Lore
- Engineered in the high-culture architectural ateliers and optical academies of Saṃsāra, this delicate facial apparatus treats beauty not as a subjective luxury, but as an applied science of vibrational harmonic alignment. Scholars of psionic mechanics recognized that authentic aesthetic mastery—balance, color symmetry, structural golden ratios, and flawless craftsmanship—generates a subtle psychokinetic cohesion within matter. The Prismatic Monocle was designed to calibrate the wearer’s sensory conduits to this hidden order. Cast from iridescent speculum electrum, framed with micro-geared iris loupes, and mounting a multifaceted lens of genuine celestial ametrine, the monocle captures the psychic resonance of fine art, sublime landscape, and architectural perfection, allowing the wearer to perceive structural stress lines, invisible illusions, and the raw emotional imprint woven into masterwork creations.

Activable Magics
- Unveil the Flaw: As a bonus action, the wearer adjusts the monocle’s primary loupe to filter out mundane light and view an active magical effect, illusion, or physical disguise within 30 feet. The lens illuminates the subtle discordance of the deception in sharp chromatic fractures, granting the avatar an immediate Perception or Insight check with a +5 bonus to pierce the illusion or reveal the disguised creature’s true form. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the wearer completes a short rest.
- Resonant Critique: As an action, the wearer focuses on a single target, structure, or creature within 30 feet, broadcasting a focused micro-psychokinetic frequency calibrated to the target’s physical imbalance or aesthetic asymmetry. The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (or equivalent defense roll) or suffer 1d6 psychic-concussive damage and become Vulnerable or Off-Guard to the next physical attack made against it before the end of the round. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the wearer finishes a short or long rest.
- Gaze of Sublimity: As an action, the wearer locks gaze with a humanoid or sapient beast within 15 feet and discharges the stored chromatic energy of the ametrine core. A wave of awe and captivating visual majesty washes into the target’s mind. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (or mental resistance check) or become mesmerized and incapacitated by beauty for 1 minute, unable to take hostile actions while staring in peaceful wonder. The effect ends immediately if the target takes damage or is jostled. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the wearer finishes a long rest.

Tactical and Environmental Roleplay Applications of Psionic 814 of the Prismatic Monocle
- Grand Ballrooms, High-Society Salons, and Diplomatic Galleries
- Defensive Roleplay: Amidst swirling silk gowns, masked dignitaries, and murmured court intrigue, the avatar uses the monocle’s passive perceptual filters to navigate veiled threats. When an assassin posing as a visiting noble approaches, the avatar activates Unveil the Flaw to see through their magical disguise, catching the chromatic flickering of an illusion spell overlaid upon poisoned daggers. The passive Cadence of Poise ensures the avatar remains immune to disorienting sensory spells or sensory flash-powders set off by conspirators.
- Offensive Roleplay: During tense social cross-examinations, the avatar locks gaze with a treacherous diplomat and deploys Gaze of Sublimity. The target becomes utterly transfixed by an overwhelming psionic wave of aesthetic awe, halting their deceitful speech mid-sentence and leaving them wide-eyed and incapacitated while allies secure incriminating correspondence from their person.
- Ancient Ruined Temples, Classical Sanctuaries, and Vaulted Mausoleums
- Defensive Roleplay: Navigating decaying architecture laden with collapse triggers, the avatar’s Structural Elegance reveals stress fractures in ancient load-bearing columns. When a stone gargoyle or trapped ceiling slab is rigged to drop, the avatar spots the unnatural balance point and warns the party away before the trigger can be depressed.
- Offensive Roleplay: Facing an animated stone guardian, marble construct, or heavy iron automaton, the avatar studies the entity for a moment to pinpoint a microscopic fracture in its joint-work. Activating Resonant Critique, the avatar projects a focused harmonic frequency directly into the flaw, cracking the stone with concussive psychic force and leaving the construct off-guard for an ally’s crushing hammer strike.
