Necromancy 379 of the Ossuary Hoop Driver

Lore

  • In the flooded delta cities and subterranean storehouses of ancient Saṃsāra, water casks, fermentation vats, and grain barrels were prone to rapid rot and structural leakage from restless damp spirits.
  • Guild coopers formed compacts with the ghosts of master wrights, forging specialized cold-iron hoop-drivers and binding mortuary ash into the tool to allow the dead to guide the shaping of stave wood.
  • Cataloged under civic crafting index 379, this hand tool became the standard instrument for coopers tasked with assembling air-tight, water-tight, and spirit-sealed vessels for long voyages, funeral liquors, and hazardous alchemical storage.

Description

  • A sturdy, wedge-shaped cooper’s hoop-driver forged from dark bog-iron, featuring a broad striking head and a grooved concave bit designed to grip barrel hoops cleanly without slipping.
  • The dark iron is etched with interlocking stave-joint runes that faintly glow with cold violet light when pressed against dried timber or metal bands.
  • Set into the collar between the wedge and the ash-wood handle is a teardrop-cut purple catalytic crystal marked with the registration index ‘379’.
  • It gives off a subtle scent of charred white oak, aged spirits, pine pitch, and beeswax.

Tactical Roleplay Applications: Offensive and Defensive Utilization of Necromancy 379 Across Diverse Environments

