Lunar Equinox Staff of the Sovereign Arbiter 5921

Lore: In the deepest annals of Saṃsāra’s history, an alignment of the cosmos demanded an instrument of absolute cosmic arbitration. The creation of this artifact occurred during a millennium-spanning event known as the Twin Shadow Eclipse, a celestial phenomenon where the gas giant VaporSphere cast a double-layered umbra across the moon. During this period of profound celestial weight, a conclave of high-tier geomancers, Lunar Priests, and Shinto magistrates gathered at the peak of the shattered mountain of Turrath. They sought to forge a singular physical manifestation of absolute balance, healing, and authority to govern the fractured ley lines of the world.

The artificers brought forth the Collapsible Geomantic Staff of Fractured Accord, the quiet heartbeat of the Grain Spiral Amulet of Redemptive Harvest, the commanding bronze of the Kagura 263 of Judicial Harmony, and the concentrated, crystallized essence of two simultaneous Moonlit Resurgence incantations. In the heart of a ley-infused magma forge, beneath the direct gaze of the eclipsed moon, the raw materials were not merely attached to one another but completely transmuted. The obsidian disc, the bronze gavel gears, the telescoping chain-whip segments, and the silver lunar energy melted into a singular, indivisible monolithic structure. The resulting creation was a weapon and a tool of unimaginable authority, designed to enforce the laws of the kami, heal the most devastating of planetary wounds, and reshape the earth with the gentle but unyielding force of a celestial tide.

Description: The Lunar Equinox Staff of the Sovereign Arbiter 5921 is a masterwork of monolithic fusion, existing as a single, seamless physical object. It takes the form of a six-foot telescoping staff forged from an unknown, indestructible alloy of blackened bronze and pure, crystallized moonlight. The shaft is segmented by interlocking gears that sit flush with the surface, allowing the weapon to collapse into a compact cylinder for belt carry or extend with the terrifying, fluid crack of a heavy chain whip.

The mid-grip of the staff is formed from a single, elongated obsidian core that pulses with a steady, dual-toned light—violet for judicial kami harmony and silver for lunar rejuvenation. This core beats in physical time with the wielder’s heart. At the crown, the fractured piston head has been completely integrated with the grain spiral motif, forming a sealed, steam-pressurized striking head adorned with delicate, immovable bronze chimes that are cast directly into the metal. When the internal gear trains are engaged, the entire staff vents a continuous, faint aura of silver-dappled steam that smells sharply of ozone, alpine herbs, and sacred shrine incense. It is a singular implement of pure order, occupying only the hands, yet commanding the elements of earth, machinery, law, and life.

Multiple Passive Magics

  • Tremorsense of the Celestial Oracle: The wielder gains flawless tremorsense up to a range of 300 feet through stone, earth, and metal, instantly identifying the size, speed, and tier level of any moving entity.
  • Aura of the Twin Eclipses: The staff emits a permanent, 60-foot radius aura of soothing silver moonlight. Any ally standing within this aura passively regenerates 5 Health Points at the start of the wielder’s turn, while any hostile action taken within the aura has a 25% chance of failing due to the overwhelming calming resonance of the kami.
  • Indestructible Accord: The monolithic nature of the staff renders it completely immune to corrosion, rust, acid, and all tier-based deterioration. It cannot be sundered or broken by any force below Tier 5.
  • Harmony of the Harvest: The wielder is entirely immune to fear, despair, and psychic manipulation. The faint herbal scent emanating from the staff’s steam permanently fortifies the wielder’s mind, rooting their consciousness in the stability of the earth.

