Sufism 40 of the Engraced Station

Lore

Across the fractured island plateaus and courtly mountain enclaves of Saṃsāra, where the unyielding light of Helios fixes noon at the eleventh hour and the gravitational churn of VaporSphere stirs both the earth and the passions of mortals, survival often demands more than iron and pickaxes. In the mountain redoubts of the Pamir and Badakhshan regions, where ancient kings and wandering ascetics met under low stone arches, there arose the high discipline of adab—the spiritual cultivation of refined dignity, exquisite courtesy, and divine grace.

To the Sufi masters and courtly dervishes of these high valleys, true power lay not in rough contention or abrasive resistance, but in “engracing”: the deliberate act of elevating an environment, a meeting, or one’s own physical vessel into a condition of frictionless spiritual nobility and unshakeable poise. An engraced avatar walks through jagged scree, courtly treachery, and howling tempests without breaking the rhythm of their breath or staining the hem of their mantle.

Sufism 40 of the Engraced Station was woven to serve as an indispensable focus for tier 1 avatars whose roleplay centers on presence, diplomatic mediation, serene bearing, and the sanctification of motion. Commemorating the forty days of contemplative retreat (chilla) wherein the soul purges all crude haste, this mantle allows the bearer to project an aura of effortless authority, steady the hearts of panicking companions, deflect coarse physical violence through fluid evasion, and neutralize the hostility of beasts and sovereign courts alike.

Description

Sufism 40 of the Engraced Station is a sweeping, tailored dervish mantle and ceremonial stole designed to drape gracefully across the shoulders, chest, and upper back, fastened at the collarbone by a filigree clasp of beaten native silver. The body of the mantle is woven from two-ply fleece of high-altitude mountain sheep blended with raw mulberry silk and spun golden flax, kettle-dyed a lustrous, sun-bleached saffron and deep cream using saffron stigmas, dried pomegranate rinds, and crushed wild turmeric. The inner facing is lined with fine, water-retted Samarkand linen that has been cold-steeped in an aromatic infusion of wild Damask rosewater, dried sandalwood flakes, and mountain cedar oil, releasing a subtle, cooling fragrance whenever the fabric shifts. Across the shoulders and down both frontal lappets, fine silver thread is embroidered in calligraphic flourishes and interlocking floral vines (islimi) that map the flow of divine benevolence.

Resting over the upper sternum beneath the silver clasp is a flat, lozenge-shaped pectoral medallion cut from natural Badakhshan carnelian, measuring three inches across and three-eighths of an inch thick. The face of the carnelian is engraved with the open-petaled blossom of a forty-petaled desert rose surrounded by rhythmic geometric strapwork. Concealed within a hollowed nest on the reverse side of the carnelian is an uncut, coin-sized tier 1 magic crystal glowing with a soft, warm peach-and-amber heart, bedded securely in a resilient paste of clarified beeswax, gum benzoin, and fine river-pearl dust.

Suspended from reinforced silver-thread loops along the right lapel are a slender, five-inch silver stylus (used to scribe diplomatic accords and poetic verses) and a small, stoppered rock-crystal vial filled with concentrated rose-attar. Hanging from the left lapel is a polished silver counter-weight bell tuned to a sweet, lingering acoustic tone, paired with an unbroken loop of ninety-nine beads lathe-turned from aged wild olive wood and fragrant apricot heartwood, divided into three equal sections of thirty-three by cold-hammered silver spacing washers. As the avatar moves through crowded halls or across rugged roads, the silver washers tap against the counter-weight bell with an exquisite, whispering ting-chime, setting a cadence that calms racing pulses and imparts an undeniable air of sacred nobility to every gesture.

Detailed Stats

  • Item Classification and Tier Rank:
    • Tier Rank: Tier 1 item.
    • Rarity Rating: Common rarity.
    • Operational Classification: Worn focus and engracing mantle.
  • Specific Slot Allocation:
    • Designated Slot: Shoulders Slot.
    • Slot Consumption: Consumes exactly one gear slot of the nineteen allowable worn gear slots for a tier 1 avatar.
    • Integration Form Factor: Drapes naturally over the shoulders, upper back, and chest; can be worn comfortably over light armor, leather tunics, or courtly robes without impeding arm mobility, spellcasting somatic components, or weapon draws.
  • Defensive Value:
    • Armor Check (AC) Modifier: Grants a +1 Armor Check bonus to the wearer.
    • Mechanical Boundary Compliance: Complies strictly with the structural limitation restricting defensive bonuses to no more than 3 Armor Check points per item tier level.
  • Structural Durability and Item Hit Points:
    • Resilience Score: Base resilience rating of 10.
    • Total Item Hit Points Formula: Maximum item hit points equal the wearing avatar’s maximum health points plus 10 (calculated as base resilience 10 multiplied by tier level 1).
    • Degradation Mechanics: If subjected to direct physical sunder attacks, crushing impacts, or acid immersion, the mantle becomes broken and inert if reduced to half its total hit point pool or lower. If reduced to zero hit points, the silk-wool weave shreds, the carnelian medallion shatters, and the tier 1 crystal fractures into non-magical gray ash.
    • Attunement Ward: When struck while attuned, a successful attack unattunes the item rather than dealing direct damage to its hit points; subsequent hits to the unattuned mantle deal normal damage against its hit point pool. Damaged states must be repaired before re-attunement can occur.
  • Attunement Requirements and Handling:
    • Attunement Method: Simple Attunement.
    • Time Requirement: Requires one continuous minute of quiet, seated meditation while breathing in measured four-fold cycles, smoothing the fabric over the shoulders and reciting the contemplative formulas of courtesy (adab) to harmonize the crystal matrix with the wearer’s personal mana flow.
    • Capacity Usage: Occupies one of the avatar’s ten allowable active attuned item slots.
    • Single Bearer Bond: Can be bonded to only one avatar at a time; attempts by another creature to attune immediately break the existing bond, causing the original bearer to feel a sudden loss of warmth and a cold, leaden weight across the shoulders.
  • Valuation and Mercantile Context:
    • Suggested Baseline Value: 40 to 55 Silver pieces (equivalent to 80 to 110 nickels, or 4 to 5.5 gold coins).
    • Economic Dynamics: Operates under a sellers’ market with buyer beware principles. In administrative capitals, diplomatic courts, monastic sanctuaries, and high-end bazaar districts, it commands high demand and top value; in desolate sapping camps or deep-drift mines, utilitarian miners value it primarily as a warm, water-resistant wool-and-silk wrap.

Multiple Passives Magic

  • Passive 1: Mīzān of the Engraced Station (Aura of Composure):
    • While the mantle is attuned and worn, the embedded peach-amber crystal projects an intuitive field of social and somatic equilibrium into the avatar’s Mind’s Eye.
    • When observing social interactions, diplomatic standoffs, courtly assemblies, or hostile standoffs, the user perceives glowing amber and rose vectors outlining emotional volatility, deceitful intent, social rank dynamics, and breaches of courtesy up to thirty feet away.
    • The avatar gains an inherent advantage on all skill checks involving Diplomacy, Etiquette, Persuasion, Insight, Performance, and Poise under pressure. In addition, the avatar’s movement is physically engraced: they ignore non-magical movement penalties caused by uneven flagstones, scattered debris, slick banquet floors, or shallow mud, gliding across unstable surfaces with unbroken balance.
  • Passive 2: Purity of the Scented Hem (Perfume of Sanctity):
    • The continuous micro-vibration of the carnelian medallion and the herbal rose-cedar lining generates an invisible, repelling aura across a two-foot radius around the shoulders, torso, and hem.
    • The avatar gains complete immunity to repulsive environmental odors, the sickening stench of sewer damp, and nausea caused by rotting organic matter or offal.
    • Mud, grime, grease, blood splatters, and common staining fluids are passively repelled by the fabric, beading and rolling off the mantle to leave the saffron-cream weave pristine.
  • Passive 3: Effortless Demeanor (Kinetic Deflection):
    • Kinetic contact between the mantle’s silver embroidery and incoming physical forces aligns incoming momentum with the natural turning grace of the avatar’s posture.
    • The avatar gains advantage on checks made to resist being shoved, tripped, grappled, or knocked prone by physical means.
    • Physical strikes targeting the wearer’s upper torso or neck glance off the reinforced silk-wool weave with 50% less concussive shock, converting potential bone-jarring blows into smooth, rotational displacement.

Multiple Activable Magics

  • Activable Magic 1: Somatic Engracing Cadence (The Scented Salaam):
    • Action Cost: Consumes exactly one action during the avatar’s turn.
    • Casting Modality: Somatic casting lasting less than six seconds, requiring the avatar to bring their right hand across the heart, touch the carnelian medallion, and vocalize a single, melodic greeting of peace (al-Salām).
    • Operational Effect: The tier 1 crystal discharges an expanding, luminous pulse of warm rose-and-amber light across a 30-foot radius.
    • Functional Utility: Overt hostility and violent bloodlust within the perimeter are immediately dampened for ten minutes. Hostile creatures must make a composure or Will saving throw; on a failure, they sheath drawn blades, cease brawling, and cannot initiate unprovoked violence unless attacked first. Allies within the radius have their hearts steadied, immediately ending active fear, panic, or confusion conditions.
    • True Name Interaction: If the formal title or true name of the local sovereign, territory, or clan elder is spoken during casting, the radius of the calming light expands from 30 feet to 60 feet.
  • Activable Magic 2: Silent Web of the Dignified Mantle:
    • Action Cost: Consumes exactly one action during the avatar’s turn, or can be triggered as an immediate reaction to an incoming physical or verbal assault.
    • Casting Modality: Silent casting executed entirely without vocalization, triggered by directed mental focus and a sharp, two-handed downward press upon the lapels of the mantle.
    • Operational Effect: Operating under the standard silent casting reduction of 25% potency, the mantle projects an instantaneous kinetic-spiritual dampening field across a 20-foot radius centered on the avatar.
    • Tactical Application: When an explosion, barrage of crossbow bolts, psychic shockwave, or crashing structural beam threatens the avatar and their companions, the barrier absorbs 25% of the incoming damage, safely parting the destructive force around the group like water around an aristocratic prow.
  • Activable Magic 3: Ritual Chanting of the Sacred Station (The Fortyfold Courtesies):
    • Action Cost: Consumes one action to initiate, followed by continuous execution for greater than six seconds (ten continuous minutes), classifying the casting fully as a Ritual.
    • Casting Modality: Ritual casting requiring the avatar to walk a slow, dignified circle around an assembly, camp, or banquet hall while maintaining continuous throat-recitation of the attributes of benevolence, sliding the ninety-nine olive-wood beads through their fingers.
    • Operational Effect: Gaining the full ritual chanting benefit of up to a +25% increase in magical potency, the rite sanctifies the bounded space (up to a 50-foot enclosure) and up to twelve designated individuals for twenty-four hours.
    • Structural Fortification: Those blessed by the station gain double their base morale threshold, complete immunity to mundane intimidation, and an unshakeable sense of dignified serenity, while lies, poisonings, and acts of sudden treachery attempted within the sanctuary suffer an immediate -25% penalty to execution and concealment.
    • Concentration Risk: Taking damage during the chant forces an immediate saving throw to avoid breaking the rhythmic cadence, which collapses the sanctified field before the spiritual bonds lock into place.

