From: Registratus
-
- Tier Classification: Tier 3 (Rare).
- Description: A thick, leather-bound volume featuring pages made of beaten tin foil rather than paper, sealed closed with an interlocking lead padlock that bears the dual imprint of the scale and the quill.
- Historical Lore: Used as an official portable mortuary registry, this relic accompanies field clerics tasked with recording the demises of avatars during major wilderness conquests and naval campaigns across the outer reefs.
- Spatial Ability: Acts as an integrated, portable conduit to an institutional Extradimensional Storage Crypt; when unlocked with its paired iron key, the book’s hollow central chamber can receive up to twenty small items or unbonded gear dropped by slain party members, placing them into complete temporal stasis where no decay or item wear occurs.
- Defensive Ward: When rested on the ground during a long rest, the book radiates a subtle warning aura across a thirty-foot radius that alerts all sleeping avatars if any creature carrying concealed weapons or unregistered contraband crosses the perimeter.
- Resilience Profile: The ledger possesses an Armor Check of 9 and an item resilience rating of 10, remaining completely impervious to damage from non-magical fire, moisture, and normal acid contact.
Expanded Specifications for Registry Designation 471029
- Specific Gear Slot:
- Book / Reliquary Slot, carried securely via a reinforced cross-chest shoulder harness or strapped directly against the waistline at the Hip/Belt Slot.
- Because it functions as an institutional ledger and archival vault conduit, it occupies a primary utility slot while providing three secondary leaden clasp-rings along its spine to tether up to three consecrated writing instruments, wax seals, or forensic loupes without consuming extra carried equipment slots.
- Detailed Description:
- The ledger measures fourteen inches in height, ten inches in width, and four inches in thickness, weighing exactly nine pounds when its leaden seals are closed.
- Its heavy boards are bound in cured, black-dyed hide taken from an abyssal ox, reinforced at all eight corners by hand-peened pig-lead brackets that resist salt crust and blunt impacts.
- The interior leaf block consists of one hundred and twenty leaves of micro-hammered tin foil, each leaf burnished to a dull pewter luster and pre-etched with eighty-four micro-ruled ledger columns.
- Running down the center of the block is a rectangular hollow sanctum measuring eight inches by five inches by three inches, accessed only by unfolding the central folios.
- The outer closure is secured by a four-tumbler lead-cast padlock displaying the intertwined scale-and-quill insignia of Registratus, paired with a notched, heavy star-iron skeleton key worn around the cleric’s neck.
- Along the exterior fore-edge runs an inlaid channel of cold-rolled electrum wire that hums faintly with a muted, leaden vibration whenever an active soul or corpse is brought within arm’s reach.
- Expanded Historical Lore:
- Cast during the catastrophic archipelago reclamation wars of year 8504a, when expeditionary fleet clerics required a fireproof, waterproof method to catalog the true names and gear manifests of fallen avatars before their remains were claimed by maritime scavengers.
- Deployed extensively during the Siege of the Salted Bastion, where Chief Mortuary Scribe Vaelen documented the gear sets of four hundred fallen city-defenders while trapped inside a flooded sub-vault; despite three weeks submerged in brackish bilge water, every tin folio remained crisp and corrosion-free.
- Certified by the High Ecclesiastical Admiralty as an official probate repository, granting any field cleric bearing this item the absolute legal authority to impound, catalog, and sequester the assets of slain adventurers against unauthorized looting by contract mercenaries.
- Its central crypt conduit was linked to the deep vault networks of the sovereign mainland chanceries, ensuring that any arms deposited within its hollow core bypass localized battlefield entropy, planar rot, and opportunistic soul theft.
- Inherent Attributes:
- Physical Weight: 9 lbs.
- Intrinsic Material Resilience: 10.
- Armor Check Contribution: +2 AC to the bearer against physical and elemental attacks (well within the statutory cap of 3 AC per tier for Tier 3 equipment).
- Item Maximum Health: Avatar’s maximum health points plus 30 hit points (derived from 10 resilience multiplied by Tier 3).
- Damage Threshold State: Enters a broken state at or below 50% hit points, causing its extradimensional conduit to seal shut and locking the tin pages against all further inscription; at 0 hit points, the lead padlock cracks, the tin foil tears into inert grey flakes, and all stored items are violently ejected into adjacent physical space.
- Attunement Requirements: Synchronizes through a five-minute formal funerary invocation performed with certified bone-black ink and the Mind’s Eye, consuming one of the avatar’s maximum allocation of 10 attuned gear slots.
- Skills Gained While Carried or Equipped:
- Mortuary Forensics (Trained Skill): Imparts +3 skill points to Mind’s Eye evaluations when inspecting corpses, discerning exact times and causes of death, identifying lethal wound trajectories, or detecting poison residues.
- Probate Archival Law (Trained Skill): Grants +3 skill points to negotiating estate distributions, drafting last wills, and arbitrating rightful ownership of salvaged relic caches.
