Lore: In the communal settlements and frontier schoolhouses across the island nations of Saṃsāra, children who have not reached adulthood undergo compulsory education before their innate magical abilities manifest. To bridge the gap between young learners, newly possessed avatars adapting to fresh forms, and the deep cultural history of their local lands, village elders and lineage shamans fashioned instructional spirit-slates. These primers were originally inscribed by wandering pedagogical shamans who mediated between the voices of departed scholars and the minds of living students. Rather than relying solely on ink and paper, which decay in damp river delta climes, these implements rely on the enduring resonance of stone and resin to channel ancestral memory. By establishing a communion with the benign, educational spirits of long-deceased tutors, the primer allows a novice pupil or an avatar experiencing the fog of Transient Global Amnesia to grasp local languages, historical records, and fundamental world principles through guided trance-lectures.
Description: This object consists of a rectangular tablet of dense, river-smoothed grey slate measuring eight inches wide by eleven inches high, framed by bands of sanded ash-wood bound at the corners with dried willow cordage. A short stylus carved from the polished rib-bone of a prairie gazelle hangs from the base by a braided sinew tether. The surface of the slate is cool to the touch and finely polished, yet upon closer examination under true sight or careful inspection, microscopic runic characters swirl across the stone in faint ultraviolet patterns. When the bone stylus is dragged across the slate, it produces no chalky powder or permanent grooves; instead, it leaves behind luminous, soft-glowing lines of pale amber light that linger until wiped away by the palm of a hand. Carved along the ash-wood border are small, repeating silhouettes of open palms, eyes, stylized owls, and listening ears, each inlaid with ground river clay.
Detailed Stats:
- Item Name: Shamanism 419 of the Ancestral Slate Primer
- Item Rank: Tier 1 (Common)
- Item Armor Check (AC): 0
- Item Health Points (HP): Avatar Maximum Health Points plus 10 (Resilience 10 multiplied by Tier 1)
- Range: Simple (touch for writing; 10 feet for audible teaching murmurs)
- Resonance Requirement: Simple attunement of one minute; the avatar must hold the slate flat between both hands and trace the traditional symbol of an open eye upon the surface while reciting their desire to learn.
- Extradimensional Interaction: Deactivates and immediately unattunes when placed within personal extradimensional pouches, bags, or faction vaults, wiping any active script or stored educational resonance back to a clean stone slate.
Specific Slot:
- Hand Slot (Left or Right hand when actively held and written upon; counts as an auxiliary held focus tool, or can be slotted into a backpack strap loop when idle).
Passives Magic:
- Pedagogue’s Trance: While holding or openly studying the slate, the avatar’s Mind’s Eye filters distracting sensory clutter, granting a +2 bonus to saving throws and mental checks made against being Dazed, Shaken, or confused by fragmented memories.
- Lexicon Alignment: The slate subtly attunes to the predominant regional dialect and script of the island country or state in which the avatar currently stands. The user gains an intuitive comprehension of written mundane road signs, basic institutional notices, and elementary textbooks within that region.
- Scholar’s Retention: Any factual note, diagram, or anatomical sketch traced onto the slate surface with the bone stylus is simultaneously committed to the user’s permanent memory through the Mind’s Eye, preventing degradation of detail even after the physical stone is wiped clean.
Activable Magics:
- Ancestral Dictation (Action Cost: 1 Action): The user taps the bone stylus three times against the wooden frame. This action summons the benign, whispering spirit of an ancient teacher or clan tutor that remains bound to the slate for 10 minutes. The spirit whispers historical context, cultural etiquette, and background lore regarding an examined monument, beast, or architectural structure within 10 feet. This grants the user advantage on their next skill check made to recall knowledge, decipher an archaic inscription, or identify local flora and fauna.
- Lesson Projection (Action Cost: 1 Action): The user writes a short phrase, mathematical figure, or diagram on the slate in glowing amber script and presents the stone toward an audience within a 15-foot cone. The writing lifts off the stone as a floating, harmless illusion made of glowing amber motes that hovers in place for up to 5 minutes, allowing up to eight nearby observers or students to read and comprehend the lesson simultaneously regardless of ambient lighting conditions.
- Rebuke of Ignorance (Action Cost: 1 Action): The avatar sharply drags the bone stylus across the slate to produce a resonant, screeching spiritual frequency akin to chalk screeching across stone, amplified by the indignant whispers of ancestral tutors. One targeted creature within 20 feet that can hear must succeed on a saving throw against DC 11. On a failure, the creature suffers 1d4 psychic damage plus the wielder’s tier die as its mind is overwhelmed by phantom reprimands and corrective lectures, imposing a penalty of -2 on its next attack roll or action taken before the end of its next turn.