Commercial Channels, Mercantile Establishments, and Regional Valuation of Sufism 40 of the Engraced Station

  • Monastic Khānaqāhs, Dervish Hospices, and Mountain Sanctuary Scriptoria:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Across the high alpine valleys, terraced river plateaus, and courtly enclaves of Saṃsāra, commerce involving contemplative and diplomatic vestments is rooted in the serene grounds of khānaqāhs (Sufi hospices and spiritual retreats) and mountain scriptoria. Often hewn from pale limestone or built with whitewashed mudbrick, these compounds surround quiet central courtyards filled with blooming Damask rosebushes, irrigated herb beds, and weeping willows. The sales antechambers feature low, polished walnut bookstands, woven kilims, and open stone arches admitting the gentle breeze of the high passes. The atmosphere is quiet, contemplative, and cool, smelling richly of dried rose petals, burning sandalwood, sweet almond oil, and freshly ironed linen, punctuated only by the soft murmur of copyists scribing illuminated scrolls in adjacent galleries.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Purchasing Sufism 40 of the Engraced Station within a dervish hospice is an exercise in etiquette and spiritual bearing (adab). The presiding elder pir or sheikh greets the visitor with ceremonial mint tea, observing their vocal cadence, bodily posture, and conversational restraint. Through the Mind’s Eye, the elder examines the prospective buyer’s tier rating and personal mana flow to ensure their energetic reservoir is settled enough to sustain attunement without causing disharmonious feedback in the carnelian medallion. Transactions are settled in weight-verified silver coinage, electrum bars, or calligraphy-inscribed promissory notes endorsed by respected monastic assemblies.
    • Purchasing Cost: Because the foundational materials—mountain sheep’s fleece, raw mulberry silk, high-altitude linen, Badakhshan carnelian, and native silver—are produced, refined, and woven within local monastic networks, retail pricing remains stable. In these hospice retreats, the mantle sells for 40 to 55 silver pieces (equivalent to 80 to 110 nickels, or 4 to 5.5 gold coins). Avatars presenting a verified token of an allied dervish order, monastic hospice alliance, or the Diplomatic Envoys’ Guild receive the standard faction discount of 10% multiplied by their tier (a 10% reduction for a tier 1 avatar), bringing the purchase price to between 36 and 49.5 silver pieces.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: When an avatar sells a mantle back to a khānaqāh, the sanctuary’s master weaver and archivist conduct a rigorous assessment. They examine the carnelian medallion via the Mind’s Eye to confirm the Tier 1 crystal retains its warm peach-and-amber heart without micro-fractures, test the silver counter-weight bell for true acoustic tone, and ensure the silk-wool weave has absorbed no lingering spiritual stains or necrotic residue. In accordance with Saṃsāra’s merchant baseline, the hospice pays 10% of the item’s intrinsic value multiplied by the seller’s character tier (yielding a 10% payout for a tier 1 avatar, or 4 to 5.5 silver pieces). The payout is recorded in illuminated vellum ledgers and wired to the seller’s World Bank account, minus the standard 1% processing fee rounded up to the nearest copper.
  • Metropolitan Diplomatic Chanceries and High Silk Vestment Salons:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Within the fortified capitals, noble treaty ports, and imperial palatial districts of central island states, courtly vestments are bought and sold within premier diplomatic chanceries and luxury silk salons. Located on marble avenues overlooking monumental civic plazas, these salons are adorned with glazed azure tilework, cedar-paneled display walls, and heavy silk velvet draperies. The mantle is draped upon cedar mannequins set upon polished alabaster plinths beneath sparkling lead-glass chandeliers. Clerks dressed in tailored brocade cater to royal ambassadors, court heralds, noble courtiers, and elite arbiters seeking regalia of state.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Entering an imperial salon requires presenting formal credentials of rank, an embassy commission, or undergoing an immediate credit verification via the Mind’s Eye to confirm an active World Bank standing. The mantle is presented in a velvet-lined sandalwood coffer alongside an inked parchment manifest certifying the provenance of the carnelian, the purity of the native silver filigree, and the harmonic resonance rating of the embedded catalyst. Each transaction is sealed with imperial wax stamps for royal chancery taxation records.
    • Purchasing Cost: Driven up by inter-island shipping tariffs, metropolitan retail markup, bureaucratic seal fees, and the mandatory 3% municipal point-of-sale tax, prices in metropolitan salons range from 75 to 105 silver pieces (7.5 to 10.5 gold coins). Avatars presenting a verified commission from the Crown Diplomatic Corps, Imperial Heraldic College, or an accredited Arbiters’ Guild apply their 10% tier 1 discount, lowering the total to between 67.5 and 94.5 silver pieces.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: An avatar seeking to liquidate the mantle at an imperial salon must submit it to detailed appraisal. The salon’s court artificer inspects the silver embroidery for breaks, verifies that the linen lining still holds its authentic rose-cedar infusion, and checks public municipal ledgers to ensure the garment bears no confiscation liens or active Banishment Marks. Adhering to the standard 10% baseline for tier 1 sellers, the proprietor offers between 7.5 and 10.5 silver pieces, depositing the proceeds directly into the seller’s World Bank ledger to provide a clean audit trail for imperial tax assessors.
  • Clandestine Brocade Fences, Shadow Courtiers, and Black-Bazaar Ateliers:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Hidden within the labyrinthine alleyways behind central spice bazaars, subterranean bathhouse vaults, or the back rooms of disreputable antiquities shops, illicit fences deal in confiscated noble regalia and stolen diplomatic foci. Operating behind iron-barred oak doors and heavy tapestries, these shadowy dens conceal their inventory within secret floor vaults and hollow cedar walls to survive sudden bailiff inspections. The atmosphere is heavy with the scent of burning musk incense, sour wine, damp masonry, and stale tobacco, accompanied by the muffled voices of conspirators whispering behind silk privacy screens.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Entry into a brocade fence’s lair requires an introduction from a trusted court fixer or the payment of an embossed copper token to armed door-guards. Goods sold here frequently derive from disgraced ambassadors, court heists, or the personal effects left behind when fallen tier 1 avatars dissolve into purple sparks upon death. Transactions are settled strictly in untraceable, physical currency—loose silver coins, unminted electrum droplets, or raw gold dust—completely avoiding World Bank transfers to prevent judicial freezing of assets by crown magistrates.
    • Purchasing Cost: Clandestine fences operate on aggressive opportunism. If the dealer knows the buyer is facing an imminent social ruin, an urgent court tribunal, or an unsanctioned parley where their life depends on projecting unshakeable diplomatic immunity, the price is driven up to between 80 and 130 silver pieces (8 to 13 physical gold coins). Formal guild tokens and court titles provide no discount in these illicit back rooms.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: Black-market fences offer an immediate cash outlet for vestments acquired through courtly intrigue or battlefield salvage. If the fence has a waiting client among an espionage ring or a disgraced courtier needing to forge diplomatic credentials, they may pay up to twice the standard merchant rate, providing 8 to 11 silver pieces in untraceable physical coin. Conversely, if the seller appears desperate, visibly wounded, or pursued by imperial bailiffs, the fence will exploit their vulnerability, offering as little as 2 silver coins.
  • Frontier Oasis Caravans, Pilgrim Encampments, and Roadside Ribats:
    • Operating Environment and Physical Layout: Along high-pass trade routes, arid salt-trail oases, and desert border stations connecting far-flung island states, trade is conducted from felt yurts, camel-train bivouacs, and fortified stone ribats (caravanserais). Large freight wagons feature drop-down awning tables covered in rough-woven kilims, surrounded by bales of raw wool, jars of dried fruit, and boxes of incense. The air smells of camel fleece, cardamom tea, woodsmoke from sheep-dung fires, and dry alkaline dust carried on desert gales.
    • Acquisition and Buying Procedures: Transactions at a frontier ribat are personal and unhurried. The merchant conducts business over small cups of spiced black tea, sitting cross-legged on a carpet with a curved dagger resting within easy reach. The prospective buyer inspects the mantle, shaking out the folds to verify the rose-cedar scent and striking the silver counter-weight bell to hear its resonance. Because these waystations sit in unincorporated borderlands beyond municipal boundaries, municipal sales taxes do not apply, though caravans must account for provincial transit duties.
    • Purchasing Cost: In frontier oasis markets and pilgrim waystations, Sufism 40 of the Engraced Station sells for 48 to 68 silver pieces. Frontier caravan merchants readily accept practical trade barter, eagerly swapping the mantle for transportable, high-value goods such as saffron jars, pure rose-attar vials, rolls of parchment, dried dates, or biological fluids harvested from desert beasts using fluid collectors.
    • Liquidation and Selling Dynamics: Frontier merchants maintain limited coin boxes and prioritize items that can be resold to arriving caravans or traveling pilgrims. When buying the mantle from a tier 1 avatar, the merchant pays the standard 10% rate (4.8 to 6.8 silver pieces), typically settling the transaction in vital travel supplies—such as waterskins, riding rations, horse fodder, or fresh linen tunics. Cash payouts are logged in the wagon manifest to satisfy state frontier patrols.
  • Statutory Taxation, Banking Overhead, and Currency Encumbrance:
    • Municipal Taxation and State Transit Tariffs: All lawful purchases of the mantle are subject to the fiscal statutes of Saṃsāra’s island states. Transactions concluded within chartered Towns, State Capitals, or Sovereign Havens incur a mandatory 3% municipal point-of-sale tax. Merchant wagons transporting courtly textiles across provincial borders must pay a 5% ad valorem transit tariff assessed by border garrisons, alongside an additional 1% national toll at the Central City gates. Foreign nationals not registered with the local state are assessed double rates (a 6% sales tax and a 10% border transit tariff).
    • World Bank Administrative Deductions: When sales proceeds are credited to an avatar’s account through the commercial banking telegraph network, the system automatically deducts a 1% administrative fee, rounded up to the nearest copper coin. On a standard sale yielding 5 silver pieces (50 copper), the bank deducts 1 copper piece, depositing 4 silver and 9 copper into the character’s Mind’s Eye account ledger. These records remain accessible to imperial tax magistrates and chancery auditors monitoring diplomatic commerce.
    • Physical Coinage Weight Versus Extradimensional Storage: Avatars carrying heavy pouches of loose coinage across courtly halls or mountain trails face significant encumbrance and social embarrassment. Carrying dozens of loose copper, nickel, or silver pieces creates noticeable physical bulk that mars the drape of tailored vestments and produces an audible metallic jingle that disrupts courtly decorum and alerts lurking street thieves. Storing money inside an Extradimensional Pouch eliminates all coin mass, volume, and noise, allowing the diplomatic avatar to walk through royal chanceries and crowded bazaars with effortless, noiseless poise.

