The Wretched

Why Bestowed:  This title recognizes those with a profound connection to pain – their own, or that which they inflict on others. It could be earned through:

  • Enduring Suffering: They’ve survived extraordinary physical or emotional torment, emerging transformed by the experience.
  • Master of Torment: They have an unnerving talent for inflicting both physical and psychological pain on others.
  • Unnatural Resilience: Their connection to agony grants a disturbing level of resistance to pain, making them incredibly difficult to incapacitate.

Lore: The Wretched are regarded with a mixture of fear, pity, and awe in Samsara. Some see them as twisted beings warped by suffering. Others as conduits of a primal, destructive force. Legends often paint them as tragic figures driven by vengeance or despair.

Stats:

  • Constitution: Significantly increased, their body has adapted to withstand extraordinary levels of pain.
  • Strength: May be increased, fueled by rage or the adrenaline rush of agony.
  • Intelligence/Wisdom: Could be decreased if their connection to pain has eroded their mental faculties or skewed their perception of reality.

Magic Powers: Limited initially. As they progress, a Wretched might develop abilities related to inflicting pain, manipulating negative emotions, or drawing strength from suffering.

Magic Skills:

  • Pain Transference: The Wretched can partially ‘absorb’ the suffering of another, granting them a temporary boost in strength or resilience at the cost of harming an ally (consensually!) or an enemy.
  • Aura of Dread: Their presence instills a chilling unease in those around them, causing hesitation or penalties to enemy actions.
  • Agonizing Touch: The Wretched can channel their connection to pain through touch, inflicting debilitating effects on their foes.

Important Considerations

  • Dark Themes: This title necessitates mature themes and player consent. Explore issues of trauma, pain, and the potential for corruption responsibly.
  • Self-Destructive Tendencies: The Wretched might gain power from pain, but at a cost to their sanity or well-being. Mechanics to reflect this are crucial.
  • Potential for Redemption: Can the Wretched break free from their connection to agony, or is it a force that will ultimately consume them? This offers powerful character arc possibilities.

How the Wretched title could be roleplayed for offense and defense, emphasizing the disturbing nature of their power and the unsettling tactics they might employ.

Important Note: Due to the dark themes inherent in this concept, clear communication between player, GM, and the group is paramount.  Establish safety tools and discuss boundaries prior to utilizing this archetype in play.

OFFENSE

  • Battlefield Terror:  The Wretched doesn’t rely on conventional weapons. Their presence is the weapon.
    • Shatter Morale: They revel in their grotesque resilience, shrugging off blows meant to incapacitate. Their aura of dread demoralizes enemies, making them hesitate.
    • Pain as Fuel: They might inflict self-harm to trigger surges of unnatural strength, terrifying foes with their disregard for their own body.
    • Psychological Warfare: They hiss agonizing threats, their voice tinged with madness. They exploit pain, turning a wound into a seed of doubt, making foes focus more on their own suffering than the fight.
  • Torture & Intimidation: Their offensive abilities lie in extracting information or breaking someone’s will.
    • Unbearable Touch: Their ability to inflict pain becomes a horrifying interrogation tool, bypassing physical defenses with mental anguish.
    • Fear Amplifier: They prey on existing fears and traumas, magnifying them, and using emotional agony to break a target’s resolve.
  • Sowing Despair:  Their ultimate offense might be less about physical harm and more about shattering hope in others.
    • Aura of Suffering: Their presence blights an area, allies feeling a creeping unease. The Wretched feeds off this growing despair.
    • Corrupting Touch: The Wretched might instill a lingering sense of dread or self-doubt in targets, leaving them weakened even after combat ends.

DEFENSE — The Wretched’s defenses are as disturbing as their offense, built on a chilling indifference to pain:

  • Unnatural Resilience: Attacks that would cripple others barely slow them down. This unnerves attackers as conventional tactics seem useless.
  • Pain Conversion: The greater the injury, the more dangerous the Wretched becomes. This forces enemies to reconsider reckless aggression.
  • Focus in Agony: Pain can be a strange source of clarity. While taking blows, the Wretched might gain sudden insights into the enemy’s tactics or weaknesses.
  • Desperation Tactics: When cornered, a Wretched won’t beg for mercy, but double down on inflicting as much suffering as possible – theirs and their enemy’s.

Important Considerations:

  • Limits: How much pain is too much, even for the Wretched? Moments where they break down from the overload add depth.
  • Inner Conflict: Is there a sliver of humanity left? A shred of empathy hidden beneath the torment? This provides a flicker of potential redemption.
  • Cost of Power: Each use of their abilities should leave a mark, physical or mental. This prevents them from becoming overpowered and emphasizes the tragic nature of their existence.

Handling with Care: The Wretched is designed as a deeply unsettling concept. Utilize it only if the group is comfortable and the player can portray such darkness responsibly.  This is a character that can easily become a compelling antagonist instead if that feels like a better fit.

The Wretch Who Faced the Emperor: A Ballad of Agony and Redemption
Thus speaks the Tome of Shattered Souls, its bloodstained pages whispering tales of pain and resilience:

In a time shrouded in perpetual twilight, where a cruel Emperor ruled over lands choked by despair, arose a figure known simply as the Wretched. Scars etched a gruesome map across their body, each a testament to a life steeped in unimaginable suffering. Yet, from that pain, the Wretched forged a terrifying resilience.

No blade could pierce their hardened flesh, no fire burn them. The Wretched exuded an aura of chilling dread, a palpable manifestation of their inner turmoil. Yet, whispers spoke of a spark of defiance buried beneath the layers of pain, a flicker of a desire for something more than mere survival.

The Wretched’s journey led them to the obsidian gates of the Emperor’s palace. The screams of the tortured echoed from within, a symphony of suffering that resonated with the Wretched’s own torment. Driven by rage, and perhaps a twisted sense of empathy, the Wretched stormed the palace, their every step a gruesome display of their unnatural resilience.

Guards fell before them, their weapons rendered useless against the Wretch’s warped body. The Emperor, a bloated creature of malice and luxury, cowered on his throne as the Wretched approached.

The Wretched did not seek revenge, not in the traditional sense. They forced the Emperor to witness their scars, each one a story of suffering inflicted by his regime. They forced him to feel a fraction of the agony he had so readily inflicted on others.

The Emperor, broken by the experience, finally saw the monstrous cost of his cruelty. He crumbled, his reign of terror ending not with a bang but with a whimper.

The Wretched, scarred but no longer solely defined by their suffering, vanished as mysteriously as they had appeared. Legends say they wandered the land, a chilling reminder that even the most profound pain can be a catalyst for change, a crucible that forges resilience from despair.

Moral:   Even in the darkest depths of pain, a flicker of hope can remain. Suffering can be a force for destruction, but it can also be a catalyst for change and redemption.