- Illusionist Sanctums, Mirrored Labyrinths, and Faerie Glades
- Defensive Roleplay: When caught in a hall of mirrors or a shifting phantasm where duplicate images and distorted corridors bewilder the senses, the avatar turns the micro-geared loupe. Unveil the Flaw instantly reveals the true physical corridor by highlighting the false walls in jarring, discordant chromatic fractures, allowing the party to march straight through phantom walls without falling into underlying pits.
- Offensive Roleplay: When an enemy spellcaster uses illusory duplicates to misdirect attacks, the avatar snaps their gaze directly to the caster’s real body, ignoring the phantasms. The avatar uses Resonant Critique against the caster’s concentrated mental flow, disrupting their aesthetic cadence with a sharp acoustic rattle that shatters their concentration and leaves them exposed to immediate physical retaliation.
- Dense Natural Formations, Crystal Caverns, and Geode Chasms
- Defensive Roleplay: While traversing cavernous depths lined with sharp crystalline formations and reflective pools, the avatar uses Eye for Harmony to detect unstable stalactites vibrating at dangerous ambient frequencies. The lens filters out the dazzling glare of luminescent moss and reflective minerals, preserving the avatar’s night vision against sudden flares of blinding natural luminescence.
- Offensive Roleplay: Confronted by an apex subterranean predator sporting a chitinous, reflective carapace, the avatar analyzes the creature’s gait and armor plating. Spotting an irregular gap where the plates rub together during a pounce, the avatar channels Resonant Critique, causing the predator’s own harmonic vibration to reverberate painfully through its shell, throwing it off balance just as a frontline ally engages.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective
- Visual Field Transformation: The monocular view through the ametrine lens sharpens into hyper-focus. Color saturation intensifies, rendering dull stone and woodwork in vivid, layered palettes. Objects of artificial deception or hidden structural fatigue fracture visually into jagged, vibrating chromatic seams of discordant neon violet and yellow, instantly distinguishing them from natural matter.
- Somatosensory and Neural Feedback: A cool, tingling pulse spreads across the left temple and down the ear-cuff as the electrum conduits engage. The user’s optic nerve experiences a mild, refreshing chill—comparable to mint dissolved in spring water—clearing away eye strain, mental clutter, and sensory fatigue.
- Auditory Modulation: Ambient noise drops into a subdued harmonic hum. Whispers, footfalls, and mechanical clicks are subtly sorted by acoustic harmony; grating, deceptive, or dissonant sounds ring out with a sharp, glass-like chime, alerting the mind to falsehoods or imminent structural collapses.
- Analytical Euphoria: A profound sense of composure and elevated discernment washes through the intellect, creating a calm detachment that makes chaotic combat scenes or intricate social confrontations feel as readable as a masterfully drawn blueprint.
- Observer’s Perspective
- Chromatic Lens Flare: The deep purple and golden halves of the ametrine core ignite with an internal prismatic fire. A slow, iridescent rainbow ring rotates within the crystal, projecting tiny dancing prisms of amber, lavender, and rose light across the wearer’s cheekbone, collar, and temple.
- Mechanical Movement: The three micro-geared iris loupes along the electrum brow-arm click forward and spin with a faint, insectoid metallic tick, adjusting focal depth automatically as the user’s gaze shifts across targets.
- Wearer’s Demeanor: The avatar’s posture visibly aligns with absolute poise; their chin lifts slightly, blinking slows, and their gaze takes on a penetrating, unnervingly analytical intensity that feels as though it is appraising the onlooker’s very worth.
- Multiple Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- Harmonic Aura Sight: The avatar perceives the living psychic geometry of nearby beings. Healthy, truthful creatures emanate smooth, concentric rings of pastel resonance, while deceitful minds, diseased tissue, and illusions manifest as jagged, sputtering geometric halos with mismatched frequencies.
- Structural Stress Sight: Solid surfaces—walls, vaults, armor joints, and stone lintels—display their internal tension vectors as glowing threads of gold and purple light. The weakest load-bearing points and fracture planes pulse rhythmically like exposed veins.
- Psionic/Resonant Sensing: Sensitive minds and telepaths in the vicinity feel a gentle, crystalline chime brush across their mental periphery, followed by the crisp sensation of looking through freshly cut mountain glass.
