Appraisal (level 2):
When attuned, using an action, an avatar can utilize the Appraisal ability at a level equal to or lower than the level permitted by their worn item. Each casting of Appraisal consumes one charge per tier level of the caster plus any additional charges they wish to contribute. Items that possess the Appraisal feature have a designated number of charges specified on them, normally ten charges per day. Charges replenished daily at dawn.
- (Caster must be Tier 3 or above) When casting appraisal on a character soul the information shown is the name of the character, maximum health points and 10 highest skills. Casting appraisal on a character also lists the latest 10 active curses on the character. However, when dealing with concealment, Appraisal may provide inaccurate information unless the charges used to cast the spell “Appraisal” was one greater than the concealments tier level.
- (Caster must be Tier 2 or above) When casting appraisal on an avatar the information shown is the name of the avatar and number of items worn. Also reviled is one simple passive attribute for each item the avatar has activated (attuned). However, when dealing with concealment, Appraisal may provide inaccurate information unless the charges used to cast the spell “Appraisal” was one greater than the concealments tier level.
- (Caster must be Tier 1 or above) When targeting an item, the spell “Appraisal” enables the caster to discern information about the item. If the item’s tier level is equal to or lower than the level of the casting, the spell unveils its details. However, when dealing with concealment or cursed items, Appraisal may provide inaccurate information unless the charges used to cast the spell “Appraisal” was one greater than the item’s tier level.

- Defensive Roleplay
- Urban Environment:
- Roleplay: In the bustling cities and towns of Saṃsāra, where political intrigue and hidden dangers are common, the Crystal Lens of Detection can be a vital tool for defense. The wearer can use the lens to scan for hidden magical traps or wards in important buildings, such as palaces, guild halls, or marketplaces. - Example: While attending a high-stakes negotiation in a city council chamber, the wearer might discreetly use the lens to scan the room, revealing an invisible assassin lurking in the shadows, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. The wearer can then alert the guards or take action to prevent the attack, ensuring the safety of themselves and others.
- Wilderness Environment:
- Roleplay: In the wilds of Saṃsāra, where magical beasts and ancient ruins abound, the Crystal Lens of Detection can help the wearer avoid or prepare for hidden threats. The lens can reveal the presence of ethereal creatures, such as spirits or elementals, that may be guarding sacred groves, forgotten temples, or ancient burial sites. It can also detect hidden magical traps left by previous adventurers or long-dead civilizations.
- Example: While exploring an ancient forest, the wearer might use the lens to detect a magical trap hidden among the roots of a massive tree. By carefully observing the trap’s aura, they can disarm it or safely guide their companions around it, avoiding a potentially deadly encounter.
- Magical and Mystical Locations:
- Roleplay: In places saturated with arcane energy, such as floating cities, ancient towers, or chaos dungeons, the Crystal Lens of Detection is invaluable for navigating the complex magical defenses and hidden dangers. The lens can reveal the true nature of illusions, allowing the wearer to see through false walls, disguised pathways, or hidden compartments. It also aids in identifying cursed or enchanted objects that may pose a threat if handled carelessly.
- Example: Within a chaos dungeon, where reality is constantly shifting, the wearer can use the lens to perceive the true layout of the dungeon, revealing safe passages or uncovering hidden caches of treasure. This allows the wearer to avoid pitfalls and traps, ensuring their survival in the treacherous environment.
- Urban Environment:
- Offensive Roleplay
- Combat Against Invisible or Ethereal Foes:
- Roleplay: In battles against enemies that can turn invisible, shift between planes, or use magic to conceal themselves, the Crystal Lens of Detection gives the wearer a significant advantage. By using the lens, the wearer can spot these hidden foes and direct attacks or spells with precision, turning the tide of battle in their favor.
- Example: During a skirmish with a band of rogue wizards, one of whom turns invisible to gain the upper hand, the wearer can use the lens to reveal the wizard’s position, allowing their allies to target the enemy with spells or ranged attacks, neutralizing the threat before it can cause serious harm.
- Unveiling Hidden Traps and Enemies:
- Roleplay: The lens can be used offensively to disrupt enemy strategies by revealing traps, ambushes, or hidden reinforcements. In tactical situations, the wearer can scout ahead using the lens to identify and disable traps set by the enemy, or to spot hidden archers or spellcasters lying in wait.