Roleplay Dynamics, Environmental Tactics, and Defensive-Offensive Applications of Sufism 40 of the Engraced Station

  • Imperial Sovereign Audiences, Royal Chanceries, and Treacherous Diplomatic Banquets:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: Within the towering marble pavilions, gilded audience chambers, and tiered banquet halls of Saṃsāra’s sovereign capitals, conflict is waged through poisoned courtesies, whispered betrayals, and sudden blade-draws beneath silk canopies. The air is warm and dense with the conflicting perfumes of burning ambergris, spiced wines, roasted meats, and the underlying tension of rival noble factions. Hidden arbalestiers lurk behind decorative lattice screens, and court assassins carry spring-loaded daggers dipped in wyrm-venom. A single diplomatic misstep or breach of etiquette can trigger execution decrees or civil wars across the archipelago.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • While navigating treacherous banquet floors slick with spilled wine, grease, or sudden assassin blood, the avatar relies on the Mīzān of the Engraced Station passive. The player narrates moving with serene, frictionless balance across polished porphyry or overturned silver platters, ignoring difficult terrain penalties while maintaining unbroken conversational cadence.
      • As rival courtiers attempt subtle social ambushes, slanderous provocations, or concealed magical compulsion, the Mīzān passive projects glowing amber and rose vectors into the avatar’s Mind’s Eye. These telemetry lines illuminate fluctuating emotional pulses, identifying hidden daggers, deceitful intentions, and covert spellcasting up to thirty feet away, granting advantage on all Insight, Etiquette, and Sense Motive checks.
      • If a concealed assassin lunges from behind a tapestry or a volley of hand-crossbow bolts is loosed into the embassy party, the avatar activates the Silent Web of the Dignified Mantle. A sharp, wordless downward press on the mantle lappets projects an instantaneous kinetic-spiritual web across twenty feet, absorbing 25% of the incoming piercing and slashing damage, parting the deadly volley around the ambassadorial retinue like water around a polished prow.
      • In close-quarters scuffles, the +1 Armor Check bonus represents the dense silk-wool twill, silver filigree embroidery, and carnelian pectoral plate turning aside hidden stiletto thrusts, garrotes, and throwing darts aimed at the neck, shoulders, and chest.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When court factions draw steel or an enraged monarch orders guards to execute parleying delegates, the avatar deploys the Somatic Engracing Cadence (The Scented Salaam). Bringing their right hand over the carnelian rose and vocalizing a melodic greeting of peace (al-Salām), an expanding wave of warm rose-and-amber light floods thirty feet. Hostile guards and aristocrats must succeed on a Will/Composure save or immediately freeze, sheath drawn weapons, and find themselves unable to initiate unprovoked bloodshed for ten minutes.
      • In close physical defense against unruly duelists, the avatar employs the Effortless Demeanor passive alongside their tier 1 pass-through die (1d4), utilizing a walking staff or open-palm parries with standard iterative attack penalties (one-half damage for secondary actions). Striking with absolute calm, kinetic energy converts incoming momentum into off-balancing spins, disarming aggressive duelists without leaving a single vulgar bruise.
    • Prior to high-stakes treaty negotiations, the avatar conducts the Ritual Chanting of the Sacred Station (Fortyfold Courtesies). Pacing a dignified circle around the council table for ten minutes while sliding the ninety-nine olive-wood beads, the space is sanctified for twenty-four hours. Allies gain doubled base morale thresholds, while covert poisoning attempts, deceptive forgeries, and sudden treachery within the chamber suffer an immediate -25% penalty to execution and concealment.
  • Riotous Border Bazaars, Pilgrim Caravanserais, and Smuggler Squares:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: In crowded borderland settlements, caravan crossings, and contested market squares, hundreds of stressed merchants, desperate refugees, rowdy sellswords, and armed tariff collectors mingle in tight quarters. The air is thick with the pungent stench of pack beasts, sour fermented mare’s milk, cheap tallow, and roasting sheep fat. Shifting grain prices or ethnic insults can turn an argument into a full-scale riot of clubs, thrown stones, and arson torches in seconds.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Walking through squalid bazaar alleys choked with offal, rotten fruit, and butcher refuse, the Purity of the Scented Hem passive creates an invisible two-foot repelling aura. The avatar breathes only the sweet, cooling fragrance of wild Damask roses, cedarwood, and sandalwood, remaining completely immune to nausea from rancid street filth, while mud and staining slops roll off the saffron-and-cream fabric without leaving a spot.
    • Amidst jostling, angry crowds and surging street mobs, the Effortless Demeanor passive grants the avatar automatic advantage to resist being shoved, grappled, tripped, or knocked prone. The silver embroidery absorbs the physical impact of bumping shoulders and flying stones with 50% less concussive shock, guiding the wearer smoothly through packed mobs without breaking stride.
    • The continuous acoustic ting-chime of the silver counter-weight bell acts as a rhythmic anchor (dhikr), keeping the avatar’s breathing steady and granting total immunity to contagious panic, street frenzy, or chaotic acoustic confusion.
    • The +1 Armor Check bonus turns aside heavy wooden truncheons, thrown cobblestones, and butcher knives aimed at the collarbone, back, and upper chest.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When a volatile brawl threatens to tear a caravan camp apart or a mob advances to lynch an innocent merchant, the avatar speaks the Scented Salaam. If the avatar invokes the true name of the local clan elder, district khedive, or trading league, the calming rose-amber pulse expands from thirty to sixty feet, shocking the riot into sudden stillness, melting street rage, and ending active fear or frenzy conditions among all companions.
    • Utilizing the five-inch silver stylus on the right lapel, the avatar drafts formal compromise accords or writs of safe passage directly onto parchment, leveraging their enhanced Diplomacy advantage to reconcile blood feuds before swords are drawn.
    • In retreating maneuvers through narrow market stalls, the avatar uses the Somatic Salaam to pacify pursuing pack hounds or enraged mercenaries, stepping gracefully through closing toll-gates while pursuers stand disarmed by sudden spiritual shame.
  • Jagged Scree Chasms, Glacial Moraines, and High Mountain Passes:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: High upon the Pamir and Badakhshan mountain tracks, travelers must traverse vertical shale escarpments, slick icy moraines, and sheer cliffs swept by freezing gale winds thousands of spans above sea level. The air is razor-thin, cold, and carrying the bitter dust of sliding slate. Mountain drakes, rock-apes, and ruthless cliff-bandits stalk these passes, using the unstable terrain to shove travelers down bottomless ravines.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Operating on crumbling slate chutes or ice-slick ledge trails, the Mīzān passive ensures absolute poise. The avatar glides across shifting scree sheets without triggering rockslides, their footing remaining as planted and effortless as if standing on a temple prayer rug.
    • When sudden gale squalls howl across narrow ledge crossings, the steady ting-chime of the silver bell grounds the inner ear, completely dispelling mountain vertigo, altitude sickness, and fear of falling.
    • If cliff-bandits dislodge a massive boulder trap or a sudden serac ice-fall crashes down from an overhang, the avatar triggers the Silent Web of the Dignified Mantle. The barrier neutralizes 25% of the crushing blunt trauma, shunting the tumbling rock debris harmlessly away down the slope while leaving the party standing secure on the ledge.
    • The +1 Armor Check bonus deflects sharp falling slate shards, diving raptor talons, and slingshot stones aimed at the cranium, neck, and shoulders.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When ambushed by predatory cliff beasts or desperate mountain highwaymen along a narrow pass, the avatar activates the Somatic Engracing Cadence. The 30-foot rose-and-amber pulse floods the icy track, quelling the predatory hunger of mountain wolves or stopping bandits mid-stride, allowing the party to pass without bloodshed.
    • If physically engaged on a ledge, the avatar uses Effortless Demeanor to turn an opponent’s charge against them; using their 1d4 pass-through action, the avatar smoothly redirects the attacker’s forward thrust, causing the aggressor to overextend and fall prone upon the trail.
    • Prior to bedding down on an exposed, freezing ledge, the avatar performs the Fortyfold Courtesies ritual around the camp perimeter. The sanctified boundary shelters the campsite from territorial mountain spirits and predatory beasts for twenty-four hours, keeping companions calm, warm, and morally fortified despite howling sub-zero blizzards.
  • Subterranean Delve Bivouacs, Sapper Mutinies, and Slag-Forge Revolts:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: Deep within extraction drifts, subterranean refining foundries, and sapping shafts, overworked miners, escaped bondmen, and imperial engineers clash in suffocating, poorly ventilated chambers. The air is stifling, tainted by charcoal smoke, sulfuric steam, and the bitter copper stench of panicked sweat. Grievances over starvation rations, cave-in deaths, and ruthless foreman whips frequently explode into bloody subterranean mutinies fought with picks, shovels, and boiling forge slag.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Entering dark, stagnant mine stopes choked with the stench of decomposing carcasses, sulfur gas, and unwashed bodies, the Purity of the Scented Hem passive creates an immediate pocket of fresh air. The avatar inhales sweet Damask rose and mountain cedar, immune to nausea and respiratory retching, allowing them to speak with calm, level authority where others choke.
    • In confined, unlit mine crawlways where angry laborers brandish picks and heavy pry-bars, the Mīzān passive reveals emotional volatility and murderous intent as glowing amber lines in the dark, warning the avatar of a concealed strike seconds before a pickaxe swings.
    • If mutineers detonate an improvised black-powder blast or a timber stope buckles overhead, the avatar deploys the Silent Web of the Dignified Mantle. The kinetic-spiritual field absorbs 25% of the concussive explosion and crushing rockfall, safely dispersing the shock into side stone pillars.
    • The +1 Armor Check bonus turns aside heavy iron pick points, flying coal shards, and hammer blows directed at the collarbones, cervical spine, and chest.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Stepping directly between armed miners and imperial foremen on the verge of a massacre, the avatar unleashes the Somatic Engracing Cadence. The luminous rose-amber flash cuts through the cavern gloom, soothing the inflamed minds of the mutineers and foremen alike, forcing both sides to lower their tools and listen to arbitration.
    • The avatar leverages their enhanced Diplomacy and Etiquette advantage to mediate deep labor strikes, identifying systemic grievances and crafting binding contracts using the five-inch silver stylus, transforming a lethal underground revolt into a structured, lawful compact.
    • If forced to defend an unarmed party against a berserk subterranean brute, the avatar executes smooth, defensive redirection: dodging with fluid grace, parrying heavy swings, and tapping pressure points with the silver stylus to subdue the attacker without causing permanent injury.
  • Contested River Lock Fortresses, Toll Barges, and Naval Parleys:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: Along disputed river frontiers and masonry canal cascades, opposing warships, privateer barges, and toll-garrison cutters frequently lock hulls during tense, armed inspections. Decks roll heavily in surging sluice eddies, while boarding bridges creak under the weight of armored marines holding cocked crossbows and readied boarding pikes. A single shouted insult across the gunwales can ignite a close-range firefight that sinks both vessels within the lock chamber.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Boarding a pitching, blood-stained inspection barge across wet, rocking gangplanks, the Mīzān passive grants perfect equilibrium. The avatar strides across narrow, rolling rails without clutching handropes or losing poise, commanding immediate visual respect from hardened river sailors.
    • When standing amidst foul river mud, rotted fish entrails, or bilge grease on working decks, the Purity passive prevents all staining; blood and dirty canal water slide right off the mantle’s hem, maintaining an immaculate appearance that unnerves crude buccaneers.
    • If a hostile vessel fires a broadside of swivel-gun canister shot or hurls fire-pots across the gunwales, the avatar triggers the Silent Web of the Dignified Mantle. The barrier absorbs 25% of the devastating shrapnel and concussive fire blast, preventing the diplomatic delegation from being slaughtered on deck.
    • The +1 Armor Check bonus protects the upper body against cutlass slashes, gaff hooks, and crossbow bolts fired from adjacent rigging tops.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When naval boarders swarm across the gunwales with drawn cutlasses, the avatar delivers the Somatic Engracing Cadence directly across the boarding bridge. The sudden pulse of rose-and-amber light washes over the raiders; privateers freeze mid-swing, overwhelmed by sudden reverence and an inability to strike, allowing the crew to disarm them or cut the boarding lines.
    • During tense maritime customs inspections, the avatar employs the Scented Salaam to calm suspicious harbor masters, turning hostile contraband interrogations into hospitable, courteous exchanges.
    • Before entering contested, pirate-choked river narrows, the avatar performs the Fortyfold Courtesies ritual over the ship’s quarterdeck. The vessel and up to twelve designated crew members receive an unshakeable aura of sacred sanctuary for twenty-four hours, unnerving potential corsairs and causing ambush parties to hesitate long enough for the ship to pass through without conflict.
  • Stratospheric Cloud-City Atriums, Aerial Council Gazebos, and Sky-Corsair Parleys:
    • Environmental Context and Atmospheric Dynamics: High in Saṃsāra’s upper atmosphere, aerial diplomatic parleys are held within open-air marble gazebos, floating disk plazas, and sky-galleon observation decks suspended thousands of paces above the planetary surface. The environment features dizzying vertical drops into the endless violet void of VaporSphere, sudden stratospheric downdrafts, and howling shear winds that tear at cloaks and flags. Winged guards, aerial knights, and sky-corsairs maintain uneasy truces while circling overhead on glider vanes.
    • Defensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • Standing at the edge of an open sky-balcony buffeted by gale-force shear winds, the avatar’s mantle drapes with supernatural grace. The steady acoustic cadence of the silver counter-weight bell eliminates high-altitude vertigo, anchoring the avatar’s center of mass so that even sudden airframe drops do not shake their posture.
    • While parleying with erratic sky-corsair captains whose hands rest on cutlass hilts, the Mīzān passive outlines emotional stress vectors, revealing sudden betrayal plots or panic triggered by high-altitude hypoxia before weapons can clear their scabbards.
    • If a sky-corsair glider collides with the pavilion or an aerial bomb detonates near the parley circle, the avatar deploys the Silent Web of the Dignified Mantle. The barrier absorbs 25% of the kinetic blast and hurricane downdraft, preventing the delegates from being blown over the railing into the planetary void.
    • The +1 Armor Check bonus deflects raking glider wing-blades, aerial harpoon points, and snapped rigging wires aimed at the upper torso and spine.
    • Offensive Roleplay and Mechanics:
      • When negotiations break down and sky-corsairs move to take the diplomatic delegation hostage, the avatar executes the Somatic Engracing Cadence. The rose-amber pulse expands across the open deck; corsairs drop their glider reins and crossbows, immobilized by a wave of profound spiritual humility, allowing the avatar to dictate terms of safe retreat.
    • In aerial parleys where sky-knights attempt to intimidate the avatar with aggressive fly-bys, the avatar stands motionless, their Effortless Demeanor turning back the buffeting slipstreams with complete indifference, utterly dismantling the raiders’ psychological leverage.
    • Before convening an imperial sky-conclave, the avatar sanctifies the floating council pavilion using the Fortyfold Courtesies ritual. For twenty-four hours, the council chamber becomes an inviolable space of peace, ensuring that aerial rivalries are settled through the elegant eloquence of the word rather than the brutal destruction of sky-fleet warfare.

