Lore
- During the early infrastructure expansion across Saṃsāra, psionic engineers required instruments capable of mapping the subtle psychic signatures of unfamiliar environments, alien flora, and foreign cognitive fields without triggering bio-psychic rejection. Developed by the Communion Surveyors, this broad silver-inlaid iron cuff utilizes crystalline lapis lazuli conduits to modulate the wearer’s neural frequency. Rather than dominating or shielding against ambient mental currents, the bracer gently harmonizes the wearer’s personal psionic rhythm to mirror their surroundings. This constant sympathetic calibration produces an instinctive, magnetic affinity between the avatar and whatever system, creature, or element they consciously choose to understand, turning mutual familiarity into an applied science.

When the wearer establishes a mutual psychic rapport, the pyrite flecks inside the lapis emit a soft, ember-like golden twinkle that mirrors the emotional tempo of the synchronized target.
Skills Gained While Openly Worn
- +1 Perception or Insight (Temporary skill point)
- +1 Diplomacy or Nature (Temporary skill point)
Passive Magics
- Sympathetic Resonance: The bracer continuously hums at an imperceptible neural frequency that aligns with local life forms. The avatar gains advantage on checks made to establish rapport, communicate non-verbally, or de-escalate territorial aggression when interacting with beasts, spirits, or cultures with whom they share no common spoken language.
- Biome Familiarity: By remaining within a distinct biome, microclimate, or architectural ecosystem for at least 1 hour, the wearer absorbs its background psionic baseline. The avatar ignores minor natural environmental penalties (such as moving through dense underbrush, navigating natural fog, or sensing sudden natural weather shifts).
- Kinship Indicator: The pyrite flecks within the lapis stone react to the presence of creatures or objects that share an inherent harmonic frequency with the wearer (such as allied avatars, familiar constructs, or compatible psionic materials), softly glowing within 30 feet to confirm mutual alignment.
Activable Magics
- Attuned Rapport: As an action, the wearer focuses on a single willing or neutral creature within 30 feet, rotating the rim dials to match its mental rhythm. For 10 minutes, the wearer and the target can communicate telepathically across distances up to 60 feet. While this bond persists, both participants gain a +1 bonus on coordinated skill checks made together. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the wearer completes a short rest.
- Elemental Affinity Pulse: As a bonus action, the wearer taps the lapis cabochon while touching a natural substance (such as earth, flowing water, wood, or stone). For 1 minute, the wearer gains resistance to a damage type naturally associated with that medium (cold from ice/water, acid from swamp mud, or bludgeoning from solid rock) up to a maximum absorption of 5 total damage before the attunement dissipates. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the wearer completes a short rest.
- Borrowed Instinct: As a reaction when an attuned ally within 30 feet makes a saving throw or ability check, the wearer can tap into their shared mental link to grant the ally advantage on that roll by feeding them instinctive clarity. In doing so, the wearer suffers a -1 penalty on their own next d20 roll from brief neural feedback. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the wearer finishes a long rest.

Gentle chimes resonate as customers enter, and the environment carries a faint aroma of orange oil polish, crushed chalk, and dry mineral dust.
- Purchasing Mechanics: Customers meet one-on-one with a lapidary artisan or psionic jeweler across a low glass display case. The merchant demonstrates the piece by resting a hand near the buyer’s wrist, showing how the pyrite flecks ignite when harmonic pulse sync occurs. Payment is accepted in minted silver coinage, high-grade gemstone roughs, or trade credits.
- Selling Mechanics: The lapidary inspects the purity of the lapis matrix through a magnification loupe, ensuring no artificial dyes or synthetic resins were used to secure the stone. They test the silver inlay channels for electrical and psionic conductivity before issuing an offer in minted currency or jewelry credits.
- Pricing: The retail cost in a fine salon is 150 silver coins due to custom sizing and presentation. An avatar selling an intact, well-polished piece to a high-end lapidary receives between 110 and 125 silver coins depending on the luster of the pyrite inclusions and the condition of the wool lining.
