Lore
Legends whisper of an oathbound sage who once walked Saṃsāra’s forgotten pilgrimage roads, carrying both the constellation-bound band of companionship and the spiral-etched pendant of divine resonance. In a moment of great trial—when armies faltered and hierarchies broke—he bound their powers together. The result was not simply guidance nor ascendance, but a fusion of unity and authority: a relic that made companions rise into leaders and leaders rise into companions. Known today as Contract 944 of the Ascendant Steps, this item resonates with the bonds between allies and the spiral pathways of spiritual ascent. Those who bear it are never truly alone, for their voice carries the weight of unity and their companions echo like constellations in the night.

Description
A leather wristband, reinforced with silent-worm silk thread, now carries an inset spiral pendant forged of pale bronze and bone-silver. The constellation rune glows faintly, shifting with each breath, while tiny Hebrew glyphs shimmer within the spiral’s incomplete coil. When activated, both spiral and constellation ignite in harmony, the band projecting a subtle aura of companionship woven with divine authority. It feels simultaneously grounding and uplifting, like a tether to both allies and higher order.

Passive Magics

  1. Constellation of Hierarchy – The wearer senses the “lines of connection” between companions and social groups, granting +1 to Persuasion, Insight, or Leadership checks when guiding allies or negotiating hierarchies.
  2. Silent Bond – While worn, all allies within 20 ft. feel an unspoken connection, granting +1 morale bonus to saving throws against fear or domination effects.
  3. Echoed Steps – When part of a group, the wearer can always sense the general direction of allies within 100 ft., even through darkness or obstacles.

Active Magics

  1. Companion’s Ascendant Call (1/day) – At half HP or lower, the wearer may summon a spectral companion (as per Guiding Band) for a number of rounds equal to tier. However, this echo radiates Spiral Voice resonance, causing nearby enemies to make a Wisdom/Will save (DC 13) or treat the spectral companion as a higher authority figure, hesitating or redirecting their attacks for 1 round.
  2. Step of Unity (1/day, Bonus Action) – For 10 minutes, the wearer’s words carry amplified authority. All Persuasion, Intimidation, and Performance checks with allies or followers are made with advantage, and allies within 30 ft. gain +1 to attack rolls when fighting cooperatively.
  3. Numerical Revelation (2 charges/day) – As an action, the wearer targets a creature within 30 ft. The target must succeed on a Charisma save (DC 14) or reveal a symbolic truth or ambition, which the wearer immediately understands. If the target fails critically, they also suffer disadvantage on their next saving throw against compulsion or intimidation.

Specific Slot
Wristband — counts as a single worn magical item. The pendant and band are inseparable; if one is broken, both are rendered inert until repaired.

Item Hit Points (HP) to Disable Magic
Contract 944 of the Ascendant Steps possesses 30 HP as a sturdy rare-tier artifact. If targeted directly by focused attacks (physical or magical), its magic fails when its HP is reduced to 0. At that point, the band’s glow extinguishes, the glyphs dull, and both companionship resonance and spiral authority become dormant.

  • AC Equivalent: 16 (small, moving target, difficult to strike precisely in combat)
  • Damage Threshold: It ignores any single hit dealing less than 5 points of damage (to represent reinforced enchantment and hardened materials).
  • Critical Weakness: Effects that shatter contracts, silence divine echoes, or sunder Kabbalistic inscriptions may bypass threshold at GM discretion.

