Shugendo 318 of the Gentle Pilgrims Conch

Lore:

  • Originating among the mountain ascetics who sought tranquility rather than combat during the early migrations of the First People across Saṃsāra, this ritual instrument was crafted to pacify frightened beasts and bridge misunderstandings between disparate cultures.
  • The original yamabushi practitioners recognized that the primal elements of the world—wind, stone, and spirit—could be blended through breath to soften hardened hearts and quell rising anger before blood was drawn.
  • Each horn was shaped from spiraled shell deposits found near high-altitude mountain springs, then inscribed with harmonic sutras designed to channel the user’s sincere goodwill into the world’s ambient weave.
  • Over centuries of island migration, wandering monks carried these instruments to isolated mountain villages and coastal ports, using the mellow resonance of the conch to earn shelter, warm meals, and trusted passage among distrustful locals.
  • The numerical seal of 318 was stamped into the silver mouthpiece by the artisan guilds of the central cities to certify that the vessel’s acoustic vibration aligned perfectly with the spiritual frequency of peaceful persuasion.

Description:

  • A polished, cream-white mountain conch shell bound in woven vermilion silk cord, fitted with an intricately chased sterling silver rim and mouthpiece.
  • Faint characters of protective sutras are inlaid along the shell’s natural ridges using crushed, pale-blue lapis lazuli and silver dust that shimmer under direct daylight.
  • Two tassels of braided golden thread hang from the main suspension loop, weighted by carved cherry wood beads etched with blossoming plum motifs.
  • The interior spiral of the shell emits a gentle, rhythmic sound like a distant alpine waterfall whenever it is held close to the ear, even when entirely dormant.
  • When blown, the instrument does not produce a harsh blare, but rather a warm, resonant drone that vibrates pleasantly in the chest of anyone standing nearby.

Detailed Stats:

  • Item Tier: Tier 1
  • Rarity: Common
  • Armor Check (AC) Contribution: +0 AC
  • Item Health Points: Maximum Avatar Health Points plus 10 (Resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 1)
  • Resilience: 10
  • Weight: 1.5 pounds
  • Bound Status: Unbound
  • Required Attunement: Simple attunement (1 minute of calm, rhythmic breathing while holding the shell)
  • Component Requirements: Requires no consumed reagents, but functions best when kept clean of dirt and oil using fresh mountain water

Passive Magics:

  • Aura of Approachability: While the conch is openly worn and attuned, the subtle spiritual hum radiating from the shell dispels overt hostility from neutral observers. The avatar gains a +2 bonus to all skill checks made to initiate peaceful conversation, calm skittish domestic animals, or make a favorable first impression with strangers.
  • Soothing Demeanor: The calming resonance tempers the bearer’s voice, granting the avatar advantage on saving throws against becoming Frightened, Shaken, or Insane when subjected to hostile social pressure or supernatural intimidation.
  • Unassuming Presence: Observers scanning the avatar perceive them as an earnest pilgrim rather than a threat, increasing the Difficulty Class by 2 for any hostile creature attempting to identify the avatar as an immediate combatant prior to an engagement.

Activable Magics:

  • Harmonious Breath of Fellowship: As an action, the avatar blows a long, mellow note through the silver mouthpiece directed toward an adjacent sentient creature or beast within 30 feet. The target must make an opposed saving throw against the user’s d20 plus skill check; if the target fails, it cannot take hostile actions against the avatar or their companions for 10 minutes, viewing the user with warmth and hospitality (the Charmed condition). This effect breaks immediately if the target or its allies are attacked or threatened. This ability can be used twice per long rest.
  • Ascetic’s Hospitality Chant: By spending 10 minutes performing a gentle musical meditation with the conch around a communal campfire or dinner circle, the avatar creates an atmosphere of deep kinship. Up to six individuals sharing a meal of at least 20 minutes within this radius gain an additional 1 temporary Hit Point and feel an enduring sense of trust toward the avatar, lowering the Difficulty Class of subsequent persuasion and negotiation tasks by 3 for the next 24 hours.
  • Repentant Echo: As a reaction when an adjacent foe announces an attack against the avatar, the user sounds a quick, sharp burst from the conch. The sudden spiritual tone triggers a pang of sudden hesitation in the attacker; the attacker must make a saving throw against the avatar’s tier check, and on a failure, their attack is canceled and the action is wasted as they are overcome with reluctance to strike the peaceful pilgrim. This can be used once per combat encounter.

