Aegis Circlet of the Astral Ledger 814

Lore

When the high counting houses and celestial cloisters across the 73 sovereign island nations found their archives threatened by astral incursions and chaotic psychic storms, the grand inquisitors sought a single relic capable of absolute defensive calculation. In an artisan sanctum powered by elemental steam vents, master artificers gathered five Tier 1 sacrifices: the runed silver circlet of the sages, the phantom thorn ointment, the serene draught of still thoughts, the star-tempered shield plate, and the abacus-sleeved tally ring. Bound together under the supreme balance of the moon-goddess Gaialilith and anchored by a massive Tier 5 crystalline battery, the physical forms collapsed into an indivisible cranial armature. The resulting relic occupies a solitary physical slot, blending unyielding celestial wards, mathematical analysis, mental tranquility, and thorny misdirection into a singular instrument of defense.

Description

A single, articulated cranial crown and brow-shield forged from starlight-infused xyronium alloy and cold-hammered industrial nickel. Across the frontal crest sits a reinforced, miniature shield-plate inlaid with astral constellations and silver runes, flanked by curved cheek-guards sculpted into barbed, thorned vine lattices. Embedded along the upper rim is a track of ten flawless amber-glass beads that click softly and slide with frictionless ease, responding directly to the wearer’s neurological pulses. A central cabochon of clear quartz rests against the forehead, bathing the wearer’s temples in a milky, pearlescent glow and releasing a crisp scent of clean rain, fresh mint, and ozone.

Multiple Passives Magic

  • Astral Bastion & Undead Warding: The xyronium brow-plate projects a constant 15-foot radiant aura. Undead entities, parasitic phantoms, and malevolent astral horrors within this field suffer severe disorientation, weakening their offensive momentum, while the wearer gains total immunity to natural fear and non-magical mental manipulation.
  • Fortress of Serene Intellect: The central quartz crystal and inscribed silver runes create an impenetrable mental sanctuary. The wearer’s thoughts cannot be read, scryed, or emotionally manipulated by hostile effects, and any attempt to inflict psychic shock slides harmlessly off the wearer’s placid consciousness.
  • Kinetic Tally & Wealth Resonance: The articulated nickel tracks and amber beads shift continuously to maintain the wearer’s physical equilibrium, granting a +5 bonus to balance checks. The beads also vibrate with a faint magnetic tug when within 15 feet of hidden caches of silver, gold, or refined magical alloys.
  • Thorny Shroud of Misdirection: Spectral, moonlight-hued vines interlace across the wearer’s silhouette, breaking up light and casting faint illusory afterimages that grant a +5 bonus to stealth checks and obscure the wearer’s true location in dim light or shadows.

Multiple Active Magics

  • Audit of Structural Ruin (1 Action): The wearer snaps the cranial beads along their tracks, sending a high-frequency kinetic calculation through an adjacent foe or structure. This instantly reveals load-bearing flaws or gaps in armor, granting maximum penetration and precision on the avatar’s next physical strike.
  • Aura of the Still Pond (1 Action): Expending stored tranquility from the central quartz crystal, the wearer projects an expanding 20-foot field of absolute calm. Hostile beasts, raging warriors, and agitated sentries within the radius must cease aggression and enter a state of peaceful stillness for 1 minute unless harmed.
  • Cosmic Radiant Pulse (1 Action): The frontal xyronium shield flares with the light of a collapsing star. All hostile targets within a 30-foot radius suffer severe radiant burning damage; undead creatures caught within the blast are instantly blinded for 1 minute and repelled 15 feet.
  • Veil of Razor Phantoms (1 Action): The crown erupts into a dense sphere of swirling, illusory thorn-vines spanning a 15-foot radius centered on the wearer. Foes attempting to strike the wearer suffer illusory lacerations that confuse their targeting, while the wearer creates minor auditory distractions to vanish into plain sight.
  • Instantaneous Logistical Census (1 Action): The wearer unleashes an amber pulse that counts, weighs, and values all non-magical objects, loose coins, or structural materials within a 50-foot radius, instantly transmitting an exact numerical tally into the wielder’s conscious mind.

