Sufism 38 of the Chiseled Word

Lore

Across the jagged river canyons and wind-sculpted granite terraces of Saṃsāra, stone is understood not as inert deadweight, but as a dense, living ledger that remembers every cycle of the noon-sun Helios and registers every gravitational draw of VaporSphere. In the mountain monasteries, high cliff sanctuaries, and lapidary lodges of Badakhshan and the Pamir redoubts, Sufi artisans developed the contemplative discipline of naqqāshī—the sacred art of stone engraving, talismanic inscription, and architectural relief.

To these mystical engravers, the strike of the mallet and the bite of the burin are continuous forms of vocalized and somatic remembrance (dhikr). A line carved into living rock is not merely a geometric groove; it is an incision of divine order (al-mīzān) made into the fabric of the material world. By chiseling sacred formulas, rhythmic floral spirals (islimi), and geometric wind-roses into bedrock, lintels, waymarkers, and weapon pommels, the engraver anchors wandering spiritual currents, stabilizes fracturing masonry, and seals protective wards across contested ground.

Sufism 38 of the Chiseled Word was created to empower tier 1 avatars whose roleplay centers on lapidary craftsmanship, structural architectural masonry, talismanic engraving, and the preservation of sacred memory through permanent incision. Worn upon the hands of an artisan-mystic, this focus transforms the physical labor of carving into an effortless, rhythmic meditation, allowing the bearer to read the hidden fault lines of any substance, inscribe wards with supernatural speed, and deflect blunt kinetic trauma through the grounded resonance of living stone.

Description

Sufism 38 of the Chiseled Word consists of a pair of articulated artisan’s fingerless half-gauntlets and forearm wraps, meticulously fitted to cover the wrists, palms, and the backs of the hands while leaving the fingertips entirely free for sensitive tactile inspection and precision tool work. The chassis is crafted from supple, vegetable-tanned mountain goat hide kettle-steeped in acorn gall and copperas to achieve an earthen iron-gray finish, lined with soft, sweat-wicking golden flax and raw silk. The exterior knuckle bands and wrist cuffs are reinforced with overlapping splints of cold-hammered native copper and annealed brass wire, embroidered with interlocking geometric strapwork depicting continuous chisel paths and diamond-point guidelines.

Embedded flush into the back of the dominant hand’s cuff is a three-inch circular medallion of deep azure Badakhshan lapis lazuli flecked with brilliant golden pyrite veins, carved in high relief with the emblem of an eight-pointed star containing an open compass and a crossed diamond burin. Concealed within a hollowed bedding socket on the underside of the lapis medallion is an uncut, coin-sized tier 1 magic crystal glowing with a concentrated indigo-and-amber core, bedded securely in a resilient matrix of boiled pine resin, mastic gum, and finely pulverized slate dust.

Suspended from reinforced rawhide thongs along the flank of the right wrist-guard are a four-inch hardened tool-steel diamond-point burin and a miniature brass-banded horn mallet. Hanging from the inner left wrist is an oil-cured leather scabbard holding a slender agate burnishing stylus, alongside an unbroken loop of ninety-nine miniature prayer beads lathe-turned from dense green river-jasper and oily mountain boxwood. The beads are arranged into three equal groups of thirty-three separated by pairs of cold-forged brass spacer disks. When the artisan moves or strikes a line of rock, the brass spacers tap rhythmically against the burin’s steel socket with a crisp, measured clink-tap, keeping the engraver’s breath and mallet blows locked into an unbroken contemplative cadence.

Detailed Stats

  • Item Classification and Tier Rank:
    • Tier Rank: Tier 1 item.
    • Rarity Rating: Common rarity.
    • Operational Classification: Worn focus and artisan-engraver’s gauntlets.
  • Specific Slot Allocation:
    • Designated Slot: Hands Slot.
    • Slot Consumption: Consumes exactly one gear slot of the nineteen allowable worn gear slots for a tier 1 avatar.
    • Integration Form Factor: Worn directly upon both hands and wrists; leaves the fingertips bare to preserve tactile handling of delicate gems, compasses, stylus points, lockpicks, and weapon grips.
  • Defensive Value:
    • Armor Check (AC) Modifier: Grants a +1 Armor Check bonus to the wearer.
    • Mechanical Boundary Compliance: Complies strictly with the structural limitation restricting defensive bonuses to no more than 3 Armor Check points per item tier level.
  • Structural Durability and Item Hit Points:
    • Resilience Score: Base resilience rating of 10.
    • Total Item Hit Points Formula: Maximum item hit points equal the wearing avatar’s maximum health points plus 10 (calculated as base resilience 10 multiplied by tier level 1).
    • Degradation Mechanics: If subjected to direct physical sunder attacks, crushing forge hammers, or acid immersion, the gauntlets become broken and inert if reduced to half their total hit point pool or lower. If reduced to zero hit points, the leather tears, the lapis medallion splits along its pyrite veins, and the tier 1 crystal fractures into non-magical gray sand.
    • Attunement Ward: When struck while attuned, a successful attack unattunes the item rather than dealing direct damage to its hit points; subsequent hits to the unattuned gauntlets deal normal damage against its hit point pool. Damaged states must be repaired before re-attunement can occur.
  • Attunement Requirements and Handling:
    • Attunement Method: Simple Attunement.
    • Time Requirement: Requires one continuous minute of seated meditation while holding the diamond-point burin against an unworked piece of stone, breathing in measured four-fold cycles, and reciting the contemplative formulas of the sacred inscriber (al-Bārī) to synchronize the crystal matrix with the wearer’s personal mana flow.
    • Capacity Usage: Occupies one of the avatar’s ten allowable active attuned item slots.
    • Single Bearer Bond: Can be bonded to only one avatar at a time; attempts by another creature to attune immediately break the existing bond, causing the original bearer to feel a sudden numbness and a gritty, cold friction across both palms.
  • Valuation and Mercantile Context:
    • Suggested Baseline Value: 40 to 55 Silver pieces (equivalent to 80 to 110 nickels, or 4 to 5.5 gold coins).
    • Economic Dynamics: Operates under a sellers’ market with buyer beware principles. In quarry citadels, masonry guildhalls, gem-cutting souks, and monumental temple worksites, it commands high demand and premium value; among pastoral nomads or marsh boatmen, it is valued primarily as sturdy leather-and-copper work gloves.

Multiple Passives Magic

  • Passive 1: Mīzān of the Lithic Grain (Mineral & Structural Telemetry):
    • While the gauntlets are attuned and worn, the embedded indigo-amber crystal projects an intuitive analytical map of mineral structures directly into the avatar’s Mind’s Eye.
    • When observing stone walls, cavern rock, ores, engraved inscriptions, or metal plates, the user perceives glowing amber lines tracing hidden stress fractures, cleavage planes, mineral veins, hollow chambers, and masonry load points up to thirty feet away.
    • The avatar gains an inherent advantage on all skill checks involving Stone Carving, Masonry, Gem Cutting, Engineering, Architecture, Appraise (Gems/Minerals), and checks made to detect secret stone doors or structural traps. In addition, the user can read any worn, weather-eroded, or deliberately defaced inscription by merely tracing their bare fingers over the grooves.
  • Passive 2: Purity of the Lapidary Hand (Artisan’s Resilience):
    • The continuous micro-vibration of the lapis medallion and the flax-silk lining creates an invisible kinetic dampening and repelling field across the wearer’s hands and forearms.
    • The avatar gains complete immunity to hand tremors, skin blistering, repetitive strain injuries, mallet recoil fatigue, and painful stone-bruises caused by hours of heavy chisel work.
    • Caustic mineral dust, airborne silica, metal filings, and corrosive etching acids produce no irritation, chemical burns, or respiratory coughing fits when handled or inhaled in direct proximity to the gauntlets.
  • Passive 3: Resonant Chisel (Kinetic Displacement):
    • Kinetic energy flowing through the copper and brass embroidery aligns the user’s manual strikes with the natural harmonic frequency of hard surfaces.
    • When the avatar uses a chisel, burin, adze, or pick against stone, masonry, concrete, or wood, their tools carve 25% faster while producing 50% less collateral fracturing and acoustic noise.
    • Physical melee attacks targeting the wearer’s arms or hands glance off the reinforced copper splints and leather cuffs with 50% less concussive shock, converting crushing impacts into smooth lateral deflections.

Multiple Activable Magics

  • Activable Magic 1: Somatic Engraving Cadence (The Chiseled Word / Glyph of Anchoring):
    • Action Cost: Consumes exactly one action during the avatar’s turn.
    • Casting Modality: Somatic casting lasting less than six seconds, requiring the avatar to strike the diamond-point burin once against a solid surface (stone, metal, or wood) with the horn mallet while vocalizing a single, sharp syllable of creation (al-Khafq).
    • Operational Effect: The tier 1 crystal discharges an expanding, luminous pulse of deep indigo-and-amber geometric light across a 30-foot radius.
    • Functional Utility: The surface struck immediately crystallizes with an incandescent glowing glyph that anchors reality within the perimeter for ten minutes. Physical tremors, earthquake shocks, and structural collapses within the radius are neutralized. Hostile creatures caught standing upon the connected floor or ground must make a Reflex or Balance saving throw; on a failure, they are knocked prone and rooted to the spot by localized kinetic friction until the end of their next turn. Allies within the area gain firm footing, ignoring all difficult terrain penalties caused by rubble or loose scree.
    • True Name Interaction: If the true geographical name of the bedrock or the specific quarry of origin is spoken during casting, the radius of the anchoring light expands from 30 feet to 60 feet.
  • Activable Magic 2: Silent Web of the Inscribed Bastion:
    • Action Cost: Consumes exactly one action during the avatar’s turn, or can be triggered as an immediate reaction to an incoming physical crush, projectile volley, or cave-in.
    • Casting Modality: Silent casting executed entirely without vocalization, triggered by directed mental focus and pressing both gloved palms firmly against an adjacent solid surface or across the chest.
    • Operational Effect: Operating under the standard silent casting reduction of 25% potency, the gauntlets project an instantaneous kinetic-mineral barrier across a 20-foot radius centered on the avatar.
    • Tactical Application: When a ceiling collapse, catapult stone, explosion, or crushing slam threatens the avatar and their companions, the barrier absorbs 25% of the incoming damage, safely shunting the concussive force into the ground or surrounding stone foundations.
  • Activable Magic 3: Ritual Chanting of the Permanent Seal (The Ninety-Nine Cuts):
    • Action Cost: Consumes one action to initiate, followed by continuous execution for greater than six seconds (ten continuous minutes), classifying the casting fully as a Ritual.
    • Casting Modality: Ritual casting requiring the avatar to carve a ninety-nine-character calligraphic border along a doorway, structural pillar, weapon blade, or perimeter threshold while maintaining continuous throat-recitation of the attributes of endurance, sliding the ninety-nine jasper-and-boxwood beads through their fingers.
    • Operational Effect: Gaining the full ritual chanting benefit of up to a +25% increase in magical potency, the rite infuses the engraved object or boundary (up to four structural pillars, one doorway, or two weapons) for twenty-four hours.
    • Structural Fortification: Fortified structures double their hardness and damage threshold, rendering them completely immune to mundane battering rams, pickaxes, and siege shattering; fortified weapons deal +25% structural damage against earth, stone constructs, and fortifications.
    • Concentration Risk: Taking damage during the ten-minute carving sequence forces an immediate concentration saving throw; failure breaks the rhythmic chisel cadence, wasting the mana and leaving the inscription inert.

