Lore

Across the 73 sovereign island nations of Saṃsāra, high navigational orders and elemental inquisitors long sought a sovereign conduit capable of binding the wild atmosphere, precognitive foresight, and fraternal unity into a singular armature. In a sanctum powered by balanced closed-circuit elemental steam conduits combining fire and water, master artificers gathered five Tier 1 sacrifices: the four-gemmed woven wraps of the element-shapers, the dense bone and scale bludgeon of the thunder-beast, the shimmering essence-feathers of the sanctum’s ethereal raptor, the bronze-and-quartz bond compass of the dream-walkers, and the silver precognitive powders of the mantis. Anchored to a massive Tier 5 crystalline mana battery and sealed under the supreme celestial grace of the moon-goddess Gaialilith, the five physical matrices collapsed into an indivisible left-hand war-gauntlet. The resulting relic harmonizes elemental mastery, devastating concussive force, aerial stealth, navigational divination, and collective warding into an unyielding instrument of sovereign authority.

Description

An articulated, elbow-length left-arm war-gauntlet constructed from interlocking plates of dracoraptoris bone, hardened reptilian scales, and cold-hammered bronze, lined internally with supple enchanted spider-silk. Across the knuckles sit four elemental gemstones—a fire ruby, water sapphire, earth emerald, and air diamond—each pulsing with primal currents. Built directly into the dorsal vambrace is a polished bronze compass housing a floating dreamtime needle poised above an interlinked-hands quartz cabochon that emits a steady azure and emerald glow. Fine whisperwind down and silver mantis-wing dust are sealed into the joint filigree, causing the armor to shimmer between physical density and translucent mist while releasing a faint, grounding aroma of dried lavender, garden sage, and rain-cleansed ozone.

Multiple Passives Magic

  • Aura of Resonant Camaraderie: The dorsal compass projects a continuous 20-foot field of harmonic protection. The wearer and all conscious allies within the radius gain a +2 bonus to Armor Check and complete immunity to fear, intimidation, and panic effects as alchemical bonds steady their resolve.
  • Elemental Ward & Absorption: The knuckle gems attune to incoming environmental and spell hazards. The wearer gains innate high-grade resistance against fire, cold, lightning, and bludgeoning damage, absorbing ambient kinetic and elemental energy directly into the gauntlet’s internal reservoir.
  • Ethereal Zephyr Shroud: The embedded whisperwind feathers wrap the wearer’s silhouette in localized mist and shifting air currents. The wearer moves in absolute silence, ignores difficult terrain caused by wind, rubble, or mud, and gains a +5 bonus to stealth checks in fog, rain, or low-light conditions.
  • Temporal Pre-Cognizance: Faint precognitive echoes from the mantis-dust sharpen the wearer’s sensory reflexes. The wearer cannot be surprised or flanked by physical ambushes, intuitively perceiving incoming attack trajectories moments before they manifest.

Multiple Active Magics

  • Thunderous Concussive Strike (1 Action): Channeling the heavy dracoraptoris bone plating, the wearer delivers a devastating melee blow. On a successful strike, the gauntlet detonates a concussive thunderclap that inflicts heavy bludgeoning damage, knocks the primary target and all adjacent hostile enemies prone, and repels them 15 feet.
  • Cataclysmic Elemental Fusion (1 Action): The wearer gestures with the knuckle gems, unleashing a fused elemental torrent in a 30-foot cone (such as a scalding steam barrage combining fire and water, or a razor-sharp stone hail wrapped in gale-force winds), scorching, shredding, and disorienting all foes in the area.
  • Whispering Mist Flight (1 Action): The wearer dissolves their physical form into shimmering mist and wind for 1 minute. While in this state, the wearer gains free-flight movement at double their normal walking speed, can pass through keyholes, grates, and small cracks, and remains immune to non-magical physical restraints.
  • Wayfinder’s Dreamtime Nexus (1 Action): The dorsal compass needle aligns with invisible ley-lines, projecting an emerald beacon that reveals the shortest, safest path to a designated destination, hidden vault, or ally within a 7-mile radius, highlighting all concealed traps, illusory barriers, and structural hazards along the route.
  • Smoke of the Future Tapestry (1 Action): The gauntlet vents a cloud of silver incense smoke around the wearer’s eyes, granting a vivid precognitive vision of the immediate future (spanning the next 3 rounds). The wearer learns the exact positioning, planned attacks, and tactical intentions of all adversaries within 60 feet, granting absolute precision on follow-up strikes and defenses.

Targeting, Disabling, and Repairing Tempest-Bound Gauntlet of the Zephyr Oracle 419

  • Targeting and Disabling Thresholds:
    • To target the gauntlet directly while it is equipped on an avatar’s forearm, the attacker must declare a targeted strike against the item, attempting to overcome a specific defensive barrier rather than basic body evasion.
    • The threshold to hit the gauntlet equals the wearer avatar’s total Armor Check plus the avatar’s tier level (5) plus the roll of the avatar’s tier dice (5d12) plus the item’s own native Armor Check modifier (+3).
    • If a declared targeted strike successfully connects, the gauntlet is immediately disabled and unattuned, causing all four elemental conduits, the compass needle, precognitive smoke, unity auras, and ethereal flight enchantments to shut down instantly.
    • Once the item is disabled or unattuned, any subsequent targeted attacks deal direct damage to the gauntlet’s hit point pool.
    • The gauntlet has a total hit point capacity equal to the avatar’s maximum hit points plus 50 (calculated as base resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 5).
    • The gauntlet enters a physically broken state whenever it sustains targeted damage equal to or exceeding half of its total hit point pool:

Avatar Maximum Hit Points + 50

    • Upon entering a broken state, the bone-and-scale plates fracture, the bronze compass bezel warps, the knuckle gemstones crack, and the enchantments remain completely inert, preventing attunement or magical access until restored.
    • If targeted attacks reduce the gauntlet’s hit points to zero, the item is completely destroyed, crumbling into worthless pulverized bone meal, scorched scale flakes, warped bronze slag, and crushed glass-gem dust.
  • Repair Procedures:
    • The gauntlet cannot naturally mend or regenerate lost hit points over rests, downtime, or sleep; every point of structural and magical damage requires deliberate artisan intervention.
    • While broken, the gauntlet cannot be worn for magical protection or attuned; its entire hit point pool must be restored to maximum before any passive or active properties can be re-engaged.
    • Repairing the relic demands an artisan with master proficiencies in Metallurgy, Leatherworking, Arcane Gemsetting, and Artificing at a minimum skill level of 10 (base 5 plus 5 for Tier 5).
    • The repair work must take place within an artisan workshop fitted with closed-circuit steam conduits combining elemental fire and elemental water, a jeweler’s lapidary micro-brazier, and an alchemical resonance basin.
    • Mending requires matching master-grade reagents: refined alchemical bronze flux, a replacement shaving of dracoraptoris bone, a dram of celestial ink, and a stabilizing vial of botanical dew to reseal the ethereal mantis-and-feather filigree.
    • Once the plates are brazed, the knuckle gems realigned, the quartz compass needle reseated, and its hit points restored to full, the avatar must perform a standard one-minute attunement ritual under open sky or starlight to reactivate the gauntlet’s enchantments.

Acquisition and Commerce of the Tempest-Bound Gauntlet of the Zephyr Oracle 419

  • Methods of Acquisition:
    • Master Artificing Consolidation: An artisan possessing master proficiencies in Metallurgy, Leatherworking, Arcane Gemsetting, and Artificing at skill level 10 can synthesize the five prerequisite Tier 1 components: Gloves of Elemental Manipulation, Thunderous Tail Club, Whisperwinds 2 (feathers/essence), Dreambound Unity Compass 927, and Ethereal Sight Incense. The consolidation demands an advanced workshop drawing balanced steam from closed-circuit fire and water chambers, a wagon-sized Tier 5 magic crystal to anchor the mana matrix, payment of the 15% consolidation fee based on the combined value of the components, and a successful synthesis check avoiding a roll of 1 on a d20.
    • Exploration of High-Altitude Cloud Temples: The relic can be recovered from the sealed sanctums of ancient weather-monks or sky-oracles perched on the cloud-veiled peaks of the 73 island nations. These wind-sheared monasteries protect their innermost reliquaries behind tempest barriers, deceptive mist labyrinths, and elemental pressure locks requiring mastery over wind and stone.
    • Subduing a Rogue Sky-Marshal or Tempest Inquisitor: An avatar can wrest the gauntlet from a high-tier marshal or rogue storm-seer who wields it in battle. Because the equipment of fallen champions usually disintegrates into free-floating elemental sparks upon death, the gauntlet must be secured through a declared disarm maneuver, precision severing of the arm piece, or forced diplomatic surrender before the wearer perishes.
    • Sovereign Guild Elevation: The united Grand Admiralty of the Sky-Flotillas and the High Elemental Conclave may award this gauntlet to an avatar who averts a cataclysmic aerial storm, guides a lost exploratory fleet through uncharted sky-rifts, or defeats an elder elemental behemoth threatening multiple sovereign island nations.
  • Commercial Venues, Transaction Methods, and Costs:
    • The Sky-Harbor Sovereign Vault-Bourse:
      • Type of Shop: A fortified mercantile citadel situated on the grand landing decks of an island capital’s highest mooring spire. The establishment features brass-reinforced bulkheads, glass display columns insulated with elemental dampeners, and steam-driven accounting tickers logging trade movements across the islands.
      • How It Is Bought and Sold: Access is restricted to high-tier explorers, fleet captains, and certified guild arbiters. The vault-master inspects the fluidity of the dreamtime needle, the resonance of the four knuckle gemstones, and the structural density of the bone plates using runic loupes. Transactions are settled strictly through registered World Bank transfers to comply with sovereign anti-counterfeiting laws, subject to the standard 1% banking fee.
      • Cost to Purchase: 110 Rhodium coins (equivalent to 1,100 Platinum or 11,000 Gold).
      • Value if Sold: 52 to 55 Rhodium coins credited directly into the seller’s World Bank ledger.
    • The High-Peak Lapidary Observatory:

      • Type of Shop: An exclusive, map-lined chamber inside an ancient maritime-astronomy guildhall, smelling of rich vellum, pipe leaf, and sage. Long brass tables are covered in celestial charts and navigational astrolabes.
      • How It Is Bought and Sold: The guild strictly requires proof of honorable exploratory service or a high-ranking recommendation from a chartered trade guild. The guildmaster conducts a trial by attunement, requiring the buyer to activate the compass needle and project an accurate navigational path through local sea-rifts before finalizing the trade. Payment is processed in physical bullion or sovereign land charters.
      • Cost to Purchase: 115 Rhodium coins (commanding a premium due to the artifact’s unparalleled navigational and group-warding utility).
      • Value if Sold: 55 to 58 Rhodium coins deposited into an institutional guild credit account.
    • The Under-Dock Smuggler’s Enclave:
      • Type of Shop: A covert, dimly lit warehouse tucked beneath the damp timbers of a pirate haven’s deep-water docks, concealed behind a high-pressure steam vent that scalds uninvited intruders.
      • How It Is Bought and Sold: The clandestine broker specializes in unsanctioned military arcanum, black-market monster parts, and unregistered relics. No questions of previous ownership or provenance are recorded, transactions bypass the World Bank, and payment must be made in heavy, physical bullion or raw uncut platinum nuggets.
      • Cost to Purchase: 130 to 145 Rhodium coins (heavily marked up due to the danger of trafficking unregistered Tier 5 war artifacts).
      • Value if Sold: 60 to 65 Rhodium coins in physical, uncataloged coin, provided the seller has the physical strength and security to transport the heavy strongboxes away from the harbor.

Tactical Application and Environmental Roleplay of the Tempest-Bound Gauntlet of the Zephyr Oracle 419

