Lore

Engineered by the early spatial void-farers of Saṃsāra who sought to cross the airless expanses between planetary spheres, this item was crafted to give novice travelers a stable foothold against the disorienting weightlessness of the cosmos. By etching ancient vocal Jumon runes into lightweight titanium-gold alloy bands and wrapping them around the ankles, void-farers learned to harmonize their physical mass with cosmic gravity vectors. Through rhythmic chanting, a Tier 1 astronautics avatar can ground themselves against crushing pressure changes, drift safely through zero-gravity environments, and anchor their spirit against the cold, echoing silence of the deep sky.

Description

This item consists of a pair of streamlined ankle cuffs forged from brushed titanium-gold alloy, lined on the interior with soft, heat-resistant seal-leather. The outer metal band is etched with fine, glowing cyan-hued Japanese kanji that form continuous Jumon verses of spatial orientation and inertial lock. At the outer hinge of each cuff sits a tiny, polished sphere of meteorite iron that hums with faint kinetic vibration. When an incantation is vocalized, the etched kanji pulse with vibrant cyan light, causing a soft, micro-gravitational field to wrap tightly around the wearer’s boots and feet, steadying their stance as if heavy iron pins were anchored into the floor.

Commerce and Acquisition of the Void Tether

In the world of Saṃsāra, trading in spatial equipment and gravity-anchoring gear like the Jumon 347 of the Void Tether takes place within launchport outfitters, void-farer guilds, and technological salvage markets. Because centralized commercial networks are absent, pricing and availability depend heavily on local orbital traffic, regional alloy smithing, and merchant factions.

Transactions strictly adhere to Saṃsāra’s traditional trade practices, where merchants set prices based on buyer tier and localized demand.

  • Launchport Outfitters and Star-Docks: Located in high-altitude orbital spires, airship docks, and void-vessel yards, these shops cater directly to astronauts, pilots, and spatial explorers. They stock calibrated void gear designed to withstand zero-gravity conditions. A Tier 1 avatar can buy the ankle cuffs here at their standard base price of 10 silver pieces (1 gold piece). Selling the cuffs back through standard World Bank processing nets the Tier 1 seller 9 silver pieces (reflecting the standard 10% tier-based transaction adjustment). Avatars affiliated with the Void-Farers League or Astro-Engineering Union receive a 10% faction discount per merchant tier, dropping the purchase price to 9 silver pieces.
  • Technological Salvage Depots and Forge Bazaars: Found in industrial quarters, foundry cities, and scrap markets, these vendors specialize in reclaimed titanium alloys and space-grade components. These depots sell the Jumon 347 for its base price of 10 silver pieces. Selling the item back through standard World Bank processing yields the Tier 1 seller 9 silver pieces.
  • Wandering Frontier Traders: Operating along remote launch routes and outer-rim outposts, these itinerant merchants carry essential survival and spatial anchoring gear to frontier explorers. Due to high transport risks and supply shortages, frontier vendors list the cuffs for 11 to 12 silver pieces. Selling the item to a frontier trader nets the standard 9 silver pieces via the World Bank system.
  • Black-Market Smuggler Dens and Sub-Level Fences: Situated in unregulated orbital stations, lawless port taverns, or subterranean dark-markets, these illicit vendors deal in untraced, salvaged, or stolen void gear. Smugglers operate entirely in physical coin, bypassing the World Bank system. Purchasing the cuffs from a smuggler costs 13 to 15 silver pieces in hard coin. However, if an avatar sells non-registered cuffs to a fence with a client desperate for un-traced zero-G gear, the fence may offer up to 17 silver pieces in physical coin on the spot.

Tactical Roleplay Applications: Gravitational Anchoring and Kinetic Repulsion

The Jumon 347 of the Void Tether acts as both an inertial spatial anchor and a reactive gravitational deflector, translating vocalized spiritual chants into real-time kinetic stability and localized shockwaves. How an avatar utilizes these ankle-slotted cuffs changes based on the surrounding environment, balancing zero-gravity maneuvering with reactive kinetic protection.

Zero-Gravity Orbital Stations and Decompressed Hulls

In airless vacuum chambers, outer ship hulls, or weightless space stations where traditional footing is nonexistent, spatial anchoring is vital for survival and combat positioning.

