Shamanic 418 of the Oral Chroniclers Dombyra

Lore:

  • Preserved across generations among nomadic teachers, clan elders, and pedagogical baksy of the steppe, this two-stringed lute acts as a spiritual reservoir for ancestral history, linguistic grammar, oral epics, and traditional folklore.
  • In nomadic cultures where libraries are carried in the mind rather than housed in stone vaults, the Dombyra is an instructional implement used to imprint complex genealogies, astronomical calendars, and practical survival sciences directly into the memories of young apprentices through resonance.
  • Carved from seasoned mountain pine and wild juniper, the instrument channels the spirits of departed masters and chroniclers (Aruakhs of the Word), allowing their accumulated wisdom to guide the novice’s fingers, articulate difficult phonetic principles, and reveal historical truths embedded in the surrounding landscape.
  • Embedded with a coin-sized Tier 1 lapis lazuli crystal at the bridge, the instrument acts as a focal bridge between abstract knowledge and intuitive understanding, illustrating the old proverb that a song well-strung teaches the grandson what the grandfather forgot to speak.

Description:

  • The instrument is a thirty-eight-inch, pear-shaped two-stringed fretted lute carved from a single hollowed block of dark-stained mountain pine, featuring a soundboard of pale, ring-dense spruce.
  • Its slender neck is wrapped with sixteen moveable frets made of braided silk thread and goat sinew, precisely calibrated to harmonic tones that align with ancestral memory rites.
  • Anchored directly beneath the bone bridge is an uncut, coin-sized Tier 1 lapis lazuli crystal that emits a deep azure phosphorescence whenever an oral chronicle, historical tale, or academic lecture is performed.
  • Along the instrument’s headstock, seven miniature tuning-quills carved from sheep-bone are tied with braided azure horsehair cords and tiny inscribed talismans that flutter in rhythm with the plucked strings.
  • The two gut strings are wound with silver thread, producing an exceptionally warm, resonant acoustic tone that carries clearly across open winds, lecture pavilions, and crowded encampments without requiring vocal shouting.

Multiple Passives Magic:

  • Ancestral Lexicon Divination: While holding or playing the instrument, the avatar passively understands and can speak rudimentary dialects, archaic phrases, and regional languages spoken within 30 feet, provided those languages have been spoken on the land within the past three generations.
  • Mnemonist’s Recall: Any student, ally, or listener who sits within 15 feet while the avatar strums an instructional ballad gains photographic memory of the information conveyed for the next 24 hours, recalling names, maps, astronomical coordinates, and historical lineages without error.
  • Scholastic Resonance: The avatar gains advantage on all checks made to research, analyze historical relics, recall ancient history, or instruct non-hostile creatures in basic survival and artisan skills.

Multiple Activable Magics:

  • Echoing Saga Disruption: As an action, the avatar plucks both silver-wound strings in a sharp, discordant dual-octave snap directed at a creature within 30 feet. A concussive burst of resonant acoustic sound waves rushes forward, rattling the mind. The target must succeed on a DC 11 saving throw or take 1d6 thunder damage, become stunned until the start of its next turn as overwhelming ancestral memories flood its senses, and suffer a -2 penalty to its mental checks for 1 minute.
  • Chronicler’s Mnemonic Imprint: As an action requiring 1 minute of uninterrupted melodic recitation, the avatar imparts a single complex procedural skill (such as herbal identification, knot-tying, or reading a specific script) to up to three willing allies. For the next 8 hours, the recipients gain proficiency in that specific skill or tool check.
  • Harmonic Aegis of the Scribes: As a reaction when the avatar or an adjacent ally is targeted by an attack or spell within 10 feet, the wielder strikes a full, resonant chord across the frets. An azure dome of vibrating acoustic strings and ancestral whispers flashes into being, granting a +2 bonus to Armor Check against the triggering attack. If the attack misses, the acoustic barrier discharges, dealing 1d4 thunder damage to the attacker and pushing them 5 feet backward.

