Lore:
- Originating in the high-walled garrison towns of the Central Sovereign Basin, the superstition of the Vigilant Watchman claims that the eye of an incorruptible law-keeper casts a physical shadow across guilt, causing guilty hands to sweat and the footprints of fleeing rogues to glow in the night dirt.
- Across multiple island nations, city gatekeepers, night bailiffs, and ward turnkeys pass down the folk belief that a true constable cannot be taken unawares on their own watch, as the stones of the street themselves whisper warnings of disorderly intent.
- Because the currents of magic on Saṃsāra answer cognitive conviction, an avatar who dons this talisman and maintains true belief in the absolute duty of the watch channels ambient arcane energy into detecting evasion, securing unruly captives, and projecting a steady mantle of lawful authority.
Description:
- This practical wrist bracer is fashioned from dense, mineral-tanned boiled hide stained a deep charcoal gray, reinforced with flat iron studs along the outer forearm seam.
- Set flush into the dorsal plate of the bracer is an unpolished, coin-sized tier 1 magic crystal that gleams with a cool, slate-blue hue when ambient light catches its cloudy facets.
- Fastened beneath the crystal setting is a narrow, stamped tin identification marker bearing the scratched inscription: “Originally made by: Duram of the East Gate Watch.”
- The leather smells cleanly of paraffin wax, lamp tallow, and dry masonry dust, feeling cool and unyielding against the forearm while remaining completely resistant to sweat and rain rot.

Passives:
- Sentry’s Unblinking Eye: While this bracer is openly worn and attuned, the wearer’s lawful vigil is magnified by myth magic, granting a +1 temporary bonus to skill checks involving spotting hidden contraband, noticing attempts to slip away or pick pockets, and tracking fresh boot prints on urban cobblestones.
- Unbending Stance: The wearer’s absolute psychological commitment to maintaining the king’s peace causes the slate-blue crystal to hum, granting advantage on saving throws to resist being shoved, knocked prone, or forcefully displaced while standing firm on solid ground.
Actives:
- Halt the Fleeing Heel: By expending one action to point the bracer at a fleeing or hostile creature within 30 feet while barking a somatic order to halt in the name of the watch, the slate-blue crystal flares, imposing a -10-foot penalty to the target’s base movement speed until the end of its next turn as the ground beneath its feet seems to cling like thick mire.
- Ward-Bailiff’s Manacle: By expending one action to strike the iron-studded bracer against ordinary rope, chains, or binding cords wrapped around a restrained target, the wearer infuses the bindings with stabilizing myth magic, increasing the DC or check required to slip, pick, or burst the restraints by +2 for the next hour.

Commerce and Acquisition of Myth 83 of the Vigilant Watchman
- Municipal Guard Armories, Garrison Quartermasters, and Watch Barracks:
- Located within inner-wall fortress enclosures, municipal gatehouses, and high-walled provincial garrisons, these supply depots are managed by veteran bailiffs and appointed armory wardens.
- In these official facilities, gear is produced and cataloged specifically for town watches, gate turnkeys, and regional patrol squads enforcing local edicts.
- An unaffiliated wanderer or freelance deputy seeking to purchase the bracer from an official armory faces a rigid sellers’ market governed by buyer-beware conventions; the base retail price is set at the suggested value of 105 silver coins (or 10 gold and 5 silver coins).
- If the purchaser is an active, recognized member of an authorized peacekeeping faction—such as the Municipal Watch, Bailiff’s Union, or Highway Provosts—and presents their official badge, the statutory faction discount of 10% multiplied by avatar tier applies. For a tier 1 avatar, this reduces the cost by 10% (10.5 silver coins), bringing the requisition price down to roughly 94 silver and 5 copper coins (standardly rounded to 95 silver in garrison accounts).
- Transactions at these depots are processed directly through the World Bank, logging the acquisition in imperial military archives, debiting the buyer’s balance via the Mind’s Eye, and assessing the standard 1% bank transfer fee.
- When selling a captured or decommissioned bracer back to a garrison quartermaster, the base payout follows the standard liquidation rule: baseline value minus 10% multiplied by the seller’s tier level. A tier 1 avatar receives approximately 94 to 95 silver coins for a clean bracer retaining its full 30 hit points and unbroken crystal bezel. The seller’s identity and ledger profile are formally registered with the garrison provost.
