Lore

  • In the bustling coastal settlements and high-altitude terrace citadels of Erlitou, extreme diets of dried sea-salts, coarse stone-ground grains, and hard mineral rations frequently led to debilitating oral decay, cracked dentition, and agonizing root rot among the populace.
  • While traditional battlefield surgeons relied on iron tooth-keys, crude pincers, and boiling oil to excise afflicted teeth, a monastic order of osteo-botanists and somatic healers sought a non-traumatic method to preserve and reconstruct essential dental architecture.
  • Utilizing shed plates of freshwater pearl-oyster nacre, strips of supple stingray skin, and fine electrum wire, the artisans shaped fingertip thimbles and palm bands designed to channel focused micro-currents of restorative Reiki into calcified biological materials.
  • The wraps allow an avatar to project soothing, analgesic vibrations that numb oral nerves, dissolve hardened tartar, sterilize necrotic root canals, and regenerate microscopic hydroxyapatite layers without inflicting pain.
  • Over centuries, roving street dentists, palace embalmers, and forensic inquisitors adopted the wraps not only for clinical hygiene, but to analyze bite wounds, read dietary toxins deposited within calcified tooth enamel, and counter biting beasts in the wilderness.

Description

  • The item consists of two fingerless palm wraps made from pale, grey-green ray skin, fastened with polished bone toggles along the inner wrist.
  • Three articulate, thimble-like caps crafted from iridescent river-mussel mother-of-pearl cover the thumb, index, and middle fingertips, connected back to the wrist band by paper-thin, braided electrum threads.
  • Set into the dorsal base of each wrist is a single, triangular cabochon of smooth ivory harvested from fossilized river-mastodons, acting as the biological resonance anchor.
  • When dormant, the pearl thimbles exhibit a soft opalescent luster, smooth and cool to the touch.
  • Upon activation, the electrum filigree flares with a gentle, moon-white light, releasing a subtle floral aroma of crushed peppermint, distilled clove oil, and cool spring water while the pearl fingertips hum at a quiet, ultrasonic frequency.

Passive Magic

  • Enamel Diagnostic Touch: When the avatar touches a tooth, jawbone, tusk, horn, or bite wound, the Mind’s Eye perceives a glowing calcification map of the specimen, revealing exact age, dietary history, deep microscopic hairline fractures, dormant nerve abscesses, and systemic mineral deficiencies.
  • Analgesic Aura: The avatar’s hands project a constant, localized numbing field within a 6-inch radius, granting advantage on all Medicine or Sleight of Hand checks made to perform dental extractions, oral surgery, or root-canal cleanings without inflicting pain or inducing physical shock in the patient.
  • Calcified Grip: The pearl thimbles generate microscopic bio-adhesion against enamel, bone, ivory, and chitin, granting advantage on checks made to disarm opponents biting the avatar, pry open locked jaws, or climb skeletal surfaces.

Activable Magic

  • Hydroxyapatite Restoration: As an action, the avatar touches a damaged, cracked, or decayed tooth, tusk, horn, or small bone and expends a charge to weave restorative Reiki into the calcified structure. The touch instantly purges all rot, sterilizes necrotic pulp, and causes fresh, durable enamel to knit across the void, restoring 1d4 health points plus the avatar’s Tier 1 die (1d4) to an injured ally or completely repairing up to three broken teeth. This ability has 3 charges and recovers all expended uses daily at Helios sunrise (06:00).
  • Anesthetic Root-Soothe: As an action, the avatar presses an electrum-threaded pearl thimble against the jaw, cheek, or neck of a living creature and channels a targeted wave of nerve-quieting energy. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution save or lose the ability to speak, bite, or utter verbal spell components for 1 minute as their entire oral cavity goes completely numb. The target may repeat the save at the end of each of its turns. This ability shares the 3-charge daily pool with Hydroxyapatite Restoration.
  • Jaw-Wedge Counter: As a reaction triggered when a beast, monster, or adversary attempts a bite attack against the avatar or an adjacent ally, the avatar thrusts an open pearl-tipped hand into the creature’s maw. The attacker must make a DC 12 Dexterity save; on a failure, an instantaneous surge of stiffening calcification freezes the creature’s mandibular joints, causing the bite to miss automatically and rendering the target unable to use bite attacks until the end of its next turn. This ability has 2 charges and recovers 1 charge after a full twenty-two-hour day has passed.

