Qigong 417 of the Sunder Spike

  • Lore: Forged by the Quarry-Breakers of the Red Basin, this ascetic tool was designed for laborers and sappers tasked with leveling stone bastions and carving paths through sheer granite. The order taught that true structural demolition is not an act of crude brutality, but a harmonious alignment of breath and kinetic resonance. By drawing explosive exhalations from the lower dantian directly down through the arm meridians, a cultivator transfers compressed vibration into solid matter, exploiting microscopic stress faults to shatter dense stone and reinforced timber with surgical efficiency.
  • Description: A heavy, forearm-length bracer crafted from coarse-grained basalt and banded with oxidized river-iron. Embedded along the anterior ridge of the forearm are three stepped chisels of dull hematite, seated over a deep channel of woven horsehair soaked in camphor oil. The thumb-loop connects to a hollow brass percussion ring worn around the base of the thumb; when clicked sharply against stone, it creates an acoustic feedback note that guides the cultivator’s respiratory cadence.

    • Resonance Fault Alignment: The wearer’s strikes intuitively find natural fracture lines, mortar weaknesses, and microscopic grain flaws in inorganic matter, dealing double damage to non-magical structures, doors, barricades, and worked stone.
    • Shockwave Dispersion: Heavy impacts, structural collapses, and concussive vibrations traveling back into the wearer’s forearm are absorbed and redirected safely through the basalt plate into the earth, granting complete immunity to self-inflicted recoil damage from strikes against hard surfaces.
    • Grip of the Bedrock Anchor: When planting the braced arm against a solid wall, floor, or boulder, somatic qi anchors the user’s stance, preventing forced pushback, knockdown, or displacement caused by falling rubble or pressure waves.
  • Activable Magic:
    • Percussive Sunder-Strike:
      • Action Cost: 1 Action
      • Effect: The wearer draws a deep breath, compresses qi in the lower dantian, and releases an explosive exhalation while driving the hematite ridge against an object or structure. The strike delivers a focused shockwave that bypasses the target’s hardness or damage threshold, instantly fracturing up to a 5-foot cube of worked stone, masonry, or solid wood. Usable twice per day, recharging after a long rest.
    • Sapper’s Harmonic Pulse:
      • Action Cost: 1 Bonus Action / Minor Action
      • Effect: The wearer clicks the brass thumb-ring against a surface and inhales slowly. For 1 minute, the wearer perceives the internal load-bearing stress, hollow chambers, and hidden structural anchor points within any barrier or ceiling within 15 feet as a series of tactile, rhythmic vibrations. Usable once per short rest.
    • Shatter-Point Rebound:
      • Action Cost: 1 Reaction / Interrupt
      • Effect: When an adversary misses a melee strike against the wearer and hits an adjacent stone or masonry surface, or when falling debris falls within 5 feet, the wearer snaps their wrist to channel qi into the impacted point. The struck stone bursts into jagged shrapnel in a 10-foot cone toward an adjacent enemy, dealing minor concussive damage and forcing them to stagger back. Usable twice per day, recharging after a long rest.