  • Flooded Docks, River Wharves, and Shipboard Cargo Holds
    • Defensive Tactics & Roleplay: During a sudden storm or dockside sabotage where a hull bulkhead or water cask fractures, the cooper slams the driver against the split timber, invoking Hermetic Stave-Bond. The wood cinches together with a loud crack, sealing the breach against rushing water. When confronted by boarding pirates in the hold, the user activates Aura of the Sealing Gavel on a heavy cargo door, locking the raiders out and securing the crew behind reinforced, impenetrable oak.
    • Offensive Tactics & Roleplay: Fighting across slippery deck planks and stacked freight, the cooper hooks the grooved bit of the tool beneath the iron hoops of heavy rum barrels. With a single sharp leverage twist, the avatar snaps the tension bands, sending heavy wooden staves and hundreds of gallons of pressurized liquid bursting outward into advancing enemies, knocking them overboard.
  • Subterranean Crypts, Vaults, and Ancient Catacombs
    • Defensive Tactics & Roleplay: Pursued through crumbling stone passages by swarms of crypt vermin or restless ghouls, the cooper retreats into an embalming storage chamber. Striking the door frame with Aura of the Sealing Gavel, the tool fuses the aged wooden portal flush against the stone threshold, absorbing heavy blows from pursuing horrors while the party recovers.
    • Offensive Tactics & Roleplay: Facing reanimated skeletal constructs or armored funerary sentinels, the cooper utilizes Spiritual Inquest of the Timber and the weapon’s wedge-shaped striking face. Spotting the structural stress points in the enemies’ wooden shields or bone articulations, the user delivers heavy, piercing hammer-strikes that split shields cleanly in half and crush bone joints with the devastating impact of a hoop-driving mallet.
  • Bustling Brewery Districts, Taverns, and Alchemical Cellars
    • Defensive Tactics & Roleplay: Caught in a raging tavern brawl or an arson attack in a distillery cellar, the cooper uses the broad bog-iron wedge to parry incoming clubs and cleavers. Striking flammable aging vats with Hermetic Stave-Bond, the user instantly prevents volatile spirits from leaking onto open flames, protecting allies from catastrophic backdrafts.
    • Offensive Tactics & Roleplay: When cornered by guild enforcers in a tight cellar, the cooper drives the notched head into the bung-staves of pressurized fermentation vats, venting explosive jets of caustic, boiling mash into the faces of attackers. In close-quarters grappling, the user uses the grooved bit to catch enemy weapons, wrenching blades out of opponents’ hands with precise rotational leverage.
  • Frontier Caravans, Desert Depots, and Wagon Trains
    • Defensive Tactics & Roleplay: When raiders assault a night encampment, the cooper lines up supply wagons into a tight circle and strikes the wagon wheel hubs and tailgates with Aura of the Sealing Gavel. The wood and iron fittings lock into a rigid, interlocking palisade, creating an unyielding barricade that repels charging war-mounts and arrow fire.
    • Offensive Tactics & Roleplay: Counter-attacking bandit positions, the avatar identifies structural flaws in enemy wooden siege barricades using Spiritual Inquest of the Timber. Smashed directly into the key load-bearing timber seam, the driver unleashes a focused shockwave that shatters the barricade’s support pegs, causing the wooden rampart to collapse upon the defenders.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective:
    • Visual: The interlocking stave-joint runes etched into the dark bog-iron flare with an icy violet light. Wisps of pale purple luminescence crawl along the grooved bit and jump across iron hoops and timber seams like static discharge. The teardrop crystal at the collar pulses with a steady, rhythmic violet heartbeat.
    • Auditory: A deep, resonant thud-crack echoes through the user’s wrists, sounding like an iron mallet driving home on seasoned oak. Beneath that initial strike, a chorus of faint, synchronized groans of tightening wood fibers and ancient workshop murmurs hums softly in the user’s ears.
    • Tactile: The turned ash handle warms pleasantly, neutralizing tool vibrations, palm blisters, and wrist strain. The tool pulls slightly in the hand with magnetic precision, seating itself flush against hoop edges and seams without slipping.
    • Olfactory: A sharp, dry aroma of toasted white oak, charred pine pitch, warm beeswax, and aged brandy rises directly into the user’s nostrils, clearing out any foul stench of stagnant bilge water or mildew.
    • Gustatory: A dry, tannic taste reminiscent of aged oak-cask whiskey and resinous pine honey rests on the back of the palate, sharpening focus and craftsmanship instincts.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
      • Stress-Grain Sight: The wielder perceives glowing, translucent violet tension lines across wooden staves, planks, and metal bands, immediately revealing shear lines, weak rivets, and hidden structural fractures.
      • Hermetic Integrity Sense: Touching the driver to a container sends an intuitive mental pulse that instantly maps the vessel’s internal volume and flags any micro-leaks or air seepage.
      • Timber Memory Inquest: Pressing the bit to aged wood triggers fleeting psychic echoes of the felled tree’s lifespan, its seasoning period, and the nature of substances previously stored within its walls.
  • Observer’s Perspective:
    • Visual: The bog-iron driver glows along its carved channels with cold violet embers. When struck, a momentary ripple of violet light washes over the barrel or door frame, visibly drawing the wood staves and iron hoops together into a seamless fit.
    • Auditory: The hammer strikes sound unnervingly solid and deep, lacking the ringing metallic ping of loose hoops or misaligned iron. The wood settles with a single, sharp contraction.
    • Tactile: Observers standing close to the workpiece feel a sudden, dry draft of warm air and a subtle static prickle along their forearms as the spiritual seal locks into place.
    • Olfactory: A sudden, pleasant fragrance of toasted barrel staves and sweet distillery resins washes over the workspace, masking ambient shop grime or rot.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
      • Aura of Solid Immutability: Bystanders feel an instinctive psychological sensation of absolute barrier strength, recognizing that the sealed container or reinforced door has become solid and unyielding.
      • Necromantic Draft: Arcane observers detect a brief, subtle drop in ambient temperature around the tool’s collar, sensing the lingering spirits of old guild wrights guiding the iron.
  • Positives:
    • Eliminates physical strain, repetitive-motion fatigue, and glancing blow accidents during intensive coopering and repair work.
    • Instantly secures structural integrity, rendering containers leak-proof and doors pick-resistant without complex mechanical locks.
    • Reveals hidden compartments, contraband, or weakened timbers without requiring destructive dismantling.
  • Negatives:
    • The bright violet luminescence along the runes and bit makes discrete repairs or covert barricading impossible in dark environments.
    • The rich, toasted-oak aroma generated during activation spreads quickly, easily alerting nearby guards or tracking predators.
    • In strictly regulated ports or anti-necromantic settlements, the distinct spirit-channelling display can draw suspicion or accusations of illicit necromantic tampering.

Crafting Recipe: Necromancy 379 Ossuary Hoop-Driver

Materials Needed

  • 1 Billet of Bog-Iron (approx. 2.5 lbs): High in mineral density and naturally receptive to damp-warding and spirit-anchoring enchantments.
  • 1 Piece of Well-Seasoned Ash Wood (approx. 8 inches): Straight-grained and kiln-dried for the turned handle core.
  • 1 Ounce of Wright’s Mortuary Ash Flux: A specialized metallurgical flux blending pulverized bone ash of deceased master coopers, ground pine pitch, and calcined sea salt.
  • 1 Intact Tier 1 Purple Catalytic Crystal (Teardrop Cut): Pre-calibrated and inscribed to the necromantic coopering frequency index ‘379’.
  • 1 Cold-Iron Collar and Tang Ferrule: Machined to secure the handle junction, house the teardrop bezel, and ground the runic channels.
  • 1 Pint of Sealing Linseed Oil Infused with Charred Oak Bark: For tempering the striking face and finishing the ash handle.

