Qigong 442 of the Gale Stride Pulse

  • Lore: Handcrafted in the terraced cloud-orchards of the Whispering Escarpment, this somatic focus was developed by the Wind-Runners of the High Ridge—messengers who traverse crumbling mountain paths and sheer rock chimneys. By combining explosive diaphragmatic breathing (kiai-breathing) with circular pelvic weight shifts, runners learned to circulate qi from the lower furnace down through the femoral channels. The sash stores and circulates kinetic breath, allowing Tier 1 avatars to compress distance into sudden, single-breath bursts of linear speed.
  • Description: A narrow, triple-braided waist wrap woven from bleached mountain hemp and flexible strips of wind-dried silver reed. Strung along the navel line are five hollow, pale jade cylinder beads, each stopped with resin-soaked white silk and drilled with a tiny spiraling flute hole. When the wearer moves, the beads compress ambient air, emitting a rhythmic, low-pitched flutter that matches the wearer’s breathing cadence.

Commercial Outlets, Trade Enclaves, and Valuation of the Gale-Stride Sash

  • Alpine Courier Guild Stations and Relay Roosts:
    • Setting: Established along high cliff trails, suspension crossings, and aerodrome waypoints, these open-air loggias smell of mountain cedar, dried marsh grass, and leather grease. Rows of running sandals, bamboo message canisters, and woven breath belts hang from polished spruce pegs along the limestone walls.
    • Buying: Passing runners, scout avatars, and pilgrims purchase the sash from station stewards for the standard Tier 1 baseline price of 9 silver coins. Registered members of regional courier circuits or post networks receive an active-service discount, reducing the price to 8 silver coins and 2 nickels.
    • Selling: Guild quartermasters examine the five jade beads by sounding them with a tuning fork or testing the flute draft with a steady breath. An avatar parting with an intact wrap receives the legal baseline payout of 9 copper coins, though during storm seasons when messenger attrition is high, station factors will offer up to 1 silver coin in immediate scrip.
  • Monastic Dispensaries and Qigong Apothecaries:
    • Setting: Tucked inside quiet temple courtyards or terraced garden paths, these serene storefronts smell of burning mugwort, drying lotus leaves, and camphor oil. Shelves are stocked with meridian charts, acupuncture needles, herbal lung draughts, and linen meditation sashes.
    • Buying: Monks and lay apothecaries sell consecrated sashes to traveling disciples and pilgrims for 9 silver coins. Avatars who present a temple seal or demonstrate proper breath cultivation before the herbalist can trade for the sash by paying 7 silver coins alongside an offering of rare mountain herbs or incense.
    • Selling: Temple treasurers assess the purity of the silver reed fiber and verify that the jade beads are unchipped. The standard salvage payout is 9 copper coins, though merchants will gladly credit 1 silver coin toward restorative salves, poultices, or lung-clearing elixirs.
  • Bazaar Caravan Outfitters and Pack-Train Chandleries:
    • Setting: Set up in bustling oasis plazas, roadside caravanserais, and city trade gates, these canvas pavilions smell of roasted tea, pack-mule wool, dust, and tallow lanterns. Barrels of hardtack, rope coils, and desert walking gear crowd the perimeter around heavy brass balance scales.
    • Buying: Caravan chandlers market the sash to outriders and flank guards tasked with keeping up with galloping beasts across loose gravel or sand. Due to standard travel markups outside urban centers, outfitter merchants charge between 10 and 12 silver coins for a complete, attuned sash.
    • Selling: Traveling peddlers and drovers buy second-hand belts from adventurers for 9 copper coins. If the caravan has recently lost outriders to ambushes and urgently requires scouts with linear dash capability, chandlers will negotiate an emergency buyout of up to 1 silver coin and 5 nickels in trade goods.
  • Underground Fence Warrens and Smuggler Flophouses:
    • Setting: Hidden in dockside basements, sewer sluice alcoves, or abandoned catacomb chambers, these dim operations smell of stale rice beer, pipe weed, and damp lime. Stolen weapons, contraband seals, and mobility garments are piled on rough driftwood tables away from municipal gaze.
    • Buying: Cutpurses, fugitive avatars, and illicit couriers who operate without guild licenses purchase the item anonymously. Fences demand a heavy convenience premium for untracked gear, selling the sash for 13 to 15 silver coins in hard, unrecorded coin.
    • Selling: Fences purchase intact or bloodstained sashes without asking for identification or proof of ownership, offering an immediate flat payout of 9 copper coins. If municipal patrols have tightened harbor blockades and fast rooftop-escape gear is in high demand, a persuasive seller can secure an outright cash payout of 2 silver coins.