- City Leathercrafters, Armor Outposts, and Security Chandleries:
- Found along the paved high streets of central capitals and commercial market districts, these private, family-run craft houses produce practical protective wear, bridles, and riot cuffs for merchant guards and caravan escorts.
- The artisans running these workshops frequently take surplus municipal contracts or buy guard gear from retired watchmen to refurbish and resell to private security agents.
- Independent travelers can acquire the bracer at the full benchmark price of 105 silver coins.
- Affiliated guild members belonging to recognized mercenary or leatherworking leagues receive their appropriate 10% tier-based price concession (paying around 95 silver coins).
- When liquidating the bracer to a civilian armorer, the buyer uses their Mind’s Eye to evaluate the boiled-hide layers and iron studs; if the item has sustained structural wear, repair fees are deducted from the standard 94-to-95-silver baseline before the balance is cleared through the municipal ledger.
- Under-Wharf Fences, Thieves’ Dens, and Black-Market Smuggling Rings:
- Operating out of dark tavern basements, drainage canals, and hidden wharf cellars beneath coastal ports, illicit syndicates routinely deal in gear stripped from slain city sentries or corrupt patrolmen.
- Criminal fences and back-alley fixers deal exclusively in hard, unlinked currency—demanding physical, solid metal coins (primarily stamped gold pieces) and rejecting all World Bank electronic transfers or Mind’s Eye chits to preserve anonymity.
- Black-market purveyors impose severe markups because carrying an official watchman’s bracer carries high judicial risk and allows underworld agents to impersonate guards; buyers must pay anywhere from 105 to 210 silver coins (tendered as 10 to 21 physical gold pieces), with zero faction discounts offered.
- Selling the bracer to an illicit fence guarantees total anonymity, as no transaction logs are forwarded to city magistrates. An underworld buyer typically offers the standard 94-to-95-silver baseline in cold physical gold, but may pay up to 180 silver coins (18 physical gold pieces) if local smuggling crews urgently require sentry equipment to stage a jailbreak or slip past dockside checkpoints.
- Rural Village Blacksmithies, Caravan Outposts, and Frontier Trading Posts:
- In remote border hamlets, frontier river ferries, and isolated waystations beyond the reach of paved roads, trade is governed entirely by immediate utility and local scarcity.
- A well-traveled frontier merchant or retired carter who understands the folk superstition of the Vigilant Watchman may value the item highly, demanding up to 130 to 140 silver coins from passing travelers in need of defense against highwaymen, payable in trade iron, raw pelts, or beast bile.
- Conversely, an uneducated rural smith or rustic barterer who lacks the Mind’s Eye sensitivity to discern the myth-magic crystal may view the item merely as a stiff piece of scrap leather with an iron clasp and a cloudy slate-colored river stone. In such humble markets, a shrewd buyer can purchase the piece for as little as 25 to 35 silver coins, or receive a meager offer of only 15 to 20 silver coins when attempting to sell it to an indifferent village trader who regards it as crude farm armor.
Roleplay Applications of Myth 83 of the Vigilant Watchman Across Diverse Environments
- Cobblestone Alleys, Crowded Plazas, and High-Walled Municipal Wards:
- Defensive Roleplay: While patrolling tight urban corridors or crowded market squares, the avatar embodies the vigilant, unshakeable authority of the city guard. The bracer’s 1 Armor Check deflects clumsy shiv thrusts from street cutpurses or thrown stones from unruly mobs. When rioters or brawlers attempt to charge, push, or bowl over the line, the avatar leans on the Unbending Stance passive, planting their boots firmly against the paving stones to absorb brute momentum without being knocked prone or shoved aside. The Sentry’s Unblinking Eye passive constantly alerts the avatar to sleight-of-hand thefts, concealed daggers slipping from cloaks, and fresh boot grease left across damp cobblestones.
- Offensive Roleplay: In pursuit of a fleeing thief darting through a bustling bazaar, the avatar levels the bracer and shouts the lawful command of the watch to activate Halt the Fleeing Heel. As the target’s boots suddenly drag against the pavement as if glued to thick tar, the avatar closes the distance, tackles the suspect, and secures their wrists. Striking the studded bracer against standard iron cuffs or hemp rope activates Ward-Bailiff’s Manacle, infusing the bonds with mythic resilience that prevents the captive from wriggling free or slipping their lock before the patrol wagon arrives.