  • High-Altitude Cloud Spires, Sky-Bridges, and Mooring Decks:
    • Offensive Tactics:
      • In skirmishes across narrow aerial catwalks or open airship decks, the wielder invokes Whispering Mist Flight to dissolve into swirling wind and mist, bypassing defensive barricades and flying behind hostile line formations at double speed.
      • Against entrenched marksmen or skiff boarding parties, the wielder detonates Thunderous Concussive Strike against the metal deck; the bone-scale fist unleashes a deafening sonic wave that knocks the entire boarding party prone and repels them 15 feet toward the open edge.
      • When pursuing aerial raiders through cloud banks, the user triggers Smoke of the Future Tapestry, exhaling silver incense that reveals the flight vectors and ambush intentions of hostile fliers over the next three rounds.
    • Defensive Tactics:
      • While crossing gale-swept gangplanks suspended miles above the ocean, the Ethereal Zephyr Shroud allows the wearer to completely ignore atmospheric buffeting and adverse crosswinds, maintaining effortless footing.
      • If hostile wind-callers attempt to throw the vanguard into the abyss with localized gale blasts, the knuckle gems absorb the storm turbulence through Elemental Ward & Absorption, turning the kinetic impact into harmless energy.
      • The integrated dorsal compass projects the Aura of Resonant Camaraderie across a 20-foot radius, granting all allies on the exposed bridge an Armor Check bonus and total immunity to fear or vertigo as they gaze down into the empty sky.
  • Subterranean Catacombs, Ancient Mines, and Deep Caves:
    • Offensive Tactics:
      • In cramped, lightless mining shafts or burial tunnels, the wearer gestures with the four knuckle gems to launch Cataclysmic Elemental Fusion, filling a 30-foot cone with a scalding high-pressure steam blast that cooks entrenched burrowing horrors and scours barricades clean.
      • To dislodge cave-dwelling ambushes or armored bone-beasts clinging to the ceiling, the wielder delivers a Thunderous Concussive Strike into the stone floor; the resulting concussive shockwave reverberates through the bedrock, causing stalactites to drop onto enemy formations while staggering their line.
      • When subterranean labyrinths loop endlessly into blind pockets, the Wayfinder’s Dreamtime Nexus aligns its floating needle with regional ley-lines, projecting an emerald trail along the stone floor that leads directly to the primary vault while highlighting concealed pressure plates and pit traps.
    • Defensive Tactics:
      • In narrow cavern tunnels where monstrous roars and despair-auras echo off damp rock, the Aura of Resonant Camaraderie anchors the minds of party members, banishing supernatural panic and keeping weapon hands steady.
      • If toxic gas pockets, stale air, or suffocating smoke choke a collapsed tunnel, the wearer commands the air gem to circulate a continuous pocket of fresh, rain-scented oxygen around the group.
      • When heavy rockfalls or cave-ins threaten to seal the vanguard in a dead end, the wearer triggers Whispering Mist Flight, drifting effortlessly through fissures and grates to reach the other side and clear the blockage.
  • Dense Enchanted Glades, Swamps, and Primordial Jungles:
    • Offensive Tactics:
      • Stalking rival war-bands or territorial apex predators through thick bogs, the wearer utilizes the Ethereal Zephyr Shroud to advance through tangled briars and knee-deep mud without snapping twigs, leaving footprints, or producing sound.
      • Engaging evasive, camouflage-reliant forest hunters, the wielder burns a pinch of silver dust via Smoke of the Future Tapestry; the precognitive haze lays bare every trap, snare, and lunging ambush moments before the predators strike, allowing the wielder to intercept them mid-pounce.
      • Against packs of giant predators, the wearer unleashes Cataclysmic Elemental Fusion in the form of a sweeping storm of razor-sharp stone shards wrapped in shearing gale-force winds, lacerating natural armor and carving wide lanes through the dense vegetation.
    • Defensive Tactics:
      • When surrounded by aggressive apex predators or territorial swamp serpents, the dorsal compass projects its grounding lavender-and-sage scent, calming the party’s racing heartbeats while the unity field shields them against venomous spitting strikes and crushing blows.
      • If territorial shamans summon torrential downpours or bog floods to drown the company, the water sapphire effortlessly manipulates the rising waters, parting the mire and establishing a dry, stable perimeter.
      • In thick swamp mists or spore-choked hollows, the Ethereal Zephyr Shroud blends the wearer seamlessly into the natural fog, turning the vanguard invisible to thermal, physical, and ordinary visual senses.
  • Volcanic Calderas, Steam Foundries, and Smelting Complexes:
    • Offensive Tactics:
      • In combat among roaring blast furnaces and clanking machinery, the wearer utilizes the earth emerald to rip molten slag or jagged iron debris from the floor, hurling it alongside high-pressure wind blasts to pierce armored clockwork sentries.
      • Against heavy steam golems and reinforced blast doors, the wearer executes a Thunderous Concussive Strike directly against the machine’s central housing; the bone-and-scale impact fractures pressure valves, breaks gear teeth, and sends the construct crashing to the ground.
      • The wielder uses Cataclysmic Elemental Fusion to combine ambient furnace heat with water reserves, generating a blinding steam veil that superheats enemy plating while granting cover for allies to maneuver.
    • Defensive Tactics:
      • In zones of extreme heat, volcanic vents, or industrial flame leaks, the Elemental Ward & Absorption passive fully shields the wielder’s arm and torso from searing burns, drawing the ambient thermal energy into the gauntlet’s reservoir.
      • When hostile artificers trigger emergency boiler discharges or scald-traps, the wielder commands the fire and water gems to dissipate the boiling vapor, preventing catastrophic harm to nearby companions.
      • Amid the deafening clamor of steam hammers and metal stamping presses, the Temporal Pre-Cognizance passive warns the wearer of failing structural joints, falling gantries, or sudden machinery blowouts before they occur.
  • Open Arid Deserts and Shifting Dune Basins:
    • Offensive Tactics:
      • When confronting nomadic dune raiders or massive sand wyrms, the wielder slams the gauntlet into the sand, executing a Thunderous Concussive Strike that turns the dune face into a churning, outward-rippling tidal wave of stone and grit, knocking mounted riders from their beasts.
      • Over vast, trackless sand wastes with no visible landmarks, the wearer activates the Wayfinder’s Dreamtime Nexus; the floating needle cuts through deceptive desert mirages, laying out a glowing emerald highway that bypasses quicksand pockets and hidden sinkholes for seven miles.
      • In open desert skirmishes, the wearer unleashes a localized sandstorm via Cataclysmic Elemental Fusion, blinding enemy archers while scouring exposed skin with gale-driven quartz particles.