Commercial Channels, Mercantile Establishments, and Regional Valuation of Sufism 38 of the Chiseled Word

  • Lithic Masonry Guildhalls, Quarry Sanctuaries, and Lapidary Lodges:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Across the high scree plateaus, granite canyons, and terraced cliff settlements of Saṃsāra—particularly throughout regions steeped in Pamir and Badakhshan stone-carving traditions—trade in master-grade lapidary and architectural foci is centered within stonecutters’ guildhalls, quarry sanctuaries, and monastic stone lodges. These imposing, dry-stacked granite compounds are built directly into living mountain escarpments, shaded by heavy slate overhangs and supported by rough-hewn basalt pillars. Vast open-air colonnades look out over tiered extraction terraces, splitting pits, and stone-turning yards smelling richly of crushed limestone dust, wet pumice slurries, mutton tallow, linseed oil, and curing mastic resin. The soundscape is dominated by the steady, ringing chime of steel chisels striking hard quartz, the grating hiss of soapstone lapping blocks, and the low, rhythmic throat-chants of apprentice stonecutters reciting mineral cleaving tables.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Securing Sufism 38 of the Chiseled Word within a quarry guildhall requires proof of manual discipline and artisan lineage rather than a mere display of coin. The resident lodge elder or master stone-architect (ustād) evaluates the candidate’s grip, forearm calluses, and manual poise over a block of unworked shale. Using the Mind’s Eye, the elder inspects the avatar’s tier rating and energetic stability to ensure their mana channels can safely harmonize with the gauntlets’ lapis lazuli catalyst without causing sudden kinetic reverberations that fracture cutting burins or shatter delicate reliefs. Payment is accepted in weight-verified silver coinage, certified extraction warrants for fine marble or lapis lazuli, or architectural promissory notes issued by recognized mason syndicates.
    • Purchasing Cost: Because the baseline materials—vegetable-tanned goat hide, raw silk, golden flax, Badakhshan lapis lazuli, tool-grade spring steel, and native copper—are quarried, smelted, and fashioned within regional mountain networks, retail pricing remains tightly regulated. In these stonecutter sanctuaries, the gauntlets sell for 40 to 55 silver pieces (equivalent to 80 to 110 nickels, or 4 to 5.5 gold coins). Avatars holding verified guild credentials with the Guild of Architectural Masons, the Lapidary League, or an allied builders’ collective receive the standard faction discount of 10% multiplied by their tier (a 10% reduction for a tier 1 avatar), bringing the acquisition cost down to between 36 and 49.5 silver pieces.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: When an avatar liquidates a pair of gauntlets back to a stone lodge, the resident gem-carver and master mason subject the focus to meticulous physical and metaphysical diagnostic tests. The diamond-point burin is examined under magnification for micro-chipping, the horn mallet is tested for structural balance, and the lapis lazuli medallion is scanned via the Mind’s Eye to ensure the internal Tier 1 crystal retains its deep indigo-amber core without stress fractures along its pyrite veins. Following Saṃsāra’s merchant baseline, the lodge offers 10% of the item’s intrinsic value multiplied by the seller’s character tier (yielding a 10% payout for a tier 1 avatar, or 4 to 5.5 silver pieces). The transaction is inscribed upon slate ledgers, with funds deposited directly to the avatar’s World Bank account via telegraph, minus the statutory 1% processing fee rounded up to the nearest copper.
  • Metropolitan Imperial Ateliers and Master Seal-Engraver Salons:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Within monumental state capitals, administrative palace precincts, and sovereign treaty courts, elite engraving regalia is acquired within imperial seal ateliers and courtly lapidary salons. Housed within palatial civic exchanges constructed of polished white marble and decorated with intricate glazed tilework, these luxury establishments feature cedar-lined display tables, velvet-lined drawers, and glass-encased brass balances. Master lapidaries in embroidered brocade robes cater to imperial chancellors, court architects, royal heralds, and high-ranking bureaucratic scriveners seeking certified talismanic engraving apparatuses.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Purchasing the gauntlets in an imperial salon necessitates presenting formal identification and undergoing a solvency audit via the Mind’s Eye to confirm an active World Bank standing. The gauntlets are presented in a velvet-lined walnut case alongside an inked parchment manifest certifying the mineral purity of the lapis lazuli, the tensile rating of the goat hide, the true acoustic pitch of the horn mallet, and the harmonic resonance frequency of the embedded crystal. Every legal transaction receives an imperial wax seal for provincial chancery records.
    • Purchasing Cost: Inflated by interstate shipping tariffs, bureaucratic seal assessments, luxury retail markups, and the mandatory 3% municipal point-of-sale tax, prices in metropolitan salons range from 75 to 105 silver pieces (7.5 to 10.5 gold coins). Avatars presenting a verified commission from the Imperial Ministry of Works, the Royal Seal Registry, or the Bureau of Monumental Architecture apply their 10% tier 1 discount, reducing the price to between 67.5 and 94.5 silver pieces.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: An avatar seeking to sell the gauntlets at an imperial atelier must submit them to structural stress analysis. Appraisers inspect the copper wire embroidery for breaks, verify that the horn mallet head has not delaminated, and check civic municipal ledgers to ensure the item carries no active confiscation liens or lingering Banishment Marks. Adhering to the standard retail baseline for a tier 1 avatar, the salon pays between 7.5 and 10.5 silver pieces, deposited directly into the seller’s World Bank ledger to maintain a transparent paper trail for royal revenue auditors.
  • Clandestine Sapper Dens, Flaw-Carver Fences, and Black-Market Quarry Vaults:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Hidden within the subterranean underbelly of mining towns, abandoned extraction galleries, dry cisterns beneath fortress walls, or the backrooms of disreputable tool forges, illicit fences trade in stolen masonry equipment, clandestine sapper rigs, and plundered temple artifacts. These shadowy dens operate behind heavy iron-plated timber bulkheads and false stone walls that can be collapsed instantly with drop-pins to crush inquisitive bailiffs. The atmosphere is damp, claustrophobic, and heavy with the smell of stagnant water, black powder, stale tallow candles, and sour grease, punctuated by the faint scraping of illicit coin-clippers at work.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Access requires an introduction from a recognized sappers’ runner or the presentation of a specific marked copper counter to armed lookouts. Items traded here frequently originate from looted quarry treasuries, mine mutinies, or the salvage gathered when fallen tier 1 avatars dissolve into purple sparks upon death. Transactions are settled entirely in hard, untraceable physical currency—clipped silver coins, raw bullion ingots, or unrefined alluvial dust. World Bank transfers are strictly forbidden to evade judicial scrutiny and financial asset freezing by municipal bailiffs.
    • Purchasing Cost: Clandestine fences enforce an opportunistic pricing model based on urgency. If the dealer knows the buyer is preparing an emergency fortress breach, planning an unsanctioned sapping delve, or fleeing across crumbling mountain ledges where structural stabilization gear is vital for survival, the price surges to between 80 and 130 silver pieces (8 to 13 physical gold coins). Guild tokens and formal artisan licenses carry no weight in these subterranean stalls.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: Black-market sapper fences provide rapid, unvetted liquidation for tools acquired during illegal excavations or violent skirmishes. If the fence has a waiting client among a sappers’ ring, demolition squad, or architectural counterfeit syndicate, they may pay up to twice the standard merchant rate, offering 8 to 11 silver pieces in untraceable coin. Conversely, if the seller appears desperate, bleeding, or pursued by quarry watchmen, the fence will drive the payout down to as little as 2 silver coins.
  • Frontier Mining Bivouacs, Scree-Trail Outposts, and Terraced Caravans:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Along remote mountain passes, newly opened mineral concessions, and high-altitude scree trails where miners extract raw jade and lapis lazuli directly from glacial outcrops, commerce takes place from felt yurts, fortified freight wagons, and roadside stone shelters (ribats). Caravans feature drop-down wooden trestle counters loaded with pick heads, coils of hemp rope, leather flasks of lamp oil, and boxes of rough abrasive stones. The air carries the sharp scent of cold mountain slate, bitter juniper smoke, mule sweat, and roasting barley meal.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Business at a frontier mining bivouac is straightforward and practical. The caravan factor deals over a rough slate tabletop, keeping a heavy stonecutter’s hammer or cocked repeating crossbow within arm’s reach. The buyer inspects the gauntlets, testing the fit across the knuckles and striking the burin against a granite slab to hear the clear acoustic chime of the brass washers. Because these high-altitude waystations operate in unincorporated frontier territories beyond municipal lines, municipal sales taxes do not apply, though trade is subject to provincial road tolls.
    • Purchasing Cost: In frontier mining camps and scree-trail outposts, Sufism 38 of the Chiseled Word sells for 48 to 68 silver pieces. Caravan factors eagerly accept functional trade barter, trading the gauntlets for high-value mineral commodities such as unworked lapis nodules, rough tourmaline crystals, bars of refined blister copper, leather bags of sulfur, or biological fluids drawn from mountain drakes using fluid collectors.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: Frontier merchants operate with limited hard coin reserves and prioritize gear that can be immediately resold to outbound sapping expeditions or prospecting parties. When buying the gauntlets from a tier 1 avatar, the merchant pays the standard 10% baseline (4.8 to 6.8 silver pieces), usually settling the exchange in vital expedition provisions—such as climbing crampons, iron pitons, tallow flasks, or dried horse meat. Any cash payout is logged in the caravan’s road book to satisfy frontier patrols.
  • Statutory Taxation, Banking Overhead, and Currency Encumbrance:
    • Municipal Taxation and Road Transit Tariffs: All legitimate transactions involving the gauntlets fall under the statutory fiscal codes of Saṃsāra’s sovereign territorial states. Purchases finalized within incorporated Quarry Cities, Monumental Capitals, or Canal Havens incur a mandatory 3% municipal point-of-sale tax. Merchant wagons transporting lapidary goods across provincial mountain boundaries must pay a 5% ad valorem transit tariff assessed by pass garrisons, alongside an additional 1% gate toll at the Central City redoubt. Foreign travelers lacking recognized local registration are assessed double rates (a 6% sales tax and a 10% transit tariff).
    • World Bank Administrative Deductions: When sales proceeds are credited to an avatar’s account through the commercial banking telegraph system, the network automatically deducts a 1% administrative fee, rounded up to the nearest copper coin. On a standard sale yielding 5 silver pieces (50 copper), the bank deducts 1 copper piece, depositing 4 silver and 9 copper into the character’s Mind’s Eye ledger. Accessible transaction records remain permanently on file for provincial tax magistrates and guild overseers tracking architectural commerce.
    • Physical Coinage Weight Versus Extradimensional Storage: Avatars carrying bags of physical coins while working along vertical quarry cliffs or tight mining crawlways face distinct physical hazards and encumbrance penalties. Carrying dozens of loose copper, nickel, or silver pieces creates substantial deadweight that strains balance, encumbers climbing ropes, and produces an audible metallic rattle that echoes off rock walls, drawing aggressive subterranean beasts. Storing currency within an Extradimensional Pouch eliminates all coin weight, volume, and noise, allowing the stone-engraver to scale vertical cliffs, swing hammers, and navigate unstable scree slopes completely unencumbered.