Tactical Pedagogy and Environmental Roleplay of the Oral Chronicler’s Dombyra

  • Nomadic Steppe Yurts, Open Grazing Valleys, and Wind-Scoured Campfires:
    • Environmental Context: Broad open-air plateaus, sprawling seasonal encampments of felt tents, dry riverbed terraces, and perimeter campfires where howling winds easily swallow spoken commands and raiders strike out of the dark.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • While gathered around an evening campfire under biting winds, the avatar uses Mnemonist’s Recall to teach junior scouts complex star alignments and seasonal watering-hole maps; the two strings cut cleanly through the howling gale, fixing the lessons into the apprentices’ memories without shouting.
      • When mounted horse-archers or wild steppe predators rush the outer tents under cover of darkness, the avatar strikes a sweeping chord across the frets to raise the Harmonic Aegis of the Scribes, creating a humming azure dome of ancestral whispers that deflects incoming arrow volleys and pushes lunging wolves backward.
      • In contentious inter-clan territorial parleys, Ancestral Lexicon Divination allows the avatar to translate archaic border oaths and ancient dialect nuances, preventing misunderstandings from turning into bloody tribal skirmishes.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • As mounted raiders charge down a river terrace toward noncombatants, the avatar snaps the silver-wound gut strings in a sharp, discordant interval to trigger Echoing Saga Disruption. A sonic blast of ancestral battle chants crashes into the lead riders, shocking their senses, causing mounts to rear in confusion, and giving clan defenders the upper hand.
      • If an aggressive skirmisher closes within striking distance, the avatar wields the thirty-eight-inch pine body with both hands like a club, deflecting incoming blade strikes and delivering a bludgeoning blow across the collarbone with the hollow, resonant soundbox.
  • Stone Scriptoriums, University Lecture Halls, and Monastic Archives:
    • Environmental Context: Cavernous masonry libraries, echoing vaulted cloisters, high-ceilinged lecture amphitheaters, and narrow book-aisles where loud brawling risks destroying irreplaceable scrolls and historic parchment.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • During intense academic debates or theological inquiries, Scholastic Resonance allows the avatar to instantly cite forgotten precedents and cross-reference ancient commentaries, verbally dismantling rival sophists before arguments escalate to violence.
      • When an armed gang or fanatic cult infiltrates the scriptorium to burn rare texts, the avatar interposes the Harmonic Aegis of the Scribes to protect fragile lecterns and cowering apprentices. The acoustic dome absorbs thrown incendiary flasks and bludgeoning swings while blasting intruders five feet backward onto the flagstones.
      • If city guards or foreign inquisitors speak in obscure court ciphers or dead bureaucratic Latin, Ancestral Lexicon Divination unravels their coded intent instantly, allowing the party to evade legal traps and wrongful arrests.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Faced with hostile infiltrators in narrow, parchment-lined archives where weapons like blades or torches could ruin priceless scrolls, the avatar triggers Echoing Saga Disruption. The concentrated thunder wave overloads the ears of invaders, stunning them on the spot without sparking flame or causing collateral structural damage.
      • In tight reading carrels, the avatar uses the instrument’s long neck to parry thrusting daggers and leverages the hardwood frame to sweep the feet from under an attacker, pinning them against the slate floor.
  • Ancient Ruined Necropolises, Subterranean Tombs, and Barrow-Mounds:
    • Environmental Context: Crumbling stone vaults, dust-choked catacombs, subterranean burial halls, and forgotten royal tombs where ancient spirits linger and ancestral traps await the uninitiated.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • While advancing through darkened funerary corridors, Ancestral Lexicon Divination lets the avatar read eroded funerary glyphs, warning ciphers, and dead dialect inscriptions carved into tomb lintels, warning the party of pressure-plate deadfalls and poisoned darts.
      • When wraiths or restless ancestral spirits rise from stone sarcophagi, the avatar uses Chronicler’s Mnemonic Imprint to teach companions the proper ritual counter-chants, harmonizing with the spirits and warding off necrotic curses.
      • If an undead horror lunges from a crypt alcove, the avatar triggers the Harmonic Aegis of the Scribes, using the bright azure harmonic field to repel supernatural strikes while discharging radiant thunder damage that shunts the abomination back into its sepulcher.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • Facing crypt-guardians or tomb desecrators, the avatar strikes a powerful chord that resonates through the subterranean stone. Echoing Saga Disruption floods the enemy’s mind with the overwhelming weight of ancient burial laments, stunning the target and shattering their mental focus.
      • When cornered in close quarters, the avatar delivers two-handed bludgeoning strikes with the rounded pine body, using the reinforced bone bridge and headstock to batter brittle skeletons and break apart animated constructs.
  • Subterranean Smuggler Alleys, Crowded Taverns, and Market Thoroughfares:
    • Environmental Context: Narrow cobblestone lanes, smoke-filled dockside dive bars, noisy bazaar alleys, and cramped tenements where rowdy brawlers, debt enforcers, and thieves lurk among the populace.
    • Defensive Roleplay:
      • In dense urban taverns where foreign crews and thieves mingle, Ancestral Lexicon Divination allows the avatar to pick out hidden underworld cant and pickpocket plans spoken across the room.
      • When a brawl erupts and bottles, stools, or daggers fly across the taproom, the avatar raises the Harmonic Aegis of the Scribes. The acoustic barrier deflects improvised missiles and pushes drunk ruffians back onto benches, keeping companions safe.
    • Offensive Roleplay:
      • To neutralize an aggressive loan shark or enforcer without alerting city watchmen through lethal bloodshed, the avatar unleashes Echoing Saga Disruption. The concussive acoustic shock drops the instigator to their knees, disoriented by ringing ears and a barrage of forgotten historical memories.
      • Moving fluidly through narrow alleys, the avatar uses the dombyra’s neck to hook an escaping thief’s collar or sweeps the instrument’s hollow body into an attacker’s midsection to subdue them non-lethally.