Multiple Active Magics

  • Piston Spin of the Silver Moon (Costs 1 Action): The wielder twists the mid-grip, engaging the internal steam-assisted gear trains. The crown unleashes a 60-foot cone of superheated, ley-infused stone dust and lunar light. Targets in the area take 5d12 bludgeoning damage and 5d12 radiant damage. Any stone or metal struck by this cone is instantly softened to the consistency of clay for 1 hour.
  • Cataclysmic Lunar Resurgence (Costs 1 Action, 1 Use Per Day): Channelling the concentrated power of the double lunar spells, the wielder strikes the base of the staff against the earth. A 100-foot wave of pure, revitalizing eclipse energy washes over the battlefield. Up to 8 chosen avatars within the radius are instantly restored to their maximum Health Points, and any destroyed constructs or broken items within the radius are immediately repaired to full functionality.
  • Gavel of the Sovereign Kami (Costs 1 Action, 3 Uses Per Day): The wielder taps the obsidian core, causing the integrated chimes to ring with deafening authority. Every hostile entity within 120 feet must immediately cease all aggressive actions for 10 minutes. During this time, the wielder gains absolute advantage on any roll to enforce peace, dictate terms of surrender, or banish foes from the territory.
  • Echoes of the Fractured Harvest (Costs 1 Action, 2 Uses Per Day): The wielder slams the piston crown into the ground, commanding the earth to swallow their enemies. The terrain within a 50-foot radius instantly implodes, creating a massive sinkhole of difficult terrain. Simultaneously, threads of alpine magic erupt from the crater, binding and restraining all foes caught within the radius until they can break the kami-infused earthen chains.

Specific Slot: Hands (Occupies the hands slot exclusively, functioning as a Two-Handed Melee/Ranged Hybrid weapon and tool).

Item Durability and Repair Mechanics

  • When an attacker targets the Lunar Equinox Staff of the Sovereign Arbiter 5921 during combat, the weapon becomes exceedingly difficult to strike. The required Armor Check to land a successful blow is calculated by combining the targeted avatar’s current Armor Check, the avatar’s tier level of 5, the result of the avatar’s 5d12 tier dice roll, and the staff’s intrinsic Armor Check of 15.
  • If an attack successfully overcomes this combined threshold, the staff takes a hit and is immediately deactivated, stripping away its attunement and halting all magical functions instantly.
  • To determine the exact amount of damage required to physically break the item and disable its magic long-term, the item’s total hit points must be calculated. The hit points for this tier 5 legendary staff equal the possessing avatar’s maximum hit points plus 50, which is derived from the baseline resilience of 10 multiplied by the tier level of 5.
  • The magical abilities and structural functions of the staff are completely disabled when its hit points are reduced to half or less of its maximum total, rendering the item broken.
  • If sustained attacks reduce the staff to zero hit points, the monolithic fusion fails completely. The item is destroyed and instantly drops its original component parts, separating the bronze, obsidian, and crystallized lunar energy.
  • Items do not regain health points through the passage of time. Physical repairs must be actively performed to restore the structural integrity of the staff.
  • Repairing a broken tier 5 item requires the application of highly specialized crafting skills and the acquisition of extremely rare materials, such as raw rhodium, pure ley-infused obsidian, and concentrated lunar magic, to mend the monolithic alloy.
  • Once the physical hit points of the staff have been restored above the halfway threshold, the item is no longer broken, but it remains inactive.
  • Because the Lunar Equinox Staff of the Sovereign Arbiter 5921 is a held item that has been deactivated by an attack, it cannot be used again until the avatar completes a dedicated ritual attunement. This ritual requires a minimum of 10 uninterrupted minutes of focus to reforge the spiritual connection between the avatar and the item’s celestial magic.

Acquisition and Commercial Exchange of the Sovereign Arbiter 5921

The acquisition of a Tier 5 legendary artifact such as the Lunar Equinox Staff of the Sovereign Arbiter 5921 is an event of global significance within Saṃsāra, as the existence of such an item often influences the political and magical balance of entire island nations. Because only 2% of the population achieves Tier 5 status, this item is never found in standard markets and is generally guarded by high-level magistrates, ancient monastic orders, or the personal guard of a Monarchy.