Avatars with recognized guild dispensations or field-medic warrants can purchase a pair for 85 to 110 silver pieces. When selling a set to a barber-surgeon, the shopmaster will test the pearl thimbles for micro-abrasions and verify the electrum wiring by running it across a dry bone needle, offering 65 to 75 silver coins in immediate cash or credit for distilled pain-dampening balms.
  • High-Chamber Apothecaries and Court Dentistry Ateliers Located in the palatial upper terraces and wealthy aristocratic wards, these immaculate ateliers cater to noble courtiers, chamberlains, and merchant princes obsessed with pristine cosmetic smiles and fresh breath. Displayed upon blue-silk cushions beneath blown-glass cloches, the wraps sit among carved ivory tooth-picks, scented mint powders, gold foil sheets, and vials of rare clove oil. Courtiers and elite somatic practitioners can acquire them as premier cosmetic tools for 120 to 160 silver coins (or 12 to 16 gold coins). When liquidating an unblemished pair here, the master apothecary will inspect the mother-of-pearl luster under an oil lamp, paying 85 to 100 silver coins or trading rare tooth-whitening pastes and scented resins of equal value.
  • Mortuary Scriptoria and Forensic Embalming Catacombs Situated beneath civic mausoleums, necropolises, and municipal crypt vaults where city embalmers prepare the deceased and forensic inquisitors examine suspicious remains, these quiet, subterranean offices value precise identification. The wraps hang near autopsy slates, copper measuring calipers, and dental mold trays, utilized to cross-reference tooth wear against municipal ration registries. Inquisitors and forensic investigators can purchase a pair for 95 to 125 silver pieces. When selling a set here, the embalmer will test the ivory cabochon’s grounding resonance against a skull, offering 70 to 80 silver coins in temple scrip, coin, or official imperial transit seals.
  • Beast-Tamer Kennels and Frontier Menagerie Outposts Found on the outskirts of frontier settlements, arena stables, and wild logging encampments where handlers break riding-beasts and pit animals with savage jaws, these rugged dirt-floor yards smell of wet fur, raw meat, and leather. The wraps are stored in coarse burlap sacks inside the tack-room locker among heavy iron muzzles, bite-sticks, and thick horn-grease pots. The master handler sells them as emergency bite-control implements for 70 to 90 silver pieces. When pawning or selling a worn set to a kennelmaster, the buyer will check the flexibility of the stingray leather and pay 50 to 60 silver coins or trade well-trained guard mastiffs and tracking hounds.

Environmental Roleplay: Dental and Calcified Manipulation in Defense and Offense

  • Urban Taverns, Riotous Alleyways, and Coastal Docks In dense, crowded city streets, brawling taprooms, and salt-crusted docks where rough combatants resort to gouging, headbutts, and feral biting, the terrain is intimate and chaotic. Defensively, when cornered in a tavern brawl by a berserk dockhand or intoxicated sailor attempting to bite an exposed ear or forearm, the avatar reacts using Jaw-Wedge Counter. The avatar drives an open, pearl-tipped palm directly against the assailant’s lower jaw; an instantaneous surge of stiffening calcification freezes the temporomandibular joints with a dry, ceramic chime, locking the jaw shut and nullifying the attack while the brawler reels backward in panicked silence. Offensively, during a chaotic scuffle against a gang enforcer shouting orders to thugs or preparing to blow a brass alert whistle, the avatar lunges forward and executes Anesthetic Root-Soothe. Pressing the electrum-threaded index thimble against the enforcer’s mandibular nerve beneath the ear, the avatar sends an ultrasonic numbing frequency into the jaw, immediately deadening the vocal cords, tongue, and lips. The gang leader collapses against the bar, unable to scream, sound the alarm, or bite for a full minute.
  • Wild Arenas, Beast Pits, and Frontier Menageries Inside dirt-floor arenas, kennel pens, and wild logging encampments where avatars face predatory wolves, armored boars, and savage war-hounds, natural fangs and crushing jaws are the primary threat. Defensively, when a trained arena mastiff or feral predator lunges with a snapping maw aimed at a companion’s throat, the avatar activates Jaw-Wedge Counter. Slipping a hand into the creature’s gaping jaw, the pearl caps lock against the creature’s canine teeth through Calcified Grip; the sudden surge of bio-adhesion halts the closing jaws mid-strike, anchoring the beast’s snout harmlessly to the avatar’s palm until handlers can net the thrashing animal. Offensively, during a hunt against a wounded bull-boar with broken, jagged tusks, the avatar utilizes Enamel Diagnostic Touch to spot hidden structural fissures within the beast’s ivory weapons. Darting inside the animal’s guard, the avatar delivers an inverted ki strike against the fractured tusk; rather than mending, the avatar discharges a sharp harmonic pulse that shatters the tusk along its dormant fault line, stripping the beast of its gore attack and leaving it demoralized.
  • Deep Catacombs, Charnel Vaults, and Skeletal Ruins Within subterranean bone-crypts, ancient ossuaries, and forgotten necropolises constructed entirely from mortar-bound human skulls and giant skeletal frames, calcified matter covers every surface. Defensively, when an animated skeletal horror or ossuary construct attempts to crush the avatar beneath bony fists, the avatar engages Calcified Grip. Slapping the pearl thimbles against the construct’s skeletal forearms, the bio-adhesion grips the bone instantly, allowing the avatar to absorb the kinetic shock, redirect the skeletal swing into the stone wall, and gain infallible leverage to climb up the construct’s ribcage to reach safety. Offensively, when investigating ancient sarcophagi or searching for the true identity of a tomb’s occupant, the avatar touches the teeth of a mummified skull using Enamel Diagnostic Touch. The avatar reads the dietary minerals, chronic illnesses, and geographic origin embedded in the enamel rings, bypassing puzzle-locks and uncovering royal lineage without disturbing the fragile remains.
  • High-Court Banquets, Diplomatic Salons, and Noble Palaces Among perfumed silk canopies, banquet tables, and political salons where assassination, ingested poisons, and subtle verbal manipulation reign supreme, violence must be silent and undetectable. Defensively, if a rival dignitary slips a corrosive, tooth-rotting poison or fast-acting neurotoxin into the party’s feast-goblets, the avatar touches the rim of the cup or an affected ally’s lips. Using Hydroxyapatite Restoration, the avatar immediately mends damaged oral tissues, seals eroded tooth enamel, and purges the localized caustic chemical before systemic shock takes hold, masking the assassination attempt from onlookers. Offensively, during a tense diplomatic standoff where a corrupt magistrate or rival ambassador is about to deliver a damning, treasonous accusation before the court, the avatar casually adjusts the official’s collar. Activating Anesthetic Root-Soothe through a gentle touch to the carotid triangle, the electrum filigree numbs the magistrate’s entire oral cavity instantly; the magistrate stammers, drools slightly, and finds themselves completely unable to speak or utter a single syllable, humiliating them in front of the royal assembly and ending the confrontation without drawing a weapon.