    • Ancestral Lexicon Divination effortlessly bridges regional language barriers, archaic dialects, dead clan idioms, and ancient ruin inscriptions up to three generations old.
  • Flawless Educational Retention:
    • Mnemonist’s Recall ensures allies and students retain complex maps, tactical procedures, genealogies, and survival instructions with photographic precision for 24 hours.
  • Versatile Non-Lethal Defense:
    • Echoing Saga Disruption stuns dangerous aggressors and penalizes mental checks at a safe 30-foot range with thunder damage, neutralizing threats without spilling blood.
  • Instantaneous Skill Sharing:
    • Chronicler’s Mnemonic Imprint temporarily grants full tool or skill proficiencies to up to three allies for 8 hours, radically improving party versatility during expeditions.
  • Reactive Melee Repulsion:
    • The Harmonic Aegis of the Scribes grants a +2 Armor Check boost while punishing missing attackers with 1d4 thunder damage and a 5-foot knockback.

Negatives

  • Conspicuous Auditory Signature:
    • The resonant music, luminous azure rings, and layered ancestral whispering make absolute stealth, visual concealment, or silent infiltration impossible while active.
  • Vulnerable Instrument Structure:
    • Though the seasoned pine body is reinforced with shamanic resilience, the thin spruce soundboard and silver-wound strings remain far more vulnerable to crushing physical trauma or open flame than metallic weapons.
  • Cognitive Sensory Overload:
    • Extensive exposure to the ancestral whispering chorus in high-stress combat can cause the user mild auditory distraction or ringing in the ears after the performance ends.
  • Ineffective in Total Vacuum or Magical Silence:
    • The focus requires an acoustic medium to propagate its mnemonic waves, concussive disruption, and defensive wards; an area subjected to magical silence or an airless vacuum completely suppresses its active abilities.

