Commerce and Distribution of the Hermetic Aperture

  • Apothecary Guildhalls and Chirurgeon Ateliers: Nestled within the paved academic quarters and hospital quadrangles of major port cities, these sterile, aromatic workshops smell of dried sage, alcohol tinctures, and camphor wax. Glass cases house surgical scalpels, brass bone-saws, and polished quartz diagnostic glasses. When an adventuring medic or field alchemist seeks to acquire the Hermetic Aperture to evaluate battlefield maladies, the resident master apothecary charges a standard retail price of 12 silver pieces logged into the World Bank ledger. If an avatar brings in a recovered monocle in fine condition, the guild tester inspects the smoky quartz micro-grid against a prism lantern; a Tier 1 practitioner receives a clean payout of 10 silver pieces credited directly to their personal account. Initiates holding certified membership in the Physician’s Collegium receive an institutional discount, purchasing the diagnostic lens for 10 silver and 8 copper pieces.
  • Hermetic Lodge Stores and Esoteric Instrument Makers: Located behind heavy oak doors in lodge chapterhouses and astrological observatories, these quiet, candlelit repositories cater to scholars of the Golden Dawn and Hermetic students ascending the spheres of the Tree of Life. Monocles are displayed on black velvet trays alongside armillary spheres and inscribed scrying mirrors. Lodge proctors inspect offered pieces for alignment with the sphere of Hod, offering an initiate 11 silver pieces through the World Bank registry for a genuine relic. Unaffiliated seekers wishing to buy an aperture as an academic curio or diagnostic tool are charged a premium rate of 14 silver pieces, whereas sworn lodge initiates can buy it at the subsidized fraternity price of 11 silver and 5 copper pieces.
  • Frontier Field Hospitals and Expedition Dispensaries: Set inside reinforced canvas pavilions or timber wardrooms adjacent to quarantine zones, blighted wildernesses, and active dig operations, these gritty facilities treat necrotic wounds, parasitic infections, and foreign blights. The quartermaster trades strictly in vital medical survival gear. A field medic with a surplus aperture can sell it to the dispensary for 9 silver pieces routed via standard bank exchange, as the clinic constantly needs lenses to triage poisoned miners and scouts. When an expedition team purchases the monocle to identify unseen contagions in the wild, the strained supply lines push the acquisition cost to 13 silver pieces.
  • Curio Exchanges and Antiquarian Pawns: Situated in crowded merchant arcades and waterfront alleys, these cluttered emporiums feature shelves crammed with mismatched estate goods, uncataloged lenses, and traveler gear. The pawnbroker examines the monocle with a crude jeweler’s loupe, testing the brass frame for warpage. Delvers offloading an aperture here receive a low-margin trade-in value of 8 silver pieces transferred to their bank slip. Prospective buyers spotting the smoky quartz glass among the trays can purchase it for a firm shelf price of 12 silver pieces, with the merchant refusing haggling unless the customer holds an active commercial permit.
  • Shadow Clinics and Black Market Fences: Hidden inside abandoned cellars, back-alley mortuaries, and illicit fighting rings beneath city streets, these clandestine dens specialize in treating unregistered wounds, street-gang poisons, and occult curses away from the city watch. In these dens, diagnostic gear that identifies rare toxins without calling city registrars commands high utility. A rogue operative selling a clean aperture directly to an illicit back-alley doctor bypasses the World Bank entirely, receiving 18 silver pieces in untraceable, hand-to-hand silver coin. An unlicensed chirurgeon looking to purchase the lens under the table must pay a steep black-market rate of 22 silver pieces in raw coin to ensure total anonymity.

