Lore
- In the rugged highlands and rain-battered river valleys of Saṃsāra, dampness is not merely a physical inconvenience—it is a spiritual vector through which rot, blights, and malevolent water-ghouls (tsqaldidoba spirits and ditch-crawlers) seep into grain stores, fleece-bundles, and human lungs.
- Satsnakheli witchcraft has long elevated the drying hearth and the suspended wicker curing-frame (chiri racks and grape-drying lofts) into sacred thresholds of protection, transforming raw harvest into preserved sustenance and warding textiles against mildew curses.
- Lineage number 418 identifies an ancient pastoral design of portable drying staffs and curing frames traditionally carried by highland wool-washers, fruit-preservers, and traveling hedgewitches.
- Consecrated over sweet smoke of dried vine-cuttings and wild mountain fig leaves, these implements draw out foul humors, stagnant moisture, and clinging bog-mists, turning soggy clothing, wet bowstrings, and soaked firewood instantly dry and ready for use.
- Today, marsh-striders, mountain couriers, and pragmatic frontier avatars rely on these staff-frames to stave off trench rot, cross swollen mountain streams without dampening rations, and cast drying solar wards that paralyse creeping mud-things in their tracks.
Description
- The item is a four-and-a-half-foot walking staff and collapsible drying rack fashioned from dense, fire-hardened Caucasian hazelwood (thkhili), carved along its upper third with interlaced sun-spirals (Borjgali) and stylized hanging fig motifs.
- The upper shaft is fitted with three folding cross-spokes of polished ash that lock into place with cast bronze cotter pins, forming a rigid three-tiered drying armature capable of suspending cloaks, rations, or herb bundles.
- Mounted at the crown within a four-prong bronze sun-burst collar is a Tier 1 magic crystal: a smooth, oval cabochon of fiery orange-red carnelian that hums with dry, radiant thermal energy whenever moisture touches the wood.
- Suspended beneath the crown assembly are three miniature bronze bells cast in the shape of dried poppy capsules, each carrying a tiny iron bead that chimes with a dry, rustling rattle when warm air circulates.
- The lower end of the hazelwood staff terminates in a heavy bronze ferrule shod with an iron spade-point, allowing the user to drive the staff securely into muddy soil or rocky scree to serve as a freestanding drying kiln.
- The entire piece permanently gives off the warm, comforting fragrance of sun-baked linen, toasted walnuts, dried sweet persimmons, and dry cedar woodsmoke.

- Suggested Market Value: 25 silver coins (2 gold coins and 5 silver coins) in highland wool-mills, persimmon-drying cooperatives, and mountain way-stations; rising to 35 to 45 silver coins in flooded delta settlements, besieged salt-marsh fortresses, and damp mining camps.
Passive Magic
- Desiccating Aura of the Hearth:
- Non-living organic materials, textiles, parchment, leather goods, and combustible supplies carried by the wielder or draped across the rack within a 5-foot radius remain completely impervious to rain, river spray, humidity, and damp rot; wet clothing dries within 1 minute of being hung upon the spokes, and bowstrings or parchment never warp from moisture.
- Trench-Rot Immunity:
- While carrying or leaning upon the staff, the wielder and their footwear/boots are protected against trench foot, fungal rot, waterlogged blisters, and parasitic river worms; the bearer gains advantage on saving throws and checks made to resist environmental hypothermia or diseases transmitted through foul, stagnant water.
- Kindler’s Touch:
- Any damp firewood, wet moss, or soaked tinder touched by the iron shoe or ash crossbars of the staff has all moisture evaporated instantly, allowing wet fuel to catch fire without producing suffocating smoke or fizzling out.
Activable Magic
- Parching Sun-Breeze:
- Action Cost: One standard action.
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: The wielder plants the staff base into the ground, raps the haft twice, and speaks the Satsnakheli invocation of the dry mountain wind (Chiri-Kari).
- Effect: A blast of supernaturally dry, warm wind erupts from the carnelian in a 15-foot cone. Standing puddles, mud, and river soak in the area dry into cracked, solid earth for 1 minute. Living creatures composed of water, slime, or mud caught within take 2d6 desiccating force damage (DC 12 Constitution or Fortitude save for half); hostile targets wearing soaked garments must make a DC 12 Strength save or have their sodden cloaks suddenly stiffen, reducing their movement speed by 10 feet for 1 round.
- Cooldown: Usable three times per in-game day.
