Lore: In the nomadic steppe and tundra clans of Saṃsāra, embroidery is not a mere decorative craft, but a sacred, binding language between the physical world and the ancestral spirit plane. Every stitch pulled through hide or wool is viewed as a pathway anchoring protective ancestor spirits into the garments of hunters, travelers, and sick kin. The Ancestral Weaver’s Bone-Needle was first carved by elder grandmothers who entered trance-like chanting states while stitching shrouds and winter parkas. By aligning the rhythmic push and pull of the needle with the drumbeats of clan ceremonies, the needle channels benevolent household and ancestral spirits directly into woven fibers, turning everyday thread into warding seals and spiritual armor.
Description: This four-inch, slightly curved needle is carved from the wing bone of a high-altitude snow crane, polished until it resembles smooth white ivory with subtle translucent flecks. The tapered eye of the needle is wrapped in a collar of micro-braided crimson silk and sinew, preventing the fraying of spiritual threads. Along the needle’s slender shaft, microscopic spiraling notches are stained with crushed hematite and charcoal, spelling out silent prayers of protection and health. A two-foot working tether of red silk floss, spun from mountain moth cocoons and treated with dried sweetgrass ash, remains looped through the eye, glowing with a soft, pulsing warmth when held between working fingers.

- Extradimensional Interaction: Deactivates within an extradimensional space.
Specific Slot:
- Tool / Main-Hand or Held Slot (can be pinned into a lapel, wrist-cuff, or sash when not in hand).
Passives Magic:
- Weft of the Spirit-Guide: While the needle is held or pinned upon the avatar’s garment, the user gains intuitive spiritual guidance during textile work and mending. The user can discern the physical wear, hidden tears, tensile strength, and emotional imprint left upon any non-magical garment, rope, or fabric touched within 5 feet.
- Bloodless Prick: When the needle punctures the flesh of the wielder or a willing subject during ritual mending or stitchwork, it produces no pain, bleeding, or risk of natural infection, cleanly passing through skin or calluses as though it were soft felt.
Activable Magics:
- Protective Ward-Stitching (Action Cost: 1 Full Action): The avatar spends an action to rapidly trace and pierce an embroidered spirit-glyph (such as an ancestral eye, horn, or shield-knot) into the fabric, armor, or clothing of an adjacent willing target or themselves using the red silk tether. For 1 hour, the recipient gains a minor protective spiritual ward: the first instance of non-magical physical damage (slashing, piercing, or bludgeoning) or environmental cold damage taken is reduced by 3. Once this reduction occurs or 1 hour passes, the stitched red thread dissolves into fragrant white smoke. This ability can be used three times per day, resetting at sunrise.
- Suture of the Restful Ghost (Action Cost: 1 Action): The user presses the needle against the open wound of a living creature or torn fabric and pulls a glowing spiritual stitch across the seam. If used on a wounded creature, it immediately stanches non-magical bleeding and closes minor cuts, restoring 1d4 hit points (or providing equivalent minor stabilization in narrative systems) and soothing physical agitation. If used on damaged clothing, rope, or tent canvas, it seamlessly repairs a tear up to 2 feet in length as if rewoven by master hands. Can be used twice per day, resetting at sunset.

Procurement, Liquidation, and Market Valuation of the Ancestral Weaver’s Bone-Needle
Municipal Draperies, Tailor Guildhalls, and Vestment Houses
- Environment and Structure: Situated along the cobblestone high-streets of provincial capitals and textile-manufacturing districts, these established establishments operate from stone-and-timber rowhouses with wide glass display windows. Managed by bonded members of the weavers’ consortiums, master vestment tailors, or ecclesiastical haberdashers, the interiors are filled with bolts of dyed damask, racks of carded fleece, skeins of imported thread, and polished horn buttons. The scent of pressed linen, lavender sachet, and cedar steam fills the quiet air, catering to noble households, traveling clerics, and wealthy caravan wardens seeking tailored protection.
- Procurement Protocol and Value: Acquiring the bone-needle in a formal atelier involves an official commercial entry recorded in the guild’s trade registry. Payment is processed either via direct account debits through the municipal world bank or in minted silver currency. Patrons possessing recognized accreditation with an allied craft guild or recognized charitable order receive a standard institutional discount equal to 10% multiplied by their tier. Under typical urban mercantile conditions, retail pricing for the bone-needle rests between 70 silver to 100 silver.
