Ages of the world

Elemental Age:

The genesis of Saṃsāra was defined by violent, unbridled chaos. Molten, bubbling oceans of raw elements cooled slowly to form the primordial crust of the moon. Great winds of raw atmospheric power became aware of their surroundings, violently clashing with cauldrons of liquid earth below. Fire, born from these cataclysmic impacts, gained its own awareness, while ice plummeted from the void, melting into sentient waters that influenced the global wars. These elemental factions battled, parleyed, and merged, creating zones of mass destruction. The sheer magnitude of this concentrated elemental friction fractured time and space, resulting in the birth of the sentient moon-goddess, Gaialilith. As her consciousness expanded, she became inextricably bound to the physical form of the moon, slowly asserting her will to pacify the raging elementals and stabilize the world for what was to come.

Age of First Life:

With the elementals brought to heel, Gaialilith nurtured the first microscopic life on Saṃsāra. Microbes consumed, dissolved, and evolved into multicellular forms. Guided by the moon-goddess, these early organisms began to absorb the ambient magic of the world, utilizing the heat and light of the star Helios to multiply. Simple, non-intelligent fungi, oozes, insects, arachnids, and invertebrates spread across the cooling crust. Overlapping this period, the Age of Plants began as flora took root in the oceans and spread across the scattered landmasses. A silent, eternal war commenced between the toxic, magical flora and the early fauna, driven by the chemical and arcane defenses of the encroaching plant life.

Age of Wildlife Expansion:

Desiring a more complex world, Gaialilith utilized her ability to scry across the multiverse to design her Menagerie. She brought forth chaotic, hybridized creatures—mixing the elegance of gazelles with the power of bears, and the flight of eagles with the bodies of lions. While many of these fantastical creations perished due to the harsh realities of the moon’s environment, the survivors adapted and thrived. Griffons claimed the skies, and leviathans took the deep oceans. Through magical influence, environmental pressures, and the convergence of advantageous traits, feral beasts slowly developed complex problem-solving abilities. This evolutionary feedback loop allowed certain species to harness the arcane weave, eventually granting them fully sentient minds and the foundation for their own unique cultures.

Age of First People:

Over 9,000 years ago, Gaialilith peered into the sea of purgatory and began drawing the souls of heroes from across the multiverse. These souls arrived on Saṃsāra, possessing native forms or inhabiting the sterile avatars of the world. Experiencing Transient Global Amnesia upon their arrival, these “First People” woke in scattered, random locations. Entire small communities, sometimes with pieces of their native lands, materialized as if plucked from different timelines and dimensions. They found a world already teeming with evolved, sentient monsters and ancient flora. As these displaced souls began to recover fragments of their memories and skills, they started to mix, multiply, and lay the foundations of society.

Early Civilization:

As the population of reincarnated souls and sentient native creatures grew, diverse groups began to form alliances for survival. They learned to interpret the mechanics of the world through the Mind’s Eye, deciphering the intrinsic statistics of items, creatures, and their own growth through tiers of power. Basic trade routes were established, and early communities clustered around stable magical conduits. The people learned to extract and utilize the magic crystalline cells left behind by the fauna, beginning the long tradition of crafting magical gear and relying on arcane batteries to survive the untamed environment.

Wilderness Conquest:

The expansion of society required pushing back the lethal, magical wilds of Saṃsāra. The sentient races waged brutal campaigns against the hostile plant life and the most dangerous feral beasts. It was an era of claiming territory, carving paths through dark cave systems, and charting the vast, unpredictable oceans. Powerful magic was wielded on a massive scale, utilizing items of group power that required multiple avatars to power siege weapons and protective barrier domes. The conflicts of this era left deep, permanent scars of wild magic on the land and water, some of which still radiate chaotic arcane energy to this day.

First Kingdoms:

With territories secured, structured governance took hold. The 73 island continents saw the rise of the first Constitutional Monarchies. These monarchs claimed absolute ownership of all land and improvements, establishing the system of renting land to the populace through taxes and fees. The Royal Courts took command of the early militaries and law enforcement, while the Guild Masters began to organize the workforce into strict hierarchies within cities exceeding five thousand residents. Diplomatic boundaries were drawn, and the 3,000-mile influence radius became the standard for international relations and ambassadorial exchange.

Middle Ages:

A period marked by deep political intrigue, espionage, and massive naval battles between the island nations. The Web of Foes expanded as factions, secret societies, and royal lineages vied for control over resources and trade routes. The god of commerce established the World Bank, standardizing the wealth of the world and facilitating international trade despite the existence of varied non-metal local coinages. Extradimensional storage crypts and party storage became highly sought-after strategic assets for warfare and logistics, completely changing the tactics of supply lines and territorial defense.

Renaissance:

A cultural and magical reawakening swept across Saṃsāra. As characters advanced to higher tiers, the mastery of the Mind’s Eye reached new heights, leading to massive library research and the unearthing of lost ancient histories. Artisans perfected the art of gear enhancement, utilizing runes to elevate item tiers. The structured granting of Titles of Power and Skill became a prominent societal pillar, recognizing heroic deeds and unparalleled mastery. The understanding of soul possession deepened, with Tier 5 characters forming complex mental gestalts across multiple avatars.

Beginning Industrial Age:

The current era is defined by the global transition to stable, efficient manufacturing driven by magical steam power. Elemental water and fire are combined to create environmentally friendly steam, powering mechanical transmission systems utilizing shafts, gears, chains, and pulleys. Arcane Battery Technology is the cornerstone of this revolution, storing massive amounts of mana extracted from magical crystals and ley lines. Technomancers and engineers construct massive magical machinery, airships, zeppelins, and railways. Society has transformed into a high-magic, steampunk-aligned civilization, complete with floating megacities and skyscrapers, though this rapid extraction of mana has begun to spark severe environmental concerns regarding the depletion of the world’s natural magical reserves.