- Moisture-Drawing Leech:
- Action Cost: One standard action.
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: The user points the carnelian tip at a wet object, flooded chest, or sodden creature within 10 feet and draws a sharp breath inward.
- Effect: Up to 10 gallons of nonmagical liquid is instantly sucked out of the target and absorbed into the bronze collar, venting harmlessly away as a cloud of warm steam. When used against a water-logged or drenched target, it instantly neutralizes wet-based electrical vulnerability or water-curse conditions. When used against an amphibious or water-elemental creature, the target takes 1d8 desiccating damage and must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution save or be stunned until the end of its next turn.
- Cooldown: Usable three times per in-game day.
- Solar Curing-Dome of the Persimmon:
- Action Cost: One standard action.
- Verbal / Casting Requirement: The wielder drives the iron spade-point firmly into the earth and unfolds all three ash rack-spokes while reciting the blessing of the dry harvest.
- Effect: A 10-foot-radius invisible dome of dry, warm air emanates from the carnelian for 8 hours (or until the staff is pulled up). Inside the dome, rain, hail, and high humidity cannot penetrate; the ambient temperature remains a dry, comfortable 21°C (70°F). Allies resting within the dome wake fully rested, their gear perfectly dry, and clear one level of exhaustion or fatigue caused by exposure to wet or freezing weather.
- Cooldown: Usable once per in-game day.

Tactical Roleplay of the Hearth-Drying Rack-Staff Across the Environments of Saṃsāra
- Drenched Peat Bogs, Mangrove Swamps, and Silt Deltas:
- Environmental Context: Knee-deep stagnant mud, perpetual drizzle, rotting vegetation, waterborne parasites, and ambushes from submerged mud-lurkers or serpent-ghouls.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Leaning on the hazelwood haft while traversing black mire, Trench-Rot Immunity keeps boots, feet, and leggings bone-dry, completely preventing foot blisters, leech infestation, and crippling mud rot during multi-day treks.
- When night falls over a flooded fen with no dry ground in sight, the avatar plants the iron spade-point into a peat mound and unfolds the ash spokes to trigger Solar Curing-Dome of the Persimmon. The 10-foot ward drives back damp marsh-chills, creates a dry micro-climate, and dries soaked cloaks, blankets, and waterlogged rations overhead.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Ambushed by predatory bog-crawlers or mud-golems rising from the silt, the wielder unleashes Parching Sun-Breeze. The blast of searing, dry wind robs the creatures of moisture, cracking their muddy carapaces, solidifying the quagmire beneath their claws into dry crust, and dealing desiccating damage.
- When an aquatic stalker attempts to drag a companion underwater, the avatar targets the beast with Moisture-Drawing Leech, violently siphoning water from its tissues into steam to stun the predator and force it to release its hold.
- High Alpine Glaciers, Freezing Sleet Passes, and Mountain Caverns:
- Environmental Context: Sub-zero winds, driving sleet, ice-sheathed ledges, hypothermia hazards, and damp cave walls dripping with freezing runoff.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- While enduring a sudden mountain blizzard, Desiccating Aura of the Hearth ensures that outer wool garments, glove linings, and bowstrings shed frozen sleet instantly rather than soaking through, preventing catastrophic hypothermia and keeping archers’ equipment combat-ready.
- When sheltering inside a damp, freezing limestone cleft, Kindler’s Touch allows the party to instantly evaporate moisture from wet mountain lichens, frost-covered deadwood, and damp kindling, enabling a crackling fire where natural ignition would be impossible.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Confronting mountain brigands whose heavy wool coats and furs are drenched with melting sleet, the wielder invokes Parching Sun-Breeze. The immediate, supernatural drying causes their soaked cloaks to flash-dry and stiffen into rigid boards, severely restricting their arm movements and reducing their mobility.
- Facing freezing water-wraiths or frost-oozes haunting a glacier tunnel, the user channels Moisture-Drawing Leech, drawing gallons of liquid form directly into the carnelian focus and shattering their cohesion with explosive bursts of venting steam.
- Flooded Subterranean Dungeons, Sewers, and Sunken Crypts:
- Environmental Context: Torrents of rushing wastewater, ceiling seepage, flooded floor-traps, mildew-eaten ropes, and slippery slime-coated flagstones.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- When wading through waist-deep cisterns or sewer spillways, Desiccating Aura of the Hearth prevents scrolls, spellbooks, paper maps, and leather map-cases inside backpacks from becoming illegible mush.