- Dense Forest Trails, Woodland Smuggler Paths, and Overgrown Ravines:
- Defensive Roleplay: Operating as an outrider or highway provost along wooded frontiers, the avatar relies on the bracer’s hardened boiled hide to turn aside low-hanging thorns, wild animal claws, and ambushing arrows loosed from thick brush. If an ambusher leaps from a tree limb to bring the avatar to the earth, the grounded stability of the bracer prevents them from being toppled into the dirt. The heightened sensory edge of Sentry’s Unblinking Eye cuts through forest camouflage, revealing disturbed loam, broken twigs, and hidden caches of untaxed contraband tucked beneath hollow logs.
- Offensive Roleplay: When woodland outlaws break cover and scatter into the thicket, the avatar uses Halt the Fleeing Heel to lock the leader’s stride in place, causing briars and roots to snag their heels and eliminating their head start. Once subdued, the bandit is bound to a sturdy pine with standard hemp, which the avatar strikes with the bracer to apply Ward-Bailiff’s Manacle. The reinforced mythic knotting holds the captive secure against wild beasts and escape attempts while the avatar tracks down the rest of the gang.
- Subterranean Dungeons, Sewer Aqueducts, and Crypt Passageways:
- Defensive Roleplay: Delving into slick, sewage-slicked stone conduits or dank prison undercrofts, the avatar faces slippery footing and sudden lunges from lurking horrors. The bracer’s moisture-cured hide sheds corrosive grime and foul water without deteriorating, while Unbending Stance guarantees the avatar keeps their footing on algae-covered tiles or slick drainage ledges when subterranean beasts attempt to drag them into the sludge. Sentry’s Unblinking Eye allows the avatar to track muddy, webbed footprints and spot loosened drainage grates used as hidden escape routes.
- Offensive Roleplay: Confronted by sewer-crawlers, escaped cell convicts, or cultist couriers attempting to vanish into dark crawlspaces, the avatar uses Halt the Fleeing Heel to pin the quarry before they reach deep tunnels. Closing in with iron-studded forearm strikes, the avatar subdues the runner and secures them with whatever chains are at hand. By invoking Ward-Bailiff’s Manacle, the chains resist both brute strength and acidic sewer seepage, ensuring the prisoner remains firmly anchored to the iron ringbolts until surface backup arrives.
- Coastal Docks, Smuggler Wharfs, and Storm-Tossed Decks:
- Defensive Roleplay: Boarding contested smuggling sloops or walking narrow wharf piers during driving gale storms, the avatar uses the bracer to overcome treacherous footing. When towering rogue waves or shifting deck cargo strike the avatar, Unbending Stance locks their boots to the timber planks, preventing them from being washed over the gunwales or slammed to the deck. The bracer’s mineral-tanned hide resists salt-spray degradation, while its 1 Armor Check absorbs glancing swings from cutlasses and gaff hooks.
- Offensive Roleplay: When maritime smugglers attempt to dive overboard into the harbor to evade arrest, the avatar points the slate-blue stone across the pier and barks the order to halt. The myth magic clamps down via Halt the Fleeing Heel, causing the runner’s boots to drag heavily across the wet decking and ending their sprint short of the water. Once pinned, the smuggler is bound with coarse hemp rigging line, which the avatar reinforces with Ward-Bailiff’s Manacle, ensuring salt water and wet rope shrinkage cannot be exploited to wriggle out of the knot.
- Arid Desert Caravans, Sandstone Canyons, and Border Outposts:
- Defensive Roleplay: Stationed at sun-scorched desert checkpoints or tracking raiders across shifting dunes, the avatar’s bracer repels abrasive wind-blown sand and scorching heat without cracking. When raiders stage a mounted charge or desert beasts lunge with crushing mass, Unbending Stance provides supernatural traction even in loose grit, allowing the avatar to hold their defensive perimeter at the gate. Sentry’s Unblinking Eye cuts through shimmering heat mirages, isolating displaced sand ridges, concealed smuggling cavities beneath pack saddles, and hidden desert tracks.
- Offensive Roleplay: When desert raiders abandon their mounts to slip into rocky crevices or sprint down crumbling scree slopes, the avatar deploys Halt the Fleeing Heel. The sand under the target’s sandals seems to turn into heavy wet clay, slowing their ascent and allowing the avatar to apprehend them. Applying Ward-Bailiff’s Manacle to raw leather thongs or iron hobbles ensures the captives cannot slip their bonds during the long, dry trek back to the garrison outpost.