- Example: While leading an assault on a fortified position, the wearer might use the lens to detect a series of magical traps laid by the defenders. By identifying the traps, the wearer can either disarm them or redirect their own forces to avoid them, allowing for a more direct and effective assault on the enemy stronghold.
- Countering Illusions in Combat:
- Roleplay: In battles where illusions play a critical role, the Crystal Lens of Detection can be used to expose false images or misleading terrain created by enemy spellcasters. This ability allows the wearer and their allies to focus their attacks on real threats and navigate the battlefield with greater confidence.
- Example: Facing an illusionist who has conjured multiple illusory duplicates of themselves, the wearer uses the lens to identify the true caster, allowing their allies to focus their attacks and quickly end the battle. The ability to see through the illusion grants the wearer a strategic edge, minimizing confusion and chaos during the fight.
- Combat Against Invisible or Ethereal Foes:
- Dual Roleplay (Defense and Offense)
- Magical Artifact Retrieval:
- Roleplay: The wearer can use the lens to both defend against traps and offensively identify valuable artifacts in ancient ruins or dungeons. By detecting hidden wards or curses on artifacts, the wearer can safely retrieve them and, if necessary, use them against their enemies.
- Example: Exploring a long-abandoned temple, the wearer finds a powerful enchanted weapon concealed by illusionary magic. Using the lens, they reveal the weapon’s true nature, bypass its defensive wards, and claim it for themselves. Later, this weapon can be used to turn the tide of battle against a formidable opponent.
- Negotiations and Social Encounters:
- Roleplay: In social settings, the lens can be used to detect magical influences on others, such as mind-control spells or enchanted items that might sway decisions. This knowledge allows the wearer to defend against manipulation while also using the information offensively in negotiations.
- Example: During a tense diplomatic meeting, the wearer uses the lens to detect that one of the envoys is under a charm spell, their mind manipulated by a rival faction. Armed with this knowledge, the wearer can expose the deception, turning the tables on their adversaries and gaining the upper hand in the negotiations.
- Magical Artifact Retrieval:
The Crystal Lens of Detection provides the wearer with both defensive and offensive capabilities in a variety of environments, making it a versatile and powerful tool for those who seek to navigate the magical and dangerous world of Saṃsāra.

- Hearing
- What’s Perceived: A faint, almost imperceptible hum emanates from the lens as it activates. This hum resonates with the ambient magical energy in the environment, growing louder or softer depending on the concentration of magic nearby. The wearer may also hear soft whispers or echoes as the lens detects hidden spells or magical traps.

- Positives: The taste acts as a sensory cue that the lens is actively detecting or interacting with magic, helping the wearer to better gauge the intensity of the magical forces around them.
- Negatives: The metallic taste can become unpleasant over time, leading to a dry mouth or a bitter aftertaste that lingers even after the lens is deactivated. This may distract the wearer or affect their concentration.
- Smell

- Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- Arcane Awareness
- What’s Perceived: The wearer experiences a heightened sense of awareness, allowing them to perceive the flow of magical energy as streams of light or waves of color in their peripheral vision. This awareness extends to subtle shifts in the environment, such as the presence of hidden wards, the activation of a magical trap, or the approach of an invisible entity.
- Description: The wearer can visualize the interconnected web of magic that underlies reality, with the lens acting as a conduit for this deeper perception. The flow of magic is seen as vibrant, dynamic patterns that pulse in time with the wearer’s focus.
- Positives: This heightened awareness allows the wearer to anticipate magical effects, detect subtle changes in the environment, and react quickly to magical threats.
- Negatives: The constant influx of arcane information can be overwhelming, leading to sensory overload or confusion. The wearer may also struggle to distinguish between the magical and mundane, especially in areas with high magical saturation.
- Clairvoyance
- What’s Perceived: Through the lens, the wearer occasionally glimpses brief visions of distant or hidden events, objects, or beings. These visions are fleeting and often symbolic, providing insights into the location or nature of concealed magical artifacts or threats.
- Description: The visions are like flashes of light or fragmented images that appear in the lens’s view. They offer clues or warnings, guiding the wearer toward hidden dangers or revealing secrets that would otherwise remain obscured.