- Cryptographic Paleography (Temporary Skill): Adds +2 temporary skill points to Mind’s Eye checks when deciphering defaced legal seals, archaic trade scrip, and obscured tomb markers.
- Multiple Passive Magics:
- Incorruptible Record:
- Any name, serial stamp, or inventory manifest carved into the tin-foil leaves with an iron or diamond stylus is permanent; it cannot be dissolved by acid, planed away by mechanical friction, or warped by illusion spells.
- The bearer gains complete immunity to the Diseased and Rotting conditions, shielded by the purifying, airtight sanctum aura of the mortuary lead.
- Necrotic Grounding:
- While the ledger is strapped to the torso or hip, the bearer gains natural resistance to necrotic, rot, and cold damage, reducing all incoming necrotic harm by 3 points.
- Stray undead, restless specters, and corpse-parasites within twenty feet suffer a -2 penalty to their physical attack rolls, subdued by the oppressive judicial weight of the registry.
- Weightless Probate Conduit:
- The twenty items placed into the central stasis cavity add zero physical weight to the ledger; the book remains consistently at nine pounds regardless of whether it holds gold coins, war hammers, or heavy plate mail fragments.
- Incorruptible Record:
- Multiple Active Magics:
- Sequestration of the Fallen (Crypt Conduit Action):
- As an action, the bearer turns the star-iron key in the lead padlock, unfolding the tin leaves to expose the central stasis cavity.
- The wielder may reach out to an unbonded piece of gear or dropped equipment belonging to an avatar who fell within the last 24 hours, transferring it up to fifteen feet directly into the crypt.
- Stored items enter absolute stasis: magical timers, attunement decay, metal oxidation, and explosive fuses cease advancing entirely until the item is reclaimed by the rightful heir or an accredited church liquidator.
- Cinerary Audit (Targeted Nullification Action):
- By expending an action and pointing the open book at an active undead entity or reanimated corpse within thirty feet, the bearer reads aloud a formal notice of expiration.
- The target must make an opposed saving throw against the bearer’s Tier 3 difficulty check; on a failure, the entity suffers 3d10 radiant/force damage as its unholy animating spark is legally audited, and it gains the Paralyzed condition for one round.
- Vigil of the Lead Seal (Camp Ward Enactment):
- When rested flat upon the earth or a campsite stone, the wielder spends one minute pressing the lead seal against the soil to activate the thirty-foot perimeter ward.
- The ward remains vigilant for up to twelve hours; it ignores harmless beasts but immediately triggers a sharp, tolling iron-bell resonance inside the Mind’s Eye of all sleeping companions if any creature carrying drawn steel, poisoned blades, or uncertified contraband steps across the boundary.
- Probate Foreclosure (Reaction Utility):
- When a companion within thirty feet drops to zero hit points, the bearer may spend a reaction to snap the book shut, locking their unspent mana pool and physical gear under an emergency judicial escrow.
- Prevents hostile entities, corpse looters, or soul-devouring fiends from siphoning the fallen companion’s mana, severing their soul-thread, or looting their equipped items for three combat rounds.
- Sequestration of the Fallen (Crypt Conduit Action):

Ecclesiastical Exchanges, Mortuary Brokerages, and Valuation of the Lead-Sealed Cinerary Ledger
- Cathedral Chanceries and Ecclesiastical Consistory Repositories:
- Operating within the consecrated cloisters of metropolitan cathedrals, grand basilicas, and sovereign diocesan seats, these official clerical registries serve ordained field prelates, guild chaplains, and High Ecclesiastical judges.
- Procuring the ledger through an ecclesiastical consistory requires presenting formal clerical credentials, letters of mortuary dispatch, or an accredited writ of field probate issued by a regional archdiocese.
- In metropolitan church complexes such as the High Sees of Aterian or Badarian, the catalog purchase price of the ledger is fixed at approximately 6,000 to 8,500 gold.
- Transactions must be processed as consecrated archival endowments, transferred directly through verified World Bank balance exchanges that record the purchasing cleric’s baptismal name and diocese registry number.
- When an accredited cleric or surviving party transfers an unneeded ledger back to the consistory archive, the church assesses the standard institutional tier markdown (a 30% reduction for a Tier 3 seller), disbursing a probate compensation grant of roughly 4,200 to 5,950 gold credited directly to their verified personal World Bank account.
- Municipal Undertaker Guildhalls and Maritime Mortuary Depots:
- Situated along the harbor approaches, quarantine quays, and outer dockyards of bustling island ports that regularly receive casualty manifests from reef expeditions and naval patrols.
- The wardens are hardened guild morticians, gravediggers, and coroner-notaries who conduct business amid the scent of dry lime, embalming bitumen, and salt wash.
- Transactions require the buyer to submit to an uncoiling inspection of the central stasis cavity, turning the star-iron key to confirm that the extradimensional link remains anchored to the mainland crypt network and that the tin-foil leaves have suffered no mechanical shearing.
- In exposed coastal frontier seats such as Port Lupemban or outer reef settlements where maritime disease outbreaks and combat drownings create constant demand for sealed probate storage, the ledger commands 7,500 to 9,500 gold.
