This group of closely related, inter-fertile races is known collectively as the Rhaconid Nobility. Descended from the original Progenitors and shaped by millennia in the magical depths of the Atacama Trench, they are the undisputed rulers of the Abyssal Queendom of Rhaconia. While they constitute only about 8% of the Queendom’s total population, their unique adaptations and ancestral lineage grant them the authority to govern. All Rhaconids share a matrilineal heritage, passing down titles and influence through the female line.
There are three primary Rhaconid sub-races: the dexterous Lotorians, the powerful Ampullatus, and the enigmatic Abyssals.
The Lotorian Rhaconid
The thinkers, artisans, politicians, and engineers of the Queendom. The Lotorians are the most numerous of the nobility and form the vast bureaucracy that runs the nation, their keen minds and nimble hands perfectly suited to managing the intricate workings of the deep-sea cities.
- Species: Rhaconid (Lotorian Sub-race)
- Physical Form and Sensory Traits: Lotorians have a sleek, bipedal form that blends the features of their ancestors. Their bodies are covered in a dense, dark, water-repellent fur, typically black or deep grey. Their faces are dominated by a distinctive black “mask” of fur around their intelligent, dark eyes. They possess a pair of five-fingered hands with tough, black pads and small, non-retractable claws, granting them an extraordinary degree of manual dexterity. Their heads are smoothly rounded, hinting at the cetacean “melon” beneath, which they use for a subtle, short-range form of echolocation ideal for navigating complex indoor spaces and sensing the emotional state of others through minute vibrations in the water. Their long, ringed tail is not used for propulsion but acts as a superb counterbalance and stabilizer.
- General Size: They stand between 4.5 and 5.5 feet tall, with a lithe but strong build, weighing between 100 and 160 pounds.
- Body Pattern: Their fur is almost always a single dark color, sharply contrasted by the black facial mask and the alternating black and grey rings on their prehensile tail.
- Life Cycle: Lotorians reach physical maturity around 25 years of age and are considered adults with the onset of magical capability, typically around age 30. They have a natural lifespan of up to 250 years. As per Rhaconian law, children are educated in state-run schools until adulthood, where their natural aptitude for problem-solving and fine manipulation is honed through rigorous training in engineering, statecraft, and magical theory.
- Potential Positives and Negatives:
- Positives: Their unparalleled manual dexterity makes them masterful enchanters, artisans, and technicians. Their sharp intellects are ideal for complex problem-solving, political maneuvering, and strategy.
- Negatives: They are the smallest and physically weakest of the Rhaconids, making them less suited for direct physical confrontation. Their dense fur requires considerable grooming and can become fouled in certain industrial or polluted environments.
- Specialized Item Slots Available: Manipulator Bracers (2). Lotorians have specialized slots on their forearms for intricate bracers. These items of gear are not simple armor but complex tools that can house arcane focusing lenses, micro-servos for operating on delicate machinery, or alchemical compound injectors, all controlled by the wearer’s fine motor skills.
- Environmental Adaptability: They are perfectly adapted to the pressurized, architecturally dense cities of the Queendom. They are less comfortable in the vast, open abyssal plains and are particularly sensitive to the chaotic magical energies of the deepest trenches.
- Other Information: Lotorian nobles often hold titles like “Guild Prime,” “Chief Engineer,” or “Ambassador.” They value intelligence, cunning, and craftsmanship above all else. Their lavish gear often includes intricate filigree and precisely enchanted components, reflecting their obsession with detail.
The Ampullatus Rhaconid
The warriors, wardens, and guardians of the Queendom. The Ampullatus are the military arm of the nobility, their formidable size and strength making them the living walls that protect Rhaconia from the leviathans of the deep.
- Species: Rhaconid (Ampullatus Sub-race)
- Physical Form and Sensory Traits: The Ampullatus are powerfully built bipeds, clearly favoring their cetacean ancestry. Their skin is largely hairless, thick, and smooth like a whale’s, ranging in color from deep blue to slate grey, often with a paler underside. Patches of coarse, dark fur may remain on their head, shoulders, and back. Their most prominent feature is the large, bulbous “melon” on their forehead, a sophisticated biological sonar organ. By wearing specific gear, they can focus this sense to send out powerful sonic blasts or create hyper-accurate, three-dimensional maps of their surroundings for miles in every direction. Their hands are large and webbed, built for grappling and wielding heavy equipment, and their muscular tail ends in powerful flukes, allowing for bursts of incredible speed underwater.
- General Size: Standing between 6.5 and 8 feet tall, their dense, powerful bodies weigh between 400 and 600 pounds.
