Lore: Crafted in the coastal settlements of the southern islands where oceanic currents collide with fierce tropical winds, this item was created by ancient spiritual practitioners known for regulating the harmonious flow of nature’s forces. Practitioners recognized that nature achieves longevity not through overwhelming strength, but through the delicate counterweight of opposing elements. When a practitioner channeled their inner vital energy through raw volcanic glass and oceanic cedar, they created vessels designed to steady the body and soothe erratic elemental surges. This specific charm was handed down to apprentices learning to maintain steady footing on shifting wave-lines and volatile atmospheric transitions.

Description: The item consists of a hand-carved pendant made from dense ironwood, inlaid with smooth oceanic cedar and centered with a polished bead of black volcanic glass. Suspended by a braided cord woven from sea-grass fiber, it rests lightly against the chest. Small runic etchings representing calm waters and gentle gales are etched along its outer rim. When held or worn, the glass bead emits a subtle, rhythmic purple glow that pulses in sync with the wearer’s heartbeat, projecting an aura of physical and mental poise.

Multiple Passive Magics:

  • Equilibrium Alignment: While the pendant is worn and attuned, the avatar gains an absolute sense of balance. The avatar receives advantage on saving throws and skill checks made to resist being knocked prone, tripped, or destabilized by sudden environmental shifts, rough seas, or slippery surfaces.
  • Kinetic Counterweight: Whenever the avatar takes physical damage from an attack, the magical matrix within the volcanic glass absorbs a tiny fraction of the impact energy. This energy creates a stabilizing force around the avatar’s feet, granting a +2 bonus to stability-related skill checks for one minute following the attack. This passive effect does not stack with itself.

Multiple Activable Magics:

  • Steadying Surge (Activable):
    • Trigger / Cost: Requires 1 Action to hold the volcanic glass bead and recite a short single-word mantra.
    • Effect: The avatar invokes the calming elemental nature of the charm. The avatar removes one of the following active conditions currently affecting them: Dazed, Shaken, or Flat-Footed. Once activated, this ability cannot be used again until the avatar completes a long rest.
  • Levelling Wave (Activable):
    • Trigger / Cost: Requires 1 Action and the use of a Somatic chant spoken aloud.
    • Effect: The avatar releases a localized wave of counter-kinetic force in a 10-foot radius centered on themselves. All creatures within the area must succeed on a saving throw against a Difficulty Class of 11 or have their movement speed reduced by half for 1 round as their momentum is neutralized. This ability deals no damage and can be used twice per day.

Shops and Commerce for Kahuna 482 of the Tonal Balance (Venues and Transactions for the Item).

  • Coastal Maritime Outfitters and Dockside Provisioners: Found along the bustling wharf districts of port cities across island nations such as Aterian, Minoan, or Carthage. These family-run establishments specialize in naval supplies, tide-charts, and protective accessories for sailors, airship deckhands, and coastal navigators. To purchase the item here, an avatar must negotiate directly with the shopkeeper, who values the item highly for its ability to prevent falls during severe sea storms. An avatar selling the item to a maritime outfitter will find the merchant haggling based on standard merchant practice, reducing the payout by roughly 10% times the avatar’s tier level.
    • Purchase Cost: 12 Silver (or 24 Nickel in local markets)
    • Sale Payout: 9 Silver (deposited directly into the World Bank account for a Tier 1 avatar)
  • Island Crafting Collectives and Village Artisans: Located in small inland settlements or rural island towns where local woodworkers and glass-smiths carve charms using native materials. These shops operate on direct cash transactions and local trade needs rather than global market trends. Buying the item involves selecting hand-carved goods directly from display pegs, while selling requires demonstrating the pendant’s active magic to the artisan, who may buy it for raw component harvesting or resale to passing travel caravans.
    • Purchase Cost: 10 Silver (or 1 Gold)
    • Sale Payout: 8 Silver 5 Copper
  • Faction Quartermasters and Guildhall Stores: Located within state-sanctioned Guildhalls or faction outposts in central cities. Access to these shops requires active membership in the relevant guild or faction, as well as holding an open rank badge. Members enjoy preferred pricing on protective charms and adventuring supplies. Transactions here are logged carefully by military appointees or guild officials.
    • Purchase Cost with Guild Discount: 9 Silver (reflecting a 10% discount off the suggested 10 Silver base value for a Tier 1 member)
    • Sale Payout to Guild Master: 9 Silver (transferred directly to the World Bank)
  • Black-Market Dens and Back-Alley Fences: Situated in unregulated underground districts, hidden coves, or back-alley bazaars outside the jurisdiction of state guards and local mayors. Fences deal in undocumented or stolen goods and demand absolute anonymity. Transactions here bypass the World Bank completely and require payment in physical gold or precious metals handed directly between buyer and seller.
    • Purchase Cost: 15 Silver (or 1 Gold 5 Silver, due to inflated black-market rates for unrecorded magic gear)
    • Sale Payout: 10 Silver in physical coin (black-market fences may pay up to twice what a normal merchant offers if they have an immediate buyer for stability-enhancing charms)

Roleplay Application of Kahuna 482 of the Tonal Balance Across Environments (Combat and Tactical Roleplay in Varied Environments).