Specific Slot for this Single Item

Targeting, Disabling, and Repairing Aegis-Circlet of the Astral Ledger 814

  • Targeting and Disabling Thresholds:
    • When an attacker declares a targeted strike against the circlet while it is worn, the attack roll must bypass a dedicated defensive threshold rather than standard body evasion.
    • The threshold to strike the circlet equals the wearer avatar’s total Armor Check plus the avatar’s tier level (5) plus the roll of the avatar’s tier dice (5d12) plus the item’s own Armor Check value (+3).
    • If a targeted strike successfully hits, the circlet is immediately disabled and unattuned, causing all celestial wards, radiant auras, sensory tallies, mental shields, and active magics to shut down instantly.
    • If a targeted attack hits the circlet while it is already disabled or unattuned, incoming damage applies directly to the item’s hit point pool.
    • The circlet possesses a total hit point pool equal to the avatar’s maximum hit points plus 50 (calculated as base resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 5).
    • The item enters a physically broken state when it takes targeted damage equal to or exceeding half of its total hit point pool:$$\frac{\text{Avatar Maximum Hit Points} + 50}{2}$$
    • Once reduced to half health or lower, the circlet’s quartz core fractures, its amber bead tracks warp, its xyronium brow-plate cracks, and its enchantments cannot be accessed or attuned until full repairs are completed.
    • If targeted damage reduces the circlet to zero hit points, the item is obliterated, shattering into worthless fragments of split nickel alloy, warped xyronium slag, pulverized quartz powder, and crushed amber glass shards.
  • Repair Procedures:
    • The circlet cannot naturally regenerate lost durability over time, rests, or sleep; all sustained structural and magical damage must be restored by deliberate artisan intervention.
    • The item cannot be re-attuned or worn with functional magic while in a broken state; its hit point pool must be completely restored back to maximum capacity before attunement is permitted.
    • Restoring the circlet requires an artisan, lapidary, or runic smith with advanced proficiencies in Metallurgy, Gemcutting, Arcane Rune Lore, and Artificing at a minimum skill level of 10 (base 5 plus 5 for Tier 5).
    • Repairs must take place in an artisan workshop equipped with a steam-driven lapidary lathe, a closed-circuit elemental forge, and a jeweler’s micro-brazing apparatus to safely mend the intricate bead tracks, runic engravings, and central quartz mount.
    • Physical repairs demand matching high-grade materials: refined xyronium flux, cold-drawn nickel wire, a vial of purified pearlescent resin, and a measure of silver-ink to re-etch the internal calculation circuits and cognitive wards.
    • Once structural fractures are fused, the amber beads reseated on their frictionless rails, and the item’s hit points restored to full, the wielder must undergo a standard attunement sequence of at least one full minute under starlight or open sky before the circlet’s passives and active magics function once again.