Acquisition and Exchange of Pilgrim Conches in Saṃsāra

  • Wandering Minstrel Pavilions and Bardic Instrument Ateliers:
    • Located within the festive cultural districts of central island metropolises or clustered around coastal festival plazas, these boutique shops display handcrafted woodwinds, resonance bells, and carved ceremonial shells mounted along polished cherry-wood walls.
    • In these open ateliers, master luthiers and sound-crafters demonstrate the acoustic warmth of the conch by playing harmonic chords over tea, marketing the piece to traveling diplomats, performers, and emissaries seeking to de-escalate territorial disputes across island boundaries.
    • An unaffiliated traveler purchasing this instrument can expect a negotiated retail cost between 110 silver and 150 silver, while a certified member of a performing troupe or bardic guild benefits from the customary 10% tier reduction, bringing the acquisition price down to 99 silver to 135 silver.
    • When selling an intact conch to a music master, the shopkeeper applies standard haggling margins, reducing the offer based on the selling avatar’s tier level to settle between 80 silver and 100 silver, recorded directly into the seller’s World Bank ledger account.
  • Mountain Hermitage Shrines and Pilgrimage Rest Houses:
    • Situated along the steep stone staircases leading to high volcanic calderas or nestled beside natural geothermal springs, these modest monastic supply rooms are managed by elderly ascetics and mountain guides.
    • Here, conches are kept on woven rush mats before small brass statues, treated not as luxury goods, but as essential tools of spiritual survival designed to pacify territorial beasts and maintain safe passage across wild peaks.
    • Purchasing from a mountain rest house is rooted in communal barter and modest suggested donations; unaffiliated travelers typically pay roughly 10 gold to 12 gold (equivalent to 100 silver to 120 silver), while initiated yamabushi acolytes or recognized pilgrims wearing monastic badges receive the piece for 9 gold to 10.8 gold.
    • Selling a conch back to a hermitage rarely yields metal currency, as the monks maintain minimal worldly coin; instead, they offer store credit in dried medicinal mountain rations, climbing cords, and consecrated spring water, or arrange a modest World Bank deposit of 70 silver to 85 silver.
  • Diplomatic Guildhouses and Envoy Outfitters:
    • Operating within the political quarters of major port cities and capital districts near royal palaces, these stately emporiums cater to ambassadors, negotiators, and multi-timer couriers navigating tense inter-island relations.
    • The conch is presented inside velvet-lined cedar display cases, marketed specifically for its ability to soften hostile negotiations, avert early bloodshed during trade talks, and cultivate immediate rapport among suspicious regional warlords.
    • Because these establishments operate within high-tax municipal zones and carry exclusive ceremonial inventories, the baseline purchase price sits at a premium of 140 silver to 180 silver, though diplomats bearing valid faction seals secure the 10% guild discount.
    • Selling to an envoy outfitter requires passing a strict inspection by an appraiser to ensure the silver inlay and lapis carvings are unmarred; an approved transaction yields roughly 95 silver to 120 silver transferred directly to the seller’s institutional bank balance.
  • Waterfront Marine Outposts and Coral Wharf Traders:
    • Perched on stilts along the edge of expansive barrier reefs and busy island docks where sailing vessels take on cargo, these breezy open-air stalls specialize in oceanic curios, diving gear, and nautical signaling devices.
    • Dockside merchants sell these shells to sea captains and island navigators, who utilize the mellow tone to announce peaceful intentions when docking at foreign island ports or when approaching underwater settlements.
    • Prices at these marine stalls fluctuate drastically according to local supply and westward ocean shipping lanes, operating entirely on a seller’s market where buyer beware reigns supreme; a buyer might pay 85 silver when a trading vessel brings a surplus, or up to 160 silver if local tensions make peaceful passage instruments scarce.
    • Liquidating a conch to wharf peddlers yields between 75 silver and 90 silver in local non-metal tokens or trade commodities like dried sea salt and preserved fish, as maritime vendors avoid holdingWhich item are you referring to? Tactical and Pacifying Roleplay Applications of the Pilgrim Conch Across Saṃsāra

