Item Tier and Rarity: Common (Tier 1)
Specific Gear Slot: Waist Slot
Lore:
- During the transitional eras following the elemental genesis of Saṃsāra, early ascetics who settled along volatile coastline fissures sought dependable physical foci to manipulate ambient elemental discharges without succumbing to the raw friction of the lunar atmosphere.
- Finding themselves displaced from foreign memories where sacred fibers marked thresholds between the sacred and the profane, weavers gathered tough inland marsh reed fibers and treated them with distilled tree saps extracted via early fluid collectors.
- The strands were tightly twisted in a counter-clockwise pattern to imitate the westward pull of the oceanic currents, creating a localized boundary weave that alters raw elemental matter passing across its threshold.
- Designated under index 482 by early enchanter guilds, these ropes were created as portable foci for apprentice transmuters needing to convert harsh wild energy into usable alchemical bases during field expeditions across the island continents.
Physical Description:
- The item presents as a thick, dual-ply braided rope cord spun from coarse, flaxen reed fibers, measuring approximately six feet in total length with frayed tasseled terminals.
- Interwoven along the spiral cord are four zigzagging strips of stiffened parchment parchment parchment-shide treated with hardened sap, hanging downward like stylized lightning bolts that gently rustle even when indoor air is completely still.
- Bound to the central knot of the cord is a small, hollow ceramic token containing three miniature tier 1 magic crystalline cells that softly hum with an amber glow when exposed to ambient temperature shifts.
- When tied securely around the waist of an avatar, the fibers subtly tighten to fit the wearer’s physical frame, radiating a faint smell of petrichor and ozone whenever elemental forces approach within striking distance.
Item Detailed Stats:
- Item Health Points: Maximum avatar hit points plus 10 (calculated from 10 resilience times tier 1).
- Attuned Armor Check (AC): +1 AC bonus to the avatar’s total Armor Check.
- Physical Weight: 2 pounds mundane weight (becomes 0 pounds if stored within personal extradimensional storage containers).
- Attunement Time: 1 minute of active concentration (or 10 minutes ritual attunement if previously deactivated via an targeted item attack).
- Attunement Limit: Occupies 1 attuned gear slot of the 10 allowable attuned items openly worn by a tier 1 avatar.
- Breaking Threshold: Functions normally until reaching 5 or fewer Hit Points, at which point the braided fibers unravel and all magical functions cease until repaired by an artisan with appropriate leatherworking or tailoring proficiency.
- Component Recovery: Upon reaching 0 Hit Points, the item is destroyed, leaving behind 1 tier 1 magic crystal cell and 2 pounds of mundane hempen cord.
Passive Magic Properties:
- Boundary of Purification: The avatar gains an innate resistance against environmental atmospheric hazards, reducing the duration of hazardous terrain effects caused by mundane or low-tier wild elemental steam, smoke, or scalding spray by half.
- Catalytic Weft: Any natural liquid, mud, or moisture that touches the cord while it is openly worn is continuously separated and filtered, distilling non-magical impurities and rendering up to one waterskin of brackish surface water drinkable over the course of one hour.
- Transmutative Grounding: Whenever the wearer is subjected to elemental damage of cold, fire, or lightning, the miniature crystalline token absorbs the kinetic surge, granting the wearer a +1 bonus on subsequent saving throws against forced movement or being knocked prone until the end of their next turn.
Activable Magic Properties:
- Elemental Weave Inversion: As an action, the wearer grasps the central knot and speaks an incantation, spending 1 charge to designate a 5-foot-radius ring centered on themselves for 1 minute; any hostile non-magical puddle, ice sheet, or loose gravel within this ring is instantly transmuted into harmless, soft dry sand. (Item contains 3 charges, replenishing 1 charge upon the completion of a full long rest; if the last charge is expended, roll a d20, and on a roll of 1 the ceramic token cracks, rendering the activable abilities inert until repaired).
- Cordon of Aqueous Conversion: As an action, the avatar unties the rope and lays it in an enclosed loop upon solid ground or shallow water up to 10 feet in diameter; any mundane fluid inside the loop thickens over 6 seconds into a gelatinous, non-slip treadable membrane capable of supporting up to 500 pounds for 10 minutes before dissolving back into natural fluid.
- Threshold Reversal: As a prepared reaction taken when struck by an elemental ranged attack, the wearer channels focus through the hanging paper markers to alter the incoming kinetic force, reducing the incoming damage by 1d4 points (the tier 1 die) and transmuting the dispersed energy into a momentary harmless cloud of scented floral mist.

Shops, Acquisition, and Commerce of the Shimenawa
- Family-Run Cordwainer and Alchemical Weavery Shops: These establishments are independent, family-operated “mom and pop” workshops typically found nestled along the mid-tier artisan streets of coastal port cities and large island capitals. The proprietors are generational artisans who harvest local marsh reeds and weave them by hand, operating without corporate charters or chain distribution. When an avatar enters seeking to purchase the Shimenawa 482 of Primordial Distillation, the merchant evaluates the buyer’s demeanor, guild standing, and current demand. Suggested base valuations for common Tier 1 gear sit near 10 to 15 gold pieces, yet because pricing is governed by a sellers’ market and local availability, an artisan facing reed shortages or high monster threats along trade routes might ask 18 to 22 gold pieces. If the buyer holds recognized membership in an affiliated alchemical or tailors’ guild, the shopkeeper applies the customary guild courtesy discount of 10% multiplied by the character’s tier level (a 10% discount for a Tier 1 buyer, reducing an 18 gold price down to 16 gold and 2 silver). When a character sells the cord back to such a shopkeeper, the merchant haggles down around 10% times the character’s tier from their appraised value, offering roughly 7 to 9 gold pieces, and immediately routes the proceeds through the seller’s World Bank ledger while recording the transaction in their local registry ledger.
