Lore:
- Carried by the low-ranking court officers and bailiffs who enforce order within the halls of justice on Saṃsāra, this rod embodies the stern, structuring force of divine law.
- Crafted during a ritual aligning the ten Sephiroth with municipal decrees, the baton ensures that legal mandates and court orders carry physical and spiritual weight.
- Early court scribes discovered that combining Kabbalistic numerology with local bailiff traditions allowed officers to keep order without resorting to lethal force.
- The number 18—representing “Chai” or life—was woven into its structure to ensure the bailiff can bind, subdue, and restrain suspects while preserving their life for trial.
- Over centuries, the baton became a universal symbol of lawful authority, respected and feared by those who disrupt judicial proceedings.
Description:
- A dense, 18-inch cudgel carved from dark polished ebony wood, reinforced at both ends with brass caps.
- Fine silver wire filigree runs down the length of the shaft, mapping out the ten Sephirotic nodes connected by twenty-two geometric pathways.
- Eighteen small, flat-cut lapis lazuli stones are inlaid along the handle and guard ring, glowing with a soft sapphire hue when an officer demands order.
- The heavy brass pommel is stamped with a legal seal surrounded by tiny engraved Hebrew script detailing formulas of binding and justice.
- Wrapped in black oil-treated leather around the grip, the weapon feels heavy, balanced, and uncompromising in an officer’s hand.

Acquisition and Commerce of the Magistrate’s Baton
- Municipal Armories, Courthouse Outfitters, and Guild Supply Halls
- Location and Atmosphere: Located within civic districts, regional courthouses, or city guard barracks. These halls feature heavy stone counters, iron-bound chests, and official ledgers where authorized equipment is logged and distributed.
- Purchasing Conditions: Bailiffs, city guards, and court envoys acquire the baton directly through government requisitions or official purchase orders. A buyer must present valid legal credentials or proof of civic employment to complete the sale.
- Selling Conditions: Civic outfitters only repurchase batons from retired or transferring officers. The clerk verifies the official legal seal on the brass pommel and logs the item’s registration number into the local city registry.
- Transaction Cost: Purchases typically cost between 20 and 30 Silver pieces (or 2 to 3 Gold coins) when requisitioned through civic channels. Direct trade-in returns yield approximately 50% of the original cost as a credit toward updated equipment.
- Underground Black Markets, Pawnshops, and Thieves’ Fences
- Location and Atmosphere: Situated in back alleys, docks, or subterranean trade bazaars where illegal goods change hands away from magistrate oversight. These shops are dimly lit, crammed with unvetted relics, and guarded by hired muscle.
- Purchasing Conditions: Criminals, bounty hunters, and mercenary enforcers buy these batons off-the-books to utilize the non-lethal binding and crowd-control properties without holding an official law enforcement commission.
- Selling Conditions: Fences buy stolen or scavenged batons at a discount, often grinding off the registered legal seal or re-carving the brass pommel before reselling the weapon to avoid tracking by city watch diviners.
- Transaction Cost: Illegal purchases command a premium due to street demand and risk, running between 45 and 60 Silver pieces. Fences usually pay no more than 10 to 15 Silver pieces in unrecorded cash to anyone bringing in a stolen baton.
- Arcane Artifact Dealers and Relic Auctions
- Location and Atmosphere: Found in wealthy merchant plazas, university quarters, or private auction houses. These establishments feature glass display cases, velvet draping, and warding circles to prevent magical theft.
- Purchasing Conditions: Collectors, private security contractors, and noble estate bailiffs purchase ornate or historical versions of the baton. Transactions are open to any buyer with sufficient funds, and white-glove delivery is provided.
- Selling Conditions: Dealers require a Mind’s Eye inspection to ensure the eighteen lapis lazuli stones and silver filigree pathways are intact and free from divine or demonic curses before agreeing to buy.
- Transaction Cost: High-end shops and auctions sell pristine or customized batons for 35 to 50 Silver pieces. Selling a well-maintained baton to an artifact dealer yields a direct wire transfer into the seller’s World Bank account minus a 15% appraisal commission.