Roleplay Dynamics, Lithic Tactics, and Defensive-Offensive Applications of Sufism 38 of the Chiseled Word

  • Vertical Granite Quarries, Scree Ledges, and Fault-Line Chasms:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: High upon the sheer, wind-scoured granite escarpments of Badakhshan and the Pamir redoubts, quarrymen and stonecutters work along dizzying, narrow ledges suspended thousands of feet above jagged talus slopes. The relentless glare of Helios at the eleventh hour bakes the rock face, while the gravitational surges of VaporSphere induce spontaneous rock bursts, opening seismic fissures and sending sheets of razor-sharp shale tumbling down the cliffs. Mountain drakes, predatory rock-wyrms, and rogue sappers contest these rich mineral veins, using the crumbling footing to push workers into the abyss.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • While clinging to vertical cliff faces or working along crumbling shale chutes, the avatar relies on the Mīzān of the Lithic Grain passive. Glowing amber and indigo stress vectors illuminate the rock in the avatar’s Mind’s Eye, instantly mapping hidden cleavage planes, hollow pockets, and unstable balance points up to thirty feet away, preventing the artisan from anchoring pitons into brittle stone.
      • Handling hours of jarring hammer blows and sharp rock debris, the Purity of the Lapidary Hand passive prevents muscle strain, blisters, and bone-bruises. Inhaling pulverized silica and limestone dust produces no coughing or lung irritation, keeping the engraver’s breath rhythmic and calm.
      • If a rockslide shears from an overhang or an aerial beast hurls a boulder down the cliff, the avatar triggers the Silent Web of the Inscribed Bastion. Pressing both gloved palms firmly against the granite cliff face, a kinetic-mineral barrier expands twenty feet, absorbing 25% of the crushing blunt force and dispersing the shock safely into the mountain’s bedrock foundation.
      • In close-quarters cliff skirmishes, the +1 Armor Check bonus represents the hardened goat hide cuffs and cold-hammered copper splints turning aside slashing talons, picks, and flying rock splinters aimed at the hands, wrists, and forearms.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When territorial drakes or raiders advance across a narrow rock shelf, the avatar activates the Somatic Engraving Cadence (The Chiseled Word). Striking the diamond-point burin into the shelf with the horn mallet while vocalizing the sharp syllable al-Khafq, a glowing indigo-amber glyph flares across a 30-foot radius. The tremor shakes pursuing foes off balance, forcing them to make Reflex or Balance saves or fall prone and become rooted by localized kinetic friction, while allies glide across the fractured scree without penalty.
      • In close combat, the avatar leverages their tier 1 pass-through die (1d4) alongside their steel diamond-point burin as a punch-dagger, applying iterative attack penalties (one-half damage for secondary actions). Guided by the Mīzān passive, strikes against stony carapaces or rock-wyrm scales target natural cleavage lines, ignoring armor hardness.
      • Before quarrying dangerous overhangs, the avatar performs the Ritual Chanting of the Permanent Seal (The Ninety-Nine Cuts). Carving sacred calligraphy along key load-bearing buttresses while sliding the ninety-nine jasper beads, the cliff face doubles its structural threshold for twenty-four hours, preventing spontaneous rock bursts from crushing the work crew.
  • Subterranean Extraction Drifts, Mine Adits, and Karst Siphons:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: Deep beneath mountainous massifs, ancient lapis lazuli and coal mines plunge into suffocating darkness, subterranean rivers, and labyrinthine karst chambers. The air is stagnant, heavy with sulfurous moisture, coal dust, and noxious pocket gases. Creaking timber stull sets groan under the immense weight of settling strata, and subterranean troglodytes, burrowing chitterers, and rival claim-jumpers stalk the unlit adits, using cave-ins as natural siege weapons.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Navigating unmapped, pitch-black mine crawls, the avatar reads the surrounding stone without lanterns. Tracing bare fingertips over damp cavern walls, the Mīzān passive reads microscopic fissures and structural settling, alerting the group to impending roof collapses or flooded siphon pockets thirty feet ahead.
      • Contact with corrosive mine drainage, vitriol pools, and caustic mineral efflorescence is rendered harmless by the Purity passive, which insulates the user’s palms and wrists against acid burns and skin peeling.
    • When a ceiling timber snaps or a subterranean blast triggers an overhead cave-in, the avatar deploys the Silent Web of the Inscribed Bastion. Slamming gloved palms against the tunnel walls, the field absorbs 25% of the concussive kinetic crushing damage, channeling the rockfall into side arches and keeping the escape route open.
    • The gauntlets’ copper and brass splints turn aside piercing bites from burrowing vermin and errant pick blows during frantic tunnel skirmishes (+1 Armor Check bonus).
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When swarmers or rival miners bottle the party inside a narrow drift, the avatar executes the Somatic Engraving Cadence upon the cavern floor. The resonant indigo shockwave ripples through the rock column, knocking hostile tunnel beasts prone and rooting them to the damp stone, allowing companions to withdraw or counter-attack safely.
    • Using the Resonant Chisel passive, the avatar can carve emergency escape routes or wedge trenches through solid stone 25% faster with 50% less acoustic noise, preventing nearby subterranean predators from pinpointing their location.
    • The avatar executes the Ninety-Nine Cuts ritual upon the drift’s wooden support stulls and crossbeams. For twenty-four hours, the timbering doubles its load capacity and becomes immune to fracturing, allowing the team to delve deep into unstable fault zones without fear of structural collapse.
  • Besieged Fortress Gatehouses, Masonry Breaches, and Sapper Counter-Mines:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: Along disputed frontiers, warfare revolves around massive dressed-stone bastions, ashlar curtain walls, and subterranean counter-sapping tunnels. Ballista bolts shatter crenellations, trebuchet stones pulverize parapets, and combat takes place amidst clouds of choking lime dust, burning pitch, and falling rubble. Sapper squads dig furiously under foundation towers, attempting to undermine fortress corners before defenders can locate and breach their tunnels.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Stationed atop a crumbling wall under artillery bombardment, the Mīzān passive reveals structural shock lines in the stonework. The avatar directs defensive repairs to the exact load-bearing ashlar blocks under greatest strain, preventing cascading wall failures.
      • The continuous acoustic clink-tap of the brass spacer disks striking the burin anchors the avatar’s focus (dhikr), steadying the nervous system against the concussive disorientation of exploding siege charges.
    • When an enemy trebuchet stone or catapult projectile strikes the battlements, the avatar initiates the Silent Web of the Inscribed Bastion. The kinetic barrier absorbs 25% of the devastating blunt trauma, shunting the concussive wave through the parapet foundation and preventing stone fragmentation from scything down the garrison.
    • The gauntlets deflect flying granite splinters, crossbow bolts, and pike thrusts aimed at the hands and arms during close-quarters breach defense (+1 Armor Check bonus).
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When enemy sappers breach a wall or push an assault ram into the gate passage, the avatar strikes the gatehouse paving with the burin and horn mallet to trigger the Somatic Engraving Cadence. The anchoring shockwave drops the assault team to the flagstones, trapping them under kinetic friction and leaving them exposed to portcullis fire.
    • Utilizing the Resonant Chisel passive in sapping counter-mines, the avatar digs intercept shafts 25% faster with half the acoustic vibration, allowing defensive engineers to undermine enemy tunnels undetected before collapsing them from below.
    • During a lull in the siege, the avatar performs the Ninety-Nine Cuts ritual upon the main iron-banded timber gates. The ritual doubles the gate’s hardness and damage threshold for twenty-four hours, turning aside enemy rams and rendering the portal impervious to mundane splitting axes.
  • Ancient Ruined Necropolises, Crypt Tombs, and Bas-Relief Labyrinths:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: Forgotten hypogea, cliff-tombs, and underground mausoleums carved into mountain roots hold the dynastic secrets of Saṃsāra’s earlier ages. Millennia of seismic shifting have cracked sarcophagi, collapsed access ramps, and activated pressure-sensitive floor traps. Ancient petroglyphs and eroded inscriptions guard hidden vaults, while stone gargoyles, clay automations, and desiccated guardians patrol corridors smelling of dry natron, centuries-old dust, and moldering linen.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Exploring treacherous tomb corridors, the Mīzān passive reveals mechanical counter-weights, pressure plates, and hollow dart-trap cavities inside dressed-stone walls thirty feet away, allowing the avatar to spot and disarm lithic mechanisms before triggers are stepped on.
      • By running bare fingertips over severely weather-eroded, chiseled hieroglyphs and defaced mortuary steles, the avatar reconstructs and translates ancient architectural formulas and warning inscriptions without requiring magical deciphering scrolls.
    • When an ancient ceiling counter-weight drops or a crushing rolling-boulder trap triggers, the avatar activates the Silent Web of the Inscribed Bastion, absorbing 25% of the crushing impact and allowing the party to slip under descending stone slabs safely.
    • The reinforced leather cuffs and copper splints turn aside grasping skeletal hands, venomous dart traps, and slicing scythe blades (+1 Armor Check bonus).
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When animated stone sarcophagus guardians or clay golems ambush the party, the avatar deploys the Somatic Engraving Cadence into the tomb floor. The anchoring pulse jars the animated constructs’ lithic balance, rooting them to the stone pavers and disrupting their locomotive kinetics for an entire combat round.
    • Armed with their diamond-point burin and using the Resonant Chisel passive, the avatar strikes directly at an animated construct’s primary structural joints, dealing +25% damage against stone and clay bodies while bypassing outer defenses.
    • Before entering an inner burial sanctum, the avatar conducts the Ninety-Nine Cuts ritual upon the weapons of two companions. The infused blades gain +25% structural damage against stone constructs and earth elementals for twenty-four hours, turning standard steel into devastating masonry-cleaving tools.
  • Hydrothermal Calderas, Basalt Columns, and Acidic Fissure Vents:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: In volcanically active mountain basins, rivers of superheated mineral slurry cut through hexagonal basalt columns, boiling mud pots, and brittle sulfur encrustations. The air is stifling, thick with choking volcanic gases, acrid sulfur steam, and drifting pumice flakes. Magma drakes, obsidian scavengers, and sulfur miners fight across fragile volcanic crusts that can collapse into boiling magma pockets under the slightest excess weight.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Traversing brittle volcanic crusts, the Mīzān passive outlines the thickness and weight tolerance of basalt shelves, revealing subsurface steam vents and hollow magma tubes up to thirty feet away to guide the party along stable structural paths.
    • Direct contact with boiling geothermal mud, caustic sulfuric crusts, and hot mineral acid cannot burn or blister the avatar’s hands, insulated by the Purity of the Lapidary Hand passive.
    • When a hydrothermal steam explosion or sudden basalt column collapse showers the party in scalding fragments, the avatar deploys the Silent Web of the Inscribed Bastion. The field absorbs 25% of the concussive kinetic and thermal shock, deflecting hot stone fragments away from the group.
    • The copper knuckle splints and thick leather cuffs turn aside sharp obsidian shards and snapping crustacean claws (+1 Armor Check bonus).
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Confronted by hostile raiders or magma beasts across an active geothermal flat, the avatar strikes a basalt pillar with the burin to trigger the Somatic Engraving Cadence. The resulting pulse travels through the hexagonal columns, rooting enemies in place while sending micro-fractures through the hostile targets’ footing.
    • Using the Mīzān passive to identify critical stress nodes holding back pressurized steam geysers, the avatar can use a secondary action to drive an iron chisel into a weak fissure, unleashing a controlled blast of scalding steam that blinds pursuing enemies.
    • Before navigating fragile volcanic bridges, the avatar chants the Ninety-Nine Cuts ritual along the basalt arch. The span doubles its structural load capacity for twenty-four hours, allowing heavy gear and pack beasts to cross boiling calderas without breaking through the stone crust.
  • Stratospheric Sky-Keel Slipways, Megalithic Foundations, and Aerial Buttresses:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: High above Saṃsāra’s cloud-oceans, floating megalithic citadels and soaring aerial bridges are anchored to buoyant lodestone reefs and hollow stone sky-keels. Navigators and sky-masons work along external buttresses thousands of spans above the planetary surface, buffeted by stratospheric wind shears and sub-zero squalls. Sky-corsairs, aerial gargoyles, and rogue demolitionists seek to sever the keystone anchors that hold the floating stone sanctuaries aloft.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Working along narrow exterior sky-buttresses without handrails, the metronomic clink-tap of the brass spacer disks grounds the inner ear, completely eliminating high-altitude vertigo and spatial disorientation.
    • The Mīzān passive maps wind shear stress, harmonic vibrations, and weight displacement across floating megalithic platforms, warning the avatar of tension cracks before stone keels fracture under aerial turbulence.
    • If a sky-corsair vessel rams an aerial bridge or an aerial bomb detonates near an outrigger, the avatar triggers the Silent Web of the Inscribed Bastion. The barrier absorbs 25% of the concussive kinetic impact, shunting the blast into the floating island’s core ballast.
    • The +1 Armor Check bonus deflects raking talons of flying predators and snapping aerial tether cables aimed at the hands and wrists.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When sky-corsairs land on a floating plaza to board an aerial sanctuary, the avatar deploys the Somatic Engraving Cadence into the plaza flagstones. The shockwave ripples across the masonry, knocking boarding marines prone and rooting them to the stone, preventing them from rushing the inner gates.
    • The avatar uses the Resonant Chisel passive to rapidly sever docking grapnels, cut away sabotaged stone balance vanes, or anchor emergency arrestor chains 25% faster during boarding actions.
    • Before a floating bastion navigates a severe stratospheric squall, the avatar executes the Ninety-Nine Cuts ritual upon the four primary sky-keel anchors. The megalithic joints double their resistance to shearing forces for twenty-four hours, keeping the sky-city intact against hurricane winds.