Tactical and Environmental Applications of the Hermetic Aperture

  • Quarantine Wards and Plague-Struck Settlements: Amid damp infirmary tents and walled isolation districts where pestilence spreads unseen, physical and metaphysical triage is vital to survival. Defensively, an avatar seats the monocle over their dominant eye while screening inbound refugees. Through the lens’s Aura Readout, the medic spots the dull, sickly chartreuse stain of latent spore-plague clinging to a seemingly asymptomatic traveler’s respiratory tracts, isolating them before the pathogen contaminates the healthy population. Offensively, when clearing an abandoned hospice held by rogue plague cultists who coat their blades in virulent marrow-rot, the user executes Diagnose Malady across the skirmish line; by identifying the exact toxic compound dripping from the enemies’ daggers, the party alchemist instantly tosses neutralizing alkali powders across the frontline, nullifying the lethal venom on contact and allowing the party’s shock troops to counterattack without fear of lethal contagion.
  • Blighted Swamplands and Toxic Fens: In mist-choked marshes where stagnant waters harbor blood parasites and venomous serpents lurk beneath the murk, biological hazards are omnipresent. Defensively, the point scout sweeps the murky surface through the smoky quartz lens; the aperture’s Humoral Resonance identifies a severe phlegmatic excess in a wounded ally’s calf, revealing a hidden, parasitic fen-leech buried deep beneath the flesh before its paralytic secretion enters the bloodstream. Offensively, when ambushed by an armored mire-beast, the user engages the aperture to locate physiological weak spots. Spotting an inflamed, choleric heat signature pulsing behind the beast’s jawline—indicating a swollen, rupture-prone poison sac—the user directs the party’s ranged marksman to target that exact coordinate, detonating the gland internally and slaying the monster with its own venom.
  • Occult Courts and Aristocratic Salons: Behind silk tapestries and gilded arches where courtiers trade whispered pleasantries, weapons take the form of slow court poisons and subtle, insidious curses. For defensive roleplay during an opulent state banquet, the avatar inspects the wine goblets and roasted meats through the brass eyepiece; the Aura Readout reveals a faint, oily violet sheen floating over the sovereign’s goblet, exposing an imperceptible distillation of nightshade before a single sip is taken. Offensively, during a tense public hearing against a rival noble suspected of demonic manipulation, the user rotates the brass ring to trigger Scan Etheric Fracture. The lens projects the glowing sigil of a foreign astral parasite burrowing into the magistrate’s neck; by boldly naming the possessing entity and the specific ritual element required to purge it, the party shatters the rival’s political facade and forces the creature into the open.
  • Subterranean Vaults and Ancient Ossuaries: Within sunless catacombs infested with crypt-ghouls, wights, and lingering spirit miasmas, standard mundane senses fail against supernatural ailments. Defensively, when a vanguard fighter collapses after being struck by an undead shadow, the medic kneels and aligns the lens’s crosshairs. The Aura Readout instantly diagnoses whether the condition is physical muscle fatigue or an etheric life-drain rot, allowing the medic to administer an invigorating solar tincture rather than wasting mundane bandages. Offensively, when confronting a spectral banshee or vengeful shade anchored to the stone, the user utilizes Scan Etheric Fracture to trace the phantom’s astral tether back to a desecrated bone reliquary embedded in the chamber floor. Shouting the coordinates to the party vanguard, the team smashes the anchor vessel, instantly collapsing the entity’s manifestation and ending the encounter without prolonged attrition.
  • Industrial Alchemical Foundries and Smog-Choked Factories: Inside dense machining districts and alchemical refineries where boiler pipes leak toxic vapors and chemical runoff pools in gutters, environmental poisoning is a constant hazard. Defensively, the operative wears the monocle while navigating narrow catwalks shrouded in steam, using Humoral Resonance to detect invisible, suffocating carbon plumes and caustic acid mists drifting from cracked valves, warning the squad to don respirators before entering lethal corridors. Offensively, during an assault on an illegal narcotics laboratory guarded by chemically altered bruisers, the user scans the enforcers’ auras to isolate the synthetic combat stimulants surging through their cardiovascular systems. Realizing the compounds create an explosive sanguine imbalance vulnerable to sudden shock, the user orders a barrage of thunderstones, inducing immediate cardiac overload in the brutes and incapacitating the security detail swiftly.

