- Lore:
- In the grand sovereign halls of Saṃsāra, royal chancellors, bailiffs, and high magistrates must navigate an endless web of forged treaties, poisoned decrees, and masked court perjuries.
- To maintain order without relying on corrupt human informers, northern court magistrates turned to the traditions of the noaidi, commissioning signet stamps imbued with animist truth-wights.
- Carved from the naturally shed antler crowns of revered herd-leading white reindeer, each ring serves as both an instrument of bureaucratic authority and a direct spiritual conduit to ancestral arbiters.
- When a royal official stamps the wax of a proclamation, the bound herd spirit examines the intent of the scribe, ensuring the sovereign’s written decrees cannot be secretly corrupted or forged.
- Over centuries of administrative intrigue, court officials have used these signets to test the veracity of petitions, silence unruly claimants, and unveil clandestine conspiracies before the high council.
- Description:
- A broad, ceremonial thumb ring carved from a single, dense segment of bleached white reindeer crown-antler, hand-buffed to an ivory luster and banded with beaten mountain copper along its inner rim.
- The flat oval face of the signet features a deeply incised noaidi sun-cross enclosed within an arching northern administrative seal, flanked by miniature glyphs representing earth, bone, and ancestral memory.
- Embedded directly beneath the engraved sun-cross matrix is a thumb-nail sized, uncut Tier 1 magic crystal that emanates a faint, rhythmic amber glow when pressed against paper or heated seal wax.
- Two fine cords of braided crimson wool and cured ermine fur wrap the ring’s lower shank, ending in a tiny suspension loop tipped with a pair of dried juniper beads and a polished lynx claw.
- When brought close to warm wax, a faint trail of pale amber vapor coils out from the carved lines, smelling subtly of scorched pine resin and frozen tundra earth.
- Detailed Stats:
- Item Tier: Tier 1 (Common)
- Item HP: Avatar maximum HP plus 8
- Resilience: 8
- Armor Check (AC): +1 AC to the avatar when worn openly on the thumb or hand (a subtle spirit-lattice deflects deflected cuts and minor projectile grazes directed toward the bureaucrat)
- Weight: 0.2 pounds
- Attunement: Simple attunement (requires spending one uninterrupted short rest heating the seal over a bowl of burning juniper needles and pressing a personal wax seal while reciting a solemn oath of imperial administrative truth)
- Slot:
- Finger (Thumb or Index Finger), or Neck (suspended via cord)
- Passives Magic:
- Incorruptible Seal: Any document, parchment, or letter stamped by the signet’s face cannot be altered, forged, or magically disguised without the wax seal immediately turning pitch black and crumbling into dry ash.
- Chancellery Authority: The ancestral herd spirit projects an aura of measured administrative weight; lower-ranking court retainers, guards, and functionaries instinctively treat the wearer’s formal commands, decrees, and bureaucratic questions with unquestioning respect.
- Aura of Scrutiny: While the signet is worn, the bearer passively senses when a written document or physical legal contract handed directly to them contains falsified signatures, forged stamps, or erased clauses, feeling a distinct prick of cold needle-frost across their thumb.
- Activable Magics:
- Oath of the Tundra Sun (Normal Somatic):
- Taking an action to press the warm copper rim or face of the signet firmly against an individual’s open palm or forehead while speaking a formal administrative inquiry for less than six seconds.
- The target humanoid must succeed on a spiritual resistance test or be compelled to answer the single administrative question truthfully; if the target attempts an outright falsehood, their throat constricts, rendering them completely mute for 1 round.
- Expends 1 charge from the crystal core; the crystal regains its charge after a long rest or ambient arcane flow recovery.
- Divining the Hidden Ledger (Ritual, Somatic):
- Taking an action to place the signet face-down upon a sealed ledger, parchment roll, or treaty box, dusting the ring with a pinch of dry juniper ash, and reciting an ancestral noaidi oath for greater than six seconds.
