Lore
- In the island nation of Yayoi and across the judicial wards of major central cities, criminal acts leave lingering ripples of spiritual residue, biological matter, and emotional dissonance that mundane city watches often miss.
- Reincarnated investigators who remembered ancient Japanese divination paired the five-phase elemental teachings of Onmyodo with forensic observation to develop tools capable of reading crimes directly from physical evidence.
- Numbered 19 in an official issue created for municipal magistrates and court inquisitors, this specialized magnifying glass was designed to expose hidden blood splatters, forged entries in physical logs, and spiritual residues left by perpetrators.
- By aligning the five elemental phases with the movements of the gas giant VaporSphere and the star Helios, the loupe reveals the sequence of past violent actions, bridging spiritual shamanism with systematic criminal investigation.
Description
- The item is a handheld circular magnifying loupe measuring seven inches from its handle base to the brass lens frame, with a viewing lens three inches in diameter.
- The handle is crafted from deep-grained ironwood wrapped in five braided metallic wires that represent the cyclical transformation of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
- Embedded directly into the base of the ironwood handle is a tier 1 magic crystal ground down to the exact size and weight of a standard silver coin, glowing with an internal, cool azure light.
- The optical glass is ground from pure quartz crystal, delicately inscribed along its outer bevel with five-phase Onmyodo trigrams and celestial coordinates that rotate when aligned with daylight.
- When brought within six inches of a crime scene surface, pool of blood, or tampered lock, the lens faintly hums, illuminating the subject with a pale, ultraviolet glow that highlights latent biological traces and psychic impressions.

Activable Magics
- Trigram Scene Reconstruction: By spending one action to align the loupe’s lens with the position of Helios and speaking a somatic incantation of fewer than six seconds, the user invokes a localized illusion of the past. The lens projects floating, pale golden silhouette specters that re-enact the last thirty seconds of physical movement that occurred within a five-foot radius during the previous twenty-four hours, revealing the physical stance, vector of approach, and weapon trajectory of an assailant.
- Talismanic Guilt Resonance: By spending one action to peer through the loupe while pointing it directly at an interrogated suspect within fifteen feet, the user activates an astrological five-phase ward. If the subject actively lies regarding a specific crime committed within the past week, the subject’s spiritual aura fluctuates violently, projecting a deep violet mist visible through the lens to the investigator and imposing disadvantage on all social deception checks made by the suspect for the next ten minutes.
- Footprint of the Five Phases: By touching the frame of the loupe to an identified footprint or surface residue as an action, the user channels elemental alignment to trace the perpetrator’s escape path. For the next hour, glowing elemental footprints corresponding to the target’s dominant elemental resonance light up along the floor or ground for up to two hundred yards, even if the tracks have been washed by rain or obscured by mud.

Criminological Implement Exchanges and Investigative Boutiques
- Judicial Supply Shops and Magisterial Apothecaries:
- Located within civic justice quarters, courthouse alleyways, and imperial constabulary districts of major metropolitan centers, these shops cater directly to town watches, royal inquisitors, and independent investigators.
- The interiors are lined with locked glass cabinets containing fingerprint powders, fluid extraction syringes, wax impression kits, lead-lined evidence jars, and anatomical charts detailing both mortal and monster physiologies.
- When purchasing from a licensed judicial supplier, the standard baseline price for the loupe is typically listed at 10 silver, though because of the prevailing sellers’ market and the scarcity of ground optical quartz, the tag frequently fluctuates between 10 silver and 15 silver.
- An avatar holding active membership in a civic watch faction, Scriveners’ Guild, or judicial administrative board receives the standard 10% discount per character tier level, reducing the cost of this tier 1 tool by 1 silver, bringing the final price to 9 silver.
- Selling the loupe to an official supplier results in an immediate examination of the brass casing and lens bevel; the shopkeeper haggles at 10% of the item’s baseline value times the selling avatar’s tier level, offering 1 silver, which is recorded in the merchant’s quasi-logs before the currency is credited to the character’s World Bank ledger.
