Lore During the early years of the Age of First People, sea-faring voyagers traveling between the 73 island continents learned that the shifting currents and the unusual celestial paths around VaporSphere made conventional dead reckoning treacherous. Eldest shamans carved fine needles from the dense ribs of ocean leviathans that had perished near ancient reefs. These items were dipped into sacred saps collected from coastal ironwood trees and exposed to starlight during the week of Illumination. Bound to the quiet, lingering spirits of ancient pelagic voyagers who traversed the east-to-west swells millennia ago, the needle serves as an anchor between the physical currents and the ethereal guides residing within the oceanic weave.
Description The item consists of a six-inch, polished ivory needle carved with delicate spiraling grooves that mimic tidal eddies. A thin braid of dried sea-grass is looped through its eye, allowing it to dangle freely or rest flat across an open palm. When attuned, the bone emits a faint, translucent blue luminescence from its carved grooves. When held over still water, the needle does not float by mundane surface tension alone; instead, it hovers a fraction of an inch above the liquid, orienting itself steadily regardless of vessel roll or stormy conditions.

Passives Magic
- Whispers of the Deep Swell: While worn or held, the avatar innately senses the primary east-to-west ocean currents and surface poleward drift within a 5-mile radius, gaining clarity on natural drift without needing physical instruments.
- Spirit-Lit Horizon: The avatar receives a passive clarity bonus through their Mind’s Eye when reading natural celestial markers, such as the position of Helios and the gas giant VaporSphere, even through light fog or overcast skies.
Activable Magics
- Communion of the Drift (Action): The avatar submerses the tip of the needle into open water or a water skin and whispers an inquiry to the local sea spirits. The spirits guide the needle to rotate and point toward the nearest safe reef passage, calm inlet, or shallow sandbar within 10 miles. This effect lasts for 1 hour.
- Ancestral Wake Chant (Ritual Action): By chanting in a steady rhythm for at least 6 seconds while exposing the needle to the open air, the avatar invites nearby wandering sea spirits to shield a waterborne vessel or mount from directional confusion. For the next 4 hours, any navigational checks made to resist magical disorientation or natural vortex currents are made with advantage.
- Spiritual Beacon (Reaction): When an unexpected fog bank or magical obstruction suddenly obscures vision, the avatar can trigger the needle to flare with soft spectral light. This immediately projects the exact heading toward the vessel’s last known bound port for 1 minute.

Acquisition, Trade Outlets, and Marketplace Valuation of Navigational 417 of the Wayfinder’s Bone Needle
- Coastal Chandleries and Harbor Shaman Dens:
- In bustling coastal cities across island countries like Lapita, Phoenicia, and Aegean, this item is commonly traded in small, family-owned maritime shops, wharf-side chandleries, and seaside spirit shrines.
- These establishments are run by local bone-carvers, retired voyagers, or animist shamans who hand-etch the whalebone and infuse them with harvested coastal saps.
- Because there is no set baseline price and the economy operate strictly on a sellers’ market with buyer beware, the suggested purchase price from an open-market vendor is 10 silver (equivalent to 1 gold or 2 electrum), which is the standard baseline value for Tier 1 items.
- When an avatar attempts to buy from a legitimate NPC merchant, they must pay the full asking price of 10 silver unless they openly display membership in the local Sailor’s Guild, Fishermen’s Syndicate, or Wayfinders’ Faction, which grants a 10% discount per character tier level (1 silver off at Tier 1, making the cost 9 silver).
- When selling this item to a legitimate NPC merchant, the shopkeeper will haggle the price down around 10% times the seller’s tier level below the item’s perceived value (at Tier 1, the merchant pays 9 silver). The transaction is deposited directly into the character’s World Bank account, subject to the bank’s 1% transaction fee (1 copper), and the merchant logs the sale in their quasi-records for local tax assessors.
- Black-Market Smuggler Coves and Shadow Docks:
- In hidden sea caverns, illicit wharf alleys, and lawless coastal enclaves outside the reach of the King’s naval garrison, the needle is traded among wreckers, contraband runners, and corsairs.
- When buying from the black market, items are always sold at full cost or higher, typically ranging between 12 silver and 20 silver, with no discounts given for guild standing or faction badges.