Tactical Roleplay and Environmental Application
- Courtroom Halls and Civic Chambers
- Offensive Roleplay: When a disgruntled litigant or rogue suspect causes a commotion during judicial proceedings, the bailiff uses the baton to restore order swiftly without endangering bystanders. The player roleplays drawing the dark ebony shaft, slamming the brass pommel onto a desk to activate Order in the Court, releasing a 15-foot shockwave of blue light that disarms agitators. Utilizing Preservative Weight and Judicial Subjugation, the bailiff delivers a firm, non-lethal strike to the primary ringleader, knocking them prone and binding them in spiritual weights for trial.
- Defensive Roleplay: If an armed assassin or mob rushes the magistrate’s bench, the bailiff stands as the primary line of defense. The player roleplays projecting their voice through Voice of the Court to issue an unyielding legal decree, commanding civilians to clear the hall. As hostiles advance, the bailiff uses Contempt Binding, raising the baton to flash its eighteen lapis lazuli stones and wrapping the attackers’ feet in silver bands of light to stall their charge before they can reach officials.
- Crowded City Markets and Public Plazas
- Offensive Roleplay: While pursuing a fleeing suspect through a dense bazaar, the bailiff relies on the baton to apprehend the target without firing lethal projectiles into the crowd. The player roleplays singling out the fugitive through the sea of merchants, pointing the baton to trigger Contempt Binding. As ethereal silver bands entangle the suspect’s ankles, the bailiff closes the distance, using Aura of Gevurah to gain leverage in a physical grapple and pin the suspect to the cobblestones.
- Defensive Roleplay: When surrounded by an angry mob attempting to spring a prisoner, the bailiff uses the baton to hold the perimeter. The player roleplays planting their stance in the center of the street, channeling an aura of stern authority. When rioters step forward, the bailiff uses non-lethal strikes to drive them back, utilizing the Preservative Weight passive to ensure any aggressive civilians are subdued safely without fanning the flames of a fatal riot.
- Subterranean Dungeons and Prison Cells
- Offensive Roleplay: During a prison break or cell-block riot, the bailiff uses the narrow corridors to maximize the weapon’s control magic. The player roleplays stepping into a corridor of rioting inmates, invoking Aura of Gevurah to intimidate the crowd into compliance. If prisoners refuse to step back, the bailiff strikes with Judicial Subjugation, delivering heavy non-lethal blows that force the rowdiest prisoners to their knees under invisible spiritual pressure.
- Defensive Roleplay: If an inmate attempts a surprise grapple or ambush from the shadows of a lockup, the bailiff turns the attack against them. The player roleplays absorbing the initial blow with the reinforced brass caps, using Preservative Weight to counter with a subduing strike. The bailiff then activates Order in the Court, emitting a localized pulse of blue energy that pushes back additional ambushers and grants nearby guards a protective boost until reinforcements arrive.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective
- Sight: The dark ebony shaft becomes traced with an illuminated, flowing silver pathway mapping the Tree of Life. The eighteen lapis lazuli stones embedded along the handle ignite with a brilliant sapphire blue light that pulses in unison with the wielder’s heartbeat. When issuing a judicial command, a circular pulse of translucent blue energy expands outward from the baton.
- Hearing: A deep, resonant, harmonic chime—resembling a massive distant cathedral bell—echoes through the mind upon activation. While holding the baton, the wielder’s voice acquires a booming, stern resonance that cuts clearly through loud crowds or structural noise.
- Touch: The black leather grip grows intensely cold to the touch, while the heavy brass caps become noticeably warm. A heavy, steady vibration hums through the handle, reinforcing the physical weight and balance of the weapon.
- Smell: A sharp, clean aroma of fresh parchment, ozone, and old, polished brass fills the wielder’s nostrils, sharply cutting through ambient environmental odors.
- Taste: A distinct metallic and slightly salty taste, similar to touching a clean copper coin, touches the back of the tongue.