Perception of Activation:
User’s Perspective
- Sight:
- The cloudy, slate-blue crystal seated on the dorsal plate flares with an unyielding, cold cerulean brilliance, casting sharp blue highlights across the iron studs and the back of the hand.
- In the user’s field of vision, the footsteps of recent runners, concealed weapon outlines under heavy cloaks, and disturbed dust patterns along lock mechanisms illuminate with a faint, luminous slate-gray silhouette.
- Sound:
- A low, heavy metallic thrum reverberates directly through the bones of the forearm, resembling the distant, resonant slam of a portcullis or the steady turn of a heavy brass deadbolt in a stone keep.
- When executing Halt the Fleeing Heel, the user hears an authoritative, percussive chime like an iron gavel striking granite, accompanied by a faint grinding friction from the target’s footing.
- Smell:
- A dry, clean draft of chimney soot, mineral oil, melted lantern paraffin, and chilled masonry dust fills the sinuses, purging surrounding odors of stale tavern ale, ditch water, and refuse.
- An astringent hint of cold iron and lime wash lingers in the nostrils while lawful intent is focused.
- Taste:
- A flat, cold-metal tang rests across the tongue, akin to the sensation of touching clean iron on a frosty morning or drinking hard spring water drawn from deep limestone.
- The mouth feels taut and dry, dulling salivary appetite and focusing attention entirely on immediate duty.
- Touch:
- The boiled-hide shell contracts with a sudden, rigid embrace around the wrist, locking the joint into a stable, shock-absorbent posture as dense as carved basalt.
- A cool, prickling electric current courses through the fingers, causing the forearm muscles to steady and eliminating hand tremors.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Mind’s Eye Synchronization: The Mind’s Eye interface flashes with an azure tint, reporting the bracer’s 30 hit points, 1 Armor Check, and an instant assessment of nearby targets’ movement metrics and restraint status.
- Intuitive Evasion Detection: The user senses an immediate mental pulse whenever a creature within thirty paces alters its stride to flee, drop contraband, or perform an act of sleight of hand.
- Sovereign Bastion Feedback: A stabilizing harmonic settles into the avatar’s center of gravity, projecting an internal sense of immovable weight that confirms their grounded connection to the earth.
Observer’s Perspective
- Sight:
- Witnesses see the unpolished slate-colored stone flash into a brilliant, steady azure flare, casting cold, sharp-edged blue beams through the surrounding air and silhouetting the wearer’s forearm.
- Those viewing the scene through magical sight or the Mind’s Eye observe thin, pale-blue spectral chains and banding motifs briefly coiling around the user’s boots, rooting their stance to the terrain.
- Sound:
- Bystanders within five paces hear a dull, dry snap, similar to heavy iron manacles snapping shut or an iron-shod staff striking flagstones.
- A faint, low-frequency hum vibrates in the teeth of those standing nearby while the active arrest magic is sustained.
- Smell:
- Onlookers detect a sudden, crisp smell of cold river stone, oiled leather, and quenched iron, cutting cleanly through ambient market stench or damp swamp air.
- Taste:
- Observers experience no direct taste, though individuals restrained by Ward-Bailiff’s Manacle report a sudden dry, metallic sensation in the throat.
- Touch:
- If a bystander attempts to shove, grab, or leverage the wearer while Unbending Stance is holding, the avatar feels as immovable as a solid stone pillar, transmitting a numbing shock back through the aggressor’s arms.
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Mind’s Eye Appraisal: An observer inspecting the avatar registers the title “Watchman” marked in bold blue runes above the profile, along with persistent status indicators for anti-displacement and restraint reinforcement.
- Mantle of Inevitable Justice: Unruly or criminal elements in the immediate vicinity feel a sudden, oppressive psychological chill, manifesting as an instinctual urge to halt or look toward escape routes.
Positives
- Delivers an inherent +1 Armor Check against kinetic strikes and weapon impacts to the forearm without demanding a main chest or shield slot.
- Sentry’s Unblinking Eye operates passively, granting consistent, heightened awareness for finding contraband, spotting pickpockets, and tracking urban fugitives without expending actions.