- Selling the volume to a licensed municipal mortician yields an immediate payout of roughly 4,500 to 5,800 gold via World Bank treasury draft, accompanied by an official probate relinquishment certificate logged in the municipal coroner’s roll.
- Academic Antiquarian Ateliers and Forensic Relic Boutiques:
- Located along university lanes, judicial scholastic quarters, and arcane legal institutes in grand metropolitan centers, these establishments cater to paleographers, estate litigators, and institutional collectors.
- The proprietors are master curators and forensic legal scholars who handle merchandise on velvet-lined consultation desks shielded by anti-thaumaturgic glass cases.
- The volume is tested with precision calipers, ink-dissolution agents, and Mind’s Eye scans to verify that all one hundred and twenty tin pages retain their ruled columns and that the pig-lead corner brackets show no planar distortion.
- In scholarly centers where authentic records from the archipelago reclamation wars and the Great Sinking Crisis hold high historical value, the purchase price ranges from 8,000 to 11,000 gold.
- An adventurer offloading the ledger to an academic atelier receives between 5,000 and 6,500 gold via authenticated World Bank scrip, minus minor examination and cataloging filing fees.
- Sunken Catacomb Brokerages and Clandestine Necropolis Fences:
- Hidden within forgotten ossuaries, flooded crypt alleys, and lawless coastal subterranean grottos beneath municipal cemeteries, these shadow dens cater to rogue graverobbers, unbonded necromancers, and salvage cartels.
- The proprietors are dangerous relic fences who operate behind bone grilles and null-magic wards, trading exclusively in illicit death-goods, uncertified wills, and salvage taken from fallen high-tier expeditions.
- Transactions strictly bypass the World Bank, prohibiting institutional scrip, checks, or municipal notes; all purchases must be paid in untraceable, physical specie—heavy platinum ingots, ancient electrum trade coins, or unrefined raw gold dust transported in personal extradimensional pouches.
- Illicit grave syndicates and scavengers value the ledger’s weightless stasis vault for smuggling forbidden gear, stolen bodies, and untraceable death-contraband past city watch checkpoints, inflating the black-market price to between 10,000 and 14,000 physical gold coins.
- When selling the ledger to a necropolis fence seeking an airtight reliquary to conceal illicit relics from royal tax hounds, the fence demands no provenance papers or death warrants, paying an immediate cash sum of 6,000 to 8,000 physical gold coins directly into the seller’s hands.
Field Application and Environmental Roleplay of the Lead-Sealed Cinerary Ledger
- Sinking Reefs, Waterlogged Shipwrecks, and Flooded Bilges
- Defensive Roleplay:
- While wading through waist-deep, brackish seawater inside the flooded lower hold of a scuttled galleon, the cleric keeps the ledger strapped securely against their hip using the heavy harness.
- The Incorruptible Record and impervious pig-lead brackets protect the volume completely from saltwater corrosion, rot, and bilge acid, ensuring the records of fallen comrades remain pristine despite continuous submersion.
- When a companion collapses beneath the rising tide after an ambush by drowned ghouls, the bearer triggers Probate Foreclosure as a reaction; the fallen avatar’s vital gear and remaining mana are instantly locked under emergency escrow, preventing opportunistic aquatic scavengers and sea-leeches from stripping the corpse before the body can be hauled to the surface.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Confronted by bloated, barnacle-encrusted sea draugr climbing through the shattered hull timbers, the cleric brandishes the heavy ledger with both hands.
- Invoking the Cinerary Audit action, the cleric reads aloud the deceased names inscribed upon the beaten tin leaves, projecting a crushing wave of radiant judicial force into the surf.
- The radiant energy sears the brine from the animated corpses, dealing 3d10 radiant damage and locking the leading draugr in rigid paralysis, allowing allied frontline fighters to smash their waterlogged frames into driftwood.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Subterranean Catacombs, Ancient Crypts, and Forgotten Tombs
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Navigating claustrophobic, dark burial vaults thick with tomb dust and miasmatic rot, the cleric relies on the Necrotic Grounding passive.
- The leaden shielding absorbs the ambient tomb chill, granting the bearer natural resistance to necrotic harm while the ledger’s heavy presence reduces the incoming strike accuracy of lurking ghouls and spectral shadows by -2.
- Furthermore, the cleric is completely shielded from airborne corpse rot and grave fever, as the airtight consecration aura of the lead seals neutralizes all natural and magical contagion.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- When ambushed by a wight or tomb shade rising from an ornate stone sarcophagus, the cleric unlocks the lead padlock with the star-iron key.
- Channeling the Cinerary Audit, the cleric points the open central chamber toward the spectral entity, proclaiming its existence an unlawful, unrecorded trespass against the municipal registry.
- The unholy animating bond of the spirit is legally audited and fractured by radiant power, stunning the wraith mid-manifestation so companions can shatter its anchoring bones.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Wilderness Outposts, Swamps, and Bivouacs
- Defensive Roleplay:
- When making camp within a fog-choked, hostile marsh where bandits, assassin teams, or nocturnal stalkers operate under cover of total dark, the cleric initiates the Vigil of the Lead Seal.