Perception of Activation:

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective: As the ceremonial invocation of Hod is whispered, the engraved Hebrew characters along the brass bezel ignite with a steady, incandescent amber luminescence. Looking through the smoky quartz lens, the user’s normal vision splits: the physical world remains visible, overlaid by three glowing concentric rings and a sharp crosshair grid. Living targets within field of view manifest luminous, pulsing auras; localized blights, infections, and poisons show up as curdled, muddy discolorations swirling against the natural light, while etheric wounds appear as jagged, violet lacerations across the luminous outline of the flesh.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers see the tarnished brass rim of the monocle flare with a sharp, warm candlelight glow. A faint projection of miniature amber geometric circles casts outward from the lens onto the face or body of the subject being examined, illuminating dust motes in the immediate air like golden sparks.
    • Positives: Grants precise visual diagnostic clarity, pinpointing the depth, exact physical origin, and biological boundaries of infections, internal hemorrhaging, and foreign toxins without invasive surgery.
    • Negatives: The amber glare illuminates the user’s face in dark environments, and prolonged staring through the high-contrast metaphysical grid induces pupil dilation and temporary light sensitivity in the viewing eye.
  • Hearing:
    • User’s Perspective: A high-frequency, glass-like chime rings directly within the user’s auditory canal, akin to wet fingers circling the rim of a crystal goblet. As the crosshairs center over an infected organ or parasitic cluster, the pitch tightens into a rhythmic, fluttering trill that mirrors the abnormal pulse of the ailment.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Companions within arm’s reach hear a soft, metallic ticking or faint hum, like the internal escapement of a pocket watch winding down.
    • Positives: Delivers direct acoustic feedback that helps the diagnostician triangulate internal blockages or hidden heart irregularities even if visual lines are partially obstructed by heavy clothing or bandages.
    • Negatives: The persistent crystalline ringing drowns out quiet background noises and hushed whispers in the surrounding room, making the user temporarily oblivious to subtle stealth approaches.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective: A crisp, clinical fragrance of evaporated alcohol, crushed juniper berries, and dry camphor washes through the user’s nasal passages the moment the circuit closes, cutting through local environmental air.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Nearby individuals catch a faint, brief draft of clean surgical spirits and medicinal resin wafting from the heated brass bezel.
    • Positives: Clears and numbs the user’s olfactory senses, allowing them to examine rotting, gangrenous wounds or noxious plague victims without gagging or suffering nausea.
    • Negatives: The sharp medicinal scent can make wild animals or skittish patients uneasy, signaling an unnatural or clinical presence.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective: A sterile, cool sensation spreads across the tongue and roof of the mouth, tasting of crushed chalk, zinc shavings, and menthol, accompanied by a slight numbing of the lips.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers experience no direct taste phenomena, though they may see the diagnostician instinctively press their tongue against their teeth or smack dry lips.
    • Positives: Acts as an unmistakable sensory baseline, confirming that the alchemical glass has properly insulated the practitioner against inhaling airborne spores or volatile toxins during close-proximity examination.
    • Negatives: The lingering zinc-and-chalk taste dulls normal taste perception for several minutes, rendering food and drink flavorless immediately following an intensive triage session.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective: The brass casing against the orbital bone transitions from cold metal to a soothing, body-temperature warmth. A faint, prickling galvanic current buzzes gently around the eye socket, feeling like tiny static sparks that anchor the monocle securely to the skin without requiring hand support.
    • Observer’s Perspective: An observer touching the user’s shoulder feels a mild static charge, while the skin directly surrounding the user’s eye socket shows a faint, harmless flush.
    • Positives: The light static cling ensures the eyepiece stays firmly attached to the face even while the healer bends, leans, or moves rapidly over a struggling patient.
    • Negatives: After removing the monocle, the skin around the eye remains tender, slightly reddened, and numb for several minutes.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Mind’s Eye Etheric Mapping:
      • User’s Perspective: Through the Mind’s Eye, the target’s physical body becomes semi-translucent, revealing the etheric blueprint that sustains physical cellular growth. Disruptions caused by curses, astral parasites, or spiritual rot manifest as dark, tangled knots pulling at the luminous matrix. The user intuitively perceives the exact flow of life-force and can see where the spiritual energy is leaking or dammed up by malignant magic.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Other avatars actively observing through their own Mind’s Eye see the faint outline of the Tree of Life’s Hod pathway briefly superimpose over the target, illuminating the energetic channels like glowing gold threads.
      • Positives: Accurately differentiates between mundane biological sickness and supernatural afflictions, preventing wasted medicinal resources on conditions that require ritual cleansing.
      • Negatives: Witnessing the direct twisting or corruption of another being’s etheric body causes mental revulsion, occasionally inflicting a lingering spiritual gloom on the practitioner.
    • Humoral Pressure Resonance:
      • User’s Perspective: The user develops a temporary empathetic awareness of the patient’s internal balance, sensing the heavy, leaden drag of excess Melancholia, the boiling heat of Choler, the stagnant chill of Phlegm, or the frantic pounding pressure of Sanguine fluids as if registered on an internal spiritual barometer.
      • Observer’s Perspective: Attuned empaths or psychics in the vicinity sense an abrupt focal shift in the room’s emotional climate as biological distress is analyzed and quantified.
      • Positives: Informs the user of the patient’s constitutional resilience, indicating precisely how much stress or alchemical toxicity the patient’s system can withstand before failing.
      • Negatives: Siphoning a reflective impression of systemic bodily trauma can cause the user to experience phantom aches or sudden emotional swings mirroring the subject’s condition.