Repair Methods

  1. Mundane Repair (Minor Damage, 1–10 HP lost)
    • Materials: treated leather, bronze solder, silk thread.
    • Skill: basic smithing or leatherworking.
    • Time: 2–4 hours.
    • Restores: up to 10 HP of structure, but not the magic.
  2. Arcane or Ritual Repair (Moderate Damage, 11–20 HP lost)
    • Materials: powdered quartz, ritual ink, incense of binding.
    • Skill: Enchanting or Arcana proficiency.
    • Time: 6–8 hours, with chanting of numerical mantras.
    • Restores: both structure and resonance glyphs (up to 20 HP).
  3. Full Restoration (Severe Damage, 21–30 HP lost or at 0 HP)
    • Requires:
      • Re-etching the spiral glyphs with a Glyph-Inscriber’s Needle.
      • Binding starlight essence into the rune stone under a full moon.
      • A spoken vow of companionship (Contract side) and intentional silence (Kabbalah side).
    • Skill: Master-level relic-crafting or equivalent divine ritual.
    • Time: 3 full days of uninterrupted work.
    • Result: The item regains its full 30 HP and restores all magical passives and actives.

If improperly repaired, the band risks misalignment—a flaw where its Spiral Voice effects turn misleading (granting false hierarchical cues) or its Companion’s Call summons a hostile echo.

how Contract 944 of the Ascendant Steps might circulate across the markets of Saṃsāra, where philosophy, companionship, and numerology overlap.

1. The House of Twin Echoes (Temple-Bazaar of Dhiiron’s Reach)

  • Shop Type: A semi-public annex of a grand temple where clerics of Ascendancy and contract-scribes exchange relics bound to oaths.
  • How Sold: Only after the buyer presents both a vow of intent and a recollection of a past bond (friend, comrade, or mentor). The item is wrapped in black parchment with the buyer’s name numerically inscribed.
  • Cost: 600 gp, or 450 gp + written record of a personal vow donated to the temple archive.
  • Cultural Note: Ownership is logged publicly in temple ledgers; secrecy is impossible here.

2. The Constellation Exchange (Sky-Caravan Markets of the Aevan Chain)

  • Shop Type: Floating pontoons trading in star-runes, dream-stones, and binding contracts, staffed by astrologer-scribes.
  • How Sold: Avatars recite their guiding purpose under the night sky; if the band glows, it “accepts” the bond and may be purchased. If it remains inert, the traders refuse.
  • Cost: 550 gp, or 400 gp plus a constellation map drawn by the buyer.
  • Cultural Note: Traders keep a copy of every purchased star-map in their archives, believing these maps predict future unions and conflicts.

3. The Silent Ledger (Underground Vaults of Kal-Narok)

  • Shop Type: Shadow-market specializing in heretical contracts, fractured relics, and stolen pendants.
  • How Sold: Whispered negotiation through a funnel of iron. No oaths required—coin or secrets suffice. Most bands sold here are cracked or faintly misaligned.
  • Cost: 300–350 gp flat, or 200 gp + a spoken secret.
  • Cultural Note: Buyers often mark the leather band with their own blood to overwrite prior ownership. This carries risk of spiritual backlash.

4. The Collegium Archive Bureau (Bureaucratic Halls of Fauresmith)

  • Shop Type: Government-sanctioned reliquary bureau, distributing relics for state-licensed leaders, scholars, and envoys.
  • How Sold: Requires application papers, proof of leadership role, or demonstration of philosophy. Once approved, the band is sealed in a bronze case and signed into the buyer’s official record.
  • Cost: 700 gp, or 500 gp for registered officials.
  • Cultural Note: These bands are inscribed with serial numbers; misuse can be traced.

5. The Stepwell of Ten Echoes (Hermitage Market in the Mykran Range)

  • Shop Type: A pilgrimage site rather than a shop—bands are uncovered from spiral-carved walls by those who complete a ritual descent.
  • How Sold: Not sold at all. Instead, seekers walk the entire stair, reciting their companion’s name or vow of silence without pause. Those who succeed find a band loosened from the stone and offered freely.
  • Cost: No coin. The price is endurance, silence, and sincerity.
  • Cultural Note: Such bands are considered “purest,” commanding higher resale value if moved back into urban markets.

How Contract 944 of the Ascendant Steps may be used across varied environments, both defensively and offensively, when roleplayed in Saṃsāra.