  • High-Altitude Zeppelin Decks and Cloud City Platforms: When navigating floating mage tower catwalks or defending the open deck of a steam-driven airship thousands of feet above the sea, verticality and gale-force winds are the primary hazards.
    • Defensive Roleplay: As an enemy airship glides alongside and unleashes a pressurized steam cannon burst or a sudden gust of wind, the avatar grips the ironwood pendant as the deck tilts sharply. The player describes their avatar’s feet locking onto the slick wooden planks as the Kinetic Counterweight and Equilibrium Alignment passive magics activate, preventing the character from sliding off the edge or being forced into the Prone condition.
    • Offensive Roleplay: During a boarding action, the avatar leaps across the gap onto the enemy vessel’s open rigging. The player narrates stepping directly into the center of a group of hostile sky-pirates and invoking the Levelling Wave activable magic with a sweeping somatic gesture. As the counter-kinetic wave pulses outward, the sudden loss of momentum causes the surrounding defenders to stagger and lose their balance, reducing their movement speed and leaving them vulnerable to follow-up strikes from party members.
  • Undersea Metropolises and Submerged Cave Systems: Within deep ocean trenches or flooded ruins where water currents, silt, and aquatic pressures dictate movement.
    • Defensive Roleplay: While fighting inside a submerged cavern where a wounded sea monster creates violent undercurrents, the avatar uses the Steadying Surge activable magic. The player roleplays reciting a muffled underwater somatic mantra through their breathing apparatus while touching the glowing volcanic glass bead. The magic dispels the disorientation of the Dazed condition inflicted by the monster’s tail-swipe, allowing the avatar to regain their bearings and maintain their stance on the seabed.
    • Offensive Roleplay: The avatar approaches a group of hostile aquatic guards swimming through a narrow coral archway. The player describes the avatar holding out the pendant to channel the Levelling Wave ability, projecting a localized ripple through the water column that disrupts the swimming rhythms of the guards, stalling their approach and locking them in place for ranged projectile attacks.
  • Unstable Volcanic Tunnels and Earth-Rumble Caverns: In underground regions characterized by active magma flows, crumbling rock bridges, and frequent subterranean seismic tremors caused by magma movement.
    • Defensive Roleplay: When a sudden tremor shakes a narrow stone bridge spanning a chasm, the rest of the party struggles to stay upright. The avatar’s player describes the pendant glowing with a vivid purple aura as the passive Equilibrium Alignment takes hold, allowing the avatar to walk calmly across the trembling stone surface without making falling checks or being caught Flat-Footed by hidden traps.
    • Offensive Roleplay: In a cramped cavern corridor, the avatar engages a group of subterranean beasts. After absorbing a heavy blow from a beast’s claw, the avatar leverages the stored energy from the Kinetic Counterweight passive. The player roleplays using the boosted balance and stability to plant their heels, absorb the momentum, and immediately retaliate with a weapon attack without being pushed back into the path of an active magma vent.
  • Dense Jungle Canopy and Slippery Coastal Swamps: Across wet, muddy terrain filled with overgrown root systems, moss-covered logs, and hidden sinkholes.
    • Defensive Roleplay: Ambushed by feral hunters in a rain-slicked marshland, an attacker attempts a trip action using a hooked polearm. The player describes the avatar’s body remaining upright as the pendant’s passive magic shifts the avatar’s center of gravity, causing the polearm to slide harmlessly off their leg while maintaining full combat readiness.
    • Offensive Roleplay: The avatar rushes forward to cut off a fleeing scout through thick mud. Upon reaching effective range, the player activates the Levelling Wave, describing a ring of force flattening the surrounding marsh grass and muddying the water. The pulse forces the scout to struggle through the heavy terrain at half speed, securing an opportunity for the party to capture or defeat the target.