Procurement and Resale Outposts for the Ancestral Slate Primer
Municipal Scriptoria, Academy Bookstalls, and Schoolhouse Exchanges
- Setting and Culture: Located in the administrative or cultural quarters of larger cities, usually positioned directly across the plaza from public compulsory schools or within stone courtyards adjacent to grand public libraries. These family-run scriptoria and scholarly supply storefronts feature high wooden shelves loaded with vellum rolls, parchment sheaves, jars of squid ink, fluid collectors, and rows of instructional slates hanging from neat brass pegs. The air smells strongly of dried paper, bookbinder’s gum, and cedar shavings. These shops cater to guild apprentices, village schoolmasters, young scholars, and newly arrived reincarnated individuals seeking to recover literacy in local dialects.
- Purchase Process and Costs: To acquire an instructional slate here, a buyer approaches a counter attended by a bonded scribe or a guild clerk. Transactions are formalized, carefully noted down in the shopkeeper’s registry logs for periodic inspection by municipal tax assessors, and can be settled through an immediate account transfer with the world bank or paid by hand in clean, minted silver pieces. If the purchaser is a certified member of the local teachers’ guild, a recognized educational fraternity, or an allied scribal faction, an established discount equal to 10% multiplied by the character’s tier level is honored on the retail value. In these institutional establishments, the asking price generally settles between 90 silver to 140 silver, fluctuating based on current local school terms, the availability of quarry slate from nearby state borders, and prevailing market dynamics.
- Resale Process and Payout: When an avatar seeks to sell an intact primer to a scriptorium proprietor, the merchant thoroughly examines the ash-wood joints, inspects the slate surface for chips, and tests the bone stylus to confirm that the ancestral connection remains vibrant. Haggling is standard, reducing the payout by approximately 10% of the perceived value times the tier level of the selling character. Sellers receive roughly 45 silver to 70 silver, which is credited straight into their personal world bank ledger while their personal description, name, and current guild affiliations are recorded in the official quasi-log.
Wayside Frontier Trading Posts and Village Elder Compounds
- Setting and Culture: Found in small peripheral villages, frontier logging settlements, and rural way-stations situated at the outer limits of state patrol roads. These broad, timber-built general stores often share wall space with the local mayor’s judgment room or the village elder’s council chambers. The interior is cluttered with grain bags, iron nails, harness grease, and bundles of dried medicinal roots. Because educational supplies rarely arrive by regular trade wagon in the borderlands, primers found here are either handed down through local family lines or traded away by departing travelers who have completed their initial regional studies.
- Purchase Process and Costs: Purchasing a primer in an outlying post involves informal, face-to-face bargaining with a crusty shopkeeper or village head who knows every family in the valley. In these remote areas, official bank branches do not exist, making world bank account transfers impossible. Payment must be rendered in physical currency—such as minted copper and silver sacks, electrum ingots, or non-metal regional tokens—or through equivalent barter using worked pelts, dried beast sinew, or alchemical reagents. Because educational tools are exceptionally rare away from metropolitan centers, the seller holds a strong advantage; asking prices range between 14 gold to 20 gold (or 28 to 40 electrum), and guild discounts are generally dismissed unless the buyer carries explicit tribal endorsements or local kinship standing.
- Resale Process and Payout: When selling a primer at a frontier post, the proprietor welcomes the acquisition to tutor local farm children or assist newly possessed village defenders who are dealing with transient amnesia. The buyer settles the trade entirely in cash, handing over physical coin pouches filled with copper, silver, or locally carved shell and clay tokens. The payout generally amounts to 6 gold to 10 gold in hard currency, or a comparable value in heavy trade supplies. Crucially, because rural settlements fall outside state and city tax boundaries, the exchange incurs zero municipal transaction fees and leaves no paper trail for central tax collectors.
Clandestine Relic Dens and Illicit Back-Alley Markets
- Setting and Culture: Tucked away in subterranean crypts, neglected sewer vaults beneath skyscraper tenements, or disguised behind unremarkable artisan workshops in crowded metropolitan alleys, these clandestine operations thrive beyond the watchful eyes of palace guards and municipal tax officers. Run by fences, outlaw mages, or smugglers of illicit artifacts, these dens are dim, smoky alcoves lit only by tallow lanterns or luminescent lichen. The slates kept in these locations are predominantly contraband: salvaged from the corpses of fallen avatars on dangerous frontiers, purloined from academy vaults, or carved with unapproved, ancestral shamanic spirits that impart taboo regional lore or suppressed historical truths.