Quarry Guilds, Siege Depots, and Commercial Valuation of the Sunder-Spike

  • Quarry Guildhalls and Masonry Collectives:
    • Setting: Situated along the dry limestone cuts and red-granite terraces of the mining basins, these compounds smell of pulverized rock, bitter stone-dust, camphor oil, and sulfurous drilling wash. Heavy timber racks hold chisels, iron sledges, and stone splitters beside measuring chains and crane winches.
    • Buying: Licensed quarry sappers, canal excavators, and demolition contractors purchase these bracers as standard heavy-duty field gear for the benchmark rate of 9 silver coins. Full guild members in good standing or authorized basin foremen receive an official working-craft discount, securing the bracer for 7 silver coins and 5 nickels, with the provision that resale to unauthorized free-agents is forbidden.
    • Selling: Guild quartermasters inspect the basalt bracer for deep stress fractures and test the hematite ridges for dulling. If the river-iron bands are sound and the resonance core remains intact, they pay the standard salvage return of 9 copper coins, typically issued as commissary credit for tempered pick-heads, replacement horsehair liners, or rough climbing canvas.
  • Frontier Waystations and Mining Supply Outposts:
    • Setting: Found at the dusty mouth of mountain gorges or near newly claimed excavation pits, these crowded, unpainted timber storefronts smell of lard, cured hide, dried salt beef, and lamp pitch. Crudely organized wooden bins hold pickaxes, iron wedges, heavy boots, and leather rigging.
    • Buying: Prospectors, independent tunnelers, and frontier mercenaries buy these pieces directly off the wall for 10 to 12 silver coins, paying a slight regional premium due to the cost of hauling heavy stone implements overland from the central basins.
    • Selling: Outpost factors take operational bracers for the baseline scrap price of 9 copper coins. If the outpost faces an immediate engineering crisis—such as a mine cave-in, blocked trade pass, or an active claim-jumping skirmish demanding rapid sapping—they will offer up to 1 silver coin and 2 nickels in barter credit for rations, lamp oil, or pack mules.
  • Municipal Engineering Arsenals and Siege Depots:
    • Setting: Built into the stone vaults of district fortresses or city garrisons, these administrative hubs smell of damp mortar, cold cast iron, linseed oil, and chalk. Quartermasters catalog military picks, sapping shields, trench shovels, and siege focuses under the watch of armed sentries.
    • Buying: Free-company sappers, combat engineers, and hired siege mercenaries acquire these bracers through official military requisitions or open garrison surplus sales. Standard acquisition runs at the regulation cost of 9 silver coins, though during public auctions of decommissioned wall-clearing gear, lots can occasionally open around 5 silver coins and close near 9 or 10 silver coins.
    • Selling: Military depots rarely offer coin to private wanderers, though returned or decommissioned bracers are accepted for armory scrap at the official salvage credit of 9 copper coins, which can be applied toward repair services or rations.
  • Black-Market Excavation Fences and Smuggler Dens:
    • Setting: Hidden within low subterranean cellars, abandoned drainage vaults, or shanties near municipal graveyards, these illicit stalls smell of stagnant damp, sour mash, wet hemp, and stale pipe-smoke. Goods are kept hidden beneath burlap covers and loose flagstones.
    • Buying: Tomb-robbers, urban wall-breachers, and subterranean smugglers buy these tools to silently breach stone bank vaults, cellar foundations, or crypt seals without causing noisy cave-ins. Illicit brokers sell them untracked for 11 to 14 silver coins, charging an extortionate markup for anonymity.
    • Selling: Fences will purchase unblemished bracers from thieves or deserters for the fixed scrap rate of 9 copper coins. If an active municipal lockdown has driven up the demand for covert escape tunnels or sewer breaching tools, an enterprising fence may pay up to 1 silver coin in unmarked local coin.