- Resting the heavy nine-pound book flat upon a dry campsite stone, the cleric presses the scale-and-quill lead seal firmly into the dirt to project the thirty-foot perimeter ward.
- While the party sleeps, the ward ignores natural night critters, but the instant a hostile raider carrying concealed iron daggers or unrecorded poisons steps over the boundary line, a sharp tolling iron-bell resonates inside the Mind’s Eye of every sleeping companion, immediately waking the camp without alerting the infiltrators.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- Following an intense skirmish where a vital frontline ally falls deep in contested territory, the cleric uses Sequestration of the Fallen.
- By turning the star-iron key and pointing the hollow crypt conduit toward the fallen warrior’s dropped magical greatsword and enchanted armor, the gear is instantly transferred across fifteen feet of mud directly into the book’s central stasis pocket.
- The high-value equipment is securely sequestered away from advancing enemy marauders, preserved in weightless temporal stasis until the party retreats to safe lines.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- High Court Chanceries, Municipal Inquests, and Embassy Halls
- Defensive Roleplay:
- During contentious estate litigation or post-battle treaty arbitrations between competing guild houses, corrupt nobles may attempt to confiscate the assets of an annihilated adventuring party under bogus salvage pretexts.
- The bearer lays the ledger upon the negotiating table with a heavy, resounding thud, invoking their formal status as an accredited field probate officer.
- The Probate Archival Law and Forensic Forensics passives grant the bearer substantial authority to refute false land deeds, expose forged signatures, and establish uncontestable legal custody over sequestered relic caches.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- If an unbonded assassin disguised as a court bailiff attempts to draw a poisoned stiletto to silence a key witness during the proceeding, the ledger’s ambient perimeter alert trips immediately, exposing the hidden weapon to the entire assembly.
- The cleric slams the book open toward the traitor, unleashing the Cinerary Audit to bind the assassin’s limbs in paralyzing legal censure before palace guards tackle them to the marble floor.
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Aerial Skyships, Cloud Docks, and High-Altitude Battlements
- Defensive Roleplay:
- Aboard a patrol cutter sailing through turbulent storm fronts where crosswinds and lightning discharges threaten the crew, the cleric wears the ledger across the shoulder harness.
- The book’s weightless probate capacity allows the cleric to safely carry up to twenty critical heavy salvage components, fallen crew equipment sets, or sensitive flight instruments without altering the skyship’s delicate ballast balance.
- If an ally is blown off the deck or mortally wounded by an aerial harpoon, the cleric snaps the book shut to trigger Probate Foreclosure, locking their unspent mana and belongings into temporal stasis before the body plunges into the endless cloud sea below.
- Offensive Roleplay:
- When boarding an opposing pirate zeppelin crewed by reanimated skeletal sky-corsairs, the cleric steps across the boarding gangway, holding the open tin block high.
- The radiant glare of the Cinerary Audit reflects blindingly off the tin-foil leaves, staggering the undead helmsman and locking their skeletal fingers against the flight rudder, sending the hostile airship into an uncontrollable drift.
- Defensive Roleplay:

Perception of Activation:
- Sight:
- User’s Perspective:
- When the star-iron key rotates inside the four-tumbler lock, the dull lead padlock emits a cold, pale cerulean glow from the engraved scale-and-quill emblem.
- As the volume unfolds, the micro-hammered tin-foil leaves shimmer with a soft, mercury-like luster, while the eighty-four ruled columns on each page trace themselves in faint luminescent grey lines.
- The rectangular stasis sanctum at the ledger’s core opens into an impossibly deep, amber-lit geometric aperture where stored relics float suspended in perfectly stationary, dustless air.
- When Sequestration of the Fallen is triggered, a targeted weapon or piece of armor dematerializes into a ribbon of silvery, ash-like light that coils cleanly into the hollow cavity.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Bystanders see the heavy ox-hide book snap open as if drawn by a weighted counter-lever, its beaten tin pages reflecting light like polished sheets of pond ice.
- A pale, circular perimeter ring of dull grey light ripples outward across the ground thirty feet in all directions, illuminating blades of grass and flagstones with a momentary frost-like sheen before settling into an invisible boundary.
- Inscriptions on the open tin folios appear to darken suddenly, as though cold iron ink were blooming through the metal surface from an invisible hand.
- User’s Perspective:
- Sound:
- User’s Perspective:
- Turning the key produces a heavy, definitive clack-tumbler that echoes through the wielder’s forearm with the finality of a prison portcullis dropping into place.
- Shifting the tin-foil leaves creates a delicate, metallic rustle resembling hundreds of thin silver coins sliding across one another.
- When sealing the book shut, a low, resonant iron gong tolls directly within the ear canal, followed by absolute auditory silence for a fraction of a second.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Nearby allies and foes hear a deep, rhythmic mechanical click, followed by the faint, somber tolling of a distant church bell across empty water.
