Symbol 4 of the Weeping Wound

Lore: Whispers speak of an ancient battlefield steeped in such potent anguish and dark energies that the land itself festered. A gaping ‘wound’ in reality persists there, leaking unnatural vapors and grotesque half-formed visions. Some sages view it as a cosmic mistake, others a malevolent scar left by entities now-forgotten.

Graphic Appearance: An open gash, not simply a depiction of injury, but stylized to hold the unsettling beauty of something both wrong and mesmerizing. Perhaps jagged lines suggest pain, or shimmering liquid represents the ever-weeping ‘wound’ in the world.

Ideas Represented:  Morbidity, fascination with transgression, the allure of the forbidden, a nihilistic view of existence.

Concept of Symbol: This symbol isn’t merely about horror, but the pull of that which disrupts natural order. Power in the profane.

Type of Symbol:  This is a symbol of defiance, but not always overt rebellion. It could be a silent statement of worldview or a mark of secret societies.

Motivation: Individuals drawn to this symbol see something others flinch from. Maybe they’ve endured trauma, harbor cynicism about the world, or seek knowledge at any cost – believing understanding even the darkest corners grants greater power.

Use: Often concealed. Perhaps tattooed beneath layers of robes, etched into hidden corners of gear, or woven in dark thread upon black cloth.

Positives: Potential for intimidating presence or gaining wary respect in factions that value raw power or taboo knowledge.  The audacity of the symbol could aid some deception checks.

Negatives: Wearing the Weeping Wound openly will evoke suspicion or outright hostility from those who favor order and life-affirming forces. Its bleak philosophy could erode positive emotions and social bonds.

Ballad of the Carrion Prophet

In the time before memory, on that battlefield where only crows fattened, they say there walked a figure wreathed in shadows not his own. Some called him fool, others damned, most simply flinched and spat a prayer that went unanswered. For this man knelt where blood had pooled black as midnight, drank of its foulness, and traced in that muck a glyph no living eye should be forced to bear.

The Wound itself, they say, wept – tears of ichor or scorn, none can agree. And yet, in those tears the man saw visions. Chaos given shape, not of battles past, but a twisted symphony yet to be played. Madness bloomed beneath his skull, so the tales claim, but power too – the gift of prophecy plucked from the heart of despair.  They named him Carrion Prophet, and that which marked him became the Weeping Wound.

And what of those who now score flesh and soul with this sign? Some are scavengers, picking carrion clean long after the crows are sated. They scrawl it on the walls of empires with the blood of kings, or whisper its meaning to orphans left in war’s wake.  Others… they bear it upon an inner eye alone, turning not outwards but inwards to dissect the rot in their own hearts.

Moral of the story: There is truth in darkness, for only one who stares long into the abyss knows its true contours. But tread warily, for sometimes the abyss stares back, and changes what it finds.

Suggested conversions to other systems:

Call of Cthulhu

  • Lore & Sanity Risk:
    • Deep lore: Bearing the symbol grants access to disturbing forbidden knowledge about the Mythos. The deeper you look, the higher the Sanity cost, but also the likelihood of gaining potent clues others are blind to.
    • Madness Flair: Investigators bearing the Weeping Wound can make sanity checks slightly easier against ‘otherworldly’ or horrifying threats. But they risk seeing unsettling visions or gaining obsessive, bleak compulsions.

Blades in the Dark

  • Secret Society Signifier: The symbol fits hidden cults trafficking in prophecy or leveraging despair as a weapon against empires.
    • Action Advantage: Grants bonuses to gather information in the underworld about macabre happenings, forbidden lore, or the movements of enemies fueled by destructive philosophies.
    • Downside: The mark evokes visceral hatred amongst factions like the Spirit Wardens or those upholding faith. Detection could mean severe consequences or a desperate turf war.

Dungeons & Dragons

  • Warlock Patron or Cursed Item: The symbol connects to power with a dire cost.
    • Warlock Patron: An entity tied to decay, prophecy, or even undeath may offer this sigil as their mark. Grants potent but disturbing spells (necromancy, inflicting potent despair effects), but risks permanent corruption the more they draw upon these powers.
    • Cursed Item: An amulet or similar artifact enhances Divination spells and allows seeing ‘auras’ of ill intent or death around locations. However, it compels the bearer towards destructive acts and drains life energy gradually.

Knave

  • Thematic & Dangerous Trait: This isn’t about stat bonuses, but stark character themes.
    • “Marked by the Weeping Wound”: They automatically succeed on rolls about predicting bleak outcomes, finding the corrupt underbelly of the world, or intimidating with an oppressive aura. They suffer disadvantages to resist being corrupted by their insight and struggle to perform altruistic acts without self-serving motive.