Acquisition and Commerce of the Aegis-Circlet of the Astral Ledger 814

  • Methods of Acquisition:
    • Master Artificing Synthesis: An avatar with advanced proficiencies in Metallurgy, Gemcutting, Arcane Rune Lore, and Artificing at a minimum skill level of 10 can synthesize the five prerequisite Tier 1 items: Enchanted Circlet of Mental Fortitude, Veil of Illusory Thorns, Elixir of the Quiet Mind 72, Xyronium Radiant Shield of the Cosmos, and Tail 552 of the Auditor’s Abacus. The consolidation demands a dedicated artisan workshop equipped with closed-circuit elemental steam conduits combining fire and water, a massive Tier 5 magic crystal to act as a stabilizing mana reservoir, payment of the mandatory 15% consolidation fee based on the component values, and a successful synthesis check avoiding a roll of 1 on a d20.
    • Recovery from High Astral Observatories: The circlet may be discovered within ancient, long-abandoned astral cloisters or sealed navigational observatories constructed upon the highest sheer peaks of the 73 sovereign island nations. These mountain sanctuaries, originally built by early astrological orders to study celestial bodies under Gaialilith’s night sky, seal their inner chambers behind mathematical pressure gates, illusory bramble wards, and celestial light puzzles.
    • Disarming an Imperial Auditor-Inquisitor: Overcoming a rogue grand auditor or high inquisitor who wears the circlet provides an opportunity to secure the relic. Because the gear of slain high-tier avatars typically dissolves into wild elemental sparks upon death, the circlet must be claimed through targeted disarm combat maneuvers, high-stakes stealth extraction, or formal surrender protocols before the wearer is entirely dispatched.
    • Grand Sovereign Guild Bestowal: The unified conclaves of the Imperial Banking Scribes and the High Cloisters may formally award this artifact to an avatar who unravels a multi-national currency counterfeiting conspiracy, cleanses an ancient cathedral archive of malevolent astral entities, or stabilizes an unruly financial rift that threatens the trade balances across multiple sovereign island nations.
  • Commercial Venues, Transaction Methods, and Costs:
    • The Celestial Vault-Bourse (High-Spire Financial Sanctuary):
      • Type of Shop: A fortified mercantile sanctum located on the topmost tier of an imperial banking spire, constructed from polished white granite and reinforced with cold-hammered brass. The interior features velvet-lined glass pedestals, quiet private negotiation alcoves, and steam-driven mechanical registers that log ledgers in silence.
      • How It Is Bought and Sold: The venue strictly accommodates certified master auditors, sovereign treasury officials, and guild representatives. The head appraiser examines the fluidity of the amber bead tracks and tests the purity of the xyronium starlight-plate using optical loupes and runic tuning rods. The purchaser must undergo a supervised attunement test to confirm cognitive harmony. All payments are cleared directly via certified World Bank ledger transfers, logging the transaction and deducting the standard 1% institutional banking fee.
      • Cost to Purchase: 105 Rhodium coins (equivalent to 1,050 Platinum or 10,500 Gold).
      • Value if Sold: 50 to 53 Rhodium coins deposited directly into the seller’s World Bank ledger.
    • The Starlight Lapidary Conclave (Island Observatory District):
      • Type of Shop: A secluded, domed workshop perched on a coastal promontory, surrounded by brass telescopes and open skylights designed to catch celestial radiance. The shop specializes in sacred optics, stellar-infused metals, and meditative mental foci.
      • How It Is Bought and Sold: The lapidary master assesses the balance of the central quartz cabochon and evaluates the mental wards against a series of controlled psychic harmonics. Transactions can be settled through World Bank scrip, physical Rhodium bullion, or by exchanging unblemished raw star-metal nuggets and high-capacity mana batteries.
      • Cost to Purchase: 100 Rhodium coins (discounted due to the localized supply of celestial reagents and lapidary tools).
      • Value if Sold: 46 to 49 Rhodium coins, or a direct trade for rare celestial ores, polished foci gems, and 40 Rhodium coins.
    • The Cloistered Apothecary-Archive (Highland Monastery Hub):
      • Type of Shop: A quiet, incense-filled sanctuary built of smooth riverstone inside a mountain monastery, where master apothecaries and herbalists blend spiritual medicine with runic craftsmanship. The air smells of drying mint, chamomile, and clean rain.
      • How It Is Bought and Sold: The resident herbalists value the circlet primarily for its absolute cognitive stillness, tranquil aura, and protective vine illusions. Acquisition requires proving peaceful intent, often by demonstrating mastery over internal anxieties or engaging in a silent meditative assessment. Payment is accepted in high-tier precious metals or through certified institutional deeds of spiritual endowment.
      • Cost to Purchase: 110 Rhodium coins (commanding a premium due to the sacred nature of the monastery’s tranquil archives).
      • Value if Sold: 52 to 55 Rhodium coins, with an additional 5% credit bonus applied if the seller contributes master-tier alchemical distillates to the cloister’s medicinal stocks.
    • The Shadow-Spire Curio Bourse (Subterranean Free-Port Warrens):
      • Type of Shop: A hidden, candle-lit vault tucked away behind a false boiler bulkhead in an industrial undercity, safe from the inspection of tax assessors and inquisitorial officers.
      • How It Is Bought and Sold: The clandestine broker handles uncataloged relics, lost family treasures, and unsanctioned military arcanum. No questions regarding the artifact’s prior lineage are asked, no paperwork is registered with the World Bank, and payments are settled strictly in heavy, physical bullion to avoid institutional tracking.
      • Cost to Purchase: 125 to 140 Rhodium coins (significantly marked up due to the intense risk of circulating unregistered Tier 5 mental and financial relics).
      • Value if Sold: 58 to 62 Rhodium coins in physical, unmarked coin, provided the seller can safely transport the heavy sacks of metal out of the lawless sector.