Tools Required

  • Blacksmith’s forge, heavy anvil, cross-peen hammer, and hot sets
  • Chipping chisels, runic gravers, and contour files
  • Woodworking lathe, gouges, and rasps
  • Quenching trough and oil vat
  • Jeweler’s setting pliers, burnisher, and loupe
  • Oak test barrel with raw iron hoops for acoustic and alignment calibration

Skill Requirements

  • Blacksmithing / Toolmaking: Minimum Rank 1 (Apprentice level or higher; competent in wedge forging, hot chiseling, and differential tempering)
  • Necromancy or Technomantic Crafting: Minimum Rank 1 (Trained in mortuary ash binding, spirit-conduit etching, and catalytic resonance stabilization)
  • Coopering, Carpentry, or Woodworking: Minimum Rank 1 (Fundamental understanding of stave curvature, hoop tension, and wood grain dynamics)

Crafting Steps

  • Step 1: Forging the Wedge and Grooved Bit
    • Heat the bog-iron billet to a working orange heat in the forge and draw out a thick, tapered wedge profile.
    • Form the broad striking head on the poll end and hot-chisel the distinctive concave groove across the working bit to fit standard barrel hoop profiles.
    • Draw down a sturdy rectangular mounting tang extending from the base of the wedge.
  • Step 2: Engraving Runic Stave-Channels and Ash Fluxing
    • Anneal the iron wedge to soften the metal for detail work.
    • Use fine runic gravers to carve the interlocking stave-joint runes and spirit conduits along both lateral faces of the wedge.
    • Dust the carved channels with wright’s mortuary ash flux and heat the iron to fuse the ash directly into the engraved lines, sealing the civic registration index 379 near the tang base.
  • Step 3: Heat Treatment and Differential Tempering
    • Bring the bog-iron head to critical non-magnetic temperature.
    • Quench the grooved working bit in the oak-infused oil vat while leaving the striking poll to cool more slowly in air, preventing brittle fracture under repeated mallet strikes.
    • Temper the tool over forge coals until the bit displays a tough, spring-grey oxidation and the striking face reaches an impact-resistant straw temper.
  • Step 4: Handle Turning and Collar Assembly
    • Turn the seasoned ash wood blank on the lathe to create an ergonomic, flared handle, drilling a central channel to accept the driver’s tang.
    • Fit the cold-iron collar over the junction where the tang enters the wood.
    • Mount the teardrop-cut purple catalytic crystal into the collar bezel, burnishing the iron prongs down firmly to establish direct conductive contact with the tang.
    • Secure the handle with the cold-iron ferrule, seating the assembly with boiled linseed oil.
  • Step 5: Stave-Attunement and Hoop Calibration
    • Place the driver’s grooved bit against an iron hoop on the oak test barrel and strike the poll with a cooper’s mallet while channeling a Tier 1 necromantic pulse through the collar crystal.
    • Verify that the stave runes smolder with a steady violet glow, the crystal pulses in sync with the impact, the hoop seats flush against the timber without slipping, and a rich scent of toasted oak and pine pitch rises from the tool.

Iron Hoop-Wedge, Sinking Ship of Wine, and 379th Cask of Dead Wright

In the very old sea-days, when the islands were many and the great salt waters did not have names upon sheepskin scrolls, there was a great seaport town of the Red Mud named Oros. The masters of Oros did have seventy round ships made of pine timbers, which sailed across the deep water to bring yellow grain, salted pork-sides, and the thick black wine of the hill-vines to the great king who sat on the throne of river stones.

The Great Master of the Docks was a proud lord named Balthazar, who wore three gold chains upon his fat chest and did count every copper nail in his account-boxes. But Balthazar was a man of small wisdom, for he did say to his ship-builders: “Why do you buy the heavy white oak of the high mountains to make the wine casks? Why do you pay three silver pennies to the old coopers to drive the hoops with slow hammers? Go take the cheap green alder wood from the swamp, and take the thin iron from the pot-makers, and drive the bands fast with flat stones, so that we may fill forty extra ships before the autumn winds blow cold!”

The old wrights of the guild did shake their heads in the sawdust, but the soldiers of Balthazar did drive them out of the yards with stick-blows.

In the back alley near the fish-gutting ditch lived an old cooper named Kaelen, who was registered under the three-hundred-and-seventy-ninth clay tablet of the city makers. Kaelen had only one eye from an old iron splinter, and his knees were bent like crooked rowan limbs. His only treasure was an iron hoop-driver, forged from bog-metal that had lain forty winters inside the wet tomb of the first stave-carver of Oros.

