Pysanky 519 of the Zephyrs Dash

Lore

  • In the wind-scoured steppe valleys and elevated couriers’ posts of Saṃsāra, speed is considered both a sacred art and a vital lifeline.
  • Wayfarer messengers running the highland passes needed a light talisman to fend off leg-weariness and break into sudden, barrier-clearing bursts of speed without weighing down their dispatch packs.
  • An artisan of the High Pass Guild took an egg of the swift cliff-swallow, etching it by the light of pine-pitch lanterns with continuous geometric running braids, lightning teeth, and stylized wings using pure tallow-beeswax.
  • Dyed in swift succession with pale sky-blue, bright gorse-yellow, and vivid mountain-lichen viridian, the shell was drained and charged with pulverized Tier 1 magic crystal mixed with crushed swift-thistle pollen and sealed with a polished tin ring.
  • Novice couriers, scout apprentices, and light skirmishers carry these eggs at their waists or boot collars to slip past ambushes, leap sudden ravines, and sprint over broken scree.

Description

  • A small, aerodynamic cliff-swallow egg measuring roughly two inches in length, finished with a smooth, water-resistant eggshell lacquer.
  • It features brilliant, raised white wax lines forming sharp zigzag chevrons, interlocking runner tracks, and flared wing silhouettes over vibrant quadrants of sky-blue, bright gorse-yellow, and lichen green.
  • The upper pole is fitted with a lightweight, perforated tin collar pierced with directional air slits that whistle faintly when moved rapidly through the air.
  • The lower pole is reinforced with a tiny, needle-point tin fin that acts as a directional stabilizer.
  • The egg smells faintly of dry mountain clover, crushed pine needles, and static electricity, vibrating with a rapid, thrumming hum when gripped tightly.

Detailed Stats

  • Item Tier: Tier 1 (Common)
  • Gear Slot: Belt, Sash, or Boot-Lace Slot (anchored via a thin, braided hemp cord)
  • Item Hit Points: Avatar’s maximum Hit Points plus 10 (Resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 1)
  • Armor Check: 0
  • Weight: 0.25 pounds
  • Attunement: Simple attunement (requires sprinting until out of breath, then holding the egg against the throat or pulse point while catching one’s breath).

Passive Magic

  • Fleet Footfall: While worn, the egg lightens the bearer’s stride, granting a +1 passive bonus (or advantage) on checks made to maintain momentum, run long distances without exhausting, or sprint across loose scree and gravel.
  • Low-Drag Airfoil: The whistling vents create a subtle aerodynamic pocket around the bearer, increasing base overland running speed by 5 feet (or 1 meter) and ignoring the movement penalties of high winds.
  • Kinetic Reflex: The constant micro-vibrations heighten rapid reaction times, granting a +1 passive bonus to initiative or reflex-based reactions when an encounter begins with an open sprint or chase.

Activable Magic

  • Burst of the Zephyr: As a bonus action (or swift action), the user taps the perforated tin collar. The egg flares with a bright sky-blue flash, immediately allowing the user to take the Dash action for free and increasing their running speed by 10 feet until the end of the current turn. This ability can be used twice per day.
  • Wind-Skipping Leap: As part of a running jump, the user squeezes the egg to vent a concentrated gust of air downward. The user’s jump distance and height are doubled for that leap, and the user lands smoothly on their feet without taking impact damage. This ability can be used once per day.
  • Slipstream Surge: As a reaction when an enemy attempts an opportunity attack or moves to cut off an escape path, the user releases a compressed puff of static wind from the tin collar. The triggering enemy suffers disadvantage (or a penalty) on the attack, and the user moves up to 10 feet away without provoking further attacks. This ability can be used once per day.