Tactical and Environmental Roleplay Applications of Psionic 742 of the Resonant Attunement
- Primeval Rainforests, Overgrown Jungles, and Mangrove Swamps
- Defensive Roleplay: As the expedition pushes through choking, mosquito-laden bogs, the avatar kneels and buries a hand into the silt, activating Elemental Affinity Pulse to harmonize with the acidic swamp muck. As caustic vapors or poisonous spit from amphibious predators splash across the front line, the bracer absorbs the corrosive sting. Simultaneously, the passive Biome Familiarity allows the avatar to intuitively guide allies past treacherous sinkholes and thorned brush without snagging armor or losing footing.
- Offensive Roleplay: Tracking an elusive jungle predator through heavy canopy cover, the avatar uses Sympathetic Resonance to read the ambient baseline of the canopy fauna. By noting where bird cries and insect hums abruptly drop into silence, the avatar pinpoints the predator’s ambush branch. The avatar then triggers Attuned Rapport with the party’s rogue, quietly relaying the predator’s exact blind spots through telepathy to set up a coordinated crossfire before the creature can pounce.
- Subterranean Deep Roads, Sunken Mines, and Crystal Caverns
- Defensive Roleplay: While trekking through unstable tunnels threatened by cave-ins and falling stalactites, the avatar presses the iron bracer against the stone wall. Drawing upon Elemental Affinity Pulse, the avatar establishes resonance with the rock face, shrugging off the crushing impact of falling rock debris. When a tremor strikes, the avatar triggers Borrowed Instinct as a reaction, instantly broadcasting spatial awareness to a stumbling rear-guard ally so they throw themselves clear of a collapsing ledge.
- Offensive Roleplay: Encountering blind, echo-sensitive subterranean beasts or territorial burrowers, the avatar avoids drawing steel. Instead, using Sympathetic Resonance, the avatar projects a soothing, earth-synchronous neural pulse through the iron rim dials, convincing the creatures that the party is an inert part of the cavern’s natural ecology. This allows the party to maneuver past defensive chokepoints or maneuver into lethal flanking positions while the quarry remains completely docile.
- Windswept Steppes, Open Savannas, and Arid Salt Flats
- Defensive Roleplay: Under the relentless glare of the noon sun and baking thermal winds, the avatar relies on Biome Familiarity to pace the party’s respiration and water conservation, sensing incoming dust devils and heat microbursts minutes before they sweep across the flats. When approached by a charging pack of predatory plains hounds, the avatar raises the bracer, using Soothing Demeanor and Sympathetic Resonance to mirror the alpha’s posture, neutralizing the pack’s predatory drive into cautious curiosity.
- Offensive Roleplay: During a mounted cavalry skirmish or chariot pursuit, the avatar establishes Attuned Rapport with their mount or the lead scout. Sharing thoughts at the speed of instinct, the avatar executes split-second directional cuts and simultaneous volleys, coordinating lance charges or ranged arrow spreads with flawless, wordless synchronization that breaks the enemy outriders’ formation.
- Crowded Cosmopolitan Bazaars, Embassies, and Urban Guildhalls
- Defensive Roleplay: Amidst the sensory chaos of a grand trade bazaar filled with exotic non-human species, unfamiliar dialects, and tense merchant guards, the avatar’s bracer quietly reads the local baseline. When a foreign envoy or suspicious mercenary bristles with xenophobic alarm, the avatar speaks through non-verbal micro-gestures bolstered by Sympathetic Resonance, calming elevated heart rates and diffusing hostility before weapons are drawn.
- Offensive Roleplay: During high-stakes trade negotiations or tense criminal parleys, the avatar uses Kinship Indicator to identify undercover confederates or disguised psionic operatives in the crowd whose frequencies match the local syndicate. Operating under Attuned Rapport with the party’s primary negotiator, the avatar serves as a silent mental advisor, whispering hidden motives, shifting conversational tactics in real time, and guiding counter-offers that dismantle the rival faction’s leverage.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective
- Somatosensory and Galvanic Sensation: The moment alignment is initiated, the felted wool lining warms noticeably against the forearm. A crisp, tingling current—resembling the static charge before a summer storm—travels from the silver dials along the radial artery, tingling upward through the elbow and settling into the base of the skull.
- Autonomic Calibration: The wearer experiences a profound sensation of settling weight. The ambient mental pressure of unfamiliar surroundings dissolves; the breathing tempo involuntarily syncs with the dominant rhythm of the environment, whether that is the slow, grinding stillness of a mountain cavern or the rapid, bustling cadence of an urban market.