In the middle throat of the iron wedge was set a purple water-stone, marked with the three-hundred-and-seventy-ninth mark of the grave-covenant, and its wooden handle was carved from an ash pole that had grown upon a king’s burial mound.

When the great fleet of seventy ships did leave the harbor of Oros, the round ship named The Great Bull was loaded with five hundred casks of the king’s sacrificial wine. Kaelen had been paid only one bowl of pea-broth to mend the small leaks in the lower belly of The Great Bull, and he was forced to ride in the dark hold with his iron wedge and a mallet of boxwood.

On the third night upon the salt waste, a great black wind did roar out of the northern clouds. The sea did rise up like three walking mountains of grey foam, and the waves did beat upon the pine sides of The Great Bull until the ship groaned like a dying ox.

The cheap green alder casks in the hold did begin to twist and groan. Because the wood was soft and green, the staves did warp like boiling cabbage leaves. The thin iron bands did snap with loud bangs like hunter bows, and the red wine did burst forth in great rivers, washing across the cargo planks and drowning the flour sacks in purple foam.

The ship-captain did run down the ladder with his lamp, weeping into his beard: “The five hundred casks are broken! The bilge is full of heavy wine! The ship’s head is sinking into the black foam, and the sea-monsters of the deep floor will eat our bones before the morning star arises!”

The sailors did throw the gold cups and the bronze anchors into the sea, but the ship did sink lower and lower until the green water came through the oar-holes.

Then old Kaelen did take his bog-iron hoop-driver from his leather belt. He did press the grooved bit of the tool against the split staves of the three-hundred-and-seventy-ninth cask, which had been broken in half by the rolling water.

He struck the poll of the iron wedge three times with his boxwood mallet.

A cold, bright violet lightning did jump out of the purple water-jewel at the collar. The runic stave-marks on the dark bog-iron did burn like purple fire on a wet peat-moss hearth. A great sweet smell of roasted mountain oak, dried beehive wax, and rich distilled wine did blow through the dark belly of the ship, driving away the stench of bilge slime and rotting fish.

Kaelen spoke the ancient words of the grave-wrights to the wet wood. When the iron wedge touched the broken alder staves, the timber did not crack or splinter, but did bend with a loud groan like iron turning to wax. The broken hoops did fly together as if drawn by a loadstone, and the seams of the five hundred casks did seal so tight that not a single drop of wine or a single bubble of air could pass between the wood.

More than this: Kaelen did run to the lower hull where a great pine plank had split open to the sea. He placed the grooved face of the tool against the leaking frame and struck the iron once more. The violet light did crawl across the ship’s ribs, and the outer planks did draw together with a sound like a great iron door closing in a stone wall. The ocean water could not enter, and the ship rose up from the trough of the waves like a dry duck feather upon a pond.

When the morning sun Helios did come over the water, The Great Bull sailed into the royal harbor alone, for the other sixty-nine ships of cheap green wood had broken their casks in the tempest and lay at the bottom of the salt weeds.

The great king of the river stones came down to the dock with sixty guards in silver mail. He saw that the five hundred casks of wine were dry on the outside and full to the bung-hole on the inside.

The proud lord Balthazar did kneel before the king, claiming that his own cleverness and cheap iron had saved the ship from the tempest.

The king said: “Let us open the casks to pour the sacred cup for the sun god.”

Balthazar took a common cooper’s chisel and struck the bung-stave of the three-hundred-and-seventy-ninth barrel. But because Balthazar had a greedy soul that cheated the dead wrights, the purple jewel upon the cask did turn black like soot, and the iron hoops did squeeze the cask with the force of ten stone crushers. The staves did not open, and the chisel of Balthazar did shatter into three sharp teeth that cut his own fingers.

Then Kaelen did step forward with his one good eye and his bog-iron driver. He touched the iron band with the grooved bit and whispered the peaceful name of the tomb-carver. The staves relaxed with a gentle sigh, the wooden bung did pop out cleanly into his palm, and a stream of sweet, clear wine poured forth into the king’s golden bowl, smelling of wild mountain grapes and ancient summer days.

The king ordered that Balthazar’s three gold chains be melted down to make nails for the city ditch, and he gave Kaelen a coat of scarlet wool and the high title of Master Wright of the Royal Fleet. But Kaelen took only his bread and his dry ash-handle, returning to his humble bench to teach the young apprentices how to honor the wood and the dead who first taught men how to hold the water.

Moral of the Story: A greedy man may build a hundred ships with cheap wood and boast of his savings, but when the great storm comes, only honest craft bound with respect for the wisdom of the past will keep the vessel from the bottom of the sea.