Fate

  • Compelling Aspect: “Marked by the Weeping Wound” is a potent double-edged Aspect.
    • Invoke: Gain bonuses to noticing hidden patterns, unraveling disturbing truths, or striking fear with their grim insights. Perfect for dark prophecies, interrogation, or unsettling those relying on comforting lies.
    • Compels: This symbol draws all sorts of unwanted attention from those fearful of its nihilistic power. Can twist scenes to include bleak visions, sudden tests of mental fortitude to avoid despair, or a compulsion to act cruelly when kindness might be the wiser path.

Numenera & Cypher System

  • Cypher or Mind Focus: Both avenues fit its association with unsettling knowledge and potential psychic impact.
    • Cypher: A one-use injector-like item found among ancient battlefield ruins. Temporarily hyper-sensitizes the user’s perception of negative emotional energy and decay. Useful for finding weaknesses, hidden horrors, but induces paranoia and nausea as a side effect.
    • Mind Enhancement: An unsettling shard or tattoo permanently amplifies a ‘sixth sense’ about ill intent, but makes positive social interactions challenging and may cause disturbing premonitions about those the user is close to.

Pathfinder

  • Oracle Curse or Antipaladin Focus: Leans into the idea of drawing power from a bleak view of existence.
    • Oracle Curse: “Voice of the Wound” curse grants bonuses on Intimidation and Knowledge checks focused on death, decay, and manipulation. However, healing magic used on them has decreased effect and they face mistrust from others due to their unsettling aura.
    • Antipaladin Variant: This symbol could resonate with an antipaladin serving a deity of decay or entropy. Grants access to spells of despair and necromancy but weakens them while in sunlight and holy grounds.

Savage Worlds

  • Edge & Hindrance Combo: The Weeping Wound’s essence aligns with Savage Worlds’ potent but volatile mechanics.
    • Edge: “Dark Sight” grants a Benny to Notice checks tied to finding decay, spotting malicious intent, or seeing ‘supernatural echoes’ of past violence. The user may trigger…
    • Hindrance (Major): “Haunted by Despair”. Can inflict potent mental Shaken states based on disturbing glimpses and premonitions. They also gain a “Mean” demeanor due to a bleak world view, impacting social rolls.

Shadowrun

  • Awakened Affiliation: This symbol holds both power and danger for various magical traditions.
    • Totem/Mentor Spirit: It could tie into a particularly dark patron like a tormented nature spirit from a corrupted blight zone, or an embodiment of urban decay. Grants increased dice pools for manipulation magic, summoning unsettling entities, or astral perception into blighted areas.
    • Black Magicians: A symbol scrawled in rituals by those pursuing power-at-any-cost. Provides bonuses to some forbidden rituals but brings the negative attention of those protecting the balance, especially astral law enforcement.

Starfinder

  • Psionic Corruption or Tech Virus: In Starfinder, the focus could be on mental ability or the ‘digital decay’ of hyper-advanced societies.
    • Psionic Discipline: Characters with psionic potential (solarians, mystics) tempted by forbidden lore could access a new discipline tied to ‘entropic insight’. This lets them see weak points, sense despair, etc., but increases risks of mental strain/burnout when used frequently.
    • Outlaw Tech: A nano-virus or rogue protocol corrupting AIs could carry this symbol. When a technomancer hacks an infected system, they get temporary insight bonuses at the risk of ‘psychic backlash’ if they push too deep.

Traveller

  • Social Rep & Forbidden Lore: In Traveller’s less fantastical realm, the symbol carries weight as a dangerous social signifier.
    • Outcast Mark: Individuals branded (willingly or by force) with the Weeping Wound are feared – those marked by nihilism or association with outlaw psionic cults. This offers advantages when infiltrating such groups, but brings stigma upon those with a conscience.
    • Occult Text Cipher: The symbol might not grant abilities outright, but is part of decoding ancient, dangerous knowledge texts about lost psionic civilizations or perhaps alien artifacts that induce bleak awareness.

Warhammer (Fantasy or 40k)

  • Mark of Heretics and Psykers: The Weeping Wound evokes the dangerous edge of manipulating warp-touched elements.
    • WH Fantasy: Sign of those consorting with Tzeentch cults, mutated prophets, or hedge wizards driven mad by forbidden lore. Grants minor bonuses to corrupting or illusion-oriented magics but amplifies paranoia and the lure of Chaos.
    • WH 40k: Used by unsanctioned psykers teetering on the brink of possession, or radical inquisitors who’ve peered too long into the abyss. Enhances Warp-sense for precognition or detecting taint, but risks mental degradation each time it’s tapped.