To obtain this staff, a character must typically engage in a legendary quest involving the synchronization of a double lunar eclipse or the stabilization of a collapsing ley line at the site of a historic cataclysm. It is often awarded by Gaialilith herself or her high-tier ambassadors as a recognition of a character who has achieved a state of absolute judicial and elemental balance. Alternatively, it can be forged through the monolithic merging of its Tier 1 precursors, a process requiring a Tier 5 master artisan and a specialized ley-tap crucible.

The following venues represent the only known locations where an item of this magnitude might be discussed, traded, or commissioned:

  • The Royal Vault of the High Monarchy
    • Description: Located within the central seat of government of the most powerful island countries, these vaults are reinforced with Tier 5 Abjuration domes and guarded by elite battalions. The “shop” is a ceremonial audience chamber where the King or Queen personally oversees the movement of national treasures.
    • How it is Bought/Sold: This item is not bought with coins alone. A buyer must possess a Tier 5 character soul and provide proof of a “Sovereign Endorsement” from at least three other island nations. The transaction is a diplomatic treaty rather than a simple purchase. If the Monarchy chooses to “sell” or grant the item, it is often in exchange for a Rhodium-level blood oath of service to the crown.
    • Cost: 100 Rhodium coins and a signed deed to a Tier 5 extradimensional storage crypt.
  • The Grand Scriptorium of the Lunar Priests
    • Description: An elevated observatory built onto a floating peak that remains in the shadow of VaporSphere. The air is cold and thin, scented with the incense of thousand-year-old lunar rituals. The staff would be displayed on an altar of solid Tidal Glass, pulsing in time with the moon’s transit.
    • How it is Bought/Sold: The priests do not recognize standard currency. To “buy” the staff, one must provide a Tier 5 Magic Crystal the size of a covered wagon and demonstrate the “True Name” of a celestial entity that has been bound to the staff’s lineage. Selling the item to the priests involves a ritual of de-possession where the character’s memories are extracted to verify the item’s redemptive history.
    • Cost: 80 Rhodium coins and one Mapped Seismic Fault Line of an uncharted continent.
  • The World Bank Central Treasury (God-Appointed Exchange)
    • Description: A subterranean megacity made entirely of reinforced bronze and magic circuits. This is the primary center for the god of commerce. The staff is kept in a specialized gravity-neutral chamber where the account balance is verified through the character’s Mind’s Eye.
    • How it is Bought/Sold: This is the most “standard” transaction available for a Tier 5 item. The character must have a verified account with a deposit history exceeding 50,000 gold. The World Bank staff will conduct a 1% transaction fee assessment, which at this level involves a full week of magical auditing.
    • Cost: 150 Rhodium coins (This includes the 1% transaction fee of 1.5 Rhodium).
  • Clandestine Citadel of the Rule Breakers
    • Description: Hidden within a dark cave system where the magic flow is chaotic and wild. This “den” is an industrial fortress where steam-powered machines work in silence. The staff is hidden behind multiple layers of Misdirection magic to show false stats to any prying Mind’s Eye.
    • How it is Bought/Sold: The seller is often a rogue Tier 5 gestalt mind. Access requires a high Renown score and a successful stealth check to locate the entrance. Payment is often made in illicit goods that bypass the Monarchy’s taxes.
    • Cost: 70 Rhodium coins and 10 complete fractured piston blueprints of ancient design.
  • Sky-Accord Zeppelin Flagship
    • Description: A massive, mile-long airship that never lands, serving as a neutral ground for the world’s 73 nations. The “shop” is the Captain’s private gallery, featuring artifacts from across the 183 billion acres of Saṃsāra.
    • How it is Bought/Sold: The item is auctioned through a “Sellers’ Market” protocol where multiple Tier 5 avatars bid in real-time. Because no internet exists, bids are sent via limited telepathy or griffon couriers. The “Buyer Beware” rule is strictly enforced; the Captain provides no guarantee against the “Overwhelm” debuff if the buyer’s Mind’s Eye is insufficient.
    • Cost: Starting bid of 120 Rhodium coins.
  • The Shadowed Reef Deep-Grotto
    • Description: A bioluminescent coral vault in the deep ocean, accessible only to aquatic avatars or those with high-tier environmental gear. The pressure is immense, and the staff is kept in a pressurized bubble chamber.
    • How it is Bought/Sold: The broker requires “Life-Debt” tokens or the delivery of rare alchemical pellets from the Sunstone Shallows. If selling, the broker may try to “possess” the item’s memories to ensure no character marks (like Banishment) remain on the artifact.
    • Cost: 90 Rhodium coins and 5 units of crystal gear trains.