  • Volcanic Calderas and Trembling High-Ridge Passes:
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • When navigating narrow scree ledges above bubbling magma vents where territorial apex predators stalk the ridgelines, the avatar raises the conch shell to their lips and blows a long, undulating tone.
      • The acoustic reverberation travels through the superheated mountain draft, carrying a soothing spiritual cadence that softens the aggressive territorial instincts of mountain-dwelling beasts like horned griffons or ash-crawlers.
      • By roleplaying the calming low frequency of the shell, the avatar encourages the prowling creature to tilt its head in quiet curiosity rather than pouncing, allowing the traveling party to pass without triggering combat.
      • If a tremor shakes the mountain or a predator charges in sudden panic, the avatar activates the Repentant Echo, sounding a sharp, resonant counter-note that strikes the beast’s spiritual core and halts its momentum mid-stride with overwhelming hesitation.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Against entrenched mountain bandits or renegade scouts holding fortified choke points along high volcanic roads, the avatar uses the conch to dismantle hostile formations before swords clash.
      • The avatar steps into plain view unarmed, sounding the Harmonious Breath of Fellowship across the crags; the sound echoes through the volcanic rock, vibrating into the chest cavities of the guards and compelling the lead watchman to lower his crossbow and view the approaching party as humble, welcome guests.
      • By establishing immediate rapport and breaking down aggressive intent, the avatar offensively neutralizes hostile ambushes without shedding a single drop of blood or alerting nearby garrisons.
  • Subterranean Cavern Megacities and Dark Fissures:
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Deep beneath the island crusts in the pitch-black, echoing labyrinths populated by blind predators and paranoid underground outposts, the avatar keeps the conch resting gently against their chest.
      • When cornered in narrow stone tunnels by subterranean horrors that hunt via vibration and auditory echoes, the avatar sounds a low, humming drone that perfectly mimics the harmless vibration of deep underground water flows.
      • The sound soothes the agitation of subterranean swarms, masking the frantic heartbeats of party members and convincing aggressive subterranean stalkers that the intruders pose no threat to their nests.
      • In close quarters, if an ambusher emerges from an overhead stalactite to strike, the avatar blows the Repentant Echo directly into the enclosed space, using the amplified acoustic shockwave to shatter the attacker’s predatory resolve and cancel the strike.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • When infiltrating the fortified gates of a suspicious subterranean clan or hostile dark-cave enclave, the avatar sounds the horn in three slow, rhythmic cadences that carry deep into the stone chambers.
      • The tonal resonance resonates with the innate communal instincts of subterranean humanoids, creating an immediate social opening where the avatar is granted an audience with the enclave’s elder or warlord rather than being impaled on defensive barricades.
      • The avatar utilizes the shell’s lingering harmonic aura during tense diplomatic negotiations, subtly lowering the suspicion of faction leaders and swaying hardline dissenters toward accepting peaceful trade agreements.
  • Open Ocean Voyages and Coral Barrier Reefs:
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Aboard sailing vessels cutting westward against rough sea lanes or navigating treacherous coral reef mazes, oceanic monsters and hostile aquatic species frequently rise to board or capsize passing hulls.
      • Standing upon the bowsprit, the avatar blows the conch toward the churning water; because the shell is an oceanic artifact inscribed with harmonic sutras, the acoustic waves penetrate the water surface with clarity.
      • The deep marine pitch resonates with large sea beasts, leviathans, and territorial reef sharks, pacifying their predatory feeding frenzy and causing them to swim calmly alongside the vessel rather than ramming the rudder.
      • If armed aquatic raiders climb the ship’s netting, the avatar deploys the Repentant Echo right at the gunwale, causing the lead boarding warrior to freeze in sudden remorse and retreat back into the swell.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • When approaching uncharted island atolls, guarded pirate coves, or underwater city habitats, the avatar uses the conch to announce the party’s arrival as a peaceful delegation.
      • The instrument’s tone reverberates across the lagoon, disarming shore batteries, ballista crews, and aquatic patrols by actively invoking the Harmonious Breath of Fellowship.
      • By the time the ship drops anchor, the coastal defenders are predisposed toward welcoming hospitality rather than firing on the hull, completely neutralizing the enemy’s defensive fortifications through non-violent subjugation.
  • Lush Jungle Lowlands and Toxic Mire Swamps:
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • Within humid jungle floors and fetid bogs where primitive tribes, sentient swamp beasts, and lurking ambush predators hide among dense foliage, tension is constant.
      • The avatar winds the vermilion silk cord around their hand and plays a steady, gentle melody while the party marches through muddy trails, signaling non-aggression to any hidden sentries in the canopy.
      • The sound dampens the natural territorial aggression of territorial pack hunters, turning hostile pack beasts into passive observers that keep their distance without lunging from the brush.
      • When establishing a defensible camp in dangerous marshland, the avatar leads the Ascetic’s Hospitality Chant, wrapping the campsite in a pacifying resonance that deters wild animals from prowling near the fire circle while allies eat and rest.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • When encountering hostile indigenous clans or reclusive swamp shamans who view outsiders as invaders to be sacrificed, the avatar uses the conch to overcome cultural barriers and linguistic divides.
      • By channeling the shell’s magic into a single resonant call of greeting, the avatar speaks directly to the shared spirit of the listeners, disarming hostile war parties without requiring a single common spoken word.
      • The magical tone turns an imminent bloodbath into a communal campfire gathering, unlocking peaceful trade opportunities for rare botanical reagents, tree saps, and ancient regional lore.
  • Sky Cities, Zeppelins, and High-Altitude Rotor Barges:
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • On the exposed walkways of flying platforms, swaying rope bridges between mage towers, or open zeppelin flight decks, social and physical confrontations carry the lethal danger of falls from thousands of feet.
      • When sky-pirates, rogue avian sentinels, or tense city watchmen intercept the party with drawn steel, the avatar sounds the conch into the wind, letting the slipstream carry the mellow pitch throughout the vessel.
      • The sound immediately breaks the rising panic and combative frenzy of both crew and attackers, preventing chaotic deck brawls that could puncture gas bags or damage critical steam rotors.
      • If an aggressive adversary attempts to shove a companion off a high ledge, the avatar uses the Repentant Echo reaction, jarring the assailant with sudden moral hesitation that completely wastes their shove action.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • During aerial negotiations aboard luxury airships or within the grand arrival pavilions of floating cloud cities, the avatar plays the conch as an official heraldic overture.
      • The soothing frequency softens the pride and arrogance of high-tier nobility, mages, and merchant lords, causing them to treat the low-tier avatar with unexpected warmth, respect, and generosity.
      • This enables the avatar to offensively bypass bureaucratic checkpoints, secure lucrative guild contracts, and enter restricted high-altitude sanctums without raising alarms or drawing steel.

Perception of Activation:

  • Visual Perception:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • As breath fills the silver mouthpiece, the interior spiral of the shell begins to glow with a steady, warm amber illumination.
      • The carved lapis lazuli sutras across the exterior ridges flare with a soft, pale cyan luminescence, pulsing gently in rhythm with the user’s lungs.
      • Shimmering, dust-like motes of silver light vent quietly from the wide bell of the horn, hanging in the air like suspended morning mist before drifting toward the target.
      • The surrounding environment appears subtly softened around the edges, with harsh shadows receding into warm, golden twilight tones.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • Observers see the cream-colored shell radiate a comforting, hearth-like glow that illuminates the hands and chest of the performer.
      • The inlaid script along the ridges traces bright blue lines of light against the white surface of the conch.
      • Expanding rings of translucent, rippling air roll smoothly outward from the horn, carrying a faint pearlescent shimmer across the intervening space.
    • Positives:
      • The soft amber light provides a non-threatening source of illumination that calms onlookers rather than startling them.
      • The visible ripple of air confirms that the sound wave is properly projecting toward the intended recipient without veering off course.
    • Negatives:
      • The glowing blue characters and bright interior make covert activation impossible in dimly lit or dark surroundings.
      • The lingering motes of silver light leave an unmistakable trace that points directly back to the user’s immediate position.
  • Auditory Perception:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • The air rushing through the spiraled chamber produces a deep, sonorous hum that resonates directly against the user’s jaw, teeth, and collarbone.
      • The sound echoes internally as a tranquil chord, harmonizing the low pitch of an ocean wave with the higher whistling of an alpine breeze.
      • External noise, such as aggressive shouts or whistling wind, momentarily recedes into a muffled, distant background murmur.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • Observers hear a rich, resonant drone that lacks the piercing brassiness of a military trumpet, sounding instead like a gentle temple bell sustained over several seconds.
      • The acoustic wave seems to fill the entire area simultaneously, vibrating pleasantly in the listener’s sternum and inducing an involuntary slowing of their breath.
    • Positives:
      • The acoustic frequency breaks through chaos and confusion without causing pain or hearing discomfort.
      • The drone naturalizes tense environments, overriding sudden jarring noises that could otherwise provoke a fight-or-flight panic.

