Ritual 119 of the Alchemical Phial of Sustenance

Lore: Conceived within the quiet dispensaries of early Golden Dawn hospices across Saṃsāra, this slender vessel was designed by initiate-dieticians aligned with the sphere of Yesod (the Foundation) and the alchemical element of Salt. Recognizing that spiritual ascension requires an untainted and precisely harmonized bodily temple, esoteric nutrisionists utilized the phial to balance visceral humors, measure energetic density in food rations, and neutralize subtle impurities before digestion could cloud the etheric centers.

Description: A palm-length cylindrical vial crafted from hand-blown leaded glass, bound top and bottom in bands of etched yellow brass. The brass collar is chased with the planetary seals of the Moon and Mercury, alongside Hebrew characters representing physical vitality and bodily foundation. Encased within the sealed core of the phial is an amber-tinted mineral oil suspension containing four tiny, free-floating silver beads engraved with the alchemical symbols for Salt, Sulfur, Mercury, and Lead. When dipped into or held directly over victuals and potable liquids, the beads rise or fall according to the food’s purity and nutritive balance.

Commerce and Exchange of the Alchemical Phial of Sustenance

  • Apothecary Dispensaries and Dietetic Guildhalls: Situated within the paved hospital arcades and collegiate quadrangles of major settlements, these orderly shops feature polished oak counters, hanging bundles of drying herbs, and glass-fronted cases filled with calibrated pipettes and alchemical tinctures. When an expedition cook, monastery dietician, or adventuring healer visits to acquire a verified diagnostic vessel, the dispensary master charges a standard retail price of 12 silver pieces logged to the buyer’s World Bank ledger. If an avatar brings in a recovered phial in good condition, the resident master apothecary inspects the suspension density against a candle; a verified Tier 1 seller receives a clean payout of 10 silver pieces credited directly to their bank slip. Initiates holding certified credentials with the Guild of Alchemical Dietetics receive an institutional subsidy, purchasing the phial for 10 silver and 8 copper pieces.
  • Hermetic Lodge Chapterhouses and Yesodic Sanctuaries: Located behind heavy cedar doors in esoteric academies and monastic retreats dedicated to bodily purification, these quiet, incense-scented scriptoriums trade in ritual implements aligned with the sphere of Yesod. The phials are displayed upon clean white linen trays alongside silver measuring spoons, salt blocks, and purification braziers. Lodge proctors inspect offered pieces for proper alignment with lunar and mercurial seals, offering a delver 11 silver pieces via the World Bank registry for a genuine vessel. Unaffiliated travelers wishing to purchase the phial as an expedition tool are charged a full curio price of 14 silver pieces, while sworn lodge initiates in good standing can acquire it at the subsidized fraternity rate of 11 silver and 5 copper pieces.
  • Frontier Provisioners and Caravan Commissaries: Stationed at wilderness trailheads, desert way-stations, and mining perimeter depots where water sources are foul and dry rations turn moldy, these rugged log-and-canvas trading posts specialize in basic survival gear. The quartermaster trades strictly in items that keep supply lines alive. A traveler offloading a surplus phial can sell it directly to the commissary for 9 silver pieces routed through standard bank exchange, as the depot constantly needs tools to screen water barrels and grain bins. When an outbound exploration company buys the phial to survive extended marches through blighted territories, the scarcity of reliable purifiers pushes the purchase price to 13 silver pieces.
  • Curio Exchanges and Antiquarian Pawnbrokers: Found in crowded dockside bazaars and narrow tenement alleys, these dusty shops feature shelves packed with brass instruments, secondhand canteens, and unlabeled vials. The pawnbroker tests the glass for cracks and checks the buoyancy of the four internal silver beads with a magnet. An avatar liquidating a phial here receives a quick salvage payout of 8 silver pieces transferred to their bank slip. Prospective customers sorting through the trays can buy the uncertified phial for a flat tag price of 12 silver pieces, with the merchant refusing haggling unless the customer can demonstrate significant local guild influence.
  • Black Market Fences and Undercity Food Smugglers: Hidden in damp drainage vaults, sewer distilleries, and illicit brewing dens beneath quarantine districts, these clandestine operations trade in uninspected foodstuffs, contraband spirits, and emergency filtration gear. In environments where food is deliberately adulterated or spiked with street narcotics, a tool that isolates toxins and purifies spoilage without notifying public health inspectors commands great value. A smuggler or rogue selling a clean phial directly to an undercity meat dealer bypasses the World Bank entirely, receiving 18 silver pieces in physical, untraceable silver coin. An unlicensed cook or outlaw looking to buy the vessel under the table must pay a steep black-market rate of 22 silver pieces in raw coin to secure the tool without asking questions.

