  • Lore:
    • During the Middle Ages of Saṃsāra, covert agents and information brokers expanded the Web of Foes across the 73 island countries, relying on eavesdropping and infiltration to undermine rival courts.
    • In the northern forests of the island country Tayacian, a displaced noaidi spirit-walker noticed that foreign spies were using mundane disguises and stolen seals to intercept sensitive courier dispatches.
    • Drawing on ancient ancestral practices of communing with birch spirits and local land wights, the shaman shaped protective tokens capable of alerting couriers to deceit, covert observation, and hidden intentions.
    • These items were traditionally gifted to trusted messengers and royal couriers to ensure that sensitive deliberations remained safe from political assassins and guild eavesdroppers.
    • Over centuries, the design was replicated by solitary hedge-crafters and northern scouts who required a discreet means to counter espionage without carrying overt, heavily armored security gear.
  • Description:
    • A palm-sized, flat medallion carved from the pale, cured bark of a lightning-struck silver birch, bound along the outer edge with braided reindeer sinew.
    • The front face of the talisman is hand-carved with three interlaced spiral symbols representing the watchful eyes of wind wights, inlaid with pulverized copper shavings and charcoal paste.
    • Embedded directly into the center of the medallion is a tiny, coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal that radiates a faint, rhythmic vibration against the wearer’s skin whenever spoken falsehoods vibrate through the surrounding air.
    • The reverse surface is backed with soft, oil-treated reindeer hide and fastened with a dull iron brooch pin, allowing it to be pinned under a lapel, cloak lining, or openly affixed to a traveler’s sash.
    • Suspended from the bottom rim are three tiny, hollow beads carved from stag bone, which emit a barely perceptible, dry clatter when subjected to unnatural drafts or nearby invisible presences.
  • Stats:
    • Item Tier: Tier 1 (Common)
    • Item HP: Avatar maximum HP plus 10
    • Resilience: 10
    • Armor Check (AC): +1 AC to the avatar when worn openly on a sash or lapel (well within the legal limit of 3 AC per item level)
    • Weight: 0.5 pounds
    • Attunement: Simple attunement (requires one continuous minute of focused meditation while holding the wooden face against the chest)
  • Slot:
    • Waist (affixed to a sash) or Chest (pinned directly to an outer garment or tunic).
  • Passives Magic:
    • Spiritual Eavesdrop Dampener: The talisman passively absorbs stray sonic vibrations in the wielder’s immediate vicinity, muffling the wearer’s whispers and making private discussions completely inaudible beyond a distance of 10 feet to anyone listening through walls, cracks, or doors.
    • Birch-Wight Vigilance: The wielder’s Mind’s Eye passively receives an intuitive prickling sensation across the nape of the neck whenever a creature within 30 feet is actively observing the wielder from stealth, concealment, or through physical disguise.
    • Scrying Deflection: The ambient spiritual field surrounding the medallion disperses low-tier divination, causing remote scrying lenses, magical sensors, or peeping familiars targeting the wielder to perceive only mundane, blurry shadows and rustling leaves.
  • Activable Magics:
    • Whisper of the False Tongue (Normal Somatic):
      • Taking an action to press a finger against the central copper spiral while chanting a quiet four-word invocation to the tree spirits.
      • For the next 10 minutes, whenever an individual within 15 feet speaks a deliberate, intentional falsehood to the wielder, the central crystal pulses with a sharp, cold sting against the wearer’s skin and the bone beads click softly.
      • This ability allows the wielder to immediately identify when an interrogation subject, informant, or diplomatic rival is attempting to feed them misinformation.
      • This ability consumes 1 charge from the medallion’s crystal; the charge replenishes after a long rest or by directly infusing ambient mana into the stone.
    • Veil of False Alignment (Ritual, Somatic):
      • Taking an action to trace the outer sinew braid with bone ash while reciting a six-second rhythmic noaidi chant of misdirection.
      • For the next hour, the wearer’s aura and Mind’s Eye status appear completely altered to outside inspectors, registering as a common, unaligned Tier 1 laborer with mundane statistics rather than an active operative or guard.
      • Any external observer attempting an active identify action on the wielder’s gear sees false mundane values instead of the wielder’s actual equipped attributes.
    • Spirit-Wash of Scents (Silent Action):
      • The wearer firmly taps the wooden face of the medallion against their breastbone, invoking an immediate silent pulse.
      • Any scent, chemical tracking marker, fluid collector residue, or tracking hound scent-trail adhering to the wielder’s garments or boots is instantly stripped away and replaced with the neutral scent of clean rain and fresh birch shavings.
      • Because this casting is completely silent, it can be executed covertly mid-stride while evading pursuing scouts or bloodhounds through crowded streets.