Tactical Manifestation of the Sovereign Arbiter 5921

In the high-magic, steam-driven landscapes of Saṃsāra, wielding an object of this magnitude transforms the environment into a structured extension of the wielder’s intent. Because the Lunar Equinox Staff of the Sovereign Arbiter 5921 integrates the essence of the Shinto kami, the lunar eclipse, and the redemptive earth, its use is as much a ritual as it is a combat maneuver.

Urban Megacities and Trade Courts

The environment is defined by towering steam-powered skyscrapers, crowded judicial plazas, and intricate clockwork infrastructure.

  • Defensive Roleplay:
    • During a massive civil uprising or a mechanical sabotage of a city’s primary steam turbine, the wielder plants the staff’s base into the stone. The Aura of the Twin Eclipses instantly spreads a 60-foot silver shroud, calming the physiological heart rates of the rioters and reducing their aggression by 25%.
    • If a skyscraper’s structural integrity is compromised by an explosion, the wielder uses Plough Bind to touch the main support beam. The staff exhales threads of obsidian and alpine soil that knit the fractured metal, granting the building 10 minutes of collapse immunity while civilians evacuate.
  • Offensive Roleplay:
    • To subdue a corrupt guild leader protected by a legion of steam-constructs, the wielder activates the Gavel of the Sovereign Kami. The chimes ring with a deafening, harmonic frequency that forces the constructs to freeze mid-motion as the kami demand order.
    • The wielder then uses the Piston Spin of the Silver Moon, unleashing a cone of superheated stone dust that scours the leader’s enchanted armor into rusted flakes, softening the very ground beneath the guards to trap them in clay-like sludge.

Jungle Ruins and Ancient Terraces

These areas are thick with bioluminescent flora, humid ley line vents, and the crumbling remains of Turrath’s old civilizations.

  • Defensive Roleplay:
    • When ambushed by feral megafauna, the wielder utilizes the Tremorsense of the Celestial Oracle to detect the underground movement of giant burrowing insects 300 feet away.
    • As a defensive wall, they trigger the Echoes of the Fractured Harvest, slamming the staff down to implode the jungle floor in front of the party. This creates a 50-foot sinkhole that swallows the charging beasts, while the herbal steam from the staff protects the party from the toxic spores released by the jungle’s agitated fungi.
  • Offensive Roleplay:
    • Against a sentinel spirit guarding a ruin, the wielder uses Ley Accord Surge. The staff extends into its chain-whip configuration, lashing out with 60 feet of reach.
    • Upon impact, the Piston Spin erupts, not just damaging the spirit but softening the ancient stone monoliths it uses for cover. The wielder then commands the stone to reshape, pinning the spirit against the ruin’s walls with earthen chains.

Floating Cities and Zeppelin Docks

These precarious environments involve high altitudes, high-velocity winds, and a reliance on levitation circuits.

  • Defensive Roleplay:
    • If an airship’s levitation core is struck by lightning, the wielder uses Master Mechanism Redemption to instantly identify which gears have slipped. They touch the core, and the staff’s internal gear trains sync with the ship, realigning the machinery with a harmonic hum.
    • In a fall from a high catwalk, the wielder collapses the staff into its whip form and hooks a distant strut, the Indestructible Accord ensuring the weapon never snaps under the weight of multiple avatars.
  • Offensive Roleplay:
    • During a boarding action by sky-pirates, the wielder activates Cataclysmic Lunar Resurgence. Instead of healing, the silver wave of energy is focused to “realign” the pirates’ own steam-gear, causing their weapons to jam or vent steam back onto the users.
    • The wielder then uses the Gavel of the Sovereign Kami to project a voice of absolute authority across the windy docks, commanding the pirates to leap from the vessel into the clouds.