- Auditory Modulation: Extraneous environmental noise sharpens into structured layers. Distant animal calls, echoing footfalls, or the rustle of wind through high branches cease to be background clutter, instead separating into distinct, recognizable acoustic signatures that sound clean and harmonized.
- Olfactory and Gustatory Phantasm: A faint, clean taste of cold spring water or morning dew coats the palate, accompanied by the dry, mineral scent of crushed slate and rain-slicked earth.
- Observer’s Perspective
- Mineral Luminescence: The deep indigo field of the lapis lazuli cabochon deepens in hue, while the embedded pyrite flecks ignite with an internal, golden stellar shimmer. As the wearer attunes to an ally or medium, this golden light pulses in smooth, rhythmic swells that mirror the wearer’s pulse.
- Micro-Mechanical Motion: The fine silver filigree tracks on the iron face seem to subtly vibrate, throwing faint specular glints across the brushed metal as the internal contact pins adjust along the wrist.
- Postural Shift: The wearer’s movements lose hesitation and awkwardness. Their stride naturally matches the uneven contours of the terrain, and their physical posture unconsciously mirrors the stance or body language of the creature or ally with whom they are conversing.
- Multiple Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- Biome Neural Baseline: The avatar perceives the surrounding environment as a wide, vibrating tapestry of low-frequency psionic chords. Dense foliage registers as a damp, green hum; running water feels like a cool, swift current along the skin; and deep subterranean bedrock broadcasts a heavy, comforting drone that anchors spatial orientation.
- Sympathetic Harmonic Threads: Attuned creatures appear connected to the avatar by shimmering, pale-gold filaments of thought. These threads thrum with real-time feedback, intuitively telegraphing the target’s balance, immediate physical intentions, and micro-shifts in focus without a single word exchanged.
- Kinship Magnetism: When an entity or object of matching frequency enters within range, the avatar feels a gentle, directional pull behind the breastbone, like a compass needle swinging smoothly toward a magnetic pole, accompanied by a soft mental chime.
- Positives
- Instinctive Fluency: Eliminates conversational and social friction across cultural, linguistic, and inter-species barriers by translating raw physical intent into mutual understanding.
- Tactical Synchronicity: Enables flawless telepathic coordination and instant split-second warnings between allies without revealing tactical plans to eavesdroppers or ambient observers.
- Environmental Immunity: Dampens natural terrain hazards and absorbs sudden elemental shocks by grounding the avatar’s physical form directly into the ambient baseline.
- Negatives
- Neural Resonance Recoil: Providing instinctive insight or sharing protective mental bonds forces the wearer to absorb brief sympathetic back-pressure, causing momentary mental fatigue or sensory disorientation.
- Sensory Permeability: In areas plagued by intense environmental corruption, ambient psychic violence, or screaming crowds, the bracer’s open baseline can cause intrusive, distracting sensory bleeding if not carefully dialed down.
- Conspicuous Starlight: The bright, shimmering glow of the pyrite flecks within the lapis core reveals the wearer’s location and active concentration in pitch darkness or covert operations.
Recipe: Artifice of the Resonant Attunement Vambrace
Materials Needed
- One solid billet of low-impurity bog iron (approximately 12 ounces).
- One domed, tumbled cabochon of deep azure lapis lazuli densely seeded with natural brassy-gold pyrite flecks (approximately 25–30 mm in diameter), free from structural fissures.
- Three yards of high-purity sterling silver wire (drawn in both medium inlay gauge and hair-thin contact gauge).
- One Tier 1 magic crystal catalyst, identical in diameter and thickness to a standard minted silver trade coin, harvested from an adult resonant or psychically active creature.
- Four square inches of natural, unbleached felted lamb’s wool cloth (2 mm thickness) to form the inner shock-absorbing dermis liner.
- Two small turn-pins and milled threaded collars of sterling silver to serve as the radial calibration dials.
- Two fluid ounces of distilled pine-pitch resin mixed with pulverized mountain quartz dust to act as a conductive jewel-bed cement.