Tactical and Environmental Applications of the Alchemical Phial of Sustenance

  • Barren Badlands and Desiccated Wastes: Across sun-bleached salt flats and arid canyons where potable water is scarce and carrion heat breeds rapid rot, metabolic endurance dictates survival. Defensively, the expedition dietician uses Ascetic Metabolism and the Humoral Trophic Readout to monitor the caravan’s dwindling water casks; when a desert well turns out to be stagnant, alkaline alkali-brine, the dietician dispenses a single drop of the Tincture of Purified Vitality, instantly precipitating out the caustic salts and rendering the muddy sludge into pure, cool drinking water that sustains the party on half-rations. Offensively, when cornered in a dry gulch by territorial sand-raiders who guard the only natural oasis, the user engages Assay Nutritive Matrix to identify the exact mineral composition of the raiders’ open fermentation troughs; by introducing a reactive counter-catalyst derived from the phial’s mineral suspension, the user accelerates the fermentation into a volatile, foul-tasting vinegar that ruins the enemy band’s stored supplies, forcing them to abandon their fortified ridge without exchanging a single arrow.
  • Fungal Caverns and Subterranean Under-Realms: Within sunless cave systems choked with toxic spore-caps, moldering moss, and blind cave vermin, distinguishing edible nourishment from lethal neurotoxins is constant guesswork. Defensively, when party members gather for a brief rest, the user unclasps the phial to perform Assay Nutritive Matrix over harvested subterranean mushrooms; the silver beads sink rapidly beneath the black sediment line, warning the frontliner that the seemingly safe tubers contain paralytic cordyceps before anyone takes a bite. Offensively, when hunting a pack of predatory troglodytes that rely on keen olfactory senses to track the party, the dietician treats a bait chunk of blind-cave lizard with an inverted droplet from the phial; the alchemical reaction strips the meat of its organic musk and converts its lipid fat into an aggressively bitter, phlegm-choking vapor when ingested, sickening the beasts’ alpha tracker and blunting their scent-tracking pursuit.
  • Besieged Citadels and Starving Strongholds: Behind locked portcullises and stone ramparts where enemy blockades cut off grain shipments and disease festers in the granaries, food distribution is a tactical weapon. Defensively, during an outbreak of ergotism among the castle guards, the dietician deploys the phial’s Humoral Trophic Readout across the emergency flour barrels, weeding out contaminated rye before hallucinogenic gangrene can incapacitate the archers on the wall. Offensively, when infiltrating the besieging army’s forward camp under cover of darkness, the user uncorks the phial’s secondary nozzle over the enemy’s main stew caldrons; rather than introducing a crude poison that an enemy scout might smell, the user introduces a subtle alchemical imbalance that sours the lipid broths into an indigestible, heavy melancholic sludge, causing severe lethargy and debilitating abdominal cramps throughout the enemy vanguard right before dawn break-out operations.
  • Aristocratic Galas and Diplomatic Pavilions: In high-society banquet halls where poisoned wine and sweet confections conceal political assassinations, sensory subtlety is paramount. Defensively, the avatar discreetly holds the palm-length glass tube beneath their napkin while hovering over a dessert of candied figs; noticing the silver Mercury bead spike to the top while the Salt bead plummets, the user whispers a discreet warning to the visiting ambassador that their sugar glaze has been laced with colorless powdered glass and arsenic. Offensively, during a tense public toast where an arrogant rival noble boasts of their private vintage wine cellar, the user uses the phial’s resonance to subtly alter the energetic balance of the noble’s poured vintage; with a casual brush of the hand and a muttered word of Yesod, the user destabilizes the wine’s acidity, instantly curdling the vintage into cloudy, sour dregs in front of the entire court, exposing the host’s refined cellar as a fraud and ruining their social standing.
  • Contaminated Slums and Industrial Runoff Districts: Inside congested tenement blocks and canal shanties where factory runoff taints municipal water pumps and butcher stalls peddle spoiled tallow, biological rot runs rampant. Defensively, the dietician hovers the phial over communal soup pots in an impromptu refuge kitchen, using Tincture of Purified Vitality to eliminate lethal typhus bacteria and heavy metal runoff from river water, keeping the local resistance cell well-fed and combat-ready despite absolute blockades. Offensively, when pursuing a corrupt tenement slumlord who uses drugged rations to keep labor gangs docile and dependent, the user deploys the phial to analyze the chemical narcotic infused into the workers’ communal bread; by distributing an alchemical neutralizing broth calibrated precisely against the narcotic’s signature, the dietician instantly breaks the workers’ chemical lethargy, inciting a furious, clear-headed riot that overruns the slumlord’s private security enclave.