Perception of Activation:

  • Visual Perception (The Sense of Sight) Under the user’s perspective, the moment biological focus channels into the wraps, the paper-thin electrum filigree flares with a crisp, moon-white radiance that flows down the back of the hand into the three pearl thimbles. The mother-of-pearl surfaces gleam with shifting opalescent greens, pinks, and golds, while the fossil ivory cabochon at the wrist emits a steady, pearlescent glow. When examining a target’s mouth or bone, the Mind’s Eye superimposes an ethereal, luminescent dental arch of bright white and mint-green light, displaying the structural integrity and subterranean roots of every tooth like an illuminated manuscript. Under the observer’s perspective, onlookers see the practitioner’s grey-green shagreen wraps light up with delicate, spiderweb threads of silver-gold illumination. As the practitioner touches an open mouth or fractured bone, soft emerald beams and pale lunar light shine from the pearl thimbles, casting a clean, sterile glow across the patient’s face while projecting faint geometric halos of tooth profiles above the working fingers. The positive aspect is microscopic diagnostic clarity; hairline enamel fractures, concealed root abscesses, and tartar deposits stand out in brilliant contrast, eliminating guesswork. The negative aspect is sharp, reflective glare; in dark alleys or dim dungeons, the bright opalescent beam acts like a surgeon’s spotlight, ruining the user’s night vision and pinpointing their exact position to lurking hostiles.
  • Auditory Perception (The Sense of Hearing) Under the user’s perspective, activation produces a clean, high-frequency ultrasonic hum that rings softly in the jawbone, resembling the gentle chime of a struck crystal glass or a miniature tuning fork vibrating against bone. As the energy purges necrotic pulp, the user hears a delicate, rhythmic effervescence, like tiny fizzy bubbles dissolving against polished stone. Under the observer’s perspective, bystanders hear a high-pitched, harmonic singing sound, similar to running a wet finger around the rim of a fine wine goblet, accompanied by a faint, wet fizzing when the thimbles contact saliva and tartar. The positive aspect is quiet clinical precision; the ultrasonic frequency operates at a volume far lower than iron tooth-keys or crunching bone pincers, calming panicking patients during surgery. The negative aspect is animal agitation; the high-frequency ultrasonic vibration, while pleasant to humanoid ears, intensely irritates canines, bats, and wild beasts within thirty paces, provoking aggressive barking and snarls.
  • Tactile Perception (The Sense of Touch) Under the user’s perspective, the shagreen backing tightens comfortably across the palm with the pebbled grip of dry ray skin, while the pearl thimbles become extraordinarily smooth, silky, and icy-cool. When contacting teeth or bone, the user feels a profound bio-magnetic adhesion—the calcified surface grips the mother-of-pearl like two polished glass plates wet with water, preventing the fingers from slipping even when drenched in thick saliva or blood. Simultaneously, a soothing, numb coolness spreads into the user’s fingertips, keeping their hands completely steady and free of muscle tremors. Under the observer’s perspective, a patient receiving treatment feels an instantaneous, profound wave of icy numbness surge through their gums and jaw, as though a snowbank were pressed directly against their exposed nerves, erasing throbbing agony in a heartbeat without physical pressure. The positive aspect is absolute slip-proof stability; the user can perform delicate, millimeter-scale nerve extractions or fracture settings without slipping on wet oral tissues. The negative aspect is prolonged fingertip desensitization; sustained channelings leave the user’s thumb, index, and middle fingers partially numb for ten minutes post-activation, hindering fine mechanical tasks like picking complex tumblers or tying thin thread.
  • Olfactory Perception (The Sense of Smell) Under the user’s perspective, the warming electrum circuits release an invigorating, medicinal mist of crushed garden peppermint, sharp distilled clove oil, cold mountain stream water, and antiseptic camphor. The scent instantly overrides any foul breath, necrotic gangrene, or rotting pulp inside the patient’s mouth, filling the user’s nostrils with crisp, clarifying botanical air. Under the observer’s perspective, anyone standing near the operating area smells a sudden, pleasant wash of spiced clove, sweet spearmint, and ozone, entirely masking the repulsive stench of blood, oral rot, and open wounds that typically accompanies barber-surgery. The positive aspect is complete olfactory sanitization; the user and bystanders are spared the nausea and gag reflex caused by inhaling putrid oral decay or necrotic flesh. The negative aspect is unmistakable medicinal lingering; the pungent odor of clove and peppermint clings to the avatar’s hands and clothing for hours, making it impossible to pass unnoticed among tracking predators or suspicious city guards.