- Independent Optical Guilds and Lapidary Workshops:
- Situated along the craft canals, clockmaker plazas, and lens-grinding avenues in prominent manufacturing towns, these family-run workshops focus on precision glasswork, sextants, spectacles, and brass-geared surveying instruments.
- The workshops are filled with the scent of lubricating oils, stone-cutting slurry, wooden grinding wheels, and velvet-lined display drawers showcasing crystalline lenses ground from mountain quartz.
- These artisans maintain a limited stock of forensic loupes for scholarly customers and private detectives, pricing the instrument between 10 silver and 13 silver depending on the clarity of the embedded azure crystal.
- Artisans possessing recognized training in lapidary crafting or an allied guild can apply their 10% faction reduction per character tier level, securing the loupe across the counter for 9 silver.
- When selling the item to an optical craftsman, the merchant assesses the integrity of the five-phase metal wires and the quartz lens, paying 1 silver into the seller’s World Bank account while logging the transaction for routine municipal tax inspection.
- Underworld Pawn Vaults and Smuggler Salvage Dens:
- Established in hidden basements, abandoned dockside tunnels, and shadowed taverns near seaport wharves where contraband slips past gate patrols, these illicit brokers deal in unregistered gear, confiscated watch equipment, and salvage taken from fallen avatars.
- These clandestine stalls keep no written ledgers, completely bypass imperial tax assessors, and refuse transactions conducted through the World Bank, demanding physical coin for all exchanges.
- Buying a forensic loupe from an underworld fence commands full retail cost or higher due to strong demand among criminal syndicates seeking to detect counter-surveillance traces or verify the purity of stolen gemstones, resulting in an inflated cost between 15 silver and 25 silver in physical coin.
- Selling the loupe to an underground fence yields physical silver directly into the avatar’s purse without municipal questions or identity logging; the broker offers between 1 silver and 2 silver in raw coin, paying closer to the 2 silver limit if a rogue burglar urgently needs an optical tool to inspect vault tumblers and bypass mechanical traps.
Roleplay and Tactical Deployments of the Forensic Diviner’s Loupe
- Urban Murder Scenes and Royal Manors:
- In the gaslit cobblestone alleys or gilded residential manors of island capitals where noble assassinations threaten political stability, the loupe is an essential defensive ward against misdirection. Defensively, when corrupt town watch captains attempt to pin a murder on a scapegoat by staging fabricated evidence, the investigator brings the quartz glass within inches of the crime scene floorboards. Activating the passive forensic luminescence illuminates washed-out cyan blood splatters that lead away from the framed suspect toward the true egress window. Projecting this undeniable ultraviolet evidence in front of assembled magistrates completely dismantles the false charges before wrongful arrests or executions occur.
- For offensive social confrontations and interrogation inside grand drawing rooms, the investigator turns the loupe toward a nervous courtier suspected of poisoning an heir. Peering through the five-phase trigram bevel while asking pointed questions triggers the Talismanic Guilt Resonance. As the suspect speaks falsehoods, a thick violet mist visibly billows from their silhouette, discernible to the examiner. The investigator weaponizes these chromatic tells to press deeper, systematically breaking down the poisoner’s alibi, exposing their lies, and forcing an outright confession before their aristocratic patrons can intervene.
- Subterranean Mining Tunnels and Under-City Vaults:
- In pitch-black subterranean delve-ways and deep mineral vaults where saboteurs operate in darkness, the loupe provides tactical defensive security. Defensively, when the party moves through mined shafts laced with tripwires, alchemical deadfalls, or hair-trigger pressure plates, the investigator peers through the lens to detect tampering abrasions. The glass highlights chipped mortar, scuffed stone, and wire tension channels in a distinct orange glow, allowing the party to identify and bypass lethal ambushes or structural collapses engineered by rival syndicates.