Perception of Activation:

  • Five Senses Breakdown:
    • Visual Perception (Sight):
      • User Experience: Upon activation, the visual field sharpens into high-contrast architectural clarity. Shadows within stone fractures peel back, revealing the internal grain of surrounding materials. The circular Badakhshan lapis lazuli medallion on the dominant hand ignites with a deep, radiant ultramarine luminescence, causing the golden pyrite flecks within the stone to sparkle like an active celestial field. The carved compass and diamond-point burin emblem blaze with crisp amber-gold light, while the annealed copper splints and brass wire embroidery trace glowing geometric guidelines across the wrists. Looking upon bedrock, masonry walls, cavern ceilings, or mineral deposits, the user’s vision overlays glowing indigo and warm amber vectors in the Mind’s Eye, outlining hidden fault lines, cleavage planes, weight-bearing stress points, hollow cavities, and structural traps up to thirty feet away. Weather-eroded or defaced inscriptions light up in legible, phantom script. Under True Sight, an expanding mandala of intersecting chisel marks, compass arcs, and eight-pointed stars ripples outward across the ground.
      • Observer Experience: Observers see the lapis lazuli disc on the craftsman’s wrist flare with a rich, lantern-like indigo-and-amber glow that casts a sharp, celestial blue halo over the artisan’s hands, tools, and the adjacent stone floor. The copper and brass wirework gleams with warm, molten highlights. Viewers using magical detection or True Sight witness geometric lines of deep sapphire light radiating outward through the surrounding rock, accompanied by translucent calligraphic bands of ancient script circling the user’s forearms.
    • Auditory Perception (Sound):
      • User Experience: The ambient rumble of settling rock, quarry shouts, or echoing tunnel noise recedes into a structured acoustic order. The contact of the diamond burin, horn mallet, and brass spacer disks against the steel tools resolves into a rhythmic, metronomic clink-tap reminiscent of an artisan striking slate in perfect meter (dhikr). A resonant, deep-pitched acoustic hum—a vocal drone attuned to the liturgical recitation of divine stability (al-Bārī)—vibrates through the carpal bones, radius, and ulna, harmonizing with the natural resonance frequency of the stone floor. Structural conditions register as audible tones: solid, uncompromised bedrock hums with a deep, warm bass chord, while subterranean fractures, hollow pockets, and shearing stress emit a brittle, glass-like harmonic hiss.
      • Observer Experience: Bystanders hear the artisan’s gear produce a crisp, bell-like clink-tap that rings out with clockwork regularity, carrying cleanly through collapsing rubble, whistling cavern drafts, or shouting combatants without grating on the ears. Those standing within arm’s reach report hearing a subtle, low-frequency lithic vibration beneath the avatar’s words, resembling the subterranean groan of deep tectonic strata coming to rest.
    • Olfactory Perception (Smell):
      • User Experience: Activation releases an instantaneous, grounding wave of dry, clean mineral scents as the goat-hide chassis and resin bedding warm against the skin. The user’s nostrils fill with the crisp, ozone-rich scent of freshly split granite, cold mountain flint struck by steel, cured acorn gall leather, and the balsamic sweetness of mastic gum and mountain pine resin. This crisp aromatic veil purges respiratory passages, neutralizing the nausea of sulfurous mine gases, damp black-powder smoke, choking limestone dust, and decomposing subterranean refuse.
      • Observer Experience: Anyone standing within a five-to-ten-foot radius detects a sudden, refreshing draft of mountain-air freshness. Even in stagnant mine adits or damp subterranean vaults, observers smell the crisp aroma of rain-washed slate, freshly dressed marble, and aged pine resin, bringing immediate psychological grounding and lifting the claustrophobic dread of underground spaces.
    • Gustatory Perception (Taste):
      • User Experience: The user experiences a crisp, mineral-rich sensation across the palate, identical to drinking chilled glacial meltwater drawn from a deep quartz cavern, followed by a faint, pleasant hint of wild mountain thyme and sweet mastic gum. Salivary glands activate smoothly, washing away dry rock dust, limestone cottonmouth, and the metallic, bitter taste of fear and adrenaline.
      • Observer Experience: Observers do not taste the activation directly under normal conditions; however, individuals standing close by during an active engraving shockwave report a faint mineral coolness on their lips, like inhaling cold mist near a cascading waterfall striking granite boulders.
  • Tactile and Somatosensory Perception (Touch):
    • User Experience: The gauntlets deliver an immediate sensation of grounded stability, skeletal alignment, and weightlessness across the hands, wrists, and forearms. Hand tremors, muscular micro-spasms, and joint stiffness vanish completely; the user’s grip becomes unwavering. The physical weight of the steel burin and horn mallet feels balanced and buoyant. The user feels anchored to the bedrock below; their feet feel rooted to the earth, giving them effortless balance across loose shale, slick cavern mud, or crumbling cliff ledges as though standing on dry, level flagstones.
    • Observer Experience: Touching the gauntlets reveals a cool, dense surface that feels as unyielding as solid basalt beneath the supple grain of the leather. Contact with the lapis lazuli medallion imparts a gentle, rhythmic vibrational pulse that tingles pleasantly against the palm.
  • Multiple Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Mīzān Lithic Grain & Structural Telemetry:
      • The avatar receives an instantaneous analytical map of surrounding mineral masses in their Mind’s Eye. Cleavage planes, load-bearing stress lines, hidden fissures, hollow rooms, and structural traps appear as color-coded vectors, eliminating manual sounding and guesswork.
    • Seismic & Gravitational Grounding Telemetry:
      • The user senses seismic settling, subterranean tectonic groans, and the gravitational pull of VaporSphere as localized hydrostatic pressure across the wrists, providing advance warning of impending cave-ins, tremors, or rock bursts several minutes before stone shears.
    • Kinetic Shock Dispersion Awareness:
      • When initiating the inscribed bastion, the avatar intuitively calculates the kinetic force, mass, and velocity of falling boulders, catapult shot, or overhead collapses, understanding the exact angle to channel the concussive energy down through their arms and into the bedrock foundation.
    • Epigraphic Memory Reconstruction:
      • By passing bare fingertips across eroded petroglyphs, weathered hieroglyphs, or defaced mortuary steles, the avatar intuitively perceives the original strokes and intent of the long-dead artisan, translating the text without magical comprehension scrolls.
    • Resonant Chisel Harmonic Intuition:
      • The user instinctively senses the natural acoustic resonance of any stone or wooden barrier, intuitively knowing where to place a chisel tip and how hard to strike to split the block cleanly without splintering the surrounding material.
  • Perspectives on Activation:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • For the lapidary mystic, activating the gauntlets replaces artisanal fatigue, tunnel dread, and structural anxiety with deep, calculating poise. The chaotic chaos of an unstable mine, a crumbling cliff face, or a subterranean ambush resolves into an orderly matrix of structural forces and cleavage lines. Danger is faced without panic; the avatar perceives the stone not as an unyielding, crushing enemy, but as a living ledger of natural balance that can be read, braced, engraved, and commanded through divine order (al-mīzān).
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • To onlookers, the avatar transforms from a dust-covered laborer into an unshakeable master-mason or lithic anchor. Their movements become fluid, deliberate, and authoritative, framed by the bright indigo lantern-glow at their wrist and the crisp, rhythmic chiming of the brass spacing disks. In the midst of collapsing tunnels, shaking earthquakes, or frantic subterranean skirmishes, the artisan’s calm bearing and steady hands restore morale and discipline to frightened companions.
  • Comprehensive Positives of Activation:
    • Manual Ergonomic Immunity: Grants total immunity to hand tremors, repetitive strain injuries, mallet recoil fatigue, palm blisters, and bone-bruises from prolonged chisel work.
    • Environmental Dust and Acid Protection: Airborne silica, limestone dust, metal filings, and corrosive etching acids produce no chemical burns, skin peeling, or respiratory irritation when handled in proximity to the gauntlets.
    • Mineral and Trap Detection: Instantly reveals hidden stress fractures, hollow chambers, ore veins, and mechanical stone pressure plates across a thirty-to-sixty-foot radius.
    • Tremor Stabilization and Entity Rooting: The Somatic Engraving Cadence neutralizes local earthquake tremors and collapses while rooting hostile entities to the floor and knocking them prone, while allies ignore difficult scree and rubble terrain.
    • Crushing and Cave-In Impact Mitigation: The Inscribed Bastion ability absorbs 25% of incoming damage from falling boulders, catapult stones, or collapsing masonry, safely shunting the concussive shock into the earth.
    • Accelerated and Silent Stone Carving: Hand tools carve stone 25% faster while producing 50% less collateral fracturing and acoustic noise, allowing stealthy sapping and rapid repair.
    • Structural Fortification and Weapon Infusion: The Ninety-Nine Cuts ritual doubles the hardness and damage threshold of up to four structural pillars or portals, or grants weapons +25% structural damage against stone constructs for twenty-four hours.
    • Forearm and Hand Physical Protection: Provides a reliable +1 Armor Check bonus that deflects slashing claws, flying rock splinters, and pick points aimed at the hands and wrists.
  • Comprehensive Negatives of Activation:
    • Inescapable Acoustic Ticking: The brass spacer disks strike the steel burin socket with every movement, producing a crisp, rhythmic chime that imposes severe penalties on attempts to move silently.
    • Distinct Visual and Astral Luminescence: The intense indigo-and-amber glow of the lapis lazuli medallion illuminates the user in darkness and blazes brightly on the astral plane, alerting lurking subterranean predators and rival sappers.
    • Noticeable Mineral Scent Signature: The clean, distinct aroma of struck flint, ozone, and pine mastic leaves a noticeable trail that keen-scented cave beasts can track against drafts.
    • Catastrophic Catalyst Fracture Risk: Channelling active spellcraft carries the baseline risk where rolling a 1 on a d20 results in the internal Tier 1 crystal shattering along its pyrite veins, stripping the gauntlets of all magical abilities until repaired.
    • Ritual Vulnerability and Interruption: The Ninety-Nine Cuts ritual requires ten uninterrupted minutes of calligraphic carving and continuous vocal throat-chanting; taking damage during this time forces an immediate concentration save or breaks the ritual and ruins the inscription.
    • Focused Item Sunder Risk: Because the lapis lazuli medallion openly glows on the back of the hand, intelligent adversaries can easily target the hands slot, risking attunement loss and the physical destruction of the gemstone.