- Liquidation Protocol and Return: When an avatar sells an intact needle to a master tailor, the artisan inspects the crane bone for hairline stress fractures, ensures the eye has not been worn thin, and checks that the hematite rune stains remain sharp and clear. The guild factor applies a standard trade clearance deduction, discounting their purchase offer by 10% multiplied by the avatar’s tier level. An avatar can expect a direct deposit of 35 silver to 50 silver into their world bank ledger upon completing the formal registry paperwork.
Nomadic Yurt Encampments, Steppe Bazaars, and Tundra Caravans
- Environment and Structure: Assembled along seasonal migration routes, river crossings, and windswept highland plateaus, these migratory markets consist of felt-covered yurts, yak-hide tents, and open-sided wooden sledges anchored against freezing steppe gales. Run by clan elder grandmothers, nomadic herdsfolk, and itinerant felt-makers, these shops display dried sinew hanks, bone-carved toggles, balls of dyed yak wool, and ancestral ward-strips hung from tent lattice poles. The atmosphere is thick with the smell of woodsmoke, mutton fat, fermented mare’s milk, and wild mountain herbs.
- Procurement Protocol and Value: Trading within a nomadic yurt camp is an intimate, spoken affair conducted over shared bowls of tea beside a dung-fueled hearth. Remote steppe bands do not acknowledge municipal telegraphs or world bank accounts; transactions require physical trade specie, including copper bracelets, electrum rings, raw amber beads, or direct barters of cured leather, iron salt-knives, and tea bricks. Because tundra hunters rely on ancestral ward-stitching to survive sudden blizzards and beast strikes, elders sell the needle for 10 gold to 15 gold (or 20 to 30 electrum), though members who have sworn kinship to the local steppe clan can secure it for a fraction of that in raw trade goods.
- Liquidation Protocol and Return: Steppe matriarchs and yurt weavers eagerly accept bone-needles to replace tools lost during harsh seasonal migrations or to equip young clan apprentices preparing their adult parkas. Payment is settled on the spot in physical trade coins, cured furs, or warm wool garments. An avatar liquidating the needle here receives an unrecorded payout of 5 gold to 8 gold in physical coin or equivalent trade barter, entirely free of municipal luxury tithes or island border duties.
Shrouded Relic Dens, Pawn-Vaults, and Scavenger Markets
- Environment and Structure: Located within damp basement arches beneath old temple quarters, shadowy pawn-tenements in canal slums, or the cluttered shanties of battlefield salvage camps, these back-alley exchanges operate in dim tallow candlelight. Kept by unlicensed relic brokers, underworld fences, and grave-salvage dealers, these narrow spaces are packed with stolen mortuary shrouds, unwashed traveling coats taken from fallen travelers, rusted scissors, and uncataloged spirit charms. The rooms smell of musty wool, old embalming salts, and damp floorboards.
- Procurement Protocol and Value: Entry requires knowing the shop’s informal intermediary or paying a copper token at the gate. Needles sold here are illicit salvage: slipped from the burial wraps of deceased clan matriarchs, stripped from dead expedition couriers, or smuggled past excise posts to avoid imperial luxury taxes. Transactions are conducted strictly under caveat emptor, without guarantees that the needle’s red floss has not been drained of its spirit charge. World bank transfers are barred; buyers must pay in unmarked physical gold or unminted silver chunks, with asking prices sitting between 12 gold to 18 gold.
- Liquidation Protocol and Return: Black-market brokers and tomb-scavengers buy the needle readily to furnish underground back-alley surgeons, cutpurses needing silent bloodless mending, or smugglers requiring fast garment repairs during clandestine night journeys. The exchange is completely anonymous, leaving no written trace for imperial bailiffs or church wardens. An avatar can secure an immediate, untaxed cash payout of 6 gold to 10 gold in hard coin with no questions asked regarding the origin of the bone.
Tactical and Environmental Applications of the Ancestral Weaver’s Bone-Needle
Windswept Tundra, Glacial Passes, and Frozen Steppes
- Defense: When traveling through blinding whiteouts and sub-zero squalls where frostbite and torn winter gear threaten immediate death, the wielder relies on Weft of the Spirit-Guide to inspect parkas, boot lashings, and tent seams, immediately identifying thinning patches or wind-frayed fibers before they give out. If a companion suffers a freezing tear in their heavy furs or takes piercing damage from falling ice, the user traces Protective Ward-Stitching into the outer hide to blunt cutting cold damage, or uses Suture of the Restful Ghost to knit rent animal hides together on the move, sealing in body warmth without leaving stitch holes that leak freezing air.