Recipe: The Steppe Chronicler’s Resonant Dombyra

Materials Needed

  • Core Resonator & Neck:
    • One solid, seasoned billet of slow-grown mountain pine, forty inches in length and six inches in width, dried over three winters to eliminate internal tension and moisture.
  • Soundboard:
    • Two bookmatched halves of quarter-sawn, fine-grained alpine spruce, each 3 mm thick, selected for dense acoustic ring structure.
  • Magical Catalyst:
    • One coin-sized, coin-weighted Tier 1 lapis lazuli crystal of deep azure saturation with fine flecks of golden pyrite, harvested from a high-altitude mountain vein.
  • Sacrificial Component:
    • One antique manuscript, chronicle codex, or master tutor’s syllabus that has recorded or taught clan history, grammar, or law across at least three generations. This manuscript is ritually burned to ash to transfer its pedagogical spirit-record into the instrument.
  • Strings, Frets, & Bridge Hardware:
    • Two length-matched strands of purified mountain goat gut, wound with fine spun-silver wire (thirty-six inches long each).
    • Sixteen lengths of braided wild silk thread and mountain goat sinew for tying moveable harmonic frets.
    • One carved sheep-astragalus bone blank for the string bridge.
    • One dense juniper wood blank for the headstock nut.
    • Seven miniature bone tuning-quills, drilled and polished.
    • Braided azure horsehair cords and small parchment talismans inscribed with lineage runes.
  • Binding & Finishing Agents:
    • Rendered fish-swim-bladder glue (isinglass) for acoustic-transparent joinery.
    • Two fluid drams of juniper resin varnish blended with refined walnut oil.

Tools Required

  • Traditional luthier’s gouges, curved spoon-planes, and cabinet scrapers for hollowing the pine resonator body.
  • Fine pull-saw (dozuki style) for joining the soundboard and shaping the neck taper.
  • Hand-cranked luthier’s drill and tapered reamers for peg-holes and bridge-anchor pins.
  • Small ceramic brazier for calcining the sacrificial manuscript.
  • Fret-spacing calibration rule and brass dividers.
  • Clamping straps, wooden cam clamps, and hot hide-glue warming pot.

Skill Requirements

  • Instrument Crafting & Lutherie: Level 3 or higher. Necessary to hollow the soundbox to uniform 3 mm wall thickness and seat the soundboard without acoustic dead spots.
  • Pedagogical Shamanic Rites (Baksy of the Word): Level 1 or higher. Essential to conduct the ancestral vigil of the Aruakhs, infuse the manuscript ash into the lapis bridge seat, and tune the gut strings to ancestral harmonic intervals.
  • Calligraphy & Mnemonic Binding: Level 2 or higher. Required to transcribe the microscopic genealogical and linguistic talismans suspended from the headstock.