  • Defensive Usage: When targeted by incoming space debris or hostile projectiles while floating in zero-G, the avatar utters a sharp Jumon verse to activate Chanted Pulse of Repulsion. The meteorite iron spheres discharge a burst of gravitational force, creating a localized shockwave that pushes incoming kinetic rounds or drifting metal fragments away from the body, granting a +2 AC bonus.
  • Offensive Usage: In weightless environments, the avatar chants the Jumon Incantation of Zero-G Anchor, locking their gravity vector directly to the ceiling or hull plating. The player roleplays walking along vertical bulkheads at full speed to gain a superior vantage point, launching unexpected melee strikes or ranged fire against disoriented targets floating in the open void.

High-Altitude Airships and Precipitous Cliffs

On windy airship decks, open mountain ledges, or high-altitude launch towers where sudden gusts or environmental impacts risk throwing a traveler off the edge.

  • Defensive Usage: When struck by a heavy gust of wind or an enemy’s knockback ability while standing on a narrow airship railing, the passive Inertial Stance Alignment holds the avatar firmly in place. If an incoming physical blow threatens to break their balance, a quick reaction chant triggers Chanted Pulse of Repulsion, repelling the attacker’s weapon edge and stabilizing the avatar’s footing.
  • Offensive Usage: Engaging enemies on narrow walkways or high balconies, the avatar activates Jumon Incantation of Zero-G Anchor to run up nearby vertical support beams or cliff faces. The player roleplays leaping from elevated angles or using their anchored stance to pull heavy ropes or levers without being dragged by the counter-weight.

Subterranean Mines and Gravity-Distorted Ruins

Inside underground ruins, high-gravity chambers, or subterranean tunnels where artificial or magical gravity is unstable or fluctuating.

  • Defensive Usage: Navigating crumbling stone corridors or unstable mine shafts, the avatar relies on the passive Void-Step Buffer to dampen impact forces and land softly from sudden vertical drops. If falling debris or collapsing ceiling stone threatens to crush them, the avatar activates Chanted Pulse of Repulsion to blast the falling rubble sideways before impact.
  • Offensive Usage: In rooms affected by shifting gravity traps or slippery, uneven terrain, the avatar chants the zero-G anchor verse to firmly lock their boots to the ground. The player roleplays ignoring slick mud, grease spells, or inverted gravity tiles, allowing them to charge straight across hazardous terrain without falling prone to strike enemies who are struggling to maintain balance.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Sight: The etched Japanese kanji on the titanium-gold bands ignite with a intense cyan illumination, sending visible rings of light down toward the soles of the boots. The meteorite iron spheres glow at their cores, emitting micro-sparks of azure static electricity.
    • Sound: A sharp, metallic clack resonates through the feet as the cuffs lock in place, followed by a low, rhythmic humming like a far-off turbine or pressurized air vent sealing shut.
    • Touch: A sudden, heavy sensation grips the ankles, accompanied by a grounding downward pull that stabilizes the feet. Upon activating the repulsion shockwave, a crisp kinetic pop travels up the shins like a sharp recoil.
    • Smell: A distinct aroma of ionized air, ozone, and hot copper fills the nostrils, mixed with the faint scent of treated leather.
    • Taste: A sudden metallic, electric tang settles on the roof of the mouth, similar to standing near a high-voltage generator.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions: The user feels a subtle shift in their vestibular system, instantly perceiving the precise center of mass of nearby surfaces. They feel an intuitive “pull” connecting their soles to whatever surface they target, granting absolute spatial awareness of gravity vectors.
    • Positives: Eliminates fear of falling or drifting in zero-G, provides rock-solid physical stability against impacts, and instantly deflects incoming kinetic hazards.
    • Negatives: The sudden artificial shift in gravity vectors can cause brief inner-ear nausea or mild ankle stiffness immediately following activation.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Sight: Onlookers see the metal cuffs flash with bright cyan light as the incantation is spoken. When walking on walls or ceilings, the user appears to move with unnatural, magnetized ease. During defensive activation, a visible ripple of translucent blue force expands outward from the boots, knocking away debris or weapon tips.
    • Sound: Spectators hear the user’s vocalized Jumon verse, immediately followed by a heavy hum and a sudden pressure-pop that sounds like a pneumatic valve releasing.
    • Touch: Nearby individuals feel a slight thrumming vibration in the floor beneath their own feet and a sudden puff of pressurized air pushing outward from the user’s ankles.
    • Smell: Witnesses smell a brief burst of sharp, ozone-rich air radiating from the user’s boots.
    • Taste: Those standing within close proximity may detect a subtle, static-charged metallic taste in the air.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions: Spiritually or telepathically attuned observers feel a sudden “pinning” effect in the surrounding atmosphere, as if a heavy anchor has been dropped directly into the spatial fabric of the room.
    • Positives: Clearly signals that the user cannot be easily knocked down or displaced, providing visible tactical reassurance to allies.
    • Negatives: The bright cyan glow and loud kinetic discharge make stealth impossible during or immediately after activation.