- Unbending Stance provides vital positional stability, giving advantage against knockdown and forced displacement maneuvers on solid footing.
- Halt the Fleeing Heel provides instant, reliable ranged movement denial against escaping adversaries.
- Ward-Bailiff’s Manacle ensures secured captives cannot easily escape, slip bonds, or burst standard ropes and chains during transit.
Negatives
- The intense slate-blue flare and rising light motes make total visual concealment virtually impossible while any active power is being channeled.
- Halt the Fleeing Heel’s speed penalty lasts only until the end of the target’s next turn, demanding immediate follow-up before the runner regains full momentum.
- The bracer’s defensive +1 Armor Check is purely physical, offering zero protection against psychic, thermal, radiant, or direct magical attacks.
- The unyielding, rigid tightening around the wrist during activation can cause joint fatigue if worn during hours of continuous combat exertion.
Crafting Recipe: Myth 83 of the Vigilant Watchman
Materials Needed
- One Tier 1 Magic Crystal, coin-sized and unpolished, harvested from a subterranean burrowing creature, armored predator, or territorial sentinel beast.
- One square foot of heavy steer hide, vegetable-tanned and pre-treated for boiling.
- Two fluid ounces of animal oil or tallow infused with mineral paraffin wax to temper and water-seal the hide.
- Twelve flat, circular iron studs with split-shank rivets for exterior plate reinforcement.
- One circular forged iron bezel mount fitted with retaining prongs to grip the crystal securely.
- One small tin tag blank with an iron mounting ring for maker inscription.
- Two yards of waxed heavy linen cord or sinew thread for border reinforcement.
- Two adjustable iron buckle sets with matching leather fastening straps for wrist closure.
Tools Required
- One Fluid Collector with an extraction siphon for biological tempering agents.
- A leather punch and round-head ball-peen hammer.
- A saddler’s pricking iron and two heavy stitching needles.
- A water cauldron and a low-heat brazier for hot-water hardening (cuir bouilli).
- An iron anvil block with a rivet-setting punch.
- An arcane focus implement to channel mental intention into the crystal core.
Skill Requirements
- Leatherworking and Armoring: Skill Level 5 or higher to execute uniform hot-water boiling, curve-molding, and precise riveting without scorching or cracking the dense hide.
- Magical Crafting: Skill Level 5 or higher to align cognitive focus pathways and anchor the Tier 1 crystal into the dorsal housing without disrupting its resonance.
- Alchemical Crafting: Skill Level 4 or higher to correctly compound the paraffin and tallow sealant to prevent moisture decay and maintain tensile rigidity.
Crafting Steps
- Hide Profiling and Shaping: Cut the vegetable-tanned steer hide into an anatomically tapered forearm pattern, measuring wide enough to shield the dorsal forearm while allowing clearance for the wrist and elbow joints. Skive the inner edges to avoid chafing the wearer’s skin.
- Boiling and Hardening (Cuir Bouilli): Immerse the cut hide pattern in a cauldron of water brought to a controlled sub-boiling heat (roughly 180°F to 190°F) for exactly ninety seconds. Remove the softened leather with tongs and immediately press it over a curved wooden forearm mandrel, holding the shape as the fibers tighten and turn deep charcoal gray.
- Wax and Mineral Tempering: While the shaped hide is warm and cooling, rub the paraffin-infused animal tallow thoroughly across the exterior and flesh faces using a coarse wool cloth. Allow the wax to soak deep into the pores to ensure long-term water-resistance and mineral-dense rigidity.
- Hardware and Stud Mounting: Once the bracer is fully hardened, punch paired pilot holes along the dorsal borders using the leather punch. Insert the twelve flat iron studs around the perimeter, peening their split shanks flat against the underside on the iron anvil block so they sit flush with the interior leather.
- Crystal Housing and Tag Placement: Rivet the circular forged iron bezel mount directly onto the center of the dorsal plate. Take the tin tag blank, punch the maker’s mark and provenance into its face with an iron stylus, and secure it immediately beneath the bezel using an iron rivet. Seat the unpolished slate-blue Tier 1 magic crystal into the bezel, hammering the iron retaining prongs over the crystal’s edges to hold it immovable.