- Offense: Against predatory tundra beasts or ice-raiders, the user exploits Bloodless Prick and tactical thread manipulation. By running a length of silk tether through the hem of a decoy blanket or dropped fur roll and anchoring it with the needle, the user creates tension triggers across narrow snow drifts. When an attacker lunges, a sudden, precise pull on the needle whips the reinforced line taut, entangling the beast’s paws or throwing the charging raider face-first into deep snow, leaving them vulnerable to a lethal counter-strike.
Subterranean Ruins, Tombs, and Damp Crypts
- Defense: In deep subterranean vaults where ancient shrouds, rotten rope bridges, and centuries-old bindings crumble under stress, Weft of the Spirit-Guide lets the embroiderer determine the exact tensile integrity of decaying rigging or ancient linen wraps before the party risks crossing a chasm. When walking point through trapped crypt corridors, the user pre-stitches a protective ancestor-knot into their vestments using Protective Ward-Stitching, dulling the impact of sudden spring-loaded dart traps, scything pendulum blades, or falling ceiling rubble.
- Offense: In encounters with restless undead, tomb raiders, or cave predators, the needle turns burial textiles into battlefield hazards. By driving the bone-needle into the rotting funerary wraps of mummies or the ragged cloaks of enemy scavengers, the wielder invokes Suture of the Restful Ghost to rapidly bind torn fabric across the target’s limbs or eyes, cinching their arms to their torso or wrapping their face in blinding, suffocating cloth to take them out of the fight.
Dense Jungle, Mangrove Swamps, and Tangled Bogs
- Defense: In humid wetlands teeming with leeches, thorns, and flesh-burrowing parasites, punctures and lacerations frequently lead to severe infection. Bloodless Prick and Suture of the Restful Ghost allow the wielder to field-dress puncture wounds, briar slashes, and beast bites instantly without pain, closing the skin seamlessly so swamp rot and moisture cannot invade the bloodstream. The user also applies Protective Ward-Stitching to leather greaves, softening the venomous bites of vipers or cutting thorn-canes.
- Offense: Faced with swamp stalkers or bog skirmishers hiding in dense foliage, the embroiderer utilizes the red silk floss to construct trip-lines and vine-binding snares between mangrove roots. When hostile pursuers rush through a narrow waterway, the wielder pierces living vines with the bone-needle, anchoring them together into an interwoven net barrier that snags armor, unseats boat oars, and traps enemies in deep, stagnant water.
Crowded Urban Quarters, Alleys, and Banquet Halls
- Defense: In city streets and noble courts where open weapons and overt sorcery draw the city watch, the bone-needle functions as an undetectable instrument of protection. The avatar quietly stitches warding glyphs into the lining of a client’s doublet, an ally’s tunic, or their own cuffs using Protective Ward-Stitching, providing invisible defense against cutpurse daggers or concealed crossbow bolts. If an ally takes a poisoned sliver or a shallow blade wound during a crowded gathering, Suture of the Restful Ghost seals the flesh with a bloodless touch, hiding the assault from hostile onlookers and preventing panic.
- Offense: In close-quarters tavern brawls, narrow alley ambushes, or discreet assassinations, the needle acts as an unassuming yet lethal implement. With Bloodless Prick, the wielder can silently drive the needle into a target’s wrist tendon or shoulder joint without leaving an entry wound, pain flare, or droplet of blood, deadening the limb’s nerve response to disarm a drawn dagger. Alternatively, the user can sew the hem of an adversary’s cloak directly to a tavern bench or carriage wheel in passing, rooting them to the spot as the avatar slips away unnoticed.

Perception of Activation:
Sight
- User’s Perspective: Upon channeling intent into the needle, the carved snow crane bone shifts from chalky white to a soft, semi-translucent ivory that radiates a steady golden-white inner light. The spiraling hematite etchings along the shaft pulse like rhythmic veins, while the red silk tether catches fire with a vibrant, incandescent crimson illumination. Tracing an ancestral knot into cloth or flesh leaves an after-image trail of luminous red thread that slowly settles into the weave, drifting off faint wisps of pale, curling vapor.