- Over two continuous minutes of ritual examination, the amber crystal pulses softly, projecting glowing spirit-runes that summarize the true financial debts, secret bribes, or hidden ownership names tied to the document without needing to open or break the physical container.
- Concussive Writ of Decree (Silent Action):
- The official sharply raps the antler signet downward against a hard tabletop, stone floor, or wooden balustrade without uttering a word.
- A concentrated 10-foot cone of concussive ancestral authority erupts outward from the point of impact; aggressive claimants, brawling nobles, or rushing intruders in the path are knocked back three paces and disoriented, allowing the magistrate to command the room or retreat behind imperial guards.

- Fair barter value equals roughly 85 to 110 silver coins worth of northern goods, with trade-back offers yielding around 40 to 50 silver coins in commodities.
Operational Protocol of the Chancellor’s Reindeer-Antler Signet Across Diverse Environments
- High Imperial Chanceries and Sovereign Council Chambers:
- During high-stakes council debates where rival ministers present forged treaties or manipulate tax allocations, open accusation invites immediate treason charges. Defensively, the official sits silently with hands folded over open ledgers, leaning on Aura of Scrutiny. When an ambassador hands over a peace pact or troop bill, the bearer feels the icy sting of needle-frost across their thumb, instantly identifying altered dates or hidden indemnity clauses before endorsing them, while Chancellery Authority shields the official from intimidation by haughty nobles.
- Offensively before the throne, when a treasonous minister denies embezzling imperial grain funds, the official invokes Divining the Hidden Ledger over the locked ledgers, projecting glowing spirit-runes that lay bare the true bribes and secret accounts for the assembly to witness. If the cornered traitor reaches for a hidden stiletto or summons personal bodyguards to storm the chamber, the official raps the antler signet sharply down onto the council table for a Concussive Writ of Decree, releasing a kinetic shockwave that slams the guards against the chamber doors and pins the usurper to the wall.
- Crowded Harbor Customhouses and Smuggler Basements:
- Within salt-stained docks, registry depots, and clandestine harbor vaults where maritime cartels bribe inspectors and forge quarantine clearance papers, brandishing weapons draws dockside enforcers. Defensively, the official wears the signet openly on the thumb while inspecting cargo manifests. If a smuggler presents an ostensibly legal bill of lading concealing contraband weapons, Aura of Scrutiny flashes cold. Any document the official stamps with an Incorruptible Seal immediately turns to black ash if warehouse guards attempt to rewrite cargo weights later that night.
- Offensively inside a dim wharf office, when confronting an evasive harbor-master about unregistered black-market galleasses, the magistrate closes the distance and presses the signet’s warm copper rim against the harbor-master’s palm to trigger Oath of the Tundra Sun. Compelled by the herd wights, the harbor-master must name the syndicate paymaster; if he attempts to recite a rehearsed cover story, his throat seizes shut, leaving him gasping for air until he complies.
- Frontier Garrisons and Outlaw Boundary Posts:
- In lawless borderland fortresses and remote logging outposts where corrupt mercenary captains claim false jurisdiction and extract illegal tariffs, lone bureaucrats are vulnerable to assassination. Defensively, the official presents imperial writs sealed with the signet. The aura of Chancellery Authority imposes quiet dread upon rough-hewn sellswords, compelling them to lower their crossbows and grant legal access to the garrison vaults, while the signet’s passive spirit lattice adds an armor cushion against hidden projectile attacks.
- Offensively when a mutinous mercenary captain attempts to tear up an imperial audit decree and order his men to seize the treasury, the official delivers a Concussive Writ of Decree against the iron strongbox lid. The resulting concussive shockwave hurls the captain and his front-rank thugs into the armory racks, disorienting them long enough for loyalist retainers to secure the armaments and enforce martial arrest.
- Subterranean Crypts and Forbidden Royal Archives:
- Deep within forgotten dynastic vaults, ancestral tombs, and subterranean record labyrinths where animated skeletons or tomb raiders desecrate historic records, survival requires swift deciphering and kinetic space control. Defensively, the official utilizes the amber crystal within the sun-cross face as an ancestral compass, using Divining the Hidden Ledger over sealed stone sarcophagi and iron caskets to ascertain which tombs house historical records and which are wired with explosive pressure traps, bypassing dangers without tampering with ancient wards.