    • Situated along narrow mountain switchbacks, windy ridge heads, and watch-tower passes, these functional stone lodges supply route runners, dispatch riders, and imperial messengers.
    • Stored in wall racks lined with dried cedar shavings and downy thistle wool to prevent jostling, the talisman is selected by young route runners seeking reliable leg-stamina across treacherous gravel slopes.
    • The retail price sits at a stable 18 to 22 silver coins, with registered guild runners and message apprentices receiving a standard 10% guild concession to purchase it for 16 to 20 silver coins.
    • Liquidating an ovoid here involves a runner testing the tin whistle collar with a quick puff of pipe-smoke to ensure the directional slits are unblocked, yielding 9 to 11 silver coins credited to the seller.
  • Steppe Caravanserais and Nomadic Tack-Makers
    • Found along open plains tracks, oasis crossings, and wandering yurt encampments, these bustling leather-and-felt tents cater to horse traders, outrider scouts, and caravan guards.
    • Hung from willow frames beside saddle girths, woven quivers, and oiled riding boots, the egg is purchased by outriders who need sudden bursts of foot-speed when forced to abandon a crippled mount.
    • The typical asking price runs between 20 to 26 silver coins (or barter of equivalent value in dried tallow, raw wool, or river-iron), with trusted herd-kin receiving an informal discount down to 18 to 23 silver coins.
    • Selling to a horse-trader brings a payout of 9 to 12 silver coins in loose silver cuttings or trade goods.
  • Lower-City Athletics Clothiers and Runner Boathouses
    • Operating out of drafty riverside warehouses and training arcades near city stadium gates, these establishments outfit messenger apprentices, boat-track haulers, and street couriers.
    • Kept behind brass wire mesh atop shelves of calfskin running slippers, rosin powder, and linen leg-wraps, the ovoid is bought by street urchins and guild novitiates striving to beat trial cut-offs or evade checkpoint guards.
    • Shopkeepers charge a competitive 22 to 28 silver coins, offering a slight markdown to 20 to 25 silver coins for local racing club members.
    • Fencing or selling an egg here yields 10 to 13 silver coins, provided the lacquer is free of cracks and the balance fin remains straight.
  • Frontier Outfitters and Wilderness Scavenger Posts
    • Set up at the edges of civilized roads, logging camps, and crumbling border stockades, these rough-timber trading posts supply trappers, skirmishers, and mountain wanderers.
    • Displayed under canvas awnings alongside snowshoes, climbing pitons, and horn whistles, the item is sought after by solo pathfinders needing to jump over ravine edges and slip through wilderness ambushes.

    • Selling the egg to a frontier factor returns 8 to 11 silver coins in hard coin or ammunition and trail-rations.

Tactical and Environmental Roleplay: Offensive and Defensive Deployments of Pysanky 519

  • Mountain Passes and Scree-Covered Ridge Slopes
    • Defensive Utilization: Scurrying across loose, shifting gravel along an exposed cliff trail under fire from mountain bandits, the courier relies on Fleet Footfall to keep absolute traction where any misstep means a plummet into the gorge. When a rockslide is triggered from above, the runner triggers Burst of the Zephyr, instantly accelerating through falling boulders to clear the slide zone before the path is wiped out.
    • Offensive Utilization: Ambushing highwaymen holed up on a higher terrace, the skirmisher uses Wind-Skipping Leap to launch off a lower boulder, catching a rising updraft to clear a 15-foot gap in a single bound. Landing silently behind the enemy lookouts without kicking loose stones, the courier strikes before the guards can shift their heavy bows toward the cliff’s edge.
  • Crowded Urban Slums and Cramped Alley Networks
    • Defensive Utilization: Fleeing a gang of city enforcers through tight, laundry-hung alleyways, the bearer uses Low-Drag Airfoil to cut through the heavy, stale air of the slums without losing stride. When cornered against a barricade of overturned carts, the runner squeezes the shell to trigger Wind-Skipping Leap, vaulting clean over the obstruction and landing on the opposite side to keep sprinting.
    • Offensive Utilization: Pursuing an escaping cutpurse through an outdoor fish market, the courier activates Burst of the Zephyr, slipping through closing pedestrian gaps with a sharp whistling hiss from the tin collar. As a rival thug steps from a side doorway with a club, the runner executes Slipstream Surge, blasting a puff of wind into the thug’s face to spoil the swing, slipping clean past his guard to tackle the primary quarry.
  • Open Grassland Steppes and Savannas
    • Defensive Utilization: Caught on foot in the vast, open plains by mounted horse-raiders, the courier activates Burst of the Zephyr to break line of sight toward a nearby dry gully. When a lancer charges in with a couch spear, the runner activates Slipstream Surge, deflecting the lance point with a sharp vortex of air and cutting laterally across the horse’s blind spot to break the mount’s charge momentum.
    • Offensive Utilization: Flanking a hostile scout encampment across wide-open turf, the avatar uses Low-Drag Airfoil to sprint silently against headwinds that would normally broadcast their heavy breathing. The bearer charges straight into the sentry perimeter, using the talisman’s sustained momentum to deliver a high-speed driving spear strike or flying tackle before the sentinels can untether their mounts.
  • Crumbling Forest Ruins and Overgrown Woodland Paths
    • Defensive Utilization: Navigating ancient flagstones choked with slippery moss, decaying tree trunks, and tangled briars, Fleet Footfall ensures the runner never trips or twists an ankle while escaping territorial predators. When an ambush predator pounces from a low-hanging bough, Slipstream Surge vents a blast of static air, throwing off the beast’s claws and propelling the runner safely out of reach into the underbrush.
    • Offensive Utilization: Engaging a band of goblin skirmishers scattered across high stone ruins, the runner triggers Burst of the Zephyr and Wind-Skipping Leap in rapid succession. The avatar bounds off broken pillars and over deep ravines, rapidly closing the distance to hostile slingers stationed on isolated pillars and cutting down their ranged superiority with sheer, unexpected mobility.

