Charm 582 of the Hearth Ember

Lore

  • In the rugged highland plateaus and volcanic valleys of the Fauresmith and Lupemban regions, traveling avatars and overland caravans historically relied on portable warding tokens to survive the freezing winds and feral night predators that stalked the untamed wilderness.
  • Nomadic camp-masters and trail cooks learned to bind small flecks of volcanic basalt, dried desert thyme, and pulverized Tier 1 magic crystalline cells into heat-treated copper trinkets to maintain camp warmth and keep foraging vermin away from food stores.
  • Charm 582 was fashioned during the Warming week of the month of Lathandus by a traveling pathfinder seeking to ensure that small expedition squads could establish a functional shelter regardless of damp weather or scarce dry timber.
  • Imbued with the protective warmth of the ancient Hearthlands, the charm acts as an enduring spark that responds to the camper’s intent, kindling damp kindling and deterring non-sentient scavengers.
  • Over centuries of frontier travel, these small charms became customary attachments fastened to the travel bracelets, neck chains, and kettle straps of explorers making long treks between distant island nations.

Description

  • The charm is a small, hollow-cast copper bauble roughly the size of a dried date, shaped in the stylized form of a curled flame with an open top suspension loop designed to slide onto existing necklaces, bracelets, or sash rings.
  • Pierced along the copper casing are tiny geometric vents that reveal an internal ceramic core glowing with a steady, ember-like orange and amber light.
  • Inscribed around the base rim of the flame are minute, flowing glyphs naming ancient gods of endurance and home-shelter, highlighted with a dusting of shimmering lapis lazuli and gold leaf.
  • To the touch, the metal remains pleasantly warm, never burning bare skin, and constantly radiates a faint, comforting aroma of burning sweet cedarwood, dried sage, and parched hearthstone ash.
  • When active magic is invoked, the interior ceramic core pulses with a bright, crackling crimson radiance, and tiny sparks of harmless magical warmth drift briefly through the filigree vents.

    • While daytime in the badlands brings oppressive heat, desert nights experience freezing temperature drops that can incapacitate unshielded travelers.
    • As the star Helios sinks below the horizon, the avatar activates the charm’s thermal buffering to maintain bodily equilibrium against the plummeting nighttime chill.
    • When pitching tents in open rocky ravines frequented by venomous vipers and scorpions, the charm’s passive deterrence field ensures that creeping desert pests stay well away from bedrolls and packed supplies.
    • The avatar initiates the Sanctuary of the Bedouin Hearth, ensuring that the campfire’s glow does not project across miles of open desert, thereby keeping the camp invisible to distant nomad raiders.
  • Offensive Roleplay Operations:
    • When cornered in a narrow red-rock gully by desert hyenas or raider scouts, the avatar utilizes the surrounding dry brush as tactical ammunition.
    • The avatar casts Cinder Burst of the Nomad directly into a patch of dried scrub behind the assailants, creating an immediate wall of roaring flame that cuts off their retreat.
    • Turning toward the enemy leader, the avatar shouts the vocal trigger phrase to launch a direct blast of kinetic fire, delivering full base and tier damage while staggering the opponent with concussive heat.

Subterranean Tunnels, Abandoned Mines, and Ruined Dungeons

  • Defensive Roleplay Operations:
    • Exploring damp, stagnant subterranean caverns involves navigating chilling drafts, stale air, and infestations of cave vermin.
    • The charm provides continuous thermal protection against the damp chill of deep stone, while the warm copper bauble serves as an auxiliary hand-warmer to preserve fine dexterity for lockpicking or trap disarming.
    • When barricading a secure rest chamber inside an ancient stone ruin, the avatar uses Kindle the Field Hearth to spark a coal brazier without producing choking soot or toxic smoke, keeping the air breathable in the enclosed room.

  • Calligraphy and Inscription: Skill level 2 (required for scribing continuous micro-inscriptions of ancient hearth verses around the bauble’s base rim).