- Offensively when cornered in a narrow stone corridor by pursuing grave-robbers or tomb ghouls, the official drops to one knee and raps the antler ring against the flagstones. The Concussive Writ of Decree erupts through the tight stone passage, blasting the attackers backward into iron grates and buying vital time to bar the vault gates.
- Northern Fjord Moots and Tundra Arbitration Camps:
- Across wind-scoured northern heaths where clan chieftains assemble around winter fire-trenches to settle blood feuds and pasture boundaries, formal imperial law is often met with fierce animosity. Defensively, the official displays the ring’s bleached reindeer crown-antler and lynx claw. Northern elders and clan noaidis immediately recognize the sacred materials and herd-spirit bond, according the official the status of a holy arbiter and protecting them from clan violence.
- Offensively when an aggressive clan leader attempts to claim another clan’s hunting pastures through false ancestral claims, the magistrate initiates the Oath of the Tundra Sun, pressing the sun-cross against the chieftain’s brow before the gathered moot. The bound truth-wights choke back the false testimony, forcing the chieftain to speak the true winter borders or choke in silence before his own peers, settling the dispute without shedding blood on ancestral land.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective:
- Visual Perception: The moment the signet is pressed down or invoked, the raw amber crystal embedded beneath the sun-cross flares with a warm, steady golden-orange light. Fine, luminous spirit-runes trace along the engraved border, casting a glowing seal of radiant geometric script across the document or target’s flesh, while a curling ribbon of pale amber vapor rises lazily from the antler face.
- Auditory Perception: A heavy, resonant sound fills the official’s inner ear—the deep, rhythmic crunch of hooves galloping across hard-packed frozen crust, followed by the dry, solemn tap of a courtroom gavel echoing in an ancient hall.
- Tactile Perception: The inner copper band heats up to a comfortable, feverish warmth that pulses in exact synchronization with the user’s heartbeat. A sharp, prickling sensation—resembling fine needle-frost—skitters across the user’s thumb whenever deceit or a forged clause is present, followed by a grounded, steadying weight that firms their grip.
- Olfactory Perception: A sharp, clean scent of crushed juniper berries, charred spruce resin, and fresh tundra soil drifts upward, instantly clearing the nostrils of stale parchment dust, rancid lamp tallow, and sweat.
- Gustatory Perception: A dry, mineral sharpness touches the back of the throat, reminiscent of breathing sub-zero mountain air after drinking strong, unboiled cedar tea.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Ancestral Juridical Weight: The wearer feels an overwhelming sense of ancient communal authority settling over their consciousness, as if the unyielding gazes of a thousand deceased clan arbiters stand directly behind their shoulders to weigh the truth of the spoken words.
- Audit Sense: When viewing ledgers or contracts, the user’s mind perceives discrepancies and hidden clauses as dark, greasy stains floating above the physical page, making fraudulent additions stand out in vivid contrast.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Visual Perception: Onlookers see the magistrate’s antler ring ignite with an unmistakable amber luminescence that casts sharp, elongated shadows across the room. As the signet meets paper or flesh, a distinct golden vapor wreaths the official’s hand, leaving a sharp, glowing sun-cross imprint that slowly sinks into the surface.
- Auditory Perception: A sudden acoustic deadening falls over the chamber, cutting through ambient crowd noise like a heavy wool blanket. When the signet raps down, the impact produces an unnaturally loud, hollow crack that vibrates deep within the chest cavities of everyone present.
- Tactile Perception: Those standing within arm’s reach feel an abrupt spike in atmospheric pressure accompanied by a wave of dry heat, similar to the sudden breath of a roaring hearth damper being opened in a drafty room.
- Olfactory Perception: A pungent, medicinal draft of burning juniper needles and hot pitch washes outward, lingering in the clothing and hair of those nearby.