Perception of Activation:

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective: When the name of Gabriel is whispered and the brass collar is rotated, the sealed amber mineral oil within the phial begins to swirl with micro-currents of pale golden light. The four engraved silver beads drift upward from the sediment line, bobbing and aligning vertically according to the food’s trophic matrix. As a purifying droplet forms at the brass nozzle, it hangs suspended like a liquid topaz bead; touching it to food or drink sends a visible ripple of warm honey-gold light washing across the surface, causing mold, grey rot, and chemical scum to shrivel, dissolve, and vanish into nothingness.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Onlookers see the brass collar glow with a gentle, moonlit silver-amber radiance. The small glass cylinder illuminates the bearer’s hand, and the suspended droplet gleams brightly as it falls, producing a subtle, luminous ring that expands outward through the bowl or goblet before fading into clear nourishment.
    • Positives: Provides immediate, unmistakable visual proof that sustenance has been stripped of biological rot and toxins, clearly revealing its nutritional balance without requiring guess-testing.
    • Negatives: The bright golden luminescence draws unwanted attention in dim dungeons or stealthy camp environments, readily signaling to observers that food or drink is being tampered with.
  • Hearing:
    • User’s Perspective: The user hears a low, soothing liquid murmur within the phial, like gentle mountain water trickling over rounded river stones, mingled with the faint, rhythmic ticking of the silver beads settling against one another. When the drop strikes contaminated liquid, a crisp, effervescent fizzing sound rises, reminiscent of opening a sealed fermentation crock.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Bystanders hear a faint, pleasant chiming hum from the silver beads within the glass, followed by a soft hiss as the tincture dissolves impurities in the meal.
    • Positives: The shift in audio pitch serves as an immediate acoustic verification when the neutralization reaction completes.
    • Negatives: In quiet mess halls or during clandestine surveillance, the distinct effervescent hiss and crystalline chime can alert nearby guards or banquet hosts.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective: The sharp, nauseating stench of rotten meat, sulfurous water, or acrid venom is instantly banished, replaced by a deep, comforting aroma of freshly baked whole-grain bread, cracked sea salt, and wild mountain thyme.
    • Observer’s Perspective: A sudden, appetizing scent of wholesome hearth cooking and herbal sweetness drifts across the immediate area, cutting through damp dungeon smells or sour tavern odors.
    • Positives: Neutralizes repulsive odors that cause gagging or appetite suppression, allowing travelers to comfortably consume coarse, unappetizing trail supplies.
    • Negatives: The rich aroma of warm bread and herbs carries on the breeze, potentially drawing hungry wildlife or prowling scavengers toward the encampment.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective: A crisp, refreshing sensation coats the palate—tasting of cool spring water with a trace of mineral salts and clean grain mash—leaving the mouth feeling cleansed and invigorated.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers perceive no direct taste effects, though they may note the user visibly relaxing as their dry mouth and hunger pangs ease.