- Offensively, when hunting an outlaw band through branching mine networks, the user invokes the Footprint of the Five Phases by touching the brass frame to a scuffed stone sill. The loupe awakens elemental tracking paths that glow vibrantly across the dark cavern floor, cutting through coal dust, standing water, and deliberate attempts to sweep the trail clean. The investigator guides the strike team directly to the thieves’ hidden redoubt, denying the quarry any opportunity to set up defensive barricades or ambush the advancing party.
- Saltwater Docks and Coastal Smuggler Basins:
- Amidst the damp wharves, rotting pilings, and fog-drenched shipholds of maritime border ports, physical traces wash away quickly in the ocean spray. Defensively, when a ship’s captain claims a cargo hold was broken into by oceanic monsters rather than internal mutineers, the investigator sweeps the hatch seals with the loupe. The lens isolates tool marks and lever scratches from genuine claw damage, confirming whether an insurance fraud scheme is being staged and protecting maritime insurance guilds from extortionate payouts.
- Offensively, during a dockside chase against a fleeing fence who dumped stolen alchemical vials into the harbor, the investigator activates the Trigram Scene Reconstruction along the pier. A thirty-second golden silhouette specter plays out across the wet planks, projecting the exact angle, hand posture, and physical vector the suspect used to throw the contraband into the water. This precise trajectory allows allied divers to recover the sunken evidence immediately, securing the physical proof required to secure an arrest warrant.
- Frontier Wilderness and Caravan Transit Camps:
- In the untamed border lands between island provinces where caravan camps are vulnerable to midnight raids and wild beasts, the loupe serves as a vital defensive diagnostic. Defensively, when sentries are found incapacitated or livestock are slaughtered without sound, the avatar holds the loupe over the wounds. The Mind’s Eye Trait Focus instantly identifies whether the lacerations were inflicted by beast fangs, enchanted blades, or poisoned hunting arrows, revealing the exact time of the assault and preventing the caravan from wasting time guarding against the wrong threat.
- Offensively, when pursuing raiders who have retreated into dense brush or rocky gorges, the investigator touches the loupe to discarded clothing or blood drops left on thorny briars. The elemental footprints ignite like lanterns across grass and gravel, exposing the raiders’ path of retreat, revealing where their horses were picketed, and letting the party execute a synchronized counter-strike against the raiders’ camp before they can mount a coordinated defense.
- Airborne Skyships and Floating Spire Docks:
- Aboard high-altitude passenger cruisers and mooring docks where high winds blow away mundane physical clues, the loupe prevents catastrophic sabotage. Defensively, if a skyship’s lift-engine suffers a sudden pressure drop, the investigator brings the lens to the boiler casing and steering linkages. The loupe illuminates micro-abrasions and residue from acid vials in glowing orange outlines, isolating deliberately severed copper lines and letting engineers weld the critical breaches before the airship loses buoyancy.
- Offensively, during an aerial mutiny, the investigator sweeps the bridge floor using the Trigram Scene Reconstruction. The lens projects translucent golden silhouettes of the crew members who were standing near the rudder controls moments before the navigator was thrown overboard. Identifying the mutineer ringleader’s distinct uniform emblems in the ghostly replay allows the loyal crew to bypass deceptive claims of innocence and disarm the traitor captain directly.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective:
- Sight: Looking through the quartz lens, the user sees ambient daylight refract into a cool, concentrated beam of pale ultraviolet illumination. Obscured, dried, or scrubbed biological residues flare in brilliant luminescent cyan, while tool marks, scratched lock tumblers, and forged script ignite in a distinct neon-orange outline. When scene reconstruction is invoked, life-sized, translucent golden silhouettes re-enact recent violent struggles directly within the viewing field.
- Sound: At the moment the activation takes hold, the user hears a delicate, rhythmic chiming like a miniature clockwork escapement ticking inside the brass bezel, accompanied by a low, harmonic crystalline hum resonating from the pommel crystal.