Perception of Activation:

  • The Five Senses: User’s Perspective
    • Sight: The raised white wax chevrons and stylized wing motifs flare with an electric, sky-blue radiance, while peripheral vision blurs into long, streaking speed-lines.
    • Sound: A sharp, high-pitched whistling hiss vents from the tin collar, accompanied by the rush of wind whipping past the ears like an incoming gale.
    • Smell: A crisp scent of dry mountain clover, crushed pine needles, and sharp ozone fills the nostrils with every inhalation.
    • Taste: The mouth takes on a clean, tingling tang of static electricity, akin to the metallic sharpness of air tasted immediately before a thunderstorm.
    • Touch: A weightless, tingling sensation shoots through the soles of the feet and calves, making the legs feel buoyant, effortless, and entirely free of fatigue.
  • The Five Senses: Observer’s Perspective
    • Sight: Observers see the small ovoid erupt in a bright cyan flash, trailed by spiral slipstream ribbons of distorted, refracting air wrapping around the runner’s limbs.
    • Sound: A sudden, whip-crack puff of displaced air sounds out, followed by a sustained, piercing flute-like tone as the bearer surges forward.
    • Smell: A brief, clean gust of pine-scented mountain air cuts through the ambient odors of the immediate area.
    • Taste: Those standing adjacent catch a lingering hint of dry mineral dust kicked up by the sudden rush of speed.
    • Touch: Anyone standing within arm’s reach feels a sudden, buffeting backdraft of cool air that rustles loose garments and hair.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions
    • Vector Intuition: The runner instinctively visualizes clear trajectory paths across broken ground, intuitively knowing the exact angle and foot-placement needed to rebound off walls, rocks, and obstacles without bleeding momentum.
    • Temporal Dilation: The user experiences a subtle expansion of subjective time, perceiving falling gravel, swinging blades, and reaching hands as moving in sluggish, predictable slow-motion.
    • Slipstream Wake: Mystically sensitive onlookers sense an airy vortex trailing behind the runner, resembling the phantom silhouette of an enormous diving cliff-swallow cleaving through ambient spiritual currents.
  • Positives
    • Delivers explosive, immediate acceleration that allows the bearer to break pursuit, reposition across long distances, or clear massive physical hazards in a split second.
    • Mitigates fall and impact damage by utilizing downward air cushions, ensuring surefooted landings even on shifting scree or sheer stone perches.
    • Disorganizes enemy lines by turning the user into an evasive blur that wastes hostile reactions and attacks of opportunity.
  • Negatives
    • The piercing whistle of the tin collar and the bright blue flare make covert, silent movement virtually impossible during activation.
    • Extreme velocity requires rapid, decisive maneuvering; overshooting a turn or misjudging narrow terrain can lead to high-speed collisions.
    • The sudden cessation of the slipstream leaves the runner’s lungs burning slightly from the abrupt return to normal atmospheric drag.