  • Gustatory Perception (The Sense of Taste) Under the user’s perspective, channeling the current produces a clean, tingling sensation across the palate, tasting faintly of cold mineral water, sweet wintergreen, and a trace of galvanized zinc. Under the observer’s perspective, a patient undergoing treatment tastes an immediate, icy wave of peppermint candy and sharp, pleasant clove, rapidly replacing the sickening metallic tang of copper, blood, and decaying pus in their mouth. The positive aspect is sensory relief and comfort; the pleasant taste calms distressed patients and eliminates the bitter panic of medical intervention. The negative aspect is temporary loss of flavor; the numbing astringency lingers on the user’s and patient’s tongue, deadening taste buds so that food and drink taste bland and chalky for nearly an hour afterward.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception: Enamel Chrono-Forensics Under the user’s perspective, when touching a skull, tooth, or fossilized tusk, the avatar’s consciousness perceives the calcified layers not as dead bone, but as an open ledger of mineral sedimentation. The user reads dietary intake across decades: dense bands of sea-salt and kelp, chalky lines of stone-ground barley, the telltale chemical scarring of slow arsenic poisoning, or the sudden porous spikes of ancient famines. Under the observer’s perspective, creatures attuned to spiritual or psionic energy see a spectral ring of miniature, floating teeth rotating slowly around the user’s wrists, flashing with pale green and gold hieroglyphic records. The positive aspect is infallible forensic identification; the user can identify unknown corpses, verify royal lineage from centuries-old remains, and detect forged ivory or poisoned rations without physical lab equipment. The negative aspect is sensory trauma transference; touching teeth that suffered catastrophic violent impact or excruciating decay causes an echo of the victim’s final oral agony to briefly jar the user’s psychic focus.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception: Mandibular Seizure (Jaw-Wedge) Under the user’s perspective, when the Jaw-Wedge Counter is triggered against an incoming bite attack, the user perceives the closing jaw as two opposing kinetic levers driven by muscular cables. Slapping the pearl caps into the maw discharges an inverse calcification shockwave; the user feels the target’s temporomandibular joint flash-crystallize, locking like an iron vise jammed with gravel. Under the observer’s perspective, witnesses watch an attacking beast’s jaws snap shut toward the avatar, only to freeze rigid inches away with an audible, resonant ceramic snap; the beast’s eyes widen in bewilderment as its mouth remains locked open or shut, incapable of biting while the user effortlessly sidesteps the blow. The positive aspect is absolute bite neutralization; lethal predatory bites, rabid snapping jaws, and venomous fangs are neutralized instantly without having to butcher the beast or take lethal damage. The negative aspect is target anatomical restriction; the calcifying seizure relies entirely on skeletal and jaw-joint anatomy, rendering it completely useless against amorphous slimes, tentacled horrors, or jawless mechanical automatons.
  • Extra-Sensory Perception: Hydroxyapatite Weaving Under the user’s perspective, engaging Hydroxyapatite Restoration makes the user sense broken enamel and porous bone as shattered crystalline webs crying out for completion. As the electrum conduits pulse, the user psychically draws calcium and fluoride ions from ambient moisture, feeling microscopic lattices snap together like tiny puzzle pieces under the guidance of somatic intent. Under the observer’s perspective, onlookers watch cracked, yellowed, and rotten teeth visibly turn pearlescent white; fissures knit together seamlessly, cavities seal over with thick, lustrous enamel, and broken fangs regrow their sharp tips under a gentle, moon-white shimmer without leaving a scar or seam. The positive aspect is permanent, scarless calcified repair; decayed teeth, broken tusks, and fractured facial bones are restored to peak biological strength in seconds. The negative aspect is resource pool contention; using healing energy to restore broken teeth or mend bone fractures expends charges that could otherwise be used to disable enemy speech or counter incoming predatory bites, forcing the user to balance triage against combat defense.