    • Defensive Tactics:
      • When scorching sandstorms and heat hazes distort the senses, the Aura of Resonant Camaraderie prevents dehydration-induced delirium, keeping the entire expedition focused, unified, and resilient against exhaustion.
      • While traversing shifting dunes, scree fields, or crumbling sand shelves, the Ethereal Zephyr Shroud grants effortless, weightless movement, allowing the wearer to run across loose sand without sinking or triggering avalanches.
      • If cornered in an open basin by overwhelming numbers, the wearer invokes Whispering Mist Flight to rise above the boiling sand and scout enemy encirclements, completely untouchable by physical spears and non-magical missile fire.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Sight: The four knuckle gemstones flare simultaneously with vivid primary colors—crimson embers dance across the ruby, spiraling azure droplets cling to the sapphire, dense emerald dust crusts the emerald, and a sharp, crystalline vortex of white light spins around the diamond. Looking down at the forearm, the bronze compass bezel pulses with concentric rings of teal and viridian light as the floating dreamtime needle spins rapidly before locking onto an unseen ley-line. A fine, silvery mist swirls outward from the seams of the dracoraptoris bone scales, causing the world just beyond arm’s reach to shimmer with faint afterimages.
    • Sound: A deep, resonant hum vibrates along the forearm bones, quickly joined by the rising, rushing whistle of a sudden wind vortex. Beneath the wind, a sharp, rhythmic percussion echoes through the arm—like distant rolling thunder combined with the faint, ethereal bird-trills of a hunting raptor and the soft, musical chime of suspended quartz.
    • Touch: The inner lining of enchanted spider-silk tightens gently against the skin, locking the gauntlet to the forearm like an extension of the skeletal system. A rapid sequence of temperatures ripples across the knuckles: sudden dry heat, biting chill, solid tectonic pressure, and a weightless breeze. A constant, comforting warmth blooms outward from the quartz cabochon over the wrist, sending a steady wave of vitality up the shoulder that banishes muscle tremors and joint stiffness.
    • Smell: The immediate airspace is cleared of all stale odors, replaced by a rich blend of drying garden sage, crushed mountain lavender, petrichor rising from sun-warmed earth, and a sharp, electrifying bite of fresh ozone.
    • Taste: A crisp, dry mineral flavor coats the tongue, reminiscent of inhaling fine slate dust just as a summer lightning storm strikes open rock.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Aura of the Unified Vanguard): The wearer perceives the life forces and emotional states of nearby companions as tangible, glowing silver threads connecting back to the wrist compass. The user feels the collective heartbeat of the party as a shared rhythm, intuitively knowing an ally’s spatial orientation and physical readiness without glancing their way.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Temporal Pre-Sight): A ghostly, transparent ripple appears across the immediate field of intent. The wearer perceives faint, translucent echoes of movement a split-second before physical actions occur—glimpsing the arc of an incoming arrow, the sudden shift of a predator’s balance, or the precise moment an enemy begins to drop their guard.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (Atmospheric Ley-Tension): The surrounding air pressure transforms into a tactile map in the mind. The wearer senses density variations, thermal updrafts, hidden hollows behind stone walls, and the subtle displacement caused by concealed or invisible entities moving through the air currents.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Sight: The gauntlet’s bone and scale plating shifts from dull reptilian ivory to an active, iridescent sheen. The four knuckle jewels project sharp beams of elemental light into the air, casting multicolored prismatic reflections off nearby surfaces. Across the forearm, the bronze compass erupts with a bright azure and jade halo, within which a miniature constellation of silver sparks drifts like burning incense. A low, translucent mist clings to the wearer’s left arm, blurring the physical edges of the gauntlet so that it seems partially phased between mist and solid matter.
    • Sound: Observers hear an immediate crack of atmospheric pressure, followed by a steady, low-frequency baritone drone that vibrates in the chest. A rushing breeze whips outward in a 20-foot ring, carrying an uncanny acoustic phenomenon where voices sound closer, clearer, and devoid of fear or trembling.
    • Touch: Anyone standing within 20 feet feels a sudden drop in ambient humidity as a cool, refreshing breeze rushes past their shoulders. The hairs on the back of the neck tingle from a mild static charge, while a sudden, distinct sensation of physical grounding and courage settles into the soles of their boots, dispelling dread.
    • Smell: Observers catch an invigorating wave of wild sage, rain-soaked earth, and clean mountain lightning cutting through ambient dungeon grime or smoke.
    • Extra-Sensory Perception (The Beacon of Inevitable Victory): Conscious allies looking toward the wearer experience an immediate, quiet surge of unshakeable solidarity. Doubts, cognitive fatigue, and panic evaporate, replaced by a tangible impression that an ancient elemental authority has taken the field, anchoring the vanguard’s defense.
  • Positives:
    • Grants supreme situational and temporal awareness, making ambushes, blind-side attacks, and sudden environmental traps virtually impossible to execute against the wearer.
    • The continuous protective aura instantly immunizes all nearby companions to supernatural fear, panic, and despair while reinforcing their armor profiles through shared kinetic resonance.
    • Seamlessly blends devastating concussive melee power with long-range multi-elemental control, effortless aerial maneuverability, and unerring navigational tracking.
    • Provides powerful passive damage absorption against all primary elemental types, converting dangerous incoming blast energies into internal charge.
  • Negatives:
    • The luminous flare of four elemental gemstones, the pulsing azure compass beacon, and the drifting halo of silver sparks make visual concealment completely impossible while the gauntlet is active, unless the wearer actively shifts into mist form.
    • The loud atmospheric crack, the low-frequency hum, and the distinct scent of ozone and burning herbs immediately alert nearby beasts and trackers with keen senses.
    • Processing the rapid influx of temporal echoes, elemental currents, and companions’ emotional states demands significant mental discipline; an unfocused avatar can experience momentary sensory glare when entering areas of severe elemental turbulence.
    • In tightly confined spaces, the concussive vibrations traveling through the bone and bronze chassis can transmit mild acoustic ringing into the wearer’s left ear during extended melee engagements.