- When selling to black-market fences, they may offer the standard merchant payout of 9 silver, but if the fence is in desperate need of reliable divination tools to bypass naval patrols, they may pay twice the standard merchant rate (up to 18 silver).
- Black-market transactions are executed exclusively in physical precious metal coin (or standardized non-metal coinage) rather than the World Bank ledger, and the buyers keep their mouths shut without logging records for city judges or tax officials.
- Independent Travelers, Wandering Voyagers, and Direct Trade:
- Outside major city gates and ports, wandering adventurers, nomadic coastal tribals, and independent sailors frequently barter the needle directly to avoid municipal entry fees (1 silver at gates and seaports) and state border trade taxes (5% between states, 1% to 3% through cities).
- Prices in direct trades vary wildly based on location and scarcity: in remote landlocked towns or deep cave settlements where ocean artifacts are exceedingly rare, sellers might demand up to 50 silver or trade for high-utility survival equipment, whereas near rich coral atolls with an abundance of sea shamans, the item might be acquired for as little as 5 to 7 silver or a handful of common crafting reagents.
Tactical and Environmental Applications for Defense and Offense
- Open Ocean and Surface Waters:
- Offensive Application: During naval skirmishes or high-seas pursuits, the avatar holds the bone needle steady over a bowl of seawater to invoke the spirits of ancient sea-hunters. By chanting softly, the avatar tracks the subtle disturbances in the primary east-to-west currents caused by fleeing enemy vessels, guiding their crew along the fastest surface swells to intercept and close distance rapidly without losing the wind.
- Defensive Application: When targeted by pirate bombardment or naval broadsides, the avatar uses the Spiritual Beacon reaction or chants an Ancestral Wake Chant to locate hidden breaks in nearby barrier reefs. The avatar steers the vessel directly into treacherous, wave-washed shallows where enemy warships of deeper draft run aground or smash against coral outcrops, providing an immediate escape route through spiritual guidance.
- Coastal Reefs, Tidal Inlets, and Mangrove Swamps:
- Offensive Application: While navigating murky estuaries or contested island shores, the avatar communicates with resident water spirits to sense submerged hazards and shifting sandbars. The avatar can intentionally maneuver across viable channels while using illusions or ranged harassment to lure pursuing foes into deceptive drop-offs, sudden rip currents, or sharp coral shoals that puncture hulls and immobilize foot soldiers.
- Defensive Application: In low-visibility conditions such as sea-fogs, salt sprays, or swamp mists, the needle’s blue luminescence cuts through sensory distortion. When hostile raiders attempt an ambush from the shoreline, the avatar perceives the flow of water around incoming skirmishers, alerting the party to flanking attempts and granting early positioning advantages before physical strikes connect.
- Underground Caverns, Subterranean Lakes, and Mires:
- Offensive Application: Within dark, subterranean waterways beneath island continents, the avatar dangles the needle to detect hidden underground rivers and flowing drainages. By tracking the water’s pull, the party can pinpoint the exact locations of submerged cavern exits, locating hidden lairs of troglodytic monsters or unsealing natural sluices to flood enemy encampments situated in lower caverns.
- Defensive Application: When trapped in pitch-black cave systems where compasses fail and landmarks are nonexistent, the avatar whispers the true name of the local underground current to the needle. The spirits reveal the safest route away from toxic mire pools, stagnant sinkholes, and collapsing cave ceilings, ensuring the party maintains their footing and retreats without falling victim to disorienting underground labyrinths.
- Atmospheric Skies, Zeppelins, and Floating Cloud Cities:
- Offensive Application: Aboard airships, hot air balloons, or flying mounts, the avatar holds the needle aloft into passing cloud banks to read thermal air currents and moisture drift. By interpreting how the wind spirits interact with high-altitude moisture, the avatar directs airborne assaults from the blinding glare of Helios or slips through cloud cover to ambush enemy aerial patrols from above.