Perception of Activation:

  • Five Senses Breakdown:
    • Visual Perception (Sight):
      • User Experience: Upon activation, the visual field softens into a warm, high-clarity golden-peach spectrum. Harsh shadows and disorienting glares recede; the lozenge-shaped Badakhshan carnelian medallion at the sternum blazes from within with an inner amber luminescence, causing the engraved forty-petaled desert rose to glow like an illuminated lantern. The silver filigree embroidery along the lappets glints with fluid trails of starlight. When the wearer looks upon people, court assemblies, or hostile combatants, their vision overlays a subtle, shimmering tapestry of rose-gold and cinnabar vectors in the Mind’s Eye that outlines emotional volatility, deceitful intention, concealed weapons, and breaches of courtesy up to thirty feet away. Under True Sight, an expanding mandala of sacred geometric strapwork and blooming petals ripples outward across the floor.
      • Observer Experience: Observers witness the carnelian pectoral plate ignite with a warm, lantern-like apricot-and-amber radiance that casts a soft, regal halo over the wearer’s collarbones, neck, and face. The saffron-and-cream weave of the mantle takes on an ethereal, pearlescent luster, and the silver embroidery gleams as though bathed in morning sun. Those viewing through magical detection or True Sight see a translucent dome of spiraling floral vines (islimi) and woven geometric arches enveloping the avatar in an aura of quiet sovereignty.
    • Auditory Perception (Sound):
      • User Experience: The occasional clatter of gear and street noise instantly drops away, replaced by the pure, crystalline ting-chime of the silver spacing washers tapping against the counter-weight bell. Through the clavicles, sternum, and cervical vertebrae, the user feels a deep, resonant acoustic vibration—a harmonic vocal drone reminiscent of Sufi throat-recitation and liturgical remembrance (dhikr)—harmonizing directly with the biological rhythm of the heart. Ambient soundscapes reorganize: aggressive shouts, drawn steel, and harsh insults sound distant and muffled, while diplomatic cadences, subtle whispers, and vocal tremors register with crystalline acoustic clarity.
      • Observer Experience: Bystanders hear the dervish’s mantle emit a delicate, bell-like chime that rings out like a silver tuning fork struck in a quiet sanctuary. The sound cuts cleanly through howling winds, courtly uproar, or market brawls without jarring the ears. Those standing within arm’s reach report hearing a soothing, low-pitched acoustic hum beneath the avatar’s words that immediately slows racing heartbeats and quiets unruly tempers.
    • Olfactory Perception (Smell):
      • User Experience: Activation releases an instantaneous, intoxicating wave of restorative botanical fragrance as the linen lining warms against the shoulders. The user’s respiratory passages are filled with the clean, cooling scent of freshly distilled Damask rosewater, aged white sandalwood, and sharp mountain cedar oil, grounded by the resinous sweetness of gum benzoin. This aromatic veil purges the throat and nostrils, neutralizing the stench of battlefield blood, rotting offal, sewer damp, sulfur vents, and sour sweat.
      • Observer Experience: Anyone standing within a five-to-ten-foot radius experiences a sudden, refreshing draft of fragrant garden air. The oppressive stench of a dungeon, crowded audience hall, or muddy street is replaced by the delicate aroma of blooming roses, sandalwood, and sweet resin, bringing immediate psychological relief and washing away visceral revulsion.
    • Gustatory Perception (Taste):
      • User Experience: The user experiences a crisp, sweet sensation across the palate, identical to tasting pure mountain spring water infused with a drop of wild honey, dried white mulberries, and a hint of wild cardamom. Salivary glands activate smoothly, dispelling dry-mouthed nervous tension, the bitter copper taste of adrenaline, and the sour bile of panic.
      • Observer Experience: Observers do not taste the activation directly under normal conditions; however, individuals standing close by during an active engracing cadence report a faint, sweet coolness upon their lips, like inhaling morning dew in an alpine rose garden.
  • Tactile and Somatosensory Perception (Touch):
    • User Experience: The mantle delivers an immediate sensation of somatic weightlessness and warmth across the shoulders, neck, and upper back. The linen lining warms gently, soothing cervical tension, pack fatigue, and nervous shivers. The physical weight of the silver stylus and suspended beads vanishes entirely. The user feels a profound sense of frictionless bodily poise; their center of mass settles effortlessly, and their feet feel as though they are gliding across polished marble even when treading across jagged shale, scattered banquet debris, or slick mud.
    • Observer Experience: Touching the mantle reveals a firm, springy texture that feels unexpectedly solid under the fingers, akin to dense silk armor. Contact with the silver counter-weight bell imparts a soothing vibrational pulse that tingles pleasantly against the skin.
  • Multiple Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Mīzān of Social & Emotional Telemetry:
      • The avatar receives an instantaneous analytical map of interpersonal dynamics in their Mind’s Eye. Deceitful intentions, suppressed murderous impulses, rank hierarchies, and emotional volatility appear as clear, color-coded vectors, eliminating social uncertainty and exposing hidden agendas before a word is spoken.
    • Kinetic Deflection Intuition:
      • The avatar perceives incoming physical momentum—such as thrusting daggers, flying arrows, thrown cobblestones, or stumbling bodies—as fluid pressure waves. The user intuitively anticipates the precise rotational pivot required to let strikes glance harmlessly off the reinforced silk-wool weave without losing balance.
    • Aromatic Sanctification Boundary:
      • The user senses an invisible, repelling two-foot energetic envelope surrounding their person. Airborne pathogens, toxic spores, foul miasmas, mud, and staining fluids are perceived as repulsive forces that bounce off the mantle, keeping the wearer pristine.
    • Sanctuary Space Awareness:
      • When executing the sacred station ritual, the avatar feels the structural boundaries of an enclosed hall or camp lock into spiritual equilibrium. The bearer instinctively senses any covert act of violence, the drawing of a blade, or the introduction of poison within the sanctified perimeter.
    • Vestibular Gravitational Grounding:
      • The sash transmits the gravitational shifts of VaporSphere as a steadying hydrostatic pulse across the collarbones, completely eliminating physical vertigo, motion sickness, and altitude panic on high mountain ledges or open-air sky-balconies.
  • Perspectives on Activation:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • For the diplomatic avatar, activating the mantle replaces dread, anger, and anxiety with absolute contemplative serenity. Conflict is no longer viewed as an abrasive clash of steel, but as a disharmonious knot to be unraveled through elegance, patience, and poise. Danger is faced without fear; the avatar perceives the surrounding court or battlefield not as a den of killers, but as a gathering of troubled souls whose crude impulses can be guided, disarmed, and engraced through divine courtesy (adab).
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • To onlookers, the avatar’s presence elevates into that of an untouchable sovereign arbiter or holy ascetic. Their stride becomes measured and regal, framed by the warm apricot lantern-glow at their chest and the sweet chiming of the silver bell. In the midst of violent brawls or tense diplomatic standoffs, the avatar’s unyielding composure and fragrant aura command immediate awe, forcing drawn blades into scabbards and shaming aggressive courtiers into respectful silence.
  • Comprehensive Positives of Activation:
    • Absolute Scent and Stain Protection: Grants complete immunity to foul environmental stenches, sewer nausea, offal, and prevents mud, blood, wine, or grease from staining the vestment.
    • Social Hazard and Deceit Detection: Instantly reveals hidden daggers, deceitful motives, emotional instability, and social hierarchy across a thirty-to-sixty-foot radius.
    • Hostility and Bloodlust Quelling: The Scented Salaam ability suppresses overt aggression for ten minutes, forcing hostile entities to make composure saves or cease fighting, while clearing fear, panic, and confusion from companions.
    • Kinetic and Explosive Blast Mitigation: The Dignified Mantle ability absorbs 25% of incoming damage from explosions, projectile volleys, or crushing debris, safely parting the destructive force around the retinue.
    • Frictionless Movement and Poise: The avatar ignores non-magical movement penalties from rough scree, scattered rubble, slick banquet floors, or mud, gliding with unbroken equilibrium.
    • Sanctuary Fortification: The Fortyfold Courtesies ritual sanctifies an assembly hall or campsite for twenty-four hours, doubling ally morale thresholds and imposing a -25% penalty on covert acts of treachery, poisoning, or deceit.
    • Upper Body Physical Protection: Provides a reliable +1 Armor Check bonus that turns aside stiletto thrusts, garrotes, and throwing darts aimed at the neck, shoulders, and chest.
  • Comprehensive Negatives of Activation:
    • Inescapable Acoustic Ticking: The silver spacing washers strike the counter-weight bell with every stride, producing an audible chiming that makes moving in absolute stealth virtually impossible.
    • Conspicuous Visual Luminescence: The brilliant apricot-amber glow of the carnelian rose illuminates the user in darkness and blazes brightly across the astral plane, alerting lurking assassins and predatory astral entities.
    • Distinct Perfumed Trail: The powerful fragrance of Damask roses, cedar, and sandalwood leaves a distinct scent trail that tracking hounds and keen-nosed beasts can easily follow against the breeze.
    • Catastrophic Catalyst Fracture Risk: Channelling active spellcraft carries the baseline risk where rolling a 1 on a d20 results in the internal Tier 1 crystal shattering, stripping the mantle of all magical abilities until repaired.
    • Ritual Vulnerability and Interruption: The Fortyfold Courtesies ritual requires ten continuous minutes of circular pacing and vocal throat-chanting; suffering damage during this time forces an immediate concentration save or breaks the rite and wastes the mana.
    • Focused Item Sunder Risk: Because the carnelian rose openly glows and chimes at the center of the chest, intelligent adversaries can easily target the shoulder slot, risking attunement loss and the physical destruction of the gemstone.