- Wounded companions prone to septic fever from filthy sewer water can rest securely under Solar Curing-Dome of the Persimmon, which evaporates stagnant moisture and neutralizes bacterial rot from damp clothing while they bandage their injuries.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- When a dungeon corridor is flooded by a triggered trap or breached reservoir, the user points the staff and activates Moisture-Drawing Leech, sucking up ten gallons of surging water in an instant to create an air pocket or drain a sunken lever mechanism.
- Against gelatinous oozes, sewage slimes, or water-bloated cadavers blocking a narrow archway, the avatar drives the spade-point into the floor and channels Parching Sun-Breeze, rapidly baking the sludge creatures into brittle, crumbling husks.
- Sunken River Forges, Torrential Valleys, and Storm-Lashed Farmlands:
- Environmental Context: Overflowing irrigation canals, soaked earthen dams, rain-ruined granaries, and river-bandits operating out of flat-bottomed skiffs.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- During a catastrophic cloudburst that threatens to ruin an agrarian settlement’s grain storage, the user drives the staff into the center of the loft and activates Solar Curing-Dome of the Persimmon, repelling humidity and preserving hundreds of bushels of spelt and dried figs from rot.
- Crossing a violent, swollen river ford with pack beasts, the wielder holds the staff high; Desiccating Aura of the Hearth maintains the buoyancy and dry seal of panniers, leather sacks, and wool fleece bundles even if temporarily splashed by river spray.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- When attacked by river pirates whose canoes attempt to ram the party’s craft, the user targets the bilge of the enemy skiff or a swimming boarder with Moisture-Drawing Leech, desiccating the swimmer or drying out the green-timber joins of their vessel to cause stress fractures.
- Striking at unarmored bandits with the staff as a versatile two-handed quarterstaff, the wielder raps the haft against an attacker’s sodden leather jerkin, discharging radiant heat through the carnelian cabochon to scorch through the wet material.

Perception of Activation:
- User’s Perspective:
- Sight:
- The fiery orange-red carnelian cabochon mounted within the bronze sun-burst crown flares with a deep, steady inner ember-glow.
- Wisps of clear, shimmering heat mirages swirl outward along the three unfolded ash cross-spokes, distorting the air above the rack like air above a hot baker’s griddle.
- Thin plumes of harmless white steam curl off any suspended wool garments, wet boots, or damp herbs, rising straight into the air before vanishing instantly.
- Sound:
- The three miniature bronze poppy bells beneath the crown let out a soft, continuous, dry rustling chime as thermal drafts rise past their iron clappers.
- A faint, sharp hiss like water sprinkled across a hot sauna stone whispers from the hazelwood shaft as surrounding moisture is drawn out and vented.
- The muted, damp squelch of mud or saturated ground beneath the user’s boots gives way to the crisp, satisfying crunch of dry soil or hardening dirt.
- Touch:
- The hazelwood haft warms comfortably beneath the hands, radiating a steady, dry heat that soothes chilled knuckles, aching wrists, and damp palms.
- A dry, gentle updraft like a summer mountain breeze caresses the face, wrists, and throat, quickly evaporating sticky cold sweat, rain clamminess, and chill.
- Wet, heavy clothing worn by the user immediately begins to feel lighter, loftier, and free of soggy, chafing drag.
- Smell:
- A comforting, rich bouquet fills the breath, smelling of sun-baked linen, warm cedar shavings, toasted walnut hulls, and sweet dried persimmons.
- Underlying scents of sour bog mud, rotting vegetation, moldy wool, and foul puddle water are instantly overwhelmed and neutralized by the dry hearth aroma.
- Taste:
- The back of the palate catches a light, clean dryness reminiscent of toasted grain, dried mountain apple rings, and hot stone-oven crust.
- Extra-Sensory Perception:
- Desiccation Echo: The user senses an intuitive, tactile awareness of the moisture levels in nearby objects, perceiving waterlogged packs, hidden damp hollows, or mud-slimy predators as cold, heavy spiritual knots awaiting the drying touch.
- Hearth-Grounded Serenity: A deep, agrarian peace settles over the mind, dispelling the miserable lethargy and mental numbness brought on by days of freezing rain, damp camps, and sodden boots.