The practitioner must be capable of channelling mana into an indigo-amber crystal matrix, establishing mineral-resonance telemetry pathways, and anchoring structural stabilization wards (al-Bārī).
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Step 1: Leather Selection, Gall-Steeping, and Gauntlet Cutting:
      • Skive the acorn-gall-tanned mountain goat hide to an even thickness of three-sixty-fourths of an inch, ensuring the grain is dense and pliable.
      • Lay out the templates for the fingerless half-gauntlets, tracing the wrist wraps, palm covers, and open finger sleeves that terminate at the proximal interphalangeal joints.
      • Cut the leather pieces using sharp shears, bevel the exposed edges, and treat the flesh side with a light rubbing of sweet almond oil to maintain flexibility under heavy strain.
    • Step 2: Flax-Silk Lining Assembly and Under-Glove Integration:
      • Cut the golden flax and raw mulberry silk twill to mirror the leather shell pieces.
      • Sew the lining to the interior of the goat-hide cuffs using fine-count waxed silk thread in a double-pass running stitch, leaving rolled, non-chafing hems around the wrist openings and thumb holes.
      • Test-fit the chassis against a wooden hand form to confirm complete freedom of movement for tool-handling, delicate stylus grips, and somatic casting gestures.
    • Step 3: Badakhshan Lapis Lazuli Lapidary, Emblem Carving, and Rear Bedding Excavation:
      • Grind the lapis lazuli slab on the soapstone lapping block using wet corundum slurries until it forms a uniform circular medallion, three inches in diameter and three-eighths of an inch thick.
      • Using diamond burins and the bow drill, engrave the face in high relief with the emblem of an eight-pointed star containing an open compass and a crossed diamond-point burin, cutting the relief grooves to a depth of one millimeter.
      • Turn the medallion over and excavate a central circular recess on the reverse side, measuring one and one-eighth inches wide and one-quarter inch deep, tailored to receive the Tier 1 Magic Crystal.
      • Polish the carved relief on the leather lap using tin oxide paste until the lapis gleams with an oily, glass-like luster and the golden pyrite flecks sparkle under direct light.
    • Step 4: Tool Forging, Mallet Assembly, and Agate Stylus Shaping:
      • Heat the high-carbon spring steel rod in the charcoal hearth to a cherry-red heat (approximately 800°C), draw the tip down to a sharp diamond point on the miniature anvil, quench it in mineral oil, and temper it to a pale straw hue to ensure edge retention against hard granite.
      • Bore an eyelet through the burin’s terminal socket and polish the flats with emery paper.
      • Lathe-turn the goat-horn mallet head, fit two cold-hammered brass bands around its striking faces to prevent split delamination, and pin a short hardwood handle into the eye.
      • Grind and polish the agate burnishing stylus to a tapered round tip, mounting it into a brass ferrule.
    • Step 5: Copper Splint Forming and Brass Guideline Embroidery:
      • Cut and planish four curved copper splints to fit over the dorsal knuckle band and forearm cuff of each gauntlet.
      • Pierce mounting holes along the perimeter of the copper splints using needle punches.
      • Stitch the copper plates to the outer goat hide using annealed brass wire, embroidering interlocking geometric strapwork and diamond-point chisel guidelines across the wrist guards.
    • Step 6: Bead Lathe-Turning and Rosary Stringing:
      • Mount the sixty-six green river-jasper and thirty-three mountain boxwood blanks onto the hand-cranked spindle lathe, turning each into a six-millimeter sphere and drilling a one-millimeter hole through the center.
      • Polish the wooden beads with sweet oil and pumice; tumble-polish the jasper beads with fine alumina slurry.
      • String the ninety-nine beads onto braided silk cord in three sets of thirty-three, separated by pairs of cold-forged brass spacer washers, and terminate the loop with a rawhide suspension thong.
    • Step 7: Pine Resin, Mastic, and Slate Dust Bedding Compounding:
      • Place the clarified pine oleoresin and mastic gum tears into the glazed ceramic crucible, warming them gently over the spirit lamp until liquefied into a thick, golden syrup.
      • Slowly fold in the sifted slate dust with the glass stirring rod, blending continuously until the mixture forms a dark, resilient, elastic bedding paste that remains pliable at body heat.
    • Step 8: Catalyst Seating, Mana Infusion, and Medallion Mounting:
      • Press a uniform layer of the warm pine-mastic bedding mortar into the rear socket of the carved lapis lazuli medallion.
      • Seat the coin-sized Tier 1 Magic Crystal into the mortar, ensuring its upper facet sits flush with the rim of the stone.
      • Channel personal mana continuously into the crystal matrix for twelve minutes while reciting the liturgical formulas of stability and structural order (al-Bārī wa al-mīzān), guiding the energy until the crystal flares with an internal indigo-and-amber glow.
      • Anchor the lapis medallion to the cuff of the dominant hand’s gauntlet using four heavy copper prongs stitched through the reinforced leather.
    • Step 9: Rigging Accessory Attachment and Kinetic Calibration:
      • Secure the diamond-point burin and horn mallet to the right wrist guard using rawhide thongs.
      • Mount the leather scabbard holding the agate stylus and the ninety-nine-bead rosary loop to the inner left wrist.
      • Don both gauntlets, strike the burin tip once against the basalt test slab with the horn mallet, and listen to the acoustic chime of the brass spacer washers: verify that the contact produces a clean, metronomic clink-tap without jarring the wrist or shifting the leather chassis.
    • Step 10: Consecration, Smudging, and Structural Verification:
      • Ignite the herbal smudge bundle of pine needles, mastic tears, and wild thyme, passing both gauntlets and their suspended tools through the aromatic smoke forty-nine times while invoking Gaialilith as the mother of bedrock and enduring stone.
      • Anoint the lapis lazuli medallion with three drops of glacial meltwater to close the energetic matrix, then let the gauntlets rest upon a flat stone surface for one hour.
      • Roll a d20 to determine the final crafting outcome:
        • 2–19: Standard crafting success; the gauntlets gain an item resilience rating of 10 and a maximum hit point pool equal to the wearing avatar’s base plus 10.
        • 20: Exceptional lithic resonance; the item gains a permanent +1 bonus on all checks made to carve stone, detect structural traps, and resist physical displacement.
        • 1: Catastrophic structural fracture; the internal crystal shatters along its pyrite lines during the final cooling, destroying the catalyst and requiring replacement of the gemstone matrix.

Iron-Gray Hand-Wraps, Tower of Seven-Score Basalts That Would Not Stand, and Silent Mason Who Bound Mountain with a Chiseled Line

In that uncounted and salt-crusted age of the four-cornered world Saṃsāra, when the great eye of Helios was first hammered into the noon-sky at the eleventh hour by wedges of cold brass—so that no twilight came to refresh the blistered shoulders of the quarry-slaves—the children of the middle kingdoms dropped down from the clouds like hail upon a threshing floor. They were cast down without lineage, without alphabets, and without houses; their fingernails were torn from scrabbling upon the granite rubble of the Pamir shelf; and their bellies were filled with nothing but the dry flour of pounded wild vetch. And though the gray earth-mother Gaialilith opened her arms of moist loam and bitter shale to cradle their broken knees, keeping their breath inside their ribs, the great sponge of the forgetting had wiped their skulls clean of all ancient arts, so that a builder knew not whether an arch was held by its keystone or by the blood of a slaughtered heifer, nor did an overseer understand that stone hath a grain like the grain of cedar, which will not bear the stroke of an angry fool.

Now among all the tribulations that afflicted the high plateau of Badakhshan in those raw mornings, none was so hideous as the celestial madness of VaporSphere. For whenever that violet belly did swell and roll in the vault of heaven, hanging low over the jagged needles of the granite passes like a swollen dropsical bladder, it draggeth upon the molten iron and the dark water deep within the belly of the earth, as a moon draggeth the tide of an oily sea. Then did the foundations of the mountains groan with the sound of grinding molars; the basalt ledges did shear without warning, dropping whole camps of herders into bottomless scree-chasms; and the hearts of men were seized with a black, quivering fever of vanity, wherein each petty chieftain sought to build a wall thicker than his brother’s, believing that heaps of unhewn rocks could shield his miserable carcass from the wrath of the heavens.

Upon the sheerest shoulder of the high mountain Koh-i-Lapis—which the ancient glossator hath annotated as The-Spire-Where-the-Blue-Stars-Weep—there ruled a tyrant and quarry-satrap whose name is written in the corrupted cuneiform as Mir-Qabūs-of-the-Iron-Trowel, though the running commentary in the lower margin rendereth the title as The-Boar-Who-Heaps-Mud. He was an avatar of broad girth and heavy jaw, possessing forearms like the thighs of a draft-ox, yet his soul was as blind and coarse as an unslaked lump of lime. Mir-Qabūs believed that the earth was a rebellious beast that must be subdued with iron wedges and the whip; and he boasted across the market bazaars that he would build a fortress upon the very lip of the Great Cleaving Fault—a tower of seven-score dressed basalts so colossal that even if the sky should rot and drop from its hinges, his throne would remain suspended above the clouds.

To this end, the satrap drove four thousand bondmen into the extraction cuts with whips of bull-sinew. From the hour when Helios first scorched the stone until the eleventh hour when the heat split the rock-faces like bursting pots, the quarry rang with the screams of dying men. If a timber prop buckled under the settling strata, Mir-Qabūs forbade his engineers to clear the drift, shouting: Let the dead stay in the hole! The stone hath eaten them, and stone is cheaper than bread! Drag forth the next monolith!

Yet the mountain would not suffer his arrogance. Every time the cyclopean blocks were stacked ten tiers high upon the fault-ledge, the purple eye of VaporSphere would rise; the tectonic bedrock would shudder with a subterranean roar; the unaligned joints would shear; and sixty cubits of dressed masonry would tumble down the precipice, grinding sixty masons to red grease in the talus below. Then would Mir-Qabūs foam at the mouth, his beard white with lime-dust, and he would command that ten master stonecutters be beheaded upon the ruined lintels, crying: Ye have put treason into the mortar! Ye have laid the courses with crooked eyes! By my hammer, I will build this tower though I must mortar every joint with the brains of your children!

Now there dwelt in a dry karst cavern three leagues beneath the quarry shelves, where a subterranean rill of icy glacial water broke through a stratum of deep azure lapis lazuli, a solitary stone-mystic and dervish whose name is inscribed as Ustad Mirak-the-Engraver (al-Naqqāsh). He was an avatar of the first tier, lean and quiet as a mountain hare, whose garments were gray with slate-flour and whose hands were hard as flint, yet in his eyes was the stillness of a deep cistern. For forty years he had practiced that high contemplative station which the ancient tongue calleth The-Dhikr-of-the-Burin—which is the sacred remembrance of the Divine Order (al-mīzān) through the rhythmic cutting of stone.

While the satraps screamed and the quarry-slaves died, Ustad Mirak sat upon a block of river-slate, whispering the ninety-nine names of the Everlasting Builder (al-Bārī). With every breath he drew inward, he set the point of his diamond-burin upon the stone; with every breath he breathed outward, his small horn mallet fell with a light, singing tap; and where the steel touched the rock, there unfolded not a crude gouge of wrath, but the flowing floral spirals of the islimi, the interlocking arches of the eightfold wind-rose, and the calligraphic verses of endurance, carved so true that an ant could walk the groove in total darkness without tumbling from the path. To Mirak, the stone was not a dead carcass to be hacked; it was a living scripture of Gaialilith, and every fracture was a word that must be answered with courtesy and measure.

Upon the night when the seven-and-twentieth tower of Mir-Qabūs collapsed into the abyss, the earth-mother Gaialilith stirred the deep limestone aquifers, and the water of the karst rill rose up to the ankles of the Ustad, glowing with a soft, subterranean sapphire light. And a voice spoke from the blue rock-face, sounding like the gentle grinding of river-pebbles beneath an alpine stream, saying: O Mirak, whose chisel never slipped upon the grain, arise. For the madman on the high ledge teareth the skin from my ribs with his iron wedges, and before Helios nailreth the noon again, the Great Cleaving Fault shall tear from the valley to the sky. Three thousand souls shall be swallowed into the black fire of the middle void, and their purple sparks shall be lost forever in the deep rifts. Take up the leather of the mountain goat; bind the lapis of the true star upon thy pulse; forge the steel of the diamond-point; and go thou up to the trembling cliff to teach the mallet how to pray.

Wherefore the Ustad arose, his fingers supple and untrembling, and went forth through the deep caves to assemble the chassis and the implements of the thirty-eighth station, according as the holy measure of naqqāshī was revealed to his inner eye.

First, he went unto the mountain shepherds who dwell among the dwarf junipers, and he took four square measures of the hide of an old mountain goat that had lived nine winters upon the vertical crags without once slipping upon the ice. This hide he skived with a crescent blade until it was three-sixty-fourths of an inch throughout, and he steeped it for seven days in a vat of acorn-gall liquor, green copperas, and the juice of wild walnut husks, until the leather became an earthen iron-gray—supple as silk, yet tough as boiled rawhide, capable of turning the point of a flint knife. Out of this leather he cut the fingerless half-gauntlets, shaping them to cover the wrist-joints, the palms, and the backs of the hands, yet leaving the five fingertips entirely bare, that the naked flesh might feel the pulse of the stone and the secret breath of the fissures.

Second, he lined the inner face of the gauntlets with a twill woven of golden river-flax and raw mountain silk, so that no sweat should scald the palm and no jarring mallet-stroke should raise a blister upon the wrist-bones. And upon the dorsal knuckle-bands and the forearm cuffs he mounted four plates of cold-hammered native copper, beaten upon an anvil of green jasper, stitching them to the gray hide with fine annealed brass wire in the likeness of geometric chisel-guidelines, compass-arcs, and the interlocking knots of structural balance.

Third, he descended into the deepest water-drift of the lapis mines, where the veins of blue lazurite are thick as a horse’s neck; and he quarried a circular disc of deep ultramarine lapis lazuli, three inches across and three-eighths of an inch thick, containing no veins of white calcite, but filled with a dense, shimmering dusting of golden pyrite stars like the midnight sky over the Pamirs. With diamond-powder slurries and a bow-drill he carved upon its outer face the high relief of an eight-pointed star, and within the star he carved an open draftsman’s compass crossed over a diamond-point burin. And upon the reverse of the lapis he ground out a circular nest; and therein he seated an uncut Tier 1 magic crystal that had fallen from the high ether in the first age—a stone possessing a deep, concentrated heart of indigo and burning amber—bedding it in an elastic mortar of clarified pine oleoresin, wild mastic gum tears, and the fine flour of dark slate sifted forty times through silk.