    • Positives: Even the foulest, brackish bog water or stale iron-rations treated by the phial take on a clean, mineral-rich, pleasant flavor.
    • Negatives: The residual mineral-salt flavor temporarily masks subtle culinary nuances, making fine wines or complex gourmet spices taste plain and basic for an hour afterward.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective: The glass cylinder warms comfortably in the palm to the temperature of fresh milk, vibrating with a steady, rhythmic pulse that mirrors a calm resting heartbeat. The brass nozzle feels smooth and slightly slick, emitting a cool, refreshing mist across the fingertips as the droplet releases.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Anyone touching the user’s hand feels a mild, soothing warmth and a faint electrostatic tingle, as if touching a sun-warmed river stone.
    • Positives: The haptic pulse steadies the user’s hand, ensuring accurate dispensing even in shaking, freezing, or high-stress conditions.
    • Negatives: The phial’s smooth, oily warmth can make the glass slippery if handled with muddy or grease-stained fingers, risking an accidental drop.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Visceral Satiety Projection:
      • User’s Perspective: Through their internal energetic awareness, the user feels an immediate, phantom sensation of full-body satisfaction. They perceive their own stomach and digestive channels relaxing as the etheric energy of Yesod floods their system, intuitively calculating precisely how many hours of physical exertion the analyzed meal will support before fatigue sets in.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Sensitive empaths or divine spellcasters nearby feel a wave of physical contentment wash over the space, as if observing a starving traveler finish a feast.
      • Positives: Eliminates overeating and accurately gauges metabolic burn, ensuring the party budgets supplies with mathematical precision.
      • Negatives: The sensation of phantom fullness can temporarily make the user feel slightly sluggish or heavy-limbed if they attempt an explosive sprint immediately after calibration.
    • Humoral Trophic Clairvoyance:
      • User’s Perspective: Looking through the Mind’s Eye at the dish, the user observes the energetic breakdown of the ingredients as colored, circulating conduits. Sanguine vitality manifests as bright crimson threads, Phlegmatic hydration as pale azure ribbons, Choleric fuel as dancing orange embers, and Melancholic mineral mass as steady grey roots. If foul toxins or venomous tethers exist, they appear as discordant, jagged black barbs that disintegrate as the tincture spreads.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Other avatars using their Mind’s Eye perceive the astral symbol of the Moon and the Salt triangle hovering momentarily over the dish, binding the scattered energy of the ingredients into an orderly geometric matrix.
      • Positives: Allows the dietician to customize food intake for specific party members, tailoring meals to replenish physical stamina, calm mental anxiety, or counter elemental exhaustion.
      • Negatives: Processing the detailed elemental flow of biological matter requires intense micro-focus, temporarily causing mild spatial dissociation from physical surroundings.

