Myth 19 of the Sovereign Palate

Lore:

  • Originating in the banqueting halls of ancient coastal city-states, the superstition of the Sovereign Palate claims that an individual of truly refined discernment cannot be harmed by foul fare, as base poisons and spoiled broths instinctively curdle and yield before genuine sophistication.
  • Across multiple island nations, eccentric culinary critics, royal tasters, and vintage collectors maintain the belief that supreme sensory snobbery commands physical reality, enabling an educated tongue to strip the lethal venom from a viper or coax hidden vintage notes from muddy water.
  • Because the flow of magic on Saṃsāra manifests through the focused power of conviction, an avatar who wears this piece and genuinely believes in their own supreme epicurean superiority compels ambient magical currents to analyze, purify, and elevate consumables before a single bite is swallowed.

Description:

  • This ornamental choker is fashioned from a narrow ribbon of cream-dyed raw silk, fastened with a silver-plated toggle engraved in the likeness of an empty banquet chalice.
  • Set directly into the center of the throat band is a pale, coin-sized tier 1 magic crystal that gleams with a faint, honeyed amber luminescence when exposed to ambient light.
  • A tiny brass appraisal plaque dangles beneath the crystal mount, inscribed with the title: “Originally made by: Vane of the Highcellars,” though the lineage remains impossible to authenticate.
  • When handled, the choker smells faintly of dried orange peel and aged oak casks, feeling warm and supple against the skin while remaining completely resistant to grease and wine stains.

  • Suggested Market Value: 110 silver coins, subject to local access, merchant haggling, and buyer-beware dynamics.
  • Weight: 0.5 pounds.

Passives:

  • Aristocratic Palate: While this choker is openly worn and attuned, the wearer’s sensory critique is enhanced by myth magic, granting a +1 temporary bonus to skill checks involving the identification, appraisal, and historical analysis of food, beverages, alchemy reagents, and biological fluids.
  • Rejection of the Base: The wearer’s absolute psychological disdain for poorly prepared substances causes the crystal to hum, granting advantage on saving throws against ingesting non-magical poisons, spoiled foodstuffs, and noxious foul waters.

Actives:

  • Vintage Discernment: By expending one action to swirl, sniff, and loudly critique a potion, elixir, or food item within arm’s reach using a Somatic vocal chant of disdain, the wearer reveals all mundane properties, biological origins, and alchemical qualities of the consumable without needing to taste it.
  • Condescending Purge: By expending one action to touch the amber crystal to a single portion of contaminated food or drink while declaring its unworthiness, the wearer neutralizes all non-magical toxins, foul taints, and parasitic microbes within that vessel, restoring it to a palatable, vintage-quality state.