- Straps and Stitching: Punch stitching lines along the outer borders using the pricking iron. Double-stitch the outer margins with waxed linen cord to prevent delamination. Rivet the two adjustable closure straps and their matching iron buckles to the lateral flaps, ensuring a firm, non-slip fit over the wrist.
- Arcane Conduiting and Attunement Priming: Rest the assembled bracer upon the anvil block. Rest one hand firmly over the slate-blue crystal while directing an arcane focus implement with the other. Speak the old municipal watchman’s oath in a low, unwavering somatic cadence, concentrating pure mental belief on lawful duty, absolute vigilance, and the inevitable capture of lawbreakers. Maintain this channel until the slate-blue crystal pulses with a steady, cool cerulean luminescence, locking the myth magic into the hide to set its baseline 1 Armor Check, 30 hit points, and active enforcement abilities.
Duram of Outer Sentry-Hole and Seven Greased Brothers
In the cycle when the wall-bricks of the high borough were still baked with chopped weed and ox-hair, before the river had cut its ditch through the red clay, there sat the gate-keeper named Duram. His knees were as hard as two round stones from kneeling upon the flagged sill to peer beneath the carts. He ate only coarse groats dried upon an iron plate, and he drank only the water from the ditch after the horses had passed, saying that a man whose belly is filled with wine has eyes like greasy tallow and cannot see the thief crawling beneath the tail-board.
Upon his left wrist he had bound a thick piece of hide taken from the forehead of an old bull that had broken three plows before the butcher could fell it with a copper mallet. The hide was black like a drowned root, boiled in tallow and studded with twelve plates of beaten river-iron. In the center of the leather sat a blue pebble, rough like a piece of river-slate, which the old slate-scratchers record was harvested from the crop of a great night-buzzard that roosted forty winters upon the highest parapet without closing either eye against the gale.
In that dry turn of the year, there came down from the scrub-hills the seven sons of the shearer Malok. These brothers were called the Greased Brothers, for they had scraped all the lard from thirty swine and rubbed their bodies with it until their flesh was slippery like peeled onions. When a night-patrol laid a spear upon them, the wood slid across their ribs like an eel through wet sedge; when an apprentice-bailiff gripped an ankle, the foot shot out of his fist like a melon-seed pinched between two fingers. They carried copper scrapers and knives shaped like willows, and for twelve nights they had crept through the sheep-pens, taking the silver ear-tags, the small copper kettles, and the dyed flax-skeins of the weavers, leaving behind only the dung of their sandals.
The headman of the weavers cried before the timber gate, pulling his gray beard until his chin bled: Lo, the grease-men walk through our locks like smoke through an old wicker fence. My three tubs of blue dye are carried away, and the town-guards sit upon their bench with lard upon their noses, sleeping like fat swine in a ditch!
Duram did not shout, nor did he strike his chest with an axe-haft. He sat upon a squared block of gray granite with his back pressed against the iron hinge of the outer wicket. He drew the boiled strap tighter about his forearm until the studs bit into the sinew. He spoke to the weaver in the low speech of the trench-keepers: A man whose skin is covered in pig-fat has a heart that shakes like curdled milk. Go back to your loom, old thread-beater, for the stones of the gate do not sleep, and the ground remembers the weight of a copper kettle.
At the midnight hour, when the torches on the ramparts were guttered out by the valley mist and the air smelled of cold soot, there came the sound of bare soles slapping upon the flagstones. The seven brothers were running together in a knot, carrying two sacks of stolen bronze spikes and five stolen rams slung upon their shoulders by the feet. Their skin shone in the fog like wet pond-mud, and they ran with long strides toward the broken ditch where the wall had crumbled from the spring rain.
Duram stood up from his stone block. He did not blow an alarm-horn, for he said that brass was made for noisy herd-boys. He stepped into the middle of the roadway, planted his two boots into the gravel, and raised his left arm, pointing the slate-blue stone straight into the throat of the foremost brother, who was named Vor-the-Harrower.
Duram uttered the command of the borough-watch, words which the ancient stone-cutter marked with great awkwardness upon the cylinder-seal: The boundary is closed; the earth takes the heel.