- Extra-Sensory Perception: Through the Mind’s Eye, the wielder perceives a translucent blue grid mapping the spiritual framework of Gevurah over all nearby disorderly or hostile entities, instantly highlighting vulnerable points for a non-lethal strike. When a command is spoken, invisible silver “threads of decree” are seen extending from the baton, wrapping around the targets’ limbs.
- Observer’s Perspective
- Sight: Onlookers witness the dark ebony wood ignite with flowing blue energy along its silver filigree. The eighteen lapis lazuli gems flash with bright sapphire light. Upon slamming the pommel, a visual shockwave of pale blue energy sweeps across the floor, and coiling silver bands of light manifest around the feet of targeted suspects.
- Hearing: Bystanders hear the wielder’s voice amplified with a heavy, commanding echo, accompanied by a deep physical bass frequency that vibrates through the floor and chest cavity when the brass pommel strikes a surface.
- Touch: Those standing within 15 feet feel a localized drop in ambient temperature and a faint anti-static pull on their hair and clothing as the shockwave passes over them.
- Smell: Observers catch a sudden wave of crisp ozone and dry paper scent, replacing local smells of mud, sweat, or decay.
- Taste: Highly sensitive individuals standing in close proximity experience a momentary dry, copper-like metallic tang on their tongue.
- Extra-Sensory Perception: Magic-wielding observers or those using True Sight perceive a dense aura of divine Gevurah (Judgment and Constraint) surging around the wielder and the baton, radiating brightest from the eighteen gems and brass caps as spectral silver threads bind the target’s movement.
- Positives
- Provides complete assurance that judicial decrees carry immediate physical and spiritual weight, making crowd suppression and suspect apprehension highly effective.
- Guarantees that all weapon strikes are inherently non-lethal, preventing accidental deaths during delicate arrests or riot control operations.
- The Voice of the Court effect ensures that commands can be heard with absolute clarity across noisy public spaces or chaotic combat environments.
- Negatives
- The brilliant sapphire flare and loud command resonance eliminate all stealth potential, immediately broadcasting the wielder’s position to everyone nearby.
- The localized surge of ozone and anti-static energy can disrupt subtle divinatory spells or telepathic channels in the immediate area.
- Continuous active use of the binding magic leaves a lingering cold numbness in the wielder’s arm and a metallic taste in the mouth, requiring brief periods of rest after intense encounters.
Crafting Recipe: The Magistrate’s Baton
- Materials Needed
- Tier 1 Magic Crystal: Quantity of 1 (a dense, unblemished core crystal to regulate non-lethal kinetic channels).
- Dense Ebony Wood Blank: 1 block of seasoned, dark ebony wood (18 inches in length).
- Solid Brass Ingot: 1.5 pounds of brass (to be cast and turned for the pommel, top cap, and guard ring).
- Raw Silver Wire: 2 ounces of fine silver wire for the Sephirotic pathway filigree.
- Inlaid Lapis Lazuli Gems: Quantity of 18 matched, flat-cut lapis lazuli stones.
- Oil-Treated Black Leather: 1 long strip of supple, dark leather (for the handle grip wrap).
- Etching Acid & Legal Seal Stamp: Standard engraving acid and a hardened steel die bearing municipal court seals.
- Tools Required
- Woodworking Lathe & Carving Chisel Set: Precision tools for shaping, balancing, and channeling the ebony shaft.
- Jeweler’s Engraving Scribes & Chisels: Micro-tools for hand-carving the Tree of Life pathways and Hebrew binding scripts.
- Small Metal Smelting & Metal-Turning Lathe: For casting, turning, and polishing the brass caps and pommel seal.
- Gem-Setting Pliers & Bezel Burnishers: Specialty tools for mounting the eighteen lapis lazuli stones into brass sockets.
- Arcane Binding Workbench: A stabilized workstation equipped with spirit-channeling clamps to prevent magic bleeding during assembly.
- Skill Requirements
- Woodworking / Carpentry Skill: Level 4 or higher (required for turning and balancing the ebony shaft without splitting).