      • A subtle sweetness, reminiscent of blooming mountain plums and cedar sap, lingers at the edges of each inhalation.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • Those within the path of the acoustic wave notice an immediate clearing of stale air, replaced by the scent of fresh rain settling upon alpine slopes.
      • The sharp, caustic smells of burning sulfur, rotting vegetation, or sweat-soaked leather are noticeably diluted by the clean, damp fragrance.
    • Positives:
      • The refreshing scent provides an instant sense of relief from oppressive, foul-smelling swamp or dungeon atmospheres.
      • It masks the biological scent of panic and adrenaline that predatory beasts often exploit to initiate attacks.
    • Negatives:
      • The distinct scent of high-altitude rain and plum blossoms is unnatural in arid deserts or enclosed metal hulls, signaling supernatural intervention to observant trackers.
      • The intense cleanliness of the aroma can make subsequent rotten smells feel even more jarring once the activation concludes.
  • Gustatory Perception:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • A refreshing, slightly sweet coolness coats the tongue and gums, tasting like melted glacier runoff carrying traces of wild honey.
      • The sensation cleanses away dryness, iron tastes of exertion, or bitter dust from the throat.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • Observers who open their mouths to breathe in the acoustic draft experience a faint sensation of sweet dew settling on their lips.
    • Positives:
      • The cool sensation soothes parched throats, allowing the user to speak clearly and smoothly immediately after playing.
    • Negatives:
      • The lingering sweetness can produce a brief sense of thirst once the effect dissipates, prompting individuals to seek water.
  • Tactile Perception:
    • User’s Perspective:
      • The polished surface of the conch shell grows gently warm against the palms, mimicking the soothing touch of a heated river pebble.
      • A rhythmic, fine vibration pulses through the braided silk cords and into the user’s hands, releasing muscular tension in the arms and shoulders.
      • The avatar feels a gentle, buoyant lift in their posture, as if an invisible supporting current was steadying their footing.
    • Observer’s Perspective:
      • Anyone washed over by the sound waves feels a subtle drop in physical tension; clenched fists loosen, furrowed brows relax, and weapon grips soften.
      • A light, warm breeze brushes past the skin, carrying the sensation of mild spring sunlight touching cold clothing.
    • Positives:
      • The warmth relieves cramped fingers and hand fatigue, facilitating delicate interactions or tool use afterward.
      • The physical wave of relaxation reduces reflexive aggression in targets, making them disinclined to draw bows or raise blades.
    • Negatives:
      • The soothing warmth can induce mild physical lethargy in allies if they remain fully submerged in the resonance for too long.
      • The polished shell becomes slightly slick from condensation as warm breath meets cool air, requiring a secure two-handed grip.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Mind’s Eye Perception:
      • User’s Perspective: Scanning through the Mind’s Eye reveals the hostility ratings and behavioral aggression flags of nearby entities visibly dropping, marked by calm blue status shifts and expanding diplomatic threshold values.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Observers utilizing their Mind’s Eye see the user enveloped in a harmonic resonance field that designates them as a non-combatant emissary, displaying an active aura of fellowship.
      • Positives: Grants precise numerical awareness of an adversary’s emotional state, confirming whether an aggressive entity has genuinely de-escalated.
      • Negatives: Examining too many rapidly fluctuating psychological indicators simultaneously can clutter the user’s mental focus during delicate negotiations.
    • True Sight (Ultraviolet Spectrum):
      • User’s Perspective: In the ultraviolet spectrum, the acoustic wave appears as concentric, undulating bands of radiant violet and teal light rippling outward, temporarily pacifying turbulent magical currents in the local weave.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Observers viewing through True Sight perceive a magnificent blooming lotus pattern of deep violet light unfurling from the mouth of the shell, washing away dark, jagged aura spikes from agitated bystanders.
      • Positives: Clearly reveals the exact spherical boundaries of the charm field, showing which creatures have been touched by the pacifying weave.
      • Negatives: The brilliance of the expanding geometric rings can briefly dazzle viewers examining the area for faint, concealed magical traps.
    • Soul Sense / Spiritual Attunement:
      • User’s Perspective: The user senses a deep, empathetic connection to the ambient life around them, feeling the core fears, griefs, and exhaustion of those nearby as understandable burdens rather than hostile threats.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Allied and neutral souls in the vicinity experience a sudden wave of mutual understanding, instinctively recognizing the performer as an earnest traveler bearing sincere goodwill.
      • Positives: Establishes profound social rapport across cultural, racial, and linguistic divides without requiring a single spoken sentence.
      • Negatives: Experiencing the unshielded emotional strain and sorrows of nearby hostile entities can be emotionally draining for an unprepared user.

Crafting Recipe: Shugendo 318 of the Gentle Pilgrim’s Conch

Materials Needed:

  • Natural Mountain Conch Shell (1.5 pounds) – Sourced from high-altitude mineral spring deposits or uplifted limestone caverns, intact with a continuous inner spiral.
  • Sterling Silver Ingot (0.5 pounds) – Refined silver alloy to form the chased mouthpiece, rim mount, and numerical stamp ring.
  • Woven Vermilion Silk Cord (8 feet) – Braided cords dyed with natural cinnabar pigments, treated with salt water for durability.
  • Lapis Lazuli Chunk (2 ounces) – Deep azure mineral stone, finely pulverized to inlay the exterior mantra carvings.
  • Carved Cherry Wood Beads (2 beads) – Turned from mountain cherry timber and carved with plum blossom motifs.
  • Golden Thread (4 feet) – Fine filament of spun gold and silk to assemble the lower decorative suspension tassels.
  • Tier 1 Magic Crystals (2 units, coin-sized) – Extracted from peaceful or water-attuned Tier 1 creatures, utilized as sacrificial catalytic reagents to permanently channel the enchantment into the shell’s spiral chamber.
  • High-Altitude Spring Water (1 pint) – Pure glacial runoff water used to clean the calcium channels and suspend the mineral slurry.
  • Refined Tree Sap (1 fluid ounce) – Clear biological sap extracted via fluid collector to serve as an adhesive binder for the gemstone inlay.