Tactical Roleplay and Environmental Applications of the Sunder-Spike

  • Narrow Subterranean Tunnels and Collapsing Mines:
    • Defensive Roleplay: While navigating an unstable drift, an explosive shockwave from a failed blast shatters the timber supports, bringing down a cascade of jagged ceiling rocks. The avatar drops into a low horse-stance and slams the basalt forearm against the cave wall, engaging the passive Grip of the Bedrock Anchor and Shockwave Dispersion. The bracer channels the concussive pressure and rock impact directly through the stone into the bedrock without transferring bone-snapping recoil to the avatar’s shoulder, creating a reinforced pocket of dead space that shields trailing allies from the cave-in.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Trapped in a dead-end corridor with pursuing burrowing beasts closing the distance, the sapper taps the brass thumb-ring against the stone wall to activate Sapper’s Harmonic Pulse. Feeling the dull vibration return through the hematite teeth, the avatar locates a thin structural faultline separating the tunnel from an adjacent water reservoir. Drawing a violent breath from the lower dantian, the sapper unleashes Percussive Sunder-Strike, punching the hematite ridge into the fault. The wall disintegrates in a single blast, venting thousands of gallons of pressurized mud directly down the throat of the tunnel into the charging pack while the avatar wedges into a high crevice.
  • Fortified Bastions and Urban Siege Walls:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Advancing across an open courtyard under heavy fire from wall-mounted ballistas, a heavy bolt deflects off a stone archway beside the avatar, showering the squad in high-velocity stone shards. The avatar snaps their braced arm up as an immediate reaction to trigger Shatter-Point Rebound. Intercepting the falling masonry with the bracer’s kinetic resonance, the avatar deflects the concussive blast outward, redirecting the flying shrapnel into an advancing skirmish line of guards, cutting their approach short and forcing them to raise shields.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Under cover of night, the sapper reaches the base of an iron-strapped garrison gatehouse. Whispering a low respiratory cadence to settle internal qi, the avatar presses the basalt edge against the reinforced granite footings. Tapping the brass ring, the avatar diagnoses where the foundational load bears heaviest. Channeling an explosive exhalation through the teeth, the avatar executes Percussive Sunder-Strike, fracturing the primary cornerstone. With its structural load severed, the archway groans and caves inward under its own mass, leveling the reinforced timber gates and clearing an avenue of breach for the assault vanguard.
  • Narrow Mountain Defiles and Sheer Chasm Crossings:
    • Defensive Roleplay: Pinned down on a two-foot-wide cliff trail by archers shooting from an overhanging ledge above, loose rock and scree rain down upon the party. The avatar drives the braced arm flat into the sheer cliffside. Somatic qi locks into the granite face via Grip of the Bedrock Anchor, holding the avatar completely steady against falling boulders and eliminating the danger of losing footing and tumbling into the gorge below.
    • Offensive Roleplay: Seeing an elite enemy vanguard crossing a natural stone bridge spanning a fifty-foot crevasse, the avatar charges onto the bridge’s near abutment. Activating Sapper’s Harmonic Pulse, the avatar detects the key tension spine of the natural arch with a single brass-ring strike. Lunging forward with Percussive Sunder-Strike, the hematite chisels bite into the keystone with a thunderous crack. The strike splits the central fissure clean across the span, dropping the bridge and the entire enemy cadre into the chasm while the avatar leaps back to solid rim ground.

Perception of Activation:

  • Sight:
    • User’s Perspective: The dark basalt plate of the bracer darkens to a matte, light-devouring charcoal, while the three hematite chisels along the forearm flare with a dull, cherry-red embers’ glow. Fine, spiderweb fractures in the target stone or masonry light up in your field of view as glowing red fault lines, tracing the path where kinetic force will travel.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Onlookers see the bracer shudder under sudden internal pressure as the red hematite ridges emit a sharp, heated luminescence. When the bracer strikes stone, a radial burst of pale dust and a visible circular distortion ring in the air erupt outward from the point of contact.
    • Positives: Instantly highlights structural weaknesses, hidden load-bearing stress points, and pre-existing fractures in inorganic material.
    • Negatives: Produces a bright, glowing flash of red light and a burst of pulverized dust, instantly spoiling visual concealment in dark tunnels or night operations.
  • Hearing:
    • User’s Perspective: The hollow brass percussion ring emits a sharp, crystal-clear click that reverberates through the bones of your arm, transforming the internal rush of your breath into a deep, rhythmic bass drone. The strike itself does not produce a dull thud, but a sharp, high-frequency crack like lightning splitting dry timber, followed by the deep, hollow groaning of collapsing masonry.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Anyone within thirty yards hears an initial high-pitched metallic snap from the thumb-ring, followed immediately by an ear-splitting, concussive boom resembling a subterranean blast or a cannon discharge against bedrock.
    • Positives: Provides immediate acoustic feedback that helps maintain the user’s explosive respiratory cadence even amidst the chaos of battle or collapse.
    • Negatives: The concussive boom is exceptionally loud, alerting nearby guards, wildlife, or sentries across vast subterranean networks and urban quarters.
  • Touch:
    • User’s Perspective: A sudden wave of intense, dry heat floods down the lung and pericardium meridians into the forearm, filling the muscles with a sensation of immoveable mass like a pillar of solid lead. Upon impact, rather than feeling a jarring recoil shock in your wrist and elbow, you feel the stone yield like dried clay, with the concussive vibration rushing harmlessly past your skin and sinking deep into the bedrock beneath your boots.
    • Observer’s Perspective: The user’s stance appears unnaturally rooted, their muscles locking with the rigid stability of a stone buttress; despite the massive energy of the blow, the user’s arm does not rebound or shudder backward.
    • Positives: Eliminates recoil shock, bone bruises, and wrist sprains from heavy strikes against unyielding granite or reinforced ironwood.
    • Negatives: Leaves the forearm muscles feeling heavy, stiff, and slightly numb for a few seconds following discharge, slightly hindering fine manual dexterity like picking locks or writing.
  • Smell:
    • User’s Perspective: Your nostrils are filled with the sharp, clean scent of crushed rock, pulverized river silt, and scorched minerals, underscored by the bitter, resinous vapor of heated camphor oil rising from the horsehair bed beneath the basalt.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers smell an unmistakable blast of hot stone-dust, ozone, and pungent, medicinal camphor blowing past them on the concussive pressure wave.
    • Positives: The pungent camphor vapors act as a powerful respiratory stimulant, clearing clogged sinuses and preventing dizziness caused by breathing fine masonry dust.
    • Negatives: Leaves a persistent, telltale odor of burnt camphor and pulverized stone on the user’s gear that tracking beasts can easily follow.
  • Taste:
    • User’s Perspective: A dry, chalky, alkaline taste coats the back of your throat, accompanied by a sharp, metallic tang resembling sucking on a rusted iron coin or biting into river grit.
    • Observer’s Perspective: Observers notice the user grimacing and forcefully clearing their throat or spitting a trace of grit-colored saliva as the compressed exhalation concludes.
    • Positives: Stimulates the salivary glands against the dry, stifling dust clouds typical of collapsed tunnels and crumbled ruins.
    • Negatives: Dries out the throat rapidly over repeated strikes, inducing sudden thirst and requiring frequent swigs of water to maintain speech.
  • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
    • Seismic Tectonic Empathy:
      • User’s Perspective: When touching a solid barrier, you feel the entire structure’s mass as a three-dimensional web of tension and weight resting directly against your mind. You sense where the roof is sagging, where hollow pockets or hidden rooms lie behind the masonry, and which single stone holds the equilibrium of the entire arch.
      • Observer’s Perspective: To onlookers, the sapper appears to be stroking or listening to the stone like an animate creature, tilting their head to follow unseen currents beneath the rock surface.
      • Positives: Allows instant, non-destructive diagnosis of hidden doors, secret cavities, weak mortar seams, and imminent structural collapses.
      • Negatives: Causes brief cognitive disorientation when touching complex, massive, or multi-layered structures, as the sheer weight and tension of the architecture floods the senses.
    • Harmonic Resonance Echo:
      • User’s Perspective: As the brass ring clicks, you perceive an expanding pulse of vibration that bounces off different materials with distinct tactile textures—granite feels dense and ringing, mortar feels soft and porous, void space feels like a cold vacuum, and metal feels like a sharp, vibrating wire.
      • Observer’s Perspective: A qi-sensitive observer sees a ripple of dull brown-and-gold energy radiate outward from the bracer through the floor and walls, revealing the density of the surrounding architecture.
      • Positives: Bypasses visual obscurity entirely, allowing the user to map out tunnels, cave structures, and hidden crawlspaces through total darkness.
      • Negatives: Moving machinery, underground torrents, or shifting earth can introduce chaotic vibrational feedback, obscuring static architectural features.