- Adventuring Guildhall Supply Depots and Outfitter Posts: Situated inside the designated administrative quarters of major fortified cities exceeding five thousand residents, these supply depots are managed under the supervision of appointed guild masters and military logistics officers. The stock here consists primarily of recovered expedition surplus, gear brought in from monster bounties, and items commissioned for border patrol scouting. To purchase the item from a guild supply depot, the character must visit the front counter in person, where the clerk offers the cord at standard full catalog valuation, typically priced between 12 and 16 gold pieces for outsiders. Registered guild members in good standing receive the standard 10% price deduction for Tier 1 status. If the avatar sells the item here, the guild outfitter calculates the purchase price based on the utility of the transmutation focus for boundary defense, paying roughly 8 to 10 gold pieces directly deposited to the World Bank account. The depot officer logs the avatar’s identity, item serial marks, and previous owner history, warning the seller that local tax assessors and garrison captains routinely review depot acquisition sheets.
- Rural Boundary Shrines and Waystation Herbalists: Located along overland roadway checkpoints, outskirts of small farming hamlets, and coastal wharf junctions, these small roadside stalls are run by solitary transmuters, hedge herbalists, or shrine caretakers. These shops operate in regions where wild magic lulls, strange weather, and elemental pests frequently contaminate irrigation ditches and wells. Because these establishments are far removed from metropolitan trade routes and must transport their raw materials through areas rife with highwaymen and feral beasts, the cost of access is significantly higher. The vendor may demand 20 to 25 gold pieces for the cord, or insist on an equivalent value paid in regional non-metal tender or base barter commodities. When buying from an adventurer, these rural herbalists possess extremely limited coin reserves and will outright refuse transactions if they lack liquid funds; when they do buy, they offer steep underbids of 4 to 6 gold pieces or barter using medicinal saps, rations, and mundane travel gear rather than precious metals.
- Unregulated Alleyway Stalls and Coastal Black-Market Exchanges: Operating within secluded back alleys of port cities, beneath wharf undercrofts, or inside hidden alcoves of subterranean megacities, these shadowy vendors deal exclusively in untracked goods, salvaged battlefield wreckage, and items slipped past regional tax barriers. Black-market merchants maintain zero affiliations with the World Bank, reject ledger-based digital-style mind transactions, and deal strictly in physical coinage, favoring cold gold pieces or localized bullion tokens. When buying the cord from a black-market broker, the buyer pays full market rate with zero guild reductions, often marked up to 25 or 30 gold pieces if municipal guards have recently cracked down on import channels. Conversely, if an avatar arrives to sell the Shimenawa to a black-market fence, the merchant asks no questions, records no names, and provides complete anonymity regarding provenance. If the fence has an immediate client seeking boundary-purification foci to navigate hazardous wild magic zones, they will pay a premium of up to 14 to 18 gold pieces in physical coin—nearly double standard merchant payout—though if the fence has excess inventory, their cash offer may drop to 5 gold pieces on a take-it-or-leave-it basis.
Tactical Roleplay and Environmental Applications of the Shimenawa
- Coastal Reefs and Tidal Flats (Defensive Utility): Navigating the jagged coral shelves and shifting intertidal shallows of Saṃsāra’s coastlines presents constant hazards from sudden tidal swells and scalding volcanic water plumes. Defensively, the avatar wades through surging spray with the braided cord cinched tightly over their sash, letting the passive Catalytic Weft filter salt crust and clinging ocean brine from their lower garments. When an unexpected surge traps the party against an exposed reef wall, the avatar spends an action to unbind the cord and fling it outward across a churning tidal pool, invoking the Cordon of Aqueous Conversion. The foaming sea surface within the loop congeals into a thick, semi-solid amber film capable of supporting travelers across the gap. If a predatory crustacean or brine elemental lunges from the depths, the avatar uses a prepared reaction to channel the incoming strike into the dangling talisman tags, utilizing Threshold Reversal to blunt the impact by their tier 1 die while transmuting the violent ocean spray into a burst of dry, scented cedar mist.
- Coastal Reefs and Tidal Flats (Offensive Utility): In offensive maneuvers across rocky shoals, the avatar exploits the cord’s grounding properties to outmaneuver feral aquatic beasts. When closing distance with an armored shore-crawler across a slick mudbank, the avatar rushes into the combat radius without fear of slipping, as the cord’s Transmutative Grounding provides sure footing against unstable mud and shifting sand. Upon positioning within striking reach, the avatar grips the central ceramic talisman as an action, calling upon the Elemental Weave Inversion. A five-foot radius around the avatar flashes with dull amber luminescence, instantly evaporating the standing saltwater and transmuting the slippery algae beneath the enemy’s claws into fine, loose sand. The sudden shift in surface friction strips the creature of its footing, leaving it off-balance and vulnerable to follow-up strikes from the avatar’s main hand weapon before the tide can refill the depression.
- Dense Volcanic Jungles and Bogs (Defensive Utility): Within the inland swamps and volcanic rainforests of the island continents, stagnant mires emit noxious vapors while acidic tree sap oozes from hostile plant life. During overland travel through these tracts, the avatar relies on the Boundary of Purification to mitigate the debilitating sting of natural acid bogs and thick sulfur fumes drifting downwind from active caldera vents. When setting up an encampment in a low-lying bog, the avatar uncoils the six-foot rope and establishes an enclosed circle around their sleep roll. The rope actively draws the putrid, foul-smelling bog water seepages beneath it and purifies the moisture, transmuting the immediate perimeter into dry, packed peat. Should a territorial swamp ooze or toxic creeper drop from the canopy with an acidic splash, the avatar’s attuned threshold absorbs the caustic burst, mitigating the initial burn and converting the corrosive droplets into inert, harmless moisture.