Tools Required:

  • Fine Chisels and Diamond Gravers – Precision lapidary carving tools for engraving sutras along the ridges of the calcified shell.
  • Jeweler’s Saw and Miniature Hammers – For shaping, chasing, and fitting the sterling silver mouthpiece and decorative rim.
  • Fluid Collector (Syringe Extractor) – Precision extractor used to meter out liquid tree sap without contaminating the powdered stone.
  • Agate Mortar and Pestle – Hardened stone bowl for pulverizing lapis lazuli and sacrificial crystal into microscopic dust.
  • Charcoal Brazier and Blowpipe – Small jeweler’s soldering hearth to anneal and fit the silver fixtures.
  • Felt Polishing Buff and Rottenstone – Fine natural abrasive powders for polishing the shell body to an enamel-like sheen.

Skill Requirements:

  • Lapidary / Shell-Carving: Level 6 or higher (Minimum level 5 required for base crafting, plus 1 additional level to match the Tier 1 item outcome).
  • Jeweler / Silver-Smithing: Level 3 or higher – For hammering, flaring, and chasing the silver mouthpiece and rim to fit the irregular organic profile of the shell.
  • Calligraphy / Inscription: Level 2 or higher – For accurately laying out Sanskrit-derived harmonic sutras across the curved spiraling ridges.
  • Alchemical Crafting: Level 1 or higher – For blending refined sap, pulverized lapis lazuli, and catalytic crystal dust into a stable inlay paste.

Crafting Steps:

  1. Preparation and acoustic cleaning of the shell:
    • Submerge the raw mountain conch in high-altitude spring water to dissolve exterior dirt and sediment.
    • Drill a clean, smooth aperture through the tip of the shell into the primary interior spiral chamber using a fine diamond burr.
    • Flush the interior chambers thoroughly with spring water to ensure unobstructed airflow; test the acoustic draft with a low breath to confirm a clear, deep harmonic whistle.
    • Smooth the exterior whorls and natural calcium ridges using felt polishing buffs and rottenstone until the cream-white surface exhibits a silky, non-abrasive finish.
  2. Fabrication and mounting of the silver mouthpiece and rim:
    • Heat the sterling silver ingot in the jeweler’s brazier and hammer it into a tapered cylindrical cone that matches the bore of the drilled shell tip.
    • Chase fine wave and cloud motifs into the exterior face of the silver mouthpiece, stamping the numerical maker’s mark “318” around the collar.
    • Shape a thin silver band to crimp over the outer lip of the shell’s wide bell, protecting the delicate calcified edges from chipping.
    • Warm-fit the mouthpiece and rim onto the conch, securing the fixtures using a thin layer of refined tree sap without obscuring the interior sound chamber.
  3. Inscription and gemstone inlay:
    • Outline the characters of the peaceful sutras along the natural ridges of the shell using an ink brush and charcoal wash.
    • Carve out the characters to a depth of one millimeter using fine diamond gravers.
    • Pulverize the lapis lazuli into a talc-like powder within the agate mortar.
    • Blend the lapis powder with refined tree sap and spring water to create a thick, cyan-colored lapis paste.
    • Pack the paste firmly into the engraved characters, wiping away excess slurry with a damp linen cloth, and allow the inlay to cure for 12 hours until rock-hard.
  4. Braiding and assembly of the suspension harness:
    • Measure the vermilion silk cord and knot it securely around the waist and collar of the conch using traditional pilgrim binding patterns.
    • Form a wide suspension loop designed to comfortably circle an avatar’s neck, ensuring the shell rests flat against the sternum.
    • Construct two hanging tassels using the golden thread, running the strands through the drilled channels of the carved cherry wood beads.
    • Anchor the tassels beneath the main binding knot, securing the assembly with double-looped overhand bindings to prevent slipping during travel.
  5. Sacrificial crystal awakening and resonance alignment:
    • Grind one coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into fine dust and blend it with the final polish applied to the inner lip of the shell’s bell.
    • Place the second intact Tier 1 magic crystal directly inside the deepest accessible spiral cavity of the horn.
    • The crafter sits in quiet meditation, holding the conch with both hands while drawing deep, steady breaths over the mouthpiece for one full turn (10 minutes).
    • As the crafter’s focused thought resonates with the materials, the intact crystal dissolves into light, passing its latent magical properties permanently into the calcium walls and silver fittings.
    • The completed conch is sounded once with a long, mellow breath to test the resonance; verify that the interior amber glow activates and that the cyan characters illuminate along the shell’s ridges.

Soft-Singing White Spiral 318

In those times when the dirt of the moon-world was still wet like dough, and the seven kings of the high rocks had not yet learned to put words upon sheep-skins, there was a great wandering of the men who had fallen out of the sky-hole. One among these many fallen minds was an old creature whose head had hair like dried swamp-grass. He walked upon his two feet with a crooked stick of mountain-ash, and he carried upon his chest no iron coat, no sharp bronze tooth, and no bag of dried meat. In his chest was only the great cold emptiness of a man who remembers sitting beside a small river in a world that had burned away before the star Helios was put into its circle.

The old man went by the steep way toward the cold cloud-line where the high-springs spill out of the stone like milk. He saw that the world was full of biting teeth and heavy clubs of wood. In the bushes, the great cats that had horns upon their brows were fighting with the scaled bears that crawled out of the mud-holes. When a beast fell upon the red stones, its belly was torn open and its red juices poured upon the gravel, and the other beasts came to put their mouths into the red juices with great barking sounds.

The old man sat upon a flat rock and spoke into his own beard: “Lo, the creatures of this world have died many times, and their anger is like an old stew that has been boiled until the pot turns black. When they see a man who walks upon two sticks, their ears turn back, their tails become stiff like spears, and their bellies demand to crunch his little bones. If I carry a spear of flint, I will kill one, and then three more will smell the fat of my liver and come running. Therefore, I must make a speech that does not come out of the mouth, because their ears do not know the talk of the old cities across the void.”