Fourth, he took a rod of crucible spring-steel, four inches in length, and forged it in his charcoal hearth to a sixty-degree diamond cutting point, quenching it in mutton fat and tempering it until it showed the pale straw hue of unyielding hardness; and he turned out a small mallet head from the dense black horn of a mountain ibex, binding its two faces with cold-forged brass hoops that it might never split; and he ground a burnishing stylus from banded river-agate, seating it in a brass socket.

Lastly, he turned upon his hand-lathe six-and-sixty beads from dense green river-jasper and three-and-thirty beads from the oily heartwood of the mountain boxwood tree, stringing them upon a cord of braided green silk, dividing them into three equal measures by cold-hammered brass spacer washers; and he hung this rosary, with the burin, the mallet, and the agate point, from the thongs of the gauntlets. And he ignited a smudge of mountain pine needles, mastic tears, and wild cliff-thyme, passing the gauntlets through the thick gray smoke forty-nine times while reciting the sacred names of stability, invoking Gaialilith as the mother of the enduring bedrock.

When Ustad Mirak drew these fingerless gauntlets over his wrists, behold! A great quietness fell upon his marrow.

His forearms, which had been weary from years of labor in the damp drifts, became light and solid as pillars of cedar. The trembling of his tendons ceased; the stinging stone-dust in his nostrils turned to the sweet balsamic fragrance of mountain pine and struck flint; and looking upon the rock-walls of his cavern, his Mind’s Eye opened like a lantern in a tomb. He saw no dark walls; he saw glowing lines of amber and deep sapphire running through the mountain—the living veins of the stone, the hidden water-pockets, the hollow vaults, and the great screaming fault-line three leagues above, where the rock was being torn apart by the weight of the satrap’s folly.

Every pace he took, the brass spacer washers and the horn mallet struck against the steel burin socket with a clear, metronomic clink-tap, clink-tap, ringing like a silver bell in an underground hall; and he walked up through the dark adits toward the sky, carrying nothing in his hands.

Now upon the high ledge of Koh-i-Lapis, the eleventh hour of Helios was burning, and the purple belly of VaporSphere hung so low that the hair on the necks of the quarrymen stood upright with the static hum of the heavens.

The Great Cleaving Fault was opening. A black crack, wide as an ox’s brisket, was running through the granite platform; the twenty-eighth tower of Mir-Qabūs was leaning six cubits out of plumb; the mortar was bursting from the seams in clouds of white dust; and the mountain beneath their feet was screaming like an iron kettle on a roaring hearth.

Three hundred guards stood with drawn swords, their eyes bloodshot with terror, while Mir-Qabūs, raving like a rabid hound, swung a colossal sledgehammer of iron with two hands, screaming at forty master masons who knelt in the rubble with their hands bound behind their backs: Ye dogs! Ye have brought the sorcery of the worms into my wall! I will smash your teeth into your gullets, and then I will cast your wives from the parapet, for this wall SHALL STAND though the world should crack like an egg!

He raised his iron hammer to crush the skull of the foremost mason.

Suddenly, a sound cut through the roar of the earthquake and the howling of the stratospheric wind.

Clink-tap. Clink-tap. Clink-tap.

It was not loud, yet it pierced the thunder as a diamond-point pierceth soft chalk.

The guards turned, their teeth chattering. Up the crumbling stone stairs of the ledge came Ustad Mirak.

He wore no helmet; he bore no shield. His gray goat-hide gauntlets were laced tightly to his wrists, the copper splints catching the yellow light of Helios, while the circular lapis lazuli medallion on the back of his right hand glowed with an incandescent, terrifying ultramarine fire that lit the dust-clouds like blue lightning.

Mir-Qabūs lowered his hammer, spitting blood from his bitten lip, and roared: What gray mole is this that creepeth out of the rubble? Art thou come to die with these traitors, thou ditch-scraper?

Ustad Mirak did not answer him with a word. For in the tradition of the sacred engravers, when the stone speaketh, the mouth of man must be shut.

He stepped directly to the center of the terrace, where the great black fissure was tearing the bedrock apart. He knelt upon his left knee. He took the diamond-point burin in his left hand, setting its straw-colored point into the very lip of the widening chasm; he raised the brass-banded horn mallet in his right; and out of the hollow of his chest, with the full weight of his lungs, he vocalized that ancient, shattering syllable of foundation: AL-KHAFQ!

CLANG-TINK!

The horn mallet struck the steel burin.

Behold! The Somatic Engraving Cadence unfolded across the ledge!

A blinding, circular shockwave of deep indigo-and-amber geometric light exploded from the burin’s tip, racing thirty paces in every direction! Where that sapphire light touched the rock, the violent seismic shaking instantly died away. The black crack stopped widening; the tumbling boulders froze upon the slopes as though caught in thick pitch; and a great, incandescent glyph of an eight-pointed star and compass crystallized into the solid granite, glowing like molten gold beneath the dust.

The three hundred guards and the tyrant Mir-Qabūs were lifted from their feet by the localized kinetic friction and hurled flat upon their bellies, their weapons flying from their hands, their limbs pinned to the flagstones as though twenty horsemen sat upon their shoulders. Only the forty bound masons remained upright, their ropes slipping from their wrists as the air filled with the clean, restorative fragrance of wild mountain thyme, pine resin, and cold rain-washed flint.

Yet Mir-Qabūs, possessing the stubbornness of a wild pig, fought against the kinetic field, roaring until the veins burst in his eyeballs. He dragged himself to his feet, seized his colossal iron hammer, and with a howling curse leaped toward the kneeling dervish, bringing the hundred-pound iron head down with all the fury of his shoulders to split Mirak’s skull into paste!

The kneeling Ustad did not lift his mallet to parry.

He pressed both gloved palms firmly against the stone floor before him.

Behold! The Silent Web of the Inscribed Bastion arose!

Without a whisper, an instantaneous dome of geometric sapphire lines and interlocking calligraphic scrolls flared twenty cubits around the artisan. When the colossal iron sledgehammer struck that kinetic boundary, five-and-twenty parts of its crushing momentum were instantly extinguished in a spray of fragrant indigo sparks! The remaining force was shunted downward through the copper splints and into the bedrock, dispersing harmlessly into the tectonic roots of the mountain. The great iron head of the hammer shattered into four blunt pieces, which dropped to the flagstones like dead sparrows, while the recoil snapped both wrists of the tyrant with the dry sound of breaking willow-boughs!

Mir-Qabūs fell upon his knees, howling with agony, cradling his limp and broken hands against his chest, staring at the dervish with eyes full of the black terror of a beast that hath seen the sun fall.

Then did Ustad Mirak rise to his feet.

He unclipped the loop of ninety-nine jasper and boxwood beads from his inner wrist, letting them hang over his left fingers. He picked up his burin and his horn mallet, and he walked to the leaning, ruined cornerstone of the twenty-eighth tower—a colossal block of dark porphyry that bore the crushing weight of the entire eastern face.

He began that holy, unhurried rite which the chronicle calleth The-Ninety-Nine-Cuts-of-the-Living-Rock.

He did not curse the tyrant. He began to pace a slow, dignified circle around the base of the tower, chanting in a deep, melodic throat-drone the ninety-nine attributes of the Enduring Foundation (al-Qayyūm). At every pace, his thumb moved a bead along the green silk cord; at every bead, his burin bit into the porphyry stone; and with every bite, his horn mallet delivered a crisp, rhythmic clink-tap that resonated with the brass spacer washers.

For ten continuous minutes the Ustad circled the tower, carving a continuous, flowing calligraphic ribbon of ninety-nine sacred characters into the load-bearing stone.

And with every character he incised, a miracle of structural knitting was wrought: the great black fissure running across the platform slowly drew together, its jagged lips locking like the teeth of an iron clasp; the crumbling lime-mortar in the joints turned to solid, fused quartz; the leaning tower straightened itself by three spans without a single stone falling; and the entire mountain mass of Koh-i-Lapis, which had been shivering like an ague-stricken dog, settled into an immovable, eternal equilibrium (al-mīzān).

When the ninety-ninth bead clicked against its washer, and the final flourish of the burin was completed, the Ustad laid his bare fingertips upon the chiseled line. The lapis lazuli medallion upon his hand flared once with a gentle, starlit glow, and the newly incised inscription sank into the porphyry, glowing with a soft, perpetual amber warmth that lit the terrace like a lamp of oil.

The three thousand quarry-slaves and masons fell upon their faces in the clean dust, weeping with a joy so great that the high cliffs echoed with their thanksgiving.

Mir-Qabūs lay in the shadow of the cornerstone, his broken wrists bleeding upon the stone he had cursed, weeping: O master of the iron hands! I thought that a tower was built by the terror of the whip and the heaviness of the hammer. But thy tiny point hath held that which forty thousand oxen could not drag, and thy ninety-nine cuts have bound the mountain that seventy kings could not tame. Chop off my head with thy chisel, for my works are dung and my name is a hissing among the people!

Ustad Mirak looked down upon him with the calm sorrow of an architect looking upon a wall that hath been built out of plumb.

He unfastened the agate burnishing stylus from his wrist and cast it into the lap of the broken satrap, saying these poorly translated words: Keep thy life, O heap of mud, but let thy hands never touch a hammer again until they have learned how to stroke a child’s forehead without bruising the skin. For the rule of the violent hand and the pride of the high tower are like a dry shale ledge upon the edge of the chasm—it looketh fierce and proud in the morning, yet when the purple wind bloweth, it slippeth into the void, leaving only dust and broken bones behind. But the station of the engraver (al-Naqqāsh) is like the deep vein of lapis in the heart of the world: it worketh in silence; it followeth the grain that Gaialilith hath laid down; and when it cutteth a line, it cutteth not to destroy the stone, but to reveal the eternal order that was hidden within its breast. He who heapeth stone in wrath shall be buried beneath his own rubble; but he who engraveth his works with the quiet balance of the dervish shall turn a crumbling cliff into a sanctuary of peace, and his line shall outlast the turning of the heavens.

And having delivered these words, Ustad Mirak did not climb the steps of the tower, nor did he take the gold coins that the satrap had stored in the rock-cut vaults. He took off the ninety-nine beads and the horn mallet, handing the gray goat-hide gauntlets into the keeping of the eldest master of the masons’ guild, commanding him to preserve them in an ark of cedar for that day when the shaking of VaporSphere should again make the mountains of Saṃsāra tremble. And he turned his face toward the deep caverns, barefoot, silent, and content, his bare fingertips brushing the rocks as he walked, reading the ancient thoughts of the earth-mother until the dark stone closed behind him and he was seen no more.

And throughout the turnings of the ages of Saṃsāra, the stone-carvers, sappers, and lapidary masters of the dervish orders did fashion working gauntlets after the likeness of that first pair, even unto the thirty-eighth iteration, that those tier 1 avatars who must labor upon unstable cliffs, in dark mine adits, or before the walls of crumbling bastions might wear the hand-wraps of the chiseled word, read the hidden fault-lines of the world, and anchor the shaking earth with the quiet grace of a single, unbroken stroke.

The moral of the story is that brute force, arrogant ambition, and the violent compulsion of unyielding iron are clumsy delusions that inevitably fracture the foundations they seek to master, whereas patient humility, deep reverence for the natural grain of creation, and the precise, rhythmic application of contemplative skill possess the enduring power to stabilize the most catastrophic upheavals, turn back the heaviest blows of destruction, and carve lasting monuments of structural harmony, safety, and peace out of the raw and trembling chaos of the world.

