellor’s neck.
“You have no need of copper, Lord Wei,” spoke Master Shen, and his voice was cold and thin like ice breaking under a sledge. “For when you laid your left thumb upon Chancellor Bao’s windpipe to take the keys of the gold-room, his dying breath entered your knuckles. Even now, the black tourmaline inside my stone drinks the fire of your guilt; the gold upon your boots shines through the wall of your shoe, and the dead man’s scream is caught inside your collar like a wasp in an earthenware jug.”
Lord Wei screamed, for he believed the novice had brought a river-demon to devour his eyes. He drew an iron bodkin from his sash and sprang from the wood-pile to drive the point into the throat of Master Shen, seeking to break the glass and stop the whistle.
Then Master Shen performed the Scribe’s Residual Gaze. As the assassin leaped, the novice drew a sudden, deep gasp through his right nostril, snapping his eye upon the bodkin. The iron tool immediately flashed with a bright, amber radiance, so intense that the darkness of the courtyard was torn open as though lightning had struck the water-butt. The lictors, hearing the scream and seeing the bright light burn through the stable-lattice, came running with their brass-studded bills and their torches.
They found Lord Wei fallen upon his face in the horse-muck, blinded by the amber glare that still burned upon his hand, while Master Shen stood above him, his right eye as clear and quiet as the winter sky, his nostril giving forth only the soft, whistling hum of the clean river-reed.
When the gold was brought forth from the owl’s nest, and the split nail was fitted into the gray bruises upon the dead minister’s shoulder, Governor Iron-Ribs was ashamed. He gave to Master Shen seven jars of sweet wine and twenty rolls of silk that had been dyed in the urine of mountain-goats to make them yellow.
Master Shen left the wine upon the courthouse flags and took not one thread of the goat-silk. He washed the dust from his hemp cord in the water of the Fourth Sluice, laid his monocle back into his greasy sleeve, and returned to his mat in the reed-ditch; for it was recorded by his disciples that he who sees through the yellow stone cannot drink the wine of magistrates, because he sees inside the cup the sweat of the tax-gatherers and the tears of the women who sifted the rice.
Moral of the story: He who seeks the truth by shouting and swinging the iron rod only fills the ditch with the bones of the innocent; but he who quiets his breath and cools his eye will find that even the smallest pebble remembers who stepped upon it, and the darkness of the mighty cannot swallow the track left by a single bloody thumb.