- If an intruder crosses the campsite ward, an abrupt, metallic chime snaps in the air with the sharp crack of an iron chisel striking granite.
- User’s Perspective:
- Smell:
- User’s Perspective:
- The interior cavity exhales a dry, airless puff smelling of cold tin filings, crushed tallow, and ancient parchment that has been preserved inside a mountain crypt for centuries.
- Faint undertones of frankincense and pulverized bone charcoal accompany each opening of the central stasis chamber.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- The surrounding air loses its warmth, taking on the crisp, sharp scent of newly fallen snow mixed with dry lime, powdered slate, and clean lead shavings.
- User’s Perspective:
- Taste:
- User’s Perspective:
- A lingering, dry mineral coolness settles on the back of the palate, akin to drinking melted snow from an unpolished pewter goblet.
- The tongue experiences a mild, alkaline dryness whenever a companion’s fallen gear is drawn into the temporal escrow chamber.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Those standing within the perimeter ward note a faint, powdery chalkiness on their lips, as if inhaling the dust of freshly carved headstones.
- User’s Perspective:
- Touch:
- User’s Perspective:
- The pig-lead corner brackets and ox-hide binding become dense and cool, imparting a steadying, heavy balance that anchors the wielder’s grip against tremors.
- The tin leaves feel exceptionally slick, smooth, and chillingly devoid of thermal warmth, resisting finger oil and body heat.
- Reaching into the stasis sanctum produces a tingling numbness in the fingertips, like dipping a hand into liquid mercury without feeling wetness.
- Observer’s Perspective:
- Undead targets subjected to the Cinerary Audit feel an invisible, freezing weight press down upon their skulls, accompanied by the sensation of iron nails driven into their joints to pin them in place.
- User’s Perspective:
- Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
- Mortuary Ledger Senses:
- The bearer’s Mind’s Eye suddenly registers all nearby organic entities as mortality entries: heartbeats are heard as faint ticking clocks, and dying avatars appear bordered by fading amber halos marking their remaining breaths.
- Fallen equipment within thirty feet lights up with faint white umbilical filaments connecting the items to the ledger’s open conduit.
- Perimeter Density Awareness:
- The wielder feels the thirty-foot perimeter ward as a taut, subterranean drumhead; any creature carrying concealed weapons or illicit cargo steps onto this membrane with heavy, jarring psychic thuds.
- Planar Stasis Isolation:
- Observers and the wielder alike sense a total cessation of natural decay within the book’s immediate vicinity; dust motes freeze mid-air over the open leaves, and the smell of rotting swamp gas or corpse decay is completely blotted out.
- Mortuary Ledger Senses:
- Positives:
- Guarantees total preservation of up to twenty vital arms, armor pieces, or relics, preventing looters, rust-monsters, planar scavengers, or elemental fire from destroying them.
- Emits an infallible, long-duration campsite ward that specifically detects concealed hostility and contraband without producing loud mundane noise to alert the ambushers.
- Provides continuous personal protection against rotting, plagues, and necrotic harm while actively punishing and freezing restless undead through legal censure.
- Grants weightless hauling utility for heavy salvage gear without burdening the cleric’s physical movement.
- Negatives:
- The ledger requires the star-iron key to access its stasis crypt; if the key is lost, stolen, or damaged, the contents cannot be retrieved without specialized master clockwork bypasses.
- Opening the stasis pocket exposes an unmistakable cerulean light and metallic chime, making clandestine retrieval in stealth situations difficult.
- If the ledger’s material resilience is breached and its hit points reach zero, the stasis breach causes all twenty stored items to explode outward violently across adjacent ground.
- Provides no direct kinetic barrier against mundane arrows, bolts, or piercing weapons aimed away from the book’s reinforced cover.
Recipe: Fabrication of the Lead-Sealed Cinerary Ledger
- Materials Needed:
- Two square yards of cured abyssal ox-hide, vegetable-tanned and dyed with bone-black charcoal.
- Four pounds of refined pig-lead, smelted to purge common slag and mineral impurities.
- One hundred and twenty sheets of micro-hammered tin foil, cut to fourteen by ten inches and pre-burnished with chalk.
- Three ounces of cold-rolled electrum wire (an equal fusion of silver and gold).
- One Tier 3 planar void crystal or spatial anchor gemstone (harvested from a phasing planar hound, displacement entity, or an untouched astral rift).
- Four ounces of uncorrupted meteoric star-iron for the key and tumbler mechanisms.
- Two oak or seasoned walnut binding boards, quarter-sawn to four-inch thickness with a pre-routed hollow cavity.
- Half a pint of bone-glue mixed with ground frankincense and consecrated river salts.
- One small vial of certified gall ink blended with iron filings and crushed grave-lichen.
- Tools Required:
- A bookbinder’s press, bone folders, linen sewing cords, and heavy bookbinding awls.
- A precision metal-planishing hammer and polished horn anvil for foil smoothing.