- Positives
- Flawless Deception Piercing: Instantly strips the veil from mundane disguises, forged signatures, hidden wall seams, and layered magical phantasms without touching the target.
- Pinpoint Weakness Identification: Exposes structural failure points in masonry, locks, and armored carapaces, allowing strikes to bypass resilience with calculated precision.
- Sensory Insulation: The harmonizing matrix actively shields the brain against blinding pyrotechnics, chaotic auditory blasts, and disorienting sensory magic.
- Negatives
- Binocular Disparity: Processing hyper-detailed chromatic geometry through one eye while the other sees mundane light can cause mild spatial dissonance or temporary headaches during sustained use.
- Visible Chromatic Beacon: The glowing prism flares and projecting pastel lights make the user instantly recognizable in low light, making stealth operations virtually impossible while the lens is active.
- Aesthetic Vulnerability: Looking directly upon horrific, grotesque, or deliberately discordant cosmic entities while the lens is calibrated for perfect harmony can trigger a sharp wave of mental revulsion or psychic nausea.
Recipe: Fabrication of the Harmonized Prismatic Monocle
Materials Needed
- One raw oval nodule of celestial ametrine possessing a crisp, natural division between golden citrine and royal amethyst, free of interior clouding.
- One Tier 1 magic crystal catalyst, precisely the mass and diameter of a standard minted coin, harvested from an adult magical entity.
- Two ounces of refined speculum-electrum foil (a high-reflectivity alloy of pure gold, silver, and refined tin).
- Three yards of drawn, hair-fine acoustic platinum micro-wire for winding the harmonic brow coils and ear-cuff ground.
- Twelve miniature precision-toothed electrum watchmaker’s cogwheels and three concentric brass iris loupe rings.
- Two fluid ounces of clear botanical spirit extracted with a fluid collector from night-blooming prismatic lotuses or high-terrace gardenia.
- One fluid ounce of fluid distillate collected via fluid collector from the vitreous humor or glandular secretions of an eagle-owl, chimera-hawk, or visual apex stalker to act as an optical-polarity binder.
- One sacrificial masterwork jeweler’s loupe, artist’s viewing glass, or gilded spectacles frame, melted down in the crucible to impart its structural lineage of observation.
Tools Required
- Standard fluid collector fitted with a micro-suction needle and graduated collector vial.
- Lapidary faceting rig with copper cutting laps, diamond-grit paste, and cerium oxide polishing rouge.
- Watchmaker’s miniature lathe, micro-tweezers, and jeweler’s screwdrivers.
- Platinum-welding spirit torch and heat-reflecting ceramic block.
- Acoustic quartz tuning fork calibrated to an octave of harmonic light.
- Chasing tools, planishing stakes, and curved burnishers for electrum foil.
Skill Requirements
- Gemcutting / Lapidary Arts: Skill Level 5 or higher.
- Precision Jewel-Crafting / Fine Mechanics: Skill Level 5 or higher.
- Alchemical Distillation: Skill Level 5 or higher.
- Relevant Trained Crafting Skill matching the Tier of the end result: Minimum Level 1 in Psionic Apparatus Crafting.
Crafting Steps
- Distill and clarify the optical resin matrix:
- Employ the fluid collector to harvest two fluid ounces of clear spirit from the night-blooming prismatic lotus.
- Draw one fluid ounce of vitreous fluid distillate from the visual apex stalker using the micro-suction needle.
- Blend both reagents within an alchemical vial over a low-burning blue spirit flame, stirring with an electrum stylus.
- Reduce until the liquid achieves the clarity of pure mountain water and a viscous, glass-like consistency that bonds precious metal to crystalline minerals without leaving residue.
- Shape and facet the celestial ametrine lens:
- Mount the raw ametrine nodule upon the dop stick, orienting the color seam so the boundary between amethyst and citrine intersects the exact horizontal midline of the visual field.
- Cut the gem into a balanced oval lens using the copper lap charged with fine diamond grit.
- Polish both optical faces using cerium oxide rouge to an 8k mirror sheen, ensuring the facets along the outer bevel direct light directly toward the center of the pupil.