- Thermal Resonance: The avatar feels an energetic tether between the iron spade-foot driven into the earth and the warm carnelian above, perceiving the surrounding perimeter as an inviolable dry threshold.
- Sight:
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Sight:
- Observers see the orange carnelian at the head of the staff light up with a vibrant, ember-like glow that casts long, warm amber rays across the ground.
- Waves of visible heat haze ripple outward in a clean circular dome around the staff, causing water droplets falling through the air to flash into steam and veer away.
- Mud puddles and sodden ground around the planted staff visibly lighten in color, crusting over and solidifying into clean, dry earth within moments.
- Sound:
- A soothing, dry acoustic presence fills the area—the gentle clinking of tiny bronze bells mingling with the dry snap and gentle hiss of moisture evaporating.
- Touch:
- Stepping inside the boundary feels like walking through the door of a warm, fire-lit farmhouse on a freezing rainy evening; a wave of dry 21°C air dispels skin chills and damp shivers.
- Wet cloaks and waterlogged boots worn by observers begin shedding excess water rapidly, warming through the lining without burning skin.
- Smell:
- The surrounding air suddenly smells of fresh laundry drying in high mountain sunlight, sweet dried fruits, and dry firewood, wiping away the rank stench of swamp decay or wet animal fur.
- Taste:
- A subtle warmth coats the tongue, tasting faintly of toasted sweet bread and dry alpine air.
- Extra-Sensory Perception:
- Allies feel an immediate lifting of mental fatigue, experiencing the comforting psychological shelter of an established village hearth even in the wild.

- Eliminates trench foot, wet chafing, hypothermic shivers, and waterborne fungal rot, ensuring equipment, bedrolls, and boots remain pristine in damp environments.
- Preservation of Perishables & Sensitive Gear:
- Completely protects paper maps, spell scrolls, dry rations, bowstrings, and medicinal herb caches from water spoilage, mildew, and warping.
- Instant Tinder & Combustible Preparation:
- Dries soaked firewood, wet moss, and damp branches in moments, guaranteeing reliable campfire ignition under adverse conditions.
- Targeted Offense Against Amphibious & Slime Entities:
- Inflicts severe desiccation trauma, mobility penalties, and structural damage to water-oozes, mud-golems, and swamp predators by forcibly evaporating their moisture.
- Absolute Environmental Comfort & Health:
- Negatives:
- Evaporative Steam Flare:
- Flashing large quantities of water or soaked cloaks into steam produces a noticeable plume of warm white vapor, which can compromise visual concealment in dark caves or low fog.
- Stationary Anchor Requirement:
- Maximum shelter efficiency (Solar Curing-Dome) requires driving the spade-point firmly into the ground and remaining within the 10-foot perimeter, preventing rapid tactical retreat while deployed.
- Extreme Dehydration Risk for Captive Water Stores:
- Careless directional activation of Parching Sun-Breeze or Moisture-Drawing Leech near open waterskins or ceramic drinking gourds can inadvertently evaporate vital drinking supplies.
- Brittle Over-Drying on Untended Materials:
- Leaving delicate, thin leather laces, sinew bindings, or cured leaf-wraps suspended directly over the carnelian focus for prolonged periods can cause them to become overly stiff and brittle if not removed once dried.
- Evaporative Steam Flare:
Crafting Recipe: Satsnakheli Hearth-Drying Rack-Staff

- Lapidary Setting: Minimum skill rank of 2 (required to mount the carnelian cabochon without fracturing the stone under heat).
- Mind’s Eye Focusing / Satsnakheli Hearth-Craft: Minimum skill rank of 2 (required to bind the desiccating solar ward into the carnelian and hazelwood matrix).
- Crafting Steps:
- Shaping and Carving the Hazelwood Shaft:
- Take the fire-cured hazelwood pole and strip all remaining outer bark using a drawknife.
- True the shaft to a uniform taper, maintaining a robust one-and-a-half-inch diameter along the grip and a slight flare at the base.
- Using v-parting tools and gouges, carve repeating seven-rayed Borjgali sun-spirals and stylized drooping fig branches along the upper eighteen inches of the wood.
- Sand the staff smooth down to 600 grit, ensuring no splintering around the grip or relief edges.
- Fashioning the Ash Folding Cross-Spokes:
- Cut the three mountain ash slats to size, rounding the outer ends into smooth finial bulbs to prevent snagging textiles.
- Drill precise pivot-pin holes through the base of each spoke and test-fit them against the bronze hinge brackets.