      • In tracking nomadic raiders or uncovering buried ruin sites across endless dunes, the wearer snaps the beads to launch an Instantaneous Logistical Census, detecting buried metallic artifacts, subterranean iron gates, and deep mineral veins under the sand.
      • Engaging desert monstrosities such as sand serpents, the wearer fires a blinding Cosmic Radiant Pulse, searing the beast’s light-sensitive optics and creating a 30-foot safe perimeter for the party.
      • Against sand-skiff pirates, the avatar calculates the mechanical weak points of their sail rigs via Audit of Structural Ruin, targeting tension lines to disable the vessels’ momentum.
    • Defensive Tactics:
      • Under the scorching heat and disorienting mirages of the salt flats, the Fortress of Serene Intellect prevents heat-induced delusions, keeping the mind sharp, focused, and immune to psychological fatigue.
      • When walking across precarious sand dunes or loose scree slopes, the Kinetic Tally passive keeps the wearer’s center of gravity centered, preventing disastrous sandslides.
      • When caught in an open plain by overwhelming enemy cavalry, the wearer deploys Veil of Razor Phantoms, weaving false dust devils and thorn mirages that cause pursuers to scatter their charges in wrong directions.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Sight: The engraved constellations on the xyronium brow-shield ignite with radiant starlight, casting a soft, geometric constellation map directly into the user’s field of vision. The surrounding environment sharpens with extreme contrast; shadows pull back, and living beings appear faintly outlined in clear, pale light, while phantom vine-patterns faintly weave through the periphery without obscuring focus.
    • Sound: Ambient clutter fades into a muted hum, replaced by the rhythmic, frictionless sliding and crisp snapping of the ten amber-glass abacus beads along their nickel track. A gentle, resonant chime—reminiscent of a distant crystalline bell or a softly ringing tuning fork—vibrates harmoniously at the base of the skull.
    • Touch: A cool, soothing touch spreads from the central clear quartz cabochon directly across the forehead, easing tension and washing away physical headache and stress. Simultaneously, the barbed vine cheek-guards emit a dry, grounding warmth along the jawline, accompanied by a subtle, continuous shifting in the crown’s weight that micro-adjusts the wearer’s center of gravity.
    • Smell: The immediate air is purged of stagnant dust and decay, replaced by a crisp draft carrying the clean scent of night-blooming jasmine, damp moss, fresh mountain rain, and a distinct tang of metallic ozone.
    • Taste: A clean, sweet mineral freshness fills the mouth, similar to cold spring water infused with a faint hint of peppermint and wild clover.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Kinetic Wealth-Tug): The base of the skull experiences a subtle, directional magnetic pull, intuitive and physical, which tugs toward the dense concentrations of precious coins, buried silver, or high-tier magical alloys within the immediate area.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (The Mind of Still Water): All internal anxiety, intrusive memories, emotional panic, and mental noise instantly recede into a placid, glassy surface. Thoughts become linear, crystal-clear, and unshakeable; logic and mathematical reasoning process incoming stimuli without emotional hesitation or fear.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Spectral Spatial Geometry): The wearer instinctively perceives structural load lines, weight distributions, and hidden voids in masonry and mechanisms, sensing the environment as an interlocking matrix of mathematical equations waiting to be solved or broken.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Sight: The miniature shield crest flares with brilliant silver-white starlight, while the engraved runes along its rim pulse in a rippling rhythm from the center outward. The amber beads along the upper brow glow with concentrated honey-colored fire as they slide on their tracks, and translucent, moonlight-silver briar vines shimmer into existence around the wearer’s shoulders, flickering and casting deceptive double-images.
    • Sound: Observers hear a distinct, rapid click-clack-snap of glass beads sliding along polished metal, accompanied by an acoustic deadening effect where voices and footsteps near the wearer sound suddenly distant, muffled, and hushed.
    • Touch: Anyone standing within 10 feet feels a sudden drop in atmospheric turbulence; the air becomes perfectly still, accompanied by a cool, clean breeze that pushes back heavy humidity or swamp heat. Undead creatures feel an immediate, burning revulsion pressing against their flesh and marrow.
    • Smell: Observers catch a light scent of ozone and crushed sweet herbs lingering on an unexpected night breeze.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Aura of Implacable Logic): Sentient creatures looking upon the wearer feel an immediate, quiet gravity. The chaotic instinct to shout, panic, or act rashly is suppressed by an imposing sense of cold, unyielding order and sovereign balance, discouraging unprovoked violence.
  • Positives:
    • Grants total cognitive clarity and unshakeable mental stability, rendering the mind completely immune to terror, charms, psychic intrusion, and panic.
    • Provides instantaneous numerical, structural, and wealth analysis of the surrounding space, highlighting armor flaws, structural shear points, and concealed compartments.
    • Automatically compensates for shifts in body weight, granting perfect physical equilibrium and eliminating the danger of slips or vertigo on dangerous perches.
    • Constantly repels and weakens undead and malicious spirits with a radiant starlight ward while weaving phantom vine misdirections that frustrate enemy accuracy.
  • Negatives:
    • The luminous flare of the starlight crest, the glow of the amber beads, and the shimmering spectral vines make visual concealment nearly impossible in dark spaces unless deliberate illusionary misdirections are cast.
    • The audible, rhythmic clicking of the kinetic abacus beads gives away the wearer’s acoustic presence to sharp-eared observers nearby.
    • The profound emotional detachment can cause the wearer to perceive living companions and crises as cold, mathematical equations, dampening immediate empathy and spontaneous compassion.
    • In areas packed with massive metallic vaults or overwhelming concentrations of bullion, the directional wealth-tug can cause a mild, persistent pulling sensation in the cranial chassis that requires active concentration to ignore.