Commerce and Outlets for the Whispering Birch

  • Covert Information Dens and Antiquities Paraphernalia Shops:
    • Situated along secluded alleys in major capital cities, within diplomatic quarters, or near trade wharfs where intelligence brokers and fixers conduct their daily business.
    • The proprietor generally keeps such items tucked behind shelves of mundane manuscripts, cipher manuals, and hollowed book safes, displaying them only to patrons who know specific guild passphrases.
    • Buying from an established antiquities broker requires paying full value in standard coinage or through direct transfers recorded in the buyer’s World Bank balance, though characters belonging to an accredited Informants or Scriveners Guild receive a 10% discount scaled by their tier level.
    • When selling an intact medallion to a broker, the shopkeeper haggles down roughly 10% of the item’s baseline value per tier of the character selling it, recording the transaction into their logbook before depositing the funds into the character’s World Bank ledger.
    • The standard asking price in an information broker’s storefront ranges between 70 and 110 silver coins (or 7 to 11 gold coins), while buyout payouts offered to sellers typically hover between 35 and 55 silver coins depending on tier-based negotiations.
  • Northern Woodcraft and Shamanic Herbalist Ateliers:
    • Found along the forest perimeters of northern states, in logging river settlements, or near frontier garrisons where ancestral birch-carving and land-spirit veneration remain customary.
    • These small, family-run workshops sell wood carvings, herbal infusions, and protective charms directly from timber benches smelling of boiled resin, wood chips, and dried moss.
    • Acquiring the piece here often involves a short roleplay exchange where the elder woodcarver determines whether the buyer intends to use the talisman for legitimate defense against invasive spies or malicious eavesdropping.
    • Transactions in these frontier hamlets are settled using physical silver pieces, electrum coins, or bartered craft supplies like dried stag sinew and quality fluid collector tree saps.
    • Typical purchase costs in a woodcarver atelier range from 60 to 90 silver coins, whereas a direct sale of the medallion to the artisan yields around 30 to 45 silver coins transferred directly into the seller’s account.
  • Frontier Military Exchanges and Guard Quartermasters:
    • Operating within fortresses, border watch-posts, and supply depots situated along major highways between states where municipal forces monitor contraband and insurgent movements.
    • The resident quartermaster or appointed military official manages inventory earmarked for couriers, scouts, and perimeter sentries tasked with uncovering hidden spies or identifying masked infiltrators.
    • Purchasing from a military depot requires proper guild credentials or an official seal of service, and transactions are strictly logged with the central island administration to prevent illegal diversion of military-grade gear.
    • Payments are handled through official bank transfers or standard precious metals, with trade tariffs applied if the item is transferred to a foreign traveler or non-resident.
    • The requisition cost at a state garrison post averages 80 to 120 silver coins, while a mercenary or courier turning in a salvaged piece will receive a standard processing bounty of roughly 40 to 60 silver coins.
  • Underground Back-Alley Fences and Smuggler Nooks:
    • Hidden within tavern cellars, disused dock warehouses, or subterranean aqueduct tunnels where thieves, covert agents, and cutpurses congregate without fear of tax collectors.
    • Black-market traders sell security wards and counter-surveillance tools retrieved from fallen couriers or confiscated from captured agents, keeping no transaction logs and asking no questions about identity or intent.
    • When purchasing from a back-alley fence, the item is sold at full price or at an inflated rate if political tensions are high, and transactions must be completed entirely in physical gold or silver currency rather than World Bank credit.
    • If a character chooses to sell the medallion into the shadow trade, the fence will pay immediate cash in hand without bureaucratic inquiry, occasionally paying up to double the standard merchant payout if an espionage ring urgently needs covert charms.
    • Outright acquisition costs in subterranean black markets typically demand 10 to 18 gold pieces in raw metal, while offloading the talisman to a fence yields an immediate cash payout between 5 and 10 physical gold coins.