He went down into the high ditch where the water was white like frost. In that place he found a great white bug-house of stone, which was the hard shell of an old snail of the mountain that had died when the ice-sky fell down in the very first year. The snail-house was curled round and round like a sleeping serpent, and when he blew the dust out of its throat, the stone whistled like the wind passing through an empty bone.

He took the hard shell and washed it with the cold water that has no bugs. He went to the small town of the fire-smiths who beat the white silver upon flat stones. He said to the chief of the bellows: “Hammer for me a small pipe of white silver that will sit upon the snout of the snail-house, so that my wet breath does not rot the stone.” The fire-smith laughed with his broad mouth and spat upon the coals, saying: “Why do you bring a snail-house to a man who makes long knives for the king’s guard? A shell cannot cut a throat, and it cannot turn away an arrow of ash-wood.”

The old man took from his pocket a very small shining drop of glass, which was a crystal he had picked out of the gravel where an old goat had died of peaceful years. When the fire-smith saw the shining drop, his eyes became round like copper plates, for he knew that the crystal held the soft sleep of an animal that had never bitten a man. The smith took his hammer and his small tongs, and he beat the white silver until it was thin like a lily leaf. He wrapped the silver collar about the mouth of the shell and pressed into the silver three scratches and an egg-mark, which in that ancient tongue was named three hundred and eighteen.

Then the old man took the blue stone of lapis that falls from the high cliffs when the frost cracks the stone. He ground the blue stone between two flat slate-tiles until it was blue flour, and he mixed the blue flour with the sticky blood of the high spruce-tree. With a pig’s hair tied to a twig, he painted along the ridges of the snail-house the words that were sung by the grandmothers of the sky-folk when a child had the hot sickness of the throat.

Now it was that the old man walked down the mountain path into the deep valley where the Red-Claw clan had their camp. The men of the Red-Claw clan were very terrible to look upon. They had no shirts upon their bellies, but had painted their flesh with the grease of spotted snakes, and their hands held heavy axes of gray slate with edges that had been rubbed sharp upon river-stones. When the watch-boy on the big rock saw the old man coming down the path, he made a scream like an eagle and threw his slate spear. The spear struck the ground three paces before the old man’s sandals and stood trembling in the turf.

The twelve warriors of the Red-Claw clan ran out of their grass huts with great shouts. Their mouths were full of bad words, and they lifted their axes to split the old man from his head-crown down to his navel, so that his clothes might be divided among their wives and his hair taken to tie upon their shields.

The old man did not raise his wooden stick, nor did he fall upon his knees to cry into the dirt like a woman of the marshes. He lifted the white snail-house to his mouth. His lungs, which were dry like old paper, grew wide with the cold air of the spruce-trees. He blew into the white silver collar.

The sound that came out of the shell was not a bark, nor was it the high shriek of a bronze horn that calls the horses to run into the mud. It was a long, low humming like the noise a mother makes in her throat when the rain is falling upon the thatch and the child is drinking from her breast. The sound went out across the stones like a thick wave of warm water. The blue letters that were painted along the shell’s ribs began to shine like small lamps of blue moss, and from the wide belly of the shell there came a pale smoke that had no stink of burning, but smelled of honey-comb and ripe plums that have fallen into sweet grass.

The warrior who had his axe lifted high above his ear stopped his arm in the middle of the sky. His fingers became soft like wet clay, and the heavy axe of gray slate fell out of his fist, tumbling into the grass without making a wound. The warrior looked at his own knuckles and then he looked at the old man, and his face became strange like a man who has suddenly remembered that he has left his fat child asleep beside an open well.

The second warrior, whose name was the Bone-Breaker, had his knees go loose like the legs of a newborn calf. He sat down upon the gravel, and the foam that was upon his mouth turned into clear spit. He spoke in a very small voice: “Why do we stand with heavy stones in our fists when the grandfather has walked so far from the snow-line without shoes?”

Then the wives of the clan came running out of the huts with their earthen bowls, for the sound of the horn had entered into the cook-sheds. They did not bring boiling water to throw upon the stranger, but they brought wooden bowls of hot barley porridge that had pieces of dried fish inside. They sat around the old man in a ring upon the green moss, and the warriors who had intended to break his ribs sat beside him and watched his mouth chew the warm grain.

The chief of the clan, who had killed nineteen men with his slate club, took his own red wool blanket and put it over the old man’s shoulders, saying: “Old father of the white horn, do not leave our ditch. If you sit in our ditch and make the snail-house sing when the black bears come down from the rocks, our children will grow tall and our goats will not drop their milk in fear.”

The old man ate the porridge until the bowl was scraped white with his horn spoon. He looked upon the twelve warriors and he said: “I cannot sleep in your ditch, because on the other side of the ridge there are men who have bronze knives, and they are sharpening them on stones because they think that your brothers are coming to burn their grain-bins. If I sleep in your blanket, the bronze knives will meet the slate axes in the dark water of the river, and the fish will swim away from the great stink of corpses.”

Then he stood upon his feet and took his ash-stick. The warriors walked behind him to the edge of their territory, carrying his basket and touching his hem with their thumbs, which is the mark of children who do not wish their teacher to walk out of the door.

He walked over the high pass to the country of the bronze-knives, and when they saw him, they also ran out with their curved irons to stick him through the ribs. But he blew again the white snail-house, and their knives fell into the dirt like dry pine-needles, and they brought to him sweet melons and roasted fat, asking him to sit upon their stone bench and be their uncle.

Thus it was that throughout forty years of snow and forty years of green grass, the man who was called Three Hundred Eighteen walked from the salt-marshes to the high calderas. Wherever he went, the kings forgot their war-flags, the wild dogs stopped their howling, and the women put honey into the porridge of travelers who had no names.