- One fluid ounce of organic fluid distillate collected via a fluid collector from the cerebrospinal or salivary fluids of a communal pack beast (such as an elk matriarch, plains wolf scout, or herd sentinel) to serve as a neural attunement flux.
Tools Required
- Standard smith’s forge, charcoal hearth, light anvil, and cross-peen shaping hammer.
- Jeweler’s wire-drawing block, draw-tongs, and fine-point steel gravers.
- Lapidary cabochon-grinding wheel, hand dop-sticks, and jeweler’s rouge polishing cloth.

- Hardwood wrist-mandrel with graduated circumference markers.
- Standard fluid collector fitted with a micro-suction needle and graduated glass collection vial.
- High-frequency acoustic brass tuning fork calibrated to the ambient harmonic resonance of unworked bedrock.
Skill Requirements
- Blacksmithing / Armory Artifice: Skill Level 5 or higher.
- Lapidary / Gem-Setting Arts: Skill Level 5 or higher.
- Fine Inlay / Silversmithing: Skill Level 5 or higher.
- Psionic Artifice / Bio-Resonance Engineering: Minimum Level 1 in Psionic Field Calibration matching the Tier 1 item outcome.
Crafting Steps
- Forge and contour the iron bracer frame:
- Heat the bog iron billet to cherry red over the charcoal forge and hammer it out into a uniform plate 4 inches wide and 6 inches long, maintaining a consistent 2-millimeter thickness.
- Use the cross-peen hammer and hardwood wrist-mandrel to work the plate into a tapering ergonomic forearm curve that seats snugly above the wrist without binding the ulna or radius.
- Quench the curved iron shell in cold spring water, clean the scale, and buff the exterior surface to a smooth, non-reflective matte gunmetal finish.
- Channel and seat the silver conductive inlays:
- Mount the cold iron shell onto a jeweler’s pitch block.
- Use the steel gravers to carve three parallel undulating tracks across the dorsal face of the bracer, cutting sharp undercut dovetails into the iron.
- Anneal the medium-gauge sterling silver wire and hammer-peen it firmly into the dovetailed tracks until flush with the iron surface.
- Cut a raised circular socket seat directly in the center of the three converging silver lines to house the lapis cabochon assembly.
- Fabricate and align the radial contact dials:
- Drill two micro-apertures through the ventral rim of the bracer, aligned directly over the path of the wearer’s radial artery.
- Tap threads into the holes and install the two milled sterling silver turn-pins and adjustment dials.
- Thread hair-fine silver micro-filaments from the base of the turn-pins across the interior face of the bracer, creating a conductive arterial pickup mesh that terminates inside the central gem socket.
- Prepare the core catalyst and lapis cabochon:
- Grind the lapis lazuli rough on the lapidary wheel into a smooth, high-domed oval cabochon, orienting the cut so that the densest clusters of pyrite flecks face outward.
- Polish the dome with jeweler’s rouge until it exhibits a deep mirror luster.
- Split the Tier 1 magic crystal catalyst with a fine lapidary saw into a flat conductive wafer.
- Coat the bottom of the central socket with pine-pitch resin mixed with crushed quartz, seat the catalyst wafer flat inside, and moisten it with two drops of the organic pack-beast fluid distillate to prime bio-psychic conductivity.
- Seat the lapis lazuli cabochon over the catalyst and burnish the silver bezel rim inward to lock the stone securely against the socket housing.
- Line and buffer the interior shell:
- Cut the felted lamb’s wool to match the interior dimensions of the iron bracer, piercing micro-punctures to allow the silver arterial pickup mesh to sit flush with the skin.
- Affix the wool lining to the interior surface using cured pine resin, rolling the outer edges over the rim to protect the wearer from chafing.
- Harmonic tuning and neural calibration:
- Strike the brass tuning fork against natural bedrock or dense unworked stone and touch the vibrating stem directly to the central silver bezel of the bracer.
- While the frame vibrates, slide the vambrace onto the forearm, tighten the silver radial turn-pins until the felt presses firmly against the pulse point, and breathe in rhythmic unison with the hum.
- Focus benevolent mental intent toward the surrounding environment, holding the concentration until the acoustic hum ceases and the pyrite specks within the lapis lazuli flash with a soft, synchronized golden twinkle.