- Defensive Application: When caught in severe aerial turbulence or magical storms near floating mage towers, the avatar activates the needle to commune with the spirits of the upper winds. This allows the helmsman to align the vessel with stabilizing air currents, preventing severe capsizing, avoiding dangerous downbursts, and guiding the craft into the safety of the calm perimeter surrounding a cloud city’s base.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective:
- Sight: When the bone needle activates, the user watches the carved spiraling channels ignite with a cool, phosphorescent azure light. The boundary between the bone and the surrounding air blurs, casting sharp, dancing water-caustic reflections across the user’s hands. The needle appears to float weightlessly above the water’s surface, resisting natural motion and pointing unerringly along spiritual drift lines.
- Sound: The user hears a low, harmonic hum resembling the deep-water resonance of singing whales, interwoven with the soft, rhythmic hush of distant ocean breakers crashing against a reef.
- Smell: A sudden, crisp aroma fills the user’s nostrils, carrying the sharp scent of ozone, briny sea spray, sun-bleached kelp, and the resinous, earthy sweetness of coastal ironwood sap.
- Taste: A subtle tang of ionized salt and mineral-rich sea mist rests on the back of the user’s tongue, reminiscent of swallowing oceanic spray during a heavy swell.
- Touch: The ivory shifts instantly from body-warm bone to a cool, vibrating stone that sends tingling, magnetic pulses through the user’s fingers, creating a gentle buoyant sensation in the hands as if resting on the surface tension of water.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Mind’s Eye Alignment: The user’s Mind’s Eye immediately fills with spectral vectors and glowing lines of force superimposed over the physical world, revealing the invisible east-to-west planetary current and regional tidal surges.
- Spiritual Presence: An ambient, ancestral awareness presses gently against the user’s consciousness, providing an intuitive, compass-like pull toward safe harbor without spoken words.
- Echoes of Past Voyagers: Faint, rhythmic memory impressions of ancient navigators chanting cadence on sea canoes ripple through the user’s mind, imparting an instinctive certainty of orientation.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Sight: An onlooker sees the needle suddenly ignite with a soft, steady cyan glow, casting ethereal rippling shadows across the user’s face and gear. The needle lifts slightly on its braided grass cord, defying gravity to hover and swivel in midair or over a bowl of water without wobbling.
- Sound: Observers detect a faint, vibrating drone that sounds like wind whistling across the mouth of an empty sea conch, accompanied by the quiet rustle of sea-grass.
- Smell: Those nearby notice a brisk breeze of salty ocean air and tidal brine washing over the immediate area, even if situated inside an enclosed room or deep below deck.
- Taste: Observers close to the user may register a faint metallic, mineral dryness in the air on their lips.
- Touch: The surrounding air within a few feet of the activation drops slightly in temperature, accompanied by a subtle static charge that raises hairs on the skin.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Aura of Direction: Nearby beings with magical sensitivity perceive a focused beacon of ultraviolet and blue light cutting straight through the local weave toward the horizon.
- Sense of Being Watched: Observers feel a calm, watchful presence of ancient spirits lingering near the perimeter of the light, evaluating the intent of the crew.
- Positives:
- Grants immediate, foolproof orientation and reveals safe routes through treacherous reefs, dense fog, or stormy waters.
- Bypasses the need for visible landmarks or clear skies by tapping directly into ancestral ocean spirits and planetary currents.
- Provides a calming mental focus to the wielder, reducing the panic and disorientation caused by sudden natural or magical displacement.
- Negatives:
- The bright azure glow and distinct aquatic hum make silent or stealthy activation impossible in darkness.
- The sudden influx of spiritual vectors and historical navigational memories can cause brief sensory overload or a dull headache if maintained for extended periods.
- Generates a noticeable magical signature in the ultraviolet spectrum, making the user easily pinpointed by creatures or foes possessing True Sight.
Crafting Recipe: Navigational Needle of the Wayfinder’s Lineage
- Materials Needed:
- One six-inch bone fragment harvested from the rib or jaw of a mature ocean leviathan or marine beast.
- Three ounces of coastal ironwood sap, drawn directly from living flora using a fluid collector.
- Two ounces of fresh pelagic creature blood, harvested from a slain marine beast.
- One length of braided tidal sea-grass or kelp cordage (approximately twelve inches).
- One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted), utilized as the sacrificial arcane catalyst to channel and bind the enchantment.