Moral of the Story: The sharpest tooth is broken when it strikes against stone, but the hardest heart is made soft when the breath of peace is blown through a crooked path, for no man can hold an iron knife in his fist while his ears are listening to the sweet song of his own home.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

Ritual Horagai of the Mountain Recluse

  • Description: A heavy, cream-white trumpet fashioned from a large alpine conch shell, bound in faded vermilion silk cord and capped with a hand-chased sterling silver mouthpiece. Traces of lapis lazuli and silver dust fill archaic glyphs carved along the whorls. When blown, it emits a vibrant, resonant drone that induces profound emotional calm and dispels homicidal or panicky impulses.
  • Type: Spiritual Artifact / Pacifying Relic
  • Weight: 1.5 lbs
  • Cost: Invaluable; held as a sacred heirloom by secluded yamabushi shrines or cataloged in private antique collections.
  • Sanity Loss: None to attune or blow. If an observer is currently suffering from Temporary Insanity or an acute Bout of Madness, hearing the horn allows an immediate SAN check; a success shortens the episode or reduces violent hysteria to quiet weeping.

Game Mechanics:

  • Aura of Fellowship (Passive): While worn openly over the chest and kept in good repair, the wearer gains a bonus die (+1D) on all Charm, Persuade, and Animal Handling rolls against non-hostile or suspicious humanoids and beasts.
  • Pacifying Drone (Active): The investigator spends 1 Magic Point and takes a full combat round to sound a sustained note through the silver collar, making an Art/Craft (Musical Instrument) or POW roll. All non-mythos humanoids and natural animals within 30 feet must succeed on an opposed POW roll or become completely pacified for 1D6 rounds. Affected targets drop drawn weapons, cannot initiate hostile actions, and view the blower with peaceful reverence. Any direct physical assault against an affected target immediately breaks the effect for that individual.
  • Repentant Stumble (Reaction): Once per combat encounter, when an adjacent human attacker declares a melee strike against the user, the bearer may spend 2 Magic Points and use a reaction to sound a sharp, discordant burst. The attacker must make an Extreme CON or POW roll; failing the check causes the attacker to abort the strike entirely as overwhelming moral hesitation causes their weapon arm to go limp.
  • Scent and Purity: The instrument dispels the biological stench of fear, granting a bonus die (+1D) to Stealth or Disguise rolls when trying to pass unmolested through territorial dog packs or wild animal ranges.

Blades in the Dark

The Recluse’s Spiral Horn

  • Classification: Arcane Oddity / Religious Implement
  • Load: 1 Load (Worn openly on a shoulder sling or neck cord)
  • Quality: Tier I fine item

Item Features:

  • Fine Craftsmanship: A spiraled mountain conch shell bound in cinnabar silk with silver fittings and lapis-filled sutras, tuned to resonate with peaceful ghost-field vibrations.
  • Harmonic Drone: Emits a warm acoustic resonance that softens aggression in living minds and dampens erratic surges within the local ghost field.

Game Mechanics:

  • Aura of Concord: When you wear the horn openly and attempt to calm a tense social confrontation or make a favorable first impression, gain +1d to your Consort or Sway roll.
  • Harmonious Breath: Spend 1 Stress to blow a deep, vibrating chord across a room or street. Any immediate threat from living foes or aggressive guard beasts hesitates. You gain Potency on your next action roll to de-escalate violence, negotiate safe withdrawal, or secure temporary sanctuary.
  • Cease Hostilities: When a confrontation turns violent, you may push yourself (2 Stress) to unleash a commanding, resonant blast. Treat this as an action with Great Effect to freeze an active melee engagement in place, forcing attackers to lower their weapons and enter dialogue unless attacked first.
  • Repentant Echo (Armor): You may mark this item as your Armor tick to counter a physical melee strike from an adjacent human foe. Instead of taking harm, the horn sounds a sharp spiritual chord that causes the assailant to falter and drop their weapon, reducing the incoming Harm level by 1.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)

Conch of the Mountain Pilgrim

  • Wondrous Item, common (requires attunement)
  • Item Category: Worn (neck)
  • Weight: 1.5 lbs

Item Properties:

  • Approachable Aura: While you wear this horn openly and are attuned to it, you have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks made to influence neutral or friendly creatures, as well as Wisdom (Animal Handling) checks made to calm non-hostile beasts.
  • Steeled Resolve: You have advantage on saving throws against being frightened.

Active Properties:

  • Harmonious Breath of Fellowship: As an action, you sound a resonant, low-pitched tone through the mouthpiece targeting one humanoid or beast within 30 feet that can hear you. The target must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by you for 1 hour. While charmed in this way, the target is peaceful, regards you as a trusted guest or friend, and will not take aggressive actions against you or your companions. The effect ends immediately if you or your companions do anything harmful to the target. Once used, this property cannot be used again until you finish a long rest.
  • Ascetic’s Hospitality: If you spend 10 minutes playing gentle, meditative tones on the conch during a rest while sharing a meal with up to six creatures, all participating creatures gain 1d4 temporary hit points at the end of the rest. In addition, those creatures have advantage on Insight and Perception checks made during the next 8 hours to identify incoming threats to the campsite.
  • Repentant Echo: When a creature within 5 feet of you makes a melee attack roll against you, you can use your reaction to sound a sharp, startling chord from the horn. The attacker must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature’s attack automatically misses as it is overwhelmed by a sudden wave of reluctance, and its speed is reduced to 0 until the end of its turn. You can use this reaction once per short or long rest.