Crafting Recipe: Pysanky 519 of the Zephyr’s Dash

Materials Needed

  • 1 Wild Cliff-Swallow Egg (freshly gathered from high-altitude rock barrows, unbroken and uniform in shape).
  • 1 Tier 1 Magic Crystal (pulverized into an ultra-fine, azure-white kinetic dust).
  • 2 Ounces of Filtered High-Steppe Beeswax (melted with a pinch of powdered dammar resin for crisp linework).
  • 1 Ounce of Crushed Swift-Thistle Pollen (dry-sifted for charging internal air currents).
  • 2 Fl. Oz. of Pale Sky-Blue Mineral Dye (derived from pulverized azurite and mountain alum).
  • 2 Fl. Oz. of Bright Gorse-Yellow Dye (steeped from wild gorse blossoms and vinegar).
  • 2 Fl. Oz. of Lichen-Viridian Dye (rendered from copper patina and mountain rock-moss).
  • 1 Lathe-Spun Perforated Tin Collar (pierced with four directional aerodynamic slits).
  • 1 Needle-Point Tin Stabilizer Fin (balanced for polar grounding).
  • 2 Treated Vellum Washers (thin, oiled vellum gaskets to prevent air leakage).
  • 1 Fl. Oz. of High-Gloss Vitreous Lacquer (copal resin dissolved in pure grain spirit).
  • 1 Braided Hemp Suspension Cord (tightly twisted 3-ply cord, 16 inches in length).

Tools Required

  • 1 Fine-Tip Brass Kistka Stylus (0.3mm writing aperture for delicate geometric line application).
  • 1 Needle-Point Trephine Twist Drill (for boring balanced 1.5mm polar holes through brittle eggshell).
  • 1 Low-Smoke Alcohol Spirit Lamp (for steady, carbon-free wax heating).
  • 3 Cold Ceramic Dye Bowls (chilled to ambient alpine cellar temperatures to prevent shell fracturing).
  • 1 Micro-Syringe Blower (brass aspiration tube for evacuating albumen and injecting charged powder).
  • 1 Set of Watchmaker’s Brass Tweezers and Tin Crimping Pliers.
  • 1 Agate Mortar and Pestle (for powdering crystal and pollen without heat generation).

Skill Requirements

  • Crafting (Wax-Resist / Geometric Glyphs): Minimum Level 2 (for inscribing unbroken running tracks, chevrons, and wing silhouettes).
  • Leatherworking / Tinkering: Minimum Level 1 (for piercing directional acoustic vents and seating balanced polar collars).
  • Elemental Magic (Air / Kinetic Mobility): Minimum Level 1 (to bind wind currents and awaken the ovoid’s internal vortex).

Crafting Steps

  • Shell Evacuation and Base Preparation
    • Mount the cliff-swallow egg in a sand cradle; use the micro-drill to core a 1.5mm aperture at the pointed apex and a matching aperture at the base.
    • Insert the brass syringe to draw out the yolk and albumen completely, flushing the hollow interior with a lukewarm vinegar-and-salt solution until entirely clear of organic residue.
    • Set the shell on a drying rack in a dry, drafty room for 8 hours until completely desiccated.
  • Dye Infusion and Geometric Scribing
    • Heat the beeswax over the low-smoke spirit lamp, gathering molten wax into the 0.3mm brass kistka.
    • Trace the white wax baseline barriers: sharp running chevrons, interlocking track glyphs, and stylized wing silhouettes directly onto the raw, pale shell.
    • Dip the ovoid into the chilled sky-blue dye bath for 15 minutes; remove, pat dry with unbleached cotton, and wax over the zones meant to retain the bright azure hue.
    • Submerge the shell into the gorse-yellow bath for 20 minutes; allow to dry, then lay fresh wax lines over the geometric track fields to preserve the golden bands.
    • Lower the egg into the lichen-viridian crock for 25 minutes to stain the deepest exposed background panels a rich mountain-moss green.
  • Dewaxing and Lacquer Sealing
    • Warm the egg gently beside the spirit lamp flame, immediately wiping away the melting wax with soft linen to expose the clean, raised tri-color geometric relief.
    • Apply two thin, uniform coats of vitreous copal lacquer across the entire outer shell, allowing 4 hours between coats to achieve a hard, water-resistant aerodynamic finish.
  • Kinetic Charge and Internal Vortex Infusion
    • Grind the Tier 1 magic crystal into powder using the agate mortar, blending it thoroughly with the sifted swift-thistle pollen.
    • Feed the charged powder through the base aperture using the aspiration syringe until the central cavity is evenly lined.
    • Direct a continuous, warm breath into the apex hole while whispering the invocation of the mountain gale, exciting the interior dust until the shell produces a faint, resonant hum.
  • Fitting the Tin Vents and Final Assembly
    • Seat an oiled vellum washer over the apex aperture, placing the perforated tin collar over the top and securing it with waterproof resin.
    • Align the lower tin fin against the bottom aperture with the second washer, securing it flush with fine tin crimping pliers.
    • Verify that blowing across the directional slits produces a clear, flute-like whistle.
    • Thread the braided hemp cord through the collar loop, completing the creation by spinning the egg rapidly on its cord until it catches the ambient wind and stabilizes.