Recipe: Bracer of the Sunder-Spike Qigong Focus

  • Materials Needed:
    • One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (rough-hewn or unpolished, dense resonance core harvested from deep bedrock).
    • One curved slab of fine-grained volcanic basalt (free of inclusions, air pockets, or micro-cracks; cut to match the forearm).
    • Three wedge-shaped blocks of raw, metallic hematite (high iron content, ground to chisel points).
    • Two hoops of malleable river-iron (hand-forged bands for upper and lower bracer retention).
    • One hollow brass ring (sized to fit comfortably around the base of the thumb).
    • One bundle of coarse, braided horsehair (sufficient to line the inner curve of the bracer).
    • Two ounces of pure camphor resin oil (for soaking the horsehair bed and lubricating stone channels).
    • Four ounces of molten pitch-resin or pine pitch mixed with pulverized limestone (structural shock-damping adhesive).
    • One cured cowhide leather strap with brass tongue-buckles (for forearm securing).
  • Tools Required:
    • One cold-forged stonecutter’s chisel and hardened steel punch set.
    • One heavy granite-dressing hammer (two-pound face).
    • One portable bench vise with lead-lined jaws (to hold stone without fracturing).
    • One set of carborundum sharpening stones and abrasive quartz sand slurry (for lapping and finishing).
    • One small bronze heating crucible and charcoal brazier.
    • One hand-cranked iron drill with hardened drill bits (for boring retention holes in basalt).
    • One leather-working awl and heavy waxed-linen thread.
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Masonry & Lapidary: Skill Level 2 (for carving, hollowing, and seating basalt and hematite without inducing internal stress fractures).
    • Blacksmithing & Joinery: Skill Level 1 (for cold-peening river-iron bands and shaping brass acoustic rings).
    • Qigong Breath Cultivation: Basic mastery of explosive exhalations, dantian kinetic compression, and meridian earth-anchoring.
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Dress and Hollow the Basalt Sleeve: Mount the volcanic basalt slab into the bench vise. Using the granite-dressing hammer and cold-forged chisels, hollow out the underside to contour smoothly around the artisan’s forearm. Carve a stepped, recessed trench along the top exterior ridge to create a bed for the three hematite chisels. Smooth the inner channel using carborundum stones and wet quartz sand slurry until no sharp ridges remain.
    • Embed the Somatic Resonance Crystal: Drill a shallow circular pocket into the thickest section of the basalt trench, situated directly above where the bracer rests against the arm’s wrist joint. Insert the Tier 1 magic crystal into the pocket, packing it tightly with a heated mixture of pine pitch and pulverized limestone to create an unbroken vibrational conduit between the core and the stone shell.
    • Cut and Seat the Hematite Chisels: Shape the three hematite blocks into stepped wedge-chisels using abrasive stones. Coat the bottom of the basalt trench with a thick layer of braided horsehair saturated in camphor resin oil. Seat the three hematite wedges into the stepped groove on top of the oiled horsehair bed, ensuring the tips protrude uniformly along the forearm ridge to form the striking edge.
    • Band with River-Iron: Heat the two river-iron hoops over the charcoal brazier until dull red and pliable. Slide the iron bands over the tapered ends of the basalt bracer, seating them over pre-cut retention grooves at the wrist and elbow joints. As the iron cools and contracts, it clamps the hematite chisels and horsehair bed rigidly into the basalt shell without requiring mechanical pins.
    • Fit the Brass Thumb-Ring and Leather Rigging: Drill two small guide-holes into the lower wrist lip of the basalt bracer. Fasten the hollow brass thumb-ring to the bracer with a short loop of braided hemp and copper wire, tuning the ring’s clearance so it strikes cleanly against stone when the thumb curls. Rivet the cured cowhide straps and brass buckles to the underside of the basalt plate using the punch and steel rivets.
    • Somatic Attunement and Meridian Awakening: Strap the finished bracer securely to the dominant forearm and slip the brass ring over the base of the thumb. Assume a low, grounded horse-stance on solid bedrock. Inhale deeply from the lower dantian, compress the breath, and release ten minutes of explosive, rhythmic exhalations through clenched teeth, striking the brass thumb-ring sharply against stone with each exhale. When the hematite chisels heat to a dull cherry-red glow and the concussive shock passes into the ground without jarring the arm, the bracer’s meridians are synchronized and the item is fully awakened.