- A jeweler’s micro-ruling scribe and bronze straightedge calibrated for eighty-four-column grids.
- A lead-casting ladle, heat-resistant graphite ingot molds, and cold-choking swages.
- A watchmaker’s lock-cutting lathe, needle files, and star-iron burrs for key biting.
- A leather skiving knife, edging gouges, and hand-peening brass rivets.
- Skill Requirements:
- Master Bookbinding & Leatherworking: Trained skill level of at least 7 (baseline 4 plus 3 for a Tier 3 item) to assemble the foil block and hollow casing without warping.
- Precision Metallurgy & Locksmithing: Trained skill level of at least 7 to cast the lead brackets, build the four-tumbler lock, and file the paired star-iron key.
- Spatial Enchantment & Planar Geometry: Trained skill level of at least 8 to align the central void crystal with the mainland extradimensional crypt matrix.
- Mind’s Eye Arcane Diagnostics: Competency to establish the stasis threshold and link the perimeter alarm ward during final curing.
- Crafting Steps:
- Step 1 (Foil Preparation and Column Ruling): Smooth the one hundred and twenty micro-hammered tin-foil sheets between horn blocks with the planishing hammer; using the bronze straightedge and ruling scribe, score eighty-four micro-ruled ledger columns into each leaf without piercing the metal.
- Step 2 (Core Cavity and Foliation Assembly): Cut an eight-by-five-inch rectangular window through the center of the inner sixty tin leaves; gather the sheets into signatures using linen cords and bone-glue, leaving the central stasis cavity open and aligned.
- Step 3 (Board Carving and Leather Mounting): Hollow the interior face of the oak boards to match the folio window; wrap and stretch the dyed abyssal ox-hide over the boards using bone-glue, turning the edges cleanly and skiving the inner flaps flat.
- Step 4 (Lead Bracket Peening): Melt the pig-lead in the graphite ladle and pour it into the corner molds; cool the eight corner brackets and peen them directly onto the leather-bound boards using brass rivets to lock the book’s outer perimeter against physical shock.
- Step 5 (Lock Mechanism and Key Forging): Machine the four-tumbler lock casing from cast lead, engraving the scale-and-quill insignia onto the face; forge the star-iron key from meteoric iron, cutting the tumbler notches to match the tumblers, then mount the lock hasp across the outer fore-edge.
- Step 6 (Spatial Conduit Alignment and Inlay): Seat the Tier 3 planar void crystal within the spine beneath the central cavity; string the cold-rolled electrum wire along the fore-edge channel and route it directly into the crystal’s facets.
- Step 7 (Stasis Binding and Boundary Consecration): Turn the star-iron key inside the lead lock while projecting mana through the Mind’s Eye; submerge the spine briefly in the consecrated salt wash, binding the twenty-item stasis limit, locking the thirty-foot alarm perimeter, and sealing the ledger’s material resilience at 10.
Did Not Drink Bilge and Counting of 400 Helmets
In the year when the sea turned grey like the grease in a cold kettle, which is written in the claw-marks upon the lime-brick as the Year of the Salted Bastion, though in the earlier scratched pebbles from the reed-ditch it is called merely “The Day the Eel Bit the Kettle-Bottom,” there was a great closing of gates. The kings of the mainland had sent out seventy-two ships with black sails to demand the ear-rings of the island people, and the island people had gathered their sheep, their iron spits, and their grandmothers into the low fort that was built upon the spit of wet gravel called Cor-Vael.
Now the walls of Cor-Vael were not made of squared granite, but of soft grey sea-sponge stone that drinks the foam and smells of rotten bladder-wrack. Day and night, the black ships threw balls of baked pitch over the parapet, and the sea-water came in through the arrow-slits whenever the south wind blew hard against the reef.
Inside the lower cellars, where the water was already up to the second row of beer-casks, there sat the Chief Mortuary Scribe whose name was Vaelen-with-the-Spotted-Thumb. Upon the broken slate of the fish-house he is written as “He Who Dipped the Goose-Wing in Soot While the House Was Leaking.” He was not a spearfighter, nor did he possess a horse with copper shoes, but he wore an apron of dried ox-hide that had two iron spoons stuck through the bib, and upon his hip he carried a great square box of tin and black pig-fat.
This box was the Ledger of the Lead Lock. Its leaves were not of split calf-gut, which swells up and stinks like dead tripe when the sea touches it, but of beaten white tin, thinner than the skin upon boiled milk, beaten flat with fifty thousand strokes of an alder-wood mallet upon an anvil made of whale-rib. The lock upon its front had four heavy leaden teeth, and the key was a four-sided splinter of black lightning-stone that had fallen into the marsh during the reign of the bald queen.
Above the cellars, the fighting men were falling from the parapet into the ditch. The archers from the ships had dipped their arrows in the liver of the blue sea-scorpion, so that whenever a boy’s knuckle was scratched, his tongue swelled up like a purple turnip and his knees turned to tallow.