Crafting Recipe: Forging the Enamel Sovereign’s Bindings

Materials Needed

  • 1 square foot of cured, vegetable-tanned stingray shagreen (pale grey-green, cleared of excess spines).
  • 6 flawless shells of freshwater pearl-oysters (river-mussel nacre), free of inclusions and hairline cracks.
  • 14 feet of high-purity braided electrum wire (50/50 gold and silver alloy), drawn to hair-thin flexibility.
  • 2 triangular cabochons of fossilized river-mastodon ivory (each measuring 1.5 inches along the base).
  • 1 Coin-sized Tier 1 Magic Crystal, finely ground to serve as the calcification resonance catalyst.
  • 4 carved ox-bone toggles and 2 yards of waxed braided sinew thread.
  • 2 fluid ounces of clove-resin varnish (for sealing and insulating electrical-somatic pathways).

Tools Required

  • 1 Leatherworking Swivel Knife and Diamond-Tipped Hole Punch, for tailoring the dense shagreen.
  • 1 Jeweler’s Hand-Drill and Micro-Burr Set, for boring conductive channels through mother-of-pearl.
  • 1 Lapidary Grinding Arbor with Diamond Polishing Paste, for shaping the nacre thimbles and ivory cabochons.
  • 1 Silver-Tipped Soldering Iron and Charcoal Crucible, for fusing fine electrum circuit branches.
  • 1 Agate Mortar and Pestle, used to grind the magic crystal into fine colloidal dust.

Skill Requirements

  • Leathercraft and Hide-Working: Level 5 or higher, necessary to skive, form, and punch stiff stingray shagreen without tearing the grain.
  • Lapidary and Shell-Carving: Level 5 or higher, essential for hollowing and shaping brittle nacre into seamless, wearable fingertip thimbles.
  • Arcane Crafting: Level 6 or higher (Level 5 base plus 1 for the Tier 1 item), required to properly fuse somatic ki channels with calcified mineral conductors.
  • Osteology or Dental Surgery: Level 5 or higher, required to align the sixty-four micro-electrum filaments precisely to the mandibular and radial meridians.

Crafting Steps

  • Shape the Shagreen Shell and Bone Closures
    • Soften the cured stingray shagreen in warm salt-water, then stretch and block it across a hand-mandrel to shape two open-palm, fingerless forearm cuffs.
    • Skive the inner edges to reduce bulk and punch lacing eyelets spaced three millimeters apart along the radial border.
    • Fit two carved bone toggles to each wrist band with waxed sinew thread, ensuring a snug, slip-free closure across the carpal joints.
  • Hollow and Form the Nacre Thimbles
    • Mount the freshwater pearl-oyster shells onto jeweler’s dops, using diamond-grit burrs to carve out six hollow, ergonomic thimbles fitted for the thumb, index, and middle fingers.
    • Grind the exterior faces to an even, iridescent polish while maintaining an interior thickness of exactly two millimeters to resist shearing forces.
    • Bore three micro-apertures around the base rim of each pearl thimble to anchor the incoming electrum circuit nodes.
  • Seat the Mastodon Ivory Anchors
    • Cut recessed triangular beds into the dorsal wrist section of each shagreen wrap.
    • Bed the fossilized river-mastodon ivory cabochons into the recesses using a warm mixture of bone glue and pulverized alum.
    • Drill three pass-through grounding channels through the ivory bases to accept the somatic return pathways.
  • Run the Electrum Circuit Lattice
    • Draw the braided electrum wire along the dorsal face of the shagreen in an intricate, dental-arch motif, splitting into three primary branches that travel up the thumb, index, and middle digits.
    • Solder the filament ends directly to the micro-apertures in the pearl thimbles using low-heat silver solder.
    • Route the opposing ends into the triangular ivory cabochons, creating a closed-loop grounding circuit that connects back to the inner wrist toggle.
  • Catalyst Infusion and Harmonic Attunement
    • Pulverize the coin-sized Tier 1 magic crystal into ultra-fine crystalline powder using the agate mortar and pestle.
    • Mix the powder into the clove-resin varnish to produce a pale, translucent, conductive glaze.
    • Paint the paste generously over every exposed electrum thread, inside the nacre thimbles, and across the seams of the ivory cabochons.
    • Don the uncured wraps and press the pearl fingertips against a clean calcified surface (such as a skull, tusk, or shed antler) while meditating on restorative somatic ki.
    • Roll a d20 to finalize the calcification bond: a roll of 2 through 20 permanently attunes the wraps, whereas a roll of 1 triggers a galvanic calcification spike that shatters the pearl thimbles and burns out the electrum wire.
  • Final Assembly and Polishing
    • Apply a final protective coat of clove-oil varnish across the shagreen backing to seal out sweat, blood, and saliva.
    • Burnish the inner leather edges until smooth to avoid wrist chafing.
    • Let the completed wraps cure in a cool, shaded workspace for twenty-four hours before field deployment.