Tactical Roleplay and Environmental Applications of the Gale-Stride Sash

  • Narrow Mountain Ridges and High-Altitude Cliff Paths:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Caught on a frost-slicked limestone ledge while a rival scout fires crossbow bolts, the avatar drops their center of gravity and executes a sudden, reactive Feather-Step Pivot. The jade beads on the sash release a sharp hiss of compressed qi, causing the avatar to instantly dash 5 feet backward off the line of fire. The sudden displacement imposes a penalty on the incoming attack, allowing the bolt to splinter harmlessly against the cliff face instead of piercing the avatar’s ribs.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Closing the distance across a jagged mountain gap toward a rival archer holding a narrow bottleneck, the avatar triggers the Gale-Burst Dash. Expelling a sharp breath through their teeth, the avatar projects a 20-foot linear surge forward that completely bypasses the rocky debris. Ignoring the loose scree underfoot thanks to Unburdened Stride, the avatar crosses the hazardous terrain in a single heartbeat to deliver a crushing close-quarters strike before the archer can notch another arrow.
  • Slick Subterranean Tunnels and Ore Chutes:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Fleeing pursuing cavern-crawlers through a sloping, mud-slicked drainage tunnel, the avatar is subjected to a sudden concussive roar and shockwave from a collapsed structural beam behind them. Activating Breath-Locked Poise, the avatar channels qi through their lower dantian, rooting their posture against the violent air blast. Despite the explosive pressure and wet ground, the avatar refuses to be knocked prone or swept down the chute.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Cornered in a dead-end mining shaft filled withloose gravel and jagged stones, the avatar stands motionless to perform the Resonating Lung Cycle. Taking three deep breath cycles, they purge physical exhaustion and gain a sudden surge of kinetic momentum. Exploding forward with a Gale-Burst Dash, the avatar ignores the difficult terrain penalties of the gravel field, rocketing past the startled guards before they can bring their heavy mining picks to bear.
  • Urban Rooftops and Marketplace Alleyways:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Trapped on a tiled merchant roof during a nighttime pursuit by municipal guards, the avatar leaps across a wide gap between buildings. When an enemy spearman lunges from an adjacent chimney tower to intercept them mid-air, the avatar utilizes the sash’s built-in momentum to instantly shift position, using the Cadence of the Lower Sea passive boost to clear an extra 10 feet of horizontal space and land securely on the opposing eaves.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Moving through a crowded, chaotic bazaar square where bounty hunters block the main street, the avatar activates the Resonating Lung Cycle to prepare for a swift exit. As the guards close in, the avatar unleashes a rapid Gale-Burst Dash, darting through the narrow gaps between fruit stalls and canvas awnings without breaking stride. The difficult terrain of scattered crates and merchant goods fails to slow them down, enabling a clean, unhindered escape into the upper alleyways.

Perception of Activation:

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective: The world directly ahead appears to compress along a linear perspective axis. Thin, spiraling whorls of pale, seafoam-cyan vapor vent outward from your navel line, tracing luminous ribbon-trails around your hips that sweep backward into your running slipstream.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers witness a sudden, blinding flash of milky jade luminescence pulsing from the five waist beads. An instant later, your form blurs into a translucent streak of speed, enveloped by twin spiraling funnels of pale wind that kick up a wake of dust, leaves, and loose pebbles.
    • Positives: Provides crisp visual alignment for linear vectors, highlighting open lanes of travel and clear foot-placement lines across chaotic terrain.
    • Negatives: The brilliant flare of jade light and trailing wind-whorls completely eliminate visual stealth, making the user an obvious, high-visibility target during open sprints.
  • Hearing:
    • User’s Perspective: Ambient combat sounds drop behind a wall of rushing wind, punctuated by a harmonic, multi-toned chord ringing directly through your pelvic bowl as the five flute beads chime in resonant harmony with your rapid exhalation.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Bystanders hear a sharp, whip-like hiss—like pressurized air jetting from a cracked pneumatic valve—instantly followed by a low, ascending musical drone similar to a high-speed bamboo whistle whistling across an alpine gorge.
    • Positives: The sharp acoustic snap masks the sound of the user’s initial footfall, making the precise moment of acceleration difficult for enemies to time for counter-attacks.
    • Negatives: The shrill whistle of the five jade beads echoes off canyon walls, stone alleys, and cavern ceilings, carrying far enough to alert distant patrols to an active runner.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective: A firm, electric pressure band cinches around your lower dantian, as though an invisible, taut belt were driving your pelvis directly forward. Your legs feel weightless and spring-loaded, while the cold air against your face firms into a supportive, buoyant cushion rather than an opposing wall of resistance.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Anyone standing within five feet feels a sudden, concussive outward draft of cool air radiating from the runner’s hips, knocking back cloaks, unbuttoned hems, and loose dirt as the user rockets forward.
    • Positives: Completely deadens the jarring impact of high-speed running on knees and ankles, preserving joint integrity when striking rough stone or frozen gravel.
    • Negatives: The sudden, violent acceleration places high tensile stress on the abdominal wall and lower back, leaving an unconditioned user with sore core muscles after consecutive bursts.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective: Your nostrils are instantly cleared by a brisk, cold rush of air carrying the crisp fragrance of sun-dried mountain reeds, crushed sweet grass, and the faint, mineral sweetness of polished river stone.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Witnesses catch a sudden, lingering breeze that smells of high-altitude frost, alpine pine needles, and freshly ozone-scrubbed mountain atmosphere cutting through stagnant urban or dungeon stench.
    • Positives: Immediately flushes lingering smoke, tear gas, or foul sewer vapors from the user’s airway with an intake of pristine, oxygenated air.
    • Negatives: The sweet mountain-grass aroma leaves a distinct olfactory trail that tracking beasts can easily distinguish from the surrounding muck or stone.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective: As you expel the focused kiai breath through your teeth, a clean, mint-like coolness washes over your palate, leaving a dry, flinty mineral aftertaste resembling pure glacier runoff.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Those close enough to breathe the immediate wake notice a brief, crisp tingling on the tongue, much like catching a spray of cold mountain dew during an unexpected gust of wind.
    • Positives: Stimulates natural saliva flow, soothing dry throat and coughing fits brought on by extended exertion or dry mountain air.
    • Negatives: Imposes a momentary, numbing chill across the tongue that temporarily dulls taste perception and verbal articulation for a few heartbeats.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Vector-Path Meridian Alignment:
      • User’s Perspective: Your mind instinctively registers spatial distance not in feet or paces, but as single breath-cycles. Straight, uninterrupted lines across the battlefield illuminate in your awareness as vibrant, friction-free paths pulling your center of mass forward.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Arcanists and qi-sensitives perceive a sharp, needle-like spike in regional somatic pressure along the runner’s line of sight, as if the space between the runner and their destination were physically folded for a fraction of a second.
      • Positives: Allows the user to intuitively calculate safe, hazard-free sprint vectors through obstacle-filled terrain without pausing to plan their footing.
      • Negatives: Induces a narrow, tunnel-visioned mindset that makes the user less aware of peripheral ambushes, flanking attacks, or lateral hazards entering from outside their linear path.
    • Lower Furnace Harmonic Pulse:
      • User’s Perspective: You feel an internal, rhythmic thrumming in your lower abdomen, matching your heartbeat to the vibration of the jade beads. This resonance dissolves physical hesitation and doubt, anchoring your spirit into pure, forward kinetic drive.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Empaths and spirit-trackers feel a sudden, clean expansion of vibrant vital energy radiating outward, contrasting sharply with tired, chaotic combat auras nearby.
      • Positives: Provides temporary mental fortitude against mundane hesitation, intimidation, and hesitation penalties when committing to a high-speed charge or retreat.
      • Negatives: Instills an impulse toward constant forward motion, making it frustrating and mentally taxing to suddenly stop, hold position, or maintain a defensive crouch immediately after dashing.