Crafting Recipe: Jumon 347 Replica (Void Tether)

Materials Needed

  • Brushed Titanium-Gold Alloy Ingot: 2 bars (forged to form the dual metallic ankle cuff bands).
  • Polished Meteorite Iron Spheres: 4 small spheres (mounted at the hinges to serve as kinetic vibration conduits).
  • Heat-Resistant Seal-Leather: 1 square foot (used as interior padding to protect the ankles from kinetic shock).
  • Cyan Arcane-Conductive Inlay: 1 vial (a liquid luminescent compound composed of ground cyan crystal and copper powder).
  • Reinforced Hinge Fasteners: 2 sets (titanium pins used to secure the cuff latching mechanism).

Tools Required

  • Precision Engraving Chisel: Used to carve the fine Japanese kanji Jumon verses into the outer alloy bands.
  • High-Temp Metallurgy Forge: Calibrated for melting and shaping titanium-gold alloys without structural flaws.
  • Acoustic Tuning Fork (A-440): Used to set the resonant frequency of the meteorite iron spheres.
  • Leather-Working Awl & Silver Thread: For stitching and securing the inner seal-leather padding.
  • Calibrated Kinetic Anvil: A specialized anvil used to test the shock-absorption threshold of the finished cuffs.

Skill Requirements

  • Metalworking / Metallurgy Skill Level: Minimum Level 6 (Requires Skill Level 5 base + 1 additional level for Tier 1 spatial output).
  • Spatial Arcana / Astro-Engineering Skill Level: Minimum Level 6.

Crafting Steps

  1. Smelting and Shaping the Bands: Heat the titanium-gold alloy bars in the high-temp forge and hammer them over a curved mandrel to form two matching, hinged ankle cuffs.
  2. Engraving the Jumon Kanji: Using the precision engraving chisel, etch the continuous kanji verses of spatial orientation along the outer surface of both bands.
  3. Inlaying the Conductive Compound: Fill the etched kanji channels with the cyan arcane-conductive inlay, then heat-cure the bands to set the luminescent material flush with the metal.
  4. Mounting the Meteorite Iron Spheres: Fit two polished meteorite iron spheres into the outer hinge housing of each cuff. Strike the acoustic tuning fork and hold it against the metal to harmonize the spheres with kinetic vibrations.
  5. Fitting the Leather Interior: Cut the heat-resistant seal-leather to size, puncture stitch-holes with the awl, and line the inside of each cuff using silver thread to cushion against impact recoil.
  6. Gravitational Calibration: Place the completed cuffs on the kinetic anvil while reciting the Jumon 347 incantation for three minutes, permanently binding the vocal frequency to the kinetic shockwave mechanism.

Iron Ankle-Rings and Great Void-Ship

In the days when the sky was still a hard roof made of dark glass, and the ocean of Saṃsāra was only three leagues wide, there lived a low worker of metal whose mark upon the clay is called the Boy-Who-Fixes-Iron.

He was a person of small standing, a Tier 1 foot-wanderer who had come out of the cold dust-country where men had no big sun and lived inside giant iron boxes that floated in the high air. He possessed no brass armor, nor did he hold the golden keys of the tower-captains. His shoes were made of rotten rope, and his head was filled with seven songs about the cold void.