Crafting Steps

  • Step 1: Carving the Monolithic Body and Neck:
    • Take the seasoned mountain pine billet and trace the slender, pear-shaped body and elongated neck.
    • Using curved gouges and spoon-planes, hollow out the resonant bowl from the front face, maintaining an even rim thickness of 3 mm along the walls and slightly greater thickness at the heel block.
    • Profile the neck to a smooth, rounded semi-oval cross-section, terminating in a slotted headstock angled backward at twelve degrees.
    • Sand the interior cavity smooth with river-rush stems to ensure clean acoustic reflection.
  • Step 2: Preparing and Calcining the Sacrificial Manuscript:
    • Place the ancestral chronicle or instructional syllabus into the ceramic brazier.
    • Kindle the fire with dry juniper splints while reciting the baksy invocation of the Unbroken Voice, maintaining an even burn until the leaves are reduced to soft, silver-gray ash.
    • Blend half of the fine manuscript ash into the warm liquid isinglass glue; reserve the remaining ash to bed the lapis crystal.
  • Step 3: Soundboard Fitting and Harmonic Bracing:
    • Join the two bookmatched halves of spruce using the ash-infused isinglass glue.
    • Cut a single small teardrop soundhole along the lower bout and carve shallow radial tone-bars on the underside of the soundboard.
    • Clamp the soundboard to the hollowed pine body using wooden cam clamps and let cure under steady tension for twenty-four hours.
    • Scrape the exterior joints flush and apply a thin priming coat of walnut oil.
  • Step 4: Mounting the Lapis Catalyst and Bridge:
    • Shape the sheep-bone bridge blank to accommodate the two strings at traditional spacing.
    • Directly below the soundboard’s bridge footing, hollow a precise circular recess sized to seat the Tier 1 lapis lazuli crystal.
    • Dust the socket with the remaining manuscript ash, set the lapis stone, and seal the rim with purified juniper resin so the stone makes direct mechanical contact with the soundboard wood.
    • Mount the juniper nut at the top of the neck and ream seven matching holes in the headstock to accept the bone tuning-quills.
  • Step 5: Tying Frets and Stringing:
    • Using the fret-spacing rule, wrap and tie the sixteen silk-and-sinew frets securely around the neck, positioning them according to traditional steppe quarter-tone intervals.
    • Secure the silver-wound gut strings to the tail-block peg, run them over the bone bridge directly above the lapis crystal, and wind them onto the primary tuning-quills.
    • Attach the azure horsehair cords and miniature inscribed parchment talismans to the auxiliary bone quills on the headstock.
  • Step 6: Awakening Vigil and Final Tuning:
    • Hand-rub three coats of the juniper resin and walnut oil varnish across the instrument, polishing it with raw wool.
    • Hold the instrument over smoldering juniper incense through the night while plucking the open strings in fifths and reciting the names of clan ancestors.
    • Once the lapis stone flares with a steady, deep azure glow and the whispers of the chroniclers are audible in the instrument’s decay, the dombyra is fully attuned and ready for performance.

Two Twisted Gut-Cords, Great Forgetting of Seven River-Clans, and Singer Who Spoke with Mouth of Mound

In that day when the great salt-lake had still the shape of an ox-kidney and the red sky was not yet divided from the bitter water by the iron poles of heaven, the people of the wide reeds walked like sheep whose ears have been pierced by the beetle of silence. They had no clay boards with scratching-marks upon them, nor did they carry the names of their grandmothers inside their stomachs. When the white grass grew tall, they said: “Behold, the grass is white.” When the black frost broke the bones of their colts, they sat down in the mud and said: “Behold, the ice has bitten our meat.” And when an old mother fell down among the dried scrub, the young men laid two flat river-stones upon her face and did not know whether she had been the mother of forty milk-pots or only a stray dog that had barked at the camp-fire in the third moon.

Now there ruled across the muddy reaches of the Nine Canals a stone-man whose title upon the broken baked pots is written as Lugal-of-the-Heavy-Tongue, but whom the deaf copper-beaters of the marshes named He-Who-Burneth-the-Bones-of-Yesterday. He sat upon a high stool made of dead sheep-teeth, wearing a shirt of beaten lead that smelled of stagnant river-slime. Lugal was swollen with fear like an old horse that hath eaten bitter night-sprouts, for he said unto his seventy club-bearers: “If the sheep-drovers remember whose dirt-fields their fathers ploughed, they will spit upon my lead shirt and break the teeth of my stool. Therefore, let the water of the seven ditch-gates be mixed with the black root of forgetting. Whosoever shall speak the name of an ancestor dead forty winters, or whosoever shall teach a boy to read the stars of the north-basket, let his tongue be pulled out through his neck with hot iron sheep-shears!”

And so the seven river-clans grew stupid like river-slugs. When a child was born, they gave him no name, but called him “One-Who-Eats-Curd” or “One-Who-Carries-Dung.” If a heifer died of the lung-rot, no drover remembered the blue-leaf medicine of the high mountains, and the herds decayed into black water until the whole reed-plain stank like an unskinned camel.