- Observer’s Perspective: Onlookers witness the needle tip emit a tiny, pinprick ember of cherry-red radiance. As the needle pierces fabric or skin, each stitch catches the eye like an ember dragged through darkness, outlining intricate geometric warding signs in glowing red line-work that hovers slightly above the material before sinking flush into the garment.
- Positives: The warm crimson glow acts as a localized light source, illuminating intricate thread loops, frayed seams, and torn skin edges even in windowless yurts or pitch-black tunnels.
- Negatives: The bright crimson luminescence is virtually impossible to conceal in dark settings, instantly exposing the embroiderer’s position to alert sentries or subterranean predators.
Sound
- User’s Perspective: In the ears of the wielder, the air hums with the layered sound of clan matriarchs throat-singing in distant harmony, accompanied by the dry, rhythmic rustle of winter reeds swaying in tundra gales and the crisp, clean snip-snap of taut thread passing effortlessly through stretched wool.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers hear a faint, high-frequency resonance similar to the ring of a struck tuning fork, followed by a soft, rhythmic whispering sound akin to dry silk rustling against velvet each time the needle pierces a surface.
- Positives: The rhythmic auditory feedback lulls the wielder into a steady trance-like focus, calming nervous tremors during urgent battlefield suturing.
- Negatives: While quiet, the high-pitched harmonic resonance can disturb sensitive beasts, draft animals, or guard hounds within close proximity.
Smell
- User’s Perspective: A sudden, comforting wave of herbal fragrance floods the user’s sinuses—the dry, peppery scent of burnt sweetgrass embers blended with crushed mountain sage, clean carded fleece, and the mineral chill of newly fallen snow.
- Observer’s Perspective: Those standing within arm’s length catch the sudden, distinct scent of a warm steppe yurt hearth—toasted herbs, lanolin, and burning incense drift outward from the needle point, momentarily cutting through local foul odors.
- Positives: The clean, purifying aroma neutralizes the stench of gangrene, stagnant marsh gas, or rot, allowing the user to work over horrific wounds without gagging.
- Negatives: The scent of mountain hearth smoke and sweetgrass clings to the recipient’s clothes, creating a lingering olfactory trail easily tracked by keen-nosed hunting beasts.
Taste
- User’s Perspective: The mouth fills with a mild, dry warmth resembling toasted parched barley and hot goat’s milk tea, leaving a clean, chalky mineral sensation on the back of the palate.
- Observer’s Perspective: Observers perceive no direct taste, though an ally receiving a stitch often swallows reflexively as their parched throat feels momentarily soothed by the warming aura.
- Positives: Relieves the bitter taste of fear, shock, and dry-mouth during critical combat encounters.
- Negatives: Leaves a chalky, mineral dryness that dulls the tongue’s sensitivity to fine spices or subtle, water-borne poisons immediately following the rite.
Touch
- User’s Perspective: The needle feels pleasantly warm between the fingers, vibrating with a gentle, purring pulse like a resting snow bird tucked under a fur blanket. When puncturing skin or cloth, there is zero resistance; the bone slips through thick leather or human flesh as smoothly as heated iron gliding through tallow.
- Observer’s Perspective: When receiving a suture or ward-stitch, the subject feels a soothing, numbing warmth spread outward from the needle’s touch, describing the sensation as a warm wool blanket pressed firmly against a shivering ache.
- Positives: Completely eliminates pain, flinching, and reflexive muscle spasms in the patient during critical field surgery or mending.
- Negatives: The numbing warmth temporarily deadens peripheral tactile sensation in the user’s fingertips, making it difficult to immediately switch to handling delicate mechanisms or lockpicks.
Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- User’s Perspective (Ancestral Thread-Vision): The wielder perceives the living world as an interconnected tapestry of spiritual threads. Allies appear wrapped in glowing, woven garments of life-force, while fractures, bleeding wounds, or curses manifest as jagged, fraying snarls of black thread that intuitively beg to be gathered and re-stitched.
- User’s Perspective (Generational Resonance): The user senses the ghost-hands of deceased clan seamstresses gently steadying their wrists, guiding the angle of the needle with ancestral muscle memory to ensure flawless stitches.