Basalt Arm and Sapper Who Spoke to Bone of Mountain Before Iron Gate Broke

In the cycle of moons before the high river became red mud, there ruled in the upper terraced canyon a warlord whose skin was painted with pig-fat and copper filings, whom the ditch-diggers called General Ox-Neck, but his imperial papers bore the seal of Prince Deng. This man possessed a fortified gate made of mountain ironwood three spans thick, braced behind with forty squared beams of green ash, which rested against the throat of the Red Basin like a stone stuck in the throat of an ox. Because of this gate, the salt-wagons could not descend to the low villages, and the children of the clay-burners ate soup made from water-beetles and the dust of dry weeds.

Now Prince Deng spoke from his high parapet to the starving people below: “The gods have set the rock upon the rock, and between the rock is my gate. Unless an ox can walk through an iron plate, or unless a river runs backward into the clouds, the grain-sacks shall rot in my storehouse until the mice grow horns, and not one handful of meal shall pass downward without the payment of three copper weights per skin.”

Then the elders of the lower ditches sought out the Quarry-Breakers of the Red Rock, who lived not in silk houses, but in holes chipped out of the dry shale where the sun burns the skin black. Among these ditch-hewers was an unwashed sapper whom the ancient scribe calls Brother Gou-Who-Eats-Grit. He had no sword upon his girdle, nor did he possess a horse with a bronze bit; his left eye was clouded with the white milk of stone-blindness, and his right arm was strapped with an ugly trough of black fire-stone, bound to his flesh with the iron that floats to the bottom of the wash-troughs. Along the ridge of this basalt sat three teeth of dull blood-stone that did not shine, and upon his thumb rattled a yellow brass ring that sounded like a dry cicada when it drops upon a baked brick.

The ancient translation of the Third Silt Era says: Brother Gou did not run upon the gate with the fury of a wild hog that dashes its teeth against an oak tree; he laid his ear against the bottom sill where the river-moss was dried to brown powder, and he breathed through his nose with the sound, huff-huff-ha, like the leather bellows that melts the plow-shares.

When the breath was pushed into his navel-pot, Brother Gou lifted his hand and struck the yellow ring against the foot-block of the gate. The ring made a sound: ting-tong.

From the top of the timber battlement, Prince Deng laughed with his captains until his copper earrings shook. “Look down upon the ditch-worm!” cried the Prince. “He comes with a black rock on his arm to tap upon my mountain gate as a woodpecker taps upon an elm! Bring forth the tubs of boiling horse-dung and the hot bitumen; pour them upon his bare pate until his scalp peels like a scalded turnip!”

The lictors tilted the great lead cauldrons, and a stream of boiling bitumen fell through the murder-holes like a black rope.

Yet Brother Gou did not skip sideways like a frightened hare. He dropped his loins until his thighs were parallel with the mud-flags, driven into the low posture of the Mountain-Root. He drove his braced forearm flat against the lowest cornerstone that held the weight of the left ash post, engaging the Grip of the Bedrock Anchor.