Underwater Settlements and Coral Vaults

These domes are subject to extreme pressure, bioluminescent currents, and localized geothermal vents.

  • Defensive Roleplay:
    • If a coral dome suffers a “Deathly Area” breach where the ocean pressure threatens to crush everything, the wielder slams the staff against the fracture. Plough Bind seals the critical gap with reinforced obsidian threads, holding back the weight of the endless ocean for 10 minutes.
    • The Aura of the Twin Eclipses provides a 60-foot bubble of silver light, allowing allies to see clearly through the murk while regenerating their health as they fight off deep-sea monsters.
  • Offensive Roleplay:
    • Against an encroaching swarm of feral krakens, the wielder uses the Piston Spin of the Silver Moon. In the water, the superheated stone dust creates a localized underwater explosion of steam and grit, blinding the creatures and scouring their rubbery hides.
    • The Harmony of the Harvest ensures the wielder remains immune to the psychic “Infrasound” cries of the monsters, allowing them to maintain focus while their allies might otherwise fall to despair.

Dark Cave Systems and Subterranean Megacities

Low-light environments filled with echoing sounds, metallic ores, and vertical shafts.

  • Defensive Roleplay:
    • The Vibration Oracle pulses constantly against the wielder’s palm, providing a darkvision-equivalent perception of the tunnel walls. When a seismic shift is detected, the wielder warns the party seconds before a cave-in occurs.
    • If a party member is wounded by a venomous cave-crawler, the Cataclysmic Lunar Resurgence is used to wash the tunnel in silver light, neutralizing the toxin and fully restoring the ally’s vitality instantly.
  • Offensive Roleplay:
    • The wielder uses Echoes of the Fractured Harvest to collapse the ceiling onto a group of bandits. Because the wielder has Eclipse Geomancy, they can choose exactly which stone pillars to “soften,” causing a controlled collapse that buries the foes without trapping the wielder.
    • The Gavel of the Sovereign Kami hums through the enclosed cavern, the sound amplified by the stone, paralyzing the bandits with the weight of judicial authority before a single physical blow is even struck.

Perception of Activation:

  • User’s Perspective
    • Sight: The moment you twist the mid-grip, the gear trains inside the shaft engage with a blinding silver-blue flare. The obsidian core beneath your hands ignites with a violent violet pulse that rhythms perfectly with your own heart. As the staff extends, the piston crown at the head glows white-hot, venting thick, swirling plumes of steam that carry the crystalline shimmer of a lunar eclipse. Kami figures, translucent and stern, manifest in the steam, bowing as they weave around your arms.
    • Sound: A deep, resonant boom like a distant tectonic shift echoes through the staff, followed by the high-pitched, authoritative ringing of the bronze chimes. The internal gears grind with the sound of a mountain-sized clock being wound. As the steam vents, a low, melodic Shinto chant seems to vibrate directly into your ears, drowning out the chaos of the environment.
    • Touch: The obsidian grip warms significantly, vibrating with a steady “thrum-thrum” that feels like holding a living heart. A cold, tingly lunar energy washes up your arms, numbing pain while simultaneously sharpening your reflexes. The superheated stone dust feels gritty against your skin, yet you feel no burn, only the raw power of the ley lines flowing through the bronze.
    • Smell: A sharp, complex aroma of ionized ozone, sacred shrine incense, and fresh alpine herbs (rosemary and mint) fills your lungs, instantly clearing your mind of fatigue.
    • Taste: A metallic, coppery tang of molten bronze sits on your tongue, followed by the clean, crisp taste of high-altitude glacial water.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
      • Seismic Synchronization: You feel the weight of the entire island country beneath your feet; the earth’s strata become as transparent as glass to your mind.
      • Judicial Clarity: Every lie spoken within 100 feet manifests as a sour, discordant note in your subconscious.
      • Celestial Tether: You feel an invisible cord connecting your soul to the gas giant VaporSphere, pulling your gravity slightly upward and making you feel lighter than air.
  • Observer’s Perspective
    • Sight: The wielder is suddenly wreathed in a 60-foot aura of shimmering, silver-blue moonlight that turns the environment into a surreal, twilight landscape. The staff telescopes out with a series of metallic clacks, its head venting a massive cloud of steam that takes the shapes of ancient, judge-like spirits. The wielder’s eyes glow with the same violet hue as the staff’s obsidian core.
    • Sound: A wave of absolute silence precedes the activation, followed by a chime so clear and commanding that it compels the observer to stand still. The grinding of the gears sounds like a steam locomotive passing directly by, yet it is oddly harmonious.
    • Touch: Those standing nearby feel a sudden drop in temperature followed by a wave of comforting, herbal warmth. The air feels “thick” with magical pressure, making it slightly harder to move against the wielder’s direction.
    • Extra-Sensory Perceptions:
      • Awe and Compliance: Observers feel an instinctive urge to kneel or lower their weapons, as if standing in the presence of a high magistrate and a god simultaneously.
      • Spiritual Weight: A heavy sense of “truth” permeates the area; those with guilty consciences feel a physical pressure on their chests.
  • Positives
    • The activation provides total sensory immersion, granting the wielder absolute awareness of their surroundings through tremorsense and material intuition.
    • The rejuvenating aura instantly stabilizes the wielder’s biology, providing a surge of confidence and mental fortitude that negates fear.
    • The authoritative resonance of the chimes and kami figures creates an immediate psychological advantage, often ending conflicts before physical force is required.
  • Negatives
    • The sensory input is overwhelming; the wielder may experience a “seismic headache” for several minutes after the staff is deactivated.
    • The scent of alpine herbs and the silver glow are impossible to conceal, making stealth a complete impossibility once the device is engaged.
    • The taste of copper and the metallic vibration can lead to a temporary loss of appetite or a lingering “phantom pulse” in the hands for several hours post-use.
    • Over-resonance with the kami spirits risks a brief period of “Divine Dissociation,” where the wielder may struggle to distinguish their own memories from the ancient history of Turrath.

MOON-EQUAL STICK OF HIGHEST DECIDER 5921

In the days of the very old before-times, when the big sky-gas-ball VaporSphere ate the warm-star Helios not once but two times in the same blink of the sky-eye, the world was heavy. The dirt was sick, and the unseen breath-spirits of the law were crying in the steam. The people of the seventy and three floating dirts were looking to the Earth-Mother Gaialilith, but she was sleeping in the deep rock. The magic water of the world was flowing in the wrong paths. It was decided by the men of big thoughts that a new holding-thing must be cooked in the fire of the earth to make the law and the healing speak from one mouth.

Three walkers of the high paths came to the top of Turrath, the mountain of the great mistake, where the stone still bleeds the red heat. The wind was much angry, biting the skins of the walkers. The first walker was a man of the stone-spinners. He carried the bronze snake of the broken handshake. In the old tongue, this was the folding dirt-magic wood that spits the hot rock-dust. It was a heavy sadness to carry, for it remembered the falling of the tall houses.

The second walker was a woman of the tear-counters. Around her breathing-tube she wore the seed-circle neck-stone of the forgiven crop. It had the little wheel of teeth that ticked when the broken iron was made happy again. She walked with the smell of the high mountain weeds, and her chest was warm with the magic of the deep dirt.

The third walker was a keeper of the standing-still. He wore the uniform of the loud court, and in his hand was the small hand-hammer of the dancing law-quiet. It was made of the bronze from the drowned boat and the black glass of the volcano tear. It made the ring-ring noise that tells the bad men to sit down and be quiet.