- One half-pint of purified seawater collected from an active east-to-west ocean current during the week of Illumination.
- Tools Required:
- A specialized bone-carving chisel and fine steel awl.
- One fluid collector (syringe-style extraction tool).
- A shallow ceramic or volcanic clay mixing basin.
- An arcane etching stylus capable of directing focused thought.
- A steady heat source or small alchemical burner.
- Skill Requirements:
- Bonecrafting / Scrimshaw (Skill Level 2 or higher).
- Alchemical Crafting (Skill Level 2 or higher).
- Spell Focus & Inscription (Skill Level 1 or higher).
- Crafting Steps:
- Step 1: Preparation and Shaping: Carve and polish the leviathan bone fragment into a six-inch needle using the chisel and fine awl, tapering the tip to a point and piercing an eyelet through the top end.
- Step 2: Alchemical Reagent Distillation: In the volcanic clay basin, combine the extracted ironwood sap, harvested marine beast blood, and purified seawater. Heat the mixture gently over the alchemical burner while stirring continuously until it reduces into a viscous, luminescent azure ink.
- Step 3: Sacred Inscription: Using the etching stylus, engrave unbroken spiraling channels along the length of the needle that represent tidal swells and ancestral current pathways, ensuring the carvings meet cleanly at the tip.
- Step 4: Catalytic Transference and Infusion: Place the Tier 1 Magic Crystal into the clay basin alongside the prepared ink. Channel focused thought through the stylus to break down the crystal; the original crystal is consumed as a sacrificial component, transferring its stored arcane energy directly into the fluid mixture.
- Step 5: Channel Inlaying: Carefully fill the etched grooves of the bone needle with the energized azure ink, allowing the solution to bond into the porous bone structure until it hardens flush with the surface.
- Step 6: Cord Binding and Spiritual Attunement Ritual: Thread the braided sea-grass cord through the needle’s eyelet. Submerge the needle in a bowl of ocean water under the open sky and perform a ritual chant for at least ten minutes, calling upon the local sea spirits to awaken the conduit. Upon completion, the inlaid channels will emit a soft blue light, signifying that the item is permanently bound and ready for simple attunement.
Bone of Pointing and Lost Canoe of Five Swells
Hear now of the time when the moon was yet wet with birth-juice, before the nine thousand turnings of years were counted by the speaking peoples. In those days which have gone backwards into darkness, the great mother Gaialilith walked upon the waters and made the fishes and the great lizards of the salt to swim with hunger. The sky had no roads upon it. The great shining beast Helios went across the clouds sometimes right, sometimes left, because the world turned without a master, and the big breathing sphere of smoke VaporSphere did cast black shadows upon the salt water until all men were blind and full of weepings.
Upon the island which the grandfathers called Lapita, there lived a small man whose skin was brown like roasted nuts, named Karoo-of-the-Many-Paddles. Karoo was not a great wizard of the tall stone towers, nor was he a king who took taxes of silver and corn from the widows. Karoo was merely a finder of paths upon the wet belly of the world. In those ancient seasons, the people of the island had eaten all the land-crabs and all the sweet roots of the jungle, and their bellies were flat like empty water skins. The king of that time, who was fierce and had many wives from the female line of the ancient house, stood upon the high black rocks of the fire-mountain and shouted to the people: “Whosoever does not go into the salt waste to bring back the fat tuna and the eggs of the swimming birds shall be thrown into the deep holes of the earth where the hot stone bubbles!”
Karoo had only a small canoe made of a single hollow log, and three cousins who were very stupid and had arms like thick logs but heads like soft mud. The cousins were named Olo, who could only grunt; Belo, who was always frightened of the sea-pigs; and Tane, who had lost three toes to a biting worm in the reef. They put their paddles into the salt water when Helios was high at the eleventh hour, which is the middle of the daylight. But lo, as they went outward past the white foaming teeth of the barrier reef, the great dark shape of VaporSphere moved in the sky like a giant foot, and all the light was swallowed up. The day became colder than the ice that falls from the high void, and the sea turned into a great black pot that boiled without fire.