Synthesis Rite of the Sovereign Arbiter: Aegis-Circlet of the Astral Ledger 814

  • Items Merged:
  • Additional Materials Needed:
    • One Tier 5 Magic Crystal (a massive, wagon-sized crystalline mana accumulator that serves as the central containment sink during high-tier consolidation)
    • 3 pounds of refined xyronium billets and cold-drawn industrial nickel wire (to forge the unified cranial frame, brow-plate, and abacus bead-track)
    • 1 dram of silver-ink flux and powdered riverstone (to etch calculation circuitry and runic channels of mental fortitude)
    • 2 flasks of concentrated botanical and biological stabilizing agents (harvested via fluid collectors to bind the ethereal fuzz, dew, and thornvine paste without organic degradation)
    • 1 flawless clear quartz cabochon (to serve as the central tranquility focus and mental reservoir)
    • 10 calibrated, air-bubble-free amber glass beads (to seat within the kinetic abacus tracks)
  • Tools Required:
    • Master Steam-Powered Forge and Lapidary Lathe (drawing pressurized elemental steam from balanced closed-circuit fire and water conduits)
    • High-Durability Ceramic Crucible and Scribing Basin (for breaking down the physical matrix of the sacrificial relics without metal-on-metal contamination)
    • Diamond-Tipped Micro-Engraving Needles and Jeweler’s Loupe (for inscribing microscopic wards, dampening runes, and star charts)
    • High-Tension Crystal Channeling Rod (brass-and-quartz rod to regulate mana draw from the Tier 5 crystal)
    • Geothermal Shock-Quenching Vat (filled with mineral-dense brine to freeze the physical form while anchoring harmonic enchantments)
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Master Metallurgy and Artificing: Minimum skill level 10 (base 5 plus 5 for Tier 5 synthesis)
    • Lapidary Arts and Gemcutting: Minimum skill level 10
    • Arcane Rune Inscription: Minimum skill level 10
    • Alchemical Distillation and Reagent Binding: Minimum skill level 10
    • Mind’s Eye Deep Focus (active perception discipline to harmonize the competing mental, kinetic, and radiant auras)
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Regulate the artisan workshop’s steam conduits, ensuring the elemental fire and water chambers maintain equal pressure to produce a stable, vibration-free environment.
    • Secure the Tier 5 Magic Crystal beneath the forge hearth, seating the brass-and-quartz channeling rod to draw a continuous, low-frequency current of pure mana into the central work basin.
    • Deposit the five sacrifice relics into the ceramic crucible: the silver circlet, the thorn paste, the quiet elixir, the star-shield, and the nickel abacus sleeve.
    • Vent pressurized elemental steam through the crucible, softening the metallic alloys, dissolving the herbal extracts, and breaking down the disparate physical forms into a unified alchemical slurry while the channeling rod prevents elemental dispersion.
    • Introduce the refined xyronium billets, industrial nickel, and botanical stabilizing fluids into the crucible, blending the mixture with a glass stirring rod until the metal, glass, and plant matter fuse into a seamless, starlight-flecked alloy.
    • Transfer the cooling ingot to the steam-driven lathe; turn, bore, and hammer the alloy into a single, articulated cranial chassis, drawing out curved cheek-guards sculpted with barbed thorn motifs and an integrated brow-shield.
    • Roll a d20 to determine the integrity of the fusion: a result of 2 through 19 confirms a stable Tier 5 synthesis; a roll of 20 imparts an unintended harmonic resonance; a roll of 1 results in a total containment failure that destroys all raw components.
    • Using the jeweler’s loupe and diamond-tipped needles, cut three parallel, frictionless grooves along the upper rim of the chassis, slide the ten amber glass beads onto the tracks, and braze the retaining pins with nickel solder.
    • Mount the clear quartz cabochon directly above the nasal bridge, setting it into an insulated silver bezel charged with the essence of the dissolved tranquil elixir.
    • Inscribe the constellations of the first dawn and ancient wards of mental fortitude along the brow-shield and inner band, brushing the engraved lines with the silver-ink flux and powdered riverstone.
    • Submerge the completed cranial armature into the geothermal brine vat for exactly three minutes, shock-tempering the metal and permanently locking the radiant, calculating, and illusory enchantments into an indivisible physical object.
    • Withdraw the finished Aegis-Circlet of the Astral Ledger 814 from the brine, dry its surfaces, verify the alignment of its mental wards and bead tracks through the Mind’s Eye, and prepare the singular headwear item for its one-minute attunement ritual under the open sky.