“Ho, Clerk!” shouted the captain of the gate, whose neck was as thick as a beer-tub and whose coat of fish-scale brass was cracked across both shoulders. “Leave your cold grease-pot and bring an iron spit to the rampart! Three hundred barbarians are standing upon their boat-hooks at the water-gate, and my men have no more dry bowstrings! Why do you sit in the green water scratching lines upon white metal like a beetle gnawing an old turnip?”
Vaelen did not lift his forehead from the tin foil. He dipped his bone awl into the black gall-pot and scratched four straight lines: skrrr-tock.
“The gate is not my parish,” said the scribe, and his teeth made a small dry clicking like beans being shaken in a bladder. “The archdiocese has given me three hundredweight of tin and one iron key to write the names of those who have finished their barley. If a man dies without his helmet-mark in the book, his nephew cannot take his fishing-skiff, and the church cannot take the third sheep for the oil-tax. When the water covers the roof-tree, who shall remember whether the smith’s boy had four copper groats in his pouch or five? Go up to the wall, Captain, and see that you do not fall face-down in the mud, for if your brass coat is crusted with dung, I cannot read the guild-stamp upon your brisket.”
The captain spat into the bilge-water and ran back up the stone ladder, cursing the mothers of all clerks who write upon lead.
Then the great storm-tide of the fourteenth night broke the outer mole of the haven. The salt water came into the lower vault not as a drip, but as an open green wall that threw the salt-pork barrels against the timber rafters. The lanterns of sheep-tallow were quenched with a great fizz, and the fifty wounded spearmen who lay upon the dry kelp began to roll in the dark, crying out to the fish-gods and the mothers of the salt-wells.
The sea-soldiers of the fleet came in through the breach, carrying torches of pine-tar that burned with an oily red smoke under the wet arches. They were greedy men who had made vows to the shark-altars; they carried iron scrapers to strip the gold wire from the teeth of the drowned, and three-pronged forks to fish the dead out of the froth before the crabs could nibble their knuckles.
“Here is a fat clerk sitting upon a dead man’s chest!” roared a sea-soldier whose beard was woven with lead sinkers. “Look at his great black codex! The boards are covered with abyssal ox-hide that would make sixty pairs of waterproof shoe-soles! Kill him with a boathook and turn the pages into fish-hooks!”
Vaelen stood up in the knee-deep black salt-wash. The cold foam was licking at the hem of his felt coat, but his thumbs did not tremble.
He took the lightning-stone key from his throat-string and thrust it into the leaden cheek of the lock. He turned it once to the left, which is the path of the funeral-boat, and once to the right, which is the path of the tax-collector.
Clack-tung.
The noise did not stay in the stone room; it went through the water like the smack of an oar upon an overturned kettle. The four sea-soldiers who were splashing through the brine with their iron forks stopped as if their greaves had grown roots into the slate flags. The torches of pine-tar did not go out, but their red flames turned to a cold, flat cerulean blue that gave off no smoke, revealing that the water in the room was not black, but filled with a million tiny floating scales of grey metal.
Then Vaelen opened the tin leaves until he came to the hollow rectangular belly at the center of the book.
From the dark hole in the tin block there came no smell of bilges, nor the stink of the scorpion-poison, but the dry, whistling air of a high mountain tomb where sheep have never grazed and rain has never fallen.
“By the decree of the Ecclesiastical Consistory,” Vaelen spoke, and his words were neither high nor low, but like the sound of flat flagstones being dragged across dry sand, “these four hundred iron coats are impounded into stasis. The flesh belongs to the salt-weir, but the equipment is registered under Registry Four-Seven-One-Zero-Two-Nine. You have brought iron into the probate precinct without an export license from the High Bailiff. Your hands are crooked. The ledger demands the tally.”
He reached out his grey hand toward the water where the dead spearmen lay rolling among the pork-tubs.
As he pointed the hollow book, the dropped brass swords, the star-iron daggers, the notched wooden shields, and the copper arm-rings of the slain soldiers rose up out of the salt water. They did not fly like birds; they slid through the air in long, straight lines like grey eels swimming through grease, shedding the brine and the gore in white flakes of dry salt until they vanished one by one into the three-inch belly of the tin block.
Twenty pieces of master-forged gear went into the hole, yet the ledger did not grow thicker by the thickness of an onion-skin, nor did Vaelen’s arm sag under the weight of forty pounds of soaked ash-wood and bronze.
“He is an eater of weapons!” shouted the soldier with the lead-braided beard, lifting his heavy iron cleaver to chop the clerk’s shoulder-blade.
Vaelen did not dodge. He lifted the open tin volume, holding the flat foil block toward the raider like a priest showing a salt-loaf to a heifer.
“You have been dead since the fourth hour of the watch,” said the scribe, reading a line from the fiftieth column of the tin page. “Your name was registered upon the parish stone at Low-Mallow twenty winters ago. You have paid no burial-tithe on your iron cleaver. Why do you walk upon wet stones when your debt is already entered in the great balance?”
