The god of the hunt then presented the Horse King with a harness, made of leather from the hide of a beast that roamed the stars and silver forged in the fires of the earth’s core. The bit was engraved with symbols of power, and the bridle was adorned with stones that gleamed like the eyes of the god himself. The Horse King accepted the gift, placing the harness upon his head, and in that moment, he felt the power of the wild surge through him.
With the harness, the Horse King commanded the creatures of the plains, calling them to his side with but a word. The beasts of the land, great and small, obeyed his voice, and his enemies fled before the might of his spirit. His people, the half-beasts, prospered, their lands expanding as they followed the wisdom and strength of their king.
But as with all gifts from the gods, the harness carried a weight. The power it granted was not without cost. The Horse King, once a creature of the earth, began to feel the pull of the heavens. His dreams were filled with the voices of the stars, calling him away from his people, whispering promises of eternal glory. Torn between his duty and the call of the gods, the Horse King’s heart grew heavy.
One day, when the sun hid behind dark clouds and the winds howled with a voice of sorrow, the Horse King vanished. His people searched the plains and the forests, the mountains and the rivers, but he was nowhere to be found. All that remained was the harness, lying at the foot of an ancient tree, its silver tarnished and its stones dim.
The half-beasts mourned their lost king, and the harness was taken to the sacred place where the spirits of the earth were strongest. There it was kept, passed down through the generations, from one chieftain to the next, a symbol of leadership, strength, and the burdens that come with power. It is said that those who wear the harness can still hear the whisper of the Horse King, guiding them in times of need, but also warning them of the dangers that come with wielding such power.
Moral of the Story: Power is a gift that binds, not only to the earth but to the heavens as well. To lead is to carry the weight of both, and one must be wary of the pull of the gods, for what is given can also take away.