Consolidation Rite of the Zephyr Oracle: Forging the Tempest-Bound Gauntlet 419

  • Items Merged:
  • Additional Materials Needed:
    • 1 Tier 5 Magic Crystal (a massive, wagon-sized crystalline mana accumulator that serves as the central containment sink during high-tier consolidation)
    • 4 pounds of refined alchemical bronze billets and cold-drawn industrial nickel wire (to cast the articulated dorsal vambrace, hinges, and compass housing)
    • 2 drams of celestial silver-ink flux and powdered riverstone (to inscribe calculation circuits, elemental conduits, and runic channels of fortitude)
    • 3 flasks of concentrated botanical and biological stabilizing agents (harvested via fluid collectors to bind the organic bone, scale plates, spider-silk, and mantis powder without decay)
    • 1 flawless clear quartz cabochon (to replace or reinforce the central binding gem beneath the compass needle)
    • 1 spool of enchanted spider-silk thread (spun under the light of the moon-goddess Gaialilith to line the interior chassis)
  • Tools Required:
    • Master Steam-Powered Forge and Lapidary Lathe (drawing pressurized elemental steam from balanced closed-circuit fire and water conduits)
    • High-Durability Ceramic Crucible and Scribing Basin (to break down the physical matrices of the sacrificial items without metal-on-metal contamination)
    • Diamond-Tipped Micro-Engraving Needles and Jeweler’s Loupe (for inscribing micro-runes, ley-line channels, and star charts)
    • High-Tension Crystal Channeling Rod (a brass-and-quartz rod to regulate mana draw from the Tier 5 crystal)
    • Geothermal Shock-Quenching Vat (filled with mineral-dense brine to freeze the physical form while anchoring harmonic enchantments)
  • Skill Requirements:
    • Master Metallurgy and Artificing: Skill level 10 (base 5 plus 5 for Tier 5 synthesis)
    • Arcane Gemsetting and Lapidary Arts: Skill level 10
    • Arcane Rune Inscription: Skill level 10
    • Alchemical Distillation and Reagent Binding: Skill level 10
    • Leatherworking and Exotic Bone-Carving: Skill level 10
    • Mind’s Eye Deep Focus (active perception discipline to harmonize the competing elemental, kinetic, temporal, and navigational matrices)
  • Crafting Steps:
    • Regulate the artisan workshop’s steam conduits, ensuring the elemental fire and elemental water pressure chambers maintain equal calibration to produce a stable, vibration-free environment.
    • Secure the Tier 5 Magic Crystal beneath the forge hearth and seat the brass-and-quartz channeling rod to draw a continuous, low-frequency current of pure mana into the central work basin.
    • Deposit the five sacrifice relics into the ceramic crucible: the silk elemental gloves with their four gemstones, the bone and scales of the thunderous tail club, the whisperwind feathers and talons, the bronze compass with its quartz core, and the silver mantis incense powder.
    • Vent pressurized elemental steam through the crucible, softening the dense reptilian bone, dissolving the herbal incense compounds, and reducing the disparate physical forms into a unified alchemical slurry while the channeling rod prevents elemental dispersion.
    • Introduce the refined alchemical bronze billets, nickel wire, and biological stabilizing agents into the crucible, blending the mixture with a glass stirring rod until the metal, bone, and mineral matrices fuse into a seamless, starlight-flecked alloy.
    • Transfer the cooling bone-metal composite to the steam-driven lathe; turn, bore, and hammer the material into an articulated, elbow-length left-arm war-gauntlet with overlapping dracoraptoris scale plates and an integrated dorsal vambrace.
    • Roll a d20 to determine the structural and magical integrity of the fusion: a result of 2 through 19 confirms a stable Tier 5 synthesis; a roll of 20 imparts an unintended harmonic resonance; a roll of 1 results in a total containment failure that destroys all raw components.
    • Using diamond-tipped micro-needles and a jeweler’s loupe, inscribe four recessed knuckle bezels across the dorsal knuckles; seat the recovered fire ruby, water sapphire, earth emerald, and air diamond, securing them with nickel prongs charged with silver-ink flux.
    • Mount the polished bronze compass housing directly upon the dorsal vambrace; suspend the dreamtime needle above the interlinked-hands quartz cabochon, and inscribe the surrounding rim with celestial unity runes.
    • Stitch the interior of the gauntlet with enchanted spider-silk thread treated with botanical dew, embedding the whisperwind down and silver mantis dust into the seam filigree to establish the ethereal mist shroud and temporal pre-cognizance channels.
    • Submerge the completed gauntlet into the geothermal brine vat for exactly three minutes, shock-tempering the bone-and-bronze chassis and permanently locking the elemental, concussive, navigational, and precognitive enchantments into an indivisible physical object.
    • Withdraw the finished Tempest-Bound Gauntlet of the Zephyr Oracle 419 from the vat, dry its surfaces, verify the alignment of its ley-line circuits through the Mind’s Eye, pay the mandatory 15% consolidation fee to the local regulatory guild, and prepare the item for its standard one-minute attunement under the open sky or starlight.

Cloud-Sleeve, Thunder-Bone, and Hand of Four Fires

In the first turn of the waters, when the great mother Gaialilith had not yet counted all seventy and three dry nests upon the big salt-puddle, the wind had no path, and the fire had no belly. In those days, men went about with soft elbows, and when the gray clouds threw down stones, the folk hid under dried bull-skins, weeping because their eyes could not see what would come to eat their broth upon the morrow.

There was in the high rock-place of the white towers a far-walker whose mark upon the split pot is set down as Jhor-Al, whom the mouths of our second grandfathers call He Who Tracks the Mist-Path. Beside him went a woman who pounded dry roots in a brass bowl, named Vi-Rena, whose hand knew how to braid two ropes into one rope so that neither strand could cry out from being alone.

Now there walked also upon the lower mud-roads an old man who had no teeth, named the Master of the Four Thumbs. This man had gathered four little colored rocks from the river-belly—one of red grease that caught fire when spit upon, one of blue glass that sweated ditch-water, one of green clay that smelled of dead cabbage-stalks, and one of white air-spit that had no weight in a dry basket. He had sewn these stones into the cuffs of a black silk shirt, but when he waved his arm at the wild geese, the wind only blew the shirt into his nose, and the river-bulls came and trampled his squash-patch.

In that season, the great lizard of the lower mud-shoals, whom the ancient skin calls The Big Tail with Teeth, broke through the reed-fences. His tail was thirty cubits of hard gray horn, studded with the teeth of dead horses, and whenever he struck the bank, the earth fell down into the river, and the steam-kettles of the living burst their brass bellies with a great whistle. Behind him flew the small fog-birds of the deep scrub, whose beaks went whirr-whirr like spinning-wheels, speaking with thirty voices at once, so that if a hunter walked toward the north, he found his feet standing in the south ditch, full of leeches.

