Tale of the Sky-Spears and the Star-Metal

From fragments, pieced together, a tale told in whispers, comes this… the legend of the Sky-Spears.  A story scratched on cracked tablets, sung by voices hoarse with age, a story from a time before time, when the very air tasted of magic, not yet faded.

In that dawn-time, when the world was new-minted and the stars hung low, beings of light descended.  They came not on wings, but on pillars of starlight, their forms shimmering, their voices like the chime of distant bells. They walked amongst the First People, who were then but children, knowing little of the world beyond their reach.

These Star-Beings, as they were called by some (though their true name is lost, swallowed by the ages), pitied the First People’s frailty. They saw how the First People struggled against the beasts of the wild, how their bodies tired, how their spirits flagged. So, they shared a secret, a gift from the heavens above.

They spoke of a metal, fallen from the stars themselves, a metal they called Ni-Bu-Sum – the word itself tasting like starlight on the tongue. This Ni-Bu-Sum, they said, held the echo of the heavens, the strength of the stars. And they taught the First People a way to use it.

The Star-Beings showed how to gather the Ni-Bu-Sum which fell in glittering specks upon the highest peaks. They demonstrated how to craft sharp points and coat the food-sticks with the metal. The First People hunted the plump sea-creatures and gathered the earth-fruits, skewering them on the metal-touched sticks. Then with fire from the mountains, they cooked the food, the heat binding the Ni-Bu-Sum’s power to the flesh and fruit.

When they ate, oh, when they ate! A strength surged through them, a swiftness they had never known. They could run like the wind, leap like the mountain cats, their bodies echoing the celestial energy now within them. The Star-Beings rejoiced, seeing their gift well-used.

But time, as it always does, brought change. The Star-Beings, their task complete, returned to their home amongst the constellations. The First People, now strong, grew proud. They hoarded the Ni-Bu-Sum, fought amongst themselves for the star-touched food. They forgot the lessons of the Star-Beings, the sharing, the humility.

And so, the Ni-Bu-Sum began to fade. Its celestial glow dimmed, its power waned. The skewers became mere tools, the food just sustenance. The memory of the Star-Beings became a legend, whispered, distorted, doubted.

Moral: Even gifts from the heavens can be tarnished by the greed of mortals. True strength lies not just in power, but in the wisdom to use it humbly and share it freely, for even star metal will fade when grasped by a selfish hand.