- Body Pattern: Their skin is typically a uniform dark color on their back and a lighter grey or white on their chest and stomach. Some may bear mottled patterns or scars from battles with deep-sea creatures.
- Life Cycle: Ampullatus mature slightly slower than Lotorians, reaching adulthood around age 35. Their training is almost exclusively military, focusing on combat tactics, survival in the open abyss, and leviathan biology. They are incredibly durable and have the longest lifespan of the Rhaconids, often living for over 300 years.
- Potential Positives and Negatives:
- Positives: Their immense physical strength and durability make them unparalleled warriors. Their advanced echolocation is a powerful tool for navigation, hunting, and combat.
- Negatives: Their large, webbed hands lack the dexterity for fine, intricate tasks. Their sheer size means they require more sustenance and can be clumsy within the tighter confines of older city districts.
- Specialized Item Slots Available: Resonance Helm (1). The Ampullatus have a unique item slot for a helm specifically designed to interface with their melon. This piece of gear doesn’t just protect, it actively amplifies and modulates their sonar abilities. With the right helm, an Ampullatus can shatter rock with a focused sonic pulse, communicate silently with allies across vast distances, or detect the faintest heartbeat in the silted seabed.
- Environmental Adaptability: They thrive in the open, crushing pressures of the abyssal plains and the deep trenches that border the Queendom. They are the primary patrols for the nation’s exterior and are most comfortable in the vast, dark wilderness between cities.
- Other Information: Ampullatus nobles hold military titles like “Warden-Captain,” “Leviathan-Bane,” and “Shield of the Matriarch.” They embody the ideals of duty, strength, and sacrifice. Their gear is functional and massive, often crafted from the bones and carapaces of colossal sea creatures they have slain.
The Abyssal Rhaconid
The mystics, explorers, and seers of the nobility. The Abyssals are the rarest of the Rhaconids, a lineage that has adapted to life in the deepest, most magically-saturated regions of the trench. They serve as the Queen’s high mages and advisors on all matters arcane.
- Species: Rhaconid (Abyssal Sub-race)
- Physical Form and Sensory Traits: Abyssals are tall, unnervingly slender, and seem to move with a slow, liquid grace. Their skin is smooth, nearly translucent, and lacks fur entirely. Its color is a pale, pearlescent grey that reveals the faint, shifting glow of bioluminescent organs within their bodies. Their limbs are elongated, and their fingers and toes are long and webbed. They have large, solid-black eyes that are perfectly adapted to the absolute darkness of the deepest trenches. They lack the pronounced melon of the Ampullatus, their entire bodies having become sensitive to pressure and magical currents. They can “feel” the shape of their surroundings and the flow of thaumaturgic energy as a sixth sense.
- General Size: They are tall, standing between 6 and 7 feet, but their frame is incredibly slight, weighing only 150 to 220 pounds.
- Body Pattern: Their most notable feature is their internal bioluminescence. These lights, typically a soft blue or green, pulse slowly with their heartbeat and can flare in complex patterns when they are channeling significant amounts of magical energy.
- Life Cycle: The life cycle of an Abyssal is not well understood. They seem to mature at a rate tied to their magical exposure rather than age. They appear as adults when they emerge from the deep trenches to take their place in the court. Their lifespan is unknown; some are believed to be many centuries old, sustained by the raw magic of their chosen environment.
- Potential Positives and Negatives:
- Positives: They possess an unparalleled, intuitive connection to magic, allowing them to perceive and manipulate arcane forces in ways other species cannot comprehend. Their bodies are completely adapted to the most extreme pressures and magical concentrations.
- Negatives: They are physically very frail and brittle. Their extreme sensitivity makes them vulnerable to chaotic or “loud” magical feedback, which can cause them sensory overload and physical harm. They must spend significant time in magically-rich environments to remain healthy.
- Specialized Item Slots Available: Aetheric Mantle (1). Abyssals have a specialized item slot on their upper back and shoulders where they can affix a mantle. This gear often takes the form of symbiotic organisms or complex arcane siphons that allow them to passively draw in and store ambient magical energy. This stored energy can then be used to power other pieces of their gear, sustain them without food, or be unleashed in a devastating burst.
- Environmental Adaptability: They are the only race comfortable in the deepest parts of the Atacama Trench, near raw elemental fissures and in areas of wild, untamed magic. They find the magically “dull” environments of the upper cities to be draining and uncomfortable over long periods.
- Other Information: Abyssals rarely take formal titles, being known simply as “Seers” or “Deep Advisors.” They are aloof and mysterious, speaking in quiet, resonant Kaelomoric phrases that are often cryptic and prophetic. Their gear appears to be grown rather than built, consisting of living coral, woven light, and solidified shadows.