Recipe: Gale-Stride Pulse Qigong Sash

  • Materials Needed:
    • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted, harvested to serve as the somatic kinetic accumulator and aeromantic pulse battery).
    • Three yards of bleached mountain hemp fiber (tightly spun into coarse triple-ply cordage).
    • Two yards of split silver reed strips (harvested from high-altitude terrace bogs and sun-cured for springy tensile strength).
    • Five cylindrical pale jade beads (each approximately 1.5 inches long and 0.5 inches in diameter, free of structural occlusions).
    • Half an ounce of refined white tree pine resin (boiled clear for acoustic sealant).
    • One square foot of unspun raw white silk batting (for acoustic chamber damping).
    • One sacrificial common runner’s hemp sandal strap or courier dispatch whistle (consumed entirely during the crafting process to bind the somatic stride resonance).
  • Tools Required:
    • One miniature lapidary core drill and fine diamond-grit burrs.
    • One stone lap wheel with polishing rouge.
    • One jeweler’s scoring chisel and light mallet.
    • One small clay crucible and alcohol-flame spirit burner.
    • One fluid collector fitted with a fine needle nozzle (for injecting liquid resin).
    • One hardwood braiding lucet or knotting frame.
    • One bone bodkin or blunt lacing needle.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Textile Weaving / Cord Knotting: Skill Level 2 (for multi-strand hemp-and-reed flat braiding, structural core tensioning, and bead seating).
    • Lapidary / Gem Carving: Skill Level 1 (for precision jade cylinder coring, acoustic flute hole placement, and edge chamfering).
    • Qigong Breath Cultivation: Basic familiarity with directing kinetic breath (kiai-breathing) from the lower dantian into linear somatic channels.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Carve and Core the Jade Resonators: Mount each of the five pale jade cylinders onto the lap wheel to polish the exterior surfaces smooth. Using the miniature core drill and diamond burrs, drill a clean longitudinal passage through the center of each cylinder. Drill a single angled micro-flute vent into the midsection of each cylinder’s outer wall, angling the hole at 45 degrees so oncoming draft compresses inward during forward movement.
    • Cleave and Attune the Catalyst: Place the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into the crucible over the spirit burner. Introduce the sacrificial runner’s sandal strap or dispatch whistle directly into the flame beneath the vessel. As the offering burns to pale ash, perform continuous, rhythmic kiai-breaths over the vessel, directing your vital breath into the rising smoke. Draw the liberated kinetic energy into the crystal until it begins to pulse with a pale seafoam-cyan luminescence and the sacrificial tool is entirely consumed.
    • Seed the Resonator Chambers: Using the jeweler’s scoring chisel, carefully divide the attuned Tier 1 magic crystal into five equal, rice-grain-sized shards. Insert one charged crystal shard into the center bore of each jade cylinder, positioning it directly beneath the angled flute vent. Pack a wisp of raw white silk batting behind each shard to dampen internal vibration without choking airflow.
    • Seal the Jade Acoustic Ends: Melt the refined white pine resin over the low-heat spirit burner. Using the fluid collector with the fine needle nozzle, inject molten resin into the terminal ends of the five jade cylinders, capping the longitudinal bores while leaving the central chamber and the angled flute vents completely open and clear. Chamfer the outer lips of the cylinders on the lap wheel.
    • Braiding the Compression Wrap: Set up three strands of bleached mountain hemp and two split strips of flexible silver reed on the braiding lucet. Braid the materials into a firm, triple-layered flat sash roughly three inches wide. Keep the tension taut so the springy silver reed stays nestled between the hemp plies, forming an elastic spine that compresses snugly against the wearer’s abdominal wall.
    • Mount the Resonator Array: Using the bone bodkin and remaining hemp thread, stitch five reinforced harness loops along the central front band of the sash, spaced evenly to sit directly over the wearer’s lower dantian (navel line). Slide the five prepared jade cylinders into the loops with their flute vents pointing outward and angled forward along the direction of stride. Secure each bead with double-knotted burial hitches.
    • Breath-Pulse Attunement: Wrap the finished sash tightly around your waist, aligning the five jade cylinders directly over your lower dantian. Stand in a horse-stance and perform nine deep, unbroken cycles of explosive diaphragmatic breathwork, forcefully expelling air through your teeth on each exhalation. When all five jade beads emit a simultaneous, low-pitched musical whistle and a cool shockwave ripples through your pelvis, the attunement is locked and the sash is ready for use.