Iron Pincers, King’s Black Fang, and Washer of River-Pebbles

Read with two eyes what was scraped upon the flat horn of a dry ox by the water-scribe who sat behind the palace malt-house, long before the salt broke the high wall and before the moon turned red like a sheep’s liver.

In those many seasons, the high city of Erlitou had a very fat King named Lord Bull-Jaw, because when he sat upon his copper chair he would eat nine roast ducks stuffed with dried beach-plums, and he would crack the leg-bones between his great grinders like a hog cracking dry river-beans. His mouth was full of great white stones, as wide as thumb-nails, and he gave three copper tokens to any singer who made a hymn saying that the King’s smile was like the sun breaking over a field of white garlic.

In the King’s shadow walked the Grand Iron-Pincer, whose name was Master Skull-Cleaver. He had a leather coat as stiff as a wagon-wheel, stained black with old blood and the sour fat of oxen. He carried nine iron hooks, three copper hammers, and a long pincers of cast bronze that had two teeth like an angry river-crab. When an elder of the city had a black rot in his head, Master Skull-Cleaver would have four smiths sit upon the man’s legs, and he would clamp the bronze crab upon the tooth and pull until the head cracked or the root tore out of the cheek, while the victim screamed like a pig in a mud-ditch. For this, Master Skull-Cleaver was paid in pots of pork-fat and salt fish, and he said to all the folk of the terrace: “Pain is the daughter of the bone! If the tooth will not bend to the iron, split the jaw with a sledge, for the flesh is only mud!”

Down by the mud-flat where the washer-women beat sheep-pelts lived a youth named The Finger-Who-Licks-Shells. His father had died in the lead-mines and his mother had only one eye from the smoke of the fish-pits. The youth had no iron tongs and no copper needles. He had only two gloves that an old hermit had made from the belly-hide of an ancient sea-ray that had washed ashore during the Great Cloud-Burst. Upon the wrists were two sharp triangles of old ivory that had been dug from the cold silt where the long-nosed hairy river-beasts sleep. Upon three of his fingers he wore three white cups carved from the thick shells of river-mussels that feed upon cold limestone water, and between the cups and the wrist-stones ran many fine hairs of pale electrum wire, twisted like the entrails of a water-snake.

When the old washer-women had worms in their gums that made them weep over the washing-stones, The Finger-Who-Licks-Shells would sit beside them. He did not bring hammers or fire-tongs. He only stroked their cheeks with the three white mussel-cups. From the electrum hairs came a pale, cool light like the water in a deep stone well, and the smell of bruised mint-leaves and mountain clove would blow across the sheep-wash. The old women would shut their eyes and say: “My mouth has become like a cold river-pebble in winter; the worm has gone to sleep and the hammer inside my cheek has stopped its pounding.” Then the youth would touch the black spot upon the tooth, and with a soft singing through his teeth—Hu-ma-ri-yo-ka-na—the black crust would fall away like dry bird-droppings, leaving the bone underneath as white and clean as the belly of a perch.

Now it came to pass that the great feast of the Summer Solstice arrived, when Helios stayed high in the sky like an unblinking copper pot. King Bull-Jaw sat upon his cedar seat and chewed a roast pig’s head that had been rolled in coarse rock-salt and dried mountain berries. He bit into the ear-bone with a mighty crunch.

Suddenly the King gave a terrible roarThe Tablet of Three Clay-Bricks Concerning the Sky-Shard That Cuts Bread and Kings

In days when rivers ran sideways and cattle spoke only on Thursdays, there was none. Then came the smith-man whose naming-sound is like sheep coughing, called here Hur-Gash-of-the-Hollow-Elbow. He sat upon a stone which was also his grandfather, according to the old law of foot-resting.

Now, the mountain called Great Belly Which Does Not Sleep sneezed forth a black tooth. It was not stone, nor was it meat, nor was it dung of beetles. It smelled of thunder after rain has finished hating the grass. Hur-Gash went to the place with two sandals on one foot and none upon the second, as was required when seeking things dropped by cloud-chiefs. He seized the black tooth with pincers made of dead goat horns, saying: “Behold, the thing which is cold though fire lives within its liver.”