- Purchase Process and Costs: Entering these spaces requires passing private lookouts and speaking specialized passphrases. Transactions are conducted strictly under the rule of buyer beware; no guarantees or refunds are provided if the primer is damaged or carries a lingering spiritual disturbance. Paper logs, receipts, and world bank credits are outright refused to prevent detection by imperial authorities. Buyers must produce physical gold coins, platinum pieces, or raw precious metal bars, with asking rates typically marked up to 18 gold to 26 gold. Guild badges and faction memberships yield no discounts in these shadow markets.
- Resale Process and Payout: A character seeking to liquidate a slate primer through an illicit fence receives total anonymity with no questions asked concerning how the piece was retrieved. If the slate happens to hold rare genealogical histories, forgotten faction lineages, or suppressed ancestral knowledge that the fence can resell to foreign spies or rebellious political blocs, the broker will pay a substantial sum—frequently offering between 11 gold to 18 gold in raw coin, representing nearly double the standard payout offered by legitimate academic merchants. Payment is delivered directly into hand in physical currency, shielding the transaction entirely from the scrutiny of the world bank and royal tax assessors.
Tactical and Pedagogical Application of the Ancestral Slate Primer Across Diverse Environments
Ruined Archives and Sunken Academy Vaults
- Offense: While navigating the collapsed corridors of ancient stone libraries or submerged academies, an avatar holding the primer uses the bone stylus as an offensive conduit against awakened stone constructs, bound spectral sentinels, or rogue predatory beasts lurking among the crumbling stacks. The character rapidly scores the stylus across the stone face in erratic, jagged cross-hatches, activating the Rebuke of Ignorance. The slate emits a piercing, acoustic-psychic shriek that echoes off the damp stone masonry, sounding like an enraged instructor snapping a cane against a desk combined with the overlapping reprimands of forgotten scholars. This sensory intrusion tears through the mind of the attacking creature, dealing psychic damage bolstered by the user’s tier die, shattering its combat focus, and imposing an immediate penalty on its subsequent strike as phantom voices violently correct its flawed physical form.
- Defense: When traversing unstable archival chambers filled with decomposing scroll racks, rotting floorboards, or hidden pressure plates, the avatar initiates Ancestral Dictation by tapping the bone stylus rhythmically against the ash-wood frame. The faint, translucent silhouette of an ancient archivist or scribe manifests beside the user, murmuring low warnings directly into their ear. The spirit points out the load-bearing stress lines in the vaulted ceiling, translates eroded warning runes etched into stone flags, and guides the party safely around pit traps or crumbling masonry, granting the avatar advantage on perception and insight checks to avoid triggering environmental collapses or ancient defensive mechanisms.
Bustling Metropolitan Academies and Royal Courtyards
- Offense: In the paved courtyards outside grand city guildhalls, high academies, or royal palace pavilions where brandishing bladed steel triggers immediate arrest by the country garrison, the primer serves as a subtle weapon of psychological disruption. When confronted by arrogant rival scholars, manipulative royal sycophants, or undercover agents attempting to bully the party through social dominance, the avatar uses the bone stylus to trace the target’s public title or known family crest onto the slate before delivering a sharp tap to the ash-wood edge. The Rebuke of Ignorance discharges as an invisible, focused psychic shockwave that strikes only the target’s ear, overwhelming their thoughts with the harsh, patronizing scolding of their childhood tutors. The target blushes crimson, stammers, and loses their composure, their defensive rhetoric completely dismantled by the sudden mental vertigo and social embarrassment without any physical blow being landed.
- Defense: When conducting clandestine operations or complex group planning in crowded public squares where foreign diplomats, palace spies, or nosy city judges congregate, the avatar employs the Lesson Projection feature. The character rapidly writes out tactical fallback coordinates, extraction routes, or code words across the slate’s surface. With a flick of the hand, the glowing amber letters lift silently off the stone, hovering as an illusionary script visible only within a narrow, fifteen-foot cone directed straight at trusted companions. This luminous broadcast ensures the party can silently coordinate their tactical movements, review city gate passphrases, and study building layouts without speaking a single audible word or passing paper notes that could be intercepted by wandering informers.
Deep Caverns and Subterranean Fungal Forests
- Offense: Within the lightless passages of subterranean cave systems, dark mine shafts, or glowing fungal caverns, predatory cave beasts and subterranean monstrosities rely heavily on heightened hearing, tremors, or predatory intuition to ambush travelers. When a subterranean predator emerges from the ceiling or a side fissure, the avatar holds the slate aloft and drags the stylus downward with extreme pressure. The resulting harmonic screech pierces the cavern gloom, bouncing off mineral outcroppings and stalactites to deliver a sharp mental jolt to the beast’s nervous system. The unexpected auditory and psychic shock disorients the attacker’s sensory apparatus, ruining its pounce, leaving it flat-footed against counterattacks, and causing it to retreat toward the shadowed edges of the cavern.