- Gustatory Perception: Observers feel a dry, chalky taste coating their tongues, causing their mouths to feel suddenly parched if they are withholding testimony.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Compelled Rectitude: Hostile claimants and witnesses experience a crushing sensation of legal exposure; their defenses feel stripped away, leaving an instinctive certainty that any attempted falsehood will be immediately recognized and publicly laid bare.
- Vocal Constriction: An individual attempting to lie under the signet’s scrutiny feels an invisible band tighten around their windpipe, making their voice seize up in their throat.
- Positives:
- Instant Deceit Extraction: The signet effortlessly cuts through elaborate court perjuries, bribes, and false testimonies without requiring physical torture or lethal coercion.
- Permanent Anti-Forgery Protection: Once sealed, administrative decrees cannot be tampered with or altered by rival scribes, guaranteeing the absolute integrity of official communiques.
- Immediate Space Control: In volatile council brawls or assassination attempts, the kinetic shockwave delivers instantaneous defensive space control without needing to draw steel or violate chancellery decorum.
- Negatives:
- Blatant Visual Signature: The intense amber flare and rising coiling smoke make clandestine truth-seeking impossible; everyone in the room knows the magistrate is actively utilizing animist compulsion.
- Physical Contact Requirement: Extracting direct spoken truth through the signet requires the user to physically touch the subject’s palm or brow, forcing the official to step into close melee reach of potentially dangerous suspects.
- Bureaucratic Rigidity: The truth-wights bound to the antler demand absolute rectitude; if the wearer attempts to forge a document or speak a calculated falsehood while wearing the ring, the inner copper band turns icy cold, inflicting sharp pain and breaking the item’s attunement.
Crafting Recipe: The Chancellor’s Reindeer-Antler Signet
- Materials Needed:
- One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (thumb-nail sized, uncut, resonant with earth or truth spirit ichor, harvested from a high tundra creature or ancient peat deposit).
- A 3-inch section of dense, naturally shed crown-antler from an elder white reindeer bull, air-cured for at least one full winter.
- A 3-inch strip of beaten native mountain copper sheet, one-sixteenth of an inch thick.
- Two matched dried juniper beads, pierced through the center.
- One cleaned and polished lynx claw.
- One yard of spun crimson sheep’s wool yarn braided with narrow strips of white ermine winter fur.
- One fluid dram of natural pine pitch mixed with powdered bone-glue.
- Half an ounce of dried juniper needles and dry moss for ritual smudging.
- A small cake of refined red or natural beeswax for test impressions.
- Tools Required:
- A fine carver’s coping saw or bone saw.
- A set of hardened steel micro-burins, gouges, and diamond-point gravers for intaglio seal engraving.
- An expanding ring mandrel, planishing hammer, and copper shears.
- A set of fine needle files and dried horsetail rushes (or fine pumice slurry) for polishing.
- A hand auger with fine-gauge drill bits.
- A small clay brazier, iron tongs, and a copper soldering or annealing bowl.
- Skill Requirements:
- Trained Skill Level 4 or higher in Jewelry Crafting, Scrimshaw/Bone Carving, or Engraving Artifice.
- Practical grounding in Sámi noaidi legal traditions, truth-binding oaths, and ancestral spirit communion.
- Basic competence in sheet-metal annealing, ring sizing, and intaglio seal cutting.
- Crafting Steps:
- Step 1: Blank Cutting and Antler Preparation
- Take the cured white reindeer crown-antler and cut a clean, 1.5-inch cylindrical cross-section using the fine bone saw, selecting a section with dense, non-porous outer walling.
- File and true both ends, shaping the exterior into an elongated thumb ring with an oversized, flat oval face suitable for intaglio matrix engraving.
- Use needle files and rasps to hollow the inner diameter to match the wearer’s thumb or index finger, leaving sufficient wall thickness to maintain structural resilience.
- Hollow a small, recessed interior socket directly behind the planned seal face to house the amber focus crystal.
