For forty days the divers tore their fingers on the sharp river-clams. They dragged heavy iron nets through the reeds. They churned the water until it smelled like a dead dog. They threw stones at the water-snakes; they cut down the wild lilies with sickles so they could drag the bottom with curved hooks.