Counter-Espionage Operations Across Diverse Environments

  • Diplomatic Halls and Royal Palaces:
    • In the marble corridors, embassy parlors, and grand state ballrooms where foreign ambassadors, royal advisors, and courtiers continuously vie for political leverage, direct physical confrontation is forbidden. Defensively, the operative wears the talisman tucked discreetly beneath an embroidered tunic lapel or pinned into the folds of an envoy’s sash. While seated across from rival emissaries during treaty deliberations, the operative uses the passive Spiritual Eavesdrop Dampener to confer with their party members in hushed tones, ensuring that even sharp-eared viziers or concealed eavesdroppers behind the velvet drapes hear nothing but muffled murmurs. Furthermore, when negotiating agreements, the operative relies on the passive Birch-Wight Vigilance to detect hidden palace informants loitering behind columned screens or concealed in ceiling galleries.
    • Offensively in these halls of power, the item becomes an instrument of tactical interrogation. The wielder casually brushes a thumb against the copper inlay on the medallion’s face, quietly invoking the Whisper of the False Tongue while offering an exchange of political secrets. As the rival noble delivers an intentionally doctored account of border troop movements or naval logistics, the icy sting of the pommel crystal and the faint clinking of the bone beads immediately unmask the deception. Armed with absolute certainty that the ambassador is lying, the operative can redirect the negotiation, trap the envoy in their own fabricated narrative, or subtly blackmail the official without drawing a single blade or raising an alarm.
  • Crowded Harbor Docks and Smuggler Warehouses:
    • In the dense fog, timber walkways, and noisy cargo wharfs of coastal cities where goods move between island countries, undercover agents, and dockside cutthroats, survival requires absolute vigilance against ambush and pursuit. Defensively, when moving through narrow alleyways stacked with fish crates and shipping barrels, the operative relies on the hollow bone beads suspended from the talisman. If an invisible stalker, magically camouflaged rogue, or cloaked assassin steps into the operative’s wake, the beads clatter dryly against each other, giving immediate tactical warning of a flank attack before weapons are drawn.
    • Offensively among the wharfs, when evading municipal watch patrols or hunting down a fleeing informant through a warren of dockside warehouses, the operative triggers the Spirit-Wash of Scents. By firmly tapping the birch face against their chest, the wielder instantly strips away all chemical tracking reagents, harbor brine, and tracking hound scents. This throws guard hounds completely off the trail, allowing the operative to slip past search cordons. Immediately following this evasion, the wielder uses the Veil of False Alignment to alter their Mind’s Eye projection to that of a common cargo loader, enabling them to corner the hiding informant inside an empty hold while disguised as an ordinary dock laborer.
  • Frontier Roads, Garrisons, and Wilderness Checkpoints:
    • Along the wide trade highways connecting coastal ports to central island capitals, state border patrols, mercenary outposts, and bandit rings maintain constant surveillance over passing caravans. Defensively, an adventuring party carrying sensitive dispatches or illicit magical catalysts activates the Scrying Deflection property as they approach heavily monitored toll gates. Remote divination sensors, floating eye trinkets, and guild scrying mirrors attempting to monitor the road perceive only blurred heat mirages and swaying tree limbs, masking the travelers’ actual identities and gear loadouts from fortress mages miles away.
    • Offensively during checkpoint inspections, an operative intentionally steps forward to present travel permits to a corrupt border magistrate or inquisitor. The operative maintains the Veil of False Alignment, feeding false, mundane statistics to the inquisitor’s active Mind’s Eye scan. Believing the operative to be a completely harmless, unpossessed Tier 1 traveler with no combat equipment, the corrupt guard reveals the location of their secret ledger or attempts to solicit an illegal bribe. Once the magistrate openly commits to the extortion, the operative uses the gathered intelligence to command the state garrison or spring a pre-planned party ambush.
  • Subterranean Megacities and Dark Cavern Tunnels:
    • Deep within the vast cavern networks and subterranean mining metropolises beneath Saṃsāra’s crust, sound carries across immense distances, echoing off damp limestone formations and fungal shelves. Defensively, the talisman’s sonic dampening ensures that boots scraping across gravel or gear rustling during covert reconnaissance remain entirely deadened, preventing subterranean predators and rival guild patrols that rely on acute hearing or echolocation from pinpointing the operative’s squad.
    • Offensively in the subterranean gloom, when infiltrating a rival faction’s underground storage crypt or smuggling redoubt, the operative uses the talisman to systematically identify compromised double agents within an excavation crew. By gathering suspected miners around a forge fire and invoking the Whisper of the False Tongue, the operative poses pointed queries regarding stolen magical crystalline cells. The quiet vibration against the operative’s chest singles out the saboteurs in real time, allowing the squad to quietly neutralize the infiltrators before they can sabotage the mine shafts or signal their surface handlers.
  • High-Altitude Airships and Floating Sky Platforms:
    • Aboard commercial zeppelins, dirigibles, and open platform docks anchored to floating mage towers, space is strictly confined and passengers are forced into close quarters for days at a time. Defensively, an operative tasked with protecting a VIP passenger uses the medallion to continually screen the common passenger lounge. If a hostile infiltrator has used illusion spells or disguise gear to take the place of a flight crew attendant, the wielder’s Mind’s Eye passively receives a sharp prickling sensation whenever the impostor approaches with food trays or engine reports, uncovering the threat before poisoned refreshments can be served.
