Lore
The Shattered Bastion is a mantle forged from iron-thread and the scorched leather of beasts that died fighting their restraints. In the realm of Saṃsāra, this gear is favored by avatars who view a “Gilded Cage” not as a puzzle to be solved, but as a personal insult to be obliterated. It embodies the aggressive roleplay emphasis, channeling the wearer’s fury into a tangible force that unravels magical bonds through sheer kinetic and arcane pressure. Common among Tier 1 frontline vanguards, this item is a testament to the belief that true liberation is often won through the violent displacement of one’s captors.
Detailed Stats
- Slot: Shoulder Slot
- Tier: 1
- Rarity: Common
- Armor Points: 2
- Item Health Points: 40
- Weight: 4 lbs
Skills Gained While Openly Worn
- Breaker’s Intuition: While moving toward a locked door, cage, or restrained creature, the avatar gains +1 to Athletics and Intimidation.
- Siege Sight: The wearer can instinctively identify the single weakest structural point in any physical barrier.
Passive Magic
- Aura of the Unbound: Feral beasts and low-level constructs feel an overwhelming sense of predatory aggression from the wearer, granting a 10% chance they will flee rather than engage if the wearer is moving toward them.
- Forceful Presence: The “Mind’s Eye” of the wearer projects a localized field that reduces the weight of their carried weapons by 15%, allowing for faster offensive transitions.
- Shatter-Resonance: When the wearer takes physical damage, the mantle pulses with dark ultraviolet light, storing a portion of the impact to empower the next attempt to break a physical object.
Active Magic
- Gilded Glance (Normal Chant): The avatar unleashes a loud, mocking laugh or shout of praise toward a restraint’s “impending ruin”. For the next 6 seconds, any physical strike against that restraint deals double damage to its structural integrity.
- Breath of the Open Sky (Silent Chant): A brief, silent intake of breath triggers a burst of speed. The avatar lunges forward 15 feet in a straight line; if this movement ends at a barrier or cage, the avatar can make an immediate attempt to break it as a free action.
- Ritual of the Crossroads (Ritual Chant): Over 6 seconds of rhythmic chanting, the mantle’s copper circuits burn white-hot. The avatar slams their fist against the ground, revealing all hidden magical traps and invisible wards within a 15-foot radius by causing them to spark violently.

Tactical Roleplay of the Uncaged 842 in Diverse Environments
The Uncaged 842 of the Shattered Bastion dictates a highly active and assertive roleplay style, with its effectiveness and narrative impact shifting based on the environmental safety rating.
Roleplay in Designated Safe Areas
- In guarded strongholds or monarchical rooms, the mantle’s Armor Points are tripled.
- The avatar roleplays this by projecting an aura of restrained violence, standing as a physical wall that seems to pulse with the stored potential of “Shatter-Resonance”.
- The character narrates a sense of total physical dominance, where the heavy iron-thread of the mantle feels impervious to any minor local disturbance.
Roleplay in Somewhat Safe Areas
- In large cities or established towns, the Armor Points are doubled.
- Roleplay focuses on “Forceful Presence,” where the avatar moves through streets with a heavy, purposeful gait that demands space.
- The player narrates how the “Mind’s Eye” keeps their weapons feeling weightless and ready for a sudden offensive transition if the city’s peace should fail.
Roleplay in Normal Areas
- In the general wilderness, jungles, or backwoods, the Armor Points remain at the base value of 2.
- The avatar utilizes the “Aura of the Unbound,” roleplaying an aggressive forward march that causes feral beasts to slink away in fear of the wearer’s predatory energy.
- The character narrates their “Siege Sight,” pointing out structural flaws in the surrounding natural environment, such as a rotted tree or a loose cliff face, to use as tactical advantages.
Roleplay in Unsafe and Deathly Areas
- In unsafe areas, Armor Points are halved; in deathly areas, they are removed, and all enemy attacks hit automatically.
- Roleplay shifts to a desperate offensive: the avatar narrates the “Breath of the Open Sky” silent lunge as a way to crash through barriers before the environment itself can swallow them.
- The character roleplays the mantle’s iron-thread glowing white-hot and sparking violently, signaling that the “aggressive” magic is being pushed to its absolute limit to survive a hostile realm.
Offensive Roleplay: Breaching and Revelations
- Offensive roleplay centers on the “Breaker’s Intuition,” where the character narratively describes the thrill of closing the distance toward a cage or lock.
- When using “Gilded Glance,” the avatar roleplays a booming laugh or a mockingly loud shout, narrating how their strike against a restraint hits with double the intended force.
- The player roleplays the “Ritual of the Crossroads” by slamming their fist into the earth, narratively describing the satisfying sight of hidden magical traps sparking and failing under the mantle’s aggressive pressure.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective
- The user immediately feels a powerful, surging rush of localized kinetic energy centering on their shoulder blades, rapidly spreading into the arms.