  • Mental and Spiritual Toll:
    • Initial Binding Ritual: Attuning to the gauntlets requires a successful Art/Craft (Masonry, Stone Carving, or Engraving), Archaeology, or Occult check during a one-hour seated contemplation while holding the diamond burin against an unworked stone, accompanied by the expenditure of 1 permanent Magic Point and an immediate Sanity check (0/1D3 Sanity loss) as the investigator harmonizes their manual pulse with the spiritual order of structural stability (al-Bārī).
    • Lithic Grounding: The metronomic acoustic clink-tap of the brass washers, combined with the grounding aroma of rain-washed slate and pine mastic, reduces any Sanity loss suffered from subterranean claustrophobia, earthquake panic, or structural collapse terror by 1 point (to a minimum of 0).
  • Passive Modifiers and Inherent Capabilities:
    • Mīzān of the Lithic Grain: When examining stone structures, mine adits, subterranean ruins, or mineral veins, the investigator receives one Bonus Die on Appraise, Archaeology, Art/Craft (Masonry/Stone Carving), Geology, and Spot Hidden rolls made to identify hidden cleavage planes, structural stress fractures, hollow cavities, secret stone doors, or mechanical pressure traps within 10 yards. In addition, the investigator can read any weather-eroded or defaced inscription by tracing bare fingertips over the stone grooves, and ignores movement penalties when walking across loose shale, broken rock, or mine debris.
    • Purity of the Lapidary Hand: The investigator gains complete immunity to manual blisters, hand tremors, repetitive strain injuries, and mallet recoil fatigue. Inhaling airborne silica, coal dust, or handling corrosive etching acids produces no lung irritation or chemical skin burns on the hands and forearms.
    • Resonant Chisel: Hand tools used to excavate or carve stone work 25% faster with 50% less acoustic noise. The investigator receives one Bonus Die on Dodge or Fighting (Brawl) rolls made to parry, avoid being tackled, or resist being knocked prone in physical scuffles.
  • Active Spells and Arcane Operations:
    • Somatic Engraving Cadence (The Chiseled Word):
      • Magic Point Cost: 2 Magic Points.
      • Casting Time: 1 combat round (executed by striking the diamond burin into a solid surface with the horn mallet while vocalizing the sharp syllable al-Khafq).
      • Resolution: Discharges an expanding shockwave of deep indigo-and-amber geometric light across a 10-yard radius (expanding to 20 yards if the true geographical name of the bedrock or quarry is spoken). Seismic tremors, cave-in vibrations, and minor floor collapses within the area are neutralized for 10 minutes. Hostile targets standing upon the affected floor must succeed on a Hard DEX or CON check or fall Prone and lose their movement action on their next turn; allies gain firm footing, ignoring unstable ground.
    • Silent Web of the Inscribed Bastion:
      • Magic Point Cost: 2 Magic Points.
      • Casting Time: 1 combat round (executed as an instantaneous, wordless reaction by pressing both gloved palms firmly against an adjacent stone wall, floor, or across the chest).
      • Resolution: Projects an instantaneous kinetic-mineral barrier across a 5-yard radius. When an explosion, catapult stone, or falling ceiling collapses onto the investigator or companions, incoming physical and concussive crushing damage is reduced by 25%, shunting the force safely into the bedrock foundation.
    • Rite of the Ninety-Nine Cuts:
      • Magic Point Cost: 5 Magic Points.
      • Sanity Cost: 1D3 Sanity points.
      • Casting Time: 10 minutes of uninterrupted throat-chanting and manual incision along a structural portal, pillar, or weapon blade while cycling the ninety-nine beads.
      • Resolution: Infuses the inscribed object for twenty-four hours. A fortified door, tunnel arch, or pillar doubles its structural integrity and becomes impervious to mundane picks, sledgehammers, and battering rams. Fortified melee weapons deal an extra 1D6 damage against stone constructs and earth-based entities. A Fumble (96–100) causes energetic backfire, inflicting 1D4 damage to the caster’s wrists as the lapis medallion overheats.
  • System Drawbacks and Operating Hazards:
    • Audible Ticking Footprint: The suspended brass spacer washers and horn mallet clink rhythmically against the burin socket with every stride. Any Stealth roll made to move silently suffers one Penalty Die unless the tools are lashed down with cloth (which suspends the armor bonus and all active powers while bound).
    • Catalytic Fragility: If an active spell roll results in a Fumble, the internal indigo-amber crystal fractures under energetic feedback. The investigator takes 1D3 points of physical shock damage to the wrist, and the gauntlets lose all magical properties until repaired by an artisan.

      • Resolution: An expanding pulse of deep indigo-and-amber geometric light floods a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on the point struck (expanding to a 60-foot radius if you speak the true geographical name of the bedrock or quarry). Each hostile creature standing on the ground in the area must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked Prone and have its speed reduced to 0 until the start of its next turn. Physical tremors, seismic shocks, and minor collapses in the area are suppressed for 10 minutes. Allies in the area ignore difficult terrain from rubble.
    • Silent Inscribed Bastion (1 Charge):
      • Action Economy: 1 Reaction (taken when you or an ally within 15 feet takes bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage from a cave-in, falling object, explosion, or siege attack).
      • Operational Method: You press both gloved palms firmly against an adjacent solid surface or across your chest.
      • Resolution: An instantaneous kinetic-mineral barrier ripples outward. The triggering damage is reduced by 25% (or all affected targets gain resistance to the triggering damage, whichever reduces more damage), safely shunting the concussive force into the surrounding foundations.
    • Rite of the Ninety-Nine Cuts (2 Charges):
      • Action Economy: 10-Minute Ritual.
      • Operational Method: You carve calligraphic glyphs along one doorway, up to four structural pillars, or two melee weapons while maintaining continuous throat-chanting and cycling the ninety-nine beads.
      • Resolution: Fortified pillars or portals double their damage threshold and AC, becoming immune to nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage for 24 hours. Fortified melee weapons deal an extra 1d8 bludgeoning or slashing damage against constructs and earth elementals for 24 hours.
  • Drawbacks and Complications:
    • Auditory Clatter: The suspended brass spacer washers and horn mallet click rhythmically against the burin socket with every stride. You have disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to move quietly, unless you spend 1 minute securing the tools with cloth (which suspends the AC bonus and all active features while bound).
    • Conspicuous Radiance: When activated, the lapis lazuli medallion sheds dim indigo light in a 10-foot radius, making it impossible to remain hidden in unlit areas.

Knave (2nd Edition)

Lithic Sapper’s Gauntlets

  • Item Classification and Gear Logistics:
    • Item Category: Worn Relic / Artisan’s Tool (Hands Slot).
    • Inventory Slots: Occupies 1 Item Slot.
    • Armor Defense: Provides +1 Armor Defense to the wearer’s total Armor value, as the reinforced goat hide and cold-hammered copper splints protect the hands, wrists, and forearms.
    • Durability and Quality: Possesses 3 Quality points. If the wearer suffers a critical hit targeting the arms or a crushing blow from a cave-in, falling portcullis, or rolling boulder trap, they may choose to sacrifice 1 Quality point from the gauntlets to absorb 5 points of incoming damage. At 0 Quality, the lapis lazuli medallion splits along its pyrite lines and the leather seams tear, rendering the relic non-functional until repaired by an armorer or mason during downtime.
  • Inherent Passive Benefits:
    • Master Mason’s Eye: The wearer automatically detects secret stone doors, unstable cavern ceilings, and mechanical stone pressure plates within near range. The wearer can read any eroded, weathered, or defaced stone inscription simply by tracing their bare fingertips over the grooves.
    • Unshakable Grip & Purity: The wearer is completely immune to manual hand fatigue, blisters, and lung irritation from breathing choking stone dust or caustic acid vapors. The wearer cannot be disarmed of hand tools or weapons, and cannot be knocked off balance while standing on loose scree or broken rubble.
    • Resonant Strike: Breaching or carving stone walls takes 25% less time and produces half the acoustic noise of standard tools.
  • Relic Powers and Daily Exploits:
    • The Anchoring Glyph (1/Day):
      • Action Economy: 1 Action.
      • Operational Method: The wearer strikes the diamond burin into a solid stone surface with the horn mallet and vocalizes al-Khafq.
      • Resolution: A 30-foot shockwave of indigo light stabilizes the ground, neutralizing active tremors and cave-in rumbles. All hostile creatures standing on the stone floor within near range must make a DEX save or fall prone and have their movement reduced to 0 for 1 round.
    • Inscribed Bastion (1/Day):
      • Action Economy: 1 Reaction (triggered when an explosion, catapult boulder, or ceiling collapse hits the bearer or companions).
      • Operational Method: The wearer presses both gloved palms firmly against the floor or walls.
      • Resolution: Absorbs up to 10 points of damage from the triggering explosion, falling rocks, or crushing ceiling for the wearer and adjacent companions, channeling the concussive force into the ground.
    • The Ninety-Nine Cuts (1/Day):
      • Action Economy: 1 Exploration Turn (10 minutes).
      • Operational Method: The wearer chants liturgical verses while cycling the ninety-nine beads and carving glyphs around a doorway, pillar, or weapon.
      • Resolution: For 1 full day, the fortified doorway or support pillar cannot be broken or breached by mundane picks, axes, or battering rams. Alternatively, imbues up to two weapons to deal +5 damage against stone constructs, animated statues, and earth elementals for 1 day.
  • System Drawback:
    • Audible Clinking: The brass spacer washers and horn mallet strike the burin socket with every stride. Any attempt to sneak or move silently while wearing the unrestrained gauntlets automatically fails or suffers disadvantage at the referee’s discretion. Tying down the tools silences the clinking, but suspends the +1 Armor Defense bonus and all daily relic powers until untied.

Fate Core and Fate Condensed

The Lithic Gauntlets of the Chiseled Word

  • Core Aspect:
    • Name: Lithic Gauntlets of the Chiseled Word
    • Description: A pair of articulated fingerless half-gauntlets and forearm wraps made from iron-gray mountain goat hide vegetable-tanned in acorn gall and copperas, lined with golden flax and mulberry silk twill. The dorsal knuckle bands and wrist cuffs are reinforced with cold-hammered native copper splints and annealed brass wire embroidered in geometric chisel guidelines. On the dominant hand’s cuff rests a circular medallion of deep azure Badakhshan lapis lazuli flecked with golden pyrite, carved in relief with an eight-pointed star, open compass, and crossed diamond burin. Concealed beneath the stone is an uncut Tier 1 magic crystal glowing with an indigo-and-amber core, bedded in mountain pine oleoresin, mastic gum, and dark slate dust. Suspended from the right wrist are a four-inch hardened tool-steel diamond-point burin and a brass-banded horn mallet; the left wrist houses an agate burnishing stylus and an unbroken loop of ninety-nine green jasper and mountain boxwood beads divided into three measures by cold-forged brass spacer washers that click rhythmically with movement.
  • Invocation and Compel Dynamics:
    • Invoking the Aspect: A character may spend a Fate Point (or invoke freely) when assessing the structural integrity of stone foundations, identifying hidden cleavage lines or secret masonry doors, carving stone with haste and precision, stabilizing ground against tremors, absorbing falling rock or concussive crushing force, and bracing against physical displacement.
    • Compelling the Aspect: The gamemaster may offer a Fate Point to compel this aspect when the rhythmic clinking of the brass spacer washers against the steel burin socket alerts alert guards or cavern predators, when the bright indigo-amber glow of the lapis medallion gives away the bearer’s position in darkness, or when the solemn contemplative code of the sacred stonecutter (naqqāshī) obligates the character to halt and reinforce a collapsing structure to protect bystanders.
  • Protective Value and Stunts:
    • Lithic Deflection Guard:
      • Mechanics: The reinforced copper splints and dense leather chassis provide Armor:1 against physical melee strikes, claw rakes, and flying rock splinters targeting the hands, wrists, and forearms, as well as against blunt falling debris.
    • Purity of the Lapidary Hand:
      • Mechanics: The wearer is completely immune to manual hand tremors, repetitive strain injuries, palm blisters, and mallet recoil fatigue. Inhaling airborne rock dust or handling caustic mineral acids causes no respiratory distress or chemical burns to the hands and arms.
    • Mīzān of the Lithic Grain:
      • Mechanics: The character gains a +2 bonus to Notice, Crafts, or Investigate when inspecting stone masonry, cave walls, mineral veins, or petroglyphs to detect stress fractures, hollow chambers, structural traps, secret doors, or eroded inscriptions within thirty feet. In addition, the character ignores movement penalties caused by difficult ground like scree, loose shale, or mine rubble.
    • Resonant Chisel:
      • Mechanics: The character carves, trenches, or breaches stone surfaces in 25% less time with 50% less acoustic noise. The character gains a +2 bonus to Physique or Athletics to resist being Disarmed, Tripped, Shoved, or knocked prone.
    • Somatic Engraving Cadence (The Chiseled Word):
      • Mechanics: Once per scene, the character may spend an action to strike the diamond burin into a solid floor with the mallet while vocalizing the syllable al-Khafq, rolling Crafts against Mediocre (+0) difficulty. On a success, they place the situation aspect Anchored Lithic Foundation on the zone with one free invoke (two on a style). Hostile NPCs standing on the ground must overcome a Fair (+2) Athletics or Physique obstacle or gain the temporary aspect Knocked Flat and Rooted. Active seismic shocks and floor collapses in the zone are neutralized for the rest of the scene. If the character speaks the true geographical name of the bedrock or quarry, this effect expands into an adjacent zone.
    • Silent Web of the Inscribed Bastion:
      • Mechanics: Once per scene, when the character or allies in the same zone are subjected to physical stress from a ceiling collapse, catapult stone, or explosive blast, the character may spend a Fate Point and press both gloved palms firmly against the floor or walls as an immediate reaction. This creates a defensive kinetic barrier with two free invokes, reducing the incoming stress of the triggering event by 2 shifts for all targets in that zone.
    • Rite of the Ninety-Nine Cuts:
      • Mechanics: By maintaining ten minutes of continuous throat-chanting while cycling the ninety-nine beads and carving calligraphic characters into a structural portal, pillar, or up to two melee weapons, the character rolls Crafts with a +2 bonus. On a success, they place the situation aspect Permanent Talismanic Seal with two free invokes. A fortified door or pillar gains Armor:2 against siege tools and cannot be breached by mundane picks for twenty-four hours; fortified weapons inflict +2 shifts of physical stress when striking earth elementals, stone constructs, or masonry.
  • System Drawback:
    • Audible Clink: The brass spacer washers clink continuously against the steel burin socket during rapid movement. Any Stealth roll made to move quietly suffers an automatic -2 penalty unless the implements are tied down with cloth (which suspends the armor bonus and all active stunts while bound).