- Defense: Subterranean environments pose severe psychological hazards to newly possessed avatars, including claustrophobia, disorientation, and confusion caused by overlapping past-life memories flooding the mind in total darkness. By clasping both hands firmly around the ash-wood borders of the primer, the user leans into the Pedagogue’s Trance passive. The cool touch of the river slate acts as a mental stabilizer, filtering out echoes of ancient subterranean dread and suppressing the Dazed or Fragmented conditions. Simultaneously, the avatar uses the stylus to trace maps of the winding cavern paths directly onto the stone; through Scholar’s Retention, every fork, chokepoint, and underground water pool is permanently etched into the avatar’s Mind’s Eye, preventing the group from ever losing their bearings in the trackless deep.
Open Steppe Encampments and Frontier Borderlands
- Offense: On wide, windswept grass plains or frontier caravan trails where feral beast packs, rogue raiders, or wandering monsters approach from long distances, conventional close-quarters weapons provide little deterrence during an initial rush. The avatar mounts a defensive wagon or low ridge, waiting until the lead beast or scout enters within twenty feet, then sharply scores the primer to release the Rebuke of Ignorance. The psychic screech cuts straight through howling winds and animal howls, striking the lead beast with the sensation of being struck by an iron-hard disciplinary rod. The mental pain causes the beast to stumble in full sprint, breaking the momentum of the charging pack, creating confusion in their ranks, and leaving them hesitant to advance against the party’s defensive perimeter.
- Defense: When establishing a night camp on the wild borderlands where wild predators and territorial spirits prowl the dark perimeter, the avatar sits by the campfire and calls forth an ancestral guide using Ancestral Dictation. The ancient shamanic spirit hovers near the boundary of the firelight, softly whispering the habits, scent cues, and hunting patterns of the local predators inhabiting the plain. Furthermore, the avatar traces educational warding symbols and boundary lines on the slate, projecting glowing amber lesson runes into the tall grass via Lesson Projection. The floating glyphs act as psychological warning markers, unnerving wild beasts that fear unexplained light and signaling to border scouts that an educated, vigilant guardian holds the camp.

Perception of Activation:
Sight
- User’s Perspective: When the bone stylus touches the ash-wood edge to initiate an activation, the surrounding lighting appears to soften into a gentle, honeyed twilight. Faint amber runes and geometric diagrams ignite along the surface of the slate, rising off the face of the stone like glowing dust particles that hover in geometric patterns. Through the user’s vision, intricate lines of pale ultraviolet light branch outward from the carved instructional silhouettes on the ash-wood frame, illuminating unseen spiritual conduits and highlighting the core structural points of nearby books, tablets, or architectural features.
- Observer’s Perspective: Onlookers notice the dark grey slate suddenly catch a vibrant, interior amber luminosity that outlines the carved runes in crisp, warm fire without generating real flame or heat. The bone stylus held by the user glows with a gentle luminescence, leaving trails of softly suspended golden motes in the air as it moves, while the user’s eyes briefly take on an amber sheen across the irises.
- Positives: The warm illumination provides clear, glare-free light across a 15-foot area, permitting the user and nearby allies to read eroded scripts, study dense technical diagrams, or inspect anatomical structures even in pitch-black conditions.
- Negatives: The glowing amber motes and vibrant script make covert study or hidden signaling impossible in dim environments, drawing immediate visual attention from nearby observers, hostile scouts, or sentry beasts.
Sound
- User’s Perspective: The sharp tap or drag of the bone stylus against the slate reverberates in the user’s inner ear as a clear, percussive chime, immediately followed by the quiet, layered murmuring of a scholarly assembly. Scores of ancient tutors, tribal lorekeepers, and deceased grammarians whisper foundational vocabulary, mathematical rules, and historical dates in a calm, rhythmic drone that neatly arranges itself into structured thoughts.
- Observer’s Perspective: Bystanders hear a dry, high-pitched scratching sound that rings louder than natural stone carving, resembling a dense slate pencil scraping firmly across a chalk-board. This sound is accompanied by a very faint, airy rustle reminiscent of hundreds of dry parchment scrolls unrolling simultaneously in a quiet chamber.
- Positives: The rhythmic, instructional murmurs drown out ambient noise, shouting, and auditory combat distractions, steadying the avatar’s focus and preventing panic during chaotic encounters.