With these three came the watchers of the white sky-rock. They brought two folded skins of the moon-shine wake-up magic. This was the magic that only breathes when the moon is hiding in the black shadow. Because the sky-gas-ball was making the double shadow, the magic in the folded skins was dripping like silver water, wanting to heal the broken mountain.

They stood at the big cup of the world-vein, where the ley-blood of the earth bubbles hot and bright. The stone-spinner threw the bronze snake of the broken handshake into the big cup. The metal screamed like a dying bird and melted into a puddle of angry brown water. Then the tear-counter took the seed-circle neck-stone from her breathing-tube and threw it into the angry brown water. The little wheel of teeth stopped ticking and melted, making the brown water turn smooth and thick like the mud of a good farm.

Then the keeper of the standing-still threw the small hand-hammer of the dancing law-quiet into the cup. The unseen breath-spirits yelled in the steam. The bronze of the drowned boat mixed with the other bronze, and the black glass floated to the middle, drinking all the heat.

Last, the watchers of the white sky-rock poured the two folded skins of the moon-shine wake-up magic over the cup. The sky flashed with purple light. The double shadow of the moon pushed down on the mountain. The silver water of the moon hit the hot bronze and the black glass. The smell of angry air and sacred burning-weeds filled the noses of the walkers. The sound was like a giant clock of the gods ticking for the first time.

The stone-spinner reached his hand, covered in the magic of the cold earth, into the big cup. He pulled out the new holding-thing. It was a single stick of long metal, black and shiny, but holding the silver light inside it. It was not many things anymore. It was one thing. The gear-wheels were trapped in the metal, flush and flat, turning without touching. The black glass was now the middle-hold, beating like a meat-heart in the chest of a beast. The top of the stick had the broken pushing-head, but it was sealed tight, with the small bells of the law baked right into the bronze.

When the stone-spinner held it, the stick grew long with a loud clacking sound, like the bones of a giant snake snapping into place. Steam poured from the top, smelling of the mountain weeds and the heavy truth. The unseen breath-spirits bowed in the steam.

But then, the mountain shook. A feral crawler of the deep dark, a beast with many legs and a mouth of breaking-stone, smelled the cooking of the magic and came up from the dirt. It was as big as a floating ship. It wanted to eat the walkers and the new stick. It roared, and the sound made the rocks turn to sand.

The stone-spinner did not run. He held the middle-hold of black glass. He felt the heavy law of the kami-spirits and the soft healing of the moon in his hands. He slammed the bottom of the stick against the top of the mountain. A wave of silver light washed over the dirt. The light hit the feral crawler.

The magic of the stick did a strange work. The hot rock-dust sprayed from the top, softening the armor of the beast into wet clay. At the same time, the hand-hammer magic of the loud court yelled a silent command into the brain of the beast, telling it that breaking the mountain was against the rules of the sky. And finally, the double moon-shine wake-up magic flooded the beast, healing the hunger and the anger out of its feral blood.

The beast stopped roaring. Its clay armor hardened into a beautiful, peaceful shell of quiet stone. It bowed its many legs to the stick and went back into the deep dark to sleep and hold the mountain together.

The walkers saw that the stick was too much heavy for normal hands. It held the power to tell the earth what to do, to tell the bad men to stop, and to fix the broken life all at once. They wrapped it in the silk of the sea-spiders and carried it down the mountain. They gave it to the high kings of the large chairs, telling them to only bring it out when the world was breaking again. It was named the moon-equal stick of the highest decider.

MORAL OF THE STORY: THE MANY BROKEN THINGS BURNED TOGETHER ARE HEAVIER THAN THE UNBROKEN THING, BUT THE LIGHT OF THE HIDING MOON CAN CURE THE ANGER OF THE DEEP DIRT AND MAKE THE BAD BUG SLEEP.