Hur-Gash carried the tooth into the hole-where-hammers-sing. For seventy days and three onions he beat upon the metal-that-is-not-metal. He used heavy stones, light pebbles, and the knuckles of an uncle who was untruthful about barley. The object would not become a dish. It would not become an anklet for women. It would not become a hook to fish out the drowned. It said nothing, but its shape grew long, like a reed, yet sharp upon both sides like the gossip of two sisters.

When it was cooled in the fat of three blind pigs, it was long as three forearms and gray like winter water. It had an eye where the hand grasps it, and in that eye Hur-Gash placed a tooth from a sea-lizard.

Then came the king of that place, whose name was He-Who-Eats-Grease-Rapidly. The king possessed nine hats made of feathers and thirty wives who had never seen the moon. He said unto the smith-man:

“What is this long tooth you hold? Give it unto my face, or my servants will throw you into the ditch of many ticks.”

Hur-Gash gave the thing. He said: “Lord of Grease, do not cut cheese with it, for it remembers the lightning.”

The king laughed with four mouths (the meaning here is perhaps that three courtiers laughed behind his shoulders, though the text says mouths). He marched with fifty thousand men who had painted their elbows red for courage. They went to the land of the People-Who-Walk-Upon-Heels, seeking their small yellow sheep.

When the army met the other army upon the field of dried turnips, the king drew the long tooth from its cloth of wool. The tooth screamed. It did not sing as copper sings, nor did it dull its lip like bronze upon ox-hide. Where the king moved his hand, eight heads departed their shoulders without taking leave. The earth drank until its belly was hard. The enemies threw down their sticks and became dust.

The king said: “I am greater than my mother’s brother! I will keep this iron-fang forever inside my sleeping-rug.”

Yet the shard of sky was hungry. In the dark hour when frogs cease barking, the tooth spoke into the ear of the king’s cousin, a small-faced man named He-Who-Squints-at-Lentils. It said: “Your head would sit very tall upon the feather-cushion.”

Therefore, Lentils took a pot of broth, put sleep-grass inside it, and gave it to the king. When the king was heavy like a wet sack of flour, Lentils took the long tooth and pressed it into the throat of his elder brother’s boy. But the tooth was slippery. It leaped through the throat and also through the wall of the reed-house and also pierced the foot of a cow outside.

Lentils became ruler for two weeks. He wore the feathers, but his skin began to turn blue, like meat left in salt too long. The long tooth would not allow him to lay down his hands. When he ate porridge, the tooth cut the bowl. When he embraced his mother, the tooth severed her ear-string.

The people said: “This ruler is too prickly.”

So the priests of the Nine-Tail-Star came with bronze buckets. They poured sour beer over Lentils until he fell down into the mud-vat. Then they took the long sky-tooth and carried it to the deep bog where no duck swims, because the water there is thick like cold marrow.

They spoke seven curses upon the mud. They said: “Stay here, son of the black sky, until the sun breaks his leg.”

They shoved the tooth into the belly of the water. Yet where it entered, the mud did not swallow it; instead, a white arm of water arose, holding the tooth upward, shaking it thrice, and then the swamp folded its lips and became quiet as a roasted fish.

The smith-man Hur-Gash died of old lungs. The king died of holes in his neck. The cousin died of cold skin. The bog dried into salt. But travelers who pass the mound when the moon is like a bent fingernail report hearing a noise beneath the dirt, like a very large dog chewing a small iron bell, waiting for a man foolish enough to seek an edge that does not dull.

The Teaching Found at the Tail of the Shard:

He who borrows a tooth from the sky to bite his neighbor will find that his own mouth is chewed by the morning, for a tool born of fire will not sleep quietly in a house made of grass.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