- Negatives: The piercing screech of the bone stylus against the river slate carries cleanly down quiet corridors, echo-prone ruins, or silent schoolhouse hallways, instantly signaling the user’s presence.
Smell
- User’s Perspective: A sudden, distinct wave of dried ash-wood shavings, beeswax polish, old parchment, and ground river clay fills the user’s nostrils. Underneath these scholarly scents lies the crisp, herbal aroma of dried willow bark and crushed pine needles, creating an atmosphere identical to an ancient forest library during late autumn.
- Observer’s Perspective: Persons standing within a ten-foot radius catch a brief, dry whiff of chalk dust, clean cedar shavings, and dried mountain tea, as though an old instructor’s satchel had just been snapped open right beside them.
- Positives: The dry, clean fragrance clears the user’s olfactory senses of stagnant cavern rot, sulfurous fumes, or swamp vapors, preventing nausea and aiding sustained concentration.
- Negatives: The artificial scent of dried cedar and old parchment stands out starkly against barren rock, damp trenches, or open wild steppe, alerting keen-scented predators that track unnatural foreign odors.
Taste
- User’s Perspective: A dry, mildly chalky sensation coats the roof of the user’s mouth, reminiscent of clean mineral limestone dust combined with the faintly bitter, astringent undertone of willow tea and dried ink gall.
- Observer’s Perspective: While observers taste nothing in the air, they may observe the avatar reflexively clearing their throat or licking dry lips as the mineral resonance grounds through their facial bones.
- Positives: The astringent, chalky bitterness stimulates salivary flow and mental alertness, clearing morning sluggishness or mental fatigue during long research sessions.
- Negatives: The persistent mineral dryness leaves the user’s mouth feeling arid, creating an immediate need for fresh water from a waterskin to avoid hoarseness after prolonged verbal recitation.
Touch
- User’s Perspective: The river-slate tablet transforms from room temperature to a soothing, steady warmth that feels like a sun-baked river pebble. A gentle, humming vibration pulses through the bone stylus and travels up the bones of the user’s hand and forearm, settling the nerves in the wrist and creating a steady, fluid precision in the fingers.
- Observer’s Perspective: Witnesses see the user’s hand and fingers relax into an effortless, steady posture, with no trace of tremor or strain, while loose dust on the writing surface dances briefly in small circular formations before settling flush along the frame.
- Positives: The soothing warmth prevents hand cramping during rapid writing, loosens stiff joints caused by damp weather, and steadies fine motor control for delicate instructional drafting.
- Negatives: The mild vibrational hum numbs the user’s fingertips slightly to external tactile feedback, making it harder to handle very slick or fine objects immediately after setting down the stylus.
Extra-Sensory Perceptions
- User’s Perspective (Cognitive Indexing): Through the Mind’s Eye, the avatar experiences an immediate, mental shelving effect where disparate thoughts, fleeting instincts, and newly perceived details snap into clean, alphabetical and thematic categories, making relevant facts instantly retrievable without effort.
- User’s Perspective (Pedagogical Anima Sense): The user senses the intellectual receptivity and educational maturity of all living minds within thirty feet, feeling whether nearby avatars, children, or beasts possess receptive, curious thoughts or dull, stubborn resistance to new ideas.
- Observer’s Perspective (Intellectual Pressure): Sentient creatures in the immediate vicinity feel a subtle prickling behind their foreheads, accompanied by an involuntary flash of early childhood memories, past schoolhouse reprimands, or an urge to sit upright and listen attentively.
- Observer’s Perspective (Conceptual Clarity): Allies standing within the radius experience a momentary lift in mental fog, feeling as though complex ideas, tactical plans, or strange foreign speech spoken by the user suddenly make intuitive sense.
- Positives: The extra-sensory organization prevents cognitive fatigue, eliminates the confusion caused by overlapping past-life memories, and allows the wielder to accurately gauge how best to phrase commands, instructions, or warnings to companions.
- Negatives: In environments packed with complex historical puzzles, multiple conflicting inscriptions, or dozens of arguing minds, the incoming stream of structured data can cause a dull, throbbing ache behind the avatar’s temples if sustained without pause.