  • Skill Requirements:
    • Weaving and Courtly Tailoring: Minimum skill level of 5 in Tailoring/Weaving. The artisan must excel in blending animal, insect, and plant fibers into fluid-draping twill, executing hidden rolled hems, and stitching intricate wire embroidery through multi-layered vestments.
    • Lapidary and Intaglio Carving: Minimum skill level of 4 in Gem Carving/Lapidary. The crafter must be capable of carving brittle carnelian without fracturing the stone, excavating an exact catalyst nest on the reverse side, and engraving forty symmetrical rose petals on the face.
    • Silversmithing and Fine Jewelry: Minimum skill level of 3 in Metalsmithing/Jewelry. The artisan must be proficient in pouring delicate filigree clasps, casting acoustically true counter-weight bells, drawing silver wire, and turning balanced spacing washers.
    • Arcane Infusion and Contemplative Mysticism: Minimum skill level of 5 in Arcane Crafting, plus an additional skill level equal to the tier rating of the resulting item (totaling a minimum skill requirement of 6). The practitioner must know how to channel personal mana into the Tier 1 crystal, establish social-somatic resonance conduits, and tune the matrix to spiritual harmony (al-mīzān).
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Step 1: Fiber Blending, Saffron Dyeing, and Mantle Tailoring:
      • Warp the loom with the spun golden flax and mulberry silk, using the two-ply mountain wool as the fill yarn, weaving a supple, interlocking diagonal twill measuring twenty-four inches in width and sixty inches in total length.
      • Simmer the woven cloth in a warm bath of crushed saffron stigmas, pomegranate rinds, and wild turmeric for eight hours until it takes on an even, sun-bleached saffron-cream luster, then rinse in cold spring water and dry in indirect mountain sunlight.
      • Cut and shape the woven yardage into a draped shoulder mantle featuring deep chest lappets and an arched neck opening tailored to fit comfortably over tunics or light armor.
    • Step 2: Linen Steeping, Sandalwood Impregnation, and Lining Attachment:
      • Submerge the Samarkand linen in the rosewater, sandalwood, and cedar oil infusion for twelve hours, wring it out with wooden rollers, and press it flat with a warm copper iron to lock the fragrant oils deep into the plant fibers.
      • Lay the treated linen along the interior facing of the saffron mantle, folding the outer silk-wool edges inward to create a rolled edge.
      • Secure the lining to the shell using double-pass running stitches of waxed silk thread, seating internal reinforcement tabs at the collarbone to support the silver clasp.
    • Step 3: Badakhshan Carnelian Lapidary, Desert Rose Relief, and Pearl Inlay:
      • Grind the carnelian slab on the soapstone lapping block with wet garnet abrasive slurry until it forms a symmetrical lozenge, three inches by two inches, with beveled edges.
      • Using diamond-pointed burins, engrave the front face with the relief of a blooming forty-petaled desert rose surrounded by eight-fold geometric strapwork, cutting grooves to a uniform depth of one millimeter.
      • On the reverse side, hollow out a central circular cavity three-eighths of an inch deep, shaped to match the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal.
    • Blend the powdered river-pearl dust and kaolin with dissolved gum arabic into a bright, white-pearl paste; burnish this paste into the recessed rose petals, allow it to dry for six hours, and polish the plate on the felt wheel with tin oxide until the stone gleams with an oily, glass-smooth finish.
    • Step 4: Silversmithing: Filigree Clasp, Stylus, Counter-Weight Bell, and Washers:
      • Cast the two interlocking leaves of the filigree collarbone clasp using native silver in fine sand molds, cleaning the piercings with jewelers’ files and burnishing the surface to a mirror sheen.
      • Hammer out the five-inch silver writing stylus on the miniature anvil, tapering the tip to a fine drafting point, boring an eyelet through the terminal, and hardening the metal through planishing.
      • Cast the hollow silver counter-weight bell, tuning its rim with fine needle files until it rings with a clear, lingering acoustic fifth.
      • Hammer out six thin circular silver spacing washers, drilling each with a central stringing hole.
    • Step 5: Bead Lathe-Turning and Rosary Loop Assembly:
      • Mount the sixty-six olive wood and thirty-three apricot wood blanks onto a hand-cranked spindle lathe, turning each to a six-millimeter sphere and drilling a one-millimeter hole through the center.
      • Buff the wooden beads with sweet almond oil and fine pumice powder until polished and water-resistant.
      • String the beads onto a loop of braided silk cord, organizing them into three groups of thirty-three separated by pairs of the silver spacing washers, and terminate the loop with a silver clip.
    • Step 6: Beeswax-Benzoin-Pearl Compounding:
      • Melt the mountain beeswax over low charcoal embers in a glazed ceramic bowl, gradually folding in the pulverized gum benzoin tears and river-pearl dust.
      • Stir the compound continuously with a glass rod until it forms an elastic, amber-hued bedding mortar that remains pliable at skin temperature.
      • Keep the mortar lukewarm to ensure proper adhesion before seating the catalyst crystal.
    • Step 7: Catalyst Infusion, Bedding Seating, and Carnelian Mounting:
      • Pack a uniform bed of the warm beeswax-benzoin mortar into the rear cavity of the carved carnelian medallion.
      • Seat the coin-sized Tier 1 Magic Crystal firmly into the bedding, making sure its upper facet sits flush with the rim of the stone cavity.
      • The artisan focuses their Mind’s Eye, channeling a continuous stream of personal mana into the crystal bed over twelve minutes while chanting the rhythmic formulas of spiritual courtesy and divine grace (adab wa al-mīzān).
      • Once the crystal flares with an internal peach-and-amber glow, back-fill the cavity with the remaining resin paste and anchor the carnelian medallion over the upper sternum using hidden silver mounting prongs stitched through the lined mantle shell.
    • Step 8: Silver Wire Embroidery, Rigging Accessories, and Kinetic Balancing:
      • Using fine annealed silver wire, embroider flowing floral vines (islimi) and calligraphic motifs of peace along the borders of the frontal lappets, anchoring the silver clasp to the collar points.
      • Secure the five-inch silver stylus and the rock-crystal vial of rose-attar to the right lapel using reinforced silver wire loops.
      • Mount the tuned silver counter-weight bell and the ninety-nine bead loop to the left lapel.
      • Don the mantle over a padded doublet, fasten the collar clasp, and walk twenty paces: verify that the silver spacing washers strike the counter-weight bell with an audible, rhythmic ting-chime without restricting neck rotation, arm swing, or somatic gestures.
    • Step 9: Consecration, Smudging, and Structural Verification:
      • Ignite the herbal smudge bundle of Damask rose petals, sandalwood flakes, and raw benzoin, passing the entire mantle and its hanging implements through the fragrant smoke forty-nine times while reciting the names of compassion and benevolence, invoking Gaialilith as the mother of living grace.
      • Anoint the carnelian rose medallion with three drops of cold snowmelt spring water to activate the energetic matrix, letting the fabric rest in the mountain breeze for one full hour.
      • Roll a d20 to determine the final crafting outcome: a result of 2 through 19 confirms standard crafting success, yielding an item resilience rating of 10 and a maximum hit point pool equal to the wearing avatar’s base plus 10; a result of 20 imparts an exceptional spiritual resonance, granting a permanent +1 bonus on checks made to negotiate peaceful resolutions and resist physical displacement; a result of 1 represents a catastrophic failure of the resin matrix, causing the Tier 1 crystal to shatter into non-magical gray dust and requiring replacement of the catalyst.

Saffron Mantle of Fortyfold Station, Roaring Sovereign of Brass Mallet, and Silent Ascetic Who Defeated Seven Hosts with a Vial of Watered Rose

In that uncounted year of the four-cornered world Saṃsāra, when the great yellow eye Helios was first nailed into the roof of the middle heavens—held fast by iron wedges so that the shadow of night could never wash the dust from the rocks—the falling multitudes did drop out of the cloud-veil like dried beans shaken through an ox-sieve. They fell without garments, without sandals, and without courtesy, their ribs striking the high scree of Badakhshan with the dull cracking noise of earthen pots. And though the gray earth-mother Gaialilith caught their bruised frames upon her beds of wild thyme and sweet briar, keeping their breath inside their throats, the bitter sponge of the forgottenness had wiped their brains so completely that a man knew not his own sister from a wild wolf-bitch, nor did an emperor know whether a plate of mutton ought to be eaten with the teeth or crammed into the ear.

Yet among all the pestilences of that third age of settlement, none was so hideous as the swelling of the great belly of VaporSphere. For whenever that violet monstrosity hung directly above the mountain passes, dragging upon the blood and the bitter black bile of men as a rope draggeth a bucket from a foul well, the mortals were seized with a roaring drunkenness of wrath. A neighbor would take up an unhewn river-cobble and smash his brother’s cheek for the drop of a spilled melon-seed; the chieftains of the shale-quarries would rip out the tongues of their runners if a message arrived five breaths late; and the high plateaus were turned into a vast slaughter-pen where every man’s hand was an axe and every man’s tongue was a poisoned asp.

Now upon the high, wind-battered shelf of the Badakhshan ridges, where the red carnelians grow in the cold quartz seams like dried drops of bull’s blood, there reigned a terrible prince and reaver. His name in the ancient, worm-chewed script is transcribed as Padishah Pulad-Khan-of-the-Cleaving-Mallet, though the margin-scribe hath written in gloss that the title signifieth equally The-Pig-Who-Bite-the-Gate-Iron. He was an avatar of immense stature, bearing thick bones and a neck like an uncut juniper trunk, yet his spirit was coarse as an unwashed camel-blanket. He believed that the governance of mortals was like the beating of raw copper—that if a subject did not tremble until his knees struck his teeth, he was an outlaw; and that if an assembly did not smell of terror, sulfur, and wet iron, it was an insurrection.

In his fortress of black schist, which he had roofed with the salted skins of mountain bears, Pulad-Khan sat upon a seat of river-boulders bound with iron bands. If a servant tripped upon the greasy floor, the Khan commanded that the wretch’s thumbs be crushed with a smith’s tongs. If an envoy spoke with a soft voice, the Khan threw a brass cup at his mouth, bellowing: Why dost thou squeak like a rat behind an oil-jar? In the presence of Pulad, only the war-trumpet and the crack of broken spines are sweet music!

Now it came to pass that the seven great clans of the mountain valleys—who held the barley-terraces, the lapis-trenches, and the high goat-pastures—fell into an unending and muddy war over three broken irrigation ditches. For fourteen harvests their young men had stuck bone lances into one another’s bellies, until the mountain brooks ran red as pomegranate wine, and the fields lay fallow, choked with poisonous burdock and the white bones of unburied pack-mules.

Pulad-Khan, rejoicing in their misery, sent forth his iron-faced heralds, crying: Come unto my fortress of schist, ye seven dogs of the ditches! Come unto my great banquet of meat and sour beer, that I may divide the waters between you; and whosoever refuseth my decree shall have his skull chopped from his shoulders and filled with pig-fat to make a grease-lamp for my stables!