Iron Sleeve-Band of Surveyor Kael Who Did Make His Arm Speak with Mountain-Root and Blue-Horned Herd
Thus run the lines scratched upon the wet river-slate of the sunken gorge of Bel-Ham, which the priests of the seventh flood did turn upside down because they mistook the drawing of an iron wrist for the sign of an ox-plow, and did write “to become brother unto a ditch” where the speech of the first walkers did mean “the turning of the blood-wire until the head tasteth the stone.”
Before the stars did turn their backs upon the northern valleys, the surveyors of the Iron Path were sent forth by the high architects to draw lines across the wilderness. In that age, the land was not tame. The woods had teeth, the gray silt was sour, and the great blue-horned bison of the scrub-plains did stomp the survey-stakes into splintered fire-kindling, for they knew not the purpose of the measuring-chain and did take the white rods of the surveyors for the lances of raiders.
Among the markers of roads was a young man named Kael. He carried not a great cleaver nor a whistling bow, but only the heavy staff of sighting and a skin of oil for the screws. His companions were men of iron grease and rough tongues, who did curse the mountain when it blew hail upon their bread, and did shoot iron darts into the hides of the blue-horned calves that came sniffing around the baggage-sledges.
“The beast is a lump of fat and bad temper,” spake the foreman, whose teeth were broken from hard biscuits. “If it looketh upon thy wooden wheel with an evil eye, cast salt into its ears and break its snout with a lever.”
Now, it came to pass that the surveying line reached the Razor-Spur, where the red rock goeth up like an axe turned toward the sky. There did dwell the Gray-Nose herd, whose great bull had shoulders wide as three carts and horns that could split an oak axle in twain. When the workmen did strike their iron wedges into the rock to mount the brass sight-rings, the mountain did shake its skin. Loose boulders rolled like bread-loaves down upon the sledges, crushing two dray-oxen, and the great bull came down through the dwarf-pines, bellowing with such a terrible wind that the surveyors fled into the holes of the foxes, leaving their porridge to freeze in the kettle.
Kael sat in the cold shadow of an overturned dray-cart. His right wrist was bruised from a tumbling shale-stone. He took from his kit a curved plate of bog-iron that had been forged to brace a broken wheel-hub. With his skin-paring knife, he did dig three little furrows along the back of the iron, and from the broken plumb-line he took three strands of hair-fine silver wire. He did beat the silver into the iron channels with the smooth river-pebble, for he said in his thoughts: “The iron is of the mountain’s belly, and the silver is the cold vein that runneth through its marrow; why should my flesh make war upon that which was here before my grandfather took breath?”
At the middle of the band, where the lines met like the tracks of birds at a water-pool, he fixed a nodule of deep blue rock which he had washed from the gravel of the creek. It was blue like the sky before the rain-cloud breaketh, full of little yellow sparks that the mountain-washers call false-gold. He lined the inside of the sleeve-band with the fleece of a spring-born lamb that had died in the snow, and he did set two little pegs of silver against the side that lay over his thumb-pulse.
The slate of Bel-Ham saith: “He did twist the silver ears until the stone upon his meat did hum like the little bee that sleepeth in the thyme.”
When the dawn was white like cold lard, Kael arose from the wagon-track. He carried no cudgel, neither did he bind leather over his ribs. He walked up the scree toward the high ledge where the Gray-Nose bull stood blowing white steam through his black snout.
The foreman screamed from under a flat stone: “Come back, thou pudding-headed boy, or the bull will pick thy liver out upon his forehead!”
Kael turned the little screw of the wrist-band until the wool pressed tight against his vein. The slate-text recordeth the strangeness of that morning: “The marrow of his elbow did become as cold as spring-well water. The yellow dust inside the blue bead did wake like ants when honey is spilt upon their mound.”
As Kael stepped upon the loose shale, his feet did not slip. The text saith he felt the sliding of the stone not as an enemy that pulleth down, but as an old nurse that shifteth her hip. The tremor of the cliff entered through the iron of the bracer and went up into his brain-box as a soft voice that whispered: “Step upon the red slab, for the gray slab hath water rotting beneath its foot.”
The great bull turned its wet nostrils upon him. It lowered its horns, which were scarred with the moss of thirty winters, and did tear the frost-grass with its broad black hooves, preparing to drive Kael through the sky.