Recipe: Shaping of the Ancestral Slate Primer
Materials Needed
- One slab of fine-grain grey river slate (cut and ground to eight inches by eleven inches, free from hairline fractures or iron seams)
- Two pieces of dry-cured ash-wood for the side rails (each eleven inches long, one inch wide, and half an inch thick)
- Two pieces of dry-cured ash-wood for the cross rails (each eight inches long, one inch wide, and half an inch thick)
- One slender rib-bone harvested from a prairie gazelle or fleet beast (polished, four to five inches in length, sound and uncracked)
- Three feet of dried willow bark cordage (harvested from riverbanks and twisted into thin, flexible binding twine)
- One twelve-inch strand of cured predator sinew (cleaned, stretched, and dried for use as the stylus tether)
- Two fluid ounces of refined willow sap binder (extracted using a fluid collector from weeping willows or iron-bark trees)
- One ounce of fine-ground river clay powder (dried and sifted, used for the inlay of frame carvings)
- One Tier 1 Magic Crystal (size and weight of a coin, functioning as the vital arcane catalyst to bridge ancestral memory with the material plane)
- A half-ounce block of natural beeswax (used for sealing the wood frame and waterproofing the joint cordage)
Tools Required
- Woodworker’s pull-knife and fine detailing chisels
- Slate-cutting bow saw and wet river-grit rubbing stones
- Fluid collector (standard syringe with needle for harvesting, measuring, and applying sap adhesives)
- Fine-tipped bone-carving burin or hardened iron scribe
- Hand-drill with small bone-boring bit (one-sixteenth inch diameter)
- Stone mortar and pestle for pulverizing dried river clay into dust
- Soft linen buffing cloth and small horsehair application brush
Skill Requirements
- Stonecutting / Masonry (Trained Level 1 minimum)
- Carpentry / Woodcarving (Trained Level 2 minimum)
- Alchemical or Magical Crafting (Trained Level 2 minimum)
- Shamanic Lore / Ancestral Rites (Trained Level 1 minimum)
Crafting Steps
- Quarrying and Slate Dressing: Saw and rough-shape the river slate to uniform dimensions of eight inches by eleven inches. Submerge the stone in fresh water and grind both faces flat against wet river-grit stones until the surface is completely smooth to the touch, free of burrs, and exhibits a uniform matte grey finish.
- Fashioning the Ash Frame: Plane the four ash-wood rail sections until straight and square. Cut matching mortise and tenon joints into the ends of each piece so that the four rails fit together to form an interlocking border with a recessed inner groove designed to snugly seat the slate tablet.
- Inscribing Pedagogical Icons: With the fine wood chisels, carve the traditional educational motifs along the face of all four wood rails. Score recurring silhouettes of open palms, listening ears, stylized owls, and watching eyes along the borders, maintaining consistent spacing and depth.
- Clay Inlay and Sealing: Pulverize dry river clay in the mortar until it reaches a flour-like consistency, then blend it with one fluid ounce of tree sap extracted via fluid collector to create a dense, workable paste. Pack this paste into the scored wood carvings, scrape away the excess, and allow it to dry flush with the wood grain before rubbing the frame with beeswax to seal against dampness.
- Shaping the Bone Stylus: Scrape the gazelle rib-bone with the burin to achieve a tapered, blunt stylus point that will slide cleanly across slate without carving permanent physical grooves. Drill a small hole through the broad base of the bone, thread the cured sinew tether through the opening, and knot it securely.
- Frame Assembly and Binding: Seat the smoothed slate tablet inside the recessed channel of the ash-wood frame, joining the corners using the remaining willow sap adhesive. Drill a small diagonal hole through the bottom corner of the frame to anchor the opposite end of the stylus sinew tether. Wrap each corner joint tightly with multiple passes of soaked willow cordage, tying off with square knots that contract and lock the wood tightly as they dry.
- Catalyst Seating and Arcane Infusion: Carve a discrete hollow into the center of the top ash-wood rail directly behind the frame. Seat the Tier 1 Magic Crystal inside this pocket, sealing it beneath a fitted wood plug and melted beeswax. With both hands placed flat upon the slate, channel arcane focus through the crystal catalyst while quietly reciting the vowels and basic instructional consonants of the local dialect, attuning the stone until runic characters swirl in faint ultraviolet luminescence beneath the surface under true sight.
- Final Testing: Drag the bone stylus across the stone face to confirm that glowing amber script appears cleanly upon the slate and lifts effortlessly when the hand is passed across the surface.
Grey Stone That Spoke with Mouth of Bone Stick
In the first turnings of the land when the tall yellow light Helios was young upon the world Saṃsāra, there were many little villages where the small people did walk like sheep without bells. In that place which was named the country of Aterian, the children were very loud and did make bad marks upon the ground with mud. When the great night did fall, they could not read the signs upon the tree trunks, nor could they say the names of the ancient grandfathers who did sleep under the heavy earth. The children did run after wild goats and did throw round stones into the river, and when the grey monsters of the marsh did come forth with long claws, the people could not make a straight wall because no man did know what was five paces or what was ten paces.