Head-Buckler, Great Ledger of Dead Kings, and Hand That Counted Bramble

In the early count of days, when the white face of Gaialilith had not yet carved all seventy and three dry lands out of the salty mud, the night was not empty as men see it now. In that turning of the world, the dead did not lie down in their ditch-skins; they walked about upon the roads, asking the living for soup, for dried fish, and for the coins that had been put under their tongues when the breath stopped.

There was in the high spires of the ledger-houses a clerk-woman whose name-mark in the split horn is set down as Vael-Nomi, which the mouth of our grandfather’s fathers translates as She Who Subtracts the Rust. She was a creature with a stiff tail of the salt-plains, which had been bound in the rings of pale nickel so that it went clitter-clack upon the counting-slabs, telling whether a bushel of meal had eight pecks or nine before the buyer had taken his thumb from the basket.

Beside her dwelt an old carver of ditch-salts, named Oron of the Cold Well, who had in his box three things of very small honor: a silver hoop that made the forehead cold like winter cabbage, a pot of green grease squeezed from the dog-briar that makes an eye see two trees where only one is standing, and a little gourd of the milky well-sweat of the mountain-moths, which causes the crying heart to become flat as an iron pan.

Now the kings of the lower bone-trenches were at that season marching upward through the mist. The tablets of the split horn name their captain The Duke of the Rotten Ribs. This duke had gathered eleven thousand corpses of the old cattle-wars, whose teeth were filled with green earth. He came with wagons made of dry leg-bones to carry away the gold of the high houses, and he sent a great horn-shout against the brass gates: “You who sit upon the stools of interest and carry the ink-horns in your sashes! The dead have slept three hundred turnings without porridge! Now we will eat your silver, and your fat daughters shall churn our sour milk, and no stone of your banks shall rest upon its brother!”

The city-judges wept into their sleeves until their cuffs were heavy with eye-water. They sent out four hundred spearmen who wore coats of red boiled hide, but when the spearmen saw the dead men walking without bellies, their livers melted like fat in a skillet; they dropped their bronze poles and ran into the high pig-sties, crying that the sky had broken its teeth.

Then the master of the weigh-scales, having given seven dried roots to the temple-women, spoke: “Let the woman of the clicking tail go to the wall. Let her take the old man’s cabbage-hoop and the little gourd of moth-milk. If she does not balance the tally with the Duke of the Ribs, we shall all be eaten by noon, and there will be no one to write the sum upon the potsherd.”

Vael-Nomi did not run to the pig-sties. She sat before the steam-cauldron where the red elemental fire was locked inside the brass water-chest, whistling through the copper joints like an angry gander. She took from her neck the holy buckler of star-iron, which had fallen from the belly of a dead sun before the moon had a mother, and which the gray monks called The Star-Spit Plate.

She called to the old carver: “A skull has four corners, but a ledger has only two lines: the thing that came in, and the thing that went out. The dead are coming because they think we owe them three turnings of grain. If I fight them with a spear, I am only one point against eleven thousand teeth. We must melt the shield that burns with star-fat, and the hoop of cold thoughts, and the counting-tail of industrial rings, and the briar-grease, so that the head may become an iron wall that has an abacus upon its crown.”

They threw the five things into the clay belly of the furnace. It was not blown with goat-skin bellows, but with the heavy white breath that jumps when the boiling water is squeezed through a pin-hole under five weights of lead. When the metal became soft like warm sheep-tallow, Vael-Nomi threw into the pot her own prehensile tail-sleeves, and ten beads of hard yellow tree-gum that had been cleared of all bubbles.

The translator notes here: The workshop became so quiet that the spider upon the rafter could be heard washing its legs.