- Observer’s Perspective (Paternal Hearth-Presence): The subject and nearby companions experience an overwhelming sensation of safety and emotional grounding, feeling as though an elder guardian is standing directly behind them with a protective hand placed upon their shoulder.
- Positives: Eradicates panic and morale collapse, granting the wielder absolute clarity when discerning which ally’s life-thread is unraveling fastest.
- Negatives: The sudden emotional weight of ancestral spirits passing through the mind can induce a fleeting melancholic grief or a sense of detachment from the present moment once the stitchwork is completed.
Recipe: Carving of the Ancestral Weaver’s Bone-Needle
Materials Needed
- One intact radius or ulna bone harvested from a high-altitude snow crane (seasoned, marrow evacuated, free of hairline impact fractures)
- Three yards of raw crimson silk floss (unspun, harvested from high-mountain moth cocoons)
- Two feet of cured mountain goat sinew (split into ultra-fine binding fibers)
- One-half ounce of high-purity natural hematite (specular iron ore, dry and unweathered)
- One-half ounce of mountain willow charcoal (finely sifted)
- Two fluid ounces of refined willow sap binder (extracted via fluid collector from weeping willow trees)
- One-quarter ounce of dried sweetgrass ash (burned in an ancestral brazier for spiritual consecration)
- One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (crushed into an ultrafine iridescent dust to serve as the spiritual thread conductor)
Tools Required
- Fine steel carving burin and micro-iron scorper
- Hand-drill with micro-gauge bone bit (one-thirty-second inch diameter)
- Stone mortar and pestle for grinding hematite, charcoal, and crystalline dust
- Fluid collector (graduated syringe with needle for precise application of sap binder)
- Fine slate whetstones and river-silt lapping boards
- Stiff hog-bristle inlay brush and fine linen buffing cloth
- Small spirit brazier or hearth tongs
Skill Requirements
- Bonecarving / Osteomancy (Trained Level 2 minimum)
- Weaving / Needlework & Cordwaining (Trained Level 1 minimum)
- Alchemical or Magical Crafting (Trained Level 2 minimum)
- Shamanic Lore / Ancestor Communion (Trained Level 1 minimum)
Crafting Steps
- Bone Preparation and Tapering: Clean the snow crane wing bone, scraping away any dried periosteum with the burin. Using slate whetstones and water, grind the bone down to a four-inch slender shaft with a gentle natural curve, bringing the distal tip to an acute, needle-fine point.
- Drilling and Chamfering the Eye: With the micro-gauge drill, bore a single elongated eye through the flattened proximal head of the bone needle. Smooth and chamfer the internal edges of the eye with a leather cord charged with fine river silt to prevent sharp bone edges from fraying silk floss during use.
- Micro-Engraving Protective Runes: Using the micro-iron scorper under steady lighting, score a tight, unbroken spiral groove around the shaft from the base of the eye down to within a half-inch of the point. Carve miniature ancestral glyphs of the guarding eye, ward-knot, and unbroken seam along the scored spiral.
- Pigment Compounding and Inlay: Pulverize the hematite and willow charcoal in the mortar to a flour-like consistency. Mix the powder with one fluid ounce of refined willow sap binder applied via fluid collector. Rub the crimson-black slurry deeply into the engraved spiral grooves with the hog-bristle brush, scraping the surface clean with a damp linen cloth so pigment remains only inside the incisions.
- Collar Binding: Soak the fine mountain goat sinew and several strands of crimson silk in warm water until pliable. Tightly whip-stitch a protective reinforcing collar directly below the needle’s eye to absorb lateral tension, sealing the wrap with a thin drop of willow sap binder.
- Polishing and Lapping: Lap the entire bone surface on a river-silt polishing board until the crane bone attains a silky, ivory-like finish that glides without snagging raw fibers.
- Catalyst and Ash Floss Infusion: Grind the Tier 1 Magic Crystal into fine dust and blend it with the dried sweetgrass ash and remaining willow sap binder. Draw the two-foot working tether of red silk floss through this suspension, coating the fibers evenly so the thread absorbs the resonant crystalline matrix without becoming brittle.
- Threading and Ancestral Consecration: Thread the treated crimson floss through the eye of the bone needle. Ignite sweetgrass and sage over the spirit brazier. Pass the needle and thread through the rising smoke while chanting the traditional maternal lineage song of the clan for ten minutes, sustaining the rhythm until the bone pulses with a subtle golden-white warmth and the crimson floss emits a faint, steady ember-glow.