    • One small measure of purified salt (for the ritual bath and suspension).
    • One measure of alchemical mercury.
    • One small sample of lead (for the lead bead).
    • Five paces of fine hemp or cotton cord (for the neck sling).
  • Tools Required:
    • One glass-blowing tube and crucible furnace (suitable for small, detailed glasswork).
    • One jeweler’s anvil and chasing hammer (for metal forming and etching).
    • One set of fine diamond-tipped gravers and metal scribes (for sigil engraving).
    • One set of precision balancing calipers.
    • One ceramic mortar and pestle.
    • One alcohol spirit lamp.
    • One non-magnetic brazier or kiln.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Alchemy: Rank 3 or higher.
    • Glassworking: Rank 2 or higher.
    • Metalworking: Rank 2 or higher.
    • Esoteric Runecraft: Rank 1 or higher.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Melt the leaded glass in the crucible, blowing and shaping it into a flawless, uniform cylinder roughly the diameter of a finger and palm-length. Annale it slowly to prevent internal fractures.
    • Mill or hammer the brass ingots into thin bands, forming two circular collars to fit precisely over the top and bottom of the glass cylinder.
    • Anneal and form the silver wire into four small, identical beads, carefully shaping them to float freely in oil.
    • Using the gravers, chase the lunar and mercurial sigils and the Hebrew characters for vitality (חי) and foundation (יסוד) into the brass collars.
    • Engrave the four silver beads with the alchemical symbols for Salt (☉), Sulfur (🜍), Mercury (☿), and Lead (♄). Temper the lead bead so it remains the heaviest of the four.
    • Pulverize the Tier 1 Magic Crystal in the mortar, mixing it with the quicksilver to create an alchemical amalgam slurry.
    • Rub this slurry into the engraved sigils on the brass collars, heating them over the spirit lamp until the amalgam sets, causing the symbols to permanently retain a subtle, internal luminescence.
    • Cleanse the four beads in a bath of purified salt water and mercurial solution while reciting the standard Yesod harmonic invocation.
    • Carefully introduce the beads and the quicksilver-salt mixture into the glass cylinder, then slowly pour in the amber-tinted mineral oil. Seal the bottom brass band permanently.
    • Set the secondary drip nozzle into the top brass cap and affix it to the phial, ensuring the inner cap mechanism is functional. Recite the Hexagram of Earth vibration while sealing the final connection.
    • Soak the hemp cord in the remaining mercury and salt bath before plaiting it and attaching it to the bottom brass eyelets, ensuring telluric grounding through the sling.

Amber Water-Tube and Famine-Warlord Who Ate His Own Shields

In the dry times of the cracked mud-crust, when the red river-oxen had died of thirst in their harness-wood, and the grand star-ball VaporSphere did hang above the hill-crests like an unskimmed pot of yellow goat-fat, there ruled over the dry cisterns of ancient Kadur an iron-handed master of many spears named Warlord Bakka-Ur. He was a man with teeth like broken flints and a throat that was never filled, though he caused two hundred water-wagons to bring him mountain-snow each day, and his meat-pots were ever boiling with the tongues of fat mountain-rams.

Now it was the manner of Warlord Bakka-Ur to keep his foot upon the necks of the ditch-scratchers and the wheat-reapers. When the Great Dust-Sickness came down from the dry hills, the granaries of the towns were turned to black flour, and the water-tanks did smell like the belly of an unburied donkey. The common ditch-folk did eat dry grass-hoppers and powdered sheep-pellets, dying upon their threshing-floors like flies in winter-frost. Yet Warlord Bakka-Ur did sit within his high tower of unbaked diorite, roaring through his beard for hot broth and honeyed barley, and if his kitchen-slaves brought to his dish meat that had only two grey fly-maggots upon the bone, straightway he would cause their thumbs to be cut off and thrown to his watch-hounds.

In the fourth month of the great hunger, a company of three thousand ditch-men did gather before the bronze wall-doors, carrying their hollow-cheeked infants and empty grain-baskets, crying: “Give unto us the second-grade rye, O master of spears! For the water in the river-ditch hath turned to yellow rot, and our children chew their own leather wrist-straps from the great burning of their bellies!”