In those old times, when the big ships went up into the empty air where there is no dirt to stand upon, the sailors would lose their feet from the floor. They would float up like dry leaves in a chimney, bumping their heads against the iron beams and crying out to their mothers because they could not push themselves down. When the ships did jump across the black sky-river, many foolish men were thrown against the walls like dropped melons, breaking their leg-bones and falling into the dark void-holes.

The Boy-Who-Fixes-Iron sat upon an old iron box for forty days, holding in his right hand two heavy rings of cooked gold-metal and titanium that had been pulled out of a dead sky-ship’s belly. He spoke into his own toes, as the ancient clay poorly recorded: “Why must the sky-man fly like an angry fly whenever the floor-iron stops pulling his boots? A sailor who cannot plant his heels upon the deck is a fish trying to pull a wagon.”

On the forty-first night, when the cold sky-wind was whistling through the copper pipes, a chanting elder of the Jumon-keepers came down the ladder. He was a master of the throat-words—the old incantations that make heavy iron feel light and cause the static-fire to run along the metal bands. He carried in his pocket two little round stones made of black sky-iron that had fallen out of a shooting star.

When the elder began to sing his Jumon into the gold-metal rings, the titanium grew warm like a hot kettle. The black star-stones began to shake and hum like trapped bees inside a wooden jar. The Boy-Who-Fixes-Iron felt his knees grow heavy and firm, as if two big stone posts had been driven through his feet into the deep floor-clay.

“Lo,” said the Boy-Who-Fixes-Iron, in the fractured translation of the broken slate, “the vocal-words of the Jumon are heavy lead weights that tie a floating man back to his father’s house!”

For four long cold seasons, the boy and the Jumon-keeper worked inside the engine-belly of a broken sky-ship where the oil drips. They took the gold-titanium bands and lined the inside with the soft skin of water-beasts to keep the ankles from bleeding. Then, using a small steel needle, they carved crooked bird-letters and Japanese Jumon words into the metal face, filling the lines with blue spark-dust that shone like the eye of a fish.

They mounted the black star-stones upon the outer hinges with small brass pins, naming the work Jumon 347, though the low sky-sailors called it The Iron Foot-Clamps of the Falling Sky.

The great test of the foot-rings came during the Season of the Ripped Hull, when a big sky-monster made of black iron struck the side of the great void-ship Sovereign-of-the-Upper-Dust. A great hole was bitten into the iron wall, and all the breath-air began to rush out into the empty void with a loud screaming sound like a stuck pig.

The floor-gravity died instantly, and forty sailors floated up toward the dark hole, waving their arms like drowning frogs.

The Boy-Who-Fixes-Iron strapped the dual metal rings around his boots. He did not grab the wall-ropes, nor did he hook his belt to the iron posts. He stood upon the smooth ceiling, held his knees tight, and vocalized the strong Jumon of the Zero-G Anchor, as the elder had taught his ears.

The ancient translation records the great miracle with strange and clumsy phrases:

“The blue bird-letters upon the leg-rings did burst into bright cyan fire! A noise like a heavy iron door slamming did come out of the boy’s heels! The floor-clay did grab his rope-shoes with ten thousand tiny fingers! He did walk upside down across the ceiling-iron as if he were an ant crawling upon a bread-loaf, carrying three heavy iron plates upon his back!”

The Boy-Who-Fixes-Iron walked straight into the screaming wind hole, his feet glued fast to the ceiling-beams. When a great piece of flying ship-junk came spinning through the dark to cut off his head, he let out a sharp, single-word Jumon shout.

“A great blue wind did pop out from his ankles!” the ancient slate continues. “The flying ship-junk was struck by the foot-force and did bounce away into the void like a thrown stone! His leg-bones did not break, and his toes remained fastened to the sky-iron!”

Using his heavy hammers, he riveted the iron plates over the hole, stopping the wind-leak and saving the thirty-nine floating sailors who had been caught in the net-ropes.

The ship-captain gave the Boy-Who-Fixes-Iron ten sacks of dried meat and three brass compasses. In the years that followed, the forge-masters of the orbital yards made many copies of the titanium ankle-cuffs, so that even the most inexperienced Tier 1 void-farers might walk across the ceilings of the star-ships without falling into the endless void.

Moral of the Story: He who anchors his feet with ancient wisdom remains standing when the very floor beneath him falls away.