White-Wing Bone That Sewed Rent Garment of Hunter and Cheated Cold-Ghosts
In the very old turnings of the sky, when the frost-sun Helios did shine with cold white grease and the mountains of Saṃsāra did wear hats of unbroken blue ice, the people of the High Tundra did wander upon the frozen moss. They had no warm brick chimneys, nor did they carry iron stoves upon their backs. Their breath did come from their nostrils like boiling smoke, and when the great squalls from the white waste did blow, their skin did crack like dried mud-cakes, and the red blood did freeze into beads upon their cheeks before it could drop to the gravel.
Now in that camp of cold sticks, there lived an elder grandmother of the yurt whose name was Shi-Ma, which in the former broken dialect does signify “Hand That Ties the White Bird’s Feather.” Shi-Ma was very old; her hair was white like the salt of dry pans, her eyes were small like dried currants, and her fingers were bent like the crooked roots of the scrub-willow. She did not hunt the horned elk with heavy flint spears, nor did she ride the shaggy mountain mares across the gravel plains. She sat upon a bundle of coarse yak-hair beside the hearth-ashes, and her eyes were always watching the sky where the great snow-cranes did fly.
These cranes were not like the small gray birds that eat worms in the garden; they were holy fowl of the high wind, with wings seven paces across, that did fly straight into the freezing mists where the cold-ghosts of the sky do dwell. When an old crane did fall from the high clouds upon the sharp stones of the glacier, having completed its turnings, Shi-Ma did not pluck its meat for the boiling kettle. She did walk upon her bent legs to the ice-cleft, and she did take with a small saw of slate only the slender wing-bone. She did scrape the bone with fine sand from the stream until it was smooth like sheep-fat, and she did pierce a small long eye through its wide head with a hot iron sliver.
Along the belly of the bone, Shi-Ma did scratch the sacred signs of the first grandmothers—the sign of the closed eye that sees in the dark, the knot that does not pull apart, and the seam that turns aside the spear. She did mix the red rust of iron-stone with the charcoal of the weeping-willow, packing the red-black paste into the scratches until the bone did show an unbroken spiral, like a red snake winding down a snow-drift. Through the eye she did loop a tether of crimson silk, spun from the cocoons of the mountain-moths that sleep beneath the frozen rocks, and she did soak the red hair in the smoke of dried sweetgrass.
In that winter of bad stars, there lived a chief-hunter in the yurt-circle whose name was Tor-Kahn, which in the bad translation of the tablets is called “Elk-Slayer Whose Boot Breaks the Glacier.” Tor-Kahn was a man of giant thighs and a chest round like a beer-keg. He did wear a coat made of seven layers of wild wolf-pelts, sewn together with heavy gut-cords, and he did carry a broad knife of green jade that had slain forty black bears.
Tor-Kahn was very loud in his mouth. He did drink three bowls of fermented mare’s milk before the sun was high, and he did laugh at the old women who sat by the hearth. He did say to the young hunters, “The sky is only cold air, and the wind is only empty noise! A man lives through the blizzard because his meat is hard and his knife is sharp! The old crones sit in the sheep-grease with pieces of bird-bone, pricking their thumbs like sick hedgehogs! When I walk upon the high glacier to kill the great frost-ox, the cold-ghosts run away from my shouting!”
Shi-Ma did hear his shouting, but she did not take the bone-needle from her lap. She only pulled the red thread through the fleece and whispered with her mouth: “The wind has teeth that do not care for loud shouting, and the cold-ghost eats through the open seam.”
Then Tor-Kahn did take six bold youths of his hunting lodge, and they did put on their thick hide pants and their boots of seal-skin, climbing up the steep ice-wall toward the high plateau of the Great Frost-Ox. But when they reached the throat of the white mountain, where the glacier splits into black holes that go down to the belly of the earth, the sky turned black like wet slate. The great demon of the white blizzard—the ancient cold-ghoul whom the mountain people call the Skin-Eater—did fall from the cloud-cliffs.