Then upon the rim of the high gravel-terrace, where the mountain pine groweth small and twisted like an old crone’s thumb, there dwelt an ancient teacher of the word whose mark upon the scorched tiles was Asan-the-Hollow-Ribbed. He had neither bronze kettle nor five measures of rye, but carried across his back a long, pear-shaped box of mountain timber, thirty-and-eight inches from tail to head, strung with two thick guts taken from the belly of a sacred mountain goat and tied with sixteen knots of yellow silk and dry sinew. Upon its little bone bridge was set a round blue glass, dark as the winter-night sky when the frost is sharp, and from its ears hung seven bone pegs with horse-hair tails that fluttered like wild ducks when the mountain wind blew down through the gorges.

“Why sit ye in the ditch-muck, scratching your bellies like winter-lice?” said Asan to the herd-boys who watered their colts at the brackish seep. “Ye have forgotten the names of the five brothers who dug the first well, and ye know not why the winter-star riseth behind the shoulder of the White Bull.”

The boys looked upon him with white, watery eyes, having no speech in their mouths save the low grunts of herd-beasts: “What is a brother? What is a well? The great lead-shirted Lugal hath given us two bowls of millet and an iron hoe. We know only the hoe and the grease of the pot.”

Then Asan wept three bitter tears into the soundhole of his pine box. He sat down upon a dry sheep-bone and drew his crooked thumb across the two silver-wound gut cords—tung, ring, tang!

Behold, the earth under the mud-tents did not shake with thunder, but a great warmth, like the breath of four hundred grandmothers baking hearth-bread, blew through the wool flaps of the yurts! The round blue glass beneath the bridge flared with an azure fire, bright like the noon-sun seen through a block of river-ice. Out from the pine belly came not the sound of iron clashing, but a great whispering of four thousand mouths—the Aruakhs, the departed fathers, the singers of the dead centuries who had slept in the salt-mounds with their bronze knives upon their breasts!

The two gut-cords spoke: they told how the great river had once been sweet and full of fat silver carp; they sang the thirty-nine names of the clan-mothers who had woven the first felt rugs from the fleece of wild ewes; they articulated the sixteen stars that teach the caravan when to drive the mares away from the salt-poison marshes.

The herd-boys fell upon their faces in the dirt. Their eyes, which had been dull like unboiled suet, cleared like running brook-springs! The words entered their ears and struck deep into the marrow of their collarbones: “We are not dung-carriers! We are the seed of Altai-the-Tall, who slew the marsh-serpent with an ash-tree lance! We are the children of the seven clean waters!”

The song carried through the reeds like the smoke of burning dry juniper. It went into the huts of the weavers; it entered the pens of the shearers; it flew through the open windows of the grain-millers. The people dropped their wooden hoes; they rose up from the clay benches; they began to chant the genealogies of their grandfathers, matching word to word without the loss of a single syllable, as though the verses had been carved with fire upon the inside of their skulls!

When news of this reached the mud-fortress of Lugal-of-the-Heavy-Tongue, his lead shirt shook with rage like an iron pan over a blast-furnace. “Bring forth the sixty club-bearers with the bronze spikes!” he howled into his sheep-tooth stool. “Crack the pine box across the old beggar’s pate, and let his gut-cords be thrown to the wild swine of the mud-dikes!”

The sixty club-bearers marched out, their bronze helmets clanking like broken kettles. They came upon Asan sitting beside the dried well-curb, surrounded by four hundred apprentices who sat cross-legged, repeating the ancient grammar of the steppe with one single, beautiful voice.

The captain of the club-bearers raised his iron-spiked mace to split the old man’s skull. Asan did not flinch, nor did he drop the pine neck. With his two hands he swept a full, ringing chord across the sixteen silk frets—khrr-aaang!

A great dome of azure light, woven of vibrating musical cords and the white, shining faces of six generations of dead scribes, burst outward from the lapis stone! The iron mace struck the humming blue light, and behold, the bronze head of the weapon shattered into eighty pieces of red gravel, and the captain was thrown forty paces backward into the ditch-mud, his ears bleeding from the terrible, righteous weight of the ancestors’ song!