In those days there lived an elder woman who had the name Vanya. She was a woman who had come down from the high cloud-fall in a former turning, and her head was full of the grey smoke of memories which she could not wholly grasp with her fingers. She did remember a great room in a different world where many little people sat upon wooden benches while an elder did hit a dark board with a stick to make them wise. But in this wet river land there were no boards and there were no books, because the green water and the weeping trees did rot all sheepskin and did turn all dried grass into stinking grease.
Then Vanya did go down to the place where the river was sharp and did cut into the cold slate rocks. She took a heavy hammer of river-flint and did strike the rock until a flat square did break away from the mother-stone. The stone was smooth like the inside of a duck egg and did feel cold like dead fish. She took the wood of the ash-tree, which does not bend when the rain is heavy, and did make four bars to hold the stone tight so the edges would not bite the hands of the small ones. With a fine bone picked from the ribs of a little swift-deer, she did make an ear, an eye, an owl-bird, and an open hand upon the wood, because the small ones must look, must listen, and must hold the peace before their minds can receive the light.
When she sat down in the grass under the great noon of Helios, she took the bone stick and did drag it across the stone to write the signs of counting. But the bone made no marks upon the hard rock, and the small ones did laugh at her with wide mouths, saying that an old grandmother was trying to scratch water with a feather. Then Vanya did shut her two eyes and did call upon the spirits of the old scholars who had died in the great salt wars before nine thousand turnings. She spoke words that had no shape in the common throat, and she did press into the wood frame a small shining seed of stone that had been taken from the chest of an earth-beast.
The seed did drink her breath, and all at once the grey stone did wake up with a sound like dry grass moving in a wind. When she dragged the bone stick a second time, the rock did not break, but a line of pale amber honey-light did follow the point, glowing like the eye of an owl in a dark cave. From the four corners of the wood frame there came a low humming of many voices, like a hundred old grandfathers sitting inside a wooden box and whispering all the names of the herbs, the names of the stars, and the proper ways to build a ditch so the water does not drown the barley.
Vanya called the small ones to sit upon the dirt before her knees. “Listen to the rock,” she said to them, “for the earth does remember what your soft heads have forgotten. If you do not learn the weight of the grain and the signs of the north star, the river will eat your canoes and the kings of the other islands will make you pay three silvers for a cup of sour beer.”
The little people were afraid of the voices in the stone, but when Vanya wrote a sign upon the rock, the sign did lift up into the air like a little yellow fly and did hang above their heads so they could see the shape of the word while the stone whispered its meaning into their ears. The children did stop chasing the wild goats and did sit until their legs were numb, learning the signs for fire, for bread, for danger, and for the names of the seven gods of the high sky. Soon the children of that river-bank did know how to build stone stores, how to cure the fish with salt, and how to speak with the border soldiers so that no taxes were stolen from their fathers’ carts.
Now, in the nearby hills there lived a wild hunter whose name was Brak-Tor. Brak-Tor had shoulders like a water-bull and his chest was covered in red hair, but his forehead was very low and he did hate all things that did not make a noise like a dying deer. He did say to his clan that the old woman with the glowing stone was a thief who was putting bad water into the heads of the boys, making them soft like melon-flesh so they would not pull the heavy hunting bows.
“Why should a man know the marks of an old stone?” roared Brak-Tor in the middle of the camp, spitting upon the dry dung fire. “A man must only know how to stick an iron barb into a boar and how to tear the hide from the meat. The words on the slate are cowards’ play, and the grandfathers in the rock are only ghosts who want to steal our meat-broth.”
Brak-Tor took his heavy stone mace and walked into the school-place where Vanya was showing the children the signs of the seasons and the cycle of the gas-giant VaporSphere. He pushed the small children into the mud with his great boots and did reach out his dirty hand to seize the ash-wood frame, meaning to smash it against the river boulders until the spirit seed was crushed into sand.
Vanya did not run and she did not drop the bone stylus. As the wild hunter raised his mace to strike her head, she did turn the flat face of the stone directly before his hairy eyes and did drag the bone stick downward across the slate with all the weight of her old wrists.
The sound that leaped from the stone was not the soft murmur of an old teacher. It was a terrible, screeching howl that sounded like ten thousand slate shingles scraping against iron kettles, carrying within it the wrathful shouting of all the dead masters, sages, and grandfathers of the ancient world. The sound did hit Brak-Tor between his two eyes like an invisible stone. He dropped his mace and did clap his two hands over his ears, but the noise was inside his marrow and could not be shut away with thick fingers.