Warlord Bakka-Ur went up upon the parapet-stones, leaning his heavy copper belly against the wall-teeth. He did spit a mouth of bitter betel-nut down upon the hair of an old woman and laughed with a roar like stones tumbling in an empty well. He said: “If the river-ditch hath yellow rot, let the ditch-folk drink their own tears, for my five hundred spearmen must have clean barley and whole lentils, lest their arm-cords become soft like wet flax when the border-riders come!” And he did loose three flights of copper-pointed arrows into the crowd to drive the weeping mothers back into the salt-cracks.

Now there walked among the starving people an elder sister of the Hermetic order of the Foundation-House, whose name upon the broken river-tablets was recorded only as the Weigher of the Scent-Bread. She wore upon her neck neither silver wire nor bead of blue glass, but carried upon her breast by a cord of plaited flax a round cylinder of clear glass, bound top and bottom in sleeves of yellow brass. Inside the glass was a thick oil the color of wild bee-honey, and in the oil did swim four little round seeds of star-silver, each marked with an alchemical tool-sign: the Sign of the White Salt, the Sign of the Yellow Brimstone, the Sign of the Liquid Quicksilver, and the Heavy Lead-Mark of the Earth-Star.

The woman went up to the gate-guards who stood with copper spears at the water-gate, where a great skin-bag of rotten sheep-broth was being drawn forth to be cast into the dry ditch. She held up the yellow glass tube and spoke unto the chief spear-man: “Cast not the sheep-broth into the dirt, for there is life in the marrow if the corruption be drawn out. Let the little silver seed of Salt balance the foul water, and the four hundred babies of the ditch may drink thereof and live until the winter-rain.”

The guards did mock her with their tongues, but their own bowels were water from eating sour grain, so they brought the woman into the tower-kitchen before the cook-pots of Bakka-Ur. The Warlord sat upon his sheep-skin throne, picking his flint teeth with a copper bodkin.

“What is this glass horn?” roared the tyrant. “Is it a drink of spirit-wine, or an oil to rub upon my big knee-joints?”

The sister answered: “It is the vessel of the Angel Gabriel and the foundation-stone of the body-meat. It weigheth the life-breath in the dish. If food hath the black venom of rot, the little lead-seed sinketh to the mud-bottom; but if a drop of the sacred tincture be loosed from its brass spout into the kettle, the venom is made into clean sweet nourishment, so that half a fist of grain shall satisfy a strong warrior from the dawn-rising until the star-peep.”

Warlord Bakka-Ur opened his yellow eyes until they were wide like ditch-frogs. He thought within his greedy heart: “If one drop of this oil maketh foul meat into sweet life, and if half a fist of grain feedeth a spearmen for a whole day-turn, then I shall not give a single grain of my seven mud-silos to the town! I shall keep this glass bottle, feed my five hundred spearmen upon half-rations of ditch-garbage, and sell the grand grain-heaps to the gold-kings of the south for twenty cart-loads of silver bullion!”

He reached out his broad, hairy paw and snatched the glass cylinder from the sister’s flaxen sling. “The glass is the property of the throne-house!” he cried. “For the town-folk are dogs and must eat dirt, but my spearmen shall march upon the mountain-cities with empty pack-mules and full bellies!”

The sister did not wrestle with the tyrant’s spears. She only fixed her two quiet eyes upon his greedy brow and said: “Thou taketh the tube of Yesod with a hand of iron, yet thy heart is an unwashed sewer. The oil will measure thy grain, but it shall measure thy soul with the same scale; and when the silver seed of Salt refuseth to rise, the stone shall not feed the beast.” And having spoken, she walked backwards out through the copper gates, and no spear could lift its point against her mantle, for a thick mist of cool camphor and crushed thyme did fill their nostrils until their hands were heavy like mud.

Now Warlord Bakka-Ur was so puffed up with his new trick that he called for a great feast of testing. He caused the palace cooks to drag forth from the cellar-ditches ten barrels of ancient pork-sides that had turned green like swamp-moss and were full of crawling white ditch-worms.