Numenera & Cypher System

Vambraces of the Chiseled Word

  • Artifact Classification and Technical Profile:
    • Level: 3 (variable 1d6 or fixed at Level 3).
    • Form Factor: A pair of articulated fingerless half-gauntlets constructed from dense, iron-gray treated leather and golden flax-silk lining, mounted with cold-hammered copper splints and brass guideline wire. The dominant wrist features a circular lapis-lazuli-like mineral disc flecked with golden conductive traces, housing an indigo-amber photonic catalyst bedded in mastic resin and slate powder. Suspended from the cuffs are a steel diamond-point stylus, a composite horn-and-brass mallet, an agate burnisher, and ninety-nine composite calculation beads separated by brass spacer rings.
    • Depletion: 1 in 1d20 (checked only upon activating active device functions).
  • Inherent Passive Benefits:
    • Upper Forearm Armor: Provides +1 to Armor against physical melee attacks targeting the hands and arms, as well as against blunt falling debris and cave-in impacts.
    • Purity of the Lapidary Hand: The wearer gains an asset (reducing task difficulty by one step) on all Might defense rolls against caustic mineral vapors, toxic silica dust, and corrosive stone-etching acids. The wearer is immune to manual muscle fatigue and hand strain.
    • Mīzān Lithic Telemetry: The gauntlets project an intuitive architectural readout into the user’s mind. The wearer gains an asset on all Intellect tasks involving geology, masonry, identifying structural flaws, locating secret doors, detecting mechanical stone traps, or deciphering eroded inscriptions up to short range (50 feet). In addition, the wearer ignores movement penalties across broken scree, mine rubble, and fractured rock.
    • Resonant Chisel: The wearer cuts, breaches, or carves through stone and masonry in 25% less time with 50% less acoustic noise. The wearer gains an asset on Might and Speed defense tasks to resist being disarmed, tripped, or knocked down.
  • Active Device Functions:
    • Somatic Engraving Cadence (The Chiseled Word):
      • Action: One action.
      • Effect: The user strikes the diamond stylus into the floor with the horn mallet while speaking the sharp vocal command al-Khafq, releasing an expanding indigo-amber shockwave across short range (50 feet). Active ground tremors and structural collapsing rumbles in the area are suppressed for ten minutes. Hostile targets standing on the connected floor must succeed on a Speed defense roll or be knocked prone and immobilized for one round. Allies gain firm footing. Speaking the true bedrock name expands the range to long range (100 feet). Roll for Depletion upon activation.
    • Silent Inscribed Bastion:
      • Action: Immediate reaction (taken when the wearer or an adjacent ally is struck by a cave-in, falling boulder, or explosive blast).
      • Effect: Pressing both gloved palms firmly against an adjacent surface generates an instantaneous kinetic barrier across immediate range (10 feet). Incoming crushing or blast damage from the triggering event is reduced by 3 points for all affected targets, safely shunting the shock into the surrounding foundation. Roll for Depletion upon activation.
    • Rite of the Ninety-Nine Cuts:
      • Action: Ten minutes of sustained harmonic chanting while cycling the calculation beads and carving calligraphic lines into a portal, support pillar, or up to two weapons.
      • Effect: The device infuses the target for twenty-four hours. A fortified portal or pillar has its effective level increased by 2, doubling its structural integrity and rendering it immune to mundane breaching tools. Fortified weapons deal 2 additional points of damage when striking stone constructs, animated statues, or earth-based entities. Roll for Depletion upon completion of the rite.
  • Complications and GM Intrusions:
    • Audible Footprint: The brass spacer rings clink against the tool sockets during movement, increasing the difficulty of tasks to move silently by one step.
    • GM Intrusion: A violent lithic feedback surge causes the internal crystal to overheat along its mineral veins, dealing 3 points of ambient damage directly to the user’s hands and wrists, jarring their grip, and rendering the device inert for one hour.

      • Activation Time: 1 reaction.
      • Operational Effect: Deploys an instantaneous kinetic dampening field across a 5-meter radius.
      • Resolution: Reduces incoming damage from explosions, falling masonry, or ceiling collapses by 25% (or a flat -3 damage reduction) for the wearer and adjacent companions, safely shunting the concussive energy into the bedrock foundations.
    • Rite of the Ninety-Nine Cuts:
      • Technical / Psionic Requirement: Requires 3 points of temporary PSI (or a Difficult [10+] Engineer check) and 10 minutes of uninterrupted throat-recitation while cycling the beads and incising glyphs into a doorway, pillar, or weapon.
      • Operational Effect: Fortifies the inscribed object for 24 hours. A fortified portal or support beam doubles its structural Armor and Hull/Structure value against kinetic breach; fortified melee weapons deal +1D damage against stone, concrete, and mechanical constructs.
  • System Complications and Physical Drawbacks:
    • Inescapable Acoustic Signature: The suspended brass spacer washers and mallet clink rhythmically against the burin socket with physical movement. The wearer suffers an automatic DM-2 penalty to all Stealth checks involving quiet movement unless the tools are lashed down with cloth.
    • Sensor Traceability: The ambient indigo-amber bio-resonance emitted by the internal crystal can be detected by seismic and density sensors at twice normal detection range.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (Fourth Edition)

The Lithic Gauntlets of Master Mirak

  • Item Header and Physical Metrics:
    • Item Classification: Enchanted Relic / Artisan Focus (Hands Slot / Vambraces).
    • Encumbrance: 1.
    • Availability: Exotic (originating from eastern mountain hospices, Cathayan stonecutters, and Silk Road sapping lodges).
    • Qualities: Fine, Focus (Lore of Metal / Chamon or Earthly Craftsmanship).
    • Armor Points: 1 AP on Arms (covering Hands, Wrists, and Forearms); Durability 3.
    • Physical Composition: Articulated fingerless half-gauntlets of vegetable-tanned mountain goat hide lined with golden flax and raw mulberry silk, reinforced with cold-hammered copper splints and brass guideline embroidery. Mounts a three-inch circular medallion of Badakhshan lapis lazuli carved in relief with an eight-pointed star, open compass, and crossed diamond burin, containing an uncut indigo-amber realm-stone catalyst bedded in pine resin, mastic, and slate dust. Rigged with a four-inch diamond-point tool steel burin, an ibex-horn mallet, an agate burnishing stylus, and ninety-nine jasper and boxwood beads separated by brass spacer washers.
  • Inherent Passive Benefits:
    • Lithic Deflection Guard: Provides 1 Armor Point to the Arms hit location (covering the hands, wrists, and forearms), helping to turn aside cutting blades, animal claws, and flying rock splinters.
    • Purity of the Lapidary Hand: The wearer is completely immune to manual fatigue, blisters, and muscle strain from continuous stonework. Inhaling mineral dust or contact with etching acids cannot inflict the Distracted or Poisoned conditions.
    • Mīzān of the Lithic Grain: The wearer gains a +1 SL bonus on Trade (Masonry, Stone Carving, Engraving), Perception, and Lore (Geology or Architecture) tests to detect fault lines, secret stone doors, structural collapse hazards, and mechanical traps within 10 yards. The wearer can read eroded or defaced inscriptions by touch and ignores movement penalties across loose scree, rubble, and broken stone.
    • Resonant Chisel: Cuts stone 25% faster with 50% less acoustic noise. The character gains a +10% bonus to resist Opposed Strength tests made to Disarm, Shove, or Trip them.
  • Active Rites and Spells:
    • Somatic Engraving Cadence:
      • Action Economy: 1 Action.
      • Operational Method: The character strikes the diamond burin into solid stone with the horn mallet while vocalizing the sharp syllable al-Khafq.
      • Resolution: Discharges a soothing, luminous shockwave of indigo light across a 10-yard radius. Ground tremors, settling vibrations, and ceiling creaks within the area are quelled for 10 minutes. Hostile characters standing on the ground must pass a Challenging (+0) Dodge or Athletics test or gain the Prone condition and lose their Move on their next turn due to kinetic grounding. Allies gain sure footing, ignoring rubble. Speaking the true bedrock or quarry name expands the radius to 20 yards.
    • Silent Web of the Inscribed Bastion:
      • Action Economy: 1 Reaction (triggered when struck by falling rocks, ceiling collapses, artillery stones, or explosive blasts).
      • Operational Method: The character presses both gloved palms firmly against an adjacent stone wall or floor.
      • Resolution: An instantaneous kinetic-mineral ward ripples outward across 4 yards. The triggering blast or crushing damage is reduced by 25% (or a flat -3 Damage reduction), safely shunting the concussive force into the surrounding foundations.
    • Rite of the Ninety-Nine Cuts:
      • Action Economy: Extended Ritual requiring 10 uninterrupted minutes of circular pacing and throat-recitation while sliding the ninety-nine beads and incising glyphs into a doorway, pillar, or weapon.
      • Operational Method: The character sings liturgical verses of structural endurance.
      • Resolution: The character makes an Average (+20) Channelling test or an Extended Trade (Masonry) test (+2 SL). On a success, the target is fortified for 24 hours. A fortified doorway or support pillar doubles its AP and Damage Threshold against siege or splitting attacks, becoming impervious to mundane picks. Imbues up to two melee weapons to deal +2 Damage and gain the Impact quality against stone constructs, animated statues, and earth elementals.
  • System Drawbacks and Inherent Weaknesses:
    • Audible Rhythm: The brass spacer washers and mallet clink rhythmically against the burin socket with every stride. The character suffers a -20% penalty to all Stealth (Rural or Urban) tests made to move quietly unless the tools are wrapped with cloth (which suspends the AP bonus and all active magical abilities while bound).
    • Catalyst Overload Risk: If the gauntlets suffer 3 points of damage from a critical strike targeting the arms, or if the user suffers a Major Miscast while channeling through the focus, roll 1d10. On a result of 1, the lapis lazuli medallion cracks along its pyrite lines, dealing 1 Wound directly to the wearer’s wrist (ignoring Toughness) and rendering all magical qualities inert until repaired by an artisan.