Feathered Round-Bone and Uncaught Courier of Ridge-Wind

Now it is written upon the flaked tablets of dried river-clay, dug up from the ditch of the city which was called High-Perch-Above-the-Scree, in the season when the seven great birds refused to land upon the earth because the rocks were too hot to touch. This is the telling of Oren, who ran without leaving a track in the gravel, and the Small Shell of the Cliff-Swallow which carried the breath of the mountain storm inside its belly.

In those years, the lords of the great ridge were seven, and each lord sat within a tower of chipped shale. Between the towers there was no peace, only the rolling of great round stones down the hillsides to crush the cattle of the others, and the setting of fire-pots into the dry thistle bushes. The highest of these towers belonged to Lord Vane, whose beard was like iron wire and whose knees were thick and swollen from eating too much fat sheep-meat. Because his knees could not bend, he could not run, and because he could not run, he hated any man whose legs moved swiftly.

Lord Vane maintained three hundred warriors who carried long ash poles tipped with hooked iron, called Leg-Catchers. It was their office to run behind the poor people of the slopes, catching their heels with the iron hooks, so that all men in that land walked with a dragging step, leaning upon hazel crutches.

In the village of Split-Rock, which clung to the side of the great drop like an eagle’s scrape, there lived a youth named Oren. He was an orphan of the couriers who carried salt over the high glaciers. When he walked, his feet made only a little whisper, like dry rye grass in a light breeze. He had observed the cliff-swallows where they nest beneath the overhang of the red cliffs, how they turn upon one wing-tip when the hawk dives, making the hawk strike only the bare rock and break its beak.

There came a day when the iron-bearded lord looked down from his window of horn and saw a rider upon a black horse coming across the distant gravel flats. The rider blew three blasts upon an ox-horn: HOO-RAH-HOO. It was the sign that the mountain was shaking in its sleep, and that a wall of white mud and stones would pour down the gorge before the moon had turned her white cheek to the stars. The horse of the messenger fell dead in the ditch, its heart having burst with the running.

Lord Vane cried out from his high bench: Who shall run to the lower valleys to tell the stone-cutters to close the water-gates? For if the water-gates be not closed, the white mud will choke the canal, and my barges of silver and fat oil will be drowned beneath the silt. But none of his three hundred hook-bearers would go, for they were heavy with iron breastplates, and they feared that the mud would take them by the ankles.

Oren stepped out from the crowd of limping men. He had no coat of mail, nor leather gaiters, but only a sash of coarse goat-wool. He said: Give to me the bronze signet that the gate-keepers may know the word is true, and I will outrun the falling of the mountain.

The lord laughed with a sound like two flat stones striking together. He cast the heavy bronze signet into the dirt at Oren’s feet and said: If you are not at the lower weir before the shadow of the horn-tower touches the third cairn, my hook-men will drag you back by the heels and feed your joints to the swine.

Oren did not start upon the road at once, for he knew that flesh cannot race against the mountain when it vomits stone. He climbed instead up the wet face of the overhang, where the cliff-swallows make their pots of gray loam. In the highest nest, where the air smells of frozen snow and ancient feathers, he found an egg. It was very small, like the thumb-joint of a girl, but it was not soft; it was hard like mountain quartz, and it hummed between his palms like a bee caught in a wicker basket.