The seven chieftains, trembling in their greasy pelts, came up to the citadel with thirty men-at-arms apiece, bearing rusty scythes and jagged falchions. They were ushered into the great feast-hall, where forty spits of burnt ram-meat smoked over low charcoal pits, and the floor was foul with stale ale, bone-gristle, spit, and dog-dung. The mercenaries of the Khan stood along the walls three ranks deep, wearing helmets of boiled hide and leaning upon double-edged cleavers, their eyes red with the smoke and their fingers twitching on their grips. For Pulad-Khan had secretly commanded his captains: When the feast is half-eaten, and their bellies are stuffed with coarse gristle, I will overturn my brass trencher. Then do ye close the iron wickets and chop them into sausage-meat, every mother’s son; for an island divided by seven masters is a house of lice, but an island under my mallet is an empire of silence!

The chieftains sat upon the wet benches, glaring at one another with swollen veins, their hands clutched around their dirk-hilts, while the violet mass of VaporSphere crept above the high chimney-holes, poisoning their hearts with a black, suffocating rage. An iron cleaver was dropped upon a stone platter; an insult was screamed concerning the theft of a lame ewe; twenty men leaped to their feet with drawn iron, and the hall trembled on the edge of a great tearing of flesh.

Now there dwelt in a dry rock-cleft three leagues below the fortress, where an icy meltwater rill fell through a tangle of wild Damask rosebushes, a solitary dervish and mendicant whose name in the broken dialect of the high valleys was Khwaja Baha-al-Din-of-the-Quiet-Stride. He was an avatar of the first tier, slender as a willow-rod, possessing no estate, no iron, and no cattle. He had entered into that sacred seclusion which the ancient tongue calleth The-Fortfold-Waiting (al-Chilla), wherein a man eateth only three dried apricots at sundown, drinketh cold snow-water from his palm, and sitteth upon an unworked stone for forty mornings and forty twilights, striving to purge all haste, bile, and abrasive loudness from the rooms of his heart, until his body becometh like a clean pane of mountain crystal through which the light of divine courtesy (adab) may shine without hindrance.

Upon the thirty-ninth twilight, as Baha-al-Din sat with his knees gathered into his hempen apron, breathing in the measured rhythm of the fourfold lung-watch, the gray mother Gaialilith did stir the water of the little rill, and a voice spoke out of the rose-thicket, saying: O Baha-al-Din, whose breath is level like the surface of a milk-pan, arise. For the proud dog in the black castle hath gathered the seven families into his trough of blood, and before Helios reacheth his twelfth hour, the floor of his banquet shall be washed in the red life of three hundred avatars, whose purple sparks shall rot in the stones and leave the valleys without fathers. Take up the needle of bone; weave the mantle of the engraced station; and go thou up unto the slaughter-pen.

Wherefore the Khwaja arose, his limbs light and supple as peeled hazel, and went forth into the high slopes to gather the substance of the mantle, according as the divine wisdom of the Mīzān did dictate.

First, he went unto the rocky ledges where the wild mountain sheep graze among the clouds, and he gathered forty measures of their soft, two-ply fleece, and thirty lengths of the split mulberry silk which the hill-women spin upon bone whorls, and five-and-twenty lengths of the long-staple golden flax that drinketh the glacial runoff. He set these fibers upon his narrow foot-loom, carding and throwing the shuttles under the rhythm of his own heartbeat, weaving a twill of such fine, elastic resilience that it would drape across the shoulders like running water. He gathered two ounces of the golden stigmas of the autumn saffron that blossometh in the gravel, four ounces of dried pomegranate rinds from the valley orchards, and the crushed roots of the wild mountain turmeric; and he brewed them in a kettle of soft rainwater until he had created a dye-bath of radiant, sun-bleached saffron and creamy gold. In this bath he steeped the cloth until it shone like the morning light upon an alpine meadow.

Second, he went down unto the valley weavers of Samarkand and obtained a tailored strip of their water-retted mountain linen, forty-and-eight inches from border to fringe. He took four fluid ounces of the triple-distilled water of wild Damask roses, an ounce of white sandalwood heartwood ground to fine dust upon a whetstone, and a measure of the clean, resinous oil pressed from mountain cedar boughs; and he soaked the linen in this sweet aromatic bath for a day and a night, pressing it with a warm stone until the cooling fragrance of gardens and holy places was locked into the very marrow of the threads. This linen he stitched into the underside of the saffron mantle with waxed silk cord, that it might rest against the neck and chest of the wearer.

Third, he ascended the sheer granite precipices of Badakhshan, where the red carnelian nodule lie in the gray gneiss like sweet candied dates; and he selected a flat lozenge of that stone, three inches from point to point, free from cloudiness, possessing the clear, deep fire of a setting sun. With a burin of river-diamond he engraved upon its face the blooming form of the forty-petaled desert rose, surrounded by the interlocking strapwork of the eightfold balance; and he hollowed the reverse side with a core-drill of reed and pumice, creating an oval chamber three-eighths of an inch deep. Therein he seated an uncut, coin-sized talisman of warm peach-and-amber sky-crystal, which was a seed of the first tier, dropped from the great wheel of heaven; and he sealed it in a bed of triple-filtered mountain beeswax, fragrant gum benzoin, and the pearlescent dust of unpierced river-pearls, polishing the face of the stone until it gleamed with the oily luster of a king’s seal.

Fourth, he took four ounces of native silver, hammered from the cold quartz veins of the high passes, and forged it upon an anvil of green jasper into a filigree collar-clasp of interlocking ivy-leaves; and he turned out a slender five-inch writing stylus with a point like a viper’s tongue for the scribing of treaties; and he cast a hollow counter-weight bell, filing its lip until it rang with a long, weeping fifth that melted the marrow of anyone who heard it; and he cut six thin spacing washers of beaten silver.

Lastly, he took six-and-sixty beads turned from the ancient wild olive wood of the lower shrines, and three-and-thirty beads from the scented heart of the mountain apricot tree, stringing them upon a braided silk cord divided into three measures by the silver washers. And he hung upon the right lapel a tiny vial of carved rock-crystal filled with the purest attar of roses; and across the borders of the frontal lappets, with fine-drawn annealed silver wire, he embroidered the flowing vines of the islimi and the forty names of divine forbearance. And he passed the completed vestment through the smoke of dried Damask rose petals, cedar shavings, and white benzoin tears nine-and-forty times, until the cloth smelled neither of loom-sweat nor of the bitter grease of mountain huts, but of the court of the saints in the highest paradise.

When Khwaja Baha-al-Din did throw this sweeping saffron mantle across his lean shoulders, fastening the silver filigree clasp at his throat, behold! A miracle of quietness fell upon the high passes.

His limbs, which had been weary from forty days of hunger, became weightless as thistle-down. The sharp mountain shale beneath his bare feet seemed to turn into cushions of green velvet; the biting mountain wind, which was wont to freeze a man’s spit before it touched his shoe, became like the gentle fanning of peacock feathers; and around his neck and chest there opened an aromatic garden of Damask roses, sandalwood, and sweet cedar so potent that the wild mountain drakes, smelling it upon the breeze, tucked their scaled heads beneath their wings and fell asleep upon their crags. Through the carnelian lozenge at his chest, an amber-and-peach lantern-glow awoke, and looking down into the valleys, the Khwaja saw not muddy paths, but the glowing rose-and-amber vectors of the Mīzān, which showed him the crooked thoughts of men, the places where a blade was hid, and the precise words of courtesy (adab) that could cut a knot of malice without shedding a drop of water.

The silver washers and the counter-weight bell did strike together with every pace, ting-chime, ting-chime, setting a cadence so pure that his heart fell into the sacred measure of the unhurried (al-Waqār); and he walked up the mountain toward the fortress of the cleaving mallet, alone, carrying neither shield nor wooden staff.

Now within the great hall of black schist, the hour of the bloody banquet was at hand.

The floor was a lake of spilt beer and overturned platters; three of the clan-chieftains had their daggers halfway out of their sheaths, snarling across the table; the violet eye of VaporSphere glared down through the smoke-vent, making their teeth itch for slaughter; and Pulad-Khan, his veins swollen like black sausages upon his brow, was raising his great brass platter in two hands, opening his mouth to bellow the word of death.

Suddenly, the great outer wickets of iron and oak, which six men were wont to bar with a cedar balk, swung inward without a creak.

Through the doorway came Baha-al-Din.

He did not shout. He did not run. He stepped over the threshold of grease and bone-gristle with the slow, terrifying poise of a king entering an unweeded onion-bed. His saffron mantle flowed behind him in wide, silken folds that caught no grease from the floor; the silver ivy-clasp gleamed at his collar; and the silver counter-weight bell struck its washer with a single, clear, weeping ting-chime that ran through the rafter-timbers like a cold drop of spring water running down a heated blade.

The three hundred mercenaries along the walls stopped their muttering. The wolfish war-hounds beneath the tables, which were tearing at sheep-paunches, suddenly ceased their snarling, lifted their bloody muzzles, and laid their jowls upon the dervish’s bare feet, whimpering with delight at the fragrance of Damask roses and sweet sandalwood that filled the greasy hall.

Pulad-Khan stood frozen, his brass platter held above his ears like a turtle’s shell, his eyes bulging. He roared in a voice like an iron kettle struck with a hammer: What beggar of the rocks is this who cometh uninvited into my feast without an iron collar? Ho, Captain of the Watch! Cut off his heels and throw him into the cesspit!

A monstrous mercenary captain, whose face was cross-hatched with fourteen scars from the border brawls, stepped forward with a double-edged cleaver of serrated steel, raising it with two hands to split the dervish from the crown to the brisket.

Baha-al-Din did not flinch, nor did he blink his eye.

He brought his slender right hand across his chest, resting two fingers upon the warm carnelian lozenge over his heart. He bent his head in that noble incline wherewith the angels salute the throne of mercy, and out of the center of his chest he spoke the ancient word of peace: Al-Salām ‘Alaykum.

Behold! As the syllable left his teeth, the carnelian rose ignited with a blinding, incandescent flash of warm peach-and-apricot light!

An expanding ring of sweet-smelling, rose-tinted fire rolled thirty paces through the black hall! The reeking stench of burnt meat, sour ale, and cold sweat was swept away in a single breath, replaced by the celestial perfume of blooming Damask gardens, white sandalwood, and freshly split cedar.

And then occurred that wonder which the scribes of Badakhshan have recorded with trembling reed-pens: the giant captain of the watch did not strike. The serrated cleaver fell from his fingers, striking the stone floor with a clatter that sounded like a dropped prayer-bead. The great brute fell upon his knees in the mud, weeping like a milk-sick child, covering his face with his calloused hands, crying: O my mother! How foul is my life! How dirty are my hands!

Around the entire circuit of the hall, the two-score mercenaries who held their axes ready let them fall from their numb fingers. The seven chieftains, whose eyes had been red with the venom of VaporSphere, sat down upon their benches, their daggers slipping back into their scabbards without their knowing it. A profound, aching shame fell upon every man; their mouths went dry of insults, and they looked upon their brother’s face not as a foe to be gutted, but as a traveler wandering in the same dark and freezing wilderness.

Yet Pulad-Khan was not so easily subdued by grace, for his heart was an ingot of crude pig-iron.

He hurled the great brass platter with all the fury of his shoulders directly at the dervish’s head—a heavy missile of beaten metal that would have decapitated a bullock. And from the dark rafters above, his personal assassin, a mountain dwarf who had eaten raw snakes from his youth, let fly an iron-barbed quarrel from a heavy steel crossbow, aimed directly at the soft hollow of Baha-al-Din’s throat.

The watchers cried out in horror, for the saint seemed delivered unto death.

Baha-al-Din did not leap aside. He made no sound.