- Dense Volcanic Jungles and Bogs (Offensive Utility): When hunting feral predators or harvesting ingredients from aggressive flora, the cord serves as an active environmental disruptor. As predatory raptors or hybridized jungle beasts charge through dense undergrowth, the avatar advances to intercept them at a muddy bottleneck. Activating the Cordon of Aqueous Conversion across a patch of quicksand or deep mire, the avatar steps firmly across the newly solidified gelatinous surface to draw the foe’s attention. As the beast lunges forward to meet them, the avatar steps beyond the boundary and triggers the Elemental Weave Inversion, violently transmuting the boggy slush beneath the charging creature into shifting gravel and loose silt. The abrupt collapse of the creature’s running path disrupts its momentum, allowing party members to strike while the target struggles against the transmuted terrain.
- Subterranean Caverns and Magma Tunnels (Defensive Utility): Deep within the dark cavern networks beneath the island crusts, high magic pressure zones collide with intense geothermal vents, creating pockets of superheated steam and unstable shale. As the party explores these subterranean reaches, the avatar uses the cord’s passive traits to shield against the scorching heat of ambient steam leaks, allowing them to scout narrow passages that would scald unprotected skin. In encounters with magma-born beasts or tunnel burrowers that trigger ceiling collapses, the avatar holds the central knot ready. When a fiery discharge or falling volcanic slag strikes the avatar, Threshold Reversal activates instantly: the kinetic shock is dampened, and the superheated rock is transmuted into a mild shower of falling dried reed chaff that settles harmlessly to the stone floor.
- Subterranean Caverns and Magma Tunnels (Offensive Utility): In cavern skirmishes where maneuverability is confined by narrow rock ledges, the avatar uses the cord to alter choke points to their tactical advantage. When facing a subterranean construct or armored burrowing beast, the avatar casts the rope across a pool of hot mineral runoff or magma slurry edge, utilizing the Cordon of Aqueous Conversion to construct a solid, temporary bridge over a lethal drop. After enticing the adversary onto this narrow walkway, the avatar uses an action to dismiss or alter the focal boundary, destabilizing the transmuted ledge beneath the foe. In close-quarters combat on loose scree, activating the Elemental Weave Inversion clears away jagged basalt fragments within five feet, granting the avatar a stable, debris-free platform while the surrounding enemies must maneuver across shifting, razor-sharp obsidian rubble.
- Sky Platforms and Steampunk Engine Rooms (Defensive Utility): Aboard high-altitude zeppelins, floating cloud city docks, or the mechanical machinery decks of gnomish workshops, the environment is dominated by high-pressure steam pipes, spinning mechanical pulleys, and torrential atmospheric rain. When an engine pipe ruptures or a boiler vents scalding elemental steam across the deck, the avatar’s Boundary of Purification prevents immediate heat exhaustion, reducing the hazard to manageable levels. If high winds or enemy deck-sweepers attempt to push the avatar over the edge of an aerial gangway, Transmutative Grounding anchors their center of gravity, resisting the force of the gale. Furthermore, any condensed water dripping from overhead cooling shafts onto the avatar’s waist is constantly channeled through the cord, keeping clothing dry and preventing hazardous electrical or arcane conduits from conducting through the avatar’s attire.
- Sky Platforms and Steampunk Engine Rooms (Offensive Utility): In boarding actions or confrontations amidst industrial machinery, the avatar wields the cord to compromise an opponent’s environmental control. When clashing with rival technomancers or airship boarders on rain-slicked metal plating, the avatar triggers the Elemental Weave Inversion. The slippery condensation coating the steel grid beneath the enemy’s boots is instantaneously transmuted into dry, gritty sand, fouling the traction of motorized footwear or causing running foes to stumble into surrounding mechanical assemblies. Against foes wielding steam-powered weaponry or elemental fire canisters, the avatar readies a reaction: as a pressurized burst of scalding vapor is fired, the avatar’s talisman catches the cone of energy, absorbing the kinetic impact with Threshold Reversal and transmuting the scalding cloud into a localized, cool fog that obscures the enemy’s line of sight without causing harm.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective (Five Senses):
- Sight: The user witnesses the central knot of the braided cord flash with a bright, ember-like amber brilliance. A translucent, circular ring of pale gold light ripples outward across the ground, and the dangling paper shide snap taut, illuminating surface micro-fissures, moisture droplets, and terrain imperfections in sharp relief.
- Hearing: A low, rhythmic resonance hums directly against the user’s pelvic bones, accompanied by a sound akin to rushing dry grain through a chute followed by the crisp crackle of lightning-struck sand.
- Smell: The user’s nostrils fill with an intense burst of dry petrichor, sharp ozone, and the distinct scent of sun-baked river reeds and kiln-fired ceramic.
- Touch: The cord cinches firmly about the waist with a sudden tightening sensation, radiating a dry, soothing heat through clothing directly into the core torso, accompanied by a static prickle across the fingertips as the hands channel the focus.
- Taste: An astringent, mineral copper tang coats the back of the user’s tongue and throat, dry like limestone dust settling after a masonry collapse.
- User’s Perspective (Extra-Sensory Perceptions):
- Mind’s Eye Insight: The user’s Mind’s Eye immediately experiences a sharp, mathematical clarity regarding surface tension and soil density within the active radius, displaying numeric shifts in friction coefficients and structural integrity.
- Transmutative Tug: The user perceives a spatial tug in the lower gut, feeling the elemental weave unspool and re-knot itself as raw physical matter is altered from damp instability into dry compliance.
- Vessel Grounding: A profound metaphysical anchoring settles into the possessing soul, giving the temporary sensation that the avatar’s limbs are fused directly into the bedrock of the moon.
- Observer’s Perspective (Five Senses):
- Sight: Observers see the woven hemp-like fibers around the user’s waist begin to glow from within, followed by the three embedded crystal cells flaring like polished molten honey. A shimmering ring of golden light expands across the floor, causing muddy terrain to visibly blanch, crystallize, and crumble into dry, pale grit within seconds.