    • Offensively during an airborne transit, an operative can corner a suspected spy on the exterior observation deck amidst howling crosswinds. While leaning over the railing under the pretense of admiring the cloud cover below, the operative employs the Spiritual Eavesdrop Dampener to isolate the interrogation from the rest of the crew, ensuring no crewmember or sky marshal hears the confrontation. The operative interrogates the captive while monitoring the crystal’s pulse to strip away fabricated cover stories, successfully extracting the rival faction’s cipher keys before delivering the operative to the authorities at the next sky dock.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Visual Perception: The central crystal embedded within the pale birch bark brightens from an inert, cloudy stone into a focused point of cool violet and pale blue luminance. The three copper spiral channels running outward from the core begin to glow with a faint, embers-like metallic warmth, casting thin lines of coppery light across the white wood grain.
    • Auditory Perception: Ambient room noise—such as the distant rumble of street traffic, flapping canvas, or the crackle of distant hearth fires—instantly drops in volume as if muffled by thick winter snow. Directly beneath this dampened silence, the wearer hears a persistent, gentle rustling akin to dry birch leaves whispering under a steady autumn wind.
    • Tactile Perception: A sharp, localized pulse of biting arctic cold prickles the skin directly beneath the iron pin and leather backing, centering over the chest or hip. This chill is immediately followed by a fine, rhythmic buzzing sensation that mimics a rapid heartbeat humming through the sinew binding.
    • Olfactory Perception: A clean, sharp scent of fresh wood shavings, stripped green bark, and lightning-scorched ozone fills the nasal passages, clearing out any lingering odors of sweat, perfume, or tavern smoke.
    • Gustatory Perception: The tongue detects a faint, astringent bitterness reminiscent of chewing on fresh winter birch twigs, accompanied by a dry, metallic trace of copper dust along the inner cheeks.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
      • Mind’s Eye Resonance: A distinct, intuitive perimeter awareness expands roughly 30 feet outward, manifesting as a subtle mental grid where hostile or deceitful intents prickle like microscopic needles against the wielder’s conscious thoughts.
      • Aura Damping: The wielder experiences an internal sensation of sinking into an unassailable shadow, feeling their own magical and physiological presence retreat inward, shielded behind a layer of cool, protective tree-spirit energy.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Visual Perception: Observers notice the small medallion pinned to the wearer’s garments emit a momentary, soft flicker of pale violet light from its center, while the spiral copper inlays shimmer briefly before settling into a muted, dull gleam. A faint, wispy curl of translucent vapor trails from the bottom edge around the bone beads.
    • Auditory Perception: Anyone standing close enough to converse hears the speaker’s voice acquire a quiet, crisp timbre, while the background echo of the room seems unusually deadened. As the wearer moves, the tiny suspended stag bone beads produce an intermittent, dry tapping sound that resembles a small bird pecking at frozen bark.
    • Tactile Perception: An individual entering within arm’s reach of the wearer feels an abrupt, cool draft of air pass across their knuckles and face, as though a window had momentarily been cracked open to let in an arctic breeze.
    • Olfactory Perception: Observers catch a light, pleasant outdoor aroma of rain-washed forest soil, dry leaves, and clean timber, which completely masks any personal colognes or travel grime the wearer might otherwise carry.
    • Gustatory Perception: If standing within inches of the medallion, a nearby observer may notice a slight dry sensation on the palate, similar to breathing in crisp, zero-humidity mountain air.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
      • Divinatory Blur: An observer using True Sight, Darkvision, or the active identify ability of the Mind’s Eye perceives the wearer’s outline as subtly hazy and unfocused, seeing the avatar’s personal statistics and gear ranks masked behind the image of an ordinary, mundane laborer.
      • Psychic Murmur: Sensitive beings and magic-wielding creatures in the room sense the presence of watching woodland wights, feeling as though the silent gaze of wild forest eyes is turned directly upon their movements from an unseen hollow.
  • Positives:
    • Acute Lie Detection: Whenever an individual within range utters an intentional falsehood, the user receives an unmistakable physical alert—a sharp sting of frostbite against the skin and a warning vibration—eliminating uncertainty during critical negotiations or interrogations.
    • Complete Acoustic Privacy: The sonic dampening ward isolates discussions, enabling the user and their companions to discuss sensitive operational plans in public spaces or hostile halls without fear of mundane or directional eavesdropping.
    • Tracking Scent Nullification: The immediate eradication of organic residues, blood, and chemical scents leaves pursuit beasts and bloodhounds unable to follow the operative’s trail.
  • Negatives:
    • Telltale Audio Tells: The light clattering of the hanging bone beads, while quiet, can betray the user’s exact footsteps when attempting absolute physical silence in narrow stone corridors or empty rooms.
    • Persistent Localized Chill: The medallion maintains a freezing temperature against the wearer’s body while active, causing localized skin numbness, shivering, and slight muscle stiffness across the chest or torso during prolonged assignments.
    • Visual Spark Hazard: The initial flash of violet light upon activation, though brief, can be easily spotted by sharp-eyed perimeter sentries or lookouts watching from elevated perches in total darkness.