With a sharp, two-handed, wordless movement, he pressed his palms firmly downward upon the two silver-embroidered lappets of his mantle.

Behold! The Silent Web of the Dignified Mantle unfolded!

An instantaneous, translucent canopy of rose-gold geometric lines and blooming forty-petaled flowers expanded twenty feet around the dervish, filling the air with a soft acoustic hum like that of a million bees in a summer meadow.

When the heavy brass platter struck that web, it did not smash the silk! Five-and-twenty parts of its momentum were extinguished in a flash of sweet-smelling amber embers; the remaining force was diverted along the curving vines of the silver embroidery, turning the brass plate aside so that it spun harmlessly away into an empty wine-cask. And when the iron crossbow bolt touched the collar-fringe, it shattered into three pieces of gray lead, which dropped into the dervish’s open palm like withered jasmine buds!

Then did Khwaja Baha-al-Din unclip the ninety-and-nine beads of wild olive and apricot wood from his left lapel.

He did not curse the Khan. He began to pace a slow, dignified circle around the central banquet hearth, walking with that measured, unhurried gait which the ancient translation calleth The-Treading-of-the-Living-Carpet. As he walked, his thumb moved along the beads, one by one, thirty-and-three for the clearing of wrath, thirty-and-three for the planting of courtesy, and thirty-and-three for the sealing of the eternal pact, his throat vibrating with the deep, liturgical chant of the forty courtesies (al-Adab al-Arba’īn).

For ten continuous minutes the dervish paced the circuit of the hall, while none dared draw a breath.

With every round he made, the walls of black schist seemed to turn into translucent alabaster; the grease upon the floor dried into clean, sweet dust; the air became light and cool as an alpine dawn; and a great, invincible dome of spiritual inviolability settled over the fortress.

When the ninety-ninth bead had clicked against the silver washer, Pulad-Khan could bear his own ugliness no longer. The great tyrant slipped from his seat of bound boulders; his brass-studded belt fell from his hips; he crawled on his hands and knees across the dry floor until he reached the hem of the saffron mantle. He laid his coarse forehead upon the embroidered silver vines, weeping so bitterly that his tears washed the dust from the dervish’s toes.

O saint of the high snows! the tyrant wept. I thought that a man was measured by the weight of his hammer and the terror of his shout. But thy whisper hath broken my soldiers’ hands, and thy sweet fragrance hath made my fortress smell like a tomb of dead dogs. Give me thy garment, that I may cover the nakedness of my soul!

Baha-al-Din smiled upon him with the sorrowful patience of an elder looking upon a foolish boy who hath beaten himself with his own stick.

He reached to his right lapel and unfastened the slender five-inch stylus of native silver. He took from the table a sheet of clean sheep-parchment that had been prepared for a warrant of death, and with swift, exquisite strokes of the silver point, he scribed the Great Accord of the Seven Sisters, dividing the water of the three ditches according to the ancient measure of the Mīzān, giving to each family that which was sufficient for their bread and no more.

He gave the parchment to the seven chieftains, who kissed the silver writing with their lips and embraced one another with tears of reconciliation.

Then Baha-al-Din spoke unto Pulad-Khan, saying these poorly translated words: Keep thy black castle, O Prince, but cast thy cleaving mallet into the deepest abyss of the shale, that the stones may grind it into sand. For the dominion of iron and the rule of the loud voice are like a fire of dry thorns—it blazeth with great crackling and black smoke, blinding the eyes and burning the hands of him that blew it, and in the morning there is left only cold gray ash that the mountain wind scattereth into nothingness. But the station of grace (al-Adab) is like the snow upon the high peaks: it falleth without the noise of an axe, it drapes the jagged rocks in beauty, and when it melteth beneath the light of heaven, it watereth seven thousand valleys with sweet drink. He who seeketh to master men with the fist shall find his house full of corpses and his end in purple sparks; but he who engraceth his presence, his speech, and his mantle with the quiet balance of the dervish shall turn seven roaring hosts into brothers, and sit among the princes of the earth in safety and peace.

And having delivered these words, Baha-al-Din did not remain to drink their spiced wine or receive their bags of silver coin. He gave the saffron mantle into the custody of the newly reconciled elders of the Badakhshan lodge, charging them to preserve its weave and its carnelian stone for the day when the anger of VaporSphere should again make the mountain folk mad with blood. And he turned about, his linen lining trailing the scent of wild Damask roses and cedar down the winding stair, and walked away into the high glaciers to finish his forty days of peace, alone, barefoot, and utterly contented.

And throughout the turnings of the moon Saṃsāra, the weavers and peacemakers of the dervish orders did fashion garments after the likeness of that first stole, even unto the fortieth iteration, that those tier 1 avatars who walk the courts of kings, the squalor of border markets, or the slippery moraines of the high passes might wear the mantle of the engraced station, still the howling tempests of human wrath, and turn aside the sharpest spears of the world without breaking the rhythm of a single step.

The moral of the story is that brute force, loud arrogance, and the terror of unyielding iron are vulgar weaknesses that inevitably destroy those who rely upon them, whereas the refined grace of perfect courtesy, calm spiritual poise, and the peaceful alignment of one’s presence with divine harmony possess the supreme power to disarm the most violent wraths, deflect the most lethal blows, and elevate the coarsest conflicts of the world into lasting monuments of reconciliation, dignity, and peace.

  • Mental and Spiritual Toll:
    • Initial Binding Ritual: Attuning to the mantle requires a successful Charm, Persuade, Art/Craft (Calligraphy), or Occult check during a one-hour seated contemplation in a quiet room or garden, accompanied by the expenditure of 1 permanent Magic Point and an immediate Sanity check (0/1D3 Sanity loss) as the investigator’s consciousness harmonizes with the spiritual order of divine courtesy (adab).
    • Mental Anchoring: The steady acoustic chiming of the silver bell, combined with the restorative aroma of warm Damask rosewater, sandalwood, and cedar, reduces any Sanity loss suffered from witnessing social atrocities, gore, or grotesque human depravity by 1 point (to a minimum of 0).
  • Passive Modifiers and Inherent Capabilities:
    • Mīzān of Social Composure: When surveying social gatherings, diplomatic negotiations, hostile standoffs, or formal assemblies, the investigator receives one Bonus Die on Appraise, Charm, Fast Talk, Insight, Intimidate (expressed through calm, unshakeable poise), and Psychology rolls made to assess emotional volatility, detect concealed weapons, spot deceitful motives, or de-escalate violence within 10 yards. In addition, the investigator ignores movement penalties across difficult ground (such as loose gravel, broken banquet glass, or slick mud), gliding across unstable surfaces with unbroken balance.
    • Purity of the Scented Hem: The mantle projects an energetic boundary across a two-foot radius around the upper torso and hem. • Resolution: Discharges an expanding wave of warm rose-and-amber light across a 10-yard radius (expanding to 20 yards if the true name or formal title of the local sovereign or authority is spoken). Hostile humans and sentient entities within the area must succeed on an Extreme POW check or cease all aggressive actions, sheathing weapons and refusing to initiate violence for 10 minutes unless directly attacked. Any companion within the radius immediately recovers from active bouts of madness, temporary insanity, or phobic paralysis.
    • Silent Web of the Dignified Mantle:
      • Magic Point Cost: 2 Magic Points.
      • Casting Time: 1 combat round (executed as an instantaneous, wordless reaction by pressing downward upon the lapels of the mantle).
      • Resolution: Projects an instantaneous kinetic-spiritual dampening field across a 5-yard radius. When an explosion, falling masonry, or a volley of projectile fire strikes the investigator or adjacent companions, incoming physical and concussive damage is reduced by 25%, parting the destructive force around the retinue.
    • Rite of the Fortyfold Station (Sanctification):
      • Magic Point Cost: 5 Magic Points.
      • Sanity Cost: 1D3 Sanity points.
      • Casting Time: 10 minutes of uninterrupted throat-chanting while slowly circumambulating a room or camp and sliding the ninety-nine wooden beads.
      • Resolution: Sanctifies an enclosed space up to 15 yards across for twenty-four hours. All allies resting within the sanctum gain +20% to their POW or Sanity rolls to resist terror and magical mental domination. Covert acts of treachery, poisoning, or deceit attempted within the sanctuary suffer one Penalty Die to execution and concealment. A Fumble (96–100) causes energetic backfire, inflicting 1D4 damage to the caster’s chest as the carnelian overheats.
  • System Drawbacks and Operating Hazards:
    • Audible Ticking Footprint: The suspended silver counter-weight bell and spacing washers clink rhythmically with every stride. Any Stealth roll made to move silently suffers one Penalty Die unless the tools are bound firmly with cloth (which suspends the armor value and active powers while bound).
    • Catalytic Fragility: If an active spell roll results in a Fumble, the internal peach-amber crystal fractures under energetic feedback. The investigator takes 1D3 points of physical shock damage to the sternum, and the mantle loses all magical properties until repaired by an artisan.

      • Action Economy: 1 Exploration Turn (10 minutes).
      • Operational Method: The wearer chants liturgical verses while cycling the ninety-nine beads around a campsite or council room (up to near range).
      • Resolution: For 1 full day, the camp cannot be surprised, inhabitants cannot be intimidated or charmed, and foes attempting sneak attacks, deceit, or poison within the boundary roll with disadvantage.
  • System Drawback:
    • Audible Chime: The silver counter-weight bell and washers strike the stylus with every stride. Any attempt to sneak or move silently while wearing the unrestrained stole automatically fails or suffers disadvantage at the referee’s discretion. Tying down the tools silences the chiming, but suspends the +1 Armor Defense bonus and all daily relic powers until untied.