Commerce and Acquisition of Myth 19 of the Sovereign Palate

  • High-End Haberdashers, Gourmet Boutiques, and Vintner Guildhalls:
    • In metropolitan central cities, grand capitals, and affluent merchant districts, this item is acquired through specialized culinary purveyors, high-end tailors, and certified guild shops catering to noble tables and royal tasters. These establishments occupy brick or cut-stone storefronts in guarded commercial quarters where local laws strictly regulate standard trade and inspect weights.
    • When purchasing from an independent, family-owned boutique, the baseline price adheres to the sellers’ market standard of 110 silver coins (11 gold pieces) for unaffiliated buyers.
    • If the buyer holds verified membership in an aligned organization—such as the Vintners, Cooks, or Alchemists Guild—and openly displays their faction badge, they qualify for a 10% discount per character tier. For a tier 1 avatar, this 10% reduction lowers the purchase cost by 11 silver coins to a final total of 99 silver coins.
    • Transactions in these formal districts are routinely logged in local trade registries and settled via the World Bank interface visible in the Mind’s Eye, requiring account holders to cover the standard 1% banking fee.
    • When an avatar sells the choker to an upscale shopkeeper, the standard merchant haggling mechanic applies, reducing the offer by 10% times the seller’s tier level. An NPC merchant in a stable urban district offers roughly 99 silver coins for a pristine piece, subsequently logging the seller’s identifying details in municipal acquisition records accessible to palace bailiffs or tax assessors.
  • Alchemical Apothecaries and Reagent Dispensaries:
    • Found along major inter-state roadways, coastal wharf districts, and near municipal training academies, these shops are managed by specialized artisans and potion crafters who maintain dedicated workstations for compounding magical consumables. In these aromatic storefronts, Myth 19 of the Sovereign Palate is classified as an essential diagnostic accessory for testing reagent purity and avoiding fatal toxic spills during harvesting.
    • The purchase cost remains anchored to the suggested retail value of 110 silver coins, though an apothecary merchant may accept equivalent trade value in refined fluids extracted via fluid collectors, rare beast glands, or stabilized magic crystals.
    • Alchemical guild members presenting the appropriate credentials and rank badges obtain the piece for 99 silver coins.
    • When buying the choker from an adventuring party, apothecary proprietors thoroughly inspect the item’s hit points and resilience using the Mind’s Eye. If the collar crystal is unscratched and retains its full 30 hit point threshold, the merchant offers the standard 99 silver baseline (110 minus 10% for a tier 1 seller), crediting the sum directly to the avatar’s World Bank ledger. If the piece requires stitch repair or crystal re-tuning, the shopkeeper deducts repair expenses and local import tariffs from their final payout.
  • Clandestine Dens, Smuggler Wharfs, and Black-Market Fences:
    • Operating within hidden cellars, unregulated sea docks, and shadowy alleys beyond the direct supervision of city watches and tax collectors, black-market operators trade this choker as an indispensable safeguard against political assassination and poisoned vintage plots.
    • In these illicit environments, the World Bank network is rejected entirely; all transactions demand immediate payment in physical, minted metal coinage, primarily solid gold pieces.
    • Black-market vendors enforce the rule of absolute full cost, routinely charging markups depending on the buyer’s perceived urgency. Unaffiliated buyers must pay between 110 and 220 silver coins (delivered as 11 to 22 physical gold coins), receiving zero guild discounts regardless of rank or reputation.
    • Liquidating the choker through a black-market fence provides the benefit of total anonymity, as no logs are kept and no reports are forwarded to city magistrates. Fences pay strictly in physical metal currency, offering the standard baseline of 99 silver coins (9 gold, 9 silver) under ordinary demand, or paying upwards of 198 to 220 silver coins (roughly 20 to 22 gold coins) if rival factions or nervous court figures are actively seeking reliable poison-detection gear.
  • Rural Trading Posts, Roadside Caravans, and Island Village Stalls:
    • In agrarian settlements, coastal fishing hamlets with fewer than one hundred residents, or itinerant covered-wagon camps moving along military-patrolled roads, formal guildhalls do not exist, and market values fluctuate based on isolation and local access.
    • A wandering merchant operating out of a covered wagon who understands the folklore of the Sovereign Palate may price the choker at a premium, demanding 130 to 140 silver coins from travelers who must pay in local regional coins, non-metal trade tokens, or bartered rations.
    • If the rural trader lacks the specialized appraisal skill or magical focus needed to discern the myth-magic enchantment, they may perceive the choker as nothing more than a used silk ribbon with an ornamental mineral clasp. In such cases, an avatar can acquire the item for as little as 30 to 45 silver coins, or conversely, be offered only 20 to 30 silver coins when attempting to sell it to an unimpressed village barterer who views it as impractical luxury fluff.