- Hearing: Observers hear a sudden, sharp snap like a whip cracking through damp air, followed by a sustained, low-pitched vibration that rattles loose scabbards and small buckles nearby.
- Smell: A wave of warm, ionized air washes outward from the user, carrying the scorched aroma of roasted river straw and hot stone.
- Touch: Bystanders standing within the five-foot perimeter feel the soles of their boots suddenly grip dry, coarse particles as standing water vanishes, accompanied by a faint draft of rising warm air against their shins.
- Taste: Those close to the perimeter catch a fleeting taste of dry chalk or alkaline dust carried on the expanding thermal draft.
- Observer’s Perspective (Extra-Sensory Perceptions):
- Mind’s Eye Ripple: Observers focusing their Mind’s Eye see the user’s immediate aura harden, showing a brief visual flash of increased defensive thresholds and altered local geometry.
- Arcane Vacuum Sensation: Creatures sensitive to the weave sense a momentary hollow in the local magic pressure, as if ambient elemental moisture were abruptly ripped from the surrounding air and compressed into the ground.
- Positives:
- Eliminates hazardous terrain such as slippery mud, standing puddles, and thin ice sheets instantly within the designated boundary.
- Imparts immediate physical stability and traction, reducing susceptibility to knockdowns and forced environmental movement.
- Alerts allies to the defensive threshold via clear visual and auditory cues without requiring shouted warnings during chaotic combat turns.
- Neutralizes conductive moisture, lowering risks associated with ambient electrical or scalding elemental discharges.
- Negatives:
- The sudden flash of amber light and loud resonance immediately breaks stealth, revealing the user’s exact position to all observers in dark or quiet areas.
- The intense mineral taste and dry heat can induce sudden thirst and mild throat irritation for the user during strenuous exertion.
- The dry, dusty particulate cloud generated by the transmutation can temporarily sting the eyes of nearby allies who lack protective eye gear.
- The sharp pull on the elemental weave can be detected by hostile creatures or spellcasters monitoring local arcane pressure fluctuations.
Recipe: Weaving the Cord of Primordial Thresholds
Materials Needed:
- Three mature river reed stalks harvested from a freshwater delta or tidal marsh.
- Four ounces of resinous tree sap harvested using a fluid collector from a living ironwood or deep-marsh willow.
- Four strips of parchment or cured animal vellum measuring two inches wide by eight inches long.
- One ounce of fine ceramic clay mixed with powdered riverbed silt.
- Three Tier 1 magic crystal cells (each coin-sized, recovered from slain magical fauna or refined from raw arcane deposits).
- One pint of fresh well water or distilled mineral runoff for kneading and cord tempering.
Tools Required:
- One manual fluid collector (equipped with a hollow extraction needle and vacuum plunger).
- One cord-twisting spindle or weighted drop hook.
- One leathercrafting or parchment shears.
- One miniature kiln or portable alchemical burner capable of firing low-temperature ceramics.
- One bone stylus or carving needle for scribing transmutation runes.
Skill Requirements:
- Weaving or Cordwaining: Level 2 or higher (necessary to spin a uniform two-ply reverse braid that maintains structural tensile strength).
- Alchemical Crafting: Level 2 or higher (required to properly dilute, activate, and cure the extracted sap without deadening its organic binding properties).
- Transmutation Runecrafting: Level 1 or higher (needed to channel magical energy through the focus and scribe the geometric patterns into the parchment strips).
Crafting Steps:
- Extract the tree sap using the fluid collector by driving the needle beneath the inner bark of the source tree, drawing four ounces into the chamber while ensuring no air bubbles contaminate the resin.
- Clean and comb the harvested river reeds, stripping away brittle outer husks until only pliable, fibrous inner strands remain.
- Divide the prepared reed fibers into two equal bundles, attach them to the weighted spindle, and twist the plies counter-clockwise while applying steady tension to mimic the natural westward current flow.
- Brush the diluted tree sap along the lengths of the twisted cord, allowing the sticky solution to permeate the plant fibers to enhance damp-resistance and mechanical durability.
- Shape the ceramic clay and river silt into a circular medallion measuring two inches across, boring three symmetrical indentations into the face to hold the crystal catalysts.
- Press the three Tier 1 magic crystal cells into the soft ceramic recesses, sealing their borders with a thin bead of resinous sap to secure them in place.
- Use the miniature kiln or alchemical burner to fire the ceramic medallion at a steady, moderate heat until the clay hardens without overheating or fracturing the embedded crystals.
- Cut the parchment into four uniform zig-zag strips using the shears, then use the bone stylus to scribe basic transmutation formulas and threshold symbols across both sides of each marker.
- Coat the scribed parchment strips in a thin glaze of cured ironwood sap to seal the inscribed markings against rain, mud, and friction.
- Fasten the fired ceramic talisman to the center of the braided rope cord using a reinforced figure-eight knot, ensuring the crystal-bearing face projects forward.
- Secure two folded parchment strips on each side of the central knot, spacing them evenly along the cord so they hang downward freely.
- Finish the rope ends by splitting the terminal strands into decorative tassels, knotting the base of each tassel with wax-coated reed fiber to prevent fraying during field wear.
First Bound Reed and Calamity of Great Boiling Mire
In the epochs when the sky-fire Helios was yet uneven and the great mother of all things, Gaialilith, had not wholly silenced the quarrelsome spirits of steam and clay, there stood upon the outer crust of the moon a wide swamp of thick salt-pitch. It was in the country known to the stone-scratchers as Old Tasian, where the water neither flowed to the sunset nor sank to the deep bottom, but boiled without fire because the fiery guts beneath the world were too near the walking-place.
