Magic Crystals

Magic crystals grow in all magical beings. As the being grows, the crystal gets exponentially stronger. Most monsters or foes have magic crystals along with other items they drop when killed. Magic crystals are used as catalysts when crafting items. Depending on the skill level of the crafter, the time spent, the quality of the catalyst, and the recipe determines how many of the magic crystals are used.

Tier 1 magic crystals are about the size and weight of a coin.

Tier 2 magic crystals are about the size and weight of an apple.

Tier 3 magic crystals are about the size and weight of a basketball.

Tier 4 magic crystals are about the size and weight of a standard person.

Tier 5 magic crystals are about the size and weight of a covered wagon.

When a being dies and leaves behind a crystal that seems too big to have been in that being it is a mystery. No one understands how a large crystal can be in a being so small.

The quality of the crystal has more to do with how long it has been growing than the size of the crystal. Larger crystals can store more arcane power. Crystals of higher quality have more charges that can be used at the power level (size) of the crystal.

Crystals function as mystical batteries, replenishing their energy slowly from the surrounding arcane magic. Magic power can also be infused directly into a crystal by an avatar or NPC. After a crystal-powered item is utilized, its lifespan remains uncertain until a d100 is rolled, and a roll of one signifies the crystal’s shattering into a Crystal Shards of equivalent weight.