For three weeks of Blooming and two weeks of Dimming, the canoe was tossed upon the great waves that run forever from the sunrise to the sunset. The cousins wept until their salt was gone from their eyes. They had no sweet water to drink, and they began to chew upon the dry wood of their seats. Olo pointed his paddle to the left and said, “The land is where the wind smells of rotting trees!” But Belo struck him with a stone and said, “No, the land is where the wind smells of cold fish!” Then they fought in the bottom of the boat, and the canoe took in much water, and the spirits of the drowned people from the ancient sea of purgatory began to swim underneath them, looking up with white, dead eyes, waiting for their souls to tumble into the wet dark.
Karoo lay in the front of the canoe, and his heart was very heavy. He closed his meat-eyes and opened the Eye of the Spirit within his forehead, which the wise men now call the Mind’s Eye. He looked into the deep water where the light does not go. There, resting upon the floor of the sand among the sharp coral trees, lay the great dead mother of all leviathans, a beast whose ribs were like the timbers of twenty kingly houses. The beast had died in the days when Gaialilith made the great beasts fight for their breath, and its ghost still swam in circles above its white bones, crying out because it had forgotten which way the great warm current flowed toward the cold ends of the world.
Karoo spoke down into the water without moving his lips, using the secret tongue that the soul uses before it is put into a baby by the gods: “O mother of the deep salt, why do you swim in little circles like a beetle in a calabash? The sea is wide, and the great current goes always toward the setting of the star.”
The ghost of the leviathan answered with a noise like stones rolling down a cliff: “I cannot see the path, little meat-man. The gods have put a thick cloud over the water, and my eyes are full of sand. If I had a sharp thing to pierce the skin of the ocean, I would follow the blood-path back to the warm place where the sweet weed grows.”
Then Karoo, who was very brave although his belly was crying for bread, took his stone knife and tied a long vine of jungle-creeper to his waist. He jumped into the black water, down, down, into the realm where the water-men build their houses of green glass. The pressure of the deep sea squeezed his ears until they sang like locusts in the month of Buzzing. He reached the white mountain of the beast’s carcass and with great labor, using his stone blade and his strong teeth, he broke off the smallest, sharpest tip of the leviathan’s floating rib. It was a white bone, straight as a spear of light, six inches in length.
When he swam up to the canoe, he was nearly dead, and water came out of his nose instead of breath. His cousins pulled him into the boat, thinking he had brought a fish to eat. When they saw only a white bone, Belo raised his club to smash Karoo’s head, shouting, “You bring us dry bone while our bellies die!” But Karoo held the bone up to the dark sky where the eclipse of VaporSphere made everything look like ash.
Karoo took the fluid collector which his grandfather had made from the beak of a sea-heron, and he pierced the bark of the sacred ironwood log that was the mast of his canoe. The sticky red gum came forth like blood. He smeared the thick juice into the bone, and with a tooth of a shark he scratched the seven wavy lines that mean the seven weeks of the world. Then, taking a single drop of his own living blood from his tongue, he touched the eye of the needle.
Suddenly, a great wind that had no breath came out of the bone. The needle did not fall when he let it go; it rose up into the air, shining with a pale, cold fire like the belly of a dead jellyfish in the night. It turned away from the north, it turned away from the south, and it pointed its sharp nose straight into the teeth of the great east-to-west current. From the water around the canoe, three hundred spirits of ancient voyagers who had died before the kings were born rose up to the surface. They did not have faces, but they had hands of blue mist, and they took hold of the canoe’s sides and pushed it across the great rollers faster than a flying fish escapes from the jaws of the bonito.
For one day and one night the bone needle pulled the boat through the screaming darkness. The cousins fell upon their faces and ate their own hair in terror, believing that the demons of the void were carrying them to the cooking pots of the underworld. But Karoo stood in the front, holding the braided sea-grass line, watching the blue light cut through the black ocean like a knife through soft fat.
When the star Helios rose again in the morning, breaking out from behind the great planet VaporSphere, the blue light of the needle died away, and it dropped gently into Karoo’s palm, cool as a river pebble. The canoe grated upon the soft yellow sand of a great new country which the ancients named Aterian, where the trees were bent down with heavy yellow fruit and the streams ran with water that tasted of sweet rain. There the four men built houses and took wives, and Karoo became a master of wayfinding, teaching his sons how to speak to the bones of the deep water so that no man of his blood should ever be swallowed by the pathless salt.