- Step 2: Copper Lining and Core Assembly
- Anneal the strip of native mountain copper over the brazier until dull red, quench in clean water, and shear to the exact inner circumference of the antler ring.
- Curve the copper strip around the ring mandrel and flare its edges slightly to create a smooth, friction-fit inner sleeve that lines the inside of the antler ring.
- Seat the thumb-nail sized Tier 1 amber magic crystal into the interior socket behind the face, securing its seating with a drop of warm pine pitch.
- Slide the copper sleeve into the ring over the back of the crystal socket, staking and burnishing the copper edges flush against the antler rims so the metal band holds the stone permanently locked inside the bone housing.
- Step 3: Intaglio Seal Engraving
- Coat the flat oval antler face with a thin layer of soot or charcoal wash to highlight cutting lines.
- Use sharp diamond-point gravers to cut the mirrored, deep-relief matrix of the noaidi sun-cross into the center of the antler face, ensuring the cuts reach deep enough to reveal the warm glow of the embedded amber stone beneath.
- Carve the surrounding administrative arc and flanking runic glyphs for earth, bone, and ancestral memory around the outer perimeter of the seal.
- Polish the raised outer face with dried rushes and pumice, leaving the deeply engraved lines frosted and sharp to cleanly take and release hot sealing wax without sticking.
- Step 4: Cord Braiding and Claw Attachment
- Drill a tiny, one-sixteenth-inch anchor hole through the lower shank of the antler ring opposite the seal face.
- Tightly wrap the base shank with the braided crimson wool and ermine fur cord, securing the wrap through the anchor hole.
- Leave two dangling 3-inch tail cords below the shank; thread a dried juniper bead onto each cord.
- Terminate one cord with a traditional loop knot and lash the polished lynx claw to the end of the second cord using waxed sinew.
- Step 5: Consecration and Animist Oath-Binding
- Place the completed signet upon a flat stone slab beside the small brazier at dusk.
- Cast the dried juniper needles and moss onto the hot coals to generate a thick, fragrant aromatic smoke.
- Pass the signet through the juniper smoke forty-nine times while speaking an ancestral noaidi oath of administrative truth and uncorrupted judgment.
- Melt a small pool of red beeswax onto parchment and firmly strike the signet’s face into the wax while holding the seal steady; maintain contact until the wax cools.
- Conclude the rite as the bound amber crystal pulses with a warm, steady golden light through the engraved sun-cross lines and a faint trail of amber smoke rises from the matrix, confirming the truth-wight’s binding to the ring.
- Step 1: Blank Cutting and Antler Preparation
White Horn Circle That Binds Mouth of Greasy-Handed Scribe
In the time when the three suns of Saṃsāra had melted into one great yellow eyeball, and the ice was yet soft like sheep-butter in the month of warm rain, the sovereign lord of the High Pillar Island had seventy-two cellars full of barley, but he possessed not one single true word. His name was Master-of-Spears Brodir of the Iron Tooth. His ears were very large, like the dried hides of mountain goats, but they were stuffed with the fat of roast geese so that no voice of a weeping peasant could go into his head.
Brodir had a great house of split pine where nine scribes sat upon stools of birch. The scribes had fingers that were long and black like the claws of river crabs, because they dipped their quills forty times in an hour into pots of dark gall-nut broth. When a poor man came from the moss bringing his three milk-ewes for the seasonal tally, the chief scribe, whose name was Glum of the Crooked Sleeve, would take a scraped skin of calf and write upon it with his black water: “Behold, this beggar brings only one three-legged goat, and he owes unto the Iron Tooth forty jars of oil and his oldest daughter’s wedding ring.” And if the poor man cried out that his ewes were three and had four legs apiece, Brodir of the Iron Tooth would strike his iron knee with his fist and roar: “The skin has spoken! The skin has no tongue to lie, therefore take off the ears of this beggar and drive his three-legged goat into my shed!”
Thus it was that the granaries of Brodir were full of flour, but the people ate the bitter bark of the alder tree and boiled old leather thongs in ditch-water.