The stone-writings say: The burning oil fell upon the basalt as rain falls upon a tortoise-shell; the stone drank the fire, and the stink of hot camphor rose from the horsehair under the iron bands like the smoke from an ancestral altar. Though the hot mud washed across his leather skirt, the bone of his arm did not shudder, nor did the iron ring loosen from his thumb, for his soul had become as heavy as forty carts of wet lime.

Then Brother Gou clicked the brass ring a second time against the rock, engaging the Sapper’s Harmonic Pulse.

Through the hematite chisels, the stone did not feel cold or deaf to his marrow. The ancient text, translated by the foolish schoolman of the Reed-Ditch, says: The rock within the wall was singing to him, weeping like an old widow whose house-beam has rotted at the joint. He heard where the mortar had been drowned by the winter rains; he felt the great ironwood beam bend in the dark, groaning where a three-inch worm had eaten a hole through the heart-wood.

“Lord Prince,” spoke Brother Gou through the grit in his teeth, and his words were short like stones dropping into a dry well: “Your timber is green, but your cornerstone is brittle like dried curd. It has carried your pride for twenty years, but it cannot carry the breath that comes out of the deep earth.”

Prince Deng spat from the parapet and called for seventy archers, bidding them drive three-foot bodkins through the sapper’s ribs.

Then Brother Gou drew a great breath from the belly-house. He closed his lips until the breath whistled through his teeth like the wind across a broken pot, and he unleashed the Percussive Sunder-Strike.

He drove the three hematite chisels not against the middle of the heavy timber gate where the iron bands were thickest, but into a small, gray knot of flint that sat beneath the left hinge-post.

The translation of the Fifth Dynasty records: There was no sound of a hammer falling upon an anvil; there was only a great shout of thunder that did not fall from the clouds, but came upward out of the red bedrock. The blood-stones upon the bracer turned red like the eye of a boiled crab, and a circle of gray dust flew out from the wall as wide as seven carts.

The cornerstone did not crack into two pieces; it turned into fine sand that ran down into the drainage ditch like water. The great left hinge, torn from its anchor, sheared through its bronze bolts with the scream of a butchered sow. Deprived of its foot-stone, the forty spans of ash-timber groaned, bowed outward, and fell forward into the ditch with a crash that threw the seventy archers from the wall and cracked the parapet stones like dried melon rinds.

The gate was no more; where the three-span ironwood had stood, there was only a wide road of crushed gravel and splintered wood, over which a blind mule could walk without stumbling.

Prince Deng lay in the ditch with his copper paint scraped away and his jaw broken against a loose tile. He held up two handfuls of imperial stamped silver and wept: “Do not strike my belly with your black stone! Take the silver of the Red Basin, and take my three wagons of sheep-wool, and be made the Chief Mason of the Seven Districts!”

Brother Gou tapped the brass ring once against his basalt sleeve to shake the red dust from the iron bands. He looked neither upon the silver nor upon the crying warlord. He spat out a mouthful of alkaline chalk, wiped his brow with the greasy horsehair liner, and turned his face back toward the stone-pits; for the ancient writing reminds us that he whose breath can break a mountain wall has no need of a warlord’s copper, for every stone upon the earth is already his servant.

Moral of the story: The fool trusts in the thickness of his iron walls and the shouting of his guards, believing high stone will forever shut out the hungry; but the wise man knows that no fortress is stronger than the single faultline hidden beneath its foot, and he who can breathe with the bedrock can shatter with one finger what a thousand swords cannot bend.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)