- Metalworking / Jewelry-Making Skill: Level 4 or higher (required for casting brass fittings and silver filigree inlay).
- Law or Intimidation Skill: Level 2 or higher (necessary to correctly channel and align the Gevurah binding formulas).
- Mind’s Eye Proficiency: Ability to actively view and direct non-lethal kinetic energy flows during assembly.
- Crafting Steps
- Step 1 – Turning and Channeling the Ebony Shaft: Mount the ebony blank onto the woodworking lathe. Turn and sand the wood to a smooth 18-inch cudgel profile. Carve a central interior chamber for the core crystal and fine recessed channels along the outer shaft for the silver filigree.
- Step 2 – Turning and Stamping the Brass Caps: Smelt the brass ingot and cast the top cap, guard ring, and heavy pommel. Turn the brass pieces on the metal lathe. Stamp the bottom face of the pommel with the municipal legal seal and engrave formulas of binding around its rim.
- Step 3 – Inlaying the Silver Pathways and Gem Sockets: Lay the fine silver wire into the carved channels along the ebony shaft, forming the ten Sephirotic nodes and twenty-two connecting paths. Drill and set eighteen precise socket beds into the handle and guard ring for the gems.
- Step 4 – Mounting the Core Crystal and Assembly: Insert the Tier 1 Magic Crystal into the ebony shaft’s interior chamber. Fit the top brass cap and bottom brass pommel onto the wooden shaft, securing them with brass pins and sealing the joints.
- Step 5 – Setting the Lapis Lazuli Stones: Carefully press the eighteen flat-cut lapis lazuli gems into their prepared sockets along the handle and guard ring. Use the bezel burnisher to crimp the brass rims securely over each stone.
- Step 6 – Wrapping the Leather Grip: Tightly wrap the oil-treated black leather strip around the handle section between the guard ring and pommel, securing the ends with flush brass tacks to ensure a firm, non-slip hold.
- Step 7 – Consecration of Judicial Order: Secure the completed baton onto the arcane binding workbench. Activate your Mind’s Eye and speak an oath of judicial decree over the weapon. Strike the brass pommel against the bench surface to test the circuit—the silver pathways will ignite with blue energy, the lapis lazuli gems will flash sapphire light, and the non-lethal binding conduits will lock into alignment.
Dark Stick and Eighteen Blue Stones of Judgment
In the very old years, when the high city-ship Saṃsāra was not yet sitting upon the broad waters, and the laws of men were written only upon wet mud bricks, there was a man named Bar-ak. He was not a king who wore a heavy gold wheel upon his head, nor was he a breaker of iron shields. He was a small judge-man who stood at the gate of the stone court, holding a long piece of paper made from dry grass.
In those far days, the people of the river town were very loud and did not hear the words of the magistrate. When a bad thief took the goats of a poor widow, or when a strong drunkard broke the clay jars of the oil merchant, the judge-man spoke with a quiet voice, but the people laughed at him. They threw old figs at his coat and pulled his grey beard, for his hand held no copper sword and his words were like the blowing of warm wind upon dry sand. The court-house became like a market of angry dogs, where the strong man struck the weak man with a wooden club, and no trial was made under the sun.
Bar-ak sat upon his stone bench and his spirit was very sad, like a broken pot in a ditch. He said in his heart: “The law is a good shirt, but if it hath no belt, it falleth into the dirt. How shall a small judge-man stop the angry crowd when he carries no iron spear to shed the blood of his brothers?”
When the moon became round like a silver plate, Bar-ak went up to the high hill of Gevurah, where the ancient stone pillars stood against the night sky. He knelt down upon the cold gravel and opened his hands to the high power that weighs the hearts of men upon the double scale. He called upon the spirit of the sixth circle, whom the old scrolls call the Judge of the Iron Hand. He said: “O Master of the Strict Line, my voice is thin like a dry reed. Give unto me a sign of power that shall make the proud man sit upon his knees, yet let no blood fall upon the clean stone of the court-house.”