There lived then an old man-vessel who was not truly an old man-vessel, because inside his head-box were the voices of seven other skies that had fallen before the world had a name. His breathing-mouth was called Kaelo-of-the-Banks, but the name in his soul-depth was written in a speech where words were shaped like square bricks. He had no wagon, he had no gold from the commerce-shrine, and his hands were black with the sticky fat of ancient marsh-grasses.
In those rotations, the people of the banks could not sleep upon the ground. If a man laid his hip upon the earth to rest his ribs, the wet earth would become like hungry soup before the dawn-time. Many woke with their boots dissolved away; others sank down until only their hair was left waving like black pond-weed upon the boiling grease. The creeping monsters of the mud, which were neither altogether pigs nor altogether leeches, crawled out of the hot holes to bite the heels of those who could not balance upon tree branches.
Kaelo saw this and his inward memories made him very angry, for he remembered a sky where water remained water and dry paths remained dry paths. He went therefore to the great iron-bark groves where the sap ran red like bull-grease. He carried a bone tube with a sharp point, which was the first needle-plunger before the guilds had invented stamps or paper-licenses. He pierced the living belly of the iron-bark tree, and the tree groaned with a voice like a wet bell, but Kaelo caught four vessels of the red gum in his skins.
Then he went down to the edge of the great grey-lake where the wild reeds grew twelve cubits tall. These were not soft reeds for birds to sit upon, but cruel reeds with edges like glass knives that ate the blood of passing cattle. Kaelo stood in the hot slime until his feet were blistered like roasted pumpkins. For forty-nine turnings of the sky, when the planet VaporSphere hung like a fat green melon over the mountain, he pulled the reed-skins with his bare thumbs until his fingernails fell off into the muck.
He said to the reed-threads: “You are water because you grow in the bog, but you are earth because your root holds the gravel. Therefore you shall hold both together and neither shall eat the other.”
Because his grammar was bad and the spirits of the mud did not understand the ancient tongue of his past soul, the words came out backwards. The reeds hissed like angry snakes. They tried to wrap around his neck-bone to choke the breath out of his throat, but Kaelo took the red iron-sap and smeared it along the green strands while singing a noise that sounded like grinding pebbles between two flat stones. He took a heavy drop-weight made of pig-bone and turned the two plies to the left, which was against the rising of the red star and toward the falling of the salt-sea.
While he spun, a great worm with three blind heads rose up out of the bubbling sulfur-grease. This beast was of the first litter of the earth-mother, having no mind to speak with, but possessing a great belly that wished to turn all flesh into dead bile. The worm opened its front throat and vomited a torrent of scalding river-tar upon Kaelo’s apron.
Kaelo had no iron blade, nor had he five companions to make an army. He had only the six paces of wet, gummed cord that was not yet dry upon his bone-spindle. In his fright, which was also the fright of the dead man whose memories sat in his chest, he took the wet rope and tied it into a ring upon the surface of the boiling grease between his toes and the teeth of the worm.
Then the translation of the earth was made crooked.
Where the rope touched the bubbling soup, the boiling stopped as if cold lead had been dropped into milk. The mud did not dry into dust; it did not remain wet. It became like the hide of a dried bull, hard and yellow, so that when the great worm came down with its heavy snout to crush Kaelo into paste, its teeth struck the changed floor and broke like dried clay pots. The sound was like twenty shields falling on a cellar floor.
Kaelo stood upon the hardened ring and laughed through his dirty beard. He took the three small stones he had found in the crawl-spaces of dead beetles—stones that carried the little fire of the first tier—and he pressed them into the wet knot of the cord so the rope would never forget to be stubborn. He took four pieces of fish-skin that were written over with marks of the north-gate, and he tied them to the plies so that the air would know where the edge was.
The people of the salt-banks saw the yellow ring floating upon the boiling tar. They came running with their children and their goats, weeping because they had not stood upon flat ground since the last festival of the moon. More than sixty persons stood upon the space inside the cord, and the cord did not sink, nor did the boiling slime come over the border. For seven days they ate dried fish upon that dry skin while the worm wept in the deep mud outside the boundary because it could not find a way to eat them.
When the seven days were ended, the red sap began to rot from the sulfur air, and the yellow skin softened back into common grease. But Kaelo was no longer there; he had walked away toward the high hills where the stones are cool, carrying the braided belt around his middle like a priest carries a stolen bowl. The people sought to make more ropes like his, but because they did not know the words of the seven dead skies, their cords were often crooked, transmuting wine into puddle-water and good bread into dry gravel, until the guild-masters arrived with their measuring-rods to write down the numbers and sell the thread for silver.
The ancient slab from which these signs were scraped is now broken at both corners, but the lower words remain visible beneath the moss:
Moral of the Story: He who dwells upon unstable ground must not seek to dry the entire ocean with a ladle, but should instead weave a strong boundary around his own feet, for when the belly of the earth boils with confusion, safety belongs only to those who carry their own threshold tied firmly about their hips.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)
Artifact Name: Ward of the Primeval Silt (Treated Reed Talisman)
Description: A six-foot length of coarse, hand-braided marsh cordage treated with pungent resin and hung with four stiffened parchment tags. A crude ceramic medallion set with three glassy, amber-colored mineral nodes serves as the fastening buckle. When gripped by an investigator who intones an incantation, the rope grounds surrounding matter, transmuting liquid slurry and damp mire into dry, packed silt.
Game Mechanics:
- Sanity Loss to Activate: 1d3 Sanity points per activation.
- Magic Point Cost: 3 Magic Points.
- Activation Time: 1 combat round.
- Desiccating Ward: When laid in a circle or worn around the waist and activated, the cord converts non-magical standing water, mud, or muck within a 5-foot radius into firm, dry sand for 10 minutes. Within this zone, movement penalties caused by swampy terrain, slime, or loose gravel are negated.