- Cast and construct the speculum-electrum frame and articulated ear-cuff:
- Melt the sacrificial viewing glass and refined speculum-electrum in a ceramic crucible under the platinum torch.
- Draw the metal into thin, rigid rim-stock, bending the frame to seat the beveled ametrine lens.
- Form the contoured ear-cuff and counterweighted temple-arm, shaping the metal to match the natural curvature of an avatar’s ear cartilage.
- Burnish the outer edges with chasing tools to eliminate sharp burrs and provide a satin, pale-lavender luster.
- Assemble the micro-geared iris loupe assembly:
- Mount the twelve micro-geared cogs onto the upper brow-arm using the watchmaker’s lathe and jeweler’s screwdrivers.
- Link the gears to the three concentric iris rings, ensuring smooth mechanical rotation that expands and contracts the secondary filtering apertures across the top edge of the lens.
- Coat the miniature gear pins with a drop of clarified optical resin to eliminate mechanical friction.
- Wire the platinum harmonic conduits and seat the catalyst:
- Draw the platinum wire through micro-dies until it reaches hair-fine diameter.
- Braid three platinum strands into a micro-cable, routing it from the brow-gears across the temple-arm to terminate directly within the ear-cuff.
- Grind the Tier 1 magic crystal catalyst down to a razor-thin ring using the lapidary wheel.
- Seat the catalyst ring into the interior groove of the electrum bezel, lining the contact point with a drop of the optical binder.
- Press the faceted ametrine lens into the bezel over the catalyst ring, burnishing the electrum bezel prongs inward to lock the crystal firmly against the magic-conducting seat.
- Execute harmonic psionic calibration:
- Strike the acoustic quartz tuning fork and hold its vibrating stem against the platinum ear-cuff terminal.
- As the platinum micro-wires begin to vibrate with a high-pitched glass chime, look through the ametrine lens at an intricate, balanced geometric drawing or masterwork painting.
- Focus mental attention entirely on the golden ratios, symmetry, and harmonic elegance of the image until the lens flashes with a self-sustaining chromatic rainbow.
- Once the violet and gold hues fuse seamlessly in the visual field and projecting pastel flares appear on the work surface, the resonance loop has stabilized.
Pale-Gold Eye-Ring of Master Kaelen Who Did Break False Stone With a Look
Hearken unto the brittle goatskin roll found in the sunken cistern of Mar-Ghul, which the scribes of the copper towers did turn into the common speech when three parts of the words were already eaten by the salt-lice. In the age when the high roofs were held up by pillars of yellow soapstone, the kings of that country were swollen with the pride of fatness. They did make their dwellings not with the compass and the water-plumb of truth, but with the plaster of deceit, painting over the cracked mud with crushed pearls and the grease of spotted cows, so that all men cried: “Behold, the walls of the great house are like unto the thrones of the stars.”
In the city of seven terraces walked Master Kaelen, whose skull was not shaped like the skulls of the brick-heavers. He was a stone-cutter of the small tools, but his hands were idle because he could not bear the look of an uneven doorpost. When a mason did lay a lintel that was crooked by half a barleycorn, Kaelen did spit into the ditch and take to his pallet with a burning belly, for the ugliness of the crooked line did bite into his brain-pan like an adder. The grandees called him a star-sick beggar who would starve because he would not carve fat idols for the oil-sellers.
Kaelen went into the dry canyon where the blue rivers had died before the flood of grease. He sat upon a seat of black slate and took from his pouch a nodule of rock-glass that was half like the grape-must when it turneth to vinegar and half like the oil of the wild sun-flower. He did not ask the priests to blow sheep-gall upon it; he did take the speculum-tin that fell from an ancient broken carriage of the sky-wanderers and did beat it into an eye-hoop with a hammer of green porphyry. He wound twelve small teeth of brass upon its brow like the legs of a grasshopper, and he bound the wire of white-copper behind his ear-lobe with the glue of the lake-lily and the water drawn from the eye of a dead hawk.
The dry skin of the roll saith: “He did not shut both his eyes to pray to the wind; he did open the glass eye against the bright noon and set his thought upon the circle that hath no corner.”