- Touch: The ironwood grip cools rapidly, tingling against the palm with a faint static discharge as if handling ice wrapped in conductive wire. The braided five-phase metal filaments vibrate subtly, providing a tactile sense of gyro-stabilization that steadies the hand against tremors.
- Smell: A sharp, clean scent of ozone and chilled mountain air washes over the user’s face, instantly cutting through the stale, cloying stench of rot, dried blood, or decomposing matter at a crime scene.
- Taste: The user experiences a sharp, crisp metallic sensation on the back of the palate, akin to touching a clean copper or silver coin to the tongue.
- Mind’s Eye Perception: The user’s Mind’s Eye perceives a clear, floating chronological timeline overlaid across the field of view. Temporal indices click backward in precise minutes and hours, calculating the exact time of death, angle of kinetic trauma, and the elemental affinity of the weapon used.
- Extra-Sensory Resonance: A distinct clairvoyant awareness opens, allowing the user to perceive the lingering emotional echo of violence—a cold, static dissonance in the local Weave—while tracing the psychic imprint left behind by the perpetrator’s spiritual weight.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Sight: An onlooker sees the azure crystal at the base of the ironwood handle brighten, casting an intense, focused circle of blue-violet light through the quartz lens onto the inspected surface. When the active reconstruction triggers, faint golden light bleeds into the air, manifesting flickering, ghostly silhouettes that briefly re-enact physical motions above the floor.
- Sound: Observers hear a high-pitched, resonant glass ping—resembling a crystal goblet lightly struck with a tuning fork—followed by an eerie, muffled acoustic hush that dampens ambient background noise within five feet.
- Touch: Those standing immediately beside the investigator feel a sudden, localized drop in temperature, accompanied by a faint draft of dry air and a static charge that causes arm hairs to stand on end.
- Smell: Bystanders detect a faint odor of cold quartz slurry and ionized air, masking ambient room odors with a sterile, clinical presence.
- Taste: Nearby observers facing the lens may notice a dry, iron-like tang on the lips if standing within the projected cone of ultraviolet light.
- Aura Perception: Observers with awakened magical sight see five thin bands of elemental light (green, red, yellow, white, and black) spiraling outward from the frame, weaving a temporary boundary that isolates the evidence from ambient planar contamination.
- Positives:
- Scrubbed, degraded, or microscopic physical evidence is made instantly visible, rendering attempts to bleach or clean a murder scene useless against the investigator.
- The undeniable visual reconstruction of past movements provides absolute clarity on the direction of an attack, entry vectors, and the physical stature of the assailant, eliminating investigative guesswork.
- The sterile ozone wash suppresses putrid odors, allowing the investigator to work over decomposing corpses or toxic chemical residues without sensory impairment or nausea.
- The somatic steadying effect dampens natural physical tremors, granting exceptional stability when extracting fragile microscopic fibers or scraping dried reagents.
- Negatives:
- The vivid blue-violet glow and projected golden silhouettes are impossible to conceal, instantly exposing the investigator’s position in darkened ruins, alleys, or stealth operations.
- The sharp glass ping and rhythmic ticking alert nearby suspects or guards that an active magical inquest is underway.
- Experiencing the victim’s final moments through temporal reconstruction can impose sudden psychic shock and emotional fatigue on the user during particularly brutal homicides.
- Interrogated suspects who observe their lies flaring in violet mist often panic or lash out violently, escalating peaceful questioning into desperate, erratic physical confrontations.

Crafting Steps
- Handle Turning and Socketing:
- Shape the seasoned ironwood blank into a contoured handle measuring five inches in length, turning it smooth until balanced in the hand.
- Bore a central socket into the bottom base of the handle, sized to fit the coin-sized tier 1 crystal.
- Incise five spiral grooves along the grip surface, creating recessed tracks to seat the metallic phase wires flush with the wood.
- Mount the threaded brass neck fitting to the top of the handle, securing it with an internal iron pin.