Perception of Activation:

User’s Perspective

  • Sight: The central bead of black volcanic glass pulses with a sudden, intense violet and deep purple light that surges outward through the carved wooden grooves, making the etched wave runes glow brightly along the outer rim.
  • Hearing: A low, rhythmic hum, reminiscent of a distant ocean tide crashing against a cliff, resonates within the user’s inner ear, accompanied by a soft crackle of displaced air.
  • Touch: The pendant warms instantly against the collarbone, sending a soothing, wave-like sensation of pressure down the spine that settles heavily into the feet, creating a grounded, immovable feeling.
  • Smell: A sharp, crisp scent of salt spray and sea mist washes over the user’s nostrils, instantly replacing any ambient foul odors or dust.
  • Taste: A faint metallic and briny taste settles at the back of the tongue, similar to ocean air inhaled during a strong sea gale.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (Mind’s Eye): The Mind’s Eye reveals a bright ultraviolet aura flaring outward from the neck slot, briefly illuminating the inner flow of arcane energy as it locks the avatar’s physical matrix into alignment with the local gravitational field.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (Soul Sight): The avatar perceives a swirling purple tether connecting the item’s internal crystalline structure directly to their vital core, dampening kinetic shockwaves before they register as physical trauma.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (Tremorsense / Spatial Awareness): The user feels a momentary mental pulse expanding outward along the ground, clearly outlining every physical ledge, crack, and dip within a 10-foot radius.

Observer’s Perspective

  • Sight: Onlookers witness the carved wooden ring flare with glowing purple runes as the central black glass orb shines like a miniature storm cloud, casting sharp violet shadows across the avatar’s face and torso.
  • Hearing: Nearby allies and foes hear a soft, rushing sound like a sudden blast of ocean wind, followed by a low, vibrating thud as the avatar plants their stance.
  • Touch: Standing immediately adjacent to the user reveals a sudden, cool pressure wave rippling through the air, briefly causing loose gravel, dust, or small pebbles at the avatar’s feet to lock in place.
  • Smell: Those nearby catch a subtle whiff of ozone combined with fresh coastal ocean air wafting from the activated pendant.
  • Taste: Observers within close proximity do not experience a direct taste, though the sudden shift in air pressure creates a faint dryness in the throat.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (True Sight): Viewers possessing True Sight see a brilliant sphere of ultraviolet energy expand 10 feet out from the pendant, briefly neutralizing external magical turbulence and stabilizing the atmospheric weave around the user.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception (Blind Sight / Echo Location): Creatures utilizing Blind Sight perceive a solid, impenetrable density form around the avatar’s footing, as if the ground itself had risen up to clasp their boots.

Positives

  • Immediate stabilization that prevents tripping, stumbling, or being forced Prone by violent environmental changes or heavy physical strikes.
  • Instant removal of disorienting conditions such as Dazed, Shaken, or Flat-Footed upon active invocation.
  • Creates a disruption field that slows surrounding enemies, opening up tactical space for allies to maneuver or launch targeted ranged attacks.
  • Provides clear extra-sensory feedback regarding surrounding terrain stability through the Mind’s Eye and spatial awareness.

Negatives

  • The bright purple glow and rushing wind sound immediately betray the avatar’s position to stealth-focused foes or nearby guards.
  • The distinct oceanic smell and ozone flare make it impossible to hide the activation from creatures with heightened senses or True Sight.
  • Frequent activation causes a brief, dull lingering headache as the avatar’s extra-sensory perceptions re-adjust to normal baseline senses.
  • The sudden kinetic counterweight forces the avatar to remain anchored, making high-agility airborne maneuvers slightly more cumbersome during the precise moment of activation.

Crafting Recipe: Kahuna 482 of the Tonal Balance

Materials Needed

  • 1 block of native Ironwood (seasoned and shaped for the outer ring)
  • 1 block of Oceanic Cedar (carved for the inner concentric inlay)
  • 1 Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized catalyst to power the magical matrix)
  • 1 vial of Raw Volcanic Glass Resin or 1 unrefined Obsidian Sphere
  • 1 strand of braided Sea-Grass Fiber (length suitable for a neck cord)
  • 2 drams of Fluid Collector-harvested Tree Sap (derived from coastal hardwoods to seal the wood and runes)
  • 1 silver coin (melted or drawn into wire for runic inlay highlights)

Tools Required

  • Carving chisels and fine wood-carving knives
  • A specialized Hand-Held Attunement Workbench or Jeweler’s Bench
  • A Fluid Collector (for gathering pure tree sap resin during preparation)
  • A small ceramic crucible and miniature blow-torch or furnace (for melting volcanic glass and metallic elements)
  • Fine sandpaper or abrasive pumice stone

Skill Requirements

  • Woodworking / Fine Crafting Skill: Level 6 or higher (Base skill 5 + 1 for Tier 1 crafting target)
  • Magical Crafting / Rune Inscription Skill: Level 6 or higher
  • Crafter Tier: Tier 1 Avatar or higher