Low-Belly Breath and Messenger Who Outran Bronze Cloud

In the revolving turn of the great year of the Horned Turtle, when the moon called White Liver was eaten by the sky-dragon three times in one planting, and the sovereign lords of the High Escarpment had not yet laid down the seven copper rules for measuring the wheat-tithe, there was a valley called by the old tooth-carvers the Valley of the Dry Throat. In this hollow place between the high stones, the atmosphere did not flow like water, but hung like wet felt soaked in lime-wash. The men of that tribe had thick calves and bellies shaped like gourds, for they dragged heavy stone carts from the lower clay pits to the mountain gates, and their lungs made a noise like dry horn scraping across an empty granary.

Among these quarry-slaves lived an avatar of Tier One whose mark upon the census roll is set down in the bird-foot chiselings as Ten-Paces-Wu. He was called Ten-Paces because his lower furnace was cold and his legs were short like the legs of a badger; whenever the whip-master commanded him to run with the fire-pot to light the beacon ovens on the ridge, he could run but ten paces before his breath burst out through his nostrils like hot chaff, and his knees struck the flint stones, causing the hot coals to scatter into the thorn bushes.

For this fault, the Overseer of the Quarry-Gate, an earthen-nosed man named Lord Ox-Spine, caused Ten-Paces-Wu to be bound to the beating-post four times in every change of the moon. Lord Ox-Spine cried out with a voice like a bronze basin dropped upon gravel: “You idle ditch-worm, whose belly holds neither fire nor wind! If you cannot carry the noon-fire to the middle terrace before the oil-pot burns down to the hemp-knot, I will sell your two thighs to the grease-boilers, and your hide shall be stretched over a water-pail!”

Now in that seventh winter of the famine, there arose from the cleft of the Northern Sulfur Pit a great host of the Gray Skinned Reavers, who rode upon horned running-birds whose beaks were bound with iron wire. The Reavers surrounded the lower brick-works while the sun was yet behind the crag. They set fire to the barley bins and slew the gate-watchers with long reed arrows dipped in viper-gall. Lord Ox-Spine and seventy men of the heavy carts were shut up inside the small square tower of red limestone, having no water save three jars of sour beer, and having no message-arrow left to shoot over the cliff-head to the great garrison of the Silver Banners.

The garrison lay across the Ridge of the Wind-Sieve, three leagues distant along a path of broken scree and jagged flints that was no wider than a bull’s tongue. On one side was the smooth basalt wall, and on the other side was the gulf where the gray kites make their nests among the bones of dropped goats. A man walking with great care might reach that camp between morning porridge and the setting of the red star; but if a runner hastened, the loose stones would slide beneath his soles like dry peas, casting him down into the fog. Moreover, the Reavers had set loose upon the path their three Running-Hounds—beasts with lungs of brass and nails of chipped flint that could smell the salt sweat of a fugitive three hills away.

Lord Ox-Spine looked upon the seventy stone-cutters whose tongues were swollen with thirst, and he rent his garment of sheepskin: “Who will carry the broken cylinder of jade to the General of the Nine Banners? He who runs by the road will be torn by the flint-hounds; he who runs by the stones will fall into the ditch; and he whose breath fails will be eaten by the crows!”

Then came forward an old hermit of the mountain terraces, an elder of the river-reeds whose skin was like the bark of a withered plum tree. He dwelt in a hollow willow tree by the drainage ditch, eating only boiled thistle seeds and sitting with his legs folded beneath his loins like a resting frog. Men called him Master Five-Vents, because he did not breathe through his nose like the cattle, but drew the wind into his middle belly with a small, dry whistling sound, so that his ribs did not swell, but his navel rose and fell like the bellows of a brass-caster.