- Kinetic Dampening: If the wearer is targeted by an environmental blast, flying debris, or an elemental fluid projectile, the investigator may spend 2 additional Magic Points as a reaction to absorb the impact; this reduces incoming physical damage from that specific attack by 1d4 points, dissipating the deflected force as a momentary cloud of dry dust.
- Purity Filter: Brackish or swampy water poured through the looped fibers of the cord is cleansed of mundane sediment, toxins, and river parasites at a rate of 1 pint every 10 minutes.
- Failure Complication: If an investigator fumbles an activation roll or an associated Occult check, the ceramic medallion fractures; the user immediately suffers 1 point of physical damage from electrostatic discharge and develops an unquenchable thirst, suffering a penalty die on all CON rolls for the next hour.
Blades in the Dark
Item Name: Amber-Weave Boundary Belt
Load: 1 Load (Utility / Arcane Gear)
Description: A heavy braided rope belt impregnated with refined alchemical pitch, holding four folded parchment slips inscribed with containment runes. A fired ceramic clasp embeds three tiny electroplasmic crystal nodules that hum faintly when exposed to canal dampness, vapor, or sewer runoff.
Game Mechanics:
- Quality: Tier I fine item.
- Activation Cost: Spend 1 Stress to activate the boundary field during a score.
- Transmutative Perimeter: When activated, muddy paths, flooded sewer floors, or standing canal puddles within close proximity (a few paces around the scoundrel) solidify into dry, chalky sediment for the duration of an obstacle. This grants improved Position or +1 Effect on rolls made to sprint, balance, or establish steady footing across treacherous liquid terrain.
- Impact Threshold: When suffering physical harm from sudden environmental shocks, bursting pipes, or scalding steam, the scoundrel may mark 1 Stress to treat the cord as specialized physical armor against that single threat, reducing the severity of the incoming Harm by one level as the energy is grounded into harmless dust.
- Water Purification: Drawing contaminated canal water through the uncoiled weave cleanses it of industrial oils, rot, and mundane impurities, filling a canteen with potable fluid over a short downtime interval.
- Volatility Complication: Rolling a 1–3 on an action roll involving the belt causes an Arcane Backlash tick on the Devil’s Bargain clock or forces an immediate Devil’s Bargain, causing the dry dust plume to blind the wearer or draw the attention of nearby Spirit Wardens.
Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition, 2024 Revision)
Item Name: Shimenawa of the Earthbound Tide
Item Type: Wondrous Item, Common (Requires Attunement)
Item Properties:
- Slot: Waist
- Weight: 2 lbs.
Description: This thick, two-ply belt is spun from resilient wetland reeds and treated with aromatic ironwood sap. Four folded paper talismans dangle from the weave, flanking a central ceramic disc set with three glowing, honey-colored crystal fragments. While worn, the belt anchors the wearer’s physical presence and grants mastery over local moisture.
Game Mechanics:
- Transmutative Ward: The item has 3 charges. While wearing the belt, you can use an action to expend 1 charge to cause mundane liquids, slippery algae, mud, or thin ice within a 5-foot-radius sphere centered on yourself to instantly transmute into firm, dry sand for 1 minute. Difficult terrain caused by surface liquids or mud within this radius is suppressed, allowing normal movement. The belt regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the ceramic medallion cracks and loses all active magical properties until repaired.
- Energy Dispersion: When you take cold, fire, or lightning damage from an area effect or ranged attack, you can use your reaction to reduce the incoming damage by 1d4. The absorbed energy harmlessly vents outward as a brief, scented puff of dry cedar mist.
- Purifying Weft: You can submerge the coiled rope into non-magical contaminated, salty, or stagnant water to draw out impurities. Over the course of 1 hour, the cord can filter up to 1 gallon of potable water into an open container.
- Steady Footing: You have advantage on saving throws and ability checks against being knocked prone or moved against your will by non-magical fluids, high winds, or shifting soil.

Description: A coarse rope belt braided from dried marsh stalks and sealed with red tree sap. It features a fired clay buckle with three amber-tinted stones and four folded parchment strips marked with old alchemical signs.
Game Mechanics:
- Silt Boundary: Once per exploration turn (10 minutes), the wearer may strike the clay buckle to turn any mundane mud, bog muck, or surface water in a 10-foot circle into dry, packed sand. This effect lasts 1 exploration turn, allowing safe foot passage over sinkholes, deep sludge, or marsh water without making a Dexterity check.
- Grounding Cushion: When the wearer takes damage from a fall into water or mud, or is struck by an elemental spray of acid, steam, or fire, the cord absorbs the brunt of the strike, reducing the damage by 1d4 points. Doing so inflicts 1 point of Quality damage on the cord.
- Water Distillation: Leaving the cord submerged in brackish swamp water inside a bucket or pot produces 1 ration of clean, drinkable water per rest period.
- Repair and Degradation: When the cord’s Quality reaches 0, the braided reeds snap and the clay disc crumbles into inert clay shards. It cannot be used again until repaired by an artisan using fresh reeds, sap, and a successful crafting check during downtime.
Fate (Fate Core / Condensed)
Item Name: Primordial Threshold Cord
Aspects:
- Inherent Aspect: Portable Sanctuary of the Sun-Dried Reed
- Invocation Concept: Master of Shifting Silt and Quenched Currents
- Compel Flaw: Conspicuous Golden Glint and Scent of Baked Clay
Skills and Stunts:
- Stunt (Desiccating Perimeter): Because you wear this resin-treated rope belt, you gain a +2 to overcome obstacles with Crafts or Physique when neutralizing hazardous aquatic, muddy, or marshy environments. Once per scene, you can immediately create the situation aspect “Firm, Dry Sand Beneath Our Feet” with one free invoke, transmuting all standing liquid within your immediate zone into solid, treadable earth.