- Quartz Grinding and Bevel Inscription:
- Mount the raw optical quartz disc onto the lapidary wheel using lapping powder and water, grinding both faces into a convex lens three inches in diameter.
- Polish the lens surfaces until optically clear without distortion or scratches.
- Using the diamond-tipped burin, engrave the eight Onmyodo trigrams and celestial coordinates around the outer bevel of the lens.
- Seat the finished quartz lens into the circular brass frame, securing it with the brass retaining ring.
- Five-Phase Elemental Wrapping:
- Braid the five metallic wires—gold, silver, copper, iron, and lead—into a tight, five-strand cord.
- Wind the braided wire cord along the five spiral grooves carved into the ironwood handle.
- Using the wire-wrapping pliers, anchor both ends of the braid under the brass fittings, burnishing the wires flat into the grain to establish an unbroken circuit for ambient mana flow.
- Sacrificial Transference and Crystal Seating:
- Place the sacrificial minor revelation charm and the tier 1 magic crystal into an alchemical crucible.
- Warm the crucible over low heat while chanting an unbroken somatic incantation of focus lasting longer than six seconds.
- The physical structure of the revelation charm dissolves into glowing azure mist, which is drawn into the crystal’s crystalline lattice.
- Using the fluid collector, inject two drams of purified tree resin into the base socket of the ironwood handle.
- Press the glowing, charged crystal firmly into the socket, securing it as the pommel stone and allowing the resin to cure completely.
- Final Assembly and Astrological Calibration:
- Thread and lock the brass lens assembly onto the ironwood handle, ensuring the celestial trigrams align with the metallic braid.
- Sight the position of Helios using the astrological sextant to establish direct planar coordinates during the noon hour.
- Hold the completed loupe flat across both palms, extending it into the light to establish handheld attunement.
- Roll a d20 to finalize the structural bonding: on a roll of 2 through 19, the components harmonize cleanly, producing the completed Onmyodo of the Forensic Diviner’s Loupe; on a roll of 20, the optical matrix achieves exceptional resonance, granting an unexpected minor trait; on a roll of 1, the bond destabilizes, shattering the azure crystal and ruining the components.
Glass Eye That Saw Blood Under Salt
In the long-ago turning when the moon had not yet learned to turn its cold side away from the great boiling belly of the sky, there was a man of the low-water islands who was called Inspector Oribe the Slow-Walker. He was not a breaker of wooden ships with fire-pots, nor did he possess three hundred oxen to make him heavy in the council of grandmothers. His head was filled with the strange, unwashed mud of a former life from beyond the grand empty water where stars do not fall. He remembered wide gray roads where iron wagons rolled without horses, and stone rooms where white-coat men looked into shiny tubes to count the invisible maggots that eat a dead man’s liver. In this world, however, he had only a long coat of salted flax, a small iron spoon for eating bean paste, and a round piece of crystal stone set in a yellow brass hoop.
In those rotations, the high seat of the province of Three Crags was shaken by a dark doing inside the grand storehouse of the local river mistress. Her name was Lady Chiyo of the Seven Weirs, who held the royal paper signed by the great mothers to weigh all the salt fish that passed down the mountain water. On the third day of the Dimming week, when the great planet VaporSphere climbed into the belly of Helios and made the light like the juice of squashed mulberries, her younger nephew, Lord Taro, was found dead upon the flagstones of the private treasure room. His throat was not cut with a straight iron knife, nor was his head cracked like a dried gourd. He lay with his face pressed into a basket of dried salt-shrimps, his skin the color of a wet slate shingle, and his eyes wide like the eyes of an owl that has seen the lightning hit its nest.
Around him, seven hundred plates of stamped trade-silver were missing from the great cedar boxes. The iron lock on the double doors of the vault was untouched; the wax seal of the river office was unbroken; and the four guard-men outside swore upon the bones of their maternal aunts that not even a water-rat had crossed the threshold since the third watch of the noon.
