The Hornet

Why Bestowed:  This title recognizes individuals who excel at provoking, stinging, and being an all-around persistent nuisance. It could be earned through:

  • Relentless Annoyance: They possess an uncanny ability to find what irritates others, be it a nervous habit, a pet peeve, or a well-hidden insecurity.
  • Endless Energy: They seem constantly buzz with energy, never ceasing in their attempts to irritate or distract those around them.
  • Master of Petty Disruption: They orchestrate a symphony of minor annoyances – misplaced items, buzzing sounds, constant nonsensical questions.
  • Undermining Focus: Their presence makes it nearly impossible for others to concentrate on any serious task, leading to frustration and mistakes.

Lore:  Hornets hold a strange position in Samsara.  Some villages employ them as living deterrents against bandits or predators, who are quickly driven off by the unrelenting annoyance. Others fear them, seeing them as harbingers of chaos or ill luck.

Stats:

  • Dexterity: Significantly Increased. They are quick, jittery, and hard to pin down, both physically and conversationally.
  • Constitution: Increased, reflecting their tireless energy and resilience against attempts to shut them down.
  • Intelligence/Wisdom: Could be slightly decreased to emphasize their relentless focus on being irritating, even to their own detriment.

Magic Powers: Limited initially.  However, a Hornet might develop minor illusions or magical pranks as they progress – flickering lights, phantom buzzing sounds, itching sensations.

Magic Skills:

  • Buzzing Distraction: The Hornet lets out a magically-augmented, unsettling hum, making it nearly impossible for nearby targets to focus long enough to perform complex tasks or cast spells.
  • Stinging Remark: With a well-timed insult or pointed question, they temporarily deal emotional damage that lowers a target’s confidence or willpower.
  • Disappear and Reappear: Like a relentless insect, they gain a short-range teleportation ability to vanish and reappear in a different spot within sight, making them incredibly slippery targets.

Important Considerations:

  • Volume Control: A Hornet should be irritating, but not so obnoxious as to derail the entire game. Consider mechanics limiting the use of their abilities or situations where they are temporarily ineffective.
  • Unexpected Friendships: Their boundless energy could be endearing to a stoic character, creating an odd-couple dynamic with comedic potential.
  • Off-Switch: Is there a specific situation or person that makes the Hornet calm down? This adds a layer of depth and potential character growth.

How the Hornet title could be roleplayed in various environments, focusing on their unique brand of irritating disruption for both defense and offense:

  • OFFENSE
    • Battlefield Buzz: The Hornet thrives on chaos. In combat, they don’t attack directly, but wreak havoc on the enemy’s focus and coordination:
      • Distract & Divide: Buzzing around spellcasters, flickering in and out of sight, making them fumble spells or incantations.
      • Misdirection: They create illusions of themselves, sending enemies chasing shadows or wasting attacks on false targets.
      • Swarm Tactics: When allied with others, the Hornet amplifies the chaos, their buzzing distraction making everyone else’s attacks more disruptive and potent.
    • The Infiltrator’s Bane:  Silent missions are a Hornet’s worst nightmare, but they can still ruin an enemy’s plans:
      • Unsettling Sounds: Buzzing noises, phantom footsteps, whispered taunts – anything to put sentries on edge or lead them into traps.
      • Sabotaging Supplies: Subtly loosening straps, hiding key items, or creating ‘accidental’ spills that disrupt the enemy’s preparation.
      • Undermining Composure: If captured, a Hornet turns interrogation into torture – not through violence, but by refusing to stay quiet, asking nonsensical questions, or buzzing incessantly.
    • Social Wasp: In negotiations, courtly affairs, or any tense social situation, the Hornet excels at throwing things into complete disarray:
      • Incessant Questions: They derail conversations with irrelevant or nonsensical interruptions, preventing anyone from building a coherent argument.
      • Pointed Rudeness: They breach etiquette with ‘innocent’ questions that highlight embarrassing details or expose a person’s flaws.
      • Weaponized Naivety: Sometimes, the Hornet feigns ignorance, twisting an opponent’s words or playing dumb to the point of complete frustration.
  • DEFENSE — A Hornet’s defenses rely on distraction, evasion, and turning the hunter into the hunted:
    • Master of Evasion: Their teleportation and jittery movements make them incredibly difficult to target or capture.
    • Divert and Escape: They create illusions or distractions (flickering lights, unusual noises) to sow confusion and cover their retreats.
    • Exhausting Pursuit: Even when chased, they make the pursuer’s life miserable – teleporting just out of reach, leading them into hazards, or buzzing around their head disruptively.
    • The “Hostage” They Can’t Get Rid Of: If captured, a Hornet becomes an unbearable burden. Constant noise, endless complaints, and non-cooperation make it easier to simply release them than deal with the hassle.
  • Important Notes:
    • GM as Partner: The success of the Hornet relies on a GM willing to provide ample opportunities for their irritating tactics and disruptive antics to shine.
    • The Fine Line: A Hornet should be funny and disruptive, not derail the entire campaign. Consider in-game consequences for pushing things too far (angry mobs, etc).
    • Situational Weakness: Open, quiet environments with few places to hide are their weakness. This forces them to adapt and use their irritating skills in new ways.

Sting of the Hornet: The Tale of Zhin and the Corrupted Court
Thus speaks the Tome of Forgotten Whispers, its brittle pages whispering secrets across time:

In an age of decadent splendor, where velvet cloaked corruption and whispered lies ruled the grand court of Emperor Gao, a young upstart named Zhin rose to notoriety. Zhin wasn’t a noble warrior nor a cunning mage. He was a Hornet – a relentless thorn in the side of the powerful, an embodiment of buzzing annoyance.

Zhin wasn’t imposing. In fact, he was small and scrawny, always dressed in ill-fitting clothes. Yet, his presence buzzed with an unsettling energy. He possessed an uncanny ability to find what irritated others – a misplaced hemline, a stutter in a courtier’s speech, a hidden insecurity.

The Emperor’s court, a nest of vipers vying for power, became Zhin’s playground. He’d pepper pompous advisors with nonsensical questions, causing them to fumble their carefully crafted arguments. During elaborate court dances, he’d ‘accidentally’ trip nobles, sending them sprawling in a flurry of silks and laughter. His most potent weapon was his relentless voice. He’d point out the Emperor’s hypocrisy with a childlike innocence, highlighting the disparity between the court’s extravagant displays and the suffering of the common people.

One tale speaks of Zhin’s greatest disruption. The Emperor, obsessed with immortality, planned a grand ritual requiring a rare and sacred flower. Zhin, through a series of seemingly harmless inquiries, exposed that the flower was not intended for the ritual, but to be hoarded by the Emperor’s most trusted advisor, who planned to use its magic to extend his own life.

The court erupted in chaos. Accusations flew, alliances crumbled, and the carefully constructed facade of unity dissolved under the relentless buzzing of Zhin’s questions. The ritual was abandoned, the advisor exposed, and the Emperor’s reputation tarnished.

Zhin, the Hornet, never sought power for himself. He reveled in exposing the flaws of the corrupt, using his annoying tactics to challenge the status quo. He became a symbol of hope for the downtrodden, a reminder that even the mightiest can be brought low by the relentless sting of a single voice.

Moral: Power, however absolute, can be vulnerable to the truth, spoken even in the most irritating of voices. A single individual, armed with courage and a knack for annoyance, can disrupt corrupt systems and inspire change.