Urban Environments (Temples, Councils, Guildhalls, Courtrooms)

Defense:

  • The wearer perceives hidden motives in speech, allowing them to deflect manipulation or identify threats before they escalate.
  • By strengthening bonds with companions, the wearer projects unity that deters rivals from isolating them socially or politically.
  • Spiraled Resonance can turn a hostile interrogation into a moment of collective doubt, breaking the momentum of accusers.

Offense:

  • The pendant-band lets the user subtly realign the hierarchy of a room, seizing authority in negotiations or council disputes.
  • Echoed Ally may be used symbolically in courts or guild conflicts—summoning a spirit companion whose presence makes opponents hesitate or falter in their arguments.
  • Spiral Insight allows the wearer to uncover ambitions or secrets in rivals, which can then be leveraged for political gain.

Wilderness and Frontier (Pilgrimage Roads, Forests, Mountains, Ruins)

Defense:

  • The guiding band aspect strengthens companionship bonds, preventing morale collapse during long travels or in treacherous terrain.
  • Summoned allies can provide cover against ambushes, keeping the wearer alive until aid arrives.
  • Spiral perception aids in discerning leadership among bandits or tribes, allowing negotiation instead of outright combat.

Offense:

  • Companions’ Call manifests a temporary warrior-spirit to turn the tide of a skirmish in remote places where aid is scarce.
  • Step of Unity can amplify rallying cries, inspiring allies in camp or during sudden strikes.
  • Against wild spirits or ruin-guardians, the wearer can assert symbolic superiority, bending their will or gaining a tactical pause.

Warfare and Siege (Command Tents, Battlegrounds, Military Assemblies)

Defense:

  • In chaotic battlefields, the band steadies allies by binding them emotionally, preventing collapse under fear or confusion.
  • Companion’s Call may summon a shield-bearing ally at the wearer’s weakest point, holding enemy lines at bay for vital seconds.
  • Silent Concordance subtly resists fear effects or domination attempts from enemy warlords or spellcasters.

Offense:

  • Spiraled Resonance amplifies the wearer’s command voice, cutting through battlefield noise and ensuring troops act with clarity.
  • Echo Ascendant allows replay of past rallying speeches, giving mechanical boosts to morale and effectiveness of strategies.
  • Used offensively, the summoned echo can charge enemy lines, creating space or distraction for allied maneuver.

Sacred or Esoteric Sites (Ley-Nexus Shrines, Forgotten Temples, Ritual Chambers)

Defense:

  • The item stabilizes emotional and symbolic alignment in high-magic zones, warding off corruption or madness from chaotic energy.
  • Spiral perception helps determine proper posture or action in ritual spaces, avoiding accidental desecration or divine wrath.
  • Bond of Unity strengthens resistance against curses that prey upon isolation or despair.

Offense:

  • Invoking Step of Unity or Spiral Insight against bound guardians or ancient oaths can unravel ritual wards or compel spectral servants.
  • Companion’s Call manifests allies that can fight incorporeal or ritual-locked beings, giving offensive weight in places normal steel fails.
  • With Name of the Spiral, the wearer may force divine or spiritual beings to reveal their true purpose, weaponizing revelation.

Shadow Courts and Underworlds (Criminal Networks, Heretical Sects, Secret Orders)

Defense:

  • The band projects a protective aura of companionship, discouraging betrayal from within gangs or cult cells.
  • Silent Concordance allows resistance to manipulation by charismatic crime lords or heretical prophets.
  • Observers often hesitate to strike when a companion spirit manifests beside the wearer.

Offense:

  • Spiral Voice functions offensively in whispered negotiations—forcing rivals to confess hidden cravings that can be exploited for leverage.
  • Companion’s Call can tilt street skirmishes or back-alley ambushes in the wearer’s favor, as a temporary bodyguard materializes.
  • Step of Unity ensures the user’s words dominate in sect debates, splitting rival factions and turning underlings against leaders.