The chief constable of the district was a man named Banno the Thick-Neck. He was a cousin to the mistress of the weirs and had a belly that pushed his belt down to his knees. Banno did not like the smell of small rooms or the quiet counting of dust. He drew his iron sword, spat upon the doorpost, and seized a young stable-lad named Kenta, whose mother was a foreigner from the reed marshes. Banno cried out with a loud throat: “This boy has the foreign face that steals silver! He climbed down the chimney like a soot-weasel! His hands are black with the soot of the flue! Tie him to the wooden horse and pour vinegar into his nostrils until he tells where the silver plates are buried!”
The stable-lad wept until his snot ran into his mouth, swearing by the light of Helios that he had spent the night sleeping under the belly of an old mule to keep from freezing. But the people of the market nodded their heads like reeds in the tide, for it is easy to burn the foreigner when the silver of the house is gone.
Then Inspector Oribe came through the gate. He did not run, for his knees were filled with the salt-rheum, and he leaned upon an ash stick. In his left hand he held the round glass that was bound in yellow brass, its ironwood handle wrapped with five thin wires of gold, silver, red-copper, dark iron, and heavy lead. In the bottom of the handle was a round blue stone that shone like the eye of a dead carp under ice.
Banno laughed with a noise like a wet skin-drum and said, “Go back to your dried beans, old man! The dog that bit the meat is caught by the tail! The court will give me three bags of rice for finding the thief before the dinner hour!”
Oribe did not open his teeth to answer the noise. He walked into the dark treasure room where the dead nephew still lay upon the cold flagstones. He took his ash stick and placed it against the doorframe, then held the round glass between his thumb and two fingers. He did not scream to the gods of the wind, nor did he cut the throat of a cock to smear the floor with blood. He simply lifted the brass hoop toward the small roof-hole where the light of Helios came down through the purple shadow of the sky.
A noise came from the glass like the small click of a water-clock that measures the sleep of priests. The round blue stone in the handle flared with a pale light like the mold that grows on damp birch bark. When Oribe looked through the quartz face, the room did not appear as the eyes of common men see it. The dead stones of the floor turned gray like ash, but along the mortar lines, where Banno’s boots had tracked mud, there appeared glowing marks of bright blue fire, shaped like the claws of a water-fowl.
Oribe bent down, his old joints cracking like dry sticks. He pointed his finger at the wall beneath the great iron safe, where no soot had fallen from the chimney. “The boy did not come through the flue,” Oribe whispered, though his voice had the cold weight of a stone dropped down a deep cistern. “The soot of the chimney does not shine with blue light when the five metals wake the quartz.”
He stepped closer to the dead nephew. Through the glass, he looked at the purple throat of Lord Taro. There were no bruises from iron fingers, but upon the skin of the neck, glowing like hot coals in the dark, were three small drops of dried yellow fat that smelled of crushed bitter almonds and mountain toad-spit. Above the dead boy’s head, the round glass began to spin with golden threads of light, weaving the air like a spider making a net.
The people who were peering through the open door cried out in fear and fell upon their knees, for out of the golden threads came the clear shape of two men who were not made of flesh. One shape was small, wearing the wide sleeves of Lord Taro, sitting upon a stool to count silver plates. The other shape came not from the roof, but walked out from behind the heavy silk curtain where the Lady Chiyo kept her spare robes. The second shape had a great belly and a thick neck. It carried a small cloth soaked in toad-grease, which it pressed over the face of the young nephew while his legs kicked like a frog in a net. Then the golden shape of the fat man took the iron key from his own belt, opened the cedar boxes, and dropped the seven hundred silver plates into three broad leather feed-sacks.
Inspector Oribe turned the glass away from the floor and pointed the brass hoop straight at Banno the Thick-Neck.