A great coldness struck the soldier’s chest. The red blood in his veins stopped running; it turned to grey tallow inside his arms, and his iron cleaver fell from his hand into the water with a heavy plop. He tried to open his mouth to curse his grandmother, but his tongue was stiff as an oak shingle, and he stood in the rising brine as cold and motionless as a stone boundary-post set in a ditch.
Then Vaelen closed the tin leaves: tock.
He set the lead padlock back into its staple and clicked the lead teeth shut. He laid the nine-pound book flat upon the head of an empty tallow-tub that floated in the dark, and pressed the leaden seal of the quill-and-scale against the greasy wood.
A grey ring of cold fire went out through the cellar. It passed through the stone walls, it passed through the wet kelp, and it went thirty paces out across the gravel spit where three hundred sea-soldiers were waiting with their ladders.
Every man outside who had a sharpened bodkin in his boot or a vial of scorpion-grease in his pouch felt a sharp, iron chime toll inside the marrow of his shin-bones—dang-g-g. Their ears grew cold as sheep-fat, their horses sat down in the sand and refused to pull the wagons, and the captains found that their fingers were so numb that they could not tie the hemp cords to the boat-hooks.
For twenty-one days the water stayed in the lower vaults of Cor-Vael, up to the chins of the wounded men who stood upon the beer-barrels. For twenty-one days the black ships threw pitch against the parapet until the sea-sponge walls were burnt down to the level of the barnacles.
Yet not one sea-soldier could step across the circle of grey frost that sat upon the wet gravel, for whenever an uncertified man touched the line with his boot, his knees turned to stone and his breath came out in flakes of grey lead dust.
And through all those twenty-one days, while the dead men floated by in the dark like long bundles of weed, Vaelen-with-the-Spotted-Thumb sat upon his tallow-tub, with his horn ink-stand between his knees, dipping his iron bone into the soot-water and scratching the eighty-four columns upon the tin foil. He wrote down the name of every boy who died of the scorpion-arrow; he wrote down the weight of his shield, the number of teeth in his jaw, and the two copper pennies that were tied into the corner of his rag-shirt.
When the relief galleons of the High Admiralty arrived from the mainland, their brass rams breaking through the black ships like axes through dried split-wood, the admirals came down into the flooded cellars with sixty lanterns of whale-oil.
They found the walls rotten, the salt-pork ruined, and three hundred drowned men floating in the green slime like dead cod in a seine-net.
But upon the floating tallow-tub, high and dry above the salt froth, sat Vaelen. His coat was covered in green mold, his fingers were as grey as a dried flounder, but upon his knees lay the Lead-Sealed Ledger, smelling of cold tin and ancient tomb-chalk, with every page dry, every line straight, and twenty master-blades of star-iron resting in the weightless dark of its hollow belly, without one speck of rust upon their edges.
The High Admiral, who wore a surcoat of scarlet silk that was worth sixty bullocks, took off his gilded helmet and bowed his neck before the clerk.
“You have kept the fort,” said the admiral, holding his nose against the smell of the dead men.
“I have not kept the fort,” replied Vaelen, wiping the tin foil with the sleeve of his greasy apron. “The fort was made of soft sea-stone and has gone back into the ditch where it belongs. I have kept the ledger. The items in the hollow cavity are certified for probate, and the accounts of the four hundred helmets are balanced to the third part of a groat. Pay the rowers their beer-penny, my Lord, and fetch three dry carts from the ship; for the names are four fathoms long, and the church will have its sheep before the sun goes down behind the island.”
Moral of the story: The stone walls of the greatest bastions are only soft gravel that the sea will one day swallow, and the bravest captains with brass coats must rot into black grease when the scorpion-arrow scratches the skin; yet that which is written upon the beaten tin and locked under the lead seal of the Auditor cannot be washed away by seventy fathoms of salt foam; therefore, do not trust in the thickness of your gate-timbers or the sharpness of your iron cleavers, but see that your debts are set down in straight columns before the water reaches your chin, for death takes the soldier without an inventory, but the Clerk takes the sword from his hand and balances the world upon a cold page.

Any Heretic, infiltrator, or creature bearing concealed assassination weapons or unregistered venom stepping across the boundary trips a psychic clarion bell in the minds of all sleeping allies, immediately rousing them to full consciousness with no surprise penalties.
- Cinerary Audit:As a Combat Action, the bearer presents the open tin leaves toward a Daemon, Psyker, or Undead/Plague creature within 10 meters, reciting the litany of physical termination. The bearer rolls a Willpower (Scholar) test against the target’s Resolve. On a success, the target suffers 10 + 3ED Mortal Wounds and gains the Stunned condition for 1 round.
- Probate Foreclosure:Once per battle, when an allied agent within 10 meters suffers the Dying condition or is reduced to 0 Wounds, the bearer may spend 1 Glory point as a Reaction to slam the ledger shut. For 2 combat rounds, the fallen ally’s body and holy wargear are covered by an inviolable stasis ward, preventing Heretics or warp-entities from harvesting their genetic material, devouring their soul, or looting their equipment.