Perception of Activation:

User’s Perspective (Wearing Contract 944 of the Ascendant Steps)

  • Sight: The spiral pendant glows with bronze and silver light, and the midnight rune stone blooms with starfields, each constellation shifting to match the wearer’s intent. Threads of light connect the pendant and stone, outlining faint human silhouettes—companions echoing at the edge of vision.
  • Sound: A layered chorus of whispers—some in the user’s own voice, others in voices of companions past—resonates beneath all external noise. At moments of decision, a single voice rises clear, offering guidance.
  • Touch: The leather band pulses against the skin like a heartbeat, syncing with the rhythm of the wearer’s breath. The spiral tug feels directional, as if aligning posture and thought toward unseen paths.
  • Smell: Faint incense of cedar, parchment, and cool night air wafts from the band. At times of strong intent, it sharpens into the scent of ozone before rain.
  • Taste: A subtle metallic tang on the tongue, like starlight dissolved in water. When focus deepens, this shifts to sweetness, reminiscent of wine shared among friends.
  • Extra-Sensory:
    • Companion’s Echo: A psychic warmth of unseen allies nearby, bolstering courage.
    • Hierarchical Threading: Perception of unseen “lines of influence” between people in sight, showing who leads, who follows, and who resists.
    • Temporal Drift: Fleeting visions of potential futures if one path is chosen over another.
  • Positives: Heightened clarity, courage, and unity; intuitive sense of companionship and direction; social and tactical leverage.
  • Negatives: Risk of distraction from voices overlapping; paranoia if overwhelmed by too many hierarchies; emotional longing for companions no longer present.

Observer’s Perspective (Watching the Activation)

  • Sight: The wristband glows softly; star-threads arc outward in faint constellations before fading. The spiral pendant seems to “breathe,” always turning slightly toward the speaker. The wearer’s form looks faintly haloed, as if outlined by geometric patterns.
  • Sound: Most hear nothing unusual, though sensitive listeners may catch faint harmonics or the sense that the wearer’s words carry unusual weight.
  • Touch (if handled): The item feels heavier and warmer to others than it should, as though it resists being separated from its true bearer.
  • Extra-Sensory:
    • Observers may feel a subconscious pull to treat the wearer as an authority figure.
    • Those with guilt or deception may feel discomfort or unease, as if their hidden truths are exposed.
  • Positives: Inspires awe and confidence in allies; disrupts the composure of foes.
  • Negatives: Unnerves liars and manipulators; rivals may perceive it as a challenge to their authority.

Recipe of the Ascendant Constellation Spiral
The forging of Contract 944 of the Ascendant Steps

Items Merged

Additional Materials Needed

  • Thread of Silent Unity: A skein of silk spun by silent-worms, infused with a memory of shared laughter.
  • Starlit Resin: Transparent resin mixed with powdered moonstone, hardened under open starlight for three consecutive nights.
  • Ash of the Hierophant: A pinch of sanctified ash from a burned scroll of authority or divine ascent.
  • Breath of Companionship: A crystal vial containing the last exhale of two allies who swore to protect each other.
  • Ink of Eternal Pathways: A vial of enchanted ink mixed from silver dust, elderberry, and stormwater, to etch new glyphs.

Tools Required

  • Celestial Carver: For etching constellation runes into the midnight stone.
  • Glyph-Inscriber’s Needle: For inscribing shifting Hebrew letters onto the spiral pendant.
  • Unity Brazier: A ritual brazier burning herbs of cedar, sage, and lavender to stabilize bonds.
  • Resonance Mallet: A silver-headed hammer that rings with harmonics when striking metal or stone.
  • Binding Tongs of Concord: Forged to merge disparate relics without breaking their essences.

Skill Requirements

  • Arcane Inscription (Advanced): To align glyphs of spiral ascension with stellar constellations.
  • Contract Weaving (Intermediate): To bind companionship pacts into physical form.
  • Numerology & Kabbalistic Lore (Trained): To balance hierarchies within the spiral’s incomplete gap.
  • Memory Alchemy (Basic): To safely distill emotional essence into materials without rupture.
  • Meditative Focus: Artisan must be able to enter a calm state of resonance with both items simultaneously.