The village-fathers sat upon their benches with ashes upon their foreheads. They had killed seven speckled pigs to the moon-mother Gaialilith, but the lizard continued to eat their barley-boats. Then the woman Vi-Rena spoke to the wanderer Jhor-Al: “A tail is good for breaking, but it has no eye. A compass has an eye, but it has no fist. The old man’s four stones have heat and wet, but they have no bone to sit upon. If we take the tail-bone of the lizard when he sleeps, and melt it in the brass kettle with the four river-pebbles, the white fog-feathers of the scrub-birds, and the silver dust of the big-jawed mantis that eats tomorrow’s flies, we shall have an iron arm that knows where the rain falls before the cloud has gathered its sheep.”

They went into the low gravel-beds while the moon-goddess hung low like a split melon. Jhor-Al carried a silver needle that floated in a pan of sage-water, pointing always to the place where the sky has no corners. Vi-Rena carried her mortar of gray riverstone, filled with three dried twilight-berries and the wing-meal of the green stalk-cutter.

When the lizard The Big Tail with Teeth lay sleeping upon a warm silt-bench, Jhor-Al took a rope made of three twisted bull-guts and threw it about the beast’s tail-joint. Vi-Rena blew the gray mantis-smoke into its great round nostrils. The smoke did not make the beast cough, but it caused its dreaming eye to turn inward; it saw its own bones walking into the cooking-pots of the seven islands, and in its terror it lashed its great club against the cliff. The stone broke, and the bone-club of the tail came away at the third knot, weeping black marrow upon the silt.

The translator notes here: The beast ran into the deep salt-water with only a stump, and the fish ate its grease until the second winter.

They carried the great tail-bone to the workshop where the elemental steam ran through copper pipes with two necks—one for the red boiling fire, and one for the white cold snow. They did not blow the coals with goat-skins, but turned the brass valves so that the two breaths wrestled inside the iron bell, making a scream like five thousand geese.

Into the pot they cast the things: First, the silk wrist-wraps with the four river-pebbles of fire, puddle-sweat, mud, and fog. Second, the thirty pounds of the lizard’s thunder-bone, with all its yellow scales that were hard like iron plates. Third, the down-feathers of the scrub-bird that had been caught in a horse-hair snare while it was trying to whistle like a dead grandmother. Fourth, the bronze saucer with the floating arrow and the little white stone cut like two clasped hands. Fifth, the pouch of silver dust that smelled of crushed mint and dry garden-leaves, which the mantis had shaken from its elbows before the dawn-bell.

The stone pot stayed red for four days and four turnings of the spit. The ancient writing says: The bone did not burn into black soot, nor did the bronze run out like tallow; they ate one another until the bone had a skin of yellow brass, and the metal had the marrow of the beast.

Vi-Rena took the stone tongs and drew the red mass out upon the anvil of cold riverstone. She beat it not with a smith’s iron hammer, but with a flat billet of xyronium dipped in the brine of mountain-wells. She curved it around the left arm of Jhor-Al, from the knuckles of his hand unto the hard bend of his elbow.

Across the four knuckles she set the four stones, but they were no longer dead river-pebbles; the red stone burned like a hot coal that has drunk goat-fat; the blue stone ran with clear drops that never fell to the floor; the green stone was heavy like a piece of the world’s bottom; and the white stone turned around and around like a little whirl-wind inside a glass bottle.

Upon the flat of the forearm she mounted the bronze disc of the way-shower. The arrow did not turn with the iron of the anvil; it hung in the air above the clasped-hands quartz, pointing through the granite wall toward the high place where the wind is born. Beneath the seams, Vi-Rena drew the threads of enchanted spider-cloth, rubbing the gray mantis-flour into every joint until the metal went soft like grease when the arm bent, but stiff like an anvil when the fist was closed.

When Jhor-Al pushed his fingers into the glove, the tablet says: His marrow became cold like river-pebbles, and the seven winds of Gaialilith walked through his ears with boots of brass.

Now the cloud-chiefs of the northern ridges were coming down with their sky-canoes. The parchment names their king The Captain of the Broken Mast. He had nine iron rafts that sailed upon the gray clouds, driven by the shouting of two hundred oarsmen who had brass rings through their noses. They dropped great stones with ropes upon the houses of the salt-burners, and their archers shot darts tipped with the poison of the yellow sea-wasp, crying: “Bring out your silver! Bring out your dried fish and your daughters who weave the green mats, or we will drop the mountain upon your chimneys!”

The village spearmen lay in the dung-channels, covering their faces with their shields, for the wind of the sky-canoes was so fierce that a man could not spit against it without blinding his own brother.

Jhor-Al went out upon the high sheep-pier alone. He carried no shield of ash-wood, nor did he have three spears in his belt. He wore only the left sleeve of bone and bronze, which went thrum-thrum-clack against his ribs like a loom working in the dark.

The Captain of the Broken Mast looked down from his high cloud-raft and laughed until the grease ran from his beard: “Do the mud-people send a one-armed weaver with a lizard’s tail on his wrist to catch our iron stones? Drop three boulders upon his crown and let the crabs have his liver!”

Three stones, each as heavy as four fat oxen, fell whistling from the gray belly of the raft.

Jhor-Al did not run into the ditch. He lifted his left fist toward the gray sky.