Bracer of the Sunder-Spike

  • Description & Lore: Formed from a curved plate of coarse volcanic basalt banded with river-iron, this wrist bracer carries three stepped hematite chisels set over an oil-soaked horsehair liner, with a small brass percussion ring fitted to the thumb. Devised by ascetic quarry sappers, the focus channels explosive, dantian-centered exhalations into solid matter, allowing an investigator to bypass structural barriers, withstand falling masonry, and read hidden stress points in ancient subterranean stone.
  • Item Type: Enchanted Relic / Sapper’s Focus
  • Sanity Cost: None to wear or activate.
  • Game Mechanics:
    • Resonance Fault Alignment (Passive): When attempting to damage, demolish, or breach non-living, non-magical structures (such as brick walls, sealed cellar doors, flagstones, or stone sarcophagi), the user gains a bonus die on STR or Fighting (Brawl) checks and inflicts double the rolled structural damage.
    • Shockwave Dispersion & Bedrock Anchor (Passive): The user suffers no recoil damage when striking hard mineral surfaces and receives an automatic Extreme success on rolls to resist being knocked down, pushed back, or buried by falling rubble or pressure waves while anchored against a solid surface.
    • Percussive Sunder-Strike (Active): Costs 3 Magic Points. The user exhales explosively while driving the hematite chisels into a target barrier. The strike ignores the target’s armor/build value and instantly shatters up to a 5-foot section of worked stone, masonry, or heavy timber. Usable twice per day.
    • Sapper’s Harmonic Pulse (Active): Costs 1 Magic Point. By tapping the brass ring against a surface and pacing their breath, the user gains a bonus die on Spot Hidden or Mechanical Repair checks made to detect hollow chambers, hidden doors, structural load points, or imminent ceiling collapses within 15 feet. Usable once per scene.
    • Shatter-Point Rebound (Active): As a reaction when an adversary misses a melee attack and strikes adjacent stone within 5 feet, or when masonry collapses overhead, the user spends 1 Magic Point to channel kinetic qi into the impact. The stone bursts outward in a 10-foot cone toward an attacker, inflicting 1D6 concussive damage and forcing a DEX check to avoid falling prone. Usable twice per day.

Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition / 2024 Revision)

Bracer of the Sunder-Spike

  • Wondrous Item, Common (Requires Attunement)
  • Slot: Wrists
  • Description & Lore: A heavy forearm bracer carved from dense volcanic basalt and bound with river-iron straps, featuring three stepped hematite chisels and a brass ring worn at the base of the thumb. Developed by ascetic sappers, this focus synchronizes focused exhalations with kinetic shockwaves to shatter inorganic fortifications, withstand collapsing debris, and locate architectural stress points.
  • Item Properties:
    • Resonance Fault Alignment: Whenever you hit an inorganic, non-magical object or structure (such as a door, masonry wall, or stone barrier) with an unarmed strike using this bracer, the strike deals double damage.
    • Shockwave Dispersion & Bedrock Anchor: You cannot suffer recoil or bludgeoning damage from striking inanimate surfaces. While you have at least one hand braced against a solid stone or wooden surface, you have advantage on saving throws and ability checks against being pushed, pulled, or knocked prone.
    • Percussive Sunder-Strike: As an action, you release an explosive exhalation and drive the hematite ridge into an object or structure within 5 feet. The strike automatically deals 3d10 bludgeoning damage to the target, ignoring any damage threshold or damage reduction. If this destroys the target, it shatters up to a 5-foot cube of worked stone, masonry, or solid timber. You can use this property twice, regaining expended uses after a long rest.
    • Sapper’s Harmonic Pulse: As a bonus action, you strike the brass thumb-ring against a surface. For 1 minute, you gain advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) and Wisdom (Perception) checks made to locate secret doors, hollow spaces, and structural stress points within 15 feet. Once used, this property cannot be used again until you finish a short or long rest.
    • Shatter-Point Rebound: When a creature misses you with a melee weapon attack and hits an adjacent stone, masonry, or wooden surface, or when falling rubble drops within 5 feet of you, you can use your reaction to vent concussive qi into the impact. Shrapnel bursts in a 10-foot cone toward the attacking creature or an adjacent space. Creatures in that area must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 bludgeoning damage and be pushed 5 feet away. You can use this property twice, regaining expended uses after a long rest.