- Stunt (Threshold Dissipation): When you are struck by a physical attack that relies on elemental fire, cold, or fluid force, you may use Lore or Athletics to defend instead of your usual skill. On a tie or success, you reduce the incoming shift value by 1 as the woven crystals absorb the blow and vent it as a puff of cedar dust.
- Utility Function: Filtering murky, contaminated, or brackish water through the coiled cord clears the water of mundane contaminants, eliminating any environmental aspects related to dehydration or tainted rations.
Numenera & Cypher System
Item Name: Cordon of the Desiccated Silt
Item Level: 3
Form: A braided belt of tough, synth-reed fibers soaked in amber resin, mounting four serrated parchment tabs and a baked nodular buckle housing three pulsating amber glassine inclusions.
Kind: Wearable Cypher / Low-Tier Artifact (Depletion: 1 in 1d20)
Game Mechanics:
- Effect: The wearer activates the buckle by pressing the central glassine inclusion. For the next ten minutes, liquid matter, unstable sludge, and standing moisture within immediate range (about 10 feet / 3 meters) are transmuted into dry, fine-grained mineral aggregate.
- Movement Modification: The area affected ceases to be rough or hindered terrain, allowing standard movement rates without requiring an Agility task to balance.
- Reactive Dispersion: If the wearer is targeted by an energy attack or projectile consisting of liquid, ice, or flame, they may spend 1 point from their Speed Pool as an asset on their defense roll. If successful, the incoming damage is reduced by 3 points, venting a cloud of dry chalky particles into the immediate space.
- Environmental Extraction: Passing up to 2 gallons of foul or alkaline liquid through the weave purifies the liquid into potable water over the course of one hour.
- Depletion Roll: Roll 1d20 after each scene in which the transmutative field is sustained. On a result of 1, the nodular buckle fractures and ceases to draw upon the ambient energy matrix until repaired with spare synth and mineral components.
Pathfinder (Second Edition / Remastered)
Item Name: Shimenawa of the Calcined Marsh
Item 1 (Uncommon, Abjuration, Earth, Primal)
Price: 15 gp
Usage: Worn (Belt)
Bulk: L
Description: Spun from marsh reeds and bonded with sticky arboreal pitch, this thick waist cord is adorned with four zigzagging vellum slips. The center is secured with a low-fired ceramic disc containing three fragments of refined magical crystal.
Game Mechanics:
- Passive Effect: The wearer gains a +1 item bonus to Reflex saves and Acrobatics checks made to avoid falling prone or slipping on mud, ice, or slick surfaces.
- Activate (Single Action) — Transmute Ground (Concentrate, Primal): Frequency once per day. The wearer speaks the activation command and taps the ceramic buckle. Any mundane surface mud, standing water up to 6 inches deep, or slippery slush in a 10-foot emanation centered on the wearer is transmuted into packed, dry sand for 1 minute. The area no longer counts as difficult terrain.
- Activate (Reaction) — Disperse Force (Manipulate, Primal): Trigger You take cold, fire, or bludgeoning damage from a fluid or energy projectile. Effect You interpose the warding energy of the hanging talismans. Reduce the triggering damage by an amount equal to 1d4 points (minimum 1). The absorbed energy disperses as a harmless vapor carrying the scent of dry straw.
- Water Purification: Drawing up to 1 gallon of stagnant, salty, or swampy water through the woven coils over a 10-minute exploration activity filters out mundane silt, rot, and mundane parasites, rendering it safe to drink.
Savage Worlds (Adventure Edition)
Item Name: Reed-Bound Threshold Belt
Item Type: Minor Arcane Device (Enchanted Gear)
Weight: 2 lbs
Cost: $250 / 15 Gold
Description: A hand-twisted rope cincture constructed from durable wetland fibers and varnished with wild tree resin. Four paper talismans hang from the sides, flanking a ceramic talisman embedded with three glowing amber stones.
Game Mechanics:
- Golden Boundary: The device carries 5 Power Points that recharge at a rate of 1 per hour. As an action, the wearer may spend 1 Power Point to activate an environmental transmutation field. A Medium Blast Template centered on the wearer immediately solidifies all mud, slime, or shallow water into firm, dry sand for 3 rounds. This eliminates Difficult Ground penalties caused by surface water and mire.
- Inertial Earthing: When targeted by an area-of-effect elemental attack (such as fire, cold, or water jets), the wearer may spend 1 Power Point as a free reaction to gain +2 Armor against that specific attack, discharging the deflected energy as a harmless spray of dry dust.
- Surefooted: While the belt is worn and visible, the wearer receives a +1 bonus to all Agility-based rolls made to resist being knocked prone or pushed back by environmental forces.
- Purity Strand: Running impure or marsh water through the fibers cleanses one canteen of potable water per 10 minutes of downtime, eliminating hazards from food or waterborne poisons.
- Device Failure: Rolling a Critical Failure while activating the belt causes the ceramic buckle to suffer a short-circuit, rendering its active powers unusable until repaired with a successful Repair check and raw materials during a period of rest.
Shadowrun (Sixth World)
Item Name: Silt-Weave Threshold Focus
Item Type: Sustaining Focus (Health / Manipulation, Rating 2)
Availability: 4R
Cost: 9,000 Nuyen
Description: A heavy, hand-braided sash woven from treated organic reeds and sealed with an aromatic herbal lacquer. Four rigid paper talismans inscribed with geomantic ward-formulae hang from the cord, flanking a kiln-fired clay buckle set with three raw telesma mineral chips. Awakened runners wear it cinched around the waist as a tactile grounding conduit to stabilize unstable physical terrain and ground out stray mana.
Game Mechanics:
- Focus Rating: 2.
- Karma to Bond: 4 Karma.
- Sludge Desiccation: When bonded and active, the bearer can cast an associated Manipulation spell through the focus as a Minor Action to desiccate physical matter. All non-magical liquids, toxic mud, or chemical runoff within Near range (5 meters) solidify into dry, packed sediment for a number of combat rounds equal to the focus rating. This negates terrain-based movement penalties and provides reliable footing across sewers, toxic sludge, and marsh water.