- Cut matching stop-notches into the spoke bases so that when deployed, the crossbars lock horizontally at perpendicular 120-degree offsets around the shaft.
- Drill small retaining holes through each arm to receive the bronze cotter pins.
- Casting and Fitting the Bronze Mounts:
- Cast the bronze sun-burst crown collar and clean away casting flash with fine files.
- Seat the lower cast bronze ferrule and forged iron spade-point onto the bottom of the staff, securing it with two crosswise bronze rivets ground flush with the metal sleeve.
- Fit the bronze crown collar onto the top tenon of the hazelwood haft, bonding it with heated cedar pitch and a hidden bronze dowel pin.
- Suspend the three miniature bronze poppy bells from the underside loops of the crown collar using short bronze jump rings, ensuring the clapper beads swing freely.
- Setting the Carnelian Cabochon:
- Seat the oval carnelian cabochon firmly into the four-prong sun-burst bezel at the crown of the bronze collar.
- Warm the bronze prongs gently with a small alcohol flame to soften the metal.
- Use a bezel roller to burnish the prongs smoothly over the bevel of the carnelian, anchoring the crystal against impact and vibration without applying uneven pressure to the stone.
- Seasoning and Satsnakheli Solar Consecration:
- Saturate the entire hazelwood haft and ash spokes with the walnut oil and cedar resin blend, rubbing the grain vigorously with wool fleece until warm to the touch.
- Place the assembled staff within a smoke-box fueled by dried vine-shoots, wild fig leaves, and cured mountain persimmon peels for three hours to impart the permanent aroma of dry fruit and cedar smoke.
- At midday under an unclouded sun, drive the iron spade-point into the ground, unfold all three ash cross-spokes, and hang three damp linen strips upon them.
- Channel mental energy through the Mind’s Eye into the carnelian while chanting the Satsnakheli invocation of the drying mountain wind (Chiri-Kari).
- When the linen strips flash-dry into warm, crisp cloth and the bronze poppy bells emit a dry, rustling chime, the carnelian will pulse with an enduring inner amber light, sealing the enchantment.
- Shaping and Carving the Hazelwood Shaft:
High Torrent Concerning Wool-Washer Woman, Rotten Water-King of Ditch, and Spoke-Tree That Drank Rain
In the turn of seasons before the bull had submitted his brow to the notched timber, and before the hearth-builders of the middle plateau had learned the turning of the red tile, the water of the sky did not know how to stop. It was written in the water-damaged scrolls of the sheep-fold that the rain fell for twenty-two moons without the showing of a single dry gravel upon the road. The mud had grown as deep as the flank of an ox; the fleece upon the backs of the living ewes began to sprout grey water-mushrooms; and the wheat in the earthen storage-crocks turned to green slime that smelled like the belly of a dead frog.
In that sorrowful place beneath the dripping alder-trees, where the mountain sheds its grey tears into the deep trench, dwelt a woman whose name is recorded upon the broken tile as Elene-of-the-Hearth-Tongue, though the salt-sellers called her only the Washer of Black Wool. She was not a keeper of heavy bronze swords, nor did she sit upon the high bench of the village judges. She owned only an iron-shod staff cut from the hard hazel that grows upon the sun-facing cliff, a bronze kettle for boiling green walnut leaves, and three racks of mountain ash whereon she hung the damp blankets of the carters.
Now, beneath the great swamp where the three rivers vomit their black froth, there ruled an ancient crawler of the wet muck whose designation in the elder tongue was Tsqaldidoba-Mefe, the Master of Rotten Water. He was not a creature of bone or dry hide; his flesh was composed of drowned ditch-grass, dead river-leeches, and the cold grease that floats upon stagnant cisterns. He hated the dry bread; he hated the smell of cedar-wood smoke; and most of all, he hated the women who hung clean linen in the wind, for wherever cloth dries, the dominion of the slime must retreat.
The Water-Demon swelled himself with the runoff of forty melting glaciers until his body was like a moving bog ninety cubits wide. He crept up through the stone sluices of the valley, drowning the barley terraces and filling the stone huts with two spans of foul black bile.
The people climbed to their roof-poles, crying aloud in the tongue of the water-bird: “The wool upon our bodies is rotting like dead weeds! Our toes are dropping into the mud like soft plums! The fire is dead upon the hearth, for the wood weeps water from both ends and will not burn! Who will take the iron spit and drive this sour sponge back into the salt lake?”