Then Asan stood upon his feet. He plucked both gut strings together in a sharp, discordant interval—a terrible, snapping octave like the cracking of dry winter timber!

A concussive blast of ancient words, legal oaths, and forgotten battle-cries rushed from the two strings like an avalanche of blue river-stones! The sixty club-bearers dropped their shields; they fell upon their knees, clutching their iron helmets, for their heads were suddenly filled with the names and the sins of their own grandfathers! They saw how their ancestors had been betrayed by the house of Lugal; they saw how their sisters had been sold for three baskets of moldy peas; and they wept with loud, animal wailing, unable to lift their hands or remember how to strike an honest man.

Then Asan walked through the gate of the mud-fortress, followed by the four hundred apprentices, singing the chronicle of the liberation. Lugal-of-the-Heavy-Tongue tried to scream from his sheep-tooth throne, but when he opened his mouth, the ancient blue light fell upon his tongue. Because his heart had held only lies and the robbery of memory, the weight of six centuries of truth fell upon his brain like a mill-wheel. His ears could not bear the song; his lead shirt melted from his shoulders like mutton fat on an iron griddle, and he fell down into the dust behind his stool, babbling like a three-day-old infant who hath not yet learned to say “mother” or “water.”

The people did not take up swords to butcher him, for Asan said: “He who slayeth an ignorant man only maketh a grave of silence; let him live without his stolen stool, so that he may listen every day to the boys reciting the names of the seven river-clans which he sought to drown in the ditch-water.”

Asan-the-Hollow-Ribbed laid the pine dombyra upon the teaching-mat of the high communal yurt. He did not build a stone house, nor did he take forty horses for his wisdom, but sat among the young children, plucking the two strings at sunrise so that the law, the herbs, and the lineages of the earth would never again be stolen by a man with an iron club.

Moral: The heavy sword may shatter the mud-tablet of the scribe, and the fear of kings may silence the tongue of the marketplace for forty seasons; but the memory of the ancestors dieth not while two cords are strung upon dry pine; for a song well-taught to the young is a fortress of iron which no forgetfulness can batter down, nor any tyrant’s fire consume.

  • Lore:
    • Carved from mountain pine groves on feudal shrine worlds and strung with gut and spun silver, this two-stringed lute holds a deep-blue lapis lazuli crystal nestled under its bone bridge. Kept by elder clan cantors and tribal historiographers, the instrument is struck to teach holy lineages, preserve oral law without Imperial ink, and unleash shattering sonic reprimands against heretics and beast-raiders.
  • Rules and Combat Mechanics:
    • Ancestral Lexicon & Pedagogical Memory (Passive):
      • The bearer adds +1 bonus die to Scholar (Int) and Fellowship (Fel) tests when interpreting local feral dialects, unearthing archaic clan lore, or delivering historical lectures. Squad members who listen to an instructional recitation gain +1 bonus die on Awareness (Int) or Survival (Wil) tests for 24 hours.
    • Echoing Saga Disruption:
      • As a combat action, the wielder snaps both silver-wound strings in a sharp, discordant interval against a foe within 10 meters.
      • Make a Willpower or Fellowship Test against the target’s Defense.
      • On a hit, the target suffers 4 + 1ED Shock damage, gains the Staggered condition until the start of your next turn, and suffers a +1 Difficulty penalty to all Intellect and Willpower tests for 1 minute.
    • Chronicler’s Mnemonic Imprint:
      • Once per session, by spending a full narrative scene reciting an educational ballad, the bearer imparts tactical knowledge to up to three allies. Each chosen ally gains +1 bonus die on tests with a single designated non-combat skill (such as Survival, Tech, or Medicae) for the next 8 hours.
    • Harmonic Aegis of the Scribes:
      • As an interrupt action when the wielder or an ally within 3 meters is targeted by a melee attack, the bearer strikes an open chord.
      • The target gains +2 Resilience against the triggering attack. If the attack fails to hit, the acoustic backlash inflicts 1d3 Mortal Wounds on the attacker and shunts them 2 meters backward.