Now in the high stony wastes where the northern wind bites the rocks until they crumble into sand, there lived a silent person named Niilas of the Cold Hearth. Niilas was a noaidi who had never washed his face in the milk of sheep, but only in the melt-water of the high glacier. He did not talk with men, because men had words that twisted like eels in the eel-grass; he talked only with the great white reindeer bull that walked through the snow-drifts without breaking the white crust.
In the forty-fourth winter of Brodir’s reign, the great white bull came to the door of Niilas’s turf-hut. The bull was so old that yellow moss grew upon its front legs, and its breath smelled like the dry lichen that sleeps under five spans of frost. The bull knelt down upon its knees in the door-trench and laid its right horn against the door-stone.
“Old singer of the wind,” said the bull through its nostrils, while the frost came out like wool, “the earth in the low valleys has turned sour because of the black water that falls from the goose-quills of Glum of the Crooked Sleeve. The small spirits that live inside the parchment are crying because they are made to carry the shape of stolen goats and burned barns. Cut off the top crown of my right antler with an elk-bone saw, for my time has come to walk down into the gray sea where the sun sleeps.”
So Niilas went out into the gale. He took no iron knife, for iron makes the wights of the bone shudder and go cold. He took a saw made of the dry shin-bone of an elk, and he sawed through the white antler until the crown came away into his hands like a round loaf of barley-bread. As soon as the bone was severed, the great white bull turned into a cloud of dry, blowing snow and flew over the rocks toward the salt ocean.
Niilas sat down upon his heels for eleven days before his hearth-stone. He took an auger made of flint-stone and bored a hole through the antler until it would fit upon the great thumb of an arbiter. Inside the belly of the bone he scooped a little chamber, smooth like the inside of a hazelnut, and therein he placed an amber stone that had been taken from the stomach of a salmon that died while jumping over the northern moon. Around the stone he hammered a band of red mountain copper that had never felt the strike of an iron hammer, but had been beaten thin between two round river-pebbles.
Upon the flat face of the antler thumb-piece, Niilas scratched the four-cornered cross of the sun, and around the cross he cut the signs of the reindeer hoof, the badger’s tooth, and the quiet eye of the dead mother. From the shank he hung two beads of dry juniper wood and the long, sharp claw of a lynx that had died of watching the stars.
When the ring was finished, Niilas blew three times upon the amber face. The stone inside woke up like a live coal in a pot of dry leaves. It cast an amber light upon the turf walls, and the room became warm and smelled of crushed spruce needles and the blood of clean animals.
Niilas tucked his hands into his sleeves and walked down the mountain path until he came to the high timber gate of Brodir of the Iron Tooth.
It was the great day of the Winter Audit. The great hall of split pine was full of the smoke of tallow grease and the stink of fifty frightened peasants who stood in their wet sheepskin shoes before the long bench of the scribes. Brodir sat upon his high seat with an iron club across his fat thighs, chewing a cold pork-knuckle and spitting the small bones into the beard of his dog.
Glum of the Crooked Sleeve stood upon a platform of planks, holding up a great rolled skin of calf that was five cubits long.
“Hearken, all ye small people of the ditch!” cried Glum, and his voice was like two dry shingles scraped together in the wind. “Here is written the roll of the sovereign debt. The village of the Birch-Water owes sixty bullocks, forty-two jars of salted seal-meat, and nine virgins with yellow hair to sew the King’s winter boots! Whosoever says this is not the truth shall have his tongue nailed to the gate-post with an iron awl!”
The village headman, an old man whose knees knocked together like hazel sticks, fell upon his face in the floor-grease. “Lord!” he cried through his gray beard. “We have no bullocks! The wolves ate our cows in the month of the red ice, and our daughters have only gray rags to cover their knees! How can we give sixty bullocks when there are only four goats in all the town?”
“The skin is dark with words!” bellowed Brodir of the Iron Tooth, shaking his pork-knuckle at the rafters. “The skin cannot lie! The ink is dry, and my iron club is hungry! If the bullocks do not come before the moon turns on its back, I will make grease of thy grandchildren!”