The white stone upon his fourth knuckle woke up. A great mouth of air opened above his fingers, blowing upward with the force of nine typhoons squeezed through an ox-horn. The falling boulders stopped in the middle of the air; they hung there like eggs in a bird’s nest, and then, with a screech that tore the shirts from the spearmen, the wind hurled the three rocks back into the cloud-raft, smashing its pine timbers into thousands of toothpicks.

The sky-canoes began to drift together in the gale, their ropes tangled like wet wool.

Then Jhor-Al touched the little bronze compass upon his wrist.

The arrow of dreamtime flared with the green light of the swamp-willow, and from the seams of the dracoraptoris scales there poured a great cloud of silver smoke that smelled of wild lavender and rain-crushed sage. The smoke did not blow away in the gale; it rose up around the cloud-rafts like a wall of milk.

Through the milk-smoke, the raiders could not see their own thumbs. When an archer drew his bow toward the pier, the smoke showed him the image of his own mother standing upon the water; when he loosed the shaft, it flew backward, pinning his own coat to the mast-tree.

“The air is full of old women and leeches!” screamed the raiders, throwing their oars into the mist.

Jhor-Al closed his fingers into a tight ball.

The red ruby and the blue sapphire upon his first and second knuckles began to boil together. He did not throw a spear; he threw only the breath of the two stones. A torrent of white, scalding elemental steam, three hundred paces long and forty paces wide, roared from his palm like the bursting of the great boiler in the central guild-house. The scalding cloud scoured the clouds from beneath the sky-canoes; their sails of bull-hide melted like pork-fat in a pan; the nine rafts lost their footing upon the mist and dropped like lead weights into the shallow mud of the outer reef, sticking fast in the blue clay up to their oar-ports.

The Captain of the Broken Mast crawled out upon a sand-spit, his hair scorched away and his brass rings full of mud. He had only a broken paddle in his fist. He saw Jhor-Al coming toward him across the water, not swimming, nor in a boat, but stepping upon the tops of the foam-heads as if the sea were an oak bench, for the down of the scrub-bird upon his heels made his body have no weight at all.

“Where are your three hundred spearmen?” gasped the Captain, coughing up salt-water and fried grass. “What army was inside that iron sleeve?”

Jhor-Al stood over him. The bronze compass upon his forearm was hummed with a low, sweet noise like bees in an apple-tree. The quartz stone of the clasped hands threw a circle of warm emerald light across the gray mud, and behind him the village-spearmen, who had dropped their fears like dirty shirts, came walking out of the dung-trenches with their heads held high, singing the ancient hymn of the moon-mother Gaialilith.

“There is no army in the sleeve, master of the rafts,” said Jhor-Al, his voice steady like an iron balance-beam. “There is only the lizard who knew how to strike, the bird who knew how to hide, the mantis who saw the morning before the cock crowed, the wanderer who knew the road, and the woman who knew that one man alone is only dog-meat for the wolves. We have put them all into one pot of balanced steam. Your nine rafts were only nine pieces of pine wood held together by fear, and when fear gets hot, it melts.”

He reached down with the bone-glove and lifted the Captain’s broken paddle from his hand. The four gemstones flared once with a little spark of yellow starlight, and the wood of the paddle burst into green willow-sprouts, growing three leaves and a little flower before the Captain could wipe the sand from his beard.

“Go back to your north-islands upon your heels,” said Jhor-Al. “Plant your squash, count your bushels with an honest stick, and tell your cloud-carvers that if they come again to the seventy and three islands, the sleeve of the five paths will be waiting at the water-gate, and its sum will not have a fraction left over.”

The ancient skin records that the Captain and his two hundred wet oarsmen walked northward through the low marshes, carrying their wounded upon litters of green reeds, and for forty summers no cloud-canoe cast its shadow across the sheep-piers of the living.

Jhor-Al and Vi-Rena did not sell the gauntlet for the gold of the high houses, nor did they set it upon a pole to be prayed to like an idol of salt. They locked it within a stone chest beneath the high navigational tower, where the closed-circuit steam whistles night and day through the copper throats of the boiler, waiting for the hour when the clouds shall forget their manners and the great lizard of the deep trenches shall try once more to bite the world’s tail.

The moral of the story is: The club that strikes without an eye only breaks its own wrist, and the eye that watches without an arm is trodden under the ox’s foot; only when the strong bone, the clear path, the quiet mind, and the hands that clasp are welded into one iron purpose can the little people of the reeds break the great kings of the storm.

  • Whispering Mist Flight (Major Action): The wearer dissolves into a vaporous silhouette for 3 Combat Turns. The character gains a flight movement rate equal to double their standard Sprint rate, slips through grates and narrow apertures, and becomes immune to mundane grappling and physical restraints.
  • Wayfinder’s Ley-Line Nexus (Minor Action): The dorsal compass links to local geographic resonance, pointing directly toward a chosen objective, extracted target, or safe house within 7 kilometers, granting a +2 dice pool bonus to Navigation and Tracking tests for 1 hour.
  • Smoke of the Future Tapestry (Minor Action): The gauntlet vents a cloud of silver incense. For the next 2 Combat Turns, the wearer gains +1 Major Action and adds +2 Edge to their Edge pool (ignoring the standard per-turn Edge gain limit) as trajectories are foreseen moments before impact.