Hermetic Aperture Fabrication Recipe

  • Materials Needed:
    • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (coin-sized and coin-weighted, harvested from a slain magical creature).
    • One flawless nodule of smoky quartz (free of internal fractures or heavy clouding).
    • Two small ingots of alchemical yellow brass (refined copper-zinc alloy).
    • One measure of fine diamond lapping paste and cerium oxide powder.
    • Three drops of purified quicksilver solvent.
    • One length of thin gold wire (drawn fine for runic inlay).
    • One dram of clear optical-grade pine resin.
  • Tools Required:
    • One jeweler’s precision lathe and cutting spindle.
    • One concave cast-iron lapidary grinding dish.
    • One set of diamond-point engraving burrs.
    • One miniature blowpipe and alcohol spirit lamp.
    • One set of brass calipers and non-marring lens tweezers.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Lapidary: Rank 3 or higher.
    • Metalworking: Rank 2 or higher.
    • Esoteric Runecraft: Rank 2 or higher.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Cast the brass ingots into a circular bezel ring sized to fit the human orbital bone, turning the outer rim upon the jeweler’s lathe to achieve a smooth, uniform wall thickness and a recessed interior lens groove.
    • Using the fine diamond-point burrs, inscribe the Hebrew letterings and planetary seals corresponding to the sphere of Mercury (Hod) around the exterior perimeter of the brass frame.
    • Saw the raw smoky quartz nodule into a thin circular blank, securing it to a dop stick with heated pitch.
    • Grind the quartz blank against the concave lapidary dish using coarse silicon carbide grit until a shallow, corrective convex curvature is achieved on both faces.
    • Polish both faces of the quartz disc with cerium oxide on a felt wheel until completely transparent and free of surface scratches.
    • Mount the polished lens onto an indexing table; using a hair-fine diamond scriber, engrave three concentric alignment circles and quarter them with a micro-grid crosshair across the inner face.
    • Pulverize the Tier 1 Magic Crystal into an impalpable flour within an agate mortar, mixing the fine powder with three drops of quicksilver solvent to create an alchemical slurry.
    • Rub the glowing slurry into the micro-engraved crosshair lines on the quartz lens, wiping away all excess with pure alcohol so that only the recessed incisions retain the luminous suspension.
    • Seat the quartz lens into the interior groove of the brass bezel, securing the rim with a bead of clear optical resin.
    • Warm the assembled eyepiece over the spirit lamp while chanting the ceremonial Lesser Banishing vibration of Hod for seven minutes, permanently anchoring the etheric alignment between the quartz grid and the brass housing.

Smoky Eye-Wheel and King Whose Liver Became Black Water

In the ancient turning-cycle of the great dirt plains, when the sky-fire was yet small and the yellow star-cloud VaporSphere did look like an unwashed pot of sheep-grease upon the night-horizon, there reigned over the mud-ramparts of ancient Oakhaven an arrogant ruler whose name on the split bricks is Prince-King Mael-Hagg. He was a great eater of sweet dates fried in pig-lard, and he did drink seventy jars of purple hill-wine at every moon-change. In his courtyard were four hundred singing-girls and twelve hundred copper-spears, and his belly was as round and wide as an unbaked water-cistern.

Now it came to pass in the seventh year of his throne-sitting that a strange sickness did enter into the house of the King. His skin, which had been brown and fat like a roasted fowl, did turn the color of wet lime-dust, and his breath did stink like a ditch where dead fish have lain three days in the summer sun. He did groan upon his bed-rugs of mountain-fur, crying: “Fetch to me the knife-men! Fetch the herb-chewers! There is a worm with seven iron teeth gnawing upon the cords of my middle-meat, and if no man taketh out the worm, I shall cut off the noses of all the doctors in the three river-valleys!”