As the constable stood in the doorway with his drawn sword, the blue light of the quartz hit his chest. Through the glass, every man in the courtyard could see that beneath his heavy leather coat, the hems of his three undershirts were soaked with the same blue-glowing brine that lay upon the floor. And inside the pockets of his great riding-trousers, the heavy round shapes of the stamped silver plates shone with bright orange light through the leather, like hot embers carried in an ox-bladder.
Banno roared like a wounded water-bull and lifted his iron sword to split the old inspector’s skull. But the blue crystal at the base of the handle gave forth a sharp sound like the breaking of thin ice, and from the frame rushed an invisible breath of cold air that struck Banno in the throat. His knees turned into water; his sword clattered upon the flagstones; and the heavy sacks of stolen silver spilled from under his coat, rolling across the floor until they clinked against the cold boots of the dead nephew.
The Lady Chiyo, seeing her nephew’s killer exposed by the true shape of the light, ordered her remaining guard-men to bind Banno with the thickest wet hemp ropes and strip the foreign stable-lad of his chains. The people shouted with great wonder, saying that the spirit of the ancient moon-mother had descended into the yellow brass to speak the truth of the dead.
Inspector Oribe did not stay to eat the cakes of victory, nor did he accept the five plates of silver that Lady Chiyo pressed into his hand. He wiped the quartz disc with the hem of his damp linen sleeve, placed the ironwood handle into his grass sash, and took up his ash stick to walk down the river road before the cold night should settle into the marshes.
Moral of the Story: The mouth of the powerful may shout the name of the thief until the walls shake, but when the five phases turn the glass upon the floor, the blood and the grease will show the true face of the butcher even if he wears the robes of the judge.

Forensic Diviner’s Loupe Wondrous Item, Common (Requires Attunement)
- Item Description: A handheld magnifying lens measuring seven inches long with a three-inch quartz lens, mounted within an inscribed brass bezel. Its seasoned ironwood handle is bound with five metallic wire filaments (gold, silver, copper, iron, lead) representing cyclical transformations, terminating in a coin-sized azure crystal. Peering through the lens casts a faint ultraviolet halo over crime scenes, illuminating latent biological traces and psychic echoes.
- Forensic Insight (Passive): While holding this loupe to your eye, you have advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) and Wisdom (Insight) checks made to examine crime scenes, identify scrubbed or dried biological fluids, detect altered or forged handwriting, and recognize tool abrasions from lockpicking or sabotage.
- Temporal Reconstruction (Active): As an action, you align the lens with daylight and speak a command word while aiming it at a point on the ground within 5 feet. The loupe projects a silent, translucent golden illusion depicting the physical movements of any creatures that occupied that 5-foot space within the last 24 hours. The spectral replay lasts up to 30 seconds, revealing the size, stance, entry path, and weapon trajectory of an assailant. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the next dawn.
- Elemental Trail (Active): As an action, you touch the frame to an identified physical track, blood drop, or scuff mark. For 1 hour, the trail ignites with faint, glowing footprints visible only to you through the lens, leading up to 600 feet regardless of weather, mud, or attempts to sweep the tracks. Once used, this property cannot be used again until the next dawn.
- Crystalline Strain: Whenever you roll a natural 1 on an ability check while using the loupe’s active magic, roll a d20. On a roll of 1, the azure pommel crystal shatters, rendering the item nonmagical until a new gemstone worth at least 50 gp is fitted and enchanted over a long rest.
Call of Cthulhu
The Inquisitor’s Quartz Lens Occult Relic / Talisman
- Description: A brass-mounted magnifying loupe ground from pure mountain quartz, fitted to a dark wooden grip wrapped in five conductive elemental wires. A deep blue mineral nodule is fixed to the base. When held to the eye, the glass reveals invisible physical fluids and biological stains without chemical reagents.
- Sanity Cost: Viewing a temporal spectral murder replay through the lens requires a Sanity check (1/1d4 Sanity points lost) due to the unnatural chronological dislocation and the visual horror of witnessing past trauma. Activating its active divination properties costs 1d3 Sanity points and 4 Magic Points.