Crafting Recipe: The Talisman of the Whispering Birch

  • Materials Needed:
    • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted, harvested from a slain creature) to function as the internal arcane battery catalyst.
    • One round plate of cured, thick bark harvested from an elder lightning-struck silver birch, roughly four inches in diameter and carefully dried.
    • Six feet of clean, braided northern stag sinew for perimeter rim binding and suspending the lower charms.
    • One half-ounce of finely hammered copper shavings and pure charcoal dust to fill the carved wight spiral channels.
    • One cured scrap of pliable northern reindeer hide, scraped thin and sized to back the medallion.
    • One dull iron brooch pin with a hinged catch for secure fabric fastening.
    • Three hollow beads carved from the dense leg bone of a yearling stag.
    • Two fluid drams of purified resinous sap harvested with a fluid collector from a living boreal birch or pine to serve as an alchemical binding lacquer.
    • One fluid dram of beast blood or spiritual ichor gathered using a fluid collector from an attuned forest creature to fix the runic channels.
  • Tools Required:
    • A set of fine wood-carving gouges, micro-chisels, and a curved whittling blade.
    • A standard fluid collector fitted with measuring needles to administer exact liquid measures.
    • An agate burnisher or flat bone spatula to tamp the metallic copper shavings into the carved wood.
    • A low-heat alchemical spirit lamp or portable jeweler’s brazier for warming and liquefying resin.
    • Fine leather-punching awls and curved bone sewing needles.
    • An iron anvil block and small ball-peen hammer for riveting the rear brooch clasp.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Trained Skill Level 5 or higher in Woodcrafting, Arcane Carving, or Alchemical Crafting.
    • Working knowledge of noaidi spirit lore, woodland wight communion, and warding glyphs.
    • Basic proficiency in leatherwork and sinew cord tensioning.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Step 1: Preparing the Birch Base and Crystalline Seat
      • Take the cured round of lightning-struck silver birch bark and sand both faces until flat and uniform, ensuring the outer white papery grain remains clean on the front side.
      • Use a small gouge to carefully hollow out a shallow, coin-sized circular cavity in the exact center of the front face to seat the Tier 1 magic crystal.
      • Warm one dram of the fluid collector tree sap over the spirit lamp until tacky, coating the base of the central hollow.
      • Firmly press the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into the resin bed, ensuring the stone sits completely level with the surrounding bark surface.
    • Step 2: Carving the Channels and Laying the Copper Wight Spirals
      • Using a fine V-tool chisel, carefully scribe three radiating, interlaced spiral channels curving outward from the central crystal seat toward the outer perimeter.
      • Blend the hammered copper shavings with the charcoal dust and the single dram of harvested spiritual beast ichor to form a dense, metallic paste.
      • Press the copper-charcoal paste firmly into the carved spiral channels using the bone burnisher, wiping away excess material from the white bark until the lines are sharp and metallic.
      • Allow the inlay to dry near the gentle warmth of the spirit lamp, causing the copper to bond securely to the wood fibers.
    • Step 3: Perimeter Perforation and Sinew Binding
      • Use the fine leather awl to punch evenly spaced diagonal holes around the entire outer perimeter edge of the birch disc, roughly one-eighth of an inch from the border.
      • Take the braided stag sinew and thread it continuously through the perimeter holes in a tight, overlapping spiral stitch to protect the soft bark edges from fraying or cracking.
      • Along the lower edge of the disc, leave three sinew loops hanging downward, each approximately two inches in length.
      • Slide one hollow stag bone bead onto each hanging loop, knotting the ends securely with double half-hitches to ensure the beads can strike one another freely when agitated.
    • Step 4: Backing and Brooch Hardware Assembly
      • Cut the thin reindeer hide scrap to perfectly match the circular diameter of the birch disc.
      • Position the dull iron brooch pin assembly onto the rough side of the hide, securing it with two small peened iron rivets through the leather.
      • Coat the reverse wooden face of the birch disc with the remaining warmed tree sap resin.
      • Press the reindeer hide backing firmly against the rear of the medallion, aligning the edges with the sinew perimeter, and use bone needles to whip-stitch the hide’s outer rim directly to the sinew border.
    • Step 5: Runic Empowerment and Final Inspection
      • Grasp the assembled medallion between both palms and invoke a continuous Somatic noaidi chant of truth and stillness for one full minute to awaken the tree spirits within the grain.
      • Speak a deliberate falsehood aloud while holding the talisman; verify that the central crystal immediately pulses with a sharp, cold sting against the skin and emits a faint lavender light.
      • Examine the finished piece through the Mind’s Eye to ensure all three passive wards register cleanly and that the item classifies as a common Tier 1 focus before fastening it to a garment or storing it for field deployment.