Crafting Steps

  1. Purification: Place both original items in the Unity Brazier for a full night, allowing their old magics to soften and release their boundaries. Ash of the Hierophant is sprinkled over them to sanctify the merging.
  2. Alignment of Constellations: With the Celestial Carver, re-etch the constellation on the Guiding Band’s rune stone, this time leaving threads incomplete. The gaps will later connect to the spiral glyphs.
  3. Spiral Engraving: Using the Glyph-Inscriber’s Needle and Ink of Eternal Pathways, inscribe new numerological glyphs along the bronze spiral, designed to interlock with the rune stone’s constellations. Each glyph must be spoken aloud in a low chant of intent.
  4. Bond of Companionship: Break the vial of Breath of Companionship over both items. The vapor must settle naturally; do not disturb. This binds the essence of unity into the merged form.
  5. Fusion: Using the Binding Tongs of Concord, set the spiral pendant into the leather band so the rune stone sits at its center. Tap three times with the Resonance Mallet until both glow with synchronous light.
  6. Starlit Sealing: Coat the merged relic in Starlit Resin, then place it beneath an open sky until dawn. During this time, the Thread of Silent Unity must be woven around it, binding the spiral and band as one whole.
  7. Final Incantation: At sunrise, speak the words of the Spiral Voice while recalling a memory of companionship. The merged band will hum, glow, and briefly project a constellation of living light before stabilizing.

When complete, the new artifact—Contract 944 of the Ascendant Steps—emerges as a single unified relic, its light pulsing in rhythm with both companionship and ascension.

Steps That Spiral Toward Companions
(Fragments recovered from reed-scrolls and clay shards, said to be transcribed from an elder tongue before the rivers remembered their names. The following text bears marks of mistranslation, lost sense, and echoes of voices not whole.)

In the long-before, when the earth was still counting itself and the sky had not yet decided how many lamps to hang, there were the Wanderers of Alone. They walked the roads that had no stones and crossed waters that had no shores. Each bore a silence so heavy that even the stars bent away.

Among them was one known not as king, not as priest, but as Listener-of-Many-Voices. His chest was hollow with solitude, yet in his dream he saw a spiral not ending, and in his hand he felt a band not breaking.

He went seeking. For forty nights he followed the whisper of constellations that rearranged with every breath, until he came to the Hill of Unfinished Steps. There, the wind spoke in numbers, and the dust sang with faces unseen. He pressed his hand into the soil, and the soil pressed back with the memory of companions lost.

Upon that hill he found two relics:
One, a leather band whose stone glowed with paths unwalked, binding the heart to those not present.
Two, a pendant spiral of bronze and bone-silver, where numbers turned like rivers, showing which way the voice must rise.

The Listener did not wear them apart. He bound them together, and when he did, the heavens bent down. Stars folded into spirals, and the silence of solitude cracked into song.

The tale tells: with this binding, the Listener was no longer alone. Out of air came echoes—companions wrought from memory, from desire, from truth hidden in the heart. They fought beside him when he was broken. They wept when he triumphed. And in every assembly, his voice carried not only his words but the words of those unseen, so that kings mistook him for a prophet, and prophets mistook him for a throne.

Yet the tale turns darker: one night, the Listener asked the Spiral-Band a question of selfishness. “Will I rise above all others, to sit at the throne that waits?”

The relic answered not in sound but in fracture. Companions turned to smoke, voices to ash. His band grew cold, his spiral incomplete once more. He walked away hollow, and where he went, no record speaks.

But the Spiral-Band, now called Contract 944 of the Ascendant Steps, was not lost. It fell into the keeping of wandering sages, who tell that only those who seek not power for its own weight, but companionship for its own song, may awaken its constellations again.

Moral of the Story: One who walks alone may find power, but one who walks with others finds the path that endures.

Narrative Note:
The Guiding Spiral is considered a dangerous relic in both Sigmarite and heretical circles, as it bridges companionship and forbidden numerological truths.