Tactical and Environmental Applications of Myth 19 of the Sovereign Palate

  • High Courts, Palaces, and Diplomatic Feasts:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Attending an elaborate state dinner hosted by an island nation’s Royal Court, the wearer assumes an air of haughty sophistication while adjusting the silk choker at their throat. When presented with rare wines, foreign delicacies, or suspicious communal toasts suspected of harboring foul reagents, the avatar triggers the active Condescending Purge by lightly brushing a fingertip against the amber crystal and delivering a sharp verbal critique of the host’s cellar standards. The gesture appears as an aristocratic snub to court observers, yet it instantly neutralizes non-magical toxins, contact poisons, and microbial taints in the chalice, shielding the wearer from court intrigue and targeted political assassinations without causing a diplomatic rupture.
    • Offensive Roleplay: During formal negotiations between rival ambassadorial factions, the user uses Vintage Discernment to publicly expose an opponent’s deceit. By swirling a goblet of spirits, raising it to the nose, and loudly dissecting its biological origins and chemical makeup, the wearer announces subtle trace impurities, cheap base alcohol blends, or covert sedatives slipped in by rival aides. This weaponized connoisseurship embarrasses opposing diplomats, exposes the incompetence or treachery of their hosts, and secures an upper hand in territorial or tax trade talks.
  • Urban Taverns, Slums, and Back-Alley Docks:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Trapped in a seedy tavern where street cutthroats seek to drug and rob visiting travelers, the avatar relies on Rejection of the Base while surveying local fare. When handed tainted ale or rancid meat, the choker’s passive warding repels ingested contaminants, providing advantage on saving throws to resist sleep draughts and gut rots. Should a fight erupt within close quarters, the choker’s intrinsic 1 Armor Check helps deflect glancing strikes from thrown tankards or concealed daggers as the avatar slips out toward guarded avenues.
    • Offensive Roleplay: In dealing with subterranean smugglers or black-market dealers attempting to fence adulterated alchemy batches, the wearer steps forward with theatrical disgust. By deploying Vintage Discernment as an action, the avatar immediately rattles off every hidden filler agent, watered-down solvent, and counterfeit stabilizer present in the vendor’s vials. Demanding pure goods while exposing the fence’s poor craft in front of prospective buyers collapses the dealer’s leverage, forcing steep trade concessions or panic from illicit merchants terrified of losing their reputation.
  • Untamed Swamps, Fungal Forests, and Wilderness Expanses:
    • Defensive Roleplay: While trekking through marshes, rotten bogs, and toxic jungles where drinking water is fouled with parasites and stagnant rot, the avatar acts as the expedition’s survival anchor. Rather than wasting charges from delicate filtration items, the avatar expends an action to invoke Condescending Purge upon collected rainwater, marsh sludge, or suspect beast carcasses, transforming rank swamp water into pure, palatable vintage broth that keeps the party hydrated and free from debilitating waterborne maladies.
    • Offensive Roleplay: When tracking venomous swamp horrors, predatory serpents, or toxic fungal monsters, the wearer uses their heightened Aristocratic Palate to inspect plant secretions, venom splatter, and disturbed soil. The avatar deduces the monster’s recent diet, biological lineage, and chemical weaknesses by evaluating trail scents and foliage decay with alchemical critique. Relaying these exact vulnerabilities to party members allows the strike team to coat their weapons in neutralizing solvents or set targeted elemental ambushes before the creature can unleash its natural venom.
  • Subterranean Mines, Ancient Crypts, and Deep Caverns:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Deep underground, where stagnant mine sumps, toxic seepage, and foul damp collect in stone basins, the avatar relies on the choker to prevent accidental poisoning. If an ancient seal is breached and strange, ancient fluids spill across provisions, the wearer’s passive resistance prevents sickness from inhaled mineral dust or mold spores, allowing the explorer to remain clear-headed while navigating dark tunnels without torchlight flare.
    • Offensive Roleplay: While looting forgotten crypts or delving into abandoned laboratory caches of fallen mages, the user encounters unlabeled flasks, ancient preserved jars, and volatile alchemical decoctions. By utilizing Vintage Discernment from arm’s reach, the avatar deciphers the dormant magical and biological properties of forgotten compounds without exposing themselves to skin contact or noxious gas triggers. Identifying active acids, incendiary oils, or explosive reagents allows the avatar to repurpose these dormant ancient fluids as makeshift siege grenades or breach charges against fortified subterranean vaults.
  • Maritime Vessels, Ocean Reefs, and Salt Flats:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Aboard sailing vessels undergoing long oceanic voyages where freshwater supplies turn brackish and ship rations succumb to weevils and rot, the wearer maintains the health of the crew. By using Condescending Purge across storage casks, the avatar strips foulness from spoiled water barrels and preserves dried meats, preventing crew fatigue and morale collapse during extended journeys against the prevailing east-to-west sea currents.
    • Offensive Roleplay: During coastal skirmishes or naval boardings against hostile crews, the avatar employs Vintage Discernment to inspect cargo holds, identifying volatile naval pitch, weaponized alchemical oils, or smuggled reagents among the enemy’s ballast. By rapidly calling out which crates contain highly volatile compounds, the user directs their allies’ attacks to detonate enemy ammunition reserves, disabling the opposing ship’s maneuverability while preserving valuable, non-volatile cargo for salvage.