The woman did not use a bronze hammer, but a stone rod dipped in river-brine. She beat the star-metal and the nickel-iron into a single cap that fit around the temples like an iron shoe upon an ox’s foot. Across the brow she hammered the little star-shield, no wider than a man’s flat palm, but carved with the seven stars that do not move when the world turns over. Along the top ledge she cut three straight gutters, and within them she locked the ten yellow beads of amber-gum, so that they slid without grease, going click-click-click whenever her eyebrows went up. In the middle of the front she cemented the clear stone of mountain-water that had drunk the moth-milk, and down the cheeks she drew the iron vines that were sharp like the thorns of the wild hedge.

When she placed the armature upon her ears, the ancient skin says: Her brain-house became like a stone cellar where no wind blows, and the stars of Gaialilith walked inside her nostrils.

She went down the nine hundred stairs to the water-gate alone. She carried no knife of bronze, nor an ash-wood bow. Her tail, which had been bare since the melting of the sleeves, hung behind her like a naked rope, but her head sat upon her neck like an anvil of gray starlight.

Before the gate stood the Duke of the Rotten Ribs, sitting upon a chariot made of seven dried bulls. His eyes were holes where beetles crawled, and behind him the eleven thousand dead men stood in the gray silt, their mouths open like dried ditches, smelling of pond-slime and dead grass.

“Where is the tribute of the seven houses?” cried the Duke, and the shout blew the dust from three threshing-floors. “Why do you send a woman with an iron saucepan upon her forehead to talk to the lords of the clay?”

Vael-Nomi did not drop her eyelids. Through the clear quartz upon her brow, the shouting of the dead duke did not enter her mind as terror. It entered only as a long string of crooked sums. She smelled neither the rotting flesh nor the swamp-grease, for the circlet breathed into her mouth the cold odor of crushed mint and the water that runs under winter ice.

She touched the ten amber beads upon the rim of her forehead.

The beads began to slide along their three gutters with a sound like a hail-storm falling upon a brass roof: snick-tock-clitter-snap. The yellow gum caught the white light of the moon, and as they moved, the woman’s mouth spoke without trembling: “You say eleven thousand dead men stand behind your bull-car. But I have counted their heels. There are ten thousand, eight hundred, and forty-two. Seven score fell into the peat-bog at the third crossing, and fifteen were eaten by the river-crabs because their thigh-bones were soft with ditch-fever. You have rounded up the fraction to make your terror fat.”

The dead men behind the duke stopped their groaning. Their dry ears, which had forgotten the speech of the market, caught the click-click of the amber beads. They looked at their own feet; they saw the wet mud; they began to remember the days when they carried baskets of onions to the quay, where two coppers were two coppers, and three were not four.

“What is this clicking upon your ears?” roared the Duke, lifting a heavy club of oak-wood studded with horse-teeth. “I will crack your skull-pot and take the beads for my necklace!”

He leaped down from the dried bulls and ran at her.

Then Vael-Nomi invoked the cheek-guards of the dog-briar. The iron vines along her jaw did not grow, but they threw out upon the stones a great cloud of gray needles and green shadows that had no weight. The Duke swung his heavy oak-club with all the strength of his dead ribs, but the club struck only a shadow of thorns that smelled of crushed dartleaf. The wood hit the cobbles with a dry clack, and the jarring broke his rotten wrist-joint into four splinters.

“The blow is not in the ledger,” said Vael-Nomi through the visor. “It has no balance.”

She tilted her brow forward toward the ten thousand dead.

The miniature star-shield in the center of her forehead woke up. It did not make a flame like a campfire, but a white, cold fury like the heart of a split comet that has fallen into a well. The light passed through the clear quartz cabochon, turning the starlight into a great sheet of milky water that ran out forty cubits across the silt.

Where the star-light touched the dead men, they did not burn with black smoke. The red maggots in their marrow dried into gray powder; their rotting skin became clean like river-shingle that has been washed seven summers in the torrent; their crooked jaws, which had been set for biting, closed into smooth smiles.

“The debt is finished,” cried the woman, and her tail swept the cobbles in an arc of perfect symmetry, grounding her flesh so that the great light did not throw her backward. “You were buried in the forty-second turning; your taxes were paid in dried peas by your grandchildren’s sons! Go down into the deep gravel where the earth does not remember your debts!”