Crafting Steps

  • Step 1: Forming the Copper Bauble Shell:
    • Trace and cut two symmetrical halves of the stylized flame shape from the thin copper sheet using the jeweler’s saw.
    • Using needle files and piercing drills, cut the delicate geometric lattice vents into both halves to allow light, air, and scent dissipation.
    • Form the halves into hollow convex shapes using a wooden dapping block and punch, annealing the copper with the brazier as needed to maintain malleability.
    • Solder the top suspension eyelet securely to the crest of one flame half using silver solder.
  • Step 2: Preparing the Basalt Ceramic Core:
    • Hand-shape the basalt kaolin clay into a compact core sized to fit snugly within the hollow interior of the copper bauble.
    • Kiln-fire the core to a bisque state, producing a porous, durable ground capable of withstanding repeated thermal cycling without fracturing.
  • Step 3: Compounding the Thermal-Conductive Ink:
    • In the agate mortar, grind the Tier 1 crystalline residue and volcanic ash into a fine powder, blending them with the cinnabar base.
    • Add the pine resin and elemental fire extract drop by drop, stirring continuously until the ink exhibits a smooth, heat-stable viscosity.
  • Step 4: Inscribing the Hearth Runes:
    • Using the fine sable brush, paint continuous flowing verses of shelter, endurance, and kindling onto the ceramic core.
    • Trace the exterior base rim of the copper flame with fine burins, inlaying the grooves with the gold leaf suspension to establish external mana reception channels.
  • Step 5: Firing and Crystalline Core Assembly:
    • Fire the inscribed ceramic core in the muffle furnace to set the alchemical pigments and permanently bind the crystalline ink particles.
    • Embed the coin-sized Tier 1 Magic Crystal directly against the rear seat of the ceramic core, ensuring flush physical contact with the inscribed conduits.
  • Step 6: Enclosing and Soldering the Bauble:
    • Place the assembled ceramic core and crystal inside the copper bauble halves, aligning the internal conduits with the exterior frame.
    • Carefully solder the two copper halves together along the seams using low-temperature silver solder, ensuring no excess solder blocks the pierced vents.
    • Pickle the assembled piece to remove oxidation, then polish the copper surface with fine jeweler’s rouge.
  • Step 7: Calibration and Ignition Testing:
    • Hold the finished bauble over an open hearth flame for one full minute to complete the attunement link.
    • Verify that the interior core ignites with a steady amber glow, verifying the projection of the thermal field and the release of sweet cedar and sage aromas.

Great Cold Night and Small Flame of Copper

In the times before the dividing of cattle, when the great mountain of smoke had not yet poured its black milk upon the grass, there was a season which the old grandfathers named the Long Shivering. In that turning of the world, the star Helios became pale like a dead eye in a bowl of broth, and the white mud fell from the clouds without ceasing for three hundred days. The water in the earthen jars became as hard as iron tools, and the people of the five rivers could not put their fingers to their mouths because the cold bit off the flesh like a sharp knife.

There was in that country an old traveler whose knees were crooked like the roots of a river tree, and his name upon the broken stone is scratched as Ba-Lug of the Dry Pot. He possessed neither cattle with horns nor high towers of mud bricks, but he carried upon his back a bundle of dried heather and a shallow pot of iron that had five holes in the rim. When the other men of the tribe wept into their wool skirts because their fires would not eat the wet branches, Ba-Lug would sit upon his heels and blow with his mouth upon a single dried bean of sheep dung until a small red eye looked back at him from the ashes.

In those days, the king of the high ditch was a man whose teeth were long and whose hair was greased with the butter of seventy goats. His name has been washed off by the rain from the tablet, but the scribe calls him the Master of the Iron Spit. This king had seven great braziers in his stone hall, filled with the coals of sweet oak trees that four hundred boys had cut in the green hills. The king sat upon his bench of cedar wood and ate hot marrow with a copper spoon, while outside his gates the widows and the small children froze until their skins turned blue like the sky before rain.

The king looked out from his high window and saw that the sky was growing darker, and from the northern mountains came the White Beast with Nine Claws, which the ancient ones feared more than the bite of the adder. This monster had hair as thick as five sheepskins, and its breath was the cold wind that turns the blood in a man’s heart to white ice. When the beast walked across the hills, the trees snapped with a noise like dry pottery, and no spear of bronze could touch its hide because the cold made the metal soft like lead.

The king called unto him his thirty captains who wore heavy rings of gold, and he said: “Build me a wall of oak logs around my hearth, and throw into the braziers all the dry barley from the storehouse, for if the cold beast smells the meat of my hall, it will come through the gate and eat my marrow.”

The captains threw the dry grain and the cedar beams into the flames, but the cold from the north was so great that the fire in the braziers died down to gray meal, and the frost crawled up the legs of the king’s bench like white spiders. The king’s fingers became blue, and the copper spoon dropped from his hand and broke upon the floor like dried clay.

Then came Ba-Lug into the courtyard, walking upon his crooked feet through the deep snow. He carried in his palm a tiny thing made of beaten red metal, shaped like the curling tongue of an adder when it tastes the morning sun. Inside the metal was a small round stone of black earth taken from the throat of the burning mountain, upon which were written three words in the blue juice of the crushed sky-pebble.

Ba-Lug came before the footstool of the shivering king and said in a voice that was full of the sound of dry grass: “O master of much butter, a great mountain of fire cannot keep a man warm if his heart is like an empty well. Take this little drop of red copper and hang it upon the bracelet of your arm. When the frost beast roars at the gate, do not throw your bread into the fire, but speak the word which means ‘The pot is on the hearth and the child has bread,’ and blow once into the pierced holes.”