Perception of Activation:

User’s Perspective

  • Sight:
    • The amber crystal mounted at the throat flares with a warm, steady golden-honey luminescence, emitting a localized pulse that illuminates the immediate weave without projecting blinding glare into the surrounding area.
    • The user’s field of view shifts into a heightened diagnostic spectrum where organic substances, liquids, and prepared dishes take on distinct luminous gradients: pure, uncontaminated vintages and broths shimmer in clear amber tones, while chemical fillers, non-magical poisons, and microbial taints pulse with sickly violet or dull greenish-black thread patterns.
  • Sound:
    • Ambient room noise and background chatter soften slightly, replaced by a subtle, rhythmic crystalline chime that rings softly in the inner ear whenever an alchemical or organic compound enters arm’s reach.
    • Toxic, curdled, or tainted substances emit a faint, abrasive hum like dry reeds grinding together, audibly signaling contamination directly into the wearer’s perception.
  • Smell:
    • The nasal passages are instantly permeated by the dry, fragrant bouquet of sun-ripened orange peel, toasted coriander, and old cellared oak barrels.
    • Putrid environmental stenches, rancid grease, and noxious airborne fumes are actively filtered out, reduced to faint mineral undertones that allow the wearer to isolate subtle aromatic notes without gagging or nasal burn.
  • Taste:
    • The tongue experiences a sudden, crisp dryness resembling the astringent bite of an aged, tannic wine followed by a lingering touch of sweet candied rind across the palate.
    • Salivation increases slightly as the taste receptors become intensely sensitized to balance, instantly detecting acidity, bitterness, salinity, and hidden chemical traces with immediate certainty.
  • Touch:
    • The raw silk band tightens almost imperceptibly against the throat, shifting from the soft feel of cloth to the firm, snug sensation of a polished silver collar.
    • A warm, invigorating pulse radiates outward from the amber stone, passing down the chest and relaxing the digestive tract and diaphragm into a state of total ease.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Mind’s Eye Synchronization: The wearer’s Mind’s Eye interface immediately highlights the item’s statistics, displaying its current 30 hit points, 1 Armor Check value, and active attunement status directly in the user’s conscious focus.
    • Epicurean Clairvoyance: When concentrating on a dish or goblet, the user receives an instantaneous mental dossier detailing the age, region of growth, harvesting method, and preparation history of the target consumables.
    • Conduit Alignment: The user feels their internal thought energy lock into the crystal’s matrix, generating cognitive feedback that confirms the myth-magic loop is fully primed to reject base substances.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Sight:
    • Observers see the pale, coin-sized amber jewel resting at the hollow of the wearer’s throat ignite with an inner, liquid-gold radiance that glimmers through the silk setting.
    • Individuals perceiving through True Sight register a tight, swirling ultraviolet corona enveloping the wearer’s neck and mouth, while those utilizing the Mind’s Eye detect an active warding field signaling refined taste and poison rejection.
  • Sound:
    • No loud discharge is heard, but onlookers within arm’s reach hear a soft, bell-like ring as the crystal synchronizes, accompanied by the crisp rustle of silk settling against skin.
    • The wearer’s voice takes on a subtle, resonant timbre, making spoken critiques sound naturally authoritative and commanding across a banqueting table.
  • Smell:
    • A faint, pleasant breeze of dried citrus, toasted wood, and spiced preserves wafts outward from the choker, briefly masking unpleasant tavern or kitchen odors for individuals standing nearby.
  • Taste:
    • Distant onlookers perceive no change in taste, though anyone sharing a drinking vessel or plate that has been purified by the choker notices an immediate crispness and complete absence of metallic or bitter aftertastes.
  • Touch:
    • If an observer reaches out to touch the activated choker or the wearer’s throat, the fabric feels entirely frictionless and warm to the touch, resisting grip or soil.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Mind’s Eye Feedback: An onlooker directing their Mind’s Eye toward the user immediately sees the title “Connoisseur” overlaying the target’s presence, alongside an aura denoting active resistance against ingestible hazards.
    • Aura of Disdain: Beings with latent psychic or emotional sensitivity feel a mild, passive wave of haughty superiority radiating from the user, making base threats and crude intimidation attempts feel strangely unrefined and out of place.