- Forensic Divination (Passive Effect): An investigator peering through the lens gains a bonus die on Forensics, Spot Hidden, and Medicine rolls when analyzing a murder scene, identifying obscure poisons, determining the exact cause and time of death, or finding concealed blood spatter.
- Aura of Guilt (Active Ritual): By spending 1 combat round and expending 4 Magic Points while aiming the lens at an interrogated suspect within 5 yards, the investigator invokes an Onmyodo truth ward. If the subject attempts a Fast Talk or Charm roll to conceal a recent violent crime, their aura flares with a violent violet haze visible through the glass, imposing a penalty die on their social deception roll and alerting the investigator to the falsehood.
- Structural Strain: If an investigator pushes a Forensics or Spot Hidden roll while employing the loupe and rolls a Fumble (96–100, or 100 if skill is 50+), the azure focus crystal fractures into fine dust. The item permanently loses its luminescence, active reconstruction, and magical bonuses, functioning only as a mundane antique magnifying glass.

Five-Phase Forensic Loupe Arcane Implement / Curio (1 Load)
- Description: An ironwood-handled optical loupe bound with fine spiraled elemental filaments and fitted with an electroplasmic azure spirit-gem. Its quartz lens isolates physical residue in the ghost field, revealing scrubbed blood and tampering with cold ultraviolet clarity.
- Quality & Tier: Tier I Fine Arcane Investigation Tool. When used in actions to investigate crime scenes, decipher physical sabotage, examine dead bodies, or track physical evidence, it counts as Fine quality (+1 Quality level to your position or effect).
- Forensic Reconstruction (Passive): When you take downtime or spend an action to Gather Information or Study an infiltrated crime scene or saboteur’s route, you may mark 1 Stress to improve the result level of your roll by one step (a 1–3 becomes a 4/5, a 4/5 becomes a Critical).
- Echo of the Act (Active): You spend an action and suffer 2 Stress to focus the lens on a bloodstain, opened lock, or floorboard. A shimmering golden ghost-echo manifests within the viewing glass, replaying the last moments of violent movement or tampering that took place within the area over the past day. This provides Potency and Great Effect on all immediate rolls to identify the culprit’s methods or faction.
- Misfire Clock: The item has an integrated 4-segment countdown clock titled “Crystal Shatter.” Whenever a Complication or Serious Complication occurs on a Study or Attune roll involving the loupe, the GM may tick 1 segment of this clock. When all 4 segments fill, the azure jewel fractures; the loupe loses its Fine quality and supernatural traits until repaired via a downtime Tinker project.
Knave
Onmyodo Loupe of Revelation Item Slot: 1 (Handheld or Stowed)
- Item Type: Arcane Divination Implement
- Item Qualities: 3/3 Item Hit Points. Occupies 1 inventory slot. Can be wielded in one hand as a focus or tool. Does not function if placed inside extradimensional storage.

The user automatically recognizes whether a lock has been picked or a door forced without needing a check.
- Active Spell: Echo of the Past (Action): Once per day, the wielder peers through the lens and speaks an activation word. The loupe projects a silent, glowing golden silhouette that re-enacts the last 30 seconds of physical action that occurred in that 5-foot space during the previous 24 hours. The user clearly sees the weapon used, the attacker’s approach, and their physical build.
- Active Spell: Trace the Stride (Action): Once per day, by touching the loupe to an identified footprint or fluid droplet, the wielder causes the target’s tracks to glow with elemental light for 1 exploration turn (10 minutes), allowing effortless tracking across stone, mud, or swept terrain for up to 500 feet.
- Item Degradation: Whenever the bearer suffers direct damage to their inventory while the loupe is in hand, or when an action using the loupe results in a catastrophic check, roll a d6. On a roll of 1, the loupe loses 1 Item Hit Point. At 0 Item Hit Points, the azure crystal breaks, neutralizing all active and passive magical properties until repaired by a master lapidary using 100 copper coins worth of cut gemstones.