At that moment, Niilas stepped through the open door. He did not take off his birch-bark cap; he did not bow his head to the iron club. He walked straight down the center trench between the spit-pans, his white antler ring shining upon his right thumb like a low morning star.
Glum of the Crooked Sleeve saw him coming and pointed his black quill at him. “Who is this gray beggar from the stones? Has he brought his barley-tally? Seize his arms and search his boots for hidden silver!”
Niilas did not speak. He came to the long wooden table where Glum’s calf-skin roll lay spread out beside the ink-pot. He raised his right hand and struck the flat face of the white antler signet down upon the parchment right across the line of the sixty bullocks.
CLACK!
The sound was not like the sound of bone striking wood. It was like the crack of five spans of winter ice splitting across the mouth of a great fjord.
A great wave of amber light flared outward from the ring, bright and blinding like the noon sun upon a field of fresh snow. The nine scribes screamed and covered their eyes with their sleeves, for the light burned their eyeballs like hot salt.
And behold, where the white antler pressed the calf-skin, the black ink began to sizzle and boil like pig-fat in a hot pan. The letters that Glum had written did not stay straight; they twisted like black worms that have been dropped into the hearth-fire. The word bullocks melted away into a foul yellow grease; the word virgins turned into the color of ditch-mud; and across the parchment there rose up the true shape of the skin: the red brand of the cow-tax that had been paid in full three winters before, and the mark of Glum’s own seal where he had taken thirty bullocks for his own sister’s sons and hidden them in the deep alder swamp.
The parchment began to smoke with a pale yellow smoke that smelled of burned sheep-droppings and mountain juniper.
Brodir of the Iron Tooth dropped his pork-knuckle into the dust. He stood up from his high seat, his iron boots creaking on the pine boards. “What is this witch-smoke in my clean house? Glum, thou son of an owl, what didst thou write upon this skin?”
Glum’s mouth fell open, but no words came forth. His throat was full of dry wind, for the lynx claw upon Niilas’s ring was trembling, and the amber stone was glowing with a great heat.
Niilas stepped up to the platform. He reached out his right hand and pressed the warm copper rim of the signet firmly against Glum’s forehead, right between his two squinting eyes.
“Speak now,” said Niilas, and his voice was like the sound of two round stones grinding together at the bottom of a river. “Tell the master of the iron club what thy black water was made of, and tell him whose grass is eaten by the sixty bullocks.”
Glum tried to spit out a lie. He tried to say that the headman of Birch-Water was an eater of carrion and a stealer of corn. But the truth-wight of the old white reindeer was sitting upon his neck like a bag of wet stones. His tongue swelled in his teeth; his ears turned as red as boiled crayfish; and against his will, his mouth flew open and began to vomit the truth before the whole assembly:
“I am a thief of thirty winters!” screamed Glum, while the tears washed two white channels through the ink-soot on his nose. “I took the sixty bullocks and drove them into my brother’s valley behind the hill of the red foxes! I took forty baskets of flour from the widow of the harbor and said the rats had eaten it! I put sheep-grease upon the parchment to make the names of the dead men stay on the roll so that I might eat their cheese! The Iron Tooth is an ox who cannot read his own name, and I have made him my calf who drinks only what I pour into his trough!”
The forty captains in their ringed iron coats stood with their mouths hanging open. The old peasants fell upon their knees, not in fear, but in great wonder, while the forty-nine village headmen began to murmur like the bees in the summer moss.
Brodir of the Iron Tooth stood upon his platform. His neck was as red as a slaughtered cock, and his breath came through his teeth with a great whistling noise. He looked at the smoking parchment where the false ink had turned to ash; he looked at Glum who was rolling upon the floor, biting his own thumbs in shame; and he looked at the little ring of white reindeer antler upon the thumb of the noaidi.
The great chief slowly took his iron club and laid it upon the table. He took Glum of the Crooked Sleeve by the belt of his tunic, lifted him up like a bag of rotten turnips, and threw him through the split-pine window into the pig-mire below, where the great sows chased him into the bramble bushes.