- This physical sensation is coupled with an intensified, sharp mental focus (Mind’s Eye) that instantly clarifies the surrounding environment into distinct targets and optimal paths for breaching.
- Extra-sensory feedback reveals invisible energy fields, magical wards, and the structural integrity of objects within a 15-foot radius as violent, sputtering sparks.
- A resonant, low-frequency hum vibrates through the user’s bone structure, enhancing physical confidence and aggressive intent.
- Observer’s Perspective
- The Uncaged 842 visibly activates: fine, jagged streams of dark ultraviolet and white-hot arcane energy erupt along the seams of the iron-thread weaving.
- The scorched leather panels seem to briefly smoke as the stored “Shatter-Resonance” is initialized.
- Observers close to the user may feel a sudden, static prickle on their skin and notice dust being violently displaced around the user’s feet by the localized kinetic aura.
- A powerful, intimidating odor of ozone and scorched metal becomes instantly prevalent.
- Positives
- The user gains immediate, accurate, visual and tactile data regarding the vulnerabilities of any physical or magical barrier.
- This sensory clarity facilitates decisive action, converting intellectual recognition into instant physical execution.
- The activated mantle acts as a strong narrative anchor for the aggressive roleplay, justifying feats of sudden and violent disruption.
- Negatives
- The dramatic visual and olfactory display (ultraviolet light, ozone scent) immediately alerts all entities within a large radius to the user’s presence and aggressive state, making stealth impossible while active.
- The internal sensory feedback of high-tension kinetic energy is physically exhausting; maintaining activation for prolonged periods may lead to significant fatigue or muscle strain.
- The intensely high-contrast visual display may cause temporary sensory overload or difficulty distinguishing nuanced environmental details outside the target area.
Recipe for the Uncaged 842 of the Shattered Bastion
- Materials Needed
- Iron-thread Spools: High-tensile metallic thread used for weaving the structural base of the mantle.
- Scorched Leather: Hide harvested from beasts that perished while struggling against restraints.
- Copper Circuitry Strips: Conductive strips used to channel the kinetic and arcane pressure of the Mind’s Eye.
- Dark Ultraviolet Focus Crystals: Crystalline nodes that store and release “Shatter-Resonance” energy.
- Hardened Solder: Arcane-reactive bonding agent used to secure the metal components to the leather.
- Tools Required
- Industrial Steam-Press: A heavy-duty machine used to fuse the iron-thread and leather under extreme pressure.
- Precision Solder Pen: A fine-tipped tool for intricate circuit work and crystal mounting.
- Etching Stylus: Used for carving the jagged resonant patterns into the iron-thread seams.
- Soul-Forge Bellows: Used to maintain the heat required to temper the iron-thread components.
- Skill Requirements
- Tier 1 Smithing: Proficiency in handling iron-thread and metallic weaving.
- Magical Crafting (Aggressive Emphasis): The ability to imbue gear with offensive kinetic energy and predatory auras.
- Mind’s Eye Literacy: Essential for tuning the circuits to reveal structural vulnerabilities and hidden wards.
- Leatherworking: Expertise in treating scorched hides to maintain flexibility under high-tension loads.
- Crafting Steps
- Base Construction: Layer the iron-thread over the scorched leather and utilize the industrial steam-press to create a unified, 4 lb shoulder-piece.
- Circuit Etching: Use the etching stylus to map the jagged copper pathways that will facilitate the “Forceful Presence” passive.
- Crystal Seating: Mount the dark ultraviolet focus crystals at the primary junctions of the copper circuitry using the precision solder pen.
- Aggression Infusion: Perform the “Gilded Glance” and “Breath of the Open Sky” chants while the circuits are white-hot to anchor the active magics.
- Resonance Calibration: Calibrate the “Shatter-Resonance” by subjecting the mantle to controlled physical impacts, ensuring it stores energy correctly.
- Final Tempering: Perform the “Ritual of the Crossroads” to finalize the link between the wearer’s Mind’s Eye and the item’s offensive sensors.
Un-Boxed 842 Smashed Safe-House
In the before-before times, when the Great Dirt-Rock was still crying hot red mud, there were men of the walking-meat who liked to sit on high chairs. These men called themselves the Kings of the Shiny Hugs. The Kings of the Shiny Hugs did not like the running-around of the pure magic. They said, “The pure magic is too fast. We must put it in a metal-trap of gold. A metal-trap of gold is a very nice hug for the magic.” So, the Kings built many shiny yellow boxes. They called these boxes the Gilded Cages.
But there was a meat-vessel named Grak the Much-Angry. Grak the Much-Angry did not like the shiny yellow boxes. Grak looked at a cage and felt a sickness of the brain-meat. Grak said, “A hug of metal is not a hug. It is a choking of the life-breath. I will be the Big-Hitter of the boxes.”