The Warlord took the glass phial, rotated the brass collar three times until the Hebrew letters did shine with an amber fire, and let fall three drops of the clear topaz oil into the stinking caldron of rotten pork.

At once, a noise went up from the meat like a basket of crickets in dry grass! A sweet cloud of crushed mountain-thyme and hearth-baked bread arose from the pot, and the green slime upon the pork-sides did vanish like snow dropped into an iron hearth-pan! The meat became white, sweet, and firm like the flesh of a young almond.

The Warlord ate of the meat with both hands until grease ran down his beard onto his chest-scales. He felt in his middle-meat a strange and mighty strength; his belly did not groan, his teeth felt like stones, and though he had eaten only two ribs, he felt full as an ox that hath grazed seven days in green clover.

“The magic-glass is the greatest god in all the dirt-lands!” shouted Bakka-Ur. “Lock the great silo-doors with three iron bars! Henceforth, no man, horse, or spear-bearer shall taste of the clean grain! Let the soldiers gather the dead skins, the dried harness-leather, the weed-stalks of the swamp, and the rotting refuse of the horse-stalls! We shall touch them with the oil-drop and feast like kings upon the refuse of the earth!”

For three score days did this madness continue. The Warlord kept the grand granaries sealed with red wax, watching the townspeople drop down dead in the streets until their dry bodies were piled up like firewood against the city-gates. Meanwhile, he and his five hundred guards lived upon boiled mud-weeds, old horse-bones, and scrapings of tanned hides, touching each kettle with a single amber drop from the vessel.

Yet the Warlord did not understand the law of the Foundation-House. The oil doth make the foul thing clean, but the soul of him who useth the scale must remain true to the balance of the salt-current.

On the sixty-first night, the Warlord went into his kitchen-vault to touch a basket of moldy river-scum for his midnight breakfast. But when he held the brass nozzle over the kettle and whispered the name of the white Angel, the amber oil within the glass tube did turn black like ditch-ink!

The four silver beads did not float upon their gentle river; they did leap and fight against each other with a sharp clattering noise, like iron teeth snapping in a trap! The bead of Lead did drop to the bottom like a plummet of mountain-iron, while the bead of White Salt did jump against the brass cap, refusing to touch the oil. The clear drop that fell from the nozzle was no longer honey-gold; it was an oily, bitter grease that smelled of wet tomb-cloth and crushed scorpions.

The drop struck the pot of river-scum. The pot did not turn to sweet bread; it burst into a greasy black flame that threw off a smoke like boiled vinegar and sheep-bile!

Warlord Bakka-Ur roared with rage, thinking that his slaves had poured well-water into the vessel. He took the phial by its brass bands and shook it with his iron fists, beating it against his copper table-plank. “Work, thou little glass dog!” he shouted. “Make my food fat, or I shall cast thee into the iron forge!”

He seized a dry strip of boiled ox-shield—the tough leather of his own battle-shield that had hung in his armory for seven rains—and held the phial over it, forcing three black droplets onto the dried hide. Then, in his stubborn pride and animal anger, he thrust the unblessed, charred leather into his own mouth and swallowed it whole.

At that moment, the true curse of the abused scale did fall upon the master of Kadur.

The alchemical oil within his guts did not digest; it did expand with the fury of an angry furnace! The ascetic metabolism that had kept his strength without food was reversed by the wrath of the leaden star. A terrible, hollow void opened within his stomach—a hunger so monstrous and shrieking that the Warlord began to howl like a pack of wolves trapped in a burning brake!

His guts did feel as if thirty iron harrow-teeth were turning inside his skin. He ran to the pantry to eat the clean flour, but the grand silo-doors were sealed with his own three iron bars, and the keys had been dropped into his deep well that very morning so that none of his guards could steal his wealth.

“Bread!” wailed the tyrant, clawing at his own belly until the copper scales of his armor tore loose. “Bring me the bread of the widows! Bring me the sour river-water!”