- Positives: The ability to perceive these visions can give the wearer a strategic advantage, allowing them to uncover hidden objectives or avoid potential pitfalls.
- Negatives: The visions can be disorienting or cryptic, leaving the wearer unsure of their meaning or relevance. Misinterpreting a vision could lead to confusion or misjudgment in critical situations.
- Mystical Insight
- What’s Perceived: The lens provides the wearer with an intuitive understanding of the magical forces at work, allowing them to decipher complex spells, recognize the origins of enchantments, or identify the nature of magical beings with uncanny accuracy.
- Description: This insight is like a second layer of perception, where the wearer can ‘read’ the magical energy around them as easily as reading a book. Symbols, runes, and other arcane markings become clear, and the wearer gains an almost instinctual grasp of their significance.
- Positives: This ability allows the wearer to make informed decisions when dealing with magical objects or entities, greatly enhancing their ability to navigate complex magical scenarios.
- Negatives: The depth of this insight can be overwhelming, leading to headaches, fatigue, or even temporary lapses in focus as the wearer processes the vast amount of information presented to them.
- Arcane Awareness
The Crystal Lens of Detection offers a powerful, multi-sensory experience when activated, greatly enhancing the wearer’s ability to perceive and interact with the magical world. However, these abilities come with their own set of challenges, requiring careful management to avoid sensory overload or other negative effects.
Crafting Recipe: Crystal Lens of Detection
- Materials Needed:
- Dragon Crystal Shard:
- 1 shard of dragon crystal (harvested from a dragon’s lair or purchased from a rare artifacts merchant)
- 2 ounces of powdered star sapphire (to enhance the lens’s clarity and magical resonance)
- Arcane-Infused Metal Frame:
- 1 ingot of Mithril or Adamantine (lightweight and highly conductive to magic)
- 1 vial of Liquid Aether (distilled from an ancient ley line or crafted using high-level alchemy)
- 3 strands of Celestial Thread (for binding the frame to the lens)
- Enchantment Essences:
- 1 vial of Essence of True Sight (collected from a creature with the ability to see through illusions)
- 2 drops of Etheric Essence (extracted from the heart of an ethereal being)
- 1 ounce of Arcane Dust (collected from ancient enchanted ruins)
- Dragon Crystal Shard:
- Tools Required:
- Jewelcrafter’s Set (including fine chisels and gemstone shaping tools)
- Arcane Forge (for melting and shaping the metal frame)
- Enchanter’s Anvil (to bind the magical properties into the lens)
- Infusion Gauntlets (for safely handling and infusing the enchantment essences)
- Sigil Engraver (for inscribing runes onto the metal frame)
- Crystal Lens Polisher (for achieving the necessary clarity and resonance in the dragon crystal)
- Skill Requirements:
- Mastery in Jewelcrafting (to shape and set the dragon crystal)
- Proficiency in Enchantment (to properly infuse the lens with its magical properties)
- Advanced Alchemy Knowledge (to prepare and handle the rare essences)
- Expert-level Metalworking (to craft and shape the delicate metal frame)
- Rune Carving Expertise (to inscribe the necessary runes for detection and clarity)
- Crafting Steps:
- Prepare the Dragon Crystal Lens:
- Start by carefully shaping the dragon crystal shard into a convex lens using the Jewelcrafter’s Set. The lens should be clear and smooth, with a slight bluish tint. Dust the lens with the powdered star sapphire to enhance its clarity and magical resonance, ensuring that the lens is perfectly symmetrical and free of imperfections.
- Forge the Metal Frame:
- Melt the Mithril or Adamantine ingot in the Arcane Forge, mixing in the Liquid Aether as the metal reaches its peak temperature. This will imbue the metal with the ability to conduct magical energies. Once the metal is fully liquefied and infused, pour it into a mold that has been prepared on the Enchanter’s Anvil. Shape the metal into a delicate frame designed to hold the lens securely while allowing the flow of magic through it.
- Weave the Binding Threads:
- Using the Celestial Thread, carefully weave a delicate binding around the edges of the lens. This binding will attach the lens to the metal frame without disrupting the flow of arcane energy. Ensure that the threads are taut and evenly spaced, as any imbalance could affect the lens’s ability to detect magical auras accurately.