Master Five-Vents took from his hemp-basket a narrow girdle woven of coarse mountain hemp and strips of flexible white reed cut from the edges of the frozen cascades. Across the front of this wrap, where the cord binds over the lower ocean of the flesh, he had bound five small hollow pipes carved from the pale jade of the riverbed. Each pipe had a mouth like an ear-syringe and a small slant hole upon its flank, sealed with the gummy tear of the stone-pine.

The hermit cast this sash around the loins of Ten-Paces-Wu and pulled the knot until the five jade beads pressed hard against the bone of his navel. The old man smote Wu upon the stomach with his knotted cane and hissed into his ear:

“You fool who pant like a dying dog! You breathe in your throat like a woman weeping for an onion; therefore your feet are heavy like lead plummets and your legs have no master! Close your teeth. Draw the sky down through your throat-gate into the pot beneath your belt. Let the breath dwell in the yellow courtyard of your middle belly. When you must leap, do not run with your knees; shout the word Hah! through the stones of your teeth, and let the jade pipes blow the road behind you!”

Wu looked down upon his belly, and behold, the five jade beads were cold like ice-pebbles against his skin. But as he drew his breath down past his collar-bones, the coldness changed into a sharp, sweet fire, like the burning of dried mint leaves upon a charcoal shovel. His hips felt light, as though they were hung from the cloud by a cord of raw silk, and the loose scree under his sandals seemed to flatten itself like a paved water-causeway.

Lord Ox-Spine gave into Wu’s hand the broken jade cylinder that called for the lancers, and Wu leaped from the postern gate into the gray mist of the ravine.

At that instant, the three Running-Hounds of the Reavers heard the click of his heel upon the gravel. They sprang up from the burnt barley-stubble with a roar like iron pots rattling together, their iron-shod nails tearing the moss from the rocks. They were thirty paces behind him, and the smell of their foul grease blew into his back.

Wu felt the fear rise into his throat, and he would have panted like a sheep, but the hemp wrap tightened about his middle like a copper hoop, holding the breath down within his belly. He shut his jaws; he drove his thought downward into the lower sea behind his navel; he expelled a sharp, hissing Hah! through his clenched teeth.

The ancient script of the third fragment says: “The five jade stones upon his belly did sing together like five swallows leaving the thatch. A pale blue wind sprang out from his loins, and his feet touched not the sharp flints, but the wind beneath the flints.”

In the space of one breath, Wu was twenty cubits down the narrow ledge. The loose stones rolled and clattered beneath his track, yet because the wind from the sash carried his center of mass like a floating seed, his soles did not slip, nor did the sharp gravel bite through his sandals. The first Running-Hound lunged with wide jaws to seize him by the tendon of his heel; but Wu did not turn his head; he drew in another draft of the cold mountain air, sank his posture by three fingers, and shouted his breath into his waist. The sash gave forth a sound like the snapping of an archer’s bowstring; Wu vanished from the hound’s eye, reappearing ten cubits ahead along the basalt ledge, while the hound’s iron-bound snout struck the naked cliff with such fury that its teeth were driven back into its brain-pan, and it tumbled end-over-end into the abyss.

Then the two remaining hounds bayed together and ran upon his flanks, bounding from crag to crag like gray grasshoppers. The path came unto the Place of the Broken Knee, where an earthquake in the grandfather-days had swallowed the mountain path for a distance of twenty-five cubits, leaving only a gulf of jagged fog where the winds from the lowlands met the gales from the snow-peaks in an angry whirlpool. A mountain sheep would have paused upon that brink; a running horse would have broken its chest against the rock.

Wu did not pause. He drew three swift, rolling breaths through the small passages of his nose, filling the five jade chambers until they hummed with a clear, organ-like chime. As his left sandal reached the final point of limestone, he flared his thighs and drove the air from his lower furnace through the flute-holes with an explosive shout that cracked the frost upon the bushes.

The translation of the clay tablet records: “His body went across the empty gulf like an iron bolt shot from a wall-engine. A path of white mist lay beneath his belly for three heartbeats, and the wind from the five pipes blew the fog into two curling horns behind his ears.”