Moral of the Story: The sailor who trusts only his own eyes will become food for the bottom of the sea when the sky turns dark; but he who listens to the quiet voice of the ancient spirits and follows the sacred measure of the world will find safe harbor, even when the stars themselves have lost their way.

- Cost: 4,000 Nuyen
- Availability: 3 (Legality: Legal / Minor Magic Curio)
Game Mechanics & Syntax:
- Astral Resonance (Passive): When bonded to an Awakened character (or held by an unawakened wielder with open astral visibility), the needle grants a +1 dice pool bonus to Outdoors or Athletics tests made to navigate surface waters, coastal waterways, and murky marshlands.
- Commune with the Water Spirits (Major Action): The wielder spends a Major Action to submerge the tip in open water and make an Astral + Intuition Test.
- 1+ Hits: The needle hovers over the liquid and rotates to point directly toward the safest natural channel, stable dock, or submerged passage within (Force x 10) kilometers for 1 hour.
- Glitch: The mental link alerts nearby background count anomalies or local aquatic spirits, giving a temporary -1 dice pool penalty to astral perception tests for 10 minutes.
- Spectral Fog Beacon (Minor Action): The user channels ambient mana through the focus to project an ethereal, cold azure radiance. For 10 combat turns, the wielder and allies within 5 meters reduce environmental visibility modifiers from mist, smoke, or light fog by one tier (e.g., Heavy Fog to Medium Fog).
Starfinder (Second Edition)
Phreatic Vector Pointer
- Item Level: Level 1 Hybrid Item
- Price: 120 Credits
- Hands: 1; Bulk: L
- Traits: Divination, Hybrid, Magical, Tech
Game Mechanics & Syntax:
- Oceanic Biosensing (Passive): While held or worn openly on a harness, the user gains a +1 item bonus to Survival checks to Sense Direction, Navigate, or avoid planetary aquatic hazards on aquatic and amphibious worlds.
- Commune with the Planetary Swell [two-actions] (Concentrate, Manipulate):
- Frequency: Once per day
- Effect: The user suspends the pointer over open water or conductive liquid. The micro-gravitational field and divinatory runes align with planetary magnetic and tidal flows, pointing unerringly toward the nearest natural harbor, navigable waterway, or landing pad within 10 miles. This grants a +2 circumstance bonus to Piloting checks made to maneuver watercraft or low-altitude hovercraft through coastal storms or shallow reefs for 1 hour.
- Phosphor Beacon [reaction] (Light):
- Trigger: The user or an ally within 15 feet is concealed by environmental fog, smoke, or particulate clouds.
- Frequency: Once per day
- Effect: The pointer emits a pulse of ionizing ultraviolet-blue light, illuminating a 20-foot emanation for 1 minute. Friendly creatures within the light gain a +1 circumstance bonus to Perception checks to pinpoint concealed targets within the radius.

Deep-Ocean Vector Scrimshaw
- Tech Level (TL): TL 2 (Primitive Archaic / Psionic Resonant Curio)
- Weight: — (Negligible)
- Cost: Cr 250 (Black Market / Relic Trader Value)
Game Mechanics & Syntax:

- Psionic Resonance (Active Navigation): A sophont with Psionic capability (or trained in ancient cultural divination traditions) can hold the needle suspended by its line over water and perform an Average (8+) Survival or PSI Check (1D minutes, INT or PSI).
- Success: The scrimshaw pivots along local magnetic and tidal vectors, revealing the most stable current heading toward land or open navigation lanes within 20 kilometers, granting DM+2 to any subsequent vessel pilot or helm checks for the next 4 hours.
- Failure (Effect -2 or worse): The user misinterprets anomalous local magnetic fields, wasting 1D hours traveling toward a dangerous reef or tidal shelf.
- Luminescent Pulse: In low-light or smoke-filled compartments, shaking the needle excites dormant bio-luminescent minerals in the inlaid grooves, providing dim illumination across a 3-meter radius for 30 minutes without generating heat.