The ten thousand dead looked upon the five-part stars carved in the xyronium crest. They looked at the neat amber beads that sat in their rows like good children upon a bench. The rage of their bones went out like a rush-light dropped into a milk-tub. One by one, they turned their heels from the high spires; they walked back down the silt-beds toward the quiet deep places, folding their dry hands over their ribs like men who have found their receipts after thirty years of litigation.

The Duke of the Rotten Ribs remained alone before the water-gate, his broken arm hanging by a sinew of dried pig-gut. He tried to speak the old curses of the sulfur-mines, but the clear stone upon Vael-Nomi’s forehead poured into his ears the great chant of the still pond. His rage became like a drop of ink in a barrel of spring water; it grew pale, it spread out, it became nothing at all. He sat down upon a mounting-block, looked at his broken knuckles, and began to weep small drops of gray sand.

“Why do you not beat me with an iron bar?” the Duke whispered, and the sound was like dry grass rubbing against a wall.

“An iron bar costs four nickels to hammer and two to reheat,” replied Vael-Nomi, her voice cold and level as a mason’s level-rule. “You are not worth six nickels of coal. Your sum is zero. Go into the mountain and sleep until the rock-lice count your teeth.”

She turned her back upon the dead lord. She walked up the nine hundred stairs to the city of the steam-boilers, the amber beads upon her brow softly clicking one, two, three, four with every pace she took, while the spectral thorns upon her shoulders faded back into the dark nickel frame like mist before the noon-bell.

The chief of the banking-houses met her at the high portcullis, holding out a plate of beaten silver containing thirty bags of electrum and a gold necklace as thick as a bull’s lead-rope.

“Take this, wise auditor,” said the chief, bowing his bald crown until his nose touched his knees. “Take the lordship of the eastern ledger, and sit in our council with a velvet cushion beneath your tail.”

Vael-Nomi took off the articulated crown. Her hair was damp with the sweat of the starlight, but her eyes were white, clear, and quiet, like two pebbles lying at the bottom of a cold well where no sheep have trampled.

“Keep your electrum for the coal-wagons, master,” she said, laying the heavy armature upon his silver dish so that it went thrummm through the metal like a harp-string. “A head that has looked through the star-shield sees that your gold is only yellow grease dug out of the dirt, and your electrum is only three parts deceit and seven parts trouble. Keep your ledgers straight, count your pecks without an iron thumb, and do not rob the graves of the cattle-wars, or the Duke will come back with a larger abacus than mine.”

She walked away into the lower alley where the washer-women beat the shirts upon the flat rocks. The ancient parchment says she took no more part in the great audits of the spire, but dwelt in a mud-hut by the salt-creek, where she used the five-part beads only to count the geese as they flew northward to the moon-country of Gaialilith.

The moral of the story is: The terror of the past is only a phantom that has forgotten its count; he who meets the storm with an empty heart, a clear rule, and an honest reckoning shall see the army of shadows melt into dry sand, while the loud sword breaks upon its own unmeasured pride.

  • Mind of Unbroken Glass: The wearer’s soul is anchored in absolute tranquility. The wearer gains the Strong-minded Talent and a +30% bonus to Cool Tests to resist Witchcraft, psychic assault, and Chaos corruption.
  • Kinetic Tally: The frictionless amber beads balance the body’s weight through mechanical symmetry, granting the Catfall Talent and a +20% bonus to Athletics Tests to maintain footing.
  • Brier-Weave Misdirection: Shifting illusory thorns distort the wearer’s profile, granting a +20% bonus to Stealth Tests in dim light or forest cover.

Active Abilities

  • Audit of Structural Ruin (Action): The wearer snaps the amber beads against the nickel frame to isolate stress fractures in an adjacent gate, building, or armored foe. The next melee or missile strike against that target completely ignores all Armour Points and increases damage by +4.
  • Aura of the Still Pond (Action): The central quartz cabochon radiates absolute calm. Every living enemy within 12 yards must pass a Very Hard (-30) Cool Test or become completely placid, dropping their weapons and refusing to engage in violence for 1d10 rounds until struck.
  • Cosmic Radiant Pulse (Action): The brow-plate erupts with celestial fire. Treat this as a magical blast dealing +SB + 10 Damage (Flaming Quality) targeting all enemies within an 8-yard radius; Daemons and Undead suffer a critical hit on any successful roll.
  • Master Tally (Action): The wearer snaps the beads to instantly count, weigh, and calculate the exact bullion value of all cargo, weapons, and coins within 20 yards, granting an immediate +30% bonus to subsequent Haggle and Evaluate Tests.