Then Brodir took a pot of clean white milk and poured it over Niilas’s boots, which is the custom of the northern island when an arbiter of true blood walks through the door.
“Take the bench of the scribes,” said the King, and his voice was small and dry like the voice of a little child who has been lost in the fog. “Take the nine stools and the black pots, and let no skin be stamped in this seventy-three lands unless thy white ring has first smelled the wax.”
Niilas did not take the nine stools; he did not sit upon the soft cushions of the chancellery. He took only three pieces of dried seal-meat from the meat-dish and gave the white antler ring into the hand of the oldest headman of the village.
“Keep the ring upon the thumb of the village judge,” said Niilas to the people. “When a great man brings a skin with black marks upon it, do not look at his iron club and do not listen to his high words. Press the white bone into the hot resin, and if the stone turns gray, drive the scribe into the sea; but if the amber burns like the rising sun, pay the four pennies of the tax and sleep in peace beside the hearth-fire.”
Then Niilas went back into the high mountains where the frost does not melt, and for thirty winters the scribes of Brodir were very thin, because their quills had forgotten how to write the names of the bullocks that were not in the field.
Moral of the Story: The sharp spear of the tyrant may take away the skin of the sheep and the bread of the child, but a single circle of the true bone will burn away ten thousand lies; for the written word of the crooked scribe is only mud upon dry grass, while the silent witness of the truth-wight endures longer than the stone pillars of the palace.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)
Niilas’s Reindeer-Antler Signet of the Ancestral Inquest
- Description: A broad, ceremonial thumb ring carved from a single segment of dense white reindeer crown-antler, lined with beaten mountain copper and etched with a noaidi sun-cross. Embedded behind the matrix is a raw amber crystal that pulses with a golden glow when pressed to wax or skin. Braided crimson wool and ermine fur bind the shank, hanging a polished lynx claw and two dried juniper beads.
- Item Type: Unique Shamanic Focus / Animist Truth Relic
- Sanity Cost: 0 to carry or inspect; 1 Sanity point upon witnessing the ring force uncontrollable confession from a target or project concussive physical shockwaves.
- Powers and Mechanics:
- Incorruptible Seal (Passive): Official documents stamped by this signet are mystically bound. Any subsequent attempt to alter, forge, or forge-erase text causes the seal to char to black ash, instantly alerting the reader to the fraud.
- Chancellery Authority (Passive): The wearer projects a subtle, imposing aura of bureaucratic legitimacy. The user gains a Bonus Die on Law, Intimidate, and Credit Rating checks made to question retainers, review municipal files, or bypass lower-ranking court sentries.
- Aura of Scrutiny (Passive): When inspecting physical documents, ledgers, or signed declarations, the bearer receives a Bonus Die on Accounting, Library Use, or Spot Hidden rolls made to uncover forged handwriting, hidden accounting deficits, or erased clauses.
- Oath of the Tundra Sun (Active): As an action, the bearer expends 3 Magic Points and presses the copper rim firmly to the brow or palm of a restrained or willing subject, demanding an answer to a single formal question. The target must make an Extreme POW check. On a failure, the subject is compelled to answer truthfully; attempting to lie causes their vocal cords to seize, rendering them mute for 1D4 rounds.
- Divining the Hidden Ledger (Active): Over 2 minutes of quiet focus and an expenditure of 4 Magic Points, the bearer dusts the signet with juniper ash and sets it atop a locked ledger, deed-box, or treaty. Glowing spirit-runes rise above the container, summarizing hidden debts, real names of anonymous beneficiaries, or concealed bribes inside without opening it.
- Concussive Writ of Decree (Active): As an immediate defensive reaction when charged or cornered, the user expends 3 Magic Points and strikes the signet flat against a hard table, floor, or balustrade. A 3-yard cone of concussive force erupts from the point of impact; all hostile targets in the area must pass a Hard CON or STR check or be hurled backward 3 yards and knocked prone, losing their next action.