Crafting Steps

  1. Preparation of Wood Elements: Using carving chisels, cut and shape the ironwood block into a smooth, circular outer frame measuring three inches in diameter. Hollow out the center to receive the secondary wood layer. Carefully carve the inner sleeve from the oceanic cedar block so that it fits flush inside the ironwood ring without gaps.
  2. Inscription of Equilibrium Runes: Using fine carving knives, etch the traditional tide-lines and wave runes along the outer face of the ironwood ring. Ensure the runic grooves are deep enough to hold both the magical sap sealant and silver wire highlights.
  3. Melting and Shaping the Crystal Core: Place the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into the ceramic crucible alongside the unrefined obsidian. Heat the mixture until it liquefies into a glowing, dark violet compound. Pour the molten material into a spherical mold to form the central volcanic glass orb. Allow it to cool slowly so the magical structure stabilizes without fracturing.
  4. Setting the Core and Matrix: Insert the cooled volcanic glass sphere directly into the center of the oceanic cedar inlay. Press the cedar sleeve firmly into the outer ironwood ring, using the harvested tree sap as a binding adhesive. The sap acts as an organic conduit connecting the wood to the magic crystal matrix.
  5. Inlaying the Runes: Fill the etched wave runes on the outer rim with thin strands of silver wire, pounding them flat into the grooves. Coat the entire surface with the remaining tree sap resin to seal the wood against moisture, salt air, and physical wear.
  6. Attaching the Suspension Cord: Thread the braided sea-grass cord through the top mounting loop carved into the upper edge of the ironwood ring. Secure the ends with a double-knotted weaver’s hitch.
  7. Final Attunement and Activation Test: Hold the completed pendant over the jeweler’s bench and conduct a 10-minute ritual attunement. Channel a single point of Mana or spell energy into the volcanic glass sphere. Roll a d20 to verify the stability of the merger process: a roll of 2 or higher successfully binds the properties into the new item, while a roll of 1 indicates a catastrophic failure that destroys the component materials.

Glass Ball of Two Feet Balance

In the time before the great moon Saṃsāra had numbers upon her years, there walked the land a man who was named Kahuna of the Big Water. He was not a king, nor did he possess many cows or iron tools, but his ears heard the talking of the wind when the wind was angry.

In those days, the sky-island was not sitting still. It did fall to the left, and then it did fall to the right, and the people did tumble down into the dark water like sacks of dry grain. The people cried with much wetness upon their eyes, saying, “O Kahuna, our feet are like the wet fish! We cannot stand upon the earth without the crashing of our heads!”

Kahuna went unto the place where the fiery mountain vomits the black rock that looks like frozen night. He did sit there for seven suns and seven eclipses of the giant ball in the sky. He did not eat the fruit of the tree, nor did he drink the coconut milk. On the eighth day, a great bird with four wings did land upon his knee. The bird spoke in the tongue of the ancient forgotten ones, which is translated poorly as: “Take the stone of black shining, and place it inside the heart of the heavy tree, lest the world shake thee into the soup.”

Kahuna took his small copper knife. He cut the ironwood tree until his fingers were bleeding red water. He took the black glass from the fire-mountain. He rubbed the glass upon his belly until the glass became round like the eyeball of a pig. Then he spoke the strange words of the sky-bird: “O Stone, do not let my feet go to the sky while my head goes to the dirt!”

When the great storm of the three moons came upon the island, the winds blew with the strength of ten thousand angry giant lizards. The trees were pulled out of the earth like grass pulled by a small child. The houses of the people were turned into dust and blown into the deep blue water. But Kahuna stood upon the peak of the mountain. He wore the black glass upon his neck with the braided grass of the shore.

The wind hit Kahuna on his left side, but his body did not bend. The wind hit Kahuna on his right side, but his legs were like the roots of the mountain. The people held onto his legs, and because Kahuna did not fall, fifty men and fifty women were saved from falling into the sea-monsters’ mouths.

When the storm died and the sun Helios came out from behind the black clouds, the people looked at Kahuna with great surprise in their bellies. They saw that the black stone in his wooden circle was shining with the color of the bruised purple plum. They asked him, “How didst thou not fall into the ocean, O Kahuna?”

He answered them in the ancient tongue: “The stone knows where the bottom of the world sits. When the world tilts, the stone tells my knees to push back.”

Many years passed, and Kahuna became very old. His hair became like the white foam upon the wave. Before his soul left his body to seek another vessel in the sky, he gave the necklace to his son, who was named Kahuna the Second. But the translation of the scroll says that the son was foolish and did not understand the balance of two feet. He tried to use the stone to walk upon the air, but the stone only knew how to stand upon the solid ground, and so he fell into a very deep hole and lost his shoe.

The necklace was found many hundred years later by a fisherman who pulled it out of the stomach of a large codfish. It was passed from hand to hand, from island to island, until the numbers of the years began to be written down by the scribes of the Royal Courts. But all who wear the necklace remember the first Kahuna who stood straight when the world was tilted.

Moral of the Story: He who seeks to walk upon the storm must first learn to plant both feet firmly upon the earth, for even the greatest magic cannot save the man who forgets how to stand.