The Mandibular Relic of the Pearl Sovereign

  • Classification: Minor Enchanted Artifact / Somatic Healing Focus
  • Form: Cured grey-green ray-skin handwraps fitted with three river-mussel mother-of-pearl fingertip thimbles, braided electrum filigree, and a fossil mastodon ivory wrist cabochon.
  • Sanity Cost: 0 Sanity to don; 1 Sanity point if using Enamel Diagnostic Touch on remains affected by mythos-tainted biological corruption or violent facial trauma.
  • Enamel Diagnostic Touch: The user places a pearl thimble upon a tooth, jawbone, skull, or bite wound and spends 1 Magic Point. Roll Medicine, Science (Forensics), or Science (Biology). On a Regular success, the investigator determines the subject’s exact age, historical dietary profile, and systemic mineral toxins, and detects hidden hairline fractures or root abscesses.
  • Analgesic Aura: The wearer projects a localized numbing field within 6 inches of the hands, granting one bonus die on all First Aid or Medicine rolls made to perform oral surgery, suture facial wounds, or extract decayed teeth without causing shock or physical pain.
  • Hydroxyapatite Restoration: The user expends 3 Magic Points and touches a damaged living ally, broken tooth, or cracked bone while rolling First Aid or Medicine. On a success, the target regains 1D4+1 Hit Points, and up to three broken teeth or cracked facial bones knit seamlessly with fresh enamel.
  • Anesthetic Root-Soothe: The user touches an adversary’s cheek or jaw and spends 2 Magic Points. The target must succeed on a CON roll or have their mouth and vocal cords completely numbed for 1D6 combat rounds, rendering them unable to bite, speak, or chant verbal incantations.
  • Jaw-Wedge Counter: As an immediate reaction when targeted by a bite attack from an animal, ghoul, or creature with a physical jaw, the user spends 2 Magic Points and rolls Fighting (Brawl) against the incoming attack. On a success, the bite is parried, and the creature’s mandibular joints freeze rigid; the target must succeed on an Extreme STR roll or be unable to make bite attacks for 1D4 rounds.
  • Fumble Hazard: Rolling a fumble (96–100) causes an electrum feedback surge, rendering the user’s thumb and forefingers stiff, numb, and clumsy (disadvantage/penalty die to DEX and manual skills for 1 hour).

Blades in the Dark

The Pearl-Capped Sovereign Wraps

  • Item Classification: Arcane Implement / Chirurgeon’s Gear (Load: 1, worn wrist wraps and fingertip caps)
  • Visual Profile: Pale shagreen leather bands holding three iridescent river-pearl thimbles, connected by braided electrum filaments to an ivory wrist stud.
  • Quality Level: Tier I Quality (Fine Physician / Infiltration Implement)
  • System Rules:
    • Enamel Diagnosis & Forensics: Spend 1 Stress and touch a tooth, skull, or bite mark to roll Study or Survey (Position: Controlled, Effect: Great). You read calcified mineral layers, uncovering the target’s true identity, diet, poison exposure, or the exact creature that inflicted a bite mark.
    • Analgesic Grip: Gain +1 Effect on Doctor or Tinker rolls when performing oral surgery, field dentistry, or extracting foreign objects from wounds without alerting nearby guards with screams.
    • Hydroxyapatite Restoration: Spend 1 Stress while touching a wounded ally to roll Doctor (Standard Effect). A successful roll mends cracked teeth or facial bones and clears a Level 1 Harm associated with dental trauma, facial cuts, or localized rot.
    • Anesthetic Root-Soothe: Spend 1 Stress and make a Skirmish or Finesse roll while touching a guard’s jaw. On a 4/5 or 6, their mouth and vocal cords go numb, silencing them and preventing shouts, alarms, or whistle-blowing for several minutes.
    • Jaw-Wedge Reaction: When an enemy or trained beast attacks you with a bite, spend 1 Stress to execute a reaction with Skirmish. On a success (4/5 or 6), calcification locks the creature’s jaw joints; the bite misses, and the attacker gains the temporary condition Locked Jaw, preventing further bite attacks until cleared.
    • Complication Hazard: On a 1–3 or Devil’s Bargain, the high-frequency vibration agitates nearby watch-hounds or leaves your fingers numb, adding a tick to a trouble clock like Hounds on the Scent or Numb Hands.

The target regains 1d4 + your Wisdom modifier in hit points. If used specifically on teeth or tusks, it instantly repairs up to three broken or decayed teeth with pristine enamel.
    • Anesthetic Root-Soothe: As an action, you can expend 1 charge and touch the jaw or cheek of a creature within 5 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or have its oral cavity completely numbed for 1 minute. While numbed, the creature cannot speak, use bite attacks, or cast spells that require verbal components. The creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.
    • Jaw-Wedge Counter: When a creature within 5 feet targets you or an adjacent ally with a bite attack, you can use your reaction to expend 1 charge and thrust an open pearl-capped hand into its maw. The attacker must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw. • Anesthetic Root-Soothe: When you touch an opponent’s jaw during a Fight or Sneaky exchange, you may create the situation aspect Numbed Vocal Cords and Slack Jaw with one free invoke. While this aspect persists, the target cannot speak, utter incantations, or make bite attacks.
    • Jaw-Wedge Counter: When defending against a Fight attack made via a bite, you may defend using Physique. If you succeed with style, you take no damage; instead, calcification flash-seizes the attacker’s mandible, applying the situation aspect Locked Mandible with two free invokes and denying them bite attacks until overcome.
  • Flaw Hazard: If an opponent invokes your Trouble aspect, your pearl caps discharge an ultrasonic whine that provokes canines and predatory beasts, immediately giving them a free boost on attacks against you.