None of his guards could come to him, for they too had eaten of the altered scum and lay upon their barracks-rugs with their limbs bent double, their muscles rigid like dried cedar-poles from the lead-poisoning of their own greed.

Warlord Bakka-Ur ran shrieking through his treasure-vaults. His hunger was a white-hot coal that consumed his wits. Finding no grain, he fell upon his own leather saddle-cloths and chewed them like a wild hog. He chewed the rawhide cords of his battle-bows; he chewed his sandals, his oil-soaked tent-flaps, and the dried parchment-scrolls of his tax-rolls.

Yet the hunger grew larger with every mouthful! The glass phial, which he had tied to his wrist with an iron chain, began to hum with a high, weeping sound, the silver beads spinning round and round like water in a drain.

At the midnight hour, the madness of the famine-belly broke his skull. Warlord Bakka-Ur took his own great battle-shield of layered ox-hide and bronze studs. He broke the rim with his stone mallet, and kneeling upon the cold diorite flags in the dark, he began to tear the boiled leather with his flint-teeth, swallowing the raw brass nails, the moldy hides, and the dried sinew-strings of his own war-gear, weeping and screaming as each mouthful tore his throat-meat like broken glass.

When the red dawn broke over the Valley of Kadur, the sister of the Foundation-House returned through the open, undefended water-gate, followed by the starving townspeople with their carts.

They found Warlord Bakka-Ur lying dead upon the threshold of his kitchen-chamber. His belly had burst open like a dry water-bladder, full of bronze studs, chewed shield-leather, and copper nail-heads.

Sitting beside his cold, stiff hand was the glass phial of sustenance. The black ink-color had vanished from the oil; the liquid was once more clear and golden like wild hill-honey, and the four silver beads floated at rest upon their proper water-lines, humming with a soft, peaceful breath like a mother rocking a cradle.

The sister lifted the glass tube by its plaited flax-cord, touched its brass nozzle to the lock-pins of the grand silo-doors, and with three golden droplets dissolved the iron bars into red rust. The great doors swung wide, and twelve thousand bushels of sweet golden wheat poured out upon the starving people, who wept with joy and washed their faces in the clean flour.

Moral of the Story: He who turneth the vessel of divine nourishment into an engine of hoarding and greed, feeding the world upon refuse while locking the grain in his pride, shall find that his own hunger will become an unquenchable pit that devoureth his own weapons, his house, and his life.

Alchemical Phial of Sustenance Wondrous Item, Common (Requires Attunement)

  • Description: A cylindrical vial of hand-blown leaded glass bound in engraved yellow brass collars bearing the seals of Yesod and the planetary signs of the Moon and Mercury. Within its sealed core floats an amber oil suspension holding four engraved silver beads representing Salt, Sulfur, Mercury, and Lead.
  • Humoral Trophic Readout (Passive): While held in hand or worn openly on a belt or cord, you instinctively know whether any food, ration, or beverage within 5 feet is spoiled, contaminated with biological parasites, poisoned, or chemically adulterated.
  • Ascetic Metabolism (Passive): Consuming meals or water analyzed and verified by the phial optimizes your digestion; you require only half the normal amount of food and water each day to avoid exhaustion or dehydration.
  • Assay Nutritive Matrix: As an action, you hover the phial over a dish or dip its base into a beverage while reciting the vibration of Gabriel. The four silver beads align along the internal graduated scale, revealing whether the sustenance contains mundane or magical toxins and identifying its primary nutritional and humoral composition.
  • Tincture of Purified Vitality: As an action, you rotate the top brass collar to dispense a single alchemical droplet into up to 1 gallon of foul or contaminated liquid, or up to 5 pounds of spoiled or poisoned food. The droplet immediately purifies the sustenance, neutralizing mundane poisons, destroying pathogens, and rendering the sustenance wholesome and nourishing.