Positives

  • Provides infallible detection of spoiled foodstuffs, rancid fluids, and mundane alchemical toxins before they can be consumed.
  • Grants active non-magical poison and impurity purification, turning rank swamp water or foul rations into wholesome, palatable fare.
  • Enhances all analytical, appraisal, and historical skill checks regarding food, wine, alchemy reagents, and harvested organic components.
  • Bolsters personal defenses with a +1 Armor Check while imparting advantage on saving throws against ingested poisons, venomous bites, and waterborne pathogens.

Negatives

  • The sharp, astringent dryness that coats the tongue upon activation demands frequent sips of water to maintain comfort during extended use.
  • The distinct citrus and oak aroma, along with the visible golden glow of the crystal, prevents the wearer from hiding easily in pitch-black or scent-tracked environments while the item is active.
  • The heightened sensory acuity makes exposure to overwhelmingly foul environments (such as rotting sewer troughs or open refuse pits) mentally jarring, inducing mild nausea until the focus is shifted.
  • It offers no innate defense against purely magical or supernatural curses, venomous gas clouds, or direct physical trauma beyond its baseline 1 Armor Check.

Crafting Recipe: Myth 19 of the Sovereign Palate

Materials Needed

  • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal, approximately the size and weight of a coin, harvested from a slain creature possessing heightened sensory or taste organs.
  • One-half yard of fine, cream-dyed raw mulberry silk ribbon, free of fraying, grease, or chemical treatments.
  • Three fluid drams of aged vintage wine spirit or sun-dried citrus peel distillate to act as an aromatic primer.
  • One fluid ounce of preservative animal bile or gastric fluid extracted via a fluid collector from a beast possessing natural immunity to ingested rot or poison, such as a carrion scavenger or swamp croaker.
  • One foot of silver-plated copper wire for mounting and framing.
  • One small brass tag blank with an iron stylus ring for inscription.
  • One silver-plated brass toggle clasp shaped into the likeness of a banquet chalice.

Tools Required

  • One Fluid Collector with an extraction needle.
  • Jeweler’s pliers and metal wire cutters.
  • Tailor’s fine sewing shears and polished bone needles.
  • A small glass mixing dish with an agate stirring rod.
  • A low-heat spirit lamp for reagent infusion.
  • An arcane focus implement to align and channel cognitive thought into the crystal matrix.