Grak walked into the places where the ground is sharp and the air is burning. Grak looked for the feral-flesh beasts that the Kings tried to put in the shiny boxes. Grak found the bones of the beasts who died biting their iron-vines. The beasts bit the iron-vines until their teeth-stones became dust, and their skin became black from the fire of their own hate. Grak took the burnt-skin of the angry beasts. Then, Grak found the hard-dirt strings, the iron-thread, pulled from the belly of the deep-rock spiders.
Grak took the burnt-skin and the iron-thread to a place of heavy-hitting. Grak used a loud steam-crusher to push the iron-thread into the burnt-skin. It was a very hard pushing. Grak laid the red dirt-metal, the copper, upon the skin. Grak did not make smooth lines. Grak made jagged lines like the angry lightning-scratches in the sky-water. At the crossing of the red dirt-metal, Grak pushed the dark-purple un-light-rocks. Grak yelled the loud words of the Smashed Safe-House. The rocks drank the yell and became hungry for breaking. This thing became the Un-Boxed Eight Hundreds and Four-Tens-Two. Grak put it on the joining-places of the arm-bones and the head-bone.
Immediately, Grak felt the heavy pushing-hardness inside the chest-cage. The seeing-grape inside Grak’s brain-meat opened wide. It was the Inside-Looker, the Mind’s Eye. Grak looked at the heavy hitting-sticks in the hand-meat. Because of the Forceful Presence, the hitting-sticks felt light like the feathers of a sky-flapper. Grak started the heavy-stepping toward the biggest shiny yellow box.
The biggest box was called the Bastion of Not-Leaving. It was a very large Safe-House made of the false sun-metal. The Kings of the Shiny Hugs put many people of the pure magic inside the Bastion.
As Grak did the heavy-stepping, the feral-flesh of the woods saw Grak. The feral-flesh felt the Aura of the Unbound. The feral-flesh smelled the predatory aggression, the much-angry smell of the burnt-skin. The feral-flesh said to their own brain-meat, “That walking-meat is a walking-disaster. We will run away.” And they ran.
Grak stood before the Bastion of Not-Leaving. Grak used the Siege-Look. The seeing-grape of the brain-meat looked past the shiny gold. The seeing-grape saw the unseen strings of the magic. The seeing-grape saw the one brick of dirt that was crying. It was the weak point. Grak knew the structural failing-place.
The magic-guards of the Kings stood on the big-wall. They pointed their sharp-sticks at Grak. Grak did not care. Grak did the Breath of the Open Sky. Grak did a silent mouth-suck. Suddenly, Grak was not standing. Grak was flying like a thrown stone, moving fifteen feet in the time of a single eye-blink. Grak hit the crying brick. The dark-purple un-light-rocks of the mantle drank the hitting-force. This was the Shatter-Resonance. The mantle stored the hurting.
Then, Grak looked at the great lock of the shiny box. Grak did the Gilded Glance. Grak opened the face-hole and made a very loud, mocking belly-roar. Grak yelled, “Your shiny lock is a piece of bad dirt! I praise your coming breaking! You are a joke of the Kings!” The lock felt the heavy-wind of the insult. The magic of the lock became sad and brittle. Grak hit the lock with the hitting-stick. Because of the loud mocking, the hitting-stick gave two-times the hurting to the metal. The lock cried a loud metal-cry and cracked.
But the Kings had put sneaky unseen-strings on the ground. Invisible traps of the weird-force. Grak felt the sneaky magic trying to grab the foot-meat. Grak stood in the middle of the dirt and did the Ritual of the Crossing-Paths. Grak sang the rhythmic angry-chant for six beats of the blood-pumper. The red dirt-metal on the shoulder-hide burned white-hot like the noon-sun. Grak lifted the hand-meat and slammed it down upon the Great Dirt-Rock with all the anger of the burnt beasts.
The dark-purple light sprayed out in a big circle of fifteen feet. The sneaky unseen-strings of the magic-guards sparked violently. They sizzled like fat in the fire and died. The traps were broken. The Bastion of Not-Leaving was now the Bastion of Much-Leaving. The big-wall fell down in many heavy pieces.
The pure magic people ran out of the broken box. They ran into the Far-Away Sky-Line. Grak the Much-Angry watched them run. Grak’s brain-meat felt a good quietness, but the shoulder-hide still hummed with the kinetic angry-wind. Grak knew there were more shiny boxes to smash. Grak kept walking. The people of the old time remembered the Smashed Safe-House, and they knew that the heavy iron-thread is the only answer to the false gold.
The moral of the story: A cage of shiny yellow metal is still a bad trap for the soul, and the best way to open a cage is not to find a key, but to shatter the face of the cage with the heavy anger of the unbound beast.