Kael did not run. He did not lift his hands to make a great shout. He knelt upon his right knee and laid the iron vambrace flat against the frozen rock. With his left thumb, he moved the silver contact-dial two notches to the sun-ward side.
Unto the sight of the frightened men shivering in the scrub-pine below, a spark of yellow light did dance across the blue pebble upon his wrist, leaping like a flea from the lapis into the moss beneath his knee. The bull stopped. The steam ceased to hiss from its nostrils. It lifted its square head, and its eyes, which had been red like hot iron, became clear and deep like dark grease.
The tablet of Bel-Ham recordeth: “The man’s pulse did beat into the stone, and the stone did give the same pulse into the hoof of the four-legged father. They did breathe together like two calves sharing one manger.”
Kael felt in his own chest the great, heavy ache of the bull’s old age—the throb of a rusted iron spear-point buried deep in its shoulder-fat by raiders seven summers past, the thirst for the high sweet water that had dried from the glacier, and the terror of the gray worms that eat the calves in the bitter months.
Through the blue stone, Kael did not send a chain. He sent only the quiet thought of the survey-party’s barley-sacks, and the picture of a road that would curve wide around the herd’s grazing-swale, leaving their salt-lick untouched by the iron-wheel carts.
The great beast walked forward, four paces, slow as a sliding haystack. It bowed its neck until its wet muzzle pressed against Kael’s breast-wool. It blew a warm, grass-scented wind into the surveyor’s hair, and with its black horn it nudged the iron band upon his wrist, as a hound greeteth the child who shareth his crust.
Kael stood up. The bull walked beside him along the razor-ledge, showing him where the rock was thick and where the hollow shale hid the bottomless drop. The foreman and the workers came out from their holes with open mouths, their knives shaking in their belts, while Kael pointed his staff, and the herd of eighty bison stood upon the rim, chewing their cud in peace as the road-stakes were driven into the turf.
The tablet saith that when the great road was finished through the gap, no beast of the scrub was ever slain by an iron bolt, for Kael did leave his sleeve-band hanging upon a pine-stump at the border of the pass, where any scout might put his arm through the iron loop and know which mountain-cleft had water, and which herd of beasts was ready to walk beside men as kin.
Moral of the story: He who approacheth the strange world with a sword in his fist will find every stone turned to a shield and every beast to a butcher; but he who hath the patience to tune the beating of his own heart to the rhythm of the mountain shall discover that there are no strangers under the sun, only companions whose speech his ear was too proud to understand.

- Borrowed Instinct: When an ally linked to you via Attuned Rapport within 30 feet makes a saving throw or ability check, you can use your reaction to grant them advantage on that roll by channeling quick instinctive focus. You take a -1 penalty to the next d20 roll you make before the end of your next turn. Once used, this property cannot be used again until you finish a long rest.
Knave (2nd Edition)
Surveyor’s Attunement Cuff
- Description: An iron vambrace with runic silver wires and an eye of blue lapis stone holding brassy star-flecks. It allows a traveler to adapt to strange wildlands and link minds with an ally.
- Item Slots: 1 Gear Slot (Worn on the forearm)
- Durability: 3 Quality / Usage dots
- Wild Harmony (Passive): You have advantage on Charisma checks to parley with non-speaking monsters, foreign wanderers, or wild beasts without aggression.
- Terrain Sense (Passive): After traveling 1 watch through wilderness or caverns, you and your party ignore movement delays from mud, tangled roots, or scree.
- Attuned Rapport (Active): Once per day as an action, turn the silver pins to link minds with a companion in sight. For 1 turn (10 minutes), you may whisper thoughts to each other within 60 feet, and both take advantage on coordinated physical maneuvers.
- Elemental Shell (Active): Once per day as an action, touch stone, soil, or river water. The cuff absorbs the next 4 points of damage you would take from falling stone, crushing weight, or drowning cold before the attunement fades.
- Borrowed Instinct (Reaction): When a linked ally is about to take damage from a trap or enemy strike, mark 1 Quality dot on the cuff to grant them an immediate reroll on their saving throw. You take a -2 penalty to your next check from neural shock. If Quality drops to 0, the lapis cabochon turns dull grey and ceases functioning until restored by a silversmith.