Knave (Second Edition)

Mountain Pilgrim’s Shell-Horn

  • Item Slots: 1 Slot
  • Item Quality: 3/3 Durability
  • Hands Required: 2 Hands to blow, 0 Hands when worn on its neck sling
  • Base Value: 120 copper coins (subject to regional barter and shrine value)

Item Mechanics:

  • Peaceful Demeanor: While the conch is worn openly around the neck, you gain a +2 bonus to reaction rolls when encountering non-hostile travelers, peasants, or city guards.
  • Pacifying Tone: In an exploration turn or during encounter setup, you may spend your action to blow a long, resonant note. All beasts and sentient humanoids with 1 Hit Die or less within hearing distance must make a Wisdom saving throw. If they fail, they refuse to initiate combat and will accept food, safe passage, or basic conversation, remaining peaceful as long as no weapons are drawn against them.
  • Halt Strike: When an enemy within arm’s reach attacks you in melee, you may use your reaction to sound a sharp blast. The attacker must make a Charisma saving throw. On a failure, the strike is aborted and the attacker’s turn immediately ends as their grip loosens in sudden confusion. This feature can be used once per combat encounter.
  • Durability Degradation: If you suffer a fall from a height or take direct crushing damage to the chest, make an Item Save for the horn (d20, succeeding on an 11 or higher). On a failure, the conch shell cracks along its whorls, losing 1 Quality. At 0 Quality, the sound chamber is breached and the horn cannot produce magical tones until repaired with fresh resin and silver binding.

Fate Core

Shugendo Conch of the Gentle Ascetic

  • Aspect: Resonant Conch of Peaceful Intent
  • Aspect: Soothing Melody of the Mountain Shrine
  • Aspect: Inlaid Invocations of Fellowship

Stunts:

  • Disarming Cadence: Because you openly wear and play this sacred shell horn, you gain a +2 to Rapport when creating an advantage or overcoming obstacles to soothe agitated crowds, calm frightened beasts, or establish peaceful relations during a tense first encounter.
  • Harmonious Intercession: Once per session, you may spend a Fate Point and sound a deep, resonant tone with the conch to interrupt a confrontation. All NPC combatants in the scene must immediately pause their aggressive actions and listen to your proposal, creating the scene aspect Ceasefire of the Mountain Recluse with one free invoke. If anyone initiates an attack, the aspect is immediately removed.
  • Repentant Stumble: Once per conflict, when an adjacent opponent attacks you with a physical strike, you may sound a sharp counter-note as a defense action using Rapport instead of Athletics or Physique. If you succeed, you neutralize the strike, and the attacker gains the situational aspect Reluctant to Harm with one free invoke.
  • Ascetic’s Hospitality: When you spend a scene of rest and meal-sharing while softly playing the horn with allies, all participating player characters may clear one additional physical stress box or gain a +1 bonus to their next defense roll in the upcoming scene.

Cypher System / Numenera (Discovery & Destiny)

  • Level: 2
  • Form: A polished white spiral shell banded in silver and vermilion silk, inlaid with glowing lapis characters, fitted with a chased silver mouthpiece.
  • Kind: Artifact (Depletion: 1 in 1d20, checked per pacifying blast or defensive interruption)

Game Mechanics:

  • Passive Aura of Accord: While worn openly around the neck, the faint harmonic hum radiating from the shell eases tensions. All social interaction tasks aimed at establishing trust, making peace, or calming feral beasts are eased by one step.
  • Harmonious Breath (Action): The user blows a long, vibrant tone through the mouthpiece targeting a creature within short range. The user makes an Intellect roll against the target’s level. On a success, the target ceases all hostile actions and regards the user as a trusted companion (charmed) for ten minutes. Any violent action taken against the target or its companions immediately ends this effect. Roll for Depletion upon use.
  • Repentant Echo (Action / Reaction): Once per combat encounter, when an adjacent foe initiates an attack against the user, the bearer may blow a sharp, disruptive acoustic burst. Roll for Depletion upon use.
  • Campfire Fellowship: If the user spends ten minutes playing gentle melodies around a resting site while sharing food with up to six companions, each participant adds +1 to their next recovery roll made within the next 28 hours.

If the user scores a raise, the attacker is also Shaken.

  • Mind-Quieting Drone (Active): As a Major Action, the user sounds a sustained, low-pitched note through the horn, rolling Magic + Influence against a threshold equal to the highest Willpower among targets within Close range (5 meters). If successful, non-hostile observers, street guards, or territorial paracritters are overcome with a wave of deep calm; they lower their weapons, will not initiate aggressive actions for 3 combat turns, and view the bearer as an innocent pilgrim. Hostile engagement or attacks by the user or allies immediately breaks this effect.
  • Repentant Hesitation (Reaction): Once per combat encounter, when an adjacent physical opponent declares a close-combat attack against the user, the bearer may spend an Immediate Action (or interrupt with 5 Initiative Score) to blow a sharp, resonant counter-note. The user makes an opposed test using Magic + Willpower versus the attacker’s Willpower + Logic. If the user achieves net hits, the attacker is struck by sudden moral confusion and muscular hesitation, causing their melee attack to automatically abort and ending their action.
  • Focused Calming: The soothing vibration grants the bearer a +1 dice pool bonus to resist magical or chemical fear effects and reduces the mental stun penalty from intimidation by 1.

  • Resonant Pacification (Two Actions – Concentrate, Auditory, Mental): Frequency: Once per day. The user blows a deep, resonant tone targeting one living creature within 30 feet that can hear. The target must attempt a DC 18 Will saving throw:

  • Weight: 1 kg
  • Cost: Cr 350 (exotic trade good prized by frontier diplomats and xenobiologists)

  • Infrasonic De-escalation: As a significant action during an encounter, the traveler blows a long, measured tone into the silver mouthpiece. All biological creatures and un-augmented humanoids within 10 meters must make an Average (8+) SOC or END check (whichever is higher). Creatures that fail are subdued by the acoustic resonance; they will not draw weapons or initiate violence for 1D minutes, remaining passive unless directly threatened, attacked, or physically restrained.
  • Sudden Acoustic Interruption: Once per combat engagement, if an opponent at Personal range attempts a physical melee attack, the user may expend their reaction to emit a concussive, point-blank blast from the shell horn. The attacker must make an Average (8+) END check. Failure causes the attacker to flinch and drop their weapon, completely wasting their attack action for that round.
  • Morale Stability: Listening to the melodic resonance of the horn during shipboard downtime or wilderness rest restores 1 point of lost characteristic damage caused by stress, fatigue, or social panic.