He brought the shell down to the cell of the old dyer, Mother Vassa, whose fingers were stained with blue copper-rust. She took the small bone-pen which is fed with the wax of mountain bees. Upon the shell she traced the lines of the running braid, which has no knot, and the sharp tooth of the thunder-spark, and the shape of the swallow’s wing when it cuts through the middle of the cloud.

When the wax was set hard, she dipped the egg into the water of the sky-stone, and it became blue like the ice in the deep crevices. Then she drew more lines of wax, and dipped it into the brew of the yellow gorse-flower, which grows only where the goats cannot climb. A third time she marked it, and plunged it into the green moss-vat that is kept cold beneath the cellar floor.

When she held the egg near the embers of pine-knot to let the tallow weep away, the white bone of the shell stood up sharp and high between the colors, like the ribs of a winter deer against the snow.

Oren took a tiny awl of beaten copper. He drilled a hole in the pointed crown, and another in the rounded seat. With a hollow straw of wild rye, he drew out the inner moisture, which was clear like mountain water, and he blew into the hollow room the dust of an azure star-stone that had fallen upon the ice-fields three winters before, mixed with the yellow dust of the swift-thistle.

At the top, the tinker of Split-Rock bound it with a collar of beaten tin, pierced with four narrow eye-slits. At the bottom, he soldered a small blade of tin, no wider than the claw of a martin, to keep it true against the wind. When Oren shook it, the egg whistled like a child blowing across the mouth of a clay flute: PHEE-WOO.

He hung the egg from his hempen sash by a three-strand braid of nettle-twine. He stooped, took up the bronze seal of the lord, and set his heel against the verge of the trail.

The drummer upon the horn-tower struck the bronze basin: CLANG. The shadow of the wall was already leaning toward the first cairn.

Oren ran. At the third step, his breath became sweet like clover, and his sandals ceased to strike the earth with a slapping sound; they whispered: tsst-tsst-tsst. The egg at his sash began to turn upon its cord. The four slits in the tin collar caught the mountain wind and screamed like an eagle descending upon a marmot.

A great roaring began behind him in the clouds. The mountain cracked its teeth; a gray froth of earth and broken fir trees poured into the neck of the pass, moving faster than an arrow shot from a yew bow. The rolling boulders struck the path behind him, throwing sparks of fire, but whenever a stone would clip his shoulder, a sudden puff of cold air burst from the tiny tin slits, turning his body aside like a dried leaf that dodges the hoof of an ox.

He came to the narrow shelf called the Goat’s Terror, where the rock had fallen into the abyss, leaving a void of twenty cubits where nothing hung except the empty blue air. The hook-men of Lord Vane, who were watching from the lower terraces, cried out: He is broken! He must stop and die!

Oren did not shorten his stride. He pressed the palm of his hand against the swallow-egg until the tin collar cut into his skin. He leaped from the broken edge into the open sky.

Those who watched from below swore upon the hearth-stones that a cloud shaped like two blue wings took him beneath his armpits. A whistle like forty pipes sounded through the valley. He did not fall; he skimmed across the chasm like a flat stone thrown upon a pond, touching the opposite rock with the ball of one foot and bounding forward without a single grain of dust falling into the chasm.

The shadow of the horn-tower was creeping toward the third cairn. The dust of the mountain’s anger was already darkening the sun.

At the water-gates, the stone-cutters were eating their noon cakes of barley, suspecting nothing. Suddenly there was a whistling in the high brush, a smell of ozone and crushed pine needles, and a youth stood among them upon the masonry. His face was pale, his eyes were wide and filled with the reflection of the sky, and from his belt there hung a small egg that spun so rapidly upon its cord that it looked like a ball of blue fire surrounded by four spinning stars.

He struck the table with the bronze signet: The mud is in the throat of the mountain! Drop the oak beams!

The stone-cutters cut the hempen cables. The three great gates of seasoned oak fell into their grooves: THUD-THUD-THUD. Scarcely had the third bolt seated itself in the stone sockets when the great wave of mud and broken stone crashed against the timber, piling sixty cubits high, but the canal remained clear, and the people of the lower meadows were not drowned.