- Grounding Buffer: When targeted by elemental attacks (such as Fire, Cold, or Acid), the wearer may add the Focus Rating (+2) as bonus dice to their Defense or Damage Resistance test. The absorbed magical energy is safely grounded, discharging as a brief puff of dry, scorched straw.
- Elemental Filtering: Contaminated standing water passed slowly through the coiled fibers of the focus has mundane toxins, heavy metals, and radiation cleared at a rate of 1 liter per 10 minutes of downtime.
- Astral Signature Complication: If the focus is activated in a zone with an active Astral Background Count or wild mana fluctuation, any Glitch rolled on a Spellcasting test forces the clay talisman to overheat, dealing 2 boxes of unresisted Stun Damage directly to the wearer.
Starfinder (Second Edition)
Item Name: Bio-Resin Boundary Cincture
Item Level: 2 (Uncommon, Hybrid, Abjuration, Primal)
Price: 350 Credits
Usage: Worn (Belt)
Bulk: L
Capacity: 20 (Uses 1 charge per activation)
Description: Spun from genetically stabilized marsh-grass fibers and saturated with an adhesive resin, this archaic-looking sash features four synthetic parchment strips. Its centerpiece is a low-fired ceramic battery casing housing three small, honey-colored energy crystals that draw ambient energy from planetary crusts.
Game Mechanics:
- Hands: 0 (worn on belt).
- Kinetic Siltfield (Single Action, Manipulate): Spend 1 charge to generate an environmental stabilization aura. A 10-foot emanation centered on the wearer immediately causes mud, slush, shallow xenobog pools, or liquid chemical spills to calcify into firm, dry sand for 1 minute. The area loses the difficult terrain property, and characters moving across it ignore environmental slippage hazards.
- Particle Vent (Reaction): Trigger You take acid, cold, or fire damage from an environmental hazard or ranged blast. Spend 2 charges to reduce the incoming damage by 1d4 (minimum 1). The absorbed kinetic force vents into the surrounding air as a harmless, dry particulate haze.
- Hydro-Scrubber Function: Submerging the belt into non-potable swamp water or natural liquid runoff cleanses it of mundane biological contaminants, providing 1 gallon of drinking water per hour.
- System Surge: If the last charge is drained from the internal crystal node, the user must roll a DC 15 Flat check. On a failure, the ceramic matrix short-circuits, requiring 10 minutes of technical repair using engineering tools before it can accept recharges.
Traveller (Mongoose 2nd Edition)
Item Name: Geothermal Marsh-Reed Stabilizer
Tech Level: TL 4 (Primitive / Field Improvised)
Mass: 1 kg
Cost: Cr 250
Description: A survival belt manufactured from twisted high-tensile river reeds and treated with boiled tree gum to resist rot. Four parchment indicators hang across the hips, while a clay central clasp houses three natural piezoelectric mineral fragments. Designed for low-tech colonial scouts navigating untamed wetland worlds, it uses localized electrostatic and chemical reactions to dry the terrain immediately underfoot.
Game Mechanics:
- Terrain Solidification: As a Significant Action, the wearer strikes the central clay module, causing the mineral fragments to discharge a mild electrostatic field. Any saturated mud, standing water up to ankle depth, or unstable slush within 2 meters of the wearer desiccates into compacted, crusty sediment for 3D rounds. This allows the user to treat swamp terrain as open terrain and reduces the difficulty of Athletics (dexterity) checks made to avoid sinking by two levels (e.g., from Difficult to Average).
- Shock Absorber: When struck by low-velocity fragmentation, liquid splash, or thermal flare hazards, the belt disperses the energy, granting Armor +1 against that specific hit while emitting a sharp scent of dry grass and ozone.
- Field Water Condenser: Running dirty water through the twisted reeds uses basic capillary action and resin absorption to clear suspended solids and microbes, filtering 1 liter of drinkable water every 30 minutes.
- Durability Limit: Each time the electrostatic desiccation is triggered, the player must roll 2D. On a roll of 2, the primitive clay housing cracks under thermal stress, rendering the device inert until repaired using a successful Mechanic check (1D hours, Average 8+).
Warhammer (Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th Edition)
Item Name: Girdle of the Dried Fen
Item Type: Minor Talisman / Enchanted Ward
Carried: Waist
Encumbrance: 0
Availability: Scarce
Description: Braided from coarse river reeds plucked from Morr’s fens and coated in boiled pine pitch, this waist cord is decorated with four folded parchment strips bearing painted ward-glyphs of the Lore of Beasts and Lore of Life. A fired clay buckle contains three amber stone fragments that hum faintly when near stagnant bogwater.
Game Mechanics:
- Mud-Walker’s Boon: The wearer is unaffected by the penalties of Difficult Terrain caused by deep mud, marsh water, slime, or river banks. Once per day, the wearer may channel the talisman to turn a 2-yard radius around them into dry, firm soil for 1d10 rounds, allowing companions to cross hazardous bogs without rolling Athletics Tests.
- Warding Dissipation: When targeted by a spell or missile attack that causes damage via water, steam, or fire, the wearer may make an immediate Challenging (+0) Willpower Test as a Free Reaction. If successful, the incoming Damage is reduced by +1 SL (minimum 1 point reduced), releasing a cloud of dry, herbal-scented smoke.
- Fen-Water Cleansing: Immersing the coiled girdle into brackish swamp water or fenland pools pulls out rot and impurities, providing 1 day’s clean drinking rations per hour of resting immersion.
- Warpstone Hazard: If the talisman is worn in an area heavily corrupted by Chaos or Dhar, any Fumble on a test related to movement or defense causes the amber stones to crack, immediately giving the wearer 1 Corruption Point and causing the reeds to rot to dust.