Then Elene stepped forth from her stone shed upon the hillside. The rain beat upon her grey cloak, but beneath her arm she carried a staff four cubits long, made from the heart of a dry hazel-trunk carved with the seven-legged sun-wheels of the high road. Across the neck of the wood was fastened a collar of cast bronze with three arms of ash wood folded down like the legs of a sleeping grasshopper, and upon the very summit burned a round stone of orange carnelian, like a dry ember taken from the center of a blacksmith’s furnace. Beneath the bronze rim hung three small bells shaped like the seed-husks of the mountain poppy, holding little stones of iron that rattled whenever the dry air moved.
The head-man of the drowned terrace shouted through the rain: “Foolish woman of the sheep-pens! Do you go down against the great mud-swallower with a stick for drying shirts? His belly has swallowed forty bronze shields, and his breath will melt the marrow in your knees!”
Elene did not turn her neck, nor did she speak a curse of seven words. Her sandals did not squelch in the muck, for wherever the iron point of her hazel-stick struck the gravel, the water hissed and leaped away as white vapor, leaving a circle of hard, cracked clay where a dry foot might walk without sinking.
She went down to the edge of the great drowning-basin where the water-monster lay spread out like a greasy pelt upon the flooded fields. The creature saw her coming; he opened a mouth twelve cubits wide that was lined with the teeth of rotten pikes, and spat a great wave of stagnant ditch-brew, cold as winter hail, intended to sweep her down into the black silt of his bed.
Elene halted upon the bank. She did not run, nor did she cry out to the mountain saints.
She lifted the hazelwood staff with both hands and drove the iron spade-point deep into the muddy river-shingle until it struck the living bedrock below. Then she reached up with her fingers, loosened the bronze cotter pins, and threw open the three ash cross-spokes so that they stood out over the flood like the arms of an ancient drying-frame.
“The sun has not died,” spake Elene, and her words were like the rustle of dry persimmon peels in an autumn loft. “The hearth is not drowned while a single ember lives in the stone. Let the water of the ditch return to the ditch, and let the breath of the mountain wind bake the wet earth into crust!”
She rapped the bronze collar with the knuckle of her thumb.
The three poppy-bells chimed with a dry, sharp clatter that sounded like mountain sheep walking across slate. The orange carnelian cabochon at the crown did not send forth red flames; instead, it opened its inner heart with a great, glowing warmth like the stones of an oven when the dry oak boughs have finished burning.
A wind arose from the cross-spokes—not the wet wind of the canyon that tears the thatch from the eaves, but the parching mountain gale that the carters call the Chiri-Kari, the breath that dries the sliced persimmons upon their wicker trays until their skin turns white with sugar.
The air around the staff began to shimmer with waves of trembling heat. The great wave of black slime that the demon had spewed did not touch the hem of Elene’s wool dress; as it met the radiant dome of the carnelian, it flashed into a towering pillar of sweet white steam that rose straight into the grey rain-clouds like the smoke of forty sacrifice-fires.
“My skin is tightening!” shrieked the Water-King from the mud-hollow. “The fat of my liver is turning to yellow dust! Who has put the red baker into the river-trench?”
He threw himself forward, attempting to wrap his watery limbs around the hazelwood shaft to shatter it into wet splinters. But as his muddy bulk surged against the three unfolded ash spokes, the wood drank his substance with the thirst of parched earth in the dog-days of summer.
Ten gallons, twenty gallons, a hundred jars of his stagnant water were sucked into the bronze throat of the collar, venting out through the poppy bells as harmless clouds of dry, cedar-scented air. The grey slime upon his belly cracked like an ungreased cart-wheel under the summer sun; his long ditch-grass fingers shriveled into brittle chaff that broke against the pebbles; and the cold, wet malice in his fourteen eyes dried into little lumps of grey salt that were scattered by the warm wind.
Within the space of three water-clocks, the great flood that had covered the three valleys was no more.
The lake of mud did not drain away through the ditches; it dried where it lay, becoming a vast, firm meadow of clean brown earth that smelled of sun-baked clover, toasted walnuts, and fresh linen. The rain stopped falling from the sky, for the column of warm steam that rose from the staff had torn the black belly of the storm asunder, letting the yellow eye of the sun shine down upon the river-stones for the first time in twenty-two moons.