White Tree Bark and Ear That Walks in Darkness

In the old time before the seventy and three lands had counted their great kings, the world which is called Saṃsāra had many tongues that were broken into pieces by the falling of the sky fire. There was a walking man named Niilas, whose original soul was dropped out of the high basket of Gaialilith into the cold woods of the country which is called Tayacian. Because his first head was full of the white mist of forgetting, he walked among the high white trees like a man who has lost his snowshoes in a deep hole. The avatar vessel he was holding had the bones of a fisher of gray trout, and his skin was cold like the belly of a winter pike, for he did not know what deeds he had accomplished before the death-fire had burned his former dwelling in the other world.

In those woods, the people had built many small huts out of mud and pine logs, but they had no peace inside their stomachs. The great lords of the coast, who lived inside houses made of red stone where the sea boats bring salt, were sending many small men with black coats into the birch forests. These black-coat men carried papers painted with red grease, and they had tongues that were split like the tongues of water adders. They would sit beside the peat fires of the wood-cutters and speak words of honey, saying that the great queen on the high wharf wished to give them three copper kettles and bags of golden wheat, if only the forest men would tell which deep ravines held the magic stones and where the winged bears had made their winter caves.

When the wood-cutters opened their mouths and spoke the truth of the woods, the black-coat men ran away in the night. Soon after, the iron-soldiers of the coastal kings would march through the swamps, burning the timber huts, seizing the young stags, and taking the magic crystals from the hollow earth so that the forest people were left with only the black dirt to eat.

Niilas saw this wickedness from the top of a gray rock where he sat to watch the great white owls. His heart was very sore, for the wood-cutters were of the same skin as his host body, and their women were weeping until their eyes were red like boiled berries.

“The wind has many ears,” said the chief of the charcoal burners, whose name was Jorm of the Broken Knee. “When we speak inside our blankets, the coastal king hears our breathing. When we hide our bread under the flat hearth-stone, the black-coat men come with iron rods and dig it up before the sun has climbed over the mountain. We are like mice inside an empty barrel when the gray cat is sitting on the rim.”

Niilas went into the middle of the birch forest where the oldest mother tree was standing. This was a tree which had been bitten by the lightning from the sky when the world was first made into a round moon. The bark of this tree was thick like the sole of a hunter’s boot, and it was white like the grease of a fat calf. Niilas knelt upon the moss and spoke the seven words of the spruce and the four words of the running brook. He did not use an iron axe, for iron makes the tree wights shriek and hide inside the wet peat. He used only a sharp horn of an elk to peel away a round piece of the white bark, taking no more than the palm of a woman’s hand.

Then he walked to the place where the red water runs out of the copper hill. There he took the dust of the green stone and hammered it with a river pebble until it was fine like flour. He mixed the metal flour with the soot of burned alder twigs and the cold sap of the birch, which he pulled out using a hollow bone needle. With a sharp thorn of the gooseberry bush, he pressed the black copper mud into the wood, carving the three spirals of the great owl’s foot, which see behind and before and through the stone wall.

In the center of this round bark, he placed a small shining rock of violet water, which had been left in the moss by an ancient white badger when it turned into sparks and died. The rock was no larger than a coin of silver, but it had lived inside the badger for sixty winters and was full of the quiet thought of the earth. Around the wood he bound the tough cords of a stag’s leg, and from the bottom he hung three small bones of a grouse which had never flown over a chimney.

When the thing was completed, Niilas pinned it upon his ragged woolen vest with an iron nail that had been pulled from an old boat.

He walked down into the drinking tent where the charcoal burners and the wood-cutters were sitting with a stranger from the southern port. This stranger was dressed in clothes of fine green wool that had no mud upon the hem, and his fingers were long and white like peeled roots. He was pouring sweet berry wine into wooden cups and smiling with all his white teeth.

“Drink, good cousins,” said the green-coat man, whose tongue was smooth like butter in the pan. “The governor of the big port wharf has sent me to be your shield-brother. He has heard that the mountain king is sending iron wagons to steal your timber, and he wishes to hide your wives and your fat oxen inside his high stone walls. Tell me only where the secret mountain paths go through the gray rocks, and my master will send fifty knights with brass shields to keep you from all harm.”

The wood-cutters began to smile, and Jorm of the Broken Knee reached his hand to take the wine, opening his mouth to speak the path of the three passes.

Suddenly, the small bone beads hanging from the chest of Niilas began to clatter against each other: klak-klak, tik-tik, klak-klak. The sound was dry like the walking of a spider on dry birch paper. At the very same moment, the violet stone inside the birch disc sent a spear of cold ice straight into the ribs of Niilas, so sharp that he cried out like a man who has stepped into a wolf-trap. The three copper spirals began to burn with a pale, smokeless blue light that smelled of lightning fire and rain on stone.