The spirit of the high hill heard the small voice of the judge-man. A heavy wind came out of the dark trees, carrying a single branch of black wood that was heavy like iron and dark like the night without stars. It fell into the lap of Bar-ak with a loud sound. Beside the black wood lay eighteen small blue stones that looked like pieces of the high sky, and two round caps of yellow brass.
A voice came out from between the stone pillars, sounding like a heavy iron gate shutting upon a stone wall: “Take the black stick that cannot be bent by the hands of men. Shape it with thy knife until it is balanced in thy right fist. Wrap its middle in the skin of a black bull. Inlay the eighteen blue sky-stones along its spine in the order of the ten high paths. Cap its ends with the heavy brass, and stamp the seal of the decree upon its foot. When thou smitest the floor with this stick, the loud men shall become silent, and the feet of the runner shall be bound with invisible rope.”
Bar-ak took the black stick and the eighteen blue sky-stones down the hill to his small shop. For eighteen days and eighteen nights he sat beside his small oil lamp. He shaved the ebony wood until it was smooth like glass. He drew fine threads of silver wire out of an old cup and laid them into the black wood, making the twenty-two geometric paths of the high tree. He set the eighteen blue sky-stones into their brass beds, one by one, chanting the old words of judgment over each gem.
When the last brass cap was pinned to the heavy end, a cold blue light came out from the eighteen sky-stones, and the room became very cold, smelling of fresh ozone and the clean parchment of old books.
On the next morning, a great crowd of angry men broke into the stone court-house. A large thief named Yo-han, who had stolen twenty silver rings from the temple treasury, stood before the magistrate’s bench. He held a bronze dagger in his hand and spat upon the floor, shouting: “Who is this old man in the grass coat that tells me where my feet shall walk? I shall cut his throat and take his shoes!”
The people cheered with a loud noise, and the young men began to smash the clay oil jars against the stone walls.
Bar-ak stood up from his stone chair. He did not draw a copper sword, nor did he call for the iron spears of the king’s guard. He lifted the dark stick high above his head. The eighteen blue sky-stones flared with a bright sapphire fire that filled the dark room like the summer sun.
Bar-ak brought the heavy brass pommel down upon the stone table with a mighty blow.
BOOM.
A great wave of blue light erupted from the base of the dark stick, sweeping across the stone floor like a sea of cold glass. A sound like a giant brass bell echoed in the ears of every man, shaking the dust from the wooden rafters.
The large thief Yo-han dropped his bronze dagger, for his arms became heavy like wet lead. He tried to run toward the open door, but as he stepped forward, bands of spectral silver light wrapped around his ankles, pulling him down to his knees upon the cold flagstones. The angry crowd became instantly quiet, their mouths frozen open, unable to utter a single loud word against the bench.
Bar-ak spoke through the silence, and his voice sounded not like a small old man, but like a thundercloud rolling down from the high mountain: “Order is made in this house. The law shall speak, and no blood shall be shed upon the threshold.”
The thief Yo-han was bound with simple hemp ropes and taken to the stone prison without a single drop of blood falling upon his coat. From that day forward, whenever a man grew wild or unruly in the market or the court, Bar-ak walked into the crowd with the dark stick in his hand. He did not kill his brothers, nor did he break their bones with iron edges; he bound their feet with the blue light and brought them before the bench to answer for their deeds.
When Bar-ak grew very old and his eyes could no longer read the small writing upon the grass paper, he passed the dark stick to the chief bailiff of the city, saying: “Take this rod of Gevurah. Strike hard when the crowd is wild, but remember that its power is made to preserve the life of the suspect for the scale of justice, not to feed the anger of thy own heart.”
The old texts say that the stick was carried through many wars and burning cities until it came to the high halls of Saṃsāra, where its brass pommel still rings out when the peace of the court is broken.
Moral of the Story: True authority requires no blood to prove its power, for righteous law is enforced not by the cruelty of the blade, but by the firm and unyielding weight of order.