The people of the terrace climbed down from their roof-poles. They fell upon their knees, weeping because their feet were dry, and their boots no longer stuck to the clay. They brought their wet blankets, their water-soaked grain sacks, and the sodden garments of their little children, and hung them upon the three ash arms of the staff where it stood planted in the center of the meadow.
Within the twinkling of a swallow’s wing, the water left the fibers; the heavy cloaks became light, warm, and sweet-smelling, and the damp wheat in the sacks dried into golden kernels ready for the millstone.
When they looked for the water-monster, they found only a hollow heap of dry ditch-drift and cracked river-clams, which the village herd-boys trampled under their sandals with shouts of joy until it was only dust upon the road.
The people sought to take Elene and set upon her head a crown beaten from the gold washed down by the flood, but she had already pulled her hazelwood staff from the bedrock, folded the ash spokes down against the wood, and pinned them with her bronze pins.
“Keep your soft gold for the tax-gatherers,” said the Washer of Black Wool, leaning upon the carnelian head as she turned back toward the high cliff-path. “When the ditch swells again, take the hazelwood and the ash, make the bells speak, and drive the point into the stone. So long as the woman knows how to dry the wool, the worm of the wet mud cannot make his bed upon your floor.”
She went up into the mist of the higher crags, and the fragrance of dried cedar, sweet persimmon, and sun-baked linen followed her like a sheep-dog until she was lost to the eyes of the valley.
This history was inscribed with a heated bronze bodkin upon three boards of dried mountain boxwood, which were preserved in the loft of the fruit-curing guild until the mountain fire consumed the town; but the grandmothers who sit beside the drying-frames remember the words, and they teach the young girls to turn their spindles to the rhythm of the three poppy-bells whenever the spring floods begin to chew the bottom step of the sheep-stair.
Moral of the Story
He who would dwell in peace must remember that the rot of the world does not conquer by the violence of the storm alone, but by the slow, creeping damp that robs the spirit of its fire and leaves the heart sodden with despair; therefore, let the hearth be kept dry, let the honest tool be honored above the battle-spear, and let no man surrender his hope to the rising muck while a single spark remains to turn the water into steam.

- Skill: Melee (Bludgeon or Staff)
- Damage: 2D Stun (or 1D+2 lethal bludgeoning when striking with the iron spade-foot)
- Form: A four-and-a-half-foot pole of molecularly stabilized hazelwood composite, fitted with three hinged ash drying battens, three acoustic resonance bells, an iron ground spade, and an orange-red carnelian thermal dissipation emitter set into an alloy sun-burst collar.
- Sensor Profile: Detectable infrared thermal flare within 3 meters when active; neutralizes ambient moisture signatures and emits aromatic cedar-terpene vapor.
- Passive Traits:
- Moisture Dispersion Field: The staff projects a short-range micro-climatic aura covering a 2-meter radius. Textiles, paper maps, rations, and sensitive portable electronics cannot be damaged by rain, high humidity, or immersion spray; soaked items dry completely in 60 seconds.
- Foot-Rot Protection: The user gains DM+2 on all END checks to resist immersion foot, systemic waterborne toxins, and hypothermia caused by saturated gear.
- Flash Kindler: Instantly removes all water content from damp organic fuel, granting DM+2 on Survival checks to establish campfires under adverse weather conditions.
- Active Features:
- Parching Heat Flare:
- Time: Significant Action
- Mechanics: The emitter unleashes a 5-meter cone of desiccating hot air. Saturated mud and standing pools bake into hard crust for 1 combat round. Biological targets composed primarily of liquid or slime suffer 2D damage. Targets wearing soaked garments must succeed on an Agility check (8+) or suffer DM–2 on physical actions for 1 round due to stiffened outerwear.
- Moisture Siphon:
- Time: Significant Action
- Mechanics: Siphons up to 40 liters of non-potable water from a nearby source or drenched target within 3 meters, venting it as non-toxic steam. Drains flooded control panels or deals 1D+3 damage to aquatic organisms, forcing an END check (8+) to avoid losing their next minor action.
- Microclimate Habitat Ring:
- Time: Significant Action
- Duration: Up to 8 hours
- Mechanics: Planted in the soil with the three ash battens extended, the staff establishes a 3-meter habitat zone of dry 21°C air that deflects precipitation and prevents condensation. Travellers resting inside recover an additional 1 characteristic point during medical recovery or normal sleep cycles.