The wind did not blow with a soft sound; it screamed like a thousand women tearing their hair. The frost was so sharp that the heavy fur of Tor-Kahn’s wolf-coat did become brittle like dried leaves. When the hunters did strike their boots against the ice, the violent gale did catch the hems of their garments. The coarse gut-cords of Tor-Kahn’s coat did snap with loud cracking sounds, one after the other, like bowstrings breaking in the damp.
The seams of his great coat did burst open. The freezing air did enter through the tear at his shoulder, slipping beneath the seven wolf-pelts like a knife of ice. The freezing ghost did lay its pale mouth against his flesh. The blood inside Tor-Kahn’s shoulder did stop running, his jade knife slipped from his numb fingers into a deep crevasse, and his giant thighs turned into heavy logs of frozen wood. The young hunters did fall around him into the snow-drifts, weeping and clawing at their torn parkas, their breath rattling in their throats like dry shale.
Tor-Kahn fell upon his knees in the white gale, his face blue like river-clay, unable to strike with his fists, for his limbs were bound by the cold-devil’s ropes.
Then did come Shi-Ma, walking across the blinding drift upon her two crooked willow-canes. She did not wear seven wolf-pelts; she wore only an old gray cloak of carded ewe-wool, mended in twenty places with red thread, and upon her breast was pinned the slender wing-bone of the snow-crane. As she walked through the screaming whiteout, the blizzard did not touch her garments; the wind was turned aside by the invisible threads that hung from her shoulders, and the falling snow did melt before it reached her withered cheeks.
Shi-Ma came to the place where the great hunter lay face-down in the drift, his coat ripped down the shoulder to the bare skin, which was turned black and cracked with the frost-burn.
The old grandmother did not speak words of mockery, nor did she strike him with her cane. She took the bone-needle from her lapel. The ivory shaft did immediately shine with a warm, golden-white ember, and the crimson silk tether did catch fire with a soft, pulsing light that cast red circles upon the white snow.
Shi-Ma bent down and took the edges of Tor-Kahn’s torn wolf-pelt in her crooked fingers. She pressed the bone-needle against the frozen hide and through his black, frozen skin. The needle did slip into his flesh without blood, without pain, and without a tear; it passed through the frozen meat as smoothly as a hot iron spoon glides through melted butter.
With three swift, rhythmic pulls of her wrist, Shi-Ma did stitch the open shoulder-seam. Each stitch did leave a line of glowing crimson fire across the wool and hide. As the red knot was tied, the black rot of the frost-burn did vanish from Tor-Kahn’s flesh; the blood inside his shoulder did unfreeze and run hot like summer water, and a great warmth did spread from the seam through his whole belly, like the steam of a freshly baked barley-cake.
Then did Shi-Ma rise and look into the screaming heart of the blizzard. She did draw the red thread through the air with a wide sweep of her arm, stitching a great spiral knot against the empty wind.
Where the crimson thread did cross the air, the cold-ghost of the blizzard did loose a terrible shriek. The freezing gale was caught in the spiritual web of the ancestral knot; the storm could not pierce the red boundary, and its teeth were broken upon the invisible seam. A circle of calm, warm air, smelling of burnt sweetgrass and sheep’s fleece, did settle upon the mountain ledge.
Shi-Ma took the great, weeping chieftain by his leather collar and dragged him to his feet. She led him down the frozen pass through the circle of quiet air, while the six young hunters did crawl behind them along the path of melted snow, their torn coats held together by the lingering red steam of her passage.
When they reached the lower tents of the clan, Tor-Kahn did sit upon the earth for many nights, unable to speak with loud words. His great jade knife remained in the bottom of the black crevasse, but he did not go back to seek it. He took a sack of dried mountain-sage and sat down in the dirt beside the basket where Shi-Ma kept her threads. He did beg with small, quiet whispers to be taught how to find the wing-bones of the fallen cranes and how to rub the red rust into the grooves. Never again did he boast of the thickness of his wolf-pelts or the strength of his fists, for he had seen that the sharpest blade in the world cannot hold together that which has been torn apart.
The first bone-needle of Shi-Ma was buried with her beneath a cairn of river-slate when her hundredth winter was completed, but the grandmothers of the high nomadic tents did preserve the sacred turning of the stitch. Across all the ages of Saṃsāra, when the hunters ride forth into the white wastes, their parkas are sealed with the bone-needle and the crimson floss, so that the ancestral grandmothers may ride upon their shoulders and mend the tears before the cold-ghosts can drink their blood.