Niilas leaped forward and struck the wine cup out of the hand of the green-coat stranger.

“He does not carry the heart of a shield-brother!” shouted Niilas, though the people looked at him with great wonder and fear. “His mouth speaks of fifty knights with brass shields, but the white tree has tasted his breath! When he says ‘safety,’ the frost bites my bone, and when he says ‘friend,’ the copper burns like a heated pot! He is the dog of the slave-master, and his wagons are already waiting behind the birch hill to put iron collars upon your necks!”

The stranger jumped from his stool, and his face turned gray like an unwashed pot. He drew a small, crooked dagger of black iron from under his fine sleeve, intending to put it through the throat of Niilas. But as he lunged, Niilas struck the front of the birch disc with his closed fist, invoking the silent spirit of the cold wind.

An immediate cloud of white spruce vapor burst from the bark, smelling so strongly of resin and swamp moss that the stranger could neither see nor breathe. The dagger struck only the hard air, and when the stranger turned to run through the tent door, he found that his nose had lost the scent of the path, and his ears could hear nothing but the heavy roaring of invisible birch leaves. The wood-cutters seized the false messenger by his green sleeves, and when they searched the lining of his coat, they found six iron chains, three lists of names, and a letter sealed with the red wax of the southern court ordering the burning of all the forest kilns.

From that hour, the people of the high birch woods knew that no lie could walk past the white bark disc. Niilas walked from camp to camp along the boundary roads. Whenever the emissaries of the coastal kings came carrying parchment treaties and chests of brass money, Niilas stood among the trees with the talisman upon his chest. If the envoys spoke with a straight belly, the medallion remained warm like a bird inside the nest; but if their hearts were crooked, the stag bone beads danced like hail upon a roof, and the wielder’s ribs were frozen with the warning frost.

The spies of the coast became so terrified of the whispering bark that they sent six assassins with bows of yew wood to kill Niilas as he slept beside the river. The assassins were smeared with black river mud and moved without breath upon the moss. But while they were still thirty paces distant, the passive spirit of the birch wights shook the sleeping avatar of Niilas, causing him to wake with his Mind’s Eye wide open. He saw the black shapes crawling through the blueberry bushes as clearly as if the star Helios were standing at high noon. He tapped the wood three times against his knee, stripping away his own trail-scent into clean rain-mist, and vanished into the gray bog while the arrows of the murderers found only an empty bed of ferns.

For sixty-three winters, the white medallion defended the northern passes of Tayacian. Because of its silent ear, not a single courier of the wood-people was ever trapped on the high roads, and the secret mining holes of the magic crystalline cells remained hidden from the greedy tax collectors of the great cities.

When the avatar body of Niilas was grown ancient, and his eyes could no longer see the fish through the river ripples, he took the birch talisman to the high rocky crag where the first lightning tree had fallen. He fastened the iron pin to the heart-wood of a living sapling that had sprouted from the dead trunk, leaving the bone beads to swing in the clean mountain wind.

“Stay here upon the mountain brow,” Niilas whispered to the wood wights before his tired soul left the avatar in a flare of purple sparks. “Listen to the four corners of the air. When the liar comes with soft shoes, bite him with the winter ice; but when the hunted man runs from the city chains, give him the quiet shadow of the leaves.”

Many seasons later, an ambitious tax officer named Klemens, who had been sent to count the goats of the mountain peasants, found the silver-barked round clinging to the young tree. Seeing the red copper inlay and the purple stone, he laughed with his fat belly, saying, “Here is a fine toy to pin upon my velvet cape when I sit at the table of the consul general.”

He ripped the brooch from the wood and pinned it over his breast. But as soon as he entered the state hall and began to recite his false account of the taxes—hiding three hundred gold coins for his own purse while swearing by the sun that the peasants were too poor to pay—the medallion woke from its long slumber.

The ice pierced through his velvet tunic like six iron daggers, freezing his ribs until his breath turned to white frost. The three copper spirals burned his skin with blistered lines of fire, and the stag beads began to chatter with a sound so terrible and loud, like a thousand dry bones falling on stone, that the guards and the high judges covered their ears. In his agony, Klemens fell upon his belly on the marble flags, screaming his own crimes and naming every bribe he had hidden inside his saddlebags, unable to endure the agony of the frost until the royal marshals dragged him away to the deep stone cells.

The talisman fell upon the floor of the palace, untouched by the frightened magistrates, until a nameless courier of the wild post picked it up by the sinew cord and carried it away into the safety of the northern moss.

Moral of the Story: The tongue of man can paint a thousand fair houses upon the air, but the quiet spirit of the tree remembers the root; he who carries the truth needs no shield against the sword, while he who walks in deceit will find that the stone upon his breast becomes the judge that breaks his bones.