The king looked at the small piece of copper and made a sour noise with his mouth. He said: “This old beggar gives me a fly’s droppings while my seven braziers are dead and the cold beast is biting the gate-post!” The king struck the old man with his ivory rod and snatched the little flame of copper from his palm, tossing it into the corner where the palace dogs were lying frozen in their hair.

Then came the great roar from the courtyard, and the White Beast with Nine Claws broke through the great timber doors as if they were dried reeds. The monster’s eyes were like two chunks of green ice, and wherever its paws touched the stone, the pavement cracked from the terrible freezing. The thirty captains of the king fell down upon their faces, and their breaths ceased within their ribs before they could draw their swords.

The king was terrified in his liver. His teeth rattled together like stones shaken in a gourd, and his knees would not lift his fat belly from the bench. He saw the beast opening its red mouth to swallow his head, so he rolled down into the dust of the corner where the dogs lay dead, and he searched with his frozen fingers until he found the little bauble of copper.

He could not read the three signs, for he had never looked upon writing except to count his cattle, so he shouted in a great shriek: “Old man of the pot! What is the noise that must be made for this metal to burn?”

Ba-Lug, who was standing near the broken gate with his hands tucked into his woolen sleeves, did not turn his head. He answered in his slow, quiet voice: “Say the word which means ‘Let there be a resting place for the wanderer,’ and let your breath go into the copper without anger.”

The king shouted the word, but because his belly was full of greed and fear, he shouted with a voice of fury like a man beating a donkey. Yet, because the black stone inside the charm had been mixed with the marrow of a Tier 1 crystalline thing that had lived near the fire-springs of the earth, the copper took the breath and turned it into a living ember.

From the pierced holes of the little bauble came forth a cloud of sweet smoke that smelled of dry cedar and roasted grain. The smoke did not blow away in the blizzard; it grew thick and round like an inverted clay bowl over the corner where the king lay. Inside the bowl of air, the frost melted away from the stones, and the air became as warm and gentle as the third week of the harvest season.

The White Beast with Nine Claws lunged forward with its great teeth to snap the king’s throat, but when its nose touched the edge of the warm smoke, the hair upon its snout shriveled like dried grass in a furnace. The beast howled with a terrible shriek, for the magic of the hearth is the enemy of the cold mountain, and the beast’s claws began to soften and run like wet tallow. The monster turned its tail and fled out through the broken gate, howling into the white hills until its voice was swallowed by the storm.

The king sat up in his warm corner and looked upon the little copper drop in his hand. His liver was restored, and his heart was filled with a wicked thought. He said within himself: “With this little nut of fire, I do not need the woodcutters to chop trees, nor do I need to give bread to the old men of the road. I will hang this upon my crown, and I will go into the high ice mountains and take the silver caves for myself, and I will never share a single spark with any creature.”

The king took the copper charm and tied it with a wire of gold to the top of his heavy crown. He walked out of the hall into the deep snow, shouting to the surviving people: “Behold your king, who carries the sun upon his forehead! You shall bring me forty jars of oil every morning, or I will leave you to freeze in the ditch!”

He marched up into the high frozen ridge to find the caves of silver, laughing at the cold wind that blew against his face. But because he had set the charm upon his head for mastery instead of hanging it near his heart for shelter, and because he walked with a soul full of cold thoughts, the copper bauble became incandescent with an unbearable fury.

The metal grew white-hot like iron in the bellows. The gold wire melted and ran down over his brow like boiling grease, and the copper bauble burned into the bone of his forehead. The king shrieked and reached up with both hands to tear the charm away, but his fingers stuck to the burning metal and were roasted to the knuckles. He stumbled in his agony and fell from the edge of the high cliff into the great crevasse where the blue glacier never melts.

Three days later, when the sky had cleared and the pale sun star Helios showed its face once more, Ba-Lug of the Dry Pot walked up the mountain path with his iron-spotted pot. He climbed down into the crevasse using a rope of twisted grass, and he found the king lying as cold as a stone block, with the gold crown melted into his skull.

Ba-Lug reached down and took the small copper bauble from the dead king’s brow. The metal was cool to his touch, pleasant like the warmth of a baking stone when the bread is taken away. He washed the ash and the blood from the vents in a pool of melted snow, and he threaded the flame-shaped bead onto the braided cord of his leather belt.

The old traveler walked back down into the valley of the five rivers. He went from tent to tent through the long night, kindling the dead hearths of the widows and boiling hot broth for the shivering children, and the little copper bauble glowed with a steady, gentle ember that never went out so long as there was a stranger in need of a fire.

Moral of the Story

The fire that is kindled to warm the wayfarer and protect the humble camp will endure through the fiercest winter, but the man who hoards the ember for his own vanity and seeks to rule with the flame shall find that the heat turns inward, and the fire he refused to share will consume the vessel that holds it.