Fate Core and Fate Condensed

The Saffron Mantle of the Engraced Station

  • Core Aspect:
    • Name: Saffron Mantle of the Engraced Station
    • Description: A tailored ceremonial mantle and dervish stole draped across the shoulders, chest, and upper back, fastened at the collarbone by an interlocking filigree clasp of native silver. Woven from high-altitude mountain fleece, raw mulberry silk, and golden flax, kettle-dyed a lustrous saffron and cream with saffron stigmas, pomegranate rinds, and wild turmeric. The inner lining is Samarkand linen infused with Damask rosewater, white sandalwood, and mountain cedar oil. Embroidered along the frontal lappets in fine silver wire are calligraphic flourishes and continuous floral vines (islimi). Over the sternum rests an oval lozenge of Badakhshan carnelian carved with a forty-petaled desert rose, concealing an uncut Tier 1 peach-and-amber magic crystal bedded in beeswax, gum benzoin, and pulverized river pearls. Suspended from the right lapel are a five-inch silver writing stylus and a rock-crystal vial of rose-attar; hanging from the left lapel are a tuned silver counter-weight bell and an unbroken loop of ninety-nine olive and wild apricot wood beads divided into three measures by silver spacing washers that chime with every movement.
  • Invocation and Compel Dynamics:
    • Invoking the Aspect: A character may spend a Fate Point (or invoke freely) when mediating diplomatic disputes, conducting courtly negotiations, reading interpersonal deception, steadying the morale of panic-stricken companions, absorbing projectile volleys, or gliding across treacherous, broken terrain with effortless physical poise.
    • Compelling the Aspect: The gamemaster may offer a Fate Point to compel this aspect when the rhythmic chiming of the silver counter-weight bell betrays the wearer’s position to alert sentries or predators, when the warm amber lantern-glow of the carnelian rose reveals the bearer in dark environments, or when the solemn spiritual code of courtesy (adab) obligates the character to intervene in a violent confrontation to prevent slaughter.
  • Protective Value and Stunts:
    • Upper Torso Deflection Guard:
      • Mechanics: The silver filigree embroidery and dense silk-wool twill provide Armor:1 against physical melee strikes, stiletto thrusts, garrotes, and flying projectile splinters targeting the neck, shoulders, and chest.
    • Purity of the Scented Hem:
      • Mechanics: The wearer is completely immune to environmental stenches, nauseating sewer vapors, and rotting offal. Mud, street grime, spilled wine, and blood splatters roll off the saffron-and-cream fabric without leaving a stain.
    • Mīzān of Social Equilibrium:
      • Mechanics: The character gains a +2 bonus to Empathy, Notice, or Rapport when observing social assemblies, diplomatic parleys, or tense standoffs to identify emotional volatility, hidden daggers, deceitful motives, or social hierarchy within thirty feet. In addition, the character ignores movement penalties from difficult terrain (such as loose scree, broken banquet glass, or slick mud), moving across unstable ground with unbroken balance.
    • Effortless Demeanor:
      • Mechanics: The character gains a +2 bonus to Physique or Athletics to resist being shoved, tripped, tackled, or knocked prone in physical confrontations.
    • Somatic Engracing Cadence (The Scented Salaam):
      • Mechanics: Once per scene, the character may spend an action to touch the carnelian rose and vocalize a melodic greeting of peace (al-Salām), rolling Rapport against Mediocre (+0) difficulty. On a success, they place the situation aspect Aura of Pacifying Courtesy on the zone with one free invoke (two on a style). Hostile NPCs in the zone must overcome a Fair (+2) Will obstacle to initiate unprovoked violence for the remainder of the scene. In addition, any ally in the zone immediately clears one mild mental consequence or ends active fear and panic effects. If the character invokes the true name or formal title of the local sovereign or authority, this effect expands to an adjacent zone.
    • Silent Web of the Dignified Mantle:
      • Mechanics: Once per scene, when the character or an ally in the same zone is subjected to physical stress from an explosion, projectile barrage, or structural collapse, the character may spend a Fate Point and press downward upon the mantle’s lapels as an immediate reaction. This creates a defensive advantage with two free invokes, reducing the incoming stress of the triggering area attack by 2 shifts for all targets in that zone.
    • Rite of the Fortyfold Station:
      • Mechanics: By maintaining ten minutes of continuous throat-chanting while cycling the ninety-nine beads around an enclosed room or campsite, the character rolls Lore or Rapport with a +2 bonus. On a success, they place the situation aspect Sanctified Station of Peace on the area with two free invokes. Allies resting within the sanctum gain Armor:2 against mental stress and intimidation for twenty-four hours, while attempts to commit murder, administer poison, or practice deceit within the boundary suffer a -2 penalty to execution and concealment.
  • System Drawback:
    • Audible Cadence: The silver counter-weight bell and spacing washers chime rhythmically with physical movement. Any Stealth roll made to move quietly suffers an automatic -2 penalty unless the wearer takes an action to tie down the implements with cloth (which suspends the armor value and all active stunts while bound).

Numenera & Cypher System

Stole of the Engraced Station

  • Artifact Classification and Technical Profile:
    • Level: 3 (variable 1d6 or fixed at Level 3).
    • Form Factor: A tailored shoulder stole and mantle woven from bio-synthetic wool, high-tensile silk, and flax fibers, lined with an aromatic, lipid-treated botanical linen. Features a central sternum clasp of refined native silver filigree mounting an oval carnelian disc containing an amber-hued photonic crystal, accompanied by a silver scribe stylus, an aerosol vial of rose-attar, an acoustic counter-weight bell, and ninety-nine wood-composite calculation beads separated by conductive silver washers.
    • Depletion: 1 in 1d20 (checked only upon activating active device functions).
  • Inherent Passive Benefits:
    • Upper Torso Armor: Provides +1 to Armor against physical melee strikes, flying shrapnel, and crushing blows targeting the wearer’s neck, shoulders, and chest.
    • Purity of the Scented Hem: The wearer gains an asset (reducing task difficulty by one step) on all Might defense rolls against nauseating odors, toxic bio-vapors, sewer gases, and airborne miasmas. Mud, blood, and chemical contaminants do not adhere to the fabric.
    • Mīzān Social Telemetry & Poise: The mantle projects an intuitive emotional and somatic readout into the wearer’s perceptual field. The user gains an asset on all Intellect tasks involving diplomacy, etiquette, detecting deception, identifying concealed weapons, or reading social hierarchy up to short range (50 feet). In addition, the wearer ignores movement penalties across broken, unstable, or slick surfaces.
    • Effortless Demeanor: The wearer gains an asset on Speed defense rolls to resist being shoved, tripped, grappled, or knocked prone.
  • Active Device Functions:
    • Somatic Engracing Cadence (The Scented Salaam):
      • Action: One action.
      • Effect: The user touches the carnelian rose and vocalizes a precise harmonic greeting, discharging an expanding wave of warm peach-and-amber light and neuro-calming aromatics across short range (50 feet). Hostile targets within range must succeed on an Intellect defense task or become pacified, unable to initiate physical attacks or hostile actions for ten minutes unless attacked first. Allies in range immediately recover from panic, confusion, or mental daze. Speaking the true title of a local sovereign expands the radius to long range (100 feet). Roll for Depletion upon activation.
    • Silent Kinetic Ward:
      • Action: Immediate reaction (taken when the wearer or an adjacent ally is struck by an explosion, projectile barrage, or falling debris).
      • Effect: Pressing downward upon the mantle’s lapels generates an instantaneous kinetic-deflection field across immediate range (10 feet). Incoming blast, concussive, or missile damage from the triggering event is reduced by 3 points for all affected targets, safely parting the destructive force around the group. Roll for Depletion upon activation.
    • Fortyfold Station Induction:
      • Action: Ten minutes of sustained harmonic chanting while cycling the calculation beads around an enclosed space or campsite.
      • Effect: The device establishes an energetic boundary of peace across short range for twenty-four hours. Allies resting within gain an asset on all defense tasks against fear, charm, and mental assault. Any attempt to commit acts of physical violence, administer poison, or practice deceit within the boundary is hindered by two steps. Roll for Depletion upon completion of the rite.
  • Complications and GM Intrusions:
    • Audible Footprint: The swinging silver bell and washers strike the stylus during rapid movement, increasing the difficulty of tasks made to move silently by one step.
    • GM Intrusion: A harmonic surge causes the carnelian crystal to backfire, dealing 3 points of ambient damage directly to the user’s chest, blinding the user with sensory overload for one round, and rendering the stole inert for one hour.

    • Conspicuous Radiance: When activated, the carnelian rose sheds dim peach-amber light in a 10-foot radius, making it impossible to remain hidden in unlit areas.

Hostile targets within the perimeter must make a Willpower + Logic test against Threshold 2. Allies within the area immediately recover from active Fear, Daze, or Confusion effects.

      • Operational Effect: Sanctifies the perimeter for 24 hours. Inhabitants gain a DM+1 bonus to resist psionic coercion, fear, or intimidation; covert acts of violence, deceit, or poison administration attempted within the boundary suffer DM-2.
  • System Complications and Physical Drawbacks:
    • Inescapable Acoustic Signature: The suspended silver bell and spacing washers clink rhythmically with physical movement. The wearer suffers an automatic DM-2 penalty to all Stealth checks involving quiet movement unless the tools are bound with cloth.
    • Sensor Traceability: The ambient peach-amber bio-resonance emitted by the internal crystal can be detected by thermal and empathic sensors at double normal detection range.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (Fourth Edition)

The Saffron Mantle of Peaceful Adab

  • Item Header and Physical Metrics:
    • Item Classification: Enchanted Relic / Arcane Focus (Shoulders Slot / Ceremonial Vestment).
    • Encumbrance: 1.
    • Availability: Exotic (originating from eastern mountain hospices, Cathayan envoys, and Silk Road holy orders).
    • Qualities: Fine, Focus (Lore of Light / Hysh or Lore of Life / Ghyran).
    • Armor Points: 1 AP on Body (Neck, Shoulders, and Upper Chest); Durability 3.
    • Physical Composition: Tailored mantle of mountain sheep’s wool, golden flax, and mulberry silk twill dyed saffron and cream, lined with rose-and-cedar-infused Samarkand linen, and embroidered with silver wire. Mounts a central lozenge of Badakhshan carnelian carved in forty-petaled desert rose relief with pearl inlay, an uncut peach-and-amber realm-stone catalyst, a two-piece silver filigree clasp, a five-inch silver writing stylus, a rock-crystal vial of rose-attar, a tuned silver counter-weight bell, and ninety-nine olive and apricot wood beads separated by silver counting washers.
  • Inherent Passive Benefits:
    • Torso Deflection Guard: Provides 1 Armor Point to the Body hit location (covering the neck, shoulders, and chest), helping to turn aside cutting blades, garrotes, and flying splinters.
    • Purity of the Scented Hem: The wearer is completely immune to gaining the Distracted or Prone condition caused by foul odors, sewer gas, or rotting corpses. Dirt, mud, and blood slide off the fabric without staining.
    • Mīzān of Social Poise: The wearer gains a +1 SL bonus on all Charm, Intuition, and Leadership tests to de-escalate disputes, detect deceit, or maintain courtly dignity. The character ignores movement penalties from loose scree, banquet wreckage, or mud.
    • Effortless Demeanor: The character gains a +10% bonus to resist Opposed Strength tests made to Trip, Shove, or Grapple them.
  • Active Rites and Spells:
    • Somatic Engracing Cadence:
      • Action Economy: 1 Action.
      • Operational Method: The character touches the carnelian rose with their right hand and vocalizes a melodic greeting of peace (al-Salām).
      • Resolution: Discharges a soothing pulse of amber light and rose fragrance across a 10-yard radius. Hostile characters must pass a Challenging (+0) Willpower test or gain the Pacified condition (cannot initiate attacks or cast hostile spells unless attacked first) for 10 minutes. Clears Fear and Broken conditions from all allies in range.
    • Silent Web of the Dignified Mantle:
      • Action Economy: 1 Reaction (triggered when struck by an area explosion, missile barrage, or collapsing masonry).
      • Operational Method: The character gives a sharp, wordless downward press upon the mantle lapels.
      • Resolution: A kinetic-spiritual ward ripples outward across 4 yards. The triggering blast or missile damage is reduced by 25% (or a flat -3 Damage reduction), safely parting the destructive force around the retinue.
    • Chant of the Fortyfold Station:
      • Action Economy: Extended Ritual requiring 10 uninterrupted minutes of circular pacing and throat-recitation while sliding the ninety-nine beads around an enclosed space or campsite (up to 10 yards across).
      • Operational Method: The character sings liturgical verses of forbearance to sanctify the space.
      • Resolution: The character makes a Channelling test against Average (+20) difficulty. On a success, the space is sanctified for 24 hours. Inhabitants gain a +1 SL bonus to resist Intimidation, Fear, and Terror; attempts to deceive, poison, or attack within the boundary suffer -1 SL.
  • System Drawbacks and Inherent Weaknesses:
    • Audible Rhythm: The silver bell and spacing washers clink rhythmically with every stride. The character suffers a -20% penalty to all Stealth (Rural or Urban) tests made to move quietly unless the implements are wrapped with cloth (which suspends the AP bonus and all active magical abilities while bound).
    • Catalyst Overload Risk: If the mantle takes 3 points of damage from a critical strike targeting the body, or if the user suffers a Major Miscast while channelling through the mantle, roll 1d10. On a result of 1, the carnelian rose cracks and discharges, dealing 1 Wound directly to the wearer (ignoring Toughness) and rendering all magical qualities inert until repaired by an artisan.