In the center, a thumb-sized violet stone sits within three deeply carved spirals filled with hammered copper shavings and soot. Three hollow grouse bone beads dangle from the bottom rim, and an antique iron pin fastens the talisman to clothing. • Item Type: Unique Shamanic Focus / Hyperborean Protective Ward
  • Sanity Cost: 0 to carry or wear; 1 Sanity point whenever the central crystal freezes the wearer’s flesh to expose a severe or mind-shattering deception.
  • Powers and Mechanics:
    • Spiritual Eavesdrop Dampener: The talisman creates a quiet, localized acoustic dead zone. The wearer gains a Bonus Die on Stealth checks made to converse privately or move without vocal detection. Anyone attempting to eavesdrop on the wearer through keyholes, walls, or directional listening equipment suffers a Penalty Die on their Listen checks.
    • Sense the Crooked Tongue: Whenever a person speaks a deliberate, intentional falsehood directly to the wearer within 10 feet, the user makes an immediate Psychology check with a Bonus Die. • Scrying and Tracking Ward: Anyone attempting to track the bearer using scent-based tracking (such as hounds) or supernatural scrying/divination spells suffers a Penalty Die. The bearer’s trail is masked by the overwhelming scent of rain-soaked spruce and ozone.
    • Backlash of the False Heart: If an individual who is currently wearing or carrying the talisman attempts to utter an intentional, self-serving lie during a formal proceeding or hostile interrogation, the talisman retaliates. • Mechanics and Operation:
    • Muffled Murmurs (Passive): When you and your crew confer in private within immediate distance of the brooch, all spoken words are completely deadened to anyone outside that perimeter. Eavesdroppers attempting to listen through doors, floorboards, or vents operate with Zero Effect unless they deploy specialized ghost-field amplification or listening devices.
    • Sense Deceit (Action: Insight or Attune): When engaged in tense negotiations, interrogations, or social intrigue, you may push yourself (taking 2 Stress) to attune to the brooch’s copper spirals. For the rest of the scene, whenever an NPC utters a deliberate falsehood or conceals crucial operational information from you, the bone beads clatter and a sharp chill bites your chest. You immediately detect the deception and gain +1 Effect on your next action to press, corner, or counter them.
    • Scentless Ghost-Wash (Action: Prowl): When fleeing hunting hounds, Bluecoat search parties, or supernatural tracking entities, you may spend 1 Stress to strike the wooden disc. Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)

Talisman of the Whispering Birch

  • Wondrous Item, Common
  • Item Properties:
    • Weight: 0.5 lb.
    • Attunement: Requires attunement by a creature proficient in Deception, Insight, or Survival.
  • Item Traits:
    • Acoustic Ward: While this talisman is worn openly on your chest or attached to a sash, your private spoken conversations cannot be overheard by creatures more than 10 feet away from you, unless they use magical amplification.
    • Wight’s Vigilance: You gain a +1 bonus to passive Wisdom (Perception) and passive Wisdom (Insight). Additionally, you instinctively know if a creature within 30 feet of you is actively observing you from stealth or through mundane disguise, though you do not automatically pinpoint their exact location.
    • Charges: The talisman has 3 charges. It regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the birch bark dries and cracks, rendering the item nonmagical until submerged in natural tree sap for 24 hours.
  • Actions and Spells:
    • Detect Falsehood (1 Charge): As an action, you touch the copper spiral in the center of the medallion. For the next 10 minutes, whenever a creature within 15 feet of you speaks a deliberate lie, the central crystal pulses with cold against your skin, and the bone beads click softly. You discern that the statement was a lie, but not the truth behind it.
    • Scentless Escape (1 Charge): As a bonus action, you tap the medallion against your body. All nonmagical scents, tracking pheromones, and trail markers on you and your gear are instantly neutralized, replaced by the scent of fresh birch shavings and rain. For the next 1 hour, Wisdom (Perception) checks made to track you by scent have disadvantage.
    • False Stature (1 Charge): As an action, you invoke the tree spirits to mask your presence. For the next 1 hour, spells and magical effects that inspect your alignment, creature type, or challenge level (such as detect evil and good or similar divination magic) register you as an ordinary, unaligned humanoid commoner.

    • Sniff Out Lies: When interrogating or negotiating with an NPC, the wielder may make a WIS check to test the truth of their claims. If the NPC is lying, the brooch chills the wielder’s ribs, granting advantage on this check and alerting the wielder to the falsehood.
    • Scrying and Scent Purge: The wielder may expend 1 point of Quality from the brooch to immediately scrub away all physical scents, bloodhounds’ scent trails, and minor divination scrying sensors from their person, covering their tracks in the scent of fresh pine and clean rain.