The voices of the dead tutors did shout into his brain every rule of grammar he had broken, every number he had counted falsely, every contract he had cheated, and every foolish thing he had spoken since the day he was born from his mother’s flank. The weight of his own ignorance did fall upon his mind like a mountain of dry gravel. Brak-Tor fell upon his knees and did beat his head against the grass, crying like a little dog that has been beaten with a green ash rod, begging the slate to cease its scolding and promised that he would never more mock the work of the letters.
Vanya lifted the bone stick from the stone, and the terrible shouting stopped. Brak-Tor crawled away through the mud upon all fours, his red hair full of burrs, and he would never again look upon a piece of grey stone without trembling in his joints. On that very night he did take a small piece of wood and did sit outside the school-shed, trying with his thick, bloody fingers to copy the amber signs that hovered in the air so that his head would not be so empty and cold.
For three hundred turns of the great year the original slate stayed in the schoolhouse of Aterian, until the great mages did come to build the tall towers that touch the lower winds. The apprentices of the mages did make many brothers and sisters of the stone, cutting the ash-wood and smoothing the river-slate, so that in every village where the young souls wake up after the long death, there should be a voice to teach them the speech of the living before the monsters of the world do find them untaught.
Moral of the Story: The muscle of the arm can break a spear, but the mind that refuses to learn remains a naked child in a world of wolves, and he who despises the teaching of the ancestors will be broken by the screech of his own ignorance.

Call of Cthulhu (7th Edition)
Item: Slate of the Whispering Tutors
Description: A flat tablet of dull grey river slate framed in weathered ash-wood, fitted with an attached stylus carved from animal bone. When drawn across the stone, the stylus causes faint, glowing amber script to appear, accompanied by the quiet murmur of scholarly voices speaking in archaic dialects.
Sanity Loss:
- 0/1 Sanity points upon activating the slate or experiencing direct communion with the ancestral voices.
Arcane Mechanics and Properties:
- Pedagogue’s Trance (Passive): While openly examining or studying the tablet, the investigator gains a bonus die on Language (Own), Language (Other), History, and Library Use rolls when attempting to translate ancient inscriptions, decipher forgotten scripts, or cross-reference academic texts.
- Ancestral Dictation (Active): By tapping the bone stylus three times against the wooden frame and expending 3 Magic Points, the user summons a faint, pedagogical spirit. The spirit whispers historical context, cultural customs, or forgotten lore regarding an examined artifact, architectural ruin, or creature for 10 minutes, granting an immediate +20% bonus to the next relevant Education, Archaeology, or Occult roll.
- Rebuke of Ignorance (Active, Cost: 4 Magic Points, 1d2 Sanity points): The user forcefully drags the bone stylus downward across the stone. The caster selects one target within 10 yards who can hear the sound and initiates an opposed roll pitting the user’s POW against the target’s POW. If the caster succeeds, the target’s mind is wracked by a cacophony of overlapping ancestral reprimands and scholarly scolding, suffering 1d4 points of temporary mental damage (which manifests as disorientation) and a penalty die on all actions taken for 1d4 rounds.
- Suggested Skill Interaction: History, Archaeology, Library Use, Language, Occult.
Blades in the Dark
Item: Ancestral Primer Slate
Load:
- 1 Load (Carried in hand or slotted into a satchel strap, counts toward loadout as an unusual scholarly implement).
Mechanics and Usage:
- Tier & Quality: Quality equal to the Crew Tier +1 for purposes of deciphering ancient texts, translating forgotten dialects, or conducting academic research across historical archives.
- Passive – Pedagogue’s Trance: When you make a Study or Consort roll to analyze archaic architectural layouts, translate old blueprints, or grasp suppressed city history, you gain +1d to your action roll.
- Active – Ancestral Lecture: You may spend 1 Stress to consult the bound echoes of past scholars, asking the GM one question about the history, purpose, or hidden danger of an academic location or relic, receiving an answer with Great effect.
- Active – Rebuke of Ignorance (Cost: 2 Stress): You violently scrape the bone stylus across the slate, producing a piercing psychic screech that echoes through the ghost field. You make an Attune roll to target a nearby foe within close range. On a success, the target is overwhelmed by phantom scoldings, suffering reduced effect on their next action and leaving them vulnerable, which improves your team’s position from Desperate to Risky, or Risky to Controlled.
- Complications: If an Attune roll made with the slate results in a 1-3, or if a Devil’s Bargain is accepted, the ancient whispers bleed into the present environment, drawing the attention of nearby spirits, the Spirit Wardens, or leaving the user temporarily distracted by chaotic historical trivia.