When the dust had settled, the people looked for Oren to give him a bowl of honey and milk and a garland of wild celery. But he was not there. The wind which was inside the egg would not suffer him to sit down upon a bench. He had already turned toward the open steppe, his feet barely brushing the tops of the flowering grasses, running onward toward the places where there are no towers and no lords with iron hooks.

It is recorded that the egg, which was numbered five-hundred and nineteen in the register of the pass-scribes, was found many ages later upon the high plains, hanging from the branch of an ancient juniper tree. It was still turning, and when the north wind blew down from the snow-caps, the tin collar whistled three notes, telling any traveler who had ears to hear that the earth is too wide for a man to spend his days standing still.

Moral of the Story: The heavy walls of the tyrant and the anger of the falling mountain are mighty, but they are prisoners of their own weight; he who carries the light heart of the swallow and knows when to cast away his burdens may leap over the widest abyss, leaving the slow to be swallowed by their own stones.

  • Item Profile: A small, vibrant blue-and-yellow swallow egg inscribed with white wax chevrons and wing motifs, fitted with a whistling tin collar and lower stabilizer fin. Smells of pine needles and thunderstorm air.
  • Item Quality: 2 Quality. (If subjected to a heavy direct impact, crushing weapon damage, or a catastrophic fall check, the fragile egg cracks, destroying its enchantments).
  • Fleet Footfall (Passive): The bearer gains advantage on all Dexterity and Strength saving throws made to sprint across loose scree, maintain footing on slick surfaces, or run long distances without becoming fatigued.
  • Low-Drag Airfoil (Passive): The bearer’s overland and tactical running speed increases by 10 feet per round, ignoring movement penalties from adverse winds or loose rubble.
  • Kinetic Reflex (Passive): The bearer gains advantage on initiative rolls whenever a battle begins with an active sprint, pursuit, or evasion.
  • Burst of the Zephyr: Twice per day as an action or free movement boost, the user taps the tin collar to trigger an immediate, free sprint at double base speed.
  • Wind-Skipping Leap: Once per day, the bearer can activate the ovoid during a running jump to double their leap distance and land completely unharmed from any drop under 30 feet.
  • Slipstream Surge: Once per day as a reaction when targeted by an enemy melee attack while moving, the bearer releases a blast of pressurized wind from the collar. The attacking enemy suffers disadvantage on the attack roll, and the bearer instantly disengages 10 feet away without provoking an attack.

  • Low-Drag Airfoil (Passive): Ambient wind resistance and difficult terrain caused by loose gravel or headwinds never hinder your movement or require an overcome roll to traverse at a dead sprint.
  • Kinetic Reflex (Passive): You gain +2 on Notice rolls to determine turn order when an exchange begins with a chase, sprint, or sudden evasion.
  • Burst of the Zephyr (Stunt): Twice per session, you can invoke your Whistling Vessel of High-Steppe Momentum aspect without spending a Fate point to move an extra zone for free during an exchange, even if you take another action.
  • Wind-Skipping Leap (Stunt): Once per session, you can bypass an entire zone of physical barriers, chasms, or hazards by making an Athletics leap, clearing the gap effortlessly without creating a risk of harm on a tie or failure.
  • Slipstream Surge (Stunt): Once per session, when an opponent attacks you while you are moving through their zone, you may immediately declare a defense roll with Athletics at +2. If you succeed, you generate the boost Gone on the Wind and immediately move one zone away.

  • Effect (Burst of the Zephyr): As an action, the user taps the collar to vent a compressed blast of wind. The user moves a long distance (up to 100 feet) as part of the action, or moves a short distance (50 feet) and performs a non-movement action in the same turn.
  • Effect (Wind-Skipping Leap): As part of a jump, the user triggers a downward pneumatic cushion, doubling their jumping distance and height while landing completely safely, suffering zero impact or falling damage from falls up to 30 feet.
  • Effect (Slipstream Surge): As an immediate Speed reaction when targeted by a physical attack while running, the user expels an air buffer. The attack against the user is hindered by two steps, and the user immediately slips 10 feet away into open terrain.
