Upon entering the guild, the party is greeted by a tall, bespectacled guild clerk named Thalia, who beckons them forward to her well-organized desk.

Registering for the Quest: “Ah, the Merrowdale quest,” Thalia remarks as she pulls out a particular parchment from a stack. She then produces a quill, asking for the names of each party member and any experience they have with smelting or metallurgy. Once details are recorded, she stamps the parchment with a seal, marking their exclusive right to pursue this quest.

Warnings Given:

  • “Be cautious with the smelter. Its current unpredictable state can be dangerous. We’ve heard of a few minor injuries already.”
  • “There’s talk of a curse. While we can’t confirm it, always be on the lookout for anything… unusual or out of place.”
  • “The blacksmith, Eldric, can be a bit… intense. But he’s just worried about his livelihood. Work with him, not against him.”

Preparation Needed:

  • “Make sure you have protection against heat. The smelter, when it flares up, can be incredibly hot.”
  • “If any of you have knowledge or experience in breaking curses or magical anomalies, it might come in handy.”
  • “Equip yourselves with necessary tools. Eldric’s forge will have many, but bringing your own could be beneficial.”

Distance and Duration:

  • “Merrowdale is about a day’s journey to the north. It’s best to leave early to get there before nightfall.”
  • “Depending on the root of the problem, fixing the smelter could take a few hours to a couple of days.”

  • “Apart from Eldric, it might be worth speaking to the town’s elders. They have a wealth of knowledge about Merrowdale’s history and any past incidents with the forge.”
  • “There’s an old sage, Mirella, living on the outskirts of Merrowdale. She’s known for her vast knowledge of curses and might provide insights if that’s indeed the issue.”
  • “Finally, remember to respect the town’s customs and traditions. Merrowdale folks are proud of their crafting heritage.”

Thalia hands the party a small token, “Show this at the Merrowdale gates, and they’ll know you’re on official guild business.” With all details shared, she wishes the party luck and returns to her duties.

Excerpt from: Chapter XIII: In Fires and Fumes of Faldor’s Furnace

Within Faldor’s bounds, by hill and dale,
Where rivers run and strong winds wail,
There lies a forge, in legends’ tale,
Its fire once fierce, now weak and frail.

Sir Cedric, of hands both stout and steady,
With Lady Aria, always ready,
Ventured forth, their pace unheady,
For Faldor’s forge held perils heady.

“Behold!” cried Cedric, as smoke did rise,
A shadowed figure, of great size,
Emerging from the furnace, to their surprise,
With fiery eyes, and angry cries.

The Elemental, from the core of flame,
In the forge’s heart, without a name,
Angry for being part of a game,
Of forging metals, without any claim.

“Peace!” sang Aria, with voice so clear,
“Thou spirit of fire, have naught to fear,
We seek to aid, not to interfere,
With thy molten heart, so near and dear.”

But the forge’s spirit, with rage did swell,
Its fiery breath, a burning knell,
And thus began, as old bards tell,
The great battle, of fire and fell.

In Faldor’s town, where tales unfold,
Of heroes brave, and knights of old,
Sir Cedric and Aria’s tale, is still told,
Of the fiery forge, and the spirit bold.

Guide Manager’s Notes: The Fiery Faldor Forge Adventure!

Hey there, fearless guide! Dive right into this epic quest filled with heated moments and fiery confrontations! Here’s a detailed step-by-step on how to guide your players through the captivating tale of Faldor’s Furnace.

  • Town of Faldor Introduction: Start with a scenic description of Faldor, emphasizing its artisanal history and the prominent forge that stands as its heart. The townspeople’s worry about the forge’s declining fire will be palpable. Drop hints about the forge’s mysterious history.
  • Meeting the Local Blacksmith: The players will encounter the local blacksmith, distraught about the forge’s dwindling flame. The blacksmith will share legends of a powerful spirit residing within the forge and challenge the party to investigate.
  • Research Time: Direct your players to the town’s library or local historian for more insights. They’ll uncover stories of past adventurers who tried (and failed) to communicate with the forge spirit.
  • Preparation: Encourage the party to gear up! This could mean acquiring protective gear against extreme heat or seeking blessings from local temples for protection against the fire elemental.
  • First Encounter: As players approach the furnace for the first time, describe an increase in temperature, the ground getting warmer, and the distant rumble of the elemental. This should build tension!
  • Communication Attempts: The initial attempts to communicate with the elemental should fail, raising the stakes. Let them try different approaches – diplomacy, magic, offerings, etc.
  • Elemental Eruption: After some failed attempts, the elemental makes a grand appearance! Paint the scene with the roar of flames, the ground shaking, and the fiery eyes of the spirit glaring at them.
  • Battle or Diplomacy: Depending on the players’ choices, this could lead to a battle or further negotiation attempts. Remember, the elemental isn’t evil; it’s just upset. Make the confrontation challenging but not impossible!
  • Uncovering the Truth: Mid-confrontation, introduce a plot twist! Maybe the elemental’s anger is due to a relic that was stolen from the forge or perhaps a broken promise from the town’s ancestors. This revelation will give players a new objective.
  • Resolution: Once players address the elemental’s concerns (returning the relic, honoring the old promise, etc.), the forge’s flames return to their former glory. The townsfolk celebrate, and the party is hailed as heroes!
  • Reward and Closure: With the forge restored, the blacksmith crafts a special item for the party. And as the sun sets over Faldor, the players leave, their hearts warm (pun intended) from the adventure!

Remember, the key is to keep the energy up and encourage creativity. Let the players immerse themselves in the world of Faldor and its fiery legend. Have a blast guiding this smokin’ adventure!