So there came into his hall the master-chirurgeons of the town, carrying bowls of warm goat-blood, bunches of bitter fen-leek, and little curved saws of grey bronze. The first chirurgeon did feel the King’s fat wrist and said: “Behold, O master of the wagons, thy sickness is only a great wind of the Air-House that hath blown down thy throat while thy mouth was open in sleep. We must bore four round holes into thy skull-bone with an iron auger so the bad wind may fly out into the sky.”

The second chirurgeon did shake his head of grey wool and cried: “Nay! His head is sound, but his blood hath turned to salty vinegar! We must open the vein of his great toe and draw forth seven copper pans of dark water, then wrap his belly in cow-dung mixed with boiled river-crabs!”

While the doctors did dispute with high screeching-voices, waving their bone-knives and iron scrapers, there arrived at the palace door an old walker of the Hermetic paths. He had on his body only a ragged mantle of woven camel-hair, and upon his right eye he wore a round loop of beaten alchemical brass. In the center of the loop was held a round pebble of smoky crystal, dark like mountain-ice that hath been smoked in hearth-ash, and across the glass were scratched three round circles and a cross of four legs, while along the brass edge were engraved many crooked marks from the speech of the stars.

The King’s spearmen did hold their copper blades to the wanderer’s breast, but the King shouted from his fur-blanket: “Let the one-eyed beggar come near! If he can pluck the biting worm from my middle-part, he shall have three sacks of white silver; but if he cannot, his head shall sit upon the city-spikes before the sun hath turned to water!”

The wanderer walked softly upon the sheep-skins. He did not unpack clay jars, nor did he bring forth iron saws. He only took the brass loop in his two fingers and turned its outer rim three times, whispering seven words that the ancient clay-scribes wrote down as: “Hod… Thoth… Raphael… let the eye of the mind divide the bone from the marrow.”

At that utterance, the crooked letter-marks upon the brass bezel did burst into a hot amber flame! The smoky quartz glass did shine like a torch of pine-pitch dipped in bee-wax, and out from the lens flew three round rings of yellow light that hung in the air and cast themselves upon the naked stomach of the Prince-King. A smell arose from the glass that was clean and dry, like cold spirits of juniper and crushed camphor, driving away the stink of the royal sick-bed.

The wanderer looked through the smoky glass, and his single eye did grow large and terrible. Through the quartz micro-crosshairs, the fat belly of King Mael-Hagg was no longer hide and muscle; it became clear like ditch-water in a glass bottle. The wanderer saw through the meat into the great red liver of the King.

“Behold,” said the wanderer, speaking through his teeth with a dry whistling sound. “There is no wind in thy skull, nor hath thy toe-blood soured with salt. But thy liver hath become a pool of rotting black water, and upon the neck of thy gall-bladder there sitteth a jagged stone of green lime, big like a pigeon’s egg, which hath stopped the sweet bile from flowing into thy belly-guts. Moreover, there is an evil spiritual worm—a leech of the astral shadow—anchored by three black threads unto thy soul-casing, born from the bitter curses of the poor widow-women whose grain-carts thou didst burn in the month of the Barley-Reap.”

The chirurgeons did laugh with loud braying-mouths like river-donkeys. “The beggar seeth ghosts!” shouted the man of the bone-saw. “How can an eye-glass know what is hidden beneath four fingers of prime royal fat? Let us bring the iron auger and drill his skull!”

“Hold thy noisy tongues,” groaned the King, for he felt the truth of the amber rings burning upon his belly-skin. “What must be done, O maker of the wheel?”

The wanderer did answer: “Thou must take neither the knife nor the dung-plaster. Thou must drink three measures of hot oil pressed from the wild radish-seed to pass the lime-stone from thy water-pipes. And to loose the black leech of the astral shadow, thou must open thy seven mud-granaries and give back twelve hundred baskets of barley to the widow-women without demanding silver, while reciting the prayer of the Lesser Banishing at the rising of the red dawn.”