Skill Requirements

  • Weaving and Tailoring: Skill Level 5 or higher to handle delicate raw silk without snagging and execute clean, hidden seams along the neckband.
  • Magical Crafting: Skill Level 5 or higher to align the thought-conduit pathways and affix the Tier 1 magic crystal to the silk band without causing lattice fracture.
  • Alchemical Crafting: Skill Level 4 or higher to successfully temper the organic digestive fluids with the citrus distillate and bond them into the crystal’s outer surface.

Crafting Steps

  • Reagent Preparation: Pour the citrus distillate into the glass mixing dish over the gentle heat of the spirit lamp. Using the fluid collector, slowly dispense the gastric fluid of the scavenger beast into the alcohol. Stir continuously with the agate rod until the solution clarifies into a fragrant, amber-tinted liquid that smells distinctly of dried peel and cellared oak.
  • Crystal Treatment: Submerge the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into the warmed alchemical mixture. Allow it to steep under steady heat for three hours so the biological fluids permeate the micro-fissures of the stone. Remove the crystal and let it air-cure for twelve hours until it develops a persistent golden sheen.
  • Plaque Inscription and Mounting: Using the jeweler’s pliers, fashion the silver-plated copper wire into a bezel setting designed to grip the amber crystal securely without obstructing its exposed face, ensuring the line-of-sight requirement for activation remains intact. Take the brass tag blank, engrave the maker’s mark and title using the iron stylus, and link it to the lower ring of the wire setting with a small jump ring.
  • Ribbon Tailoring: Cut the cream-dyed silk ribbon to an exact throat circumference, folding the raw edges inward and sewing them flat with concealed stitches. Affix the silver-plated chalice toggle clasp to the terminal ends of the ribbon, testing the tension to guarantee a snug, comfortable fit against the neck.
  • Setting Integration: Stitch the wire-mounted crystal assembly directly into the midpoint of the silk choker. Reinforce the attachment points with cross-stitched silk cord, verifying that the amber stone rests centered over the hollow of the throat.
  • Arcane Conduiting and Attunement Priming: Place the finished choker onto a clean wooden surface, laying both hands over the band while holding the arcane focus. Recite the epicurean verse of the Sovereign Palate in a clear, haughty somatic cadence. Concentrate absolute mental conviction on the concept of refined superiority and the innate rejection of all base contaminants until the amber crystal flares with a brief flash of honey-colored light, permanently binding the myth magic to the neckband and setting its baseline 1 Armor Check and 30 item hit points.

Throat-Ruler and Bitter Porridge of Nine Pails

In the season before the sky was divided into seven turnings, when the mud was yet full of hot fat and the four-legged things had voices like clay whistles, there lived the taster named Vane-of-the-Hollow-Cellars. He was a person whose neck was like a peeled reed, and he did not permit his teeth to press upon any bread that had been looked upon by an angry woman or baked in an oven of wet alder. He walked always with his chin pointed into the clouds, smelling the wind from two leagues away to see if the sheep of his neighbors were eating sour weeds.

The king of that place was named King Geth-of-the-Broad-Ribs, whose belly was as wide as a brewer’s vat and who ate river-crabs whole, shell and dirt together, spitting only the claws into the rushes. King Geth took great anger that Vane would not sit at his bench to swallow the salt-mutton. The king spoke through his beard, which was greasy with mutton-oil, saying words that are now crumbled where the moisture has rotted the hide-leaf: Lo, this throat-man holds his nose as if my kitchen were a swamp of old skins. Let him be brought before the great hearth, and let him drink the nine pails of the gray-moss stew, or let his head be taken off and dried for a door-weight.