In those seasons, the Usurper Voran did sit upon the throne of the Red Terrace. He wore a mantle woven of spider-silk and had commanded the grand architect to raise the Great Arch of Concordance, three hundred cubits high, out of the red porphyry of the desert. The grandees fell upon their faces before the arch, singing: “Lo, it shall stand until the sun turneth into a cold pebble, for it is built upon the holy geometry of the ancestors!” Voran caused a great crown of brass-gold to be set upon his brow, and his tongue did utter laws that broke the backs of the water-carriers.
On the day of the feast of the eighth bull, Kaelen stood among the sheep-shearers at the bottom of the terrace. He had bound the pale-gold loop to his left temple, and the wire of white-copper did hang upon his ear like a dry vine.
He looked up at the king upon the terrace, and he looked upon the Great Arch that was praised by the five colleges of priests.
Kaelen twisted the small grasshopper-teeth upon the eye-hoop: “Zzzt-tik.”
The tablet of Mar-Ghul recordeth a strange wonder of the optical marrow: The purple part of the rock-glass and the yellow part did run together like hot honey, and a round rainbow did spit little arrows of rose-smoke across his temple. To the crowd of the unwashed, the Arch was solid like the belly of a mountain. But unto the glass eye of Kaelen, the deceit of the architect was laid bare like the white maggots under a wet log. He saw that the red porphyry was only a shell of two fingers’ thickness, glued with fish-lime over rotten loam and dried river-silt, and that the middle keystone was balanced not upon the square of the plumb, but rested upon a crooked timber of rotten cedar that was already bending like an old knee.
Kaelen climbed upon the low wall where the beggars sold dried radishes. He did not cry with an angry voice, nor did he draw an iron dagger. He did only lift his chin, and the glass eye did flame like an oil-lamp dropped into water.
He spoke toward the high seat: “O King who weareth the false brass, why dost thou seat thy majesty beneath an arch whose marrow is goat-dung and crooked wood? The line is false by four fingers, and the stone weepeth with the shame of its unbalance!”
The priests took up heavy river-stones to break his teeth, and the soldiers of the spear did rush down the broad steps. But Kaelen stood with his arms folded into his woollen kirtle. He directed the gaze of the amethyst-sun straight into the center of the middle keystone, where the bad joint did ache in the dark plaster. He breathed a single breath of the mind-pressure—a little shiver of the psionic stone-thought that was tuned to the hatred of crooked things.
A noise went through the air like the singing of a wet glass rim when a finger rubbeth it: “Huuuum-prak!”
The rot inside the stone answered to the clean chime of the glass. A line of blue fire, thin as a hair, ran down the face of the Great Arch. The grandees stayed their feet; the king opened his mouth, but his breath did not come back. With a great roar like the falling of a gravel-cliff into the sea, the keystone split in twain, not from a blow of an engine, but because it could no longer hold its lie against the pure look of the eye-glass. Three thousand tons of rotten loam, painted red tile, and brittle cedar poured down upon the throne of the Usurper, burying his spider-silk mantle and his brass crown beneath forty cubits of common ditch-rubble.
Kaelen stood in the white dust-cloud. His eye-glass was cool, glowing with the lavender light of the early dusk, and not a single chipped tile fell upon his sandals.
He turned his face away from the ruined terrace and went into the wilderness of the western hills, and for forty years he went through the kingdoms of the clay-builders. Where there was a false measure, he touched the weight with his eye and the lead fell out of the bottom; where an adulterer swore an oath of pure milk, his glass did show the black bile running in the veins of his neck; and when the kings sought to build towers that reached to the wandering stars, they sent five mules laden with silver to his cave, praying that he would bring his speculum-glass to tell them if their foundations were straight in the sight of the true circle.
Moral of the story: The lie that is painted with gold may deceive ten thousand eyes of mud, but before the gaze that is tempered to the divine measure of beauty, the false pillar cannot stand, for every unlovely thing is the seed of its own ruin.

The attacker must make a Wisdom save; on a failure, it loses its action, transfixed by the jewel’s prismatic glow. When Quality reaches 0, the ametrine lens fractures into clouded glass.