The King did drink the sharp radish-oil, and within three hours he did weep and roar upon his night-stool, passing forth a terrible lime-stone that was jagged like an iron arrow-point. At once the great pain left his middle-meat, and his breath ceased to stink of dead fish.

Then did the wanderer say: “The stone is out, O King. Now send forth the barley to the poor women, that the black etheric worm may loose its three teeth from thy liver-chords.”

Now Prince-King Mael-Hagg was a ruler whose soul was made of crooked horn. Seeing that the sharp stone was out and his belly no longer pained him, he thought to himself: “Why should I give twelve hundred baskets of good barley to herd-folk and beggars? The dirt-wanderer hath healed me with his toy; I shall keep the barley, and I shall take his magic glass-eye for my own treasure-room!”

He shouted to his captains: “Seize the old beggar! Cut the brass monocle from his face and cast him into the lion-trench, for he is a sorcerer who hath looked upon the royal intestines with insolence!”

The guards ran forward with their copper axes, but the wanderer did not run. He stepped back into the shadow of the door-pillar, took the brass aperture from his orbital bone, and cast it onto the stone floor at the foot of the royal bed-seat, crying out: “Thou hast looked through the glass of truth, yet thou chooseth the darkness of a thief! The glass will stay, but the eye of the spirit cannot be stolen by an unwashed hand!” And with that word, the wanderer did vanish into a cloud of cold camphor-smoke, and the spears of the guards did strike only the empty air.

Prince-King Mael-Hagg laughed with fat pleasure. He reached down his broad hand and lifted the brass monocle from the floor, thrusting the smoky quartz against his own right eye. “Now am I the master of all bodies!” he cried. “I shall look into the bellies of my captains to see if they steal my gold! I shall look into the hearts of my women to see if they love my fatness!”

He turned the outer brass ring with his thumb, seeking to awaken the amber fire.

At that moment, the brass ring did not warm with gentle medicine-heat. It became hot like an iron horseshoe pulled fresh from the charcoal bellows! The alchemical quicksilver packed within the micro-grooves began to hiss and boil with a terrible shrieking steam, smelling of bitter brimstone and melted brass. The brass rim clamped down around the King’s eye-bone like an iron snare, biting deep into his skull with sharp teeth of galvanic lightning!

The King screamed, tearing at his face with both hands, but the monocle would not loose its grip. Through the smoky quartz glass, his eye was forced to behold not the outside world, but his own inward spiritual shape. He did look upon his own etheric body, and he saw that because he had refused to give the barley to the starving widows, the black astral worm had not died; it had grown large like a bloated marsh-adder! Through the glowing crosshairs, he saw the creature winding its greasy coils around his lungs, chewing with thirty red jaws upon his wind-pipes, and laying clusters of black maggot-eggs within his heart-chambers.

The King ran shrieking through the great palace, beating his head against the limestone pillars to break the glass, but the stone was star-quartz and would not shatter; it only rang with a high, crystalline chime that vibrated through the marrow of his teeth, shouting his secret sins into his ear-holes with the noise of brass trumpets. “A thief!” rang the monocle. “A hoarder of bread! A rotten pot of fat!”

For seven days and seven nights did the Prince-King run through the streets of Oakhaven, naked and wailing, showing to all the townspeople the amber rings burning upon his face and the black venom weeping from his orbital bone. None of the chirurgeons could pull the brass from his head, for whenever an iron tool touched the metal, it did throw forth sparks of white lightning that broke the doctor’s fingers.

On the dawn-hour of the eighth day, the King fell headlong into the public pig-sty before the grand granary gates. His tongue was swollen and black like a dried turnip, and his liver did burst within his belly with a soft bubbling noise. As his breath departed into the cold mud, the brass monocle popped loose from his dead eye-socket with a sound like a cork leaving a wine-flask. It fell clean and bright upon a dry cabbage leaf, free of blood and cool as morning frost.

The townspeople broke open the granaries and took the twelve hundred baskets of barley to feed their hungry children, while a young apprentice of the stone-masons picked up the yellow brass eye-piece and wrapped it in a clean linen handkerchief, bearing it away into the quiet hills of the Hermetic lodges.

Moral of the Story: He who uses the diagnostic glass to discover the corruption of his flesh, yet refuses the medicine of justice to heal the rottenness of his soul, shall find that the lens which revealed his malady will become the furnace that consumeth his pride.
