These people lived not on land or water, but in-between, where the shadows of the great jungle trees swallowed the sun, and the beasts spoke in whispers. Among these wise ones was a sacred thing—a gift handed down by the Old Serpents, older than time itself—the Armguards of Vanishing, made from the skin of the Great Color-Shifting Serpent, whose name was lost in wind and dust.

The Keepers were said to know the secret of silence, of unseen movement through the places where life and death meet. They wore the armguards not as simple armor but as a sign of their bond with the crawling ones—the snakes, the chameleons, and the hidden things. Legends say these armguards had the power to make the wearer vanish before the eyes of both man and beast. When the Keepers walked among the shadows, they were not seen, for the scales of the serpent-shifters turned them into part of the world.

But one day, a young Keeper, proud and full of desire, sought to use the armguards not for guarding the temples but for conquest. He thought, “With these on my arms, none will see me, and all will fear my strike.” And so, he set out into the lands where the serpents had no dominion, where men ruled with iron and fire. He wore the armguards and walked unseen, taking what he wished and conquering with ease.

For a time, the armguards obeyed their wearer, turning him to shadow and air. But the Old Serpents do not forget those who break the ancient bond. The more the young Keeper used their power for his own greed, the more the scales turned against him. One day, as he slipped into a rich city to take its gold, the armguards began to burn. The colors no longer shifted to protect him; instead, they gleamed bright as fire, and all saw him as he was—a thief wearing the sacred gift of the jungle.

The city rose against him, for his invisibility was now gone. He tried to flee, but the armguards weighed heavy on him, like the stones of the earth. He was caught and taken to the mountains, where he disappeared—some say into the deep places where the Keepers sent those who broke the old ways.

The armguards were lost, but the story remained, told in broken tongues and whispers of the wind, reminding all of the balance between power and nature.

Moral of the Story: The gifts of the old ones are not meant for those who seek only gain. Power over nature belongs to those who protect, not those who plunder, for in the end, nature will reclaim what was always hers.