He landed upon the far rim with a feather-soft sound, his feet sinking not an inch into the soft loam of the bank. The two Running-Hounds leaped blindly after him into the empty air; but they had no wind-sash upon their loins, nor knew they the discipline of the lower furnace; the cross-wind caught their heavy flanks like sails, turning them upside down, and they were dashed upon the sharp granite spires of the bottom, so that the crows made a great festival of their entrails.

Yet the road was not ended, for the chief of the Reavers, having seen from the watch-rock that the messenger had crossed the great gap, mounted upon his eight-winged hunting-glider—a thing of black ox-hide and whalebone ribs—and came plunging down the sky like a diving falcon. In his fist was a three-pronged spear of barbed bronze, and he dove with the sun behind his shoulder, seeking to pin the messenger to the flint trail before he could reach the camp of the Silver Banners.

The shadow of the great black wings fell over Wu like a burial cloth. The air grew cold with the wind of the descent. The spear was six spans from his neck-bone when Wu, remembering the words of Master Five-Vents, did not leap forward, but suddenly threw his breath into the rearward channel of his hip. Releasing the stored qi from the two flank beads, he executed the Feather-Step Pivot.

His body did not slide; it disappeared sidewise into the stone alcove of the cliff like a drop of water flicked from a brush. The Reaver’s barbed spear drove deep into the solid rock where Wu’s chest had been a fraction of an instant before, shivering the bronze shaft into three fragments. The glider, carrying the immense momentum of its dive, could not check its course against the stone; its wing-tips caught the rock-wall, tearing the ox-hide into black shreds, and the chief was cast headlong against the scree, where his skull was broken like a summer melon.

Wu did not tarry to take the chief’s gold armlet. He ran on through the heat of the noon-hour, his breath circulating in a smooth, continuous wheel between his navel and his heels, neither panting nor trembling, until he came before the iron gates of the camp of the Silver Banners.

When the sentries of the garrison saw him, they cried out in astonishment, for he did not come crawling upon his hands like a weary fugitive, but came bounding across the gravel like an antelope, with two streams of pale seafoam mist curling behind his hips, and his jade sash singing like a chime of temple bells in the breeze. He cast the broken jade cylinder at the feet of the General, and before the sun had moved the breadth of two fingers, four hundred iron-clad lancers rode forth upon the high road, falling upon the Reavers while they were yet setting their ladders against the limestone tower. Lord Ox-Spine was delivered from the fire, and the valley was cleared of the gray robbers for forty seasons.

When Lord Ox-Spine came down from the mountain, he fell upon his face before Wu and offered him seventy bags of white flour and thirty cows with brass horns, begging him to become the Master of the Ridge Runners. But Wu took only the three sour beer jars to wash the dust from his throat. He untied the hemp sash and gave it back to Master Five-Vents by the willow pool, saying:

“The sash is a swift horse, but it cannot eat the grass of the road; it must be fed with the breath of a quiet mind. When my belly was full of anger, I fell upon the flints; but when I made my belly into an empty hollow, the wind of the mountain carried me like an arrow.”

The old hermit took the sash, spat upon the jade beads to clear them of the gray sulfur dust, and hung it once more upon the spruce peg inside his hollow tree. And the carver of the cylinder-seal notes that although seventy kings have died in their stone beds since that planting, and the city of the High Escarpment has crumbled into red sand where sheep graze among the broken pillars, the wind that blows down the Ridge of the Wind-Sieve still makes a small, flute-like whistling when it passes the five stones of the stream, reminding those who walk upon the cliff that the legs are only the servants of the breath.

Moral of the story: He who seeks speed by straining his limbs and heaving his chest only exhausts his frame and stumbles upon the path; but he who drops his spirit into his lower center and moves in harmony with his breath will find that the earth shortens before his feet, and the steepest chasm becomes a level highway.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

Cincture of the Gale-Stride Pulse

  • Description & Lore: Woven from bleached mountain hemp and flexible strips of silver reed, this narrow waist wrap features five hollow, pale jade beads aligned along the navel.