- Infuse the Enchantment Essences:
- Place the bound lens and frame onto the Enchanter’s Anvil. Using the Infusion Gauntlets, carefully apply the Essence of True Sight, Etheric Essence, and Arcane Dust to the lens. Allow each essence to seep into the crystal, bonding with its structure and imbuing it with the ability to see through illusions and detect ethereal beings. This step requires precise timing and a steady hand to ensure that the essences are absorbed evenly and fully.
- Inscribe the Runes:
- With the lens securely bound to the frame and infused with magical essences, use the Sigil Engraver to carve arcane runes into the metal frame. These runes will channel the lens’s detection abilities, enhancing its power to reveal hidden magical auras and traps. The runes must be inscribed with precision, following ancient patterns that resonate with the lens’s properties. Mistakes in this step could lead to flawed detection abilities or even backfire when the lens is used.
- Final Polishing and Empowerment:
- Place the completed lens in the Crystal Lens Polisher and refine its surface until it achieves the necessary clarity and resonance. This step is crucial to ensuring that the lens can accurately detect magical auras without distortion. Once polished, place the lens under the light of a full moon or within a circle of arcane power to empower it, activating its detection abilities. Allow the lens to absorb this energy for a full night, finalizing the crafting process.
- Prepare the Dragon Crystal Lens:
Result: The Crystal Lens of Detection is now fully crafted, radiating a faint, ethereal glow and pulsing with arcane energy. The wearer can use the lens to reveal hidden magical auras, detect invisible or ethereal creatures, and see through illusions with precision. This powerful tool is highly sought after by adventurers, scholars, and those who navigate the magical world of Saṃsāra, offering unparalleled insight and protection in a world filled with mystical dangers.
Tale of the Shining Glass That Sees All Hidden
Long ago, in the age when stars still whispered to the mountains, there was a tale told of the Shining Glass, which was not like other glass. This was no simple thing made by mortal hands, but a gift from the Dragons of the Sky, who saw all that was hidden beneath the earth and beyond the clouds. The Shining Glass was said to be carved from the heart of a dragon’s tear, solidified into crystal by the breath of the oldest wind.
The story begins with a wanderer, a seeker of truths, who traveled the lands far and wide. The seeker’s name is forgotten, lost in the winds of time, but the tale remembers that this one sought what could not be seen, what lay beneath the surface of the world. The seeker was driven by a thirst for knowledge, for the unseen threads that wove the fabric of existence.
One day, the seeker came upon a high mountain, where the air was thin and the ground was cold. Here, the seeker found an ancient shrine, long abandoned and overgrown with the roots of forgotten trees. Inside the shrine was a pedestal, and upon the pedestal lay the Shining Glass, glowing faintly with a light that seemed to come from within. The seeker knew, in the way that all stories know, that this was no ordinary glass.
The seeker took the glass and held it to the eye, and at once the world changed. Through the glass, the seeker saw what was hidden—buried treasures, lost spirits, and the glowing lines of magic that crisscrossed the earth. The seeker saw through the illusions cast by the shadows, saw the truth behind the lies of men, and the traps laid by those who sought power through deceit.
With the Shining Glass, the seeker became wise, seeing all that others could not. But as the days turned to nights, and the nights to years, the seeker found that knowledge was not always a blessing. For with the truth came sorrow, and with sight came the burden of what was seen. The seeker saw the pain hidden behind smiles, the despair masked by laughter, and the shadows that lurked in every heart.
In time, the seeker became weary, for the glass revealed too much. The truth was heavy, and the visions unending. The seeker, who had once sought knowledge above all else, now sought peace. But the glass would not allow it, for it was bound to the seeker’s soul, feeding on the desire to see, to know, to uncover what was hidden.
The tale ends as all such tales do, with the seeker returning to the mountain where the journey began. The seeker placed the Shining Glass back upon the pedestal, where it began to glow even brighter, as if pleased to return to its resting place. The seeker, now blind to the world’s illusions, walked away, never to be seen again.
Moral of the Story: To see all is to bear the weight of all truths, and not all truths are meant to be known. The light that reveals can also blind, and the burden of knowledge is a heavy one to carry. Seek what is hidden, but beware of the cost, for in the end, it may be more than one can bear.