Behold, the translation from the second clay tablet records that the road-dirt made a noise like a hungry hog sucking in the swill-trough. The gravel beneath the sandals of the seven brothers ceased to roll. The mud of the roadway reached up like cold dough; it took the toes of the runners and gripped the balls of their feet as if every grain of stone had grown an iron tooth. Vor-the-Harrower fell forward with his teeth striking the stones, for his feet were glued to the path, while his sack of stolen spikes broke across his spine and spilled fifty bronze pins into the dirt. The six brothers behind him tripped upon his ribs, tumbling together into a greasy heap of arms, legs, and squealing rams, yet not one could lift a single heel from the flags, though they tore their toe-nails in the effort.
The brothers cursed Duram with the seven curses of the hill-dwellers, spitting fat and gravel from their lips. Vor cried out: O keeper of the ditch, you may sit upon our bellies, but our skin is smoother than an eel’s belly! Your ropes cannot hold us, and when the gray dawn comes, we shall slide between your iron bars like melted oil!
Duram walked slowly to the heap of men. He pulled from his waist-strap a common cord of twisted hemp that had been used to tie bundles of faggots for the watch-fire. He took the two wrists of Vor-the-Harrower and crossed them behind his back, winding the rough rope twice around the joints. Then, raising his arm, Duram struck the iron studs of his wrist-guard against the knot, crying the old ward-bailiff’s speech: Iron knows the rogue; the knot remembers the tree.
The slate-blue pebble flared with the light of a cold star fallen into river-ice. A sound came from the hemp rope like an iron bar being quenched in a horse-trough. The grease upon Vor’s wrists did not cause the cord to slip; rather, the hemp fibers tightened and turned gray like old horn, biting through the lard and sinking into the skin until the flesh formed two blue rings about the bone. Vor groaned like an ox under a broken cart-tongue, for the more he twisted his greased joints, the more the cord gripped his marrow, as if the knot had been cast in solid bronze.
In this manner Duram bound the seven brothers with a single strand of faggot-twine, knotting them together like onions on a string. He did not pull them with a mule, nor did he call for the town archers. He sat down upon his stone block, rested his chin upon his staff, and held the end of the hemp cord in his left fist until the sun broke the mist over the reed-beds.
When the provost of the town arrived with forty bailiffs bearing copper lanterns and iron tongs to haul the thieves away, they found the seven brothers weeping in the dust. The pig-lard had dried upon their hide into white scales, their knees were locked fast to the earth by the weight of Duram’s blue stone, and their arms were so firmly bound that three smiths were required with cold chisels to cut the faggot-twine from their wrists, for the hemp would not untie for any hand that had not worn the hide bracer.
The headman of the weavers brought a dish of roasted kid and a flagon of honey-wine to the gate-house, saying: Eat, Duram, for your left arm has saved forty coats of fleece and the bronze of our looms.
Duram turned his face toward the wall and would not touch the meat. He drank only his water from the ditch and ate his groats from the flat plate, saying: A watchman who fills his mouth with gifts will soon listen to the song of the silver kettle and forget the crack in the lintel. Take away the wine, for the sun is high, and the sheep of the hills are walking down the lane.
It is written upon the final fragment of the cylinder that Duram guarded the East Gate until his beard touched his knee-caps and his ears had grown flat from the iron rim of his helmet. When the city fell in the great war of the five banners, the invaders broke down the timber doors with four iron rams, but they could not pull Duram’s body from the roadway, for his boots had grown into the stone beneath the lintel, and the bracer upon his forearm had become an iron rock that turned aside fifty spears before the dust covered the gate forever.
The Moral of the Story: He who greases his limbs to flee from the law shall find that the earth turns to lime beneath his toes, for the eye of the sentinel is heavier than forty sacks of bronze, and a true knot holds faster than an army of shields.

Traveller

- Structural Integrity Field: The anomalous mineral buckle radiates a passive low-frequency molecular harmonic. The bracer itself possesses increased resilience, functioning with increased structural hit points and resilience against damage as noted below:
- Bracer Hit Points: 30

A correct Traveler adaptation would be: Once per operational day as an attack action, the user may target a visible enemy within 10 meters and trigger a focused, low-frequency kinetic pulse. The user must pass an Average (8+) Int check. On a success, the target’s base speed is halved for 1 combat round as the localized field increases molecular gravity and friction beneath their boots. This cannot target targets in vacuum or weightlessness.
- Binding Reinforcement: By spending one round to rap the iron studs against mundane ropes, chains, or bindings, the user increases the difficulty of any Skill check to pick, break, or slip them by DM-1 for 1 hour.