Vane was dragged upon his two sandals into the hall of timber. Around his throat he had tied a strip of white worm-hair that had been steeped in the juice of sour citrus, and in the middle of the strip was fastened a yellow pebble taken from the liver of a great serpent that lived upon dry wine-skins. The cook of the king was an ugly dwarf named Kroll, whose ears were thick as parsnips; Kroll had gathered for three years all the dregs of the vinegar-vats, the gall of blind eels, the bile of water-scorpions, and the scrapings from the copper kettles where the dog-meat had turned green. All of this he boiled into nine great earthen pails, until the steam that rose up killed seven sparrows that sat upon the ceiling-beams.

The king laughed until his belt split, crying: Open the tongue of the delicate one, and pour in the first kettle!

Vane did not weep, nor did he bend his knees into the rushes. He looked upon the black pot with eyes like two frost-flakes. He lifted his hand to the yellow pebble at his throat and made a speech of such terrible scorn that the stones in the chimney began to sweat. He said: This brew is not fit to wash the feet of an ox that has died of the dropsy. The vinegar was picked in the dark by a boy with dirty thumbs; the gall belongs to an eel that choked upon stagnant moss; the kettle was scraped with an iron knife that had been used to peel rotten onions. My belly will not hold such swine-swill, and because it is beneath my breeding, the stew must turn its face away.

He placed his finger upon the rim of the pot. Behold, the translator who made the first markings upon the bone-slate notes that a noise was heard like the snapping of dry pine needles. The black grease in the kettle began to curdle and turn clear, shrinking away from his nail as if it were red-hot bronze. The rot ran out through the bottom of the earthenware like clear river water, leaving behind only seven grains of sweet white salt and a fragrance like the peel of oranges dried in the sun of the fifth year.

The king would not believe his two eyes. He ordered the second pail to be thrown directly into Vane’s face, but when the foul liquor touched the edge of the cream-dyed band around his neck, it turned sweet like the honey of hill-bees, running down his beard in drops of amber syrup that smelled of toasted spices. Vane opened his mouth and swallowed two drops, and his tongue did not turn black, nor did his skin break out into yellow blisters. He wiped his lips with his sleeve and said: The sweetness is yet too thick; your honey-master does not skim the wax with a clean paddle.

Then the king’s heart became as black as charcoal with wrath. He snatched his own golden cup, which had been filled with the juice of the night-shade berry and the venom of the double-headed adder, mixed with wine that had sourly rotted in an unwashed bladder. He held it out and shouted: Drink this, O taster of clouds, or my guards shall nail your ears to the lintel!

Vane smiled with great haughtiness, a smile so narrow that it looked like a thread of silver. He took the golden cup with two fingers, not wishing his skin to touch the greasy metal where the king had put his greasy thumb. He chanted three words from the old books that are now lost beneath the sea, tapped the amber stone upon the side of the gold, and took a great gulp before all the lords and the spear-men.

The venom inside the cup did not kill him. Instead, the poison became afraid of his pride; the bile turned into an aged wine from the high valleys, possessing the fragrance of wild plums and old barrel-wood. Vane drank it to the bottom, smacking his mouth with great disdain. When he was finished, he set the chalice upside down upon the king’s board and said: A tolerable draught, yet it lacks the cellar-frost, and the wood was slightly green when the cooper bent the staves. You are an ignorant man, O King, and your house smells of boiled dog.

The king fell backward from his stool in pure fury, striking his temple upon a beer-keg, and his soul flew out of his mouth like a black crow, never to return. The spear-men and the cooks were so amazed by the power of the small stone at Vane’s neck that they did not cast him into the dungeon; they opened the high gates and let him walk away into the mountains, carrying only his two sandals and his white ribbon, which never gathered dirt even when he slept upon the dung-heaps of the roadside.

The original ribbon was kept for many hundreds of winters in the salt-vaults of the eastern city, where the women used to touch it against their broth-pots whenever the summer turned the fat sour, until a thief with a wooden foot stole it away into the uncharted ocean.

The Moral of the Story: He who carries a belly full of coarse greed will choke upon the finest broth of the cellar, while he whose pride is as sharp as a diamond may swallow the sting of the adder and find it wanting in salt.