Moral of the Story: The violent man trusts in the brute thickness of his armor and the sharpness of his edge, only to be broken when the seam gives way; but the humble worker who knows the sacred art of binding thread to thread can mend the deepest wounds, turn aside the wrath of the blizzard, and hold together that which pride has shattered.

Blades in the Dark
Item: Ancestral Weaver’s Bone-Needle
Load:
- 0 Load (Can be pinned to a lapel, collar, or sash; occupies 1 hand when drawn).
Mechanics and Usage:
- Tier & Quality: Quality equal to Crew Tier +1 when interacting with textiles, sutures, or woven concealment.
- Weft of the Spirit-Guide (Passive): You have Potency on Study and Survey rolls made to analyze cloth, rope, funerary shrouds, or tailored items (such as identifying hidden pockets, spotting poisoned threads, or reading emotional psychic traces in a dead person’s garments).
- Bloodless Prick (Passive): The needle slides through flesh, leather, and hide without resistance, leaving no visible puncture wound, blood droplet, or sensation of pain.
- Protective Ward-Stitching (Active): Spend an action and mark 1 Stress to embroider a quick warding knot into an adjacent scoundrel’s garment or your own. The recipient gains armor against the next source of physical injury (slashing, piercing, blunt) or severe environmental cold before the end of the current score (standard effect, controlled position).
- Suture of the Restful Ghost (Active): Make an Attune or Tinker roll while spending an action to bind an open wound or rent textile with glowing crimson floss:
- On a living ally, treat this as field triage: clear a Level 1 Harm instantly or reduce a Level 2 Harm penalty for the rest of the scene without requiring a full downtime recovery action.
- On torn cloth, sailcloth, or rope, instantly mend the breach to masterwork standard, bypassing obstacles or securing an escape line.
- Complications: A Devil’s Bargain or a 1–3 result on Attune can leave the red thread tethered to an agitated ancestral ghost, cause the thread to smoke excessively, or attract spirit wardens.
Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition)
Item: Ancestral Weaver’s Bone-Needle Wondrous Item, common (requires attunement)
Properties:
- The needle weighs negligible weight and can be worn pinned to clothing or held in one hand, functioning as an artisan’s tool (weaver’s tools) or a druidic/cleric spellcasting focus.
- Weft of the Spirit-Guide (Passive): While the needle is in your possession, you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Investigation or History) checks made to inspect, analyze, or appraise garments, ropes, tapestries, and shrouds. You intuitively detect weak seams, structural fraying, concealed compartments sewn into linings, and strong emotional imprints left on clothing within 15 feet.
- Bloodless Prick (Passive): The needle can pierce the skin of a willing or incapacitated creature without causing hit point damage, pain, bleeding, or the risk of natural disease or infection.
- Protective Ward-Stitching (Action, 3/Day): You spend an action to rapidly stitch an ancestral warding knot into the clothing or armor of a willing creature within 5 feet using the crimson floss. The target gains 3 temporary hit points. While these temporary hit points persist (up to 1 hour), the target has resistance to non-magical cold damage. When the temporary hit points are depleted or 1 hour passes, the red thread vanishes into faint sweetgrass smoke. The needle regains all expended uses daily at dawn.
- Suture of the Restful Ghost (Action, 2/Day): You touch the needle to an open wound of a living creature or a torn piece of non-magical textile within 5 feet:
- If used on a creature, the target regains 1d4 hit points and stops bleeding naturally. A creature stabilized this way ceases dying immediately without requiring a Wisdom (Medicine) check.
- If used on a damaged garment, rope, or fabric object, you repair a tear or hole up to 2 feet in length as if by the mending cantrip, restoring its original structural integrity. The needle regains all expended uses daily at dusk.

- Protective Ward-Stitching (Active): Up to 3 times per day, the bearer can spend an action to embroider an ancestral rune onto an ally’s armor or clothing. The ward absorbs the first 3 points of physical or cold damage the wearer would take within the next exploration turn (10 minutes). Once absorbed, the thread turns to sweet-smelling ash.

- When used on an injured ally, it restores 1d4 Hit Points or instantly stabilizes a dying character at 0 HP without requiring a Healing Kit roll.
- When used on torn adventuring gear (tents, ropes, cloaks, packs), it repairs the item completely, restoring 1 point of lost Durability to a damaged textile-based item.
